my encanto analysis/headcanon that no one asked for
so, i was just looking through some encanto fanart and headcanons and came across this piece (artist: https://mobile.twitter.com/ye_enc):
Tumblr media
abuela had triplets - julieta, pepa, and bruno. both julieta and pepa had three kids - isabella, luisa, and mirabel for julieta, and dolores, camilo, and antonio for pepa.
what i noticed is that for each batch of three, each individual falls under a certain category, and it seems to follow by age.
julieta was, as this lovely fanart shows, likely depended on quite frequently for her ability to heal via her cooking. her gift would have been the most useful and therefore she likely would have been praised the most as “the perfect one”.
this, of course, next falls to isabella, who we see this with the most frequently. abuela very clearly is living the life she wished she could have lived through isabella, and is viewed as the perfect golden child by everyone around her.
dolores is a little different, but i believe she still fits the trope. she is basically the physical embodiment of “seen but not heard.” she keeps quiet on the things she knows would upset her family and doesn’t make herself heard, even when she is in pain, whether physical or emotional. she doesn’t tell anyone that she knows bruno has been living in the walls for the ten years he’s been missing; she doesn’t tell anyone about her feelings for mariano, because she knows that will upset abuela and her cousin’s “perfect for the encanto” arrangement; and one can only imagine how loud certain things are to her, that are endurable for us (fireworks, for example).
next are the middle children: pepa, luisa, and camilo. all of them have some kind of pressure on their shoulders. (and - just a fun thing i noticed - while luisa’s literal pressure is the many things she carries, pepa’s pressure is atmospheric pressure, because she controls the weather. but anyway, lol).
all three of these characters are told in one way or another to bottle up their emotions and keep them buried inside. with pepa, we see this very directly as she is constantly told by the other characters (especially abuela) to, as the fanart above shows, calm down and essentially turn off her emotions because of the damage she can cause with her weather powers. this kind of reminds me of the “conceal, don’t feel” thing that elsa had with her gloves. both pepa and elsa demonstrate the same growth throughout their movies, too - learning to accept themselves and their abilities and thus being able to control them instead of being controlled by them - but, i digress.
luisa, by contrast, is indirectly told to keep her emotions at bay. she is treated as something of a useful tool, both by the town and by abuela, and seen in a very masculine light despite her relatively feminine personality. because of this treatment and the expectation that she will always be strong that comes with it, she falls into the same category as pepa.
camilo, like dolores, is a little different, but still fits. we don’t see much of him in the movie, but i imagine he is depended on as being the funny one. if anyone reading this is into k-pop or bts, think of camilo as like the j-hope or the jin of the group. he’s always expected to be funny and smiling, lifting everyone else’s spirits - but who lifts his spirits?
and lastly, we have the youngest siblings - bruno, mirabel, and antonio. they fit into the roll, of course, of the scapegoat, of family disappointments.
bruno was rejected by the town and by his family, seen as a harbinger of chaos and horror, a bad omen - all because he can see the future, something that he obviously cannot control. but, of course, it’s easier to simply blame someone else than accept the truth or take responsibility for your own actions.
mirabel, of course, is treated in much the same way. she is seen as a bad omen, as well, and is quite literally feared to be the one who will destroy the family and the encanto, because of bruno’s vision.
antonio does not quite fit into this category, but i think if he had not gotten a gift, he would have been shunned in much the same way as bruno or mirabel. it can also be argued that his gift isn’t really very useful, and we can see abuela struggle for a moment to think of how they could put his gift to use at the breakfast at the beginning of the movie (”i told them to warm up your seat”).
anyway - this is all to say that each of the siblings in each of the batches of three appears to fill (or almost fill) the same rolls. i’m sure someone else has already noticed this and i’m just late to the party - but i thought it was cool.

Tumblr media
What I find to be the loudest about Eddie’s arc here is that the whole ep is meant to show us everything that can go wrong when people try to live up to others’ expectations, and how much better it is when people are looking in and figuring out what’s right for them, which means they’re performing for and as themselves. That’s the context for Eddie’s date and story. He needs to figure out how to want a romantic relationship again without feeling like it’s a task he’s performing just to please others. That’s the place he gets to at the end of the ep, which is a good place for him to be. ~~
Tumblr media
And this is essential to Eddie. Based on how little people talk about it, maybe many in fandom aren’t aware of how 911 implied back in 217 that he only married Shannon because she got pregnant. Eddie said explicitly he didn’t think he was ready to get married at the time, and he brought this up in the context of Shannon and him having Christopher. So I think it’s very meaningful that here, when his aunt wants to set him up, he jumps straight to the (wrong) conclusion that he’s expected to marry Vanessa. He was under this pressure to perform for others before, he knows how disastrous it can turn out, and you know what? Trauma totally triggers this kind of reaction. It tells us where he’s at emotionally, that there are still things he has to deal with. ~~
Tumblr media
Speaking of trauma, another symptom of it can be denial, and we do see a bit of it from Eddie during this ep. Remember how he claimed he doesn’t panic back in 501? Right to a doctor’s face while she’s diagnosing him with panic attacks? He did it again in this ep. The thing is that healing isn’t linear. He was advancing with some things, but in 614, faced with his aunt’s ambush, he feels cornered back into a place he’s been in before, a place that left its scars on him, and Eddie regresses. Which is okay! But that’s one step back in order to take two steps forward. Before the ep ends, he will figure out that it’s better not closing himself off completely to the idea of getting into another relationship, even if Tia Pepa’s surprise blind dates are not the way to go about it. ~~
Tumblr media
As a side note, I loved Bobby basically trying to trick his subordinates into giving him a review, and poor Buck stepping right into that one. I saw it coming and I almost choked laughing. This show is damn brilliant with comedy, too. We don’t give it enough credit for that! But it's also a moment when I was really proud of Buck. If Eddie's panic caused him to take a step back, we got to see his husband, who grew up so unloved that he needs every bit of approval he can get, being mature and able to point it out when Bobby was over-praising him in his evaluation. And you know what's more? Bobby knew it would go like this. He has seen Buck's growth and he knew his surrogate son would do the right thing and correct this. Bobby's set up wouldn't have worked otherwise. Excuse me while I get emotional over this. ~~
Tumblr media
Fitting for an ep where 911 flexed its comical muscles, it was embarrassing how hard I laughed at Buck’s reaction to Eddie’s romantic woes. Remember when Buck heavily implied how hurtful it was to be ghosted by Abby, saying in 502 that he had been in Ana’s position, of being unwanted and led on instead of getting a clean break up? Well, look at how quick Buck was to suggest ghosting as a viable option for Eddie this time! It’s almost like Buck doesn’t even notice that he will offer whatever it takes to keep his husband away from these potential Love Interests, even if it contradicts stuff he has said in the past himself. The way Buck could be so calm making this suggestion, and take the “threat” in stride, because duh, he knows his husband wouldn’t want these LIs intruding on their marriage and family either, and it’s absolutely legit to just ghost this girl if she doesn’t get the memo, was hilarious. And honestly, who can blame Buck? He’s defending his hot man. ;p ~~
Which brings me to my weekly gif set, that I dedicated this time to Buck pointing out on Eddie’s failure to let Ana down easy. I mean, it already IS canon that these two talk about everything, it IS canon that Buck is someone who gets to hear all about Eddie’s romantic woes. But this proves that Eddie doesn’t just fill him in using broad strokes, stuff like just letting Buck know that he indeed broke up with Ana. No, they get down to the finer resolution as well, and Buck gets to hear every detail about how Eddie did it with the delicacy of a bull in a china shop. And clearly, Buck wasn’t about respecting either Ana or Eddie’s pain during that break up, at least not enough to stop Buck from teasing his husband about it. XD It’s so funny how naturally Buck’s staking his claim on his husband even while they’re discussing going on dates. I see you, Buck, and am totally with you! ~~
Tumblr media
One last “made me laugh” point. I’m tempted to snicker about Pepa telling Eddie he should be shopping for antiques. I’m queer, so please excuse my dumb queer humor, but ummm. That’s not a very straight suggestion for your nephew, Tia. Or maybe that’s deliberate, maybe it’s implied she is trying to set up Eddie with anyone, girls or guys? After all, she did use gender neutral language during this ep... So we can’t know for sure, but something tells me Pepa just wants Eddie to officially have someone, and if she learns that Buck actually IS her nephew’s other half? (I can’t call either of these morons ‘better half’, sorry) Then she’d be the first one to throw them a party! And I love that, and I love her. Because after all, she’s not just a sassy queen, she’s not just incredibly loving and caring with her nephew, she was also willing to sacrifice her own image in his eyes, she was willing to be seen as herself, and not as what he expects, in order to help remind him that even if his first marriage failed miserably, he can find the courage, move on and re-commit himself to someone else. And soon maybe Eddie will realize and Pepa will find out who is that someone else that Eddie can have a beautiful committed r/s with...

