Quarantine, Day 154
August 12
LOL my computer won't show me my pin login screen unless I press the soft boot keys first, that's not a bad sign, is it?
Anyway, another day of entirely kittens! Three hour feeds means breakfast starts at 6am, bright and early! Second breakfast rolls out around 9, just in time for a nice lunch at noon. Second lunch is at 3pm, followed by early bird dinner at six. Fashionably late dinner (attended by all the same diners, of course) is at 9pm, then we all have a midnight snack that is in fact a full meal. A 3am top-up finishes the day's menu, and everybody gets one more nap before breakfast. Whew! In the middle of this, the weanlings also get fed on their own, slightly less rigid schedule consisting of "We have finished the food, human! What the hell are you playing at?"
The good news is that eight daily feedings are paying off in terms of baby weight gain. All of the teenies are up by at least 20g over yesterday, which is an excellent daily gain equivalent to the weight of about four US quarters. Given that they were very underweight to start with, rapid gain and good suckling are very encouraging signs. Orphan kittens always have a tough row to hoe and things could go wrong, but it's a great start. They also have names nowI I ran the two sets of names by the coordinator and she okayed the Harper Hall set, woo-hoo! Without further ado (or photo editing to make these pics smaller because I am exhausted), meet the Harpers!
First off is Menolly, of course. She is white and black with a mostly white body and a white blaze on her face (her first given name for my notebook was "Stripe"). Menolly is the smallest of the kittens by just a few grams and earned her name by being the loudest and most energetic yeller by an order of magnitude. She always gets fed first, because she is apparently always STARVING. Menolly was also the first kitten to escape her bin; I found her snuggled up next to Audiva this morning and had to put binder clips on the towel cover.
Next is Audiva, the other female, and much less obvious of a naming choice. If she'd been bigger or louder she might have been Silvinia, but she's pretty laid back and mostly enjoys snuggling in with her stuffed puppy fake mama and sleeping on her back. (She was "Dot" to start with, because she has one black spot on her back and the white stripe on her face wraps around her ear to make the black spot a round dot.)
Sebell has facial markings that are not dissimilar from Menolly's, but where her body is mostly white, his is tuxie black. (He was "Blaze" to start with becausse of the white blaze up his face and chest.) Sebell just about gave me a goddamned heart attack this afternoon by not only slipping out of his bin but leaving the bins entirely and going a few feet away to a place where I could easily have stepped on him. I like to think I would've noticed him before I did, but luckily the kiddo was with me and quickly pointed out the wanderer. Yikes! There is such a thing as living up too much to your name, journeyman.
The final kitten is Robinton, the biggest and most distinguished of the kittens thanks to his handsome white mustache! (He was "Stashy" in the book for obvious reasons.) Robinton is possibly the most businesslike kitten I have ever encountered. When I pick him up he pees and usually poos as well, lets himself be wiped up, then latches onto the bottle like it's going out of style. He's gained 30g already and has a handsome portly tummy to go with his handsome face.
The little kittens did well today, but Zuko lost some weight and I'm not sure why. I'm hoping the tick we pulled off him isn't making him sick a few days later. I penned him up with some food to make sure he'd get enough, but all he did was cry, so I pulled him out, snuggled him, and then syringe fed him meat mush through a luer lock with no tip in it. It was messy work, but he ate some! I'm going to keep on keeping an eye on him, but he's certainly been very active. The others are all gaining well and eating well. The kiddo has been spending a lot of time taking Aang into his room and playing with him whenever I say he can. It's probably just as well if these kittens depart this weekend; we cannot get another cat if we want to keep fostering and I don't want him to get his little heart broken when it's time to say goodbye.
In non-heartbreaking news, I proved my Minecraft chops and general motherly acumen today when I fixed the kiddo's bugged game by successfully typing /gamemode creative into the text window in the very few seconds between respawn and death after the kiddo accidentally redrew the borders of the world to exclude the place where he was. He'd been getting a little wound up worrying about it but all's well that ends well, and I showed him how to back up his game to prevent future disasters from being ruinous. It's funny because I remember back when he was maybe two or three years old and my motion sickness wasn't so acute, he'd like to sit on the arm of my recliner and watch me play Minecraft. It was fun, but it added difficulty because he unconditionally refused to let me kill the cute animals for food or materials. Suffice it to say he has gotten over that qualm and is now a first rate hunter and farmer.
