i want to vent for a moment about another trope? TTRPG Read-Through: Patchwork World

Here is a read-through I did last year (originally posted on Twitter) of one of the most unique PbtA games I've ever read: Patchwork World by Aaron King! - Christian

Credits up first. I know a lot of these folks and they are really cool! Excited to dig into this. I've heard good things, and it's been a while since I've read or played any Powered by the Apocalypse.

This is a cool, strong set up for me. I really like settings that ask characters to face a changing world and either take up change themselves or work to restore the old way of things. It's a headspace I find myself in a lot IRL these days so it's fun to explore.

I'm interested to see how the no stats, no playbooks angle of this game works, considering playbooks are typically such a staple of PbtA games.

Standard three-tired success, mixed success, fail forward resolution for rolls here and questions on the moves determine your bonus to the roll. Easy peasy. +2 is the max bonus.

Other types of rolls are described here. Interested to see how they come into play. I also love clocks and use them in pretty much every game I run so it's nice to see those laid out here too.

We just love a lil guy, don't we folks?

A good chunk of the opening here is spent on laying out a lot of solid foundations of roleplaying generally. It feels like a book (so far) that would work for entirely new players. It doesn't feel essential for me, but I never mind a game that supports varied experience levels.

Character creation is wide open, especially since there aren't playbooks and the text stresses that character creation is very much worldbuilding because of this. Fate-like concepts and tags are in here too which are things I generally enjoy. I like the Drawback mechanic.

Moves are in the playback I set in the other room so I'm gonna go grab those. You get two chosen moves and everyone has access to a number of default moves. You've got three other life/XP things to keep track of too. I'm especially interested in Hex.

There are a lot of moves! They seem quite varied and often very weird, fitting well with the titular patchwork world. You can have a duck's slick soul to dodge more easily or a magical space suit or speak to birds or be good at cartography. Overwhelming, but in an exciting way.

You also choose a community as a party. While PCs all have their original homelands (before the end of the old worlds), you know have a community that gets its own little sheet. This is a cool reshaping of the Gangs from Blades. I also like how the community can change over time.

Coming back to a PbtA game after months of more OSR-minded stuff, I think a lot of what these games contain are things that experienced players would say you could just do in any game at any time that it makes sense in the story, but I do find value in stating what's possible.

Esp since many players come to games with artificial limits on their options (whether that's from video games, more traditional RPGs, etc.). I just think good GMing here requires making sure that the players don't limit themselves just to the bevy of explicit options either.

GM moves (mostly to guide the response to failed rolls). I really think the community aspect of this set up is one of the biggest appeals to me so far. That and the wild list of moves, which I'm sure makes for amazing parties of characters.

I always feel like it's never something I should be in my own writing (for some probably unnecessary reason), but I enjoy the first-person, casual writing style throughout the book. Makes for a very chill read.

Good to see this game employs the Branson Reese style of NPC naming.

Stress acts as a single catch-all health and challenge rating for NPCs. Ideally, I'd hope this would help lead to the PCs approaching encounters with more than just violence.

Sections like this are what I'm referring to when I say this book feels very friendly to new players. It's got little anecdotes and thoughts like this throughout.

Look, it's been a while since I've seen A Christmas Story but... it didn't have ghosts in it right?

There's a sample adventure in the back (which I'll skip for this read-through) plus loads of random tables. Some wonderfully bizarre stuff in the characters and faction tables. Really gives you a good idea for how gonzo you can go with the setting.

Love these two in particular

Optional rules include hard mode (which I just think is kind of funny to see in PbtA, but could be cool if you lean heavy into the post-apoc setting) and some optional moves. I like that some moves focus on romance, something I enjoy IRL but never think to focus on in games.

I was wondering why this was the sixth edition!

That's all for the book itself. Going back to the packet to dig into the things I missed. Some expected bits in here but always one or two unique options I really enjoy. Leaking hex is cool (and could have some troubling cascade effects in certain situations).

I definitely wish, at least in sitting down to read like this, that the contents of the player packet was also in the book itself. I think PbtA has this tendency of leading to loads of pages on the table, but it can make them very easy to pick up and play or to learn as you play.