The designs and info about Luisa’s family!!
Tumblr media
Luissaaaaa!! Luisa is a pretty calm person (thanks to her husband) though with 1 person she is someone else. She doesn’t remember her father at all but every mention of him saddens her up easily. She has a bad relationship with Alma since Mirabel’s disappearance. She’s blaming Alma on it and is always in a fight with her. Luisa is a very kind and good mother, she cares more about her kids than anything she has. Giving birth to her children, julieta, pepa and Bruno was hard, mostly because mirabel wasn’t there, but also because of exhaustion. In her wedding mirabel was there, since she got married way earlier than Isabela. Luisa constantly lives in pressure and guilt, she misses her baby sister very much, her relationship with Isabela is great tough, she can’t handle both of her sisters gone yk?
She often wishes her kids to be closer and not mean to each other because she doesn’t want one of them to be gone one day and the others feeling like she had left. Luis is very thankful to have a husband like Diego, in her teens Diego was her life saver, the only other one than mirabel who could keep her calm. He has the purest heart in Luisa’s mind, she wonders what she would’ve done without him. And she ofc loves her pet birds too!! You can guess who they look like ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Julieta, the oldest triplet, has it the worst of them. She keeps getting pressured which revolves her into forcing herself getting past her own limits. Julieta has many chores daily who take a lot of hard work and time. She gets help sometimes by her father or Tia, she never complains but she tells them that she can do it herself often too cause she fears them being disappointed. Julieta gets bad sleep which makes her get eye bags but she doesn’t want anyone to know, so she hides them with makeup, but because of her lack of sleep she falls asleep anywhere and anytime. Anywhere and anytime literally. The only one who knows about her struggles is her secret boyfriend agustin!! She knows she’s too “young” for love but she never can stop herself from loving him. He cares for her and does everything for her often which is so charming for her, he keeps her up on everything and daily brings her rare flowers he has picked up for her.
Julieta has a bad relationship with her siblings, well, more with pepa. Pepa and her are always fighting, she doesn’t know what pepa has against her but it makes her upset. She’s left out often and bullied by pepa. Her life gets harder with those burdens on her. Bruno is still on okay terms with her but he leaves her out too (mostly because of pepa) and he’s akward to her which makes her feel like she’s boring. Being the “best grandkid” isn’t so great. Also her hair is inspired by isabela’s!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pepa is feisty teenager. She is a mood but it’s not her fault often. Pepa has a lot of free time which she actually doesn’t like that much, she wishes her chores could be more but her gift isn’t that special. She is only friends with 2 people because she is bad with other teens, they either mock her, betray her or straight up do something bad. That’s why she only needs her 2 besties, Bruno and Félix! She loves Félix more than just best friends but she fears that if she steps out of line that she’s gonna destroy her friendship with him so she does everything to keep quiet. Pepa hates julieta with her guts, she hates how julieta gets all the paise, how she gets more chores, more people liking her. She hates everything about her. So she will make it visible.
Pepa is often like an forgotten child who never can find herself, she cares about her looks too much because of others or so that others could at least notice her. Though who she deeply loves are her primo Camilo and Bruno, they both make sure they’re here for her and pepa loves to prank people with his primo or make people scared with his brother very much. She was the one who was the happiest when they found out Dolores was a girl, she always treats Dolores like an little sister and is happy to have her too. She’s also a major daddy’s girl like Dolores used to be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bruno who is done with his life is still holding on! He is pretty sassy but not the mean kind. Like his siblings he gets picked on too but his mama makes sure that they stop doing it to them and everyone fears Luisa so they pretty much stop. He only has little chores and he loves his free time, his gift is awful and he hates it often. He spends most of his free time napping or dealing with pepa’ a shit. He loves pepa, but being dragged here from there, the entire time and then needing to be there for her the entire time can be exhausting too. He feels very bad for julieta, he knows about her lack of sleep but he doesn’t say anything. (He’s scared pepa will do something.) Bruno is also the one who remembers the most from their Tia mirabel, he also loves his Tia, and her disappearance broke him a lot.
He feels very targeted by his grandmother but his mom always makes him feel better. He’s very much a mama’s boy like Camilo, he has often a mother-son lunch with Luisa and they just talk about anything. He still loves his dad very much!! He’s great friends with Antonio too! He loves to hang out with Antonio a lot, just finding him cool and chilling mostly. Sometimes he also likes to babysit Dolores, she gives him a lot of peace or never trouble. (His greatest friends are his rats)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Diego my beloved is one of the sweetest man is the Encanto. He is an amazing husband an amazing father. His job is creating class, either if it’s shapes, decorations, plates etc. he wasn’t much of an approval of Alma but that doesn’t stop him from being included in the family. He’s a chubby and short dude so often Luisa picks him up like a teddy bear and carries him around while snuggling him. He makes sure Luisa doesn’t exhaust herself or eats and drinks, the same goes for his kids too. Diego got raised by a single dependented mother, his protectiveness came from her and he wouldn’t hesitate to stand up for his family members.
Diego was good friends with mirabel too, her disappearance makes him feel a bit lonely sometimes but he handles it. (Not really)
Sooo any thoughts about Luisa’s fam fam?

Encanto Ride the Cyclone AU.
For @glowing-celesticpetals, based on the prompt: “maybe something about Antonio or Bruno in the Ride the Cyclone Au?”
This is the last you’ll see of the living side; the family grieving the loss of the four children.
Comments are always appreciated.
Warning, sensitive topics ahead: character death.
~~~~~~
Just Another Tragic Fact
Bruno sighed to himself.