The only other real thing of note today was our trip to the thrift store. The thrift store was closed for many months during the pandemic, and we've only been back a couple times since they opened despite it being one of my favorite places. Today's trip was ostensibly for the purpose of acquiring suitable fake mama animals for when the teenies inevitably pee or poop on the ones they have, but we found many other goodies as well. They put all their pet, garden and summer stuff on half price sale, so I got a Topsy Turvy planter for a buck, a couple of blue ice cooler packs for less than a dollar each, and a really startlingly nice crate-style cage for small animals for just three dollars. I am betting it was probably 40 at the store and it looked new, so I'm very pleased. We're always looking for crates for transfering kittens or friendly ferals without taking up our scarce box traps! I also got six or seven appropriately sized stuffed animals for the non-hypothetical kittens.
The kiddo got into a bin of 50 cent electronics toys with no batteries, sold take-your-chances style, and got a little ray gun, two Perry the Platypus walkie-talkies, and a bluetooth speaker. Everything but the gun worked, so it was a heck of a good deal even though he did wind up getting his finger stuck in the ray gun while disassembling it and needing a good spritz of cooking spray to release him. My best find was probably the nonstick Pampered Chef two-handled skillet in great shape for five bucks. I couldn't find the exact pan online because it's probably older, but I don't think PC sells any pans for less than like 100 bucks, so I was quite pleased. It's a great size for omelettes, stir fry, eggs, whatever. Every time I move, I have to go through and get rid of most of my pans, and every time I settle down again, I rebuild my collection. It's the circle of life!

The Regular From Hell
My trainee had her final training shift with me today. I found out from the night manager that she specifically asked to be paired with me for her final day.
This pleases me.
What did not please me, however, was our [see: my] final table of the night.
I was letting her take the smaller tables and having her do everything with them. I was there for questions and to do the shit work like clearing and resetting tables in the section. A woman and seven kids got sat and got their food, and then one of the biggest douchebags I’ve ever had the displeasure of being forced to deal with was sat.
Apparently this schmuck is a regular, and he’s rude and hateful. His ass is so repulsive he won’t even touch himself. This alpaca-looking motherfucker is in my section (alone, of course) so I send the trainee to handle him. I had no idea who he was.
He’s a prick to her from the onset, but she says nothing to me about it. She gets his drink and apparently he tells her that he’s putting five singles on the table and every mistake she makes he’s taking one away. When she lets me know I tell her to inform him that he can keep his five bucks but she’ll try to give him good service anyway.
In case anybody wonders, I was more than happy to take 100% responsibility for that, so if anybody was getting in trouble it’d be me.
Meanwhile, while we’re waiting on the food in the kitchen, he starts giving hell to the table with 7 kids to keep it down because nobody wants to hear them - which as a general rule I agree with. For clarity - because my writing sucks - I suppose I should tell you this group just came back from a T-ball game or something and they must’ve lost to end up at my restaurant so they’d be motivated to do better next time. As far as a group of 5-6 year old kids go, they were decent enough and weren’t loud by any reasonable standard - he was just unfortunate enough to be seated next to them in a mostly empty restaurant..
The woman says something to me and instead of getting a manager I ask this guy to not harass other tables - they have just as much right to be there as him.
I get an eye roll which tells me he understands the subject material and I consider the issue closed once he declines moving to another table. The table with kids finishes and leaves, and I start the cleaning process.
I’m sweeping under the table when his food comes out. My trainee apparently left one of his sides in the window and tells him she’ll be right back with it. This is the easiest of mistakes to correct so when she lets him know she’ll be right back with it I expect things to be A-OK.
I’m not a clever man.
He makes a big show about taking one of the singles (which goes to me anyway) and lets her know that’s a dollar off of the tip. She tells him what I told her to and apparently it��s the first time anybody has ever said anything of that sort to him.
He wads up all five of the bills and tosses it on the floor - in her general direction - and smugly looks at her and says “pick it up.”
I walk over and tell her to go to the kitchen, I’ll handle it. I sweep up the five dollars, and then deposit the contents of my dustpan on the table and his dinner and told him to get the hell out of my restaurant. He stood up and started shouting at me, but I don’t speak worthless cocksucker so I didn’t listen to a word of it.
The night manager came shooting out of the kitchen like a missile and calmed shit down pretty quickly.