That element is definitely here, but I think the vast number of wide-ranging moves and the excitement that would drum up in my player group would more than makeup for that initial overwhelming feel of "whoa, that's a lot of papers out on the table".

Overall, it's the most I've wanted to play a game in this style in a while. I like that the base setup for the world is very much up to the players to determine via the characters they make. I like that PCs here will probably feel unlike any other folks have played before.

The community aspect feels like where I'd want to center my story around, as a player. Seeing that shift and change over time feels like it would be very rewarding and would help lean into the "the old world is dead, what do we want the new world to look like?" theme I enjoy.

Because Aaron King is cool and recently hit a lot of Twitter followers, Patchwork Worlds is now Pay-what-you-want over on Itch.

I absolutely love all of your Mordecai stories! Could you write one where reader is specifically male and how that would affect the relationship? Or a more general scenario where Mordecai makes a habit of fixing reader’s appearance for symmetry, definitely not because he wants an excuse to stand so close to them.

hhhhhh okay i had to prioritize this because i just. i have so much brainrot about this stupid hitman esp with a male partner in particular !!! This will be adjacent to the part 3 of Romantic HC's with him (and I included ur cute symmetry idea in that one instead!) I have a lot of thoughts..

First off, I HC him as gay ace, and that is what I tend to go off whenever I write him. These are my own thoughts and obvs yall can have something totally different! With that said...

He would be slightly more open and have an easier time getting to know a man, simply because of the socialization and gender expectations in the 20's. With women he's always been uneasy because of the unspoken, unknown "expectation" of interacting with them. (though if she wasn't ladylike at all and toted around a gun or dressed masc he'd probs feel otherwise, see him interacting fine with Serafine). Again, 1920's socializing acting as if women are an entirely different creature from men and should be treated as such. So, he'd be a little more accepting of touches and attention from a man because that's more familiar, but we're talking 10% more. Not a huge jump.

As stated in the previous HC's, this is still years of building trust between the two of you before he's willing to acknowledge any feelings. If you're openly gay or bi during this time, he's never been judgmental about it like some might be. Actually, Mordecai doesn't think about your potential love life in the slightest, at least until you two begin to get closer. Then suddenly he's thinking about it.

Attraction has never been something he's experienced, at least not in the way he's heard men talk about women (which, ew, that kind of talk is disgusting). But as you two become closer, he develops emotional and physical attraction toward you; both are confounding and frustrating. It's less sexual attraction and more a very intense physical admiration, even if that person doesn't have conventionally attractive features.

(Personally I think he'd be very attracted to either a very tall and muscular type - similar to Viktor - or a smaller, slender more "pretty" kind of guy. Two opposites on a spectrum, which he admires for different reasons.)

Regardless, it's awful, Mordecai has no idea why this is hitting him just now in his mid-fucking-20s after a whole adolescence of not seeing people that way. The physical admiration comes and goes, but the emotional attraction always hits him like a train when you're both together.

This is probably Totally Normal for close friends who are also comrades that murder people together. This is fine.

Note it's possible you have plenty of other admirers, which gives him even more agitated and conflicting feelings. If it's women fawning over you - even if you aren't interested - that's easy for Mordecai to deal with. Women have bothered him plenty of times, at least until they realize how cold and awkward he is and give up. Men flirting with you is a bit of a different story, especially if you've always been open and comfortable with your own sexuality. The women seem harmless, the men do not. You have this ease and freedom with them that Mordecai doesn't understand and somewhat envies. He can't brush off their attention as being "silly" like the women are; they don't just want to dance with you. It agitates him so much and he struggles to fully articulate why. Maybe a small voice in his head tells him that if he were more normal, maybe you might be just as attentive to him. That you have expressed your trust and affection to him, but he struggles in returning it, so it's no wonder you might seek it elsewhere.

In this time period, there's incredibly little understanding around the concept of asexuality (and even then, it's written as though it's a disease or mental failure). Mordecai has certainly never heard of such things, and he's never struggled with his lack of sexual attraction until his feelings began developing for you. This is why he becomes so jealous if you're free with your love and attention to others. Before you both were ever a real "thing" (but the feelings were very much there, hanging unspoken between you), Mordecai would start huge arguments about whoever you'd be sleeping around with. He hadn't cared for years, and now he does? Seriously, if you smell like another man Mordecai goes from 0 to 100 and barks at you to wash up. You point out that Viktor always smells like sawdust and oil but Mordecai doesn't shove him into the bathroom.

