Interesting challenge: explaining the plot of Rurouni Kenshin: the Legend Ends without going into massive infodump mode for the Bakumatsu and the Meiji Restoration Era.

I realized about a sentence in that I can’t just infodump like I do for my mom and sister because the question was “What movie are you watching?” and “What’s it about?” but she is also not the friend who already studies this period in history so I can’t just drop the terms and expect her to know what they mean.

#how much context is too much?#who knows #and of course there's also how much context you need between adaptations #though i kept that one to a minimum #because she doesn't really need to know how they changed elements of the final battle #or how i appreciate sanosuke actually being able to do something in that battle instead of being treated as a joke #and 'what's it about' probably doesn't mean 'include the trivia about the battle lasting 15 minutes #which is the same as shishio's limit in-universe'#which i would include with the friend with the history interest because she also gets really into production trivia like that #and it probably doesn't mean include the trivia about the location being changed from mt. hiei in the show to aboard the rengoku/purgatory #or the staged execution that is probably a parallel to how the real-life person who inspired kenshin as a character was killed #or how soujiro's actor was told he would have to convey soujiro's backstory through his behavior #since the film didn't have time for extensive flashbacks #but i did still tell her i think the final battle is one of the greatest sword fights or final battles in almost any show/movie i've seen #rin rambles #rin rambles in the tags #rurouni kenshin the legend ends #ruroken #rurouni kenshin the legend ends spoilers