I’m apparently supposed to be leashed, according to alpaca-boy. The night manager asked me what happened and I told her - and got sent home. Basically my job hinges on whether or not he calls corporate. I don’t give a shit. Right now I could not possibly care less if I get fired or not because if I do it would be worth it.
It’s only after my shift that I find out this ass clown is a regular and does stuff like that all the time. The experienced servers walk away from him after dropping his food off, and they give him his check at the same time. NOBODY COULD TELL ME THIS?
My poor trainee. I really hope she doesn’t quit because of this asshat.

sharks are worth an enormous amount of money, and mostly for their fins where a single pound of fin is worth over $200 so fisherman around the world in poor countries pull up sharks and CUT OFF ITS FINS, THROW THE REST OF THE BODY BACK, dry the fin. you don’t need refrigeration systems on your boat so even the most decrepit boats can go out there and make enormous amounts of money. SHARKS ARE BEING KILLED EVERYWHERE.
costa rica is a good country but unfortunately there’s very bad layers in it. the problem is a big local company owned by a costa rican millionaire owns two boats and bring in FIVE TONS OF SHARK FINS EVERY WEEK. they unload at night because no authorities are working then and dry the fins to sell to singapore or taiwan. he has helicopters, apartments, hotels, all thanks to shark fins.
in bahamas, one of the most amazing sharks in the world, the oceanic whitetip shark goes there only on May, was once of the most abundant large predator on the planet, they were everywhere but because they have massive fins that are highly valued in the fin industry their POPULATION HAVE DROPPED 99% in the atlantic and caribbean
in miami, there are shark hunting businesses, some of them does not believe in endangered sharks and think of them as just propaganda, for them there’s plenty of sharks to catch every trip, and believed that sharks are just animals on earth that are meant for people to eat

the killing of sharks is one if the biggest concerns that we should have on the planet ecologically today. we depend on ecosystems for survival. we depend on other species. they’re part and parcel of ourselves, of out daily lives. removing sharks is removing part of the framework that allows life to exist on land. it’s the animal that sits on top of 70% of the oxygen in the air that we breathe from phytoplankton in the oceans. if you remove one species, the consequences ripple through entire ecosystems. and right now, we’re removing the most important predator the planet has. and the consequences are going to not affect oceanic ecosystems, they’re going to affect our ecosystems and ourselves.
we’re now killing up to 150 million sharks a year, and it’s not just shark fin soup anymore. sharks are now being killed and renamed and fed to us, so we don’t know we’re eating shark. there’s a massive scandal representing tens of millions of sharks every year. eating sharks is a bad idea. we’re eating endangered super predators. we’re eating animals that can take 40 years to reach sexual maturity. they can have very few young. most of the pollution we’ve ever made as a species has gone into the environment untreated. and that accumulates in living animal matter and concentrates as you go up the food chain. by the time you get to sharks, they’re enormously toxic. with things like lead, and mercury and even neurotoxins. so it’s important that we keep sharks out of our food. and it’s recommended, women and children, don’t eat them at all. it’s really important to bring this message to the public.
in panama, shark fins are just $5 and in china it’s 200 bucks. a pound of the little sharks are also 50 cents. they even kill baby hammerheads. there are confiscations, fins are kept in custody at the coast and ocean department of the environment ministry.
rob: we’re here in a parking lot in panama city, with hundreds of dollars of shark fins confiscated from people that were trying to check these into airlines and fly them to asia. a seizure of 800 pounds of shark fins in panama representing $300,000 in shark fins many of which are illegal and on the endangered species list including the scalloped hammerhead shark, our favorite species. there’s 38,868 fins confiscated. we’ve seen many different shark species of many different sizes. among these, probably the largest hammerhead fins, to the newborns, to lighter ones. they seem to really get a little bit depressed when they see these little small shark fins from hammerhead newborns, plus 1, plus 2 years, which are the sharks that hang around the nursery areas. it’s disappointing to see the large amount of baby hammerheads that they’re using for the shark fin trade because they’re destroying the whole population. it’s sad. and it’s just the tip of the iceberg. panama is one of the important places where the big mommas come to give birth. it’s an important nursery area. it’s part of the heritage that panama has so it’s important to protect them.
when we started making sharkwater, there were four countries that have banned shark finning. when we were finished, there were 16 countries. now there’s more than 90 countries around the world that have banned the process of finning but none of them have banned the importation of fins which means you can fin as many sharks as you want as long as you put the fins on a shipping boat before you bring them into port, not a fishing boat, which is a massive loophole.
in africa, there are reefer containers full of frozen shark. you can actually see a fin just laying on the wharf and some blue shark tags stating that blue sharks that were landed there were caught in spain. so apparently they’re not really trying to hide it.