The four gravestones, all lined up, layered in a variety of plants - Isabela would have hated it if it was all just flowers.
Here lies
Luisa Amalia Rojas Madrigal
14th November 1930 - 14th September 1951
Beloved daughter and sister.
Here lies
Camilo Valentino Estrada Madrigal
28th December 1934 - 14th September 1951
Beloved son and brother.
Here lies
Isabela Cristina Rojas Madrigal
7th August 1928 - 14th September 1951
Beloved daughter and sister.
Here lies
Dolores Victoria Estrada Madrigal
31st August 1928 - 14th September 1951
Beloved daughter, sister and partner.
Seeing it makes it real.
Not that it didn’t feel real watching the crash and seeing their dead bodies be pulled from the wreckage.
The funeral had came and went.
The loss of the children, who had been dubbed ‘Encanto’s Four Saints’, had impacted the town itself. Everyone was draped in mourning garb and music and laughter almost vanished from the streets.
But, of course, it brought the most impact to the Madrigals themselves.
“I’m sorry,” Bruno says to them.
It’s a relatively bright and dry afternoon - considering Encanto has been living in a constant storm since the Cyclone accident.
Pepa must be asleep. She’s done a lot more of that recently.
He doesn’t blame her.
“I should have seen… I should have been able to warn you. Then maybe you’d still be…” he sighs, breaking into tears again.
“Tío Bruno?”
He sniffles. “Hey, Toñito.”
“What are you doing?”
“I thought I’d just come to see them. It’s a nice day.”
“You don’t have to say ‘sorry’. You couldn’t have known what would happen at the fair.”
“No, you all couldn't have known. This is my gift. This is what I’m for. But… I didn’t even think to look and now it’s my fault they’re gone.”
“Still. You can’t blame yourself.”
Tight arms fasten around him.
Bruno accepts the hug.
It probably should be the other way around, it’s not him who has lost his siblings and cousins.
~~~~~~
Antonio doesn’t quite process that they are gone.
He knows they are dead, but… their family has a miracle, why wouldn’t it bring them back?
When a bunch of baby capybaras are born the following week, he names them after his siblings and cousins.
The quietest capybara he names Lola. She was the oldest of the four. She’s always hiding behind his legs. She insists she be carried up and down the stairs. He finds a pinkish red ribbon in Mirabel’s room that he asks his Mama to tie in a bow for Lola.
Next came Luis. He was the biggest of the litter, so Antonio didn’t need to mark him to tell him apart. Luis was more like a playful puppy than anything else, frequently managing to sneak out of Antonio’s room to wander around Casita in search of belly rubs.
Then there was Belita, or Bela, depending on whether or not Antonio was telling her off. Like her mother, Chispi, she was very confident and snarky. However, lacked her mother’s chill. She was full of energy - if Antonio didn’t put her to bed with her siblings, he would be sure she never slept.
And lastly there was Milo, possibly Antonio’s favourite but don’t tell the others. Getting his brother’s name, he was exactly like him. Mischievous, loves food, and maybe a little too dramatic. Milo was good at making him laugh and, after everything, that is what he needed.
He assembles them all before bed, so that when Mama or Papa or both of them come to read his story, they are there too.
Abuela would happily spend time babysitting the four of them while Antonio was at school.
If they came into the kitchen, Tía Julieta would offer them scraps or spare food they could eat.
Tío Agustín had built a little wooden cart that Antonio could pull them around in.
Tío Bruno pretty much adopted them alongside his many rats, as the best pets/children ever.
It was another week later that Antonio got an idea.
“What are you doing, mijo?” His mother asked one day. It was just before dinner - table already set up, but nobody had called them to eat.
Then she noticed the extra chairs and plates that had been added to the table. And Antonio having placed each capybara on their namesake’s chair, which was stacked with pillows, so their heads just about reached the table.
“I thought they could join us for dinner!” He offered. “And Chispi is here too to watch them. I got her a spare chair all by myself.”
Pepa didn’t know what to say. “Is your Abuela okay with this?”
“Why wouldn’t she be? She loves them. I saw her cuddling Milo and Lola when I came home today. I think she likes them more than Tío Bruno’s rats.” He informed, happily.
“Well, but, you know what Tía Julieta is like with animals at the table,” Pepa tried again.
“I don’t think she’ll mind. It’s like having the family back together!”
Thunder rumbled.
“I was meant to ask Bruno something,” she excused herself, brushing through her braid as she walked off.
Antonio stood in silence.
He glances at Chispi, “Did I do something wrong?”
~~~~~~
It’s a silent night.
They are slowly coming out of mourning and adjusting back to normality.
Starting to work again.
The colours of black and dark blue and dark grey begin to fade away.
The eternal storm that Encanto has been wrapped in since September is slowly breaking away. Now it is just occasional spells of heavy rain and sleet.
Antonio has long since been put to bed, with the four capybaras.
The rest of the adults stay up.
What once would have been a night of some wine, a few cards games, music and laughter, is now just a solemn conversation in the candlelight.
They ‘um’ and ‘ah’ over what could have been.
Where and what the children are doing, now that they are no longer among the living.
“And the other one?” Agustín dares to ask. “Did anyone ever come for her?”
“Was she at least identified?” Félix inquires.
“No.” Alma answers. “The order was given for her to be buried today.”
Pepa tugs at her hair, shivering. “I can’t imagine it. A child. Just like the rest of them. Except in an unmarked grave, and not a soul to care.”
“Her poor family,” Bruno remarks. “My sympathy is with them.”
“No.” Julieta shook her head. “To let their child go… and they don’t even care. They either didn’t care to look in the first place or they couldn't recognise their own bloody child. It’s horrible. They don’t deserve any sympathy.”
“Julieta!” Her mother and brother both exclaim, in shock at her attitude.
All the family is, but Agustín and Félix are stunned into silence (not that they find a fault in her statement, it’s just unexpected for her), and Pepa is already nodding her head in agreement.
“I agree.” She said, turning to Julieta. “If it was one of our babies, I would have known instantly. Heartless people.”
@mintsilhouette
I blame you for this. Tiny Tio time! 😁
Tumblr media
Bruno knew he was short. He was all too aware of it, thanks. He’d never been in denial about it and, most of the time, it didn’t bother him. It was just a fact of life. Both of his sisters were bigger than him, his mamá only ended up shorter than him in her old age; Agustín towered over him and Félix was the same height as him. Many people told him that Pedro had been tall too.
The real insult was that the kids were taller than him.
Frankly, it was the nail in the coffin, the last slap in the face from God Himself, the ultimate evidence that Bruno had terrible luck. Before he vanished, Isabela and Dolores were already well on their way to being taller than him (Isa, at age 12, had nearly been eye-level with him) and God knew Luisa was easily the tallest member of the family.
But Mirabel? His dear, sweet Mirabel, who’d never harm a fly?
This was injustice.
“I’m disowning you,” Bruno informed her flatly. Just before her sixteenth birthday, she’d hit one last growth spurt and now she was the same height as Julieta. Taller than Bruno.
Thanks for nothing, genetics.
“Sorry, Tio,” Mirabel laughed. She wasn’t sorry at all, the traitor. Camilo lounged against the counter with a smug grin; he was nearly the same height as Agustín now.
