D.E.B.S. at 20: a Queer Cult Classic

There is a secret film hidden within the shadowy sapphic corners of Letterboxd. Some call it escapist trash, some call it an underrated cult classic, fools call it a male fantasy. It calls itself D.E.B.S. As other early-2000s chick flicks like Charlie’s Angels and St. Trinian’s have been reevaluated and embraced for their candy-floss aesthetics and campy wit over the years, the lesbian community was quietly reclaiming its own equivalent with 2004’s D.E.B.S.
The precursor to contemporary high-concept lesbian films like Bottoms, the spy flick is filled with something that queer female moviegoers still often yearn for: fun. That includes Jordana Brewster and her era-defying eyebrows as the impeccably named supervillain Lucy Diamond, John Woo–style fight scenes that parody the action genre in the same way as Charlie’s Angels, and a cheerfully cheap aesthetic where spies run around in plaid schoolgirl skirts.
D.E.B.S. was written, directed, and edited by filmmaker Angela Robinson. While “unapologetically queer” might be an overused phrase, it does apply neatly to Robinson. The Chicago-born director’s first project was a short film called Chickula: Teenage Vampire, calling on the long history of vampiric queer women that began with 1872’s Carmilla.
Her love of playing with genre led her to later put a lesbian spin on the movie musical by writing the underappreciated Girltrash: All Night Long and exploring polyamory in a period biopic about the creators of Wonder Woman, Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. On the small screen, she also burnished her lesbian credentials by working on several episodes of The L Word.
When D.E.B.S. started life as a short film, Robinson described it as “a story about a trio of superspies who are all chicks. I love all the comic-book characters: Charlie’s Angels, Batman, Josie & the Pussycats … But I always wanted them to be gay and they never were, so I wrote my own.” Success at Sundance led to Sony snatching the short up and deciding that D.E.B.S. should be a full-length feature.
Two decades later, the joy of this movie lies in the details. The tone is immediately set by a gravelly voice-over telling us that there is a secret test hidden within the SAT to recruit young female superspies (and establishing that, like Bottoms, this is a film aware of genre archetypes and willing to push believability). Our main character Amy (Sara Foster) is an academic overachiever — like many lesbians overcompensating for their perceived failure to live up to social norms. Her perfect score on the secret SAT test makes it even more scandalous when she falls for the aforementioned supervillain Lucy Diamond.
Queer friend groups may delight over the nostalgic frosty eye shadow and lip gloss worn by the D.E.B.S. (which stands for “discipline, energy, beauty, strength,” naturally) at all times. Flip phones, CGI holographic screens, and Goldfrapp’s appearance on the soundtrack will also remind you that you’re watching a film made in the early 2000s. And many will squeal when they spot Holland Taylor, over a decade before she came out, as the academy’s head.
Admittedly, the special effects are goofy enough to cross over into comedy, especially when our girls are abseiling into a restaurant or climbing walls with plungers, and the lighting could be charitably described as resembling teen soap operas of that era. But the chemistry between Amy and Lucy is crackling enough that YouTube compilations of their scenes have racked up hundreds of thousands of views online. Their fun enemies-to-lovers plotline begins with the pair pointing guns at each other and quickly progresses to a whirlwind romance (the other D.E.B.S. think Amy’s been kidnapped and launch a national manhunt, just as many friend groups have had to organize rescue missions for lesbians on weeklong first dates).
You could argue that espionage serves as a metaphor for the closet and that Amy is such an effective spy because she’s used to lying to herself about her sexuality. But that almost seems like too much weight to put on this meringue confection of a genre spoof: Its campiness liberates the characters to inhabit a fun, exaggerated universe with no serious homophobia or consequences. Guns are used, but the so-called superspies have such consistently terrible aim that there are no real casualties. And Lucy Diamond’s supposedly nefarious crimes are all reversible — the murders pinned on her are revealed to be misunderstandings, and she returns all of her stolen goods in order to win Amy back.
When this live-action Totally Spies with a lesbian twist debuted, it only made $97,000 and was dismissed by critics. But there were enough moviegoing gays impressed by its snappy dialogue, fun romance, and stunning supporting cast (including Meagan Good, Jimmi Simpson, and Devon Aoki with a French accent) for its reputation to grow online over time. In forums and YouTube comment sections, young girls were asking, “Are there any lesbian films where they just fall in love and have fun and don’t die at the end?” Their answer was D.E.B.S.