Crate Digging at Cheapo Discs, Minneapolis, MN

After a long night of excess, resulting in the need for triple of my daily allotment of coffee in the morning, my only desire was to hit up the local record stores in Minneapolis. After all, it's not often I get to go crate digging in the Twin Cities. Besides, finding records is therapeutic, it's my detoxifier of choice, because for whatever reason hang overs are slowly quelled as you flip through records.
Like David Arnold, crate digging always leaves you "feeling mighty fine!"
On this trip I figured it was best to hit up Cheapo Records, I'd dug there before, and looking at the few remaining balled up bills in my same-as-last-night jeans, it seemed like a place called "Cheapo" was the sensible choice to dig for wax.
I plugged Cheapo in to Google Maps, and after a short trip it sent me to their old store. Cheapo, if you are reading this, please tell Google wassup on maps!
The detour was no big deal though, they put their new address in the window of their old address, so I could see they were now located at 2600 Nicolette St, just a short distance from their old store, now fairly close to one of their competitors, Electric Fetus which I reviewed a few years earlier.
Walking thru the door I could see they had just moved in recently, but it was nice and clean and basically mostly setup as it was clear the main sections were now well organized.
I started with the rock section as it had the biggest footprint in the store. Plus, it seems like the more I learn about rock, the more I realize I'll always have some voids in my own rock section that need filling.
No one ever circle jerks the Circle Jerks and that's a damn shame.
I should have bought that Circle Jerks album, it was a fair price for an original pressing of this classic punk album, but I had to be extra picky with my money today, so I reluctantly passed this by looking for my must-haves at true cheap-o prices.
I figured maybe buying a few good 7" records would be easy on the wallet, so I asked one of the store clerks where the 7" section was.
"We don't have a 7" section set up yet, sorry we're still moving stuff around. If you dig thru the various 12" records you'll find a few in each section but we don't have a 7" section right now."
I was disappointed, but I get it, moving all those records must have been a back breaking feat. Now putting the pieces back together again while still staying in business is a task that will take weeks. Hopefully the next time I pop in they will have 7 inch records section all set up.
So I asked them if they had a regional music set up and the store clerk said "Yep, sure do." and without hesitation he was kind enough to stop what he was working on to lead me to their nice big section of Twin Cities based regional records.
"When in Rome, right?"
"Definitely!" he replied with a smile.

Nice! The Hypstrz, this one I had to buy. I found out about these guys from a regional rock compilation on Twin Tone called "Big Hits of Mid America Volume 3". This is exactly why I buy regional rock comps, so I can learn about what bands speak to me the most from whatever city or location I happen to be in.

I went ahead and picked this up as well. It's the reasonably priced reissue on Matador from 2015. After a quick Discogs search, I could see no one bitched about the quality of this repress yet, and everyone else had it priced a bit higher.
This is one of those albums that when you tell people you liked their newer stuff, they tell you...
"Well you gotta have this one!" "You can't TRULY appreciate Yo La Tengo unless you have yada yada..."
Well I got it now, and I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for the original, so I don't have to hear that again. It's a good album BTW, maybe not my favorite of theirs but I'm glad I took the advice nonetheless.

I've always wanted one of these test records for putting my home studio's amp and speakers through the fine tooth comb, but today wasn't the day to try to justify buying a record I'd use only once and maybe sample several times for the "oddity" factor it had. Besides I saw on Discogs 1 seller in the US had it for $5, and Cheapo had it for $20, so if I really needed it I would just pay for shipping, still pay a lot less, and wait a bit longer for something that basically wasn't essential.
Saving the best for last, it was time to hit up their Hip Hop Section...
Rodney O & Joe Cooley – Me And Joe LP
I pawed at this essential Egyptian Empire release a few times before putting it back reluctantly. File under: Yet another Hip Hop classic LP that I still don't have on vinyl. It was in great shape, the price was not horrible, but not low enough to make me jump on it.