Viktor thinks whatever you two have going on with these spats is just weird. More than once he's yanked you both by the neck and tossed you out of the garage for being so noisy.

(Note if you're someone whose on a similar wavelength as Mordecai, or you simply don't enjoy sleeping around with strangers and prefer close connections, that jealousy simmers down considerably. No, these are not healthy reactions or feelings he has. He has never been a well-adjusted individual. )

Once you both are more of an established ""couple"" (if thats what this strange long-term pining and angsting and yearning that's finally become something of a real Thing can be called), Mordecai still wouldn't consider himself "like that". Not because of shame of being gay, but because he genuinely hasn't felt this way toward anyone, man or woman. You're his exception. He likes you.

All the drama aside... Because of the odd nature of you and Mordecai's relationship, plus his closed-off personality and the odd hours you two keep, no one actually suspects the relationship is romantic for a very long time. Mitzi and maybe Atlas have caught onto something, especially if you're open about your attraction to men, but they assume it's a one-sided crush on your part. Viktor is the only one who picks up that Mordecai might feel the same, and only because he's around you both so often and he sees the odd looks and lingering touches - and notably, how you two interact with him is very different with how you interact with each other. Not his business, but he'd protect you both in a heartbeat. Viktor never says it out loud, but he's aware of other associates or employees who may not be accepting of you two and could be a potential threat. He watches them very carefully.

(And related to that - Atlas doesn't think twice about taking you in and treats you with just as much respect as his other employees, which would be remarkable for a known gay man in the 20's. That's probably how he got you signed onto being a triggerman...)

And related to any threats, Mordecai will go fucking feral on anyone who tries to threaten or hurt you for your sexuality. It doesn't matter if you're playing it cool or ignoring them, he's already got his gun out. Viktor will join in too, but he at least asks if you want to kill them or "just" scare them shitless.

So, in closing ... Yes, the relationship would be a little more complicated with a masc person vs a femme because of the time period and the lack of vocabulary+understanding of Mordecai's own identity. A person whose experienced and very comfortable in their own skin would help him out a lot, whether they're asexual or allosexual, someone whose willing to just sit and talk these things out (even if sometimes he's mortified to even bring it up). If the person is just as questioning and confused, well, it might end up more chaotic, hah.

Hi! I pondered today the post you've reblogged asking people to examine their biases in how they perceive transmascs. My thought was only vaguely related, as it was more related to bisexualism. I hope it's not an issue. I'd like to share it, as I respect you a lot. (Thank you lots for introducing me multigenderism! I didn't knew it was an option and I'm exploring a little! :3)

Specifically I was thinking about the erasure of men perceived as feminine from mlw relationships. There's this... assumption, that feminine men are almost inherently (OOF) unable to be attracted to women? (Putting aside fandom bias to ships involving women in the first place.) What's up with that??I cannot quite put it in the words properly but... it just doesn't sit right with me. Idk, it feels... emasculating? Like, being a femme is a vibe, a presentation, etc, but if it's a femme man it's still *very much a man*. This + typical bisexual erasure and overall assuming you can clock people's sexuality on appearance alone... Probably more that eludes me. I'm still grappling with it. Idk, there's probably much more to say here but... it's upsetting emotionally to me, personally. I'm an afab woman (maybe more) so please, *please* take my input with a grain of salt. It's just that I love men. I adore them. I want to learn more about them, learn their struggles, help them if I can. I might love them even more out of spite when biphobic people scorn at it bc it's not queer enough. Here's the catch: My type specifically is femmes. As a femme woman. So ironically my longing towards men always felt more "broken" and "unachievable" then towards women. Bc for years it felt like... femme men would never want me, by the virtue of who I am. With what body I was born and feel at home in. Idk where I'm going with this at this point. I guess I too wish people would examine their biases. In this case towards feminine men. For the sake of all men, trans, cis, femme/butch... and people who love them. Emasculating men hurts everybody. Even women, such as myself. I hope I haven't at any point sounded as equating "feminine men" to "transmasc", btw! I do NOT believe transmasc are feminine! If at any point I was coming of like that by bringing both in one ask I'm sorry! Here I'll conclude. I still have much to learn thought. I actually posted an article written by a femme bi man talking about this topic a while back!