At least he looked a lot less smug when Bruno slapped him with a dish towel.
“Ay, come on!” Camilo groaned, rubbing his arm. “It’s not our fault you’re short! Blame Abuela!”
“I do,” Bruno said, nose in the air. “And whichever family member I inherited the short genes from. And Pepa.” He jerked his head at his sister, who was snickering shamelessly. “She definitely stole all the tall genes.”
“Get born faster next time,” Pepa said, patting him on the head.
“That doesn’t even make any sense, Pepa!”
“Your face doesn’t make any sense.”
Bruno’s eyes narrowed. “Your dress is ugly.”
Thunder rumbled. “You take that back!”
“How old are you two again?” Mirabel asked, arms crossed. Camilo was right back to looking unbearably smug.
By that point, Pepa had him in a headlock and Bruno resigned himself to his fate. Everyone in this damn house was taller than him except Félix and Antonio.
Sighing, Bruno glanced at Antonio who was giggling hysterically over their antics. “You won’t get taller than me, right, Tonito?” he asked.
“I’ll try not to!” Antonio said earnestly, eyes big and shiny. Did Bruno mention he’d simply die and kill for that child? Because he would, no hesitation.
Bless Antonio’s heart, he actually meant that he’d try and stay short. He even asked Félix for tips on how to be short at dinner, which made Félix gape at him wordlessly and the rest of the family (even Alma) burst out laughing.
But Bruno was Bruno. The world had a way of mocking him.
An involuntary vision hit right after dinner; he was dimly aware of someone catching him before he could hit the ground, green took over everything and...
There was a very tall young man, walking by Luisa. He had thick curly hair and a bright, happy grin; round eyes and a gentle disposition. He had a whole pack of animals following him and a jaguar at his side.
Bruno came back to reality and groaned tiredly. For once, it wasn’t because the vision had worn him out.
“Ay, Tonito,” he sighed. “You’re going to betray me, little guy.”
“Oh no!” Antonio’s eyes watered and he grabbed at Bruno, trying to pull him from Julieta’s arms. “Tio, what did I do?”
Bruno looked him dead in the eye. “You’re going to be 6′3″ you not-so-little traitor.”
“What!?” Camilo sounded completely indignant. “Are you kidding me!?”
“Ooh!” Antonio just looked impressed.
“You’re welcome, bébé,” Pepa said, cuddling Antonio.
“I’m sorry, Tio Bruno,” Antonio said with a little pout. “I can still try to be short. We can make a secret short club!”
How a complete gremlin like Pepa and a master of chaos like Félix had an angel like Antonio, Bruno would never understand.
The last of the vision headache started to clear away and Bruno was quick to snatch Antonio from Pepa, lifting him straight up into his arms. Antonio giggled and wrapped around him like a monkey. May as well get all the cuddles he could in, before Antonio inevitably towered over them all.
“I don’t think it’s secret if you announce it, Antonio,” Bruno said fondly, trying to bite back a grin. “But thanks for the offer.”
Commemorative pieces made for birthdays of two siblings of one set, both in 2022.
Color design is my favorite part of Encanto visual language. Whole family’s color schemes make full color wheel together (you may notice Abuela and Bruno – purple and green – are on opposite ends of its radius, the conflict! – but also both are connecting “warm” and “cold” sides of spectrum), and each branch has their own primary color theme. I’ve tried to play with it in these pieces, and quite do like the results.
For the picture of Dolores, I was inspired by fan song “Turn It Down” and production art and line in the screenplay depicting her as “weird cousin”, which I feel wasn’t conveyed in the movie to full effect. When people make note she looks Tim Burton-esque, I’m glad I nailed it:) In sense of composition, it ended looking somewhat like pop-up book, and I find that effect interesting.
For Camilo, I used aforementioned concept of color spectrum and combined it with surrealistic representation of his gift. Speaking for myself, he doesn’t interest me as much as other characters do (gotta blame lack of relevance for the course of story), but has his potential and managed to give me an idea for the art nonetheless.
It’s interesting how Pepa’s children seemingly symbolize different kinds of perception or interactions with reality: Dolores representing sound/hearing, Camilo – sight, as his power creates visual illusion and based on his visual memory, and Antonio – speech/verbal communication. As two pieces turned out sort of complementary, I think, it makes sense to finish this impromptu series with Antonio. We’ll see!
Okay I gotta ask about the Practical magic one bc I love the movie and about the fire instructors one bc it sounds good!
Fire Academy Instructors fic answered here!
Practical Magic AU, my beloved. So it's based on the movie. Buck is Sandra Bullock's character. Eddie is also Sandra Bullock's character.
If you're wondering how that makes sense, it's because Maddie is Nicole Kidman, while Pepa, Abuela, and (to an extent) Adriana are Stockard Channing and Dianne West.
... Look, you just gotta trust me on this one. Here, have Eddie and Buck's super romantic first meeting on the beach at sunrise:
Maddie glances nervously at the sky, which is steadily growing lighter on the horizon.
“We were supposed to leave before sunrise,” she hisses at Buck. “What if somebody sees us?”
“We’re almost done,” Buck says, not looking up from the hole in the ground as he uses both arms to sweep sand and dirt back into it as fast as he can. “Just keep working, it’ll be ok.”
Maddie lifts the shovel and continues to fill the hole in from her side. It’s a dinky little thing, just a foldable camping tool that Buck was lucky enough to have left in his trunk, but it saved them from having to dig by hand the entire night or stop the car with a body in the back seat to make a suspicious purchase. And at least it was sturdier than the frisbee Buck had used until it snapped.
They work steadily, despite their exhaustion. Both of them grow more anxious as the minutes tick by and the sun threatens to peek over the dunes and reeds behind them.
Not for the first time that night, Maddie asks, “We’re really, really sure he’s dead, right?”
“He went into rigor, Mads. I don’t know how much more sure we could be,” Buck says, not bothering to add that even if Doug hadn’t been completely gone when they started, the siphoned gasoline from the jeep’s tank and a lit match probably did the job and the several feet of tightly packed earth they’ve been laboriously shoveling over him for the last few hours made it stick.
“I just don’t understand how you did it,” Maddie tells him. And honestly, neither does Buck. All he knows is that one moment he was simmering with helpless rage, and the next moment Doug had fallen back dead.
“I panicked,” is what he says to Maddie. “He was hurting you, and I didn’t know how to stop him and it just… happened.”
“It doesn’t make any sense, though,” Maddie says. And Buck knows that, alright? He’s never cast a spell in his life. He doesn’t need to be reminded how impossible it is that the first bit of magic he ever cast – by accident, no less – was strong enough to kill a man.
“It was self defense,” he says, because that much he knows. “Maddie, he was going to kill us both.”
“Hey,” Maddie says, looking up from her work and grasping Buck by the arm. “I’m not blaming you. I’m grateful, alright? I don’t feel anything but relief about the fact that he’s dead. You saved me.”
Buck can’t quite make himself lift his head to meet his sister’s gaze, but he acknowledges her with a shaky nod. They lapse back into silence in the semi-darkness as they continue to bury the body as fast as they can.
The early morning light has fully surrounded them by the time Buck finishes packing down the last layer of earth with his feet and begins to sweep loose sand over the now-covered hole.