Eddie had grown up poor, bread and beans were sometimes the only meal of the week.
He'd never imagined he'd be thrown from the poverty enforced by his deadbeat dad right into the luxury of his extremely affluent Uncle Wayne.
Wayne had been trying to find him for years, but his father's neglect and constant moving meant that Eddie was suddenly yanked at 10 from his little trailer, left for 2 weeks without parent and into his uncle's arms.
An uncle who despite his wealthy empire lived quiet and modest, lived only to look for his beloved nephew.
With Eddie's dad nowhere to be found and Wayne's immense wealth, it was easy for him to scoop Eddie up, whisking him away and transforming pauper to prince.
But becoming a 'prince' meant responsibility too.
Which is why Eddie aged 21, set as the heir to his uncle's logistics empire, was being forced to pick a mate.
Alpha, young and rich, there were now expectations of him. Not from his uncle no, but those around him, the company, the politics and try as he might, Eddie was not immune to the pressure.
He hated it. Hated that at every event or party, an omega was shoved in his direction, usually with no regard for the omega's feelings nor his own.
He could see the leering eyes of Alphas who wanted to manipulate him behind, the smell of frightened omega pricking his nose.
Wayne, a bachelor since his one true love in life Benny had been murdered in a freak accident, hadn't been sure what to do with all of fuss around Eddie either.
He chased away as much as he could but Eddie was still hounded at every corner, getting more incredulous with each day.
So Eddie found himself at an Omega House.
"Are you sure about this Wayne?" Eddie says, scrubbing his face.
"Really not sure what else to do, unless you've got a secret omega lover that you can mate?" Wayne asks.
They both know the likelihood of that.
"Think of it this way Ed, you could give someone a chance they need to do what they want instead of just being shackled to whichever alpha comes along," Wayne tells him, eyes kind, like they always are.
"All you need is someone you can spend time with for a year of engagement,"
Eddie sighs "Yeah. Alright, I just feel like those creepy alphas right now,"
Wayne sighs then too and slides a firm hand on his shoulder. "I know bud, I'm sorry, I am, trust me I'm the last person who wants to be pushing you to this,"
Eddie groans and hugs Wayne.
All he had to do was see if there was an omega who he could gel with, he just needed a close friend for a year. Someone he could trust.
Someone who could cover up the fact that Eddie had never been into omegas and never would.
He steps out of the car, adjusts his collar and a whole body crashes into his.
"Omega Harrington!!!"
Eddie groans, the body on top of his groans as well, scrabbling to get back up and Eddie looks up to see long eyelashes, a constellation of moles and a furious omega.
At least he thinks this hazel-eyed hunk on top of him is an omega because the scene is strange, different, not sweet like most other omega he's met. No this man in front of him has a tang of sharp bitter scent like the cigar room Wayne occasionally brings him to.
It's almost an alpha scent.
The man on top of him growls, full-on growls in anger, but it's not directed at Eddie, at the man who had shouted Omega.
"Not a fucking omega, how many times do I have to tell you or did all that hairspray fizzle your braincells?"
"Omega Harrington, we do not make a scene in front of guests," the man with a very stiff coiffe hisses and makes a grab for the omega on Eddie.
This time the growl doesn't come from the not-omega. No, this growl is deeper and instinctual, Eddie's chest rumbles and it shocks everyone including himself.
The omega and the 'not-omega' both stare at him.
"Please be mine,"
"What an interesting find. Mr Harrington, odd seeing you here," Wayne stands next to Eddie, looking at them both fondly.
"Mr Munson, oh, hi,"
"Would you like to come home with me and my nephew? We're looking for a trusted companion,"
Harrington seems to think this over and Eddie just stares at the man in front of him.
"You going to help me?" Harrington asks.
"In any way we can,"
"Alright, take me home,"

Fic-to-Art #39: Gladiator's ELEVENTH Anniversary! (+ BONUS: Fic-to-Art #36...)
And here we are! March 26th arrived and I did not forget about it, but I paid for my ambitious madness with my wrist and forearm. Somehow, I finished my intended pieces on time, but I do not advise that you ever try to make 9 artworks in 3 days. No, sir. Bad life decisions, that's what that was... but this fic, as anyone knows, moves me to do things I never thought possible, starting with writing the fic itself!