This is very much an issue. The way I interpret the different ways biphobes react to bi men/women is that its related to how patriarchal gender roles operate. All bisexuals are targeted by the idea that they are either "really" straight or "really" gay because of binarism. Women are resource objects, so cishet men's access to them needs to be preserved; therefore, bi women must be REALLY straight. Men, on the other hand, are competitors, and queerness is one of the major ways men are seen as failing that competition; as a result, bi men must be REALLY gay because their attraction to men(/feminine presentation, if they are femme) means they could never successfully compete at manhood. (This is ofc just a general trend; sometimes people, especially queers, will insist a bi woman must be really a lesbian esp if shes butch, and cishets may insist a bi man must be really straight especially if hes masc/butch).

I identify as bisexual and as a femme man, although I'm not sure if I would consider myself attracted to women as a man (multigender sexuality is weird but fun!), but know there very much ARE femme bi men out there who would love to be in a relationship with you. I think a lot of mlw who have a preference for femininity have experienced this, queer or not, because there is so little visibility for GNC men who are attracted to women- and because there are women who are queerphobic about the idea of a woman dating a GNC man.

then when he finally managed to leave the house with you, his hands wouldn't stop sweating so he was constantly wiping them against his pants.

seeing you all dressed up next to him with such an adorable anticipating gaze, made mammon's heart thump against his chest.

he had every intention of making this the best day you've ever experienced in your life but he was sure he was going to need to stop by the clothing store if he sweated anymore through his shirt.

sensing his nervousness, you chuckled endearingly, taking a hold of his hand before he could retaliate, pulling him along with the excuse that he was going to make you guys late to the movies.

Species: demon/vengeful spirit

Cause of death: Strangled

Profession: murdering bad people and helping the wronged

Preferred killing style: waiting until the victim walks up a dark staircase or hallway at midnight or 3 a.m., then stabbing in the back, and burning the body (sometimes just burning alive depending on the type of person)

Preferred weapon: Kitchen knife

Abilities: invisibility, quick reflexes, night vision, apparition, voice mimicry, shape-shifting, paralysis, revivival

She only attacks people who intentionally hurt others and have no regard for anyone else, like any kind of abusers, rapists, pedophiles, murderers, child neglecters, cheaters, those who physically harm others on the streets for fun, druggers, etc. If you don't do any of that bad stuff, she'll leave you alone to live your life, but if you do, she'll stalk you for a while & haunt you by turning invisible and whispering creepy things, mimicking the voices of the people you've hurt or mimic the sound of child laughter, scratching the walls, giving you nightly sleep paralysis, standing menacingly in the dark, and moving things around, then when the time comes for her to strike a month later, she'll wait until you walk back to your room at precisely midnight or 3 a.m., then she'll sneak up behind you and stab you 6 times in the back, then reveal herself to you as you lay helpless and slowly die, being the last thing you ever see, and saying the last thing you will ever hear in a demonic voice: "this would've never happened if you had never done what you've done". And once you finally die, she'll drag your lifeless body to the middle of a dirt field and set it ablaze. Or, if you've done worse, she'll just skip the stabbing and drag you to the field and set you ablaze while you're still alive or remove anyone else along with their belongings from your home, lock you inside, and set it ablaze with you inside. Then she'll revive the ones you killed and give the ones you've hurt a streak of pure good fortune and correct their lives before moving on to another victim. But if you truly correct your ways and become a better person within the month that she's haunting you, she just might give you a second chance and spare your life. And you'd better do it because there's no other way to get rid of her.