“Ok,” he whispers to Maddie, “I think we’re just about finished. We should get out of here before anybody sees-”
“Are you making a sandcastle?” a bright, cheerful voice calls out from somewhere over Buck’s shoulder. He turns, startled, and sees a young boy making his way steadily towards them on a pair of crutches with wide, flat disks at the bottom that seem to keep them from sinking into the sand. The boy grins sunnily at them from behind a thick pair of glasses, the sunlight catching on his tousled curls.
“Um,” Buck says dumbly, his body suddenly frozen with panic. Beside him, Maddie is reacting in much the same way.
Before either of them collects themselves enough to answer the boy properly, another voice calls out from behind him, “Christopher! Who are you talking to?”
Art by @lvnamuraart! For @encantobigbang
Then
It starts with Julieta.
At least, when the triplets are pulled in front of an irate Alma, that’s who Bruno blames. Julieta vehemently denies it and points back at Bruno.
Alma takes this to mean it’s Pepa’s fault. Julieta is too good-natured to cause trouble, and Bruno is too withdrawn to partake in antics.
Pepa is tasked with cleaning up the mess and neither sibling offers to help.
The truth, though, lies somewhere in the middle.
“I’m going to make you drink this coffee and then you will barf!” Julieta chases Bruno, holding a spoon in one hand and a full cup of coffee in the other. It sloshes with the motion and soaks her skirt, but she’s too bent on retribution to notice.
Bruno, for his part, is scrambling around the kitchen table, sans ruana for once. “You should have seen your face when you took a sip!”
“Buttermilk!” Julieta howls. “How’d you even get the cream to curdle that fast?”
Bruno stops short and spins around. Julieta nearly slips on the tiles as she comes to an abrupt halt. “I told Pepa to look at the milk,” he says slyly.
Pepa, who leans in the doorway to watch, enters the fray with a clap of thunder. “I’ll make you drink the bottle after Juli’s done with you!”
Faced with two enraged siblings, Bruno makes the tactical decision to retreat.
Unfortunately, Pepa’s legs are longer and she blocks his exit at the door.
“It’s just a little prank,” he wheedles. “Anyway, Juli put double peppers in my soup last time and Mamá thought I was sick because my eyes watered so much!”
Julieta snorts at the memory. “She made me feed you more soup to heal you. It was great.”
“It wasn’t great, it was painful!”
“I only fed you double peppers because you nicked the roll I saved for a snack earlier!”
“But that wasn’t me!”
They turn to Pepa, who senses the shift in mood and starts shuffling backward from her doorway.
“Pepa.” Julieta’s voice is calm, but the grip on her spoon threatens to break the wood. “Did you eat my roll?”
“Which…roll?” Pepa tries going for innocence and fails.
“The roll on the windowsill.”
She squints. “Okay, I might have been walking by the window and Casita just happened to bump the lintel and a roll fell right into my hands! What was I supposed to do?”
“So, it’s Casita’s fault?” Bruno breaks into the growing tension. He lounges against the kitchen table, free from the earlier wrath.
Pepa shoots him a dirty look. If she throws Casita into the fire she’ll get cold showers for a week. “Well…maybe I asked Casita…for a snack…and got Julieta’s roll. But only because my lunch was replaced with a drawing of a sandwich! Who does that?”
Julieta points at Bruno immediately. “You know my drawing sucks.”
“You asked me to draw it!”
She gasps, wheeling on him. “You traitor! You swore you’d take the secret to your grave!”
Bruno bolts, but Julieta doesn’t go for him. Instead, she grabs a bowl off the counter and dips her hand inside. It comes out full of white powder. “Take that, you rotten mangy brother!” She throws it, dousing Bruno in flour.
After a moment of spluttering and wiping his face, he spins back. “You can’t throw flour on me!”
“Don’t point! Mamá says it’s very rude!”
“Rude is all you deserve!”
“Flour fight!” Pepa slides next to Julieta to group two handfuls, throwing one at Bruno and smacking another into Julieta’s head. Her hair is immediately coated—she’ll look good when she’s old with white hair.
“Don’t take my flour!” Julieta forgoes handfuls and throws the remaining flour in the bowl at Pepa. She shrieks as her front is covered, then dives for Julieta. The bowl clatters to the floor, unnoticed.
Also unnoticed, Bruno sidles out of the fray and scrambles for the doorway, intent on escaping.
He runs face-first into Alma.
More Jones Family HCs!
TW: Mentions of Abuse, Death, and Suicide.
Tumblr media
Young Marilyn with a teeny tiny Jones!
She’s about 24 here, and little David would be about 3 months!
Case 60 | The Conspiracy spoilers!
The siblings’ reunion after the explosion!
Tumblr media
Denise and Darcie were terrified that they had lost David for real, especially because they just had a suicide scare..
Upon noticing that their brother was alive and well, they engulfed him into a giant hug! (Admittedly, not so much aware of his injuries and pain, but even David’s far too relieved to care.)
(( Think of the scene in Encanto, with Pepa and Julieta engulfing Bruno in a big hug! That’s how I picture the Jones siblings! (FYI) ))
Toby Jacob Quentin and Orla Zara Quentin
- Denise’s children / David and Darcie’s niece and nephew / Marilyn and Rueben’s grandchildren.
- Twins, 8 yo. (In The Conspiracy)
- British-American
Tumblr media
- Toby has autism.
- Orla is an asthmatic.
- They both have wild fascinations and imaginations, specifically when it comes to mythological creatures.
- Toby likes outer space and history, he’s hoping to maybe become an astronaut someday.
- Orla really loves the ocean and pretty much animals in general, she wishes to become a scuba diver.
- They both have different goals, but they’re actually pretty similar mentally and personality-wise.
Tumblr media
With their mom! They both have a lot of physical and mental similarities with Denise.
Proud Uncle!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
David was always trusted to watch over the twins whenever any of the other family members were out of the picture.
Back when Toby and Orla were younger, David would even bring them into work sometimes. (Since he had no other choice.) The other GPD members really grew to like the twins, they’d often help David care for them too.
The twins call him “Uncle David!”
They also call their aunt “Auntie Darcie!”
Extra // Background Info
- Denise is an asthmatic. (Just like her daughter)
- Darcie is diabetic, and is also considered a hypochondriac. She has to take medication for her anxieties.
- David was named after his step-grandfather. David Jeremiah Jefferson was the only parental figure Marilyn truly had in her youth. He was very understanding towards Marilyn and always tried to include her. Sadly, he was killed by cops after entering the wrong place at the wrong time, traumatizing Marilyn. Blaming her for their stepfather’s death, Marilyn’s siblings never forgave her for the incident.
- Marilyn Willow Burton was the youngest out of 9 children. She wasn’t planned, quickly becoming known as the “Black sheep” of the family.
- The Jones siblings’ father, Rueben Archibald Jones, came from a small yet well supported family. He grew up in England with his mother, grandmother, and uncle. They ended up moving to Grimsborough, and that’s where Rueben met and fell in love with Marilyn.
- After falling pregnant with Rueben’s child. Marilyn was disgraced and kicked out by her family. Rueben’s family took her in though, and they all decided to move back to England together. Rueben and Marilyn married the same year before eventually having their eldest, Denise Joanne.
