i was always under the impression the black psyche locks weren't anything that special, just indication that he REALLY wanted to hide it and we couldn't bust it open. if i recall correctly (and it's been a while so i apologize if i'm off), they appear in regards to his motive for killing zak, right? but we know why he killed zak. they never really bothered me and i never really considered them unaddressed but i am wondering if i just missed something. take care!

i think you're underestimating their importance. keep in mind, ace attorney is a murder mystery series. there would be no narrative reason to introduce the black psych locks if that wasn't something we were supposed to learn more about at a later point in time.

as for 'we know why he killed zak' the writing goes explicitly out of the way to tell us that, actually, we don't. although it clearly has something to do with the trial 7 years ago, the exact motivation behind why he did what he did in the following years is never clear to us. It's not a plot hole - i still completely buy the events of aa4 even without knowing his motives - but it's a super important bit of characterization that's missing.

think of the scenes with phoenix and kristoph in the detention center. phoenix repeatedly emphasizes wanting to know kristoph's motivation. given that he is both the person with the most knowledge of this situation, and the POV character for this specific scene, we're given no reason to doubt phoenix when he claims there is more to this situation than we've been given.

there's not really precedent in ace attorney for an unreliable narrator, and in general, a lot of mystery fiction doesnt do this, because if you can't trust the information and logic being provided to you from the POV character then you have literally no sensible frame of reference for untangling the rest of the story.

it's a bit vague as to what Phoenix actually knows at this point in time, because of the whole way the mason system works, but we can assume that phoenix is aware that kristoph commissioned the forgery 7 years ago, and he is still not satisfied with that as the motive for the murder. the whole thing about the psyche locks being 'full of despair' and phoenix not even being sure he could unlock them really hammers in that we're dealing with something mechanically different from earlier games. like they just simply wouldn't be here framed like this if we weren't supposed to learn more

why did being taken off this case affect kristoph so badly, when there were seemingly zero material consequences for him? why was it significant enough to him that he seemingly had everyone involved tailed? why was the grudge he held against zak potent enough that seven years later he was willing to abandon all sense and rationality and kill him in a violent outburst that he wasn't capable of fully covering up? takumi and nuri had said that they had backstories in mind for the gavin brothers beyond what made it into the game so i think its beyond clear that there was more here that we just didn't get and are never going to get

jerma isn't really my bag but i think it's because i view him as more of a phenomenon than a human being, if that makes sense