Ways to tell that she's haunting you:

You are experiencing nightly sleep paralysis at 3 a.m. and seeing a blonde and blue haired demon girl in a black suit with black and green eyes, occasionally saying, "You still have time to right your wrongs" before it ends

You're constantly hearing child laughter or the voices of the people you've hurt out of thin air

You're hearing scratching on your walls

You're having a streak of sudden bad luck

Your dog constantly starts barking at nothing (she's completely visible to animals)

You occasionally catch your cat purring and rubbing on nothing (she's a sucker for cats)

You occasionally wake up to the smell of sulfer and chemicals

You sometimes see a dark figure in the dark at the top of your staircase or at the end of your hallway

You sometimes come home to the words "You still have time" written in blood on your front door

Things not to do while being haunted:

Call an exorcist (because she's too strong)

Continue to do bad things during the month (because she'll only escalate the torture)

Try to move out (because she'll always follow you)

Just not leaving your room when the time comes (because she'll just extend the time and wait until you do)

Immediately go back to your old ways once she detaches from you (because she'll just attach herself to you again and not even wait a month to kill you the second time)

What to do to survive her and end the haunting:

Take her advice and change your ways for the better before the month ends. She's nice enough to give you time to do so, so take this advantage and make time.

Facts:

She's a sucker for animals, especially fur babies, and if her current victim has a cute pet like a dog, cat, hamster, mouse/rat, etc., she can't help but play with them in her free time, And the fact that she's only visible to animals when she's invisible makes it all the better experience

If a victim was hurt in some way and only does the things she usually targets people for out of grief and not knowing of any other way to cope with it, she'll go easy on them and the sleep paralysis won't happen every night, she tries not to freak them out with her whispering by instead saying things like, "you're better than this" or "there's healthier ways to cope with your trauma" instead of the creepy things she'd usually say

She would occasionally target racist or homophobic people because when she was alive, she did programs about equality & accepting others for who and the way they are

If someone were to witness her killing a victim, she would tell them, "I'm sorry you had to see that," and give them a hug before disappearing with the victims body

I haven't figured out a name for this creepypasta yet, so if anyone can give me some ideas, that would be much appreciated. (I'll pick my favorite ones and make a poll, and I'll name my creepypasta the name that wins)

This isn't really based on the song (I couldn't get into it sorry) but you've been waiting so so long and my brain is kinda mush so here's headcanons on Wilf welcoming you back home after an adventure w Mark instead

Esp when you weren’t trained to be an actor

But you weren’t really an acting DA anymore after “the incident we don’t talk about”, so Mark dragging you along on make believe adventures was the best option

Sometimes you’d be gone for a week, other times you’d be gone for months

(One time you were gone for a whole year)

When you would be back was always relayed to the Egos, but sometimes Wilford knew before anybody else

They would get the message you’re returning tomorrow and Wilford has already been planning for a week off a “hunch”

He always makes sure your favorite food is prepared - everything from snacks to dessert

He sets up banners and streamers and large stereos, usually with help from the Jims

The moment you step into the door, you’re greeted with your favorite music, favorite food and drinks, and the man who planned it all pulling you into his arms in a bone-crushing hug

Wilf always calls you cute little nicknames too like “sugarplum”, “sweetheart”, etc etc

When you’re finally released from the hug, he always asks how the adventure was and gave you absolute free reign to rant about Actor to him

All the while he’s looking you up and down, making sure you’re not hurt or actually too tired to have a party

He doesn’t even know he does it, he’s brimming with too much energy to notice

You’re never hurt, thankfully (God knows what he would do to Actor if you were)

But if he sees you’re too tired for the party he set up, he slings an arm around your shoulders and in a snap you’re both upstairs in your room, already dressed in PJs

The food and drinks (or maybe a copy of them? You still weren’t sure) also managed to find their way spread along your desk

Wilf would act as a little servant, bringing you drinks and food (if you wanted any) and making sure you were totally comfortable

He always beelines right for the dessert, cursed with the world’s worst sweet tooth

And you’ll hang out, mindlessly talking about anything and everything you missed or experienced, sometimes sharing bites of each other’s food

Everybody else (who cared to take part in the celebration) could rock it up downstairs all the while you relaxed upstairs

If you weren’t too tired from your long excursion, Wilf would drag you along into the party

He’d reintroduce everyone like you were meeting them for the first time, but everyone would play along and welcome you back

You’d have to say hi to Dark later; he hates parties of any kind, and Wilford can only drag him into one so many times