- The couple lived in peace for the next two years, eventually having David Jeremiah. However, soon after, Marilyn found herself trapped into her biological family’s clutches again. The Burtons threatened her with taking away her children if she doesn’t take them back, leaving her no choice.
- The couple had no choice, but even then, they still vowed to maintain as positive parental figures for their children the best they could. They were determined to give them the best lives they could.
- After five years, Rueben and Marilyn welcomes Darcie Joy into the world. Eventually, they’d go on to move back to Grimsborough after another few years, attempting to start a new life for the kids. However, even then they couldn’t escape the Burtons..
- Despite the Burtons’ strict rules and beliefs, Marilyn and Rueben weren’t giving up on their three children. Even as the Jones siblings grew older, their parents were positive to keep them happy and safe.
Case 52 | The Conspiracy Spoilers!
- When the rest of the Jones family got word about David’s suicide attempt, they were in shambles. Denise and Darcie sobbed into each other, and Marilyn and Rueben had to be held back by hospital staff. They were threatening the doctors for refusing to let them see their son..
- As the Jones’ suffered, the surviving Burtons just laughed at the news. Blaming David for his mental health, the Burtons went on to claim that he’d be “better off dead for not contributing to the family.”
- That was the last straw for Marilyn. She could handle her bio family throwing those kinds of insults at her. But her only son? Hell no! That’s when Marilyn finally snapped. Confronting the Burtons for the last time, Marilyn finally gained the courage she needed to cut them out of both her and her family’s lives once and for all. No more calls. No more texts. No more favors. Nothing. She was done with them forever. And much to her relief, it worked. The Jones family could finally live in peace now..
Tumblr media
(( Dear God- sorry it’s long. I got so carried away. I wanted to provide as much info and context as I could. <\3 ))
(SA)
Mirabel fought the strong urge to cough. She's had it ever since she walked into Isabelas room. And she's been fighting it since then.
And now her grandmother was yelling at her about how she was to blame for everything.
"I don't know why you weren't given a gift but that is no excuse for you to hurt this family!" Abuela yelled at her and Mirabel could barely fight back the next cough. It was getting stronger. A strange feeling in her throat and stomach.
She could feel liquid filling her mouth. She hoped she wasn't going to throw up.
"I will NEVER be good enough for you...will I?" Mirabel felt the liquid fall from her lips but she didn't notice anything other than it was warm wet and sticky. And it made her Abuela stumble back as he face drained of color. There was a startled thunder and then snowfall from her Tia and a few startled or worried exclamations from the rest of the family.
"No matter...how hard I try..." Mirabel had to cough now and she did, just barely bringing her hand up to cough into it. She managed to cover most of it as she coughed hard and it hurt and she had a feeling that liquid was mucus from how much of it was coming up. Was she getting sick?
She hoped not...
Mirabel blinked slowly and stared at her Abuela again as the woman's face was as pale as Tia Pepa normally was. Except for a red smudge on her cheek.
Mirabel furrowed her brow. Was her Abuela injured?
"Are...are you okay Abuela? There's...blood...blood on yer cheek..." It was getting hard to breath all of a sudden, she felt light headed and she saw her Abuela's eyes fill with tears and fear and heard the woman's breath choke a bit.
"Oh God Mi mariposa!" her mama was running towards her but she was running so slow. Everything was so slow and Casita was starting to tilt and spin. Why was everything so slow?
Mirabel slowly looked down to see if Casitas tiles under her feet were moving, it felt like they were at least...but...there was red liquid on her hand.
Mirabel blinked slowly a little bit before she felt Casita give a particularly harsh tilt and swirl and she stumbled a bit.
"Oh..." Mirabel breathed out, blood dribbling down her chin as she slowly looked back up at her family. The last thing she saw was her Abuela lunging at her as Casita spun again.
Then she was unconscious.
Encantober Day Five: Pranks
The Mystery of the Left Glove
It was a cool, calm morning that promised to turn into a beautiful day. Pepa was helping Agustín make breakfast, while Julieta got a start on cooking up her daily supply of food for the town. Camilo was slouched over the kitchen table, not quite awake, but in position to be the first to grab a serving of breakfast. It was quiet. Pleasant.
“THE LEFT GLOVE!”
Félix stormed in from the toolshed, said glove clutched in his upraised fist. “The left glove! I lost this thing months ago, and now it’s just appeared again!”
Pepa exchanged a confused look with Agustín, not sure why Félix was so worked up about it. “Good?”
“No, mi vida! Not good! Because now the right glove is missing! As it was two months ago, before it was swapped for the left! And again, two months before that!”
Julieta whipped around, spraying wet dough from the wooden spoon clutched in her hand. “It’s los duendes!”
They’d all heard about Julieta’s mischievous elf problems. Portions of meals disappearing while her back was turned, ingredients running out more quickly than they should, the occasional odd whisper of a voice.
Yes, they’d heard all about it.
Pepa exchanged a rather more droll look with Agustín, this time. They didn’t say anything, but Julieta caught it anyway and tossed her hands, flinging more dough around.
“Oh, you’ll live in a magical valley in a magical house full of magical people, but los duendes are too much for you?”
Agustín wisely didn’t comment. Wiping flecks of dough off his glasses, he turned to Félix. “Are you sure you aren’t just misremembering which one was lost?”
Félix was shaking his head before Agustín even finished his sentence. “No, no. I thought I was going crazy, but now I am certain. Camilo!” He whirled on their son, who squawked and sat up straight.
“It wasn’t me!”
“Just like gradually making the legs on my chair shorter wasn’t you?”
“That wasn’t me, either!”
“And filling Isabela’s shoes with wet paint?”
“Okay, that one was me.”
Which actually brought up a good point. Pepa tilted her head and hummed. “I don’t think it was Camilo. He doesn’t have the subtlety or patience for that.” Camilo squawked again, this time in offense. She shrugged apologetically. “I’m sorry, niño, but it’s true.”
As far as Pepa was concerned, The Mystery of the Short Chair remained unsolved, and it seemed The Left Glove might join its ranks. She suspected Dolores was the culprit behind the former, based on the knowing look she’d had in her eye when they all finally noticed that Félix’s chair was getting shorter with every meal. Although, honestly, the tricks reminded her a lot more of…
No one. They reminded her of no one.
“I’m telling you,” Julieta groused, turning back to her mixing bowl. “It’s los duendes.”
------
Okay, so maybe it was a little mean.
But there wasn’t a lot of entertainment to be had, and driving Félix up the wall with plausibly deniable little tricks had always been fun.
Bruno felt a little bad that Camilo often took the blame, but the boy had embraced and eventually earned his reputation as a prankster. His were flashier than what Bruno preferred, but he hoped Camilo was starting to pick up the finer art of psychological warfare, through observation if nothing else.
Bruno was sorry he couldn’t mentor him directly, but in a way, he still felt like he was passing things on to his nephew.
Even if no one knew it.
Like anyone else I wasn't happy with Buck donating but now that it's done and we know Bucks parents are coming back the back half. I'm thoroughly fascinated to see what this hot mess becomes.
Because here is the one thing that always bothered me after the S4 finale. There was no point in Eddie telling Buck that in S3 he made Buck, Christopher's gaurdian.