In a nutshell, that's my overall take on Cheapos... Their prices really aren't that cheap, but compared to Discogs pricing along with whatever shipping you would have to pay to get it to your door, they are fair and their selection is solid. So don't expect to walk in the door and dump 100 bucks on a thousand dollars worth of records.
These guys know what they are doing, they know what sells for what, and they often price right in that comfort zone where they aren't making a killing on each sale, but they are moving enough records to keep the doors open for many more years to come. Yes, if you spend a few hours in the store meticulously digging through their shelves, you will find some legitimately cheap and good records, but for the most part, I think it's safe to say their prices are basically "up to par." I don't think you should really shop at Cheapos to get cheap records, you should shop there for the huge selection so you can buy good records at a fair price.
Eventually it was time to hit the long road home. As I stood at the counter to pay for my tiny haul, the last remaining sales staff in the store was on the phone. She didn't look like she wanted to be on the phone, on the contrary she appeared to be in pain.
Apparently someone in the store earlier didn't like the look she gave her, or how she stated one of her sentences, so she was getting an absolute earful from this irate customer. The UPS guy showed up with a delivery and waited along with me for his signature for delivery as she carefully listened to the grievances being shouted at her on the phone. She had to hold the ear piece away from her ear a few times and I could hear from my vantage point that the woman on the phone was not done giving her as much hell as she could possibly dish out.
I sympathized with her as I watched her take it in stride, doing her best to fix the situation, so I waited while the UPS guy couldn't wait a minute longer. Mind you, I was in metered parking so I was getting anxious waiting myself, but I patiently waited until the customer hung up on her a third time.
After all that she looked at me and smiled and said...
"I'm sorry for making you wait, that customer really needed my attention and I couldn't just tell her to hold on while I checked you out."
"Don't worry about it, I understand completely!" I told her.
"For being patient with me I'll give you this 7" for free." she added.
I was grateful for the freebie, and genuinely impressed with how that situation was handled. Honestly, I have to give them props for being good people and running a good operation. That situation she dealt with is a part of business sometimes, and I get that you can't please all the people all the time. Yet long ago, and again today, they won me over, so I'll definitely be back to dig again in their shelves in the future.
TLDR: if you ever find yourself in Downtown Minneapolis, longing for a few hours to kill to do a little therapeutic crate digging, hit up Cheapo records and you'll find a few great records to add to your collection.

Why It Pays to “Discover” Online Banking
For the longest time, banking to me seemed like mostly a practice in making the best of a bad situation. After all, how many people actively discuss what they enjoy about their bank? Instead, it’s mostly complaints about rising fees and buggy apps. Because of this and since I didn’t have any big issues with Wells Fargo and wasn’t paying any maintenance fees for my decades-old account, I assumed I couldn’t really ask for more.
That was until I turned my sights to internet banking. Suddenly I learned that I could be actually earning on my savings while still avoiding fees. Since then, I’ve actually opened a few online bank accounts — but my first and most-used of these accounts comes from Discover Bank. So let’s dive into what advantages online institutions offer as well as what I like about Discover Bank specifically.
What Online-Only Banks Have to Offer
The way I’ve utilized my checking account over the past few years isn’t exactly normal or smart. Aside from receiving my direct deposit and being used to pay rent, it basically acts a slush fund for my wife and me that just sits there until we need it. That’s not a terrible idea but, then again, it doesn’t earn us anything either. That’s why I decided it would be better to open a real savings account that would at least get us some interest.
Brick and Mortar Rates
Way back when the notion that I should be setting up a real savings account occurred to me, my first thought was to just open a new savings account with Wells Fargo or perhaps a local bank in my area. However I was shocked to learn that unless you have some serious bucks — we’re talking five figures here — you would only get a .01% interest rate on your account. Really?
I knew savings account rates were low but I didn’t know they were that low. Luckily internet banks offer much better rates.
Internet Bank Rates
At the time that I was first looking at online banking options, savings account interest rates were already 100 times better than most big institutions, with APYs north of 1%. As great as that sounds, these days those figures have more than doubled. In the case of my Discover Bank savings account, my current APY is 2.10% while other popular options such as Synchrony are up to 2.25%.