It's really crazy every time it hits me that I've been doing this for as long as I have. It's been a complicated, chaotic journey, with its many ups and downs, but ultimately, it has been our journey. For some people, this is just one more fic in the pile: for me, it's been the best adventure of my life so far. Everyone who has ever been touched by Gladiator, who has ever cherished this story, who's looking forward to the big conclusion, who wants to see how the chaotic war is going to end... you're all part of this crazy adventure along with me, and I can only thank you for joining me.
This year, I had no time to make as big a project as I usually go for. Thus, I did a sort of free-for-all edition of Fic-to-Art over at Patreon and challenged myself to draw as many scenes as I could, out of their suggestions. I even sprinkled in a few scenes I impulsively wanted to draw because I loved writing them or because I look forward to writing them... and this is the result!
In order, the scenes are as follow:
Sokka combing Azula's hair, a common occurrence throughout the story.
Azula watching over a convalescing Sokka in the Chase of Jeong Jeong arc.
The outcome of Sokka's final battle in the Superior Gladiator League, namely a moment where Sokka and Azula more or less gave away their relationship's true nature to the public by raising their hands towards each other...

Alright, that should be enough talking and explaining. Some things are vague, some things aren't, but ultimately I really hope you guys will be looking forward to the scenes you haven't seen yet, and to Gladiator's eventual outcome.
So now... with all this being said and done, I'm gonna go take a trip down memory lane and watch my Tenth Anniversary video once more! Feel free to do the same thing if you'd like to commemorate the fic, I think it's a good way to experience Gladiator all over again, hahaha.

Hello! Your isat siblings au is very good and now has me wondering about how stuff like Sif's wish might play out differently since they're not so horribly isolated. How do they end up thinking about discovering that they're an Islander if they've grown up more constantly reminded of their memory problems (the people who taught him vaugardian are people he's still living and traveling with)?
Unrelated but brain still whirring, do you think the way Sif and Bonny end up joining the party would end up looking different?
i explained the islander thing a few asks ago, but its because nille noticed they were! nille was also a teen when the island dissapeared, and, in the game, shes the one who taught bonnie how big of a deal it was! so of course she'd know. she's from the northern coast, after all :3 (im still figuring out sif's wish btw)
about how they meet the party, though! i was writing that scene just a few days ago, so i'll put that under a readmore :3
"It's fine, we're fine, Bug-"
Bonnie pushed weakly at Siffrin's arms, a pout in their face, "You keep saying that, but you look like crab, Frin."
The cloaked one sighed, "Language."
Bonnie huffed. Siffrin smiled.
He stared at the road ahead, and fixed Bonnie's position so they wouldn't fall, and continued walking.
It had been days since they'd had to run from Bambouche, and while he liked to think himself a capable adult, the sudden change to traveling on his own after living comfortably with Nille and Bonnie for almost a decade, now, had thrown them for a loop.
They were hungry, tired, and stressed. He had managed to keep Bonnie fed well enough, but he didn't risk staying anywhere for too long, fearing the curse catching up to them.
Catching up to him, and leaving Bonnie alone, like it had caught up to Nille. Catching up to Bonnie-
He tried not to think too hard.
His legs shook with every step. Bonnie was not too heavy for them to carry, of course not, but they were exhausted.
He set them down.
“Frin?” Bonnie asked, tilting their head.
“Break time.” He stated, slumping down next to them.
Bonnie nodded easily, laying their head on his shoulder, “Do you think.. that we will find a clean town?”
Clean town, dirty town… That’s how they’d taken to differentiating curse affected towns from normal ones. Bonnie had come up with it.
They were yet to find a clean town.
“Maybe. But only after tomorrow, Bug.” There was no use promising a certain date, but wording it like that was kinder, he thought.
“You think so?”
Siffrin smiled. “Yeah, for sure, Bon.”
They rested there for a few minutes, the forest was not quiet, as wind was picking up, making the leaves rustle loudly.
Then, suddenly, out of the corner of their eye...
A sadness. Paper type, by the looks of it.
They hurried to stand so they could pick Bonnie and run, but…
Three people were fighting it.