1. It did nothing to curb Bucks reckless tendencies. It clearly didn't add to his own self worth as of yet.
2. They clearly planned to have Eddie mend fences with his parents. Even pushing into this season to show him seek his father out for advice
3. It wasn't used during Christopher's break down as a tool to help him see if anything happened to Eddie he would stay with Buck. He would have his chosen family and Carla still.
That scene wasn't a cliffhanger and honestly could have been done any way. He could have just said your my brother my best friend, I need you to know your not expendable to me. I never want you to step in front of a bullet for me.
Fathers is such a recurring theme in Buddies storyline. So to any anons who are bummed or feeling impatient. Like I don't know what the story will be but they clearly have been working on one and I think it's gonna be amazing.
Hi Nonnie! Thank you for the lovely ask!
I agree with a lot of your bottom line, but if it’s okay, I”d like to also share my own POV?
I have to say I do think there was a point to the legal guardian reveal. It didn’t solve all of Buck’s issues with his self-esteem and his recklessness, but I think that at that moment, it helped. Buck was sitting there by Eddie’s hospital bed, blaming himself and expressing self-destructive (even suicidal) notions, and Eddie told him in the firmest, most loving way possible to quit it. That Buck’s not expendable. That he has a family that needs him. A family which chose him. And yeah, that’s coming after the rest of Buck’s life taught him differently. When you’re running on an empty tank your entire life, one can of gasoline doesn’t fix all the damage that took place along the years. Healing does not happen at once. It doesn’t happen with one statement of love. It happens over time. It happens with repetition. With constant reminders. It happens thanks to the consistency of love. I mean, I think that this is true even for people who didn’t grow up deprived of love, but especially for them. It has to be a series of moments, not just one. So I think that reveal is one in a chain of meaningful statements of love that Buck and Eddie have had and will continue to have together, starting with their initial, mutual one in 201, and it continues in 303 with Eddie’s declaration of trust in Buck, in 414 and the guardianship reveal, as well as Buck being there for Eddie during and after his breakdown in s5.
Yes, I love the journey of healing Eddie is having with his dad! I love that they both are healing and growing. And I expect we might see some more of that with Buck and his own parents, since 405 only started to lay the groundwork for that, but hasn’t had a chance to continue that theme since. But no, I don’t think it has a bearing on how essential the guardianship reveal is. Ramon is someone Eddie is coming to trust more, but Buck has always been the person he trusts the most in the world, even over Abuela and Tia Pepa, who unlike Ramon had always been there for the Diaz boys.
And alongside all of that, I agree with you that there were other ways in which Eddie could have told Buck “I want and need you.” He didn’t, because the most meaningful thing in Eddie’s life is being a dad. And he knows Buck loves kids and that he treats Chris as if he were his own. So Eddie is aware nothing will get to Buck more than the statements we heard in 303 and 414. And yes, that’s because fatherhood plays a really significant role in Buddie’s storyline. They would have been the best of friends and soulmates even if there were no Chris, I have no doubt about it. But Chris does exist and he helped turn them from just partners and soulmates into co-parents and a family unit, too. So every time themes of fatherhood are explored, it very much plays into what they have, and it’s a part of why I wrote in my 608 meta that I do think both Buck and Eddie’s storylines this season along these themes need to converge with them communicating about it all. And I’m looking forward to it! I believe that’s more or less what you’re saying as well? So I’m excited for all of us to see how it all unfolds in the 6a finale and in 6b!
Thank you again, I hope you have a great day, hon! And as always, here is my ask tag! xoxox
How did the adults react after hearing about girls' abuse?
Nobody knows what to say.
Agustín, as mentioned previously, joins Isabela in teaching Pedro a lesson.
Pepa blames herself for not being there for Dolores or stepping in. She collapses to her knees, crying, a hurricane going on overhead. Camilo and Antonio (though the latter doesn’t quite understand) do their best to comfort their mother, assuring her it isn’t her fault.
Félix goes straight to Dolores, embracing her and apologising. She gladly accepts the hug from her father and forgives him, for he couldn’t have known what was going on. She’s been deprived of comfort for years, she’s obviously going to take it.
When it’s revealed that Julieta knew about Mirabel, there is an air of disgust from Pepa and Félix, but they don’t say anything to her in the moment; busy with their own children. Agustín stops fighting Pedro and just stares at her in shock, unable to find the words to say anything to her.
Meanwhile, Julieta goes to do the same as Félix but Luisa pushes her away. (Mirabel is busy trying to breakup the fight between Isabela and Pedro). She does manage to apologise to Luisa, who does thank her and says “I love you” back, but she doesn’t ever mention anything about forgiveness.
Why I don’t like Encanto…
(Just to remind you all that all this is just my personal opinion and interpretation, and that you don’t have to agree with me, as long as you don’t harass me for it)
Look, I know you’re already asking; “Toa! You write a ton of AUs for this very film! How can you possibly dislike it??”
Easy; the message of generational trauma is terribly handled, along with a shit ton of other issues I have with the story of the film.
Allow me to list them for you…
Mirabel, a 15 year old child who had been emotionally abused and left out for a decade, had to do everyone else’s (including adults’) emotional labor and had to bring the entire family back together… I know I already ranted about all that here, but I will repeat it.
So you’re telling me that Mirabel only realized her self-worth after having to fix her whole family…? And that her only reward for putting up with all that neglect and emotional abuse was that her family stopped neglecting and emotionally abusing her…?
And let’s not forget said family finally stopped neglecting her and acknowledging Mirabel only after she did their emotional labor. Throughout the movie, they either brushed her off, ignored her, or where too busy with their own problems to notice her, and it’s only after Mira saved the miracle and brought them together that they acknowledged her!
Alma’s apology was very, very bad. Throughout most of it, she just explained what happened in her past and Pedro’s death (which was traumatic, yes), and this overshadowed the whole apology! And then she just hugged Mira like it’s nothing? Isn’t Mirabel allowed to express her pain of being neglected and left out for 10 years?? Heck, did Alma even say “Sorry”?? When the deleted apology scene felt more sincere and true, there’s a problem!
Isabela didn’t even apologized for treating Mira like shit for (presumably) a decade! Again, she just hugged Mira after singing a song and all was forgiven! And don’t give me the “That’s how siblings act” and “Isa was pressured by Alma” excuses, because they don’t work! Isa is 21, an adult! An adult who should know better then to bully her 15 year old sister for years!
So Bruno apologized to Pepa for “ruining” her wedding with a joke and wanted to say even more apologies. He didn’t have to apologize for anything! Everyone vilanized him for his visions, complained about him and even shunned him! Everyone wronged him, so Bruno didn’t owe a single “Sorry” to them!
But no one apologized to him! They all just accepted him back like nothing has happened!
Hell, Pepa and Julieta at least got an “I’m sorry” from Alma, but Bruno couldn’t even get that?!
Pepa and Julieta just ran up and hugged him like it’s fucking nothing! Like he wasn’t shunned and hid in the walls with horrendous living conditions for 10 years! They just didn’t address that!
And Alma did the exact same thing! She just hugged him upon seeing him, said how she felt like something was missing, and didn’t even apologize for treating him like shit and basically shunning him!