Why I Went with Discover
Considering that the goal was to earn as much interest as possible, you may be wondering why I didn’t go with Synchrony, which tends to offer slightly higher rates than Discover. Truth be told, my main reason was that I already had a Discover It credit card and have been pretty impressed with my experience. I figured that having my credit card and other bank accounts under one roof made things easier and I seem to have been right about that. In fact, since the time that I first joined Discover Bank, they’ve upgraded their system so that you can access both credit and banking products with a single login where you previously needed separate usernames and passwords.
The Benefits and Drawbacks of Internet Banks
First a big plus: unlike many too-big-to-fail banks, Discover Bank and many of their ilk don’t charge a maintenance fee or mandate a minimum daily balance. Moreover various online institutions have different policies regarding overdraft fees, with some waiving such penalties in all situations and others like Discover reimbursing your first fine each year. Plus, just like regular bank accounts, online bank accounts are FDIC insured (or at least they should be — make sure to do your due diligence on an institution before joining).
As for the downsides, there’s no question that some will be concerned about the lack of a physical branch to go to. Personally, I rely so much on banking apps that I hardly remember the last time I visited a brick and mortar location. That said, the inability to deposit cash or a check in an ATM does mean that it can take longer to get your money into your account. In the case of cash, you may even have to rely on your “big bank” account to deposit the cash before transferring to your online account. Such delays mean you’ll need to think ahead if you’re actively using these accounts to pay bills — but hopefully you’ll be able to work out the kinks with some practice.
My Experience With Discover Bank
It’s now been a couple of years since I joined Discover Bank and, overall, it’s been a great experience. As I mentioned, during this time, my APY has continued to rise, so that’s a definite plus. However I’ve also noticed a few changes to my accounts over time that have been both good and, well, less than great. Let’s take a closer look at not only my Discover Bank savings account but also my checking account.
Cash Back Checking Exists
Funny enough, when I first joined Discover, I didn’t just open a savings account — I actually opened a checking account as well. That’s because Discover Bank offers cash back checking, which I thought would be a nice addition to my banking line-up. At the time the deal was that users would earn $.10 back for each debit transaction, check written, and more. I managed to maximize these dime bonuses by only using my debit card for transactions that were under a $1 and then transferring my acquired earnings to my Discover It card’s cash back stockpile.
Unfortunately Discover has since changed the structure of their cash back checking program, now offering 1% back on all debit card purchases. Admittedly this doesn’t do much for me as my Discover It card offers the same and other credit cards I have do even better. That said, this is probably the better program overall and could be perfect for those who either cannot qualify for a rewards credit cards or wouldn’t trust themselves with one.
Despite the structural change, as time has gone on, my Discover Bank has practically become my primary checking account. In fact it’s where I write my rent checks from. To that point, a few months ago, I also got to see how Discover’s “First Fee Forgiveness” program works as a mixup with my landlord resulted in an overdraft fee (that’s when I learned that postdated checks aren’t a thing). Although a $30 fee did briefly post to my account, a $30 credit was quickly issued since this was my first — and hopefully last — infraction. This was such a relief and made what turned out to be a frustrating situation at least a little bit better. Plus I can only imagine how much such a mistake would have cost me had it happened at a regular bank without such generous policies.
No Branch? No Problem
To be honest, the initial reason I decided to sign up for the checking account was because Discover debit cards offer access to (apparently) more than 60,000 ATMs without a fee. Since there’s not a Wells Fargo within a few hundred miles of my home I thought it would be wise for me to have a backup plan. Sure this whole plan only saves me a couple of dollars per withdrawal but everything adds up.
Like many banks, Discover’s app also allows you to deposit checks into your savings or checking account just by taking a photo of it. You can also sign up for various bill pay options, although I have yet to explore those despite the length of time I’ve had my accounts (so I really can’t speak to how that works.) Lastly, you can easily transfer money between your external and internal accounts using the app or website, so there’s really is no need for a branch.
Other Advantages
A lot of what I liked about the Discover It card’s app also applies to the Discover Bank account. First the bank’s widget looks great in the iOS Today Screen and gives me at-a-glance updates on my balances. Additionally one of the upgrades that came to Discover’s debit cards when they added chips is that they are now supported in Apple Pay. As I mentioned, Discover Bank has also integrated with Discover credit cards, allowing you to see all of your accounts in the same place.