Well.. fighting it seemed like a stretch. It looked like they were struggling against it, in Siffrin's personal opinion.
Really struggling. One of them was K.O.’d, the other looked like a rock type, and the other…
He swallowed. He looked at Bonnie, who was dozing off in his arms, and made a decision.
"Bon, hey," he nudged them, and they turned to him, "Stay here for a sec, I will be right back, okay?"
Bonnie blinked, and nodded, their eyes full of trust.
Siffrin smiled, patted their shoulder.
Then, he lunged forward.
"AH!!" One of the strangers exclaimed, and fell back in surprise. He ignored him, and attacked the sadness with their favorite attack, and exclaimed:
"Knife to meet you!" as they attacked.
He fell on his feet, the sadness poofing behind him, and he huffed a shaky breath. He then turned to the strangers, an easy smile on his face, "Hello," he waved.
They stared silently for a few seconds.
The one in the middle- a girl- smiled wide, and reached forward to grab their hand, "Hello! Thank you so much for your help!" She beamed.
Siffrin jolted a bit from the sudden contact, but smiled back, "It was, uh, it was no problem!"
One of the other two who were hanging back, an older lady, nodded along, "Yes, thank you." She said, looking out of breath, "That sadness..."
"Was tough! Really tough!" The other person exclaimed, "I could barely get a hit in!"
"Good thing I took it by surprise then-" Siffrin said, turning back his head to look for Bonnie, "I- nice to meet you, really, but-"
"Wait, wait, wait!" The girl said, not letting go of his hand, "Quest! We're on a quest, to stop the king's curse!!"
Siffrin turned back to her quickly at that, "The... curse? Like the freezing?"
"Yes!" She beamed, "And you seem strong! Won't you join us?"
Siffrin blinked, gaping a little, "Me?"
"Yes, you!" The girl insisted.
"I-" They paused, thinking. If they could help them... then, Nille...
"Okay, I'll help!" He said resolutely.
The man behind the girl put a hand on her shoulder, "Mira! Won't you introduce us?" 
She blushed, "Right! I'm Mirabelle, I'm immune to the King's curse! He," She pointed to the man, "Is Isabeau, and she," She pointed to the lady who was still catching her breath, "Is Madame Odile! What's your name?"
Siffrin smiled, "I'm Siffrin- and I have my little sibling with me back there," He pointed back to the bushes with his thumb, and took a step back, "I'll uh, be right back?"
Mirabelle's eyebrows shot up in surprise, "Oh! Oh, uh! Sure!"
He quickly ran back to his sibling, trying to calm his still racing heart, "Bonnie, you can come out now." He said, pushing aside a bush.
Bonnie's head popped up behind it, "Was that a sadness?" They asked, "I heard people. Did we find a town?"
Siffrin ruffled their hair, making them groan playfully, "No, but I did find some nice people who say they're gonna stop the freezing."
Bonnie stood up, surprised, "REALLY?"
He smiled, "Yes, really! They want us to tag along, what do you think?" He asked gently, already knowing the answer.
"CRAB YEAH!" Bonnie exclaimed, excited, "Nille- she-!!!" They smiled a toothy grin, relieved.
Siffrin nodded, patting their shoulder, "Yeah, yeah."
He took their hand in theirs, and walked back to Mirabelle's party. They ignored how tired they felt, and gave everyone a easy smile.
Chin up, Siffrin. You've got a sister to save.

When you enter the kitchen, you shake your head, giggling. Steve just forgot his lunch, and you told him in the morning at least ten times to take his lunch with him. Sometimes you feel like he doesn’t listen to you, just admiring your body, kissing your face over and over again, and mumbling sweet nothings into your ear. You don’t have much to do today, so you will just bring him his lunch, and then the two of you can spend his lunch break together. But before you make yourself completely ready for the day, you make yourself a bowl of cereal and walk into the living room to watch one of your favorite movies. After the movie, you get ready and decide to wear one of Steve’s t-shirts and a hoodie, which actually belongs to him as well. Then you take his lunch, putting your lunch into the bag as well, and make your way to the Triskelion.
With your favorite music, the way doesn’t feel that long, and you can see the big building already when you smirk softly. Steve doesn’t know you will visit him during his lunch break to bring his food. You’re already excited when you just think about it; not only does the big building give you some excited feelings, but Steve also causes the butterflies in your stomach to go crazy. The two of you have been together for a few months now, but it still feels like you just fell in love with the tall, blond man.