Some of the egos would give you hugs, but if Wilford thought they were lingering too long, he’d drag you to the next person and glare at whoever the offender was (He’s jealous shh don’t tell him)

You could eat, drink, dance, whatever until the sun came up

But Wilford would always stick close by, prepared to carry you upstairs and tuck you in when the exhaustion finally hit

Because no matter how much he loves parties, he loves you more

It's true I don't talk about him much but I actually like valtteri a lot. so here's my bottas 🍑 thoughts

replacing a World Champion in 2016 is no easy feat, especially constantly being measured up against lewis. he came into Merc as a young(er than lewis -- in his mid twenties) driver in a championship winning car, obviously he was gonna have WC hopes, esp when Nico already achieved it. Look at Max, he wasn't even a WC but the best driver in his team and he ran through at least 3 teammates who couldn't measure up to him and their own dreams at becoming wc in the same car -- until they landed on Checo, who understands his role as second driver well and after a decade in f1 he's just grateful for the seat in the best car.

There's a reason HAM BOT VET/VER was a meme for Years and that speaks to Valtteri's consistency aa a driver. i think bc merc saw what happened with Nico and Lewis, they decided no more team fighting and we get the 'hi valtteri it's james' team orders here's a 3 minute compilation of it happening and you can hear James going 'I'm sorry' which is truly... you can't help but feel for it. But Valtteri was nothing but a team player and collected his second place in the WDC

There's also a lot of racers who don't have hobbies outside of racing, but Valtteri seems so much more rounded as a person? i love that he loves Proper coffee even tho lewis wouldn't touch it... his bucket hats, he goes hiking with his cycling gf, he even won!! a cycling event during summer break and he supports her in her hobbies/career. here's him being a wag. he also has the opposite vibes of lando norris, aka he looks like he knows how to eat pussy. just has the vibes of a good lay.

If anything, posting a tasteful ass nude and then giving it framed to lewis is iconic??? love the Scandinavian lack of shame, and that his DTS scenes are ass out him on a sauna. highly respect.

One underrated thing I really like his relationship with Zhou Guanyu. older experienced teammate - younger junior with everything to prove can always be tricky; you can get anywhere from raging competition to complete indifference but it really does seem like ZG likes him, looks at him like a mentor and that's sick <3

I def agree with some points you have made. When the same trope is overused again, it's not necessarily a trope. It becomes boring to read, you know the expectations and because some of the things are catered to that same audience, there are seldom changes.

Most often, it's a hero and villain in love together, but can't be together. They have sexual tension, do x or y, and they get together or something. That's not ALWAYS the case, but most often it's the same repetitive thing. And yes, sometimes I do find it fun. It's fun to read what you know, and enjoy the writing nonetheless.

But as writers, at least from my POV, I always want to provide a different feeling to what i write. If i do smth related to comedy & slice of life, I want others to enjoy that moment of life w hero or villain, or otherwise, if it's smth angst, I want readers to be in anguish w the characters. That's really difficult to achieve though, if your writing blends amongst others sometimes. It creates a monotony of catering for the same audience, and sometimes makes it difficult for the writer to branch out.

This is of course, my view of things, and what I've experienced. I haven't written in well over a few months up until the secret Santa bc I feel stuck in the same loop of wanting to cater to an audience but wanting to write my own thing. It's def easier said than done imo. Like I said, it's rest difficult to branch out, esp if you have a small community of like 4 people total reading everything you've got. If I want to create my own work, I feel as though no one else may be interested. As much as I write for myself, I also wrote for other people to enjoy my work. And it's really disheartening to see that people are more interested in what they could find elsewhere that others may replicate at ease, whilst all the other thoughts of more detailed and in depth and long term writing may wither.

Sorry for the ramble. That's honestly been in my mind for a long time, and sorry to dump it on your page :p i suppose I never quite found the correct words for it. However, I do respect your choice for leaving if you do. I'll miss your writing, they were truly a gemstone. I hope we can still keep in touch if you decide to leave <3

So far, I think all the ships I've looked at and been like "that's not really my thing" have solidly stayed that way. Ships that I've grown to like a LOT more are applejuice and azurido after book 5 and book 6 events 🙏 I still Enjoyed those ships before but it is A Lot More now 😌