A Few Initial Issues
While I’m pretty satisfied with my account experience overall, there were a couple of problems I had when setting up my accounts forever ago. First, when signing up on the website, I was shown my account numbers and then presented with the option to register my accounts for online access. There was just one problem: clicking the button took me away from the page with my account numbers and there was no way back to them.
I assumed this wouldn’t be a big deal as surely they must have sent me an email confirmation, right? Sadly, no — aside from that initial confirmation page I had no other way of knowing if my accounts were actually even opened until several hours later when I was notified that my funding transfers had gone through. This should have been relieving but, since none of these emails contained my full account numbers, I was now sending money to accounts I couldn’t access. To be fair, I could have called their helpline to retrieve the info I needed, but I instead opted just to wait until my paperwork arrived in the mail.
Obviously this wasn’t exactly a deal breaker but I could see others being much more frustrated by such a situation than I was. I can also see some being upset that, in order to transfer between an external account and your Discover Bank account on the app, you must first add the external account information on the website. Again, not a huge deal but it is a little less elegant than you might want.
With all that said, this was several years ago now and was prior to a round of upgrades on Discover’s part. Therefore I can only hope that whatever issues plagued me so many months ago have now been resolved. Considering I haven’t run into any issues since, I’m thinking they just might be.
Final Thoughts on Discover Bank
There’s no doubt about it: bringing my savings to internet banking accounts was among the smartest money moves I’ve made. No longer am I letting my cash just sit in a checking account doing nothing. Instead I’m earning interest, which has also encouraged to save even more.
Beyond the increase in APY, on the whole, I’d say Discover Bank has improved even since my initially positive review. The merging of credit and banking accounts, sleeker debit card, and Apple Pay support have all been welcomed additions — even if my little $.10 trick no longer works. Furthermore, having found myself fallible and accidentally bouncing a check, it was great to see the bank’s First Fee Forgiveness save the day.
For all of those reasons, even though I now have other online bank accounts including Aspiration, my Discover Bank accounts are still my most used. With a current savings APY of 2.10%, I’ve found this to be the perfect place to house my emergency fund and other extra cash. So, if you’re looking for a better bank account to supplement what you currently have or want to get away from the big banks, I’d definitely recommend looking into what Discover Bank has to offer.

I know obviously insurance for the young is gonna get rocket high anyway compared to older people for the same old 'statistical' reasons as always although I don't intentionally drive like an idiot or least intend never to and I do take safety as a big priority and everything, I've passed my test just over 2 years ago with a clean license but still find insurance even for my micra (1 litre 1994 M Reg) costing me a minimum average of 1000 annually, and just below a grand like 900-950ish is roughly the best I've got for my micra from directline but wondering if anyone would know anyone better cost wise? I've discussed getting a mustang to my family and friends for quite a while now. I know the downsides, high insurance, bad gas mileage, and too much power(according to my parents). I'm a big fan of the foxbody('79-'93) mustangs and I also really want a V8 and I also want stick if that matters. The way I see it, I'm going to pay a lot for insurance no matter what, so why not pay a little bit more and pay for the car I really want. In 2005, as part of our divorce agreement, my ex and I decided to keep the same auto insurance but under separate policies. We had been with this company for years. My policy was on auto pay meaning that the payments were taken directly from my account. He walked in to pay his. About 6 months after the divorce, I was pulled over for a routine traffic stop and was told I was driving an uninsured vehicle. Without insurance, my registration was also invalid. Both tickets totaled 1K. My car was taken into impound. I checked and found the officer was correct. On good terms with my ex, I told him what happened. He said for the past 6 months, each time he went in to make a payment, the girl HIS was already paid. Realizing what had happened. They were applying my payments to his automobile. I was furious. I notified the agent who initially did not want to accept blame, but since the payments were automatic and my account number was on each payment they took, they were responsible. The error was compounded by the fact that the cancellation notice went to HIS address (how dumb was that!) So I had no way of knowing that I was cancelled. I was without a car for 2 weeks and lost my job. After much haggling and many sleepless nights of wondering what to do without a job or a car, the insurance company finally admitted blame, paid the impound fees of $1,250.00. The agent also said they would handle the 2 tickets totaling 1K. FAST FORWARD TO 2010 in my state, the county did a scofflaw sweep and I was summoned to court with over 5 thousand other delinquent drivers to address unpaid tickets. The order was come to court by April 30th or be arrested. Realizing this had to be a mistake, but fearful of the law, I stood in line for over 5 hours in blazing heat, then sat in court another 5 hours waiting for my day in court. I was immediately threatened with arrest because the 2 tickets were not paid. Up to that moment, I had no idea the insurance company had not paid the 2 tickets. This time, not only was my insurance and registration cancelled, my license was suspended due to the age of the infraction (5 years). In front of the judge, I called the agents' office only to be told by the secretary that they had no intention to pay the ticket. Paying to get the car out of impound was enough. When the judge heard this she was shocked and let me off with a promise to pay in 5 days. She made me promise not to drive. With no way to get home but drive, I took a chance, and was pulled over. The officer informed me that due to the vast number of outstanding cases, tags bearing our county name would be targeted for a while (talk about a police state!). I showed him my documents from the court and headed home. This is a nightmare. Would I have a case if I filed suit against my insurance company for failing in their fiduciary responsibility to a 16 year client in good standing? By the way this company is one of the largest in the country.""