Steve and you met a few months ago. He was just ordering a coffee and some food to the Triskelion, the most adorable building you have ever seen. You were always curious about what it looked like from the inside if there were lots of people walking around, and then you had the chance to get into the buildings and deliver coffee to the famous Captain America.
You stumbled into the building, almost falling over your own feet with the coffee and food in your hand. From the inside, the building was even bigger, and it reminded you of an office. So with your hands full of things, you made your way to the woman behind a desk. She looked like she knew where you could find Captain America.
“H-Hello. I have the food Mr. Rogers ordered. Where can I give the delivery to him?” You asked politely.
She looked up from the screen in front of her and smiled at you. Then she saw the food and the coffee in your hands and looked back at the screen.
“I will tell him his delivery is here; just wait a moment,” she told you, and you nodded.
Your eyes scanned the whole room; it was big, there were some plants in the corners, and next to them were a few couches. And some people were sitting on them, talking to each other, or they were just busy with their work. Some agents were walking through the room, greeting others, some on their phones, and some walking next to others.
The restaurant you work at is small, and there are not even as many people as you see walking or sitting in the hall right now. Then you see a man in gray pants and a light brown shirt walking in your direction. His hair is short and blond, he is shaved, and his steel blue eyes lit up when he saw the food and coffee in your hand.
“Hello, I’m Steve. Steve Rogers,” he said, taking his order out of your hands.
Before the two of you were able to say something else, someone crashed into Steve, and he threw the cup of coffee all over your t-shirt. You hissed softly when the hot liquid met your skin, and Steve immediately apologized. He was looking for a tissue to help you dry the coffee, which soaked the fabric of your clothes.
“I’m so sorry. Please, let me take you out for a co- maybe for a pizza?”
You nodded with a smile and dried your shirt before you wrote down your number and handed it to Steve.
“Don’t worry, and I would love to get a pizza with you.”
Steve’s smirk was from one side to the other, his eyes roaming over your body when you walked out of the building. Your smile was at least as big as his; you were going to have a date with Steve Rogers.
You enter the building, walking straight up to the woman you met for the first time in the Triskelion a while ago. The two of you have talked a few times. When you pick Steve up and she has a shift, the two of you gossip over some agents.
“Picking him up today?”
“No, he just forgot his lunch, and I thought I would spend his lunch break with him then.”
She nods and smirks at you before she looks at the screen of her computer, tapping something.
“He is in Fury’s office. You could go there; the meeting should be done in a bit,” she tells you, and you thank her before you walk to the elevators.
When you get into one, you tap the bottom, which brings you to the floor with Nick Fury’s office. He is kind of Steve’s boss, and he can be funny and a weird man at the same time, at least after things you heard from your boyfriend about the other man. When you get out of the elevator, you walk along the floor, looking for Fury’s office, and you see the door already open.
When you walk closer, you see Natasha and Steve in the room; they are talking to each other, papers are everywhere on the table, and you knock at the doorframe, not wanting to scare them both. They turn their heads towards you, and Steve immediately smirks at you; his eyes light up, and he walks closer to you.
“What are you doing here, princess?” Steve asks, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you close against his broad chest.
“You forgot your lunch at home, and I thought I would bring it then,” you say, holing the back with food up.
Steve smirks and leans closer, capturing your lips with his for a short but sweet kiss. You wouldn’t mind feeling his lips on yours all day and his hands on your body while you get lost in his beautiful eyes. But Natasha interrupts your thoughts when she laughs behind Steve. He turns around, pulling you with him and turning you so you’re standing with your back against his chest.
“What’s so funny?” He asks with a raised eyebrow.
“You’re so old; you look like a guy our age, actually. But you act like an old man, grandpa,” she says, and the two of you burst out laughing.
Steve grumbles behind you, and when you look up at him, he pouts. You chuckle, standing on your tiptoes, and your hands find their way around his neck, pulling him closer until you reach his lips to kiss the pout away.
“I will leave you two love birds then. Have fun- but not in the office, please.”
Steve rolls his eyes playfully and lets Natasha walk out of the room, then he kisses you once again before he lets go of you and puts some stuff together.