Pepa had no excuse shitting on her brother like that in WDTAB and presumably for a decade. I’ve seen some people say; “Her wedding is just an excuse! She actually missed Bruno after he left.” but that doesn’t excuse her villanizing Bruno, especially after something that happened more than two decades ago! Yes, I know her gift is one of the worst and that it heavily fucked up her life, and I sympathize with her for that, but that doesn’t excuse her from vilanizing Bruno! If anything, for all Pepa knew, he could very well be dead, but she still shat on him!
And it wasn’t even Bruno fault for what happened at her wedding. It wasn’t anyone’s fault! He made a joke, Pepa didn’t take it well and unintentionally caused a hurricane she couldn’t control on her wedding. Knowing that information, I think neither of them where at fault or to blame. Yet Pepa blamed Bruno for it, and he apologized! What the heck?? He didn’t have to!
None of the grandkids even offered to share their room with Mira after her failed ceremony, not even Luisa! Julieta and Agustín either quickly gave up finding a solution, or didn’t step in at all! Mira was just forced to sleep in the nursery, a room meant for children, even in her teen years! Reminding her daily that she isn’t special like the rest of her family!
After singing a whole song about how her family was great and amazing, Mirabel wasn’t even included in the group photo at Antonio’s ceremony that same day! Julieta, Agustín, Luisa or Antonio should’ve included her, but they didn’t! They just took the picture without her like she wasn’t a part of the family!
Bruno outright called Alma, his own mother, out on her mistreatment of Mira, only to be cut off by Alma hugging him and welcoming him back as if she hadn’t shunned him and saying he didn’t care about the family…without a single apology… What the hell?! This was suppose to be his big moment where he finally stands up to his mother who has shunned and scapegoated him, and he does it for his niece who was also a scapegoat and who is still a child! But Alma just cuts him off with a hug and simply welcomed him back as if nothing had happened?? And everything was cool again??? Fuck you!
With all these writing issues that really bother me, I don’t like the movie…
It all just seriously taints the film for me…
We seriously need an Encanto series. Where the family acknowledges their treatment towards Mira and Bruno, and where everything can get properly addressed while having relatable slice-of-life adventures.
But I know what you’re asking; “Toa, why would you make uncountable AUs for a film you don’t even like?”
Easy. Because I love the characters. I love writing different stories and featuring them that are far different from the film, for you all.
And I will keep writing AUs, despite the film. ^^
It’s the story I take major issue with, not the characters.
I’m just going to hope that Lightyear, Strange World and Elemental’s stories and writing are better…
TO MAKE WITH THESE HANDS - By ChasetheWindTouchtheSky
ao3 link here!
Buck opens his mouth to explain, when Chris beats him to it. “Buck is making my dad his favorite mole with a recipe he got from my bisabuela. He’s being really weird about it.”
“Chris!” Buck cries because he doesn’t know what else to do with himself. Honestly, he thinks he’d rather take another repelling trip at this point.
The butcher clicks his tongue. “Wow, you worked your way into getting a family recipe? I still can’t convince my mother-in-law to give me her brisket rub and I’ve been married to my wife for eleven years. You must have really earned your place.”
“My Abuela doesn’t even have it.” Chris offers, like the traitor he is.
The butcher whistles. “I wouldn’t share that information at the next family reunion, you’ll be on the wrong side of a family feud.”
“I-It’s not like that, I—”
“Dad’s afraid to bring Buck to Texas because he doesn’t want to scare Buck away. He thinks my Tias will break him.” Buck stares. Chris shrugs. “I heard him talking on the phone to Pepa about it.”
“Well, we better help your Buck earn some points then, right? Walk over here and we’ll go over the basics of pork and how to find the best cuts. Ready to learn?”
Buck gapes between the butcher and Chris. “Yeah,” he manages weakly, in a way he can’t blame on the day. “Let’s learn about pork.”
the parallels between bruno and isabela
(an analysis absolutely no one asked for)
in one of the official encanto books it was said that bruno had been the golden child of his generation before becoming the exiled outcast. i like to think about how sad this is especially when you consider the parallels with isabela, the current golden child of the family. and i think it makes a lot of sense as bruno is the spitting image of pedro, much like isabela is the spitting image of a young alma, therefore i think alma saw pedro in bruno the same way she sees herself in isabela.
and this was very much a double edged sword, as while it meant he was the golden child and the favorite, it also meant that alma was very hard on him, especially when he showed to be not like pedro. i think everyone kind of resented bruno for this reason because he was alma’s perfect golden child and everything he said came true. so he grew used to being blamed for everything because he took his golden child status in stride, and i think he and pepa had a similar dynamic to isa and mirabel.
when he had his last vision, he felt like a failure, because he was so used to being blamed for everything that he truly believed that if he had a vision of the miracle dying, it was his fault. he knew how hard alma was on him, and so he couldn’t face her after he had that vision. so he decided to just disappear. when he exiled himself into the walls it was like he was finally shedding his golden child status, as there was no one around to tell him who to be or what to do, just him and his rats.
bruno leaving truly broke alma. not only because it felt like a betrayal of his golden child status, but also because she had projected pedro’s personality on him so much that by losing bruno, it felt as if she’d lost pedro all over again. and in a way, she had, as bruno’s disappearance was confirmation that bruno was his own person and not just a replacement for pedro, and she didn’t like that.
the same thing happened with isabela. she was the favorite, the perfect golden child. the more she grew to look almost exactly like young alma, the more alma projected herself onto her. and just as with bruno, this proved to be a double edged sword. as while isabela was the golden child and favorite, it also meant that alma was hard on her. alma tried to shape isabela into a perfect version of herself, everything she wanted to be when she was younger, but she also projected her own insecurities onto her and was as hard on isabela as she was on herself, especially when she showed to be like the parts of alma she didn’t like about herself.
when isabela broke free from alma’s perfect projection and started actually being herself, it hurt alma because it once again reminded her of the things she didn’t like about herself, and by isabela not being the perfect golden child, not only was it conformation that isabela was her own person and not just an extension of alma, but it was also a reminder to alma that she herself wasn’t perfect. in losing bruno, she lost pedro, and in isabela’s failure to be perfect, she saw a failure of her own.
isabela’s line in wdtab says a lot about this. firstly, she’s the only one to get a positive vision, which shows not only how kind and caring bruno is to go out of his way to tell only the good things to his niece, but i think also shows how he relates to her and sees himself in her. he was the golden child, he knows what it’s like to be put on a pedestal and the pressures and expectations that come with it, and he sees the way alma puts isa on a pedestal and projects onto her just like she did with him, so he makes sure to only tell her the good things to ease the pressure, because he doesn’t want isa to end up the way he did.
i also think the wording is important: “he told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine.” he doesn’t just promise her a perfect life, but specifically the life of her dreams. which is kind of sad and ironic at this point in the movie, because to everyone else, it seems as if the prophecy has come true. her life seems perfect. however, it isn’t the life of her dreams. as perfect as her life may seem, it’s not what she wants at all, so the prophecy has not come true yet. when isa breaks free from alma’s mold, her life no longer seems perfect, but she’s finally living the life of her dreams, doing what she wants. the prophecy has finally come true.
i like to think that bruno would be so proud to come back to the family and see how isa has broken from alma’s projection and is finally doing what she wants, and learned to be herself, and happy to see that his prophecy came true and she didn’t end up like him.