Let me share a tiny case with you to offer you an idea. In case you started spending a thousand bucks each and every day around the day that Jesus Christ was created and you kept on spending a thousand bucks every day as then, you still wouldn’t have spent a trillion bucks by now.
The borrower is the servant of the lender, and I would say that we are currently enslaving ourselves, but that is not exactly accurate because we do not really have any intention of ever paying some of the debt back. We aim to just keep moving to more debt for a long time to come.
Regrettably, it’ll be our children and our grandchildren which might need to deal with all of this debt when our nation stays that long. Thomas Jefferson was completely accurate when he described government debt for a means for a single generation to steal money from the other, and because the afternoon that Barack Obama initially entered the White House, the federal government was stealing more than 100 million bucks an hour out of our children and our grandchildren each and every hour of each and every moment.
Just think about that for a moment.
That would make headlines all over the planet, if some thieves may eliminate stealing 100 million bucks from somebody.
However, that is what we are doing to future generations of Americans each and every hour of daily.
I have said it earlier, and I will say it again. What we are doing to our children and our grandchildren is outside criminal, and in a just society those that are accountable for getting us into so much debt will be likely to jail.
Whenever you are in the midst of a debt binge, it can look like there will be no consequences, but the truth is that a day of reckoning arrives eventually.
Among the reasons why I get so fired up about the national debt is since it could literally ruin the bright future that our descendants were assumed to have.
When you look back over the long term, the ordinary interest rate on U.S. government debt has been somewhere about 6 per cent.
It’s inevitable that interest rates will soon go back toward the average eventually, although of course at the moment we are nowhere near that amount.
Let’s imagine that the rate of interest gained back to only 5 per cent. We’d be paying about a trillion dollars per year just in interest on the debt if that happened and we would be confronting national bankruptcy.
At there the Federal Reserve would likely begin printing money of course, and we would turn into Zimbabwe or even another Venezuela.
However, if it’s so dangerous for governments to enter so much debt, just why would they do it?
Well, for something most politicians do not really care about long-term considerations. Instead, they really need the government to invest a great deal of money from the short term, since government spending consistently gives a boost to short-term financial activity.
And if the economy is “doing well” in the short term, it’s more likely that the voters will be in a fantastic mood when voting time arrives.
That is something which Barack Obama understood. He inherited a economic wreck, and so he went to the government debt binge in history. As I explained in a previous article, when we had not spent and borrowed 9.3 trillion dollars at that time that Obama had been in the White House, then we would be in the worst economic depression in our history right at this moment.
By going into debt, of course, our long-term issues have been magnified.
It had been estimated that with the Republicans in charge of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives that a feeling of financial responsibility would return to Washington, but that clearly has not happened. So now the stage is set to the sort of financial meltdown that I have been warning about for a lengthy time.
At the same time the Republicans would at least give lip service to trying to restrain the debt, but now they also seem to have become sure that our exploding national debt doesn’t really matter.
They are vastly outnumbered, although there are a small number of Senators which are still maintaining the struggle and a few dozen members of the home.
Although we were the most wealthy and most prosperous country on the entire planet, that was not enough for us.
We always had to have more, and so we have gathered the greatest mountain of debt from the history of the world.
There will be serious consequences for what we have performed, however, the warnings have been ignored, and so now all that’s left is to allow us to reap what we have sown.