“Let’s get downstairs; it’s more comfortable there,” he says when he takes your hand and leads you back to the elevator.
When the elevator reaches the floor in the Triskelion, you get into it and wait to get downstairs, back into the hall. You’re looking out of the elevator, loving the view you have, while Steve stands pressed with his body against you, kissing your neck softly. When the elevator stops a floor deeper, a man with two bodyguards gets into the elevator. Steve turns his head toward the men.
“Rumlow.”
“Rogers.”
Both men greet each other before the elevator gets further down. On the next floor, a lot of men get into the elevator. The next floor and another few men join you in the elevator. Slowly, you’re all pressed together, and Steve kisses your neck once again, leaning closer after looking around and seeing the sweat on someone’s forehead and the hands of a few men near their weapons.
“I love you. Don’t move away; enjoy the view, princess,” he mumbles, and you nod softly.
Then Steve turns around and faces a few of those men. He then says something, but you’re focused on the people walking around. Then you hear a crack, and the elevator suddenly stops. You don’t move, obeying Steve. You hear the sound of metal against metal, punching and groaning, and you see in the corner of your eyes some men lying on the ground. You grip the railing of the elevator, digging your fingers against it, while you hear Rumlow's voice.
“It’s nothing personal, Cap.”
“It kind of feels personal,” Steve says, then you hear another groan before Steve inhales deeply and walks closer to you again. “You’re oke, Princess?”
You nod, turning around to hide your face in Steve’s shirt. You grip the fabric tightly and pull him closer. Your boyfriend’s hands slide up and down your back, comforting you.
“Let’s get out of the elevator,” he mumbles, and he turns around to open the doors of the elevator.
When he does so, there are a few more agents running in your direction. He groans and closes the door, using his shield to let the elevator fall down before he stops it with his shield. You want to scream, but there is nothing similar to the tone that leaves your lips. Steve opens the doors once again, but there are even more agents.

He then walks over to you, wrapping his arm around your waist, before he starts running and crashes with his shield in front of the two of you through the glass off the elevator. You're screaming, your fingers digging into his skin, holding him tight against you while you two fall down, his shield still underneath you when you meet the ground. It wasn’t hurtful, and when you open your eyes - which you didn’t even know you had closed while the two of you were jumping out of the elevator - you see Steve laying underneath you, smirking at you before he kisses you softly.
“What was that? Why did they come into the elevator?”
“They are members of Hydra. Nat and I found it out earlier, before you came with the dinner.”
“It’s flat now,” you mumble.
“That’s oke, we get some food on our way home. Nat will be there later too,” Steve says, helping you get up.
Your legs are shaking, and you’re clinging to your boyfriend and his arm is wrapped around your waist while you make your way to his motorcycle to pick up some food and drive the two of you home.

The cute little Faelantern dress... it is my belief that Sinclair will only reach full self-actualization once she realizes she's a girl. "okay. where the hell do I start.
Sinclair (Limbus Company) is based directly off of Sinclair (Demian - this will come up in a minute), and is a largely withdrawn, melancholic "boy" whose associated imagery is an egg and breaking out of a shell (again - more in a minute), and characters comment sometimes that she seems like she has an inner turmoil/darkness to her. a couple of her outfits just straight up look like mid-transition fits. her appearance in the album art for the song used in her chapter (itself based on the painting described below) is one of the most #girl things imaginable Sinclair from the source text (Demian)
1. struggles with her parents' expectations for her, and her increasing betrayal of those expectations (leading to such lines as "-at times I didn't want the Prodigal Son to repent and be found again. But one didn't dare think this, much less say it out loud.")
2. becomes friends with Demian who, aside from representing a more nuanced take on the black/white logic of point 1, Sinclair regularly remarks how cool it is that Demian's face is kinda feminine
3. begins to view herself as destined to live between two worlds, the light and the dark, human and inhuman, and, interestingly, "man and woman in one flesh". for all this is treated as a fear it's also explicitly stated to be something she desires
4. stops and thinks one day in college "perhaps I am not like other men?"
5. sees some random pretty girl one day and decides the concept of that pretty girl must be the path to return to the world of light/salvation. she learns to paint just to paint this girl and doesn't get it perfectly accurate but is pleased nonetheless. she becomes obsessed with this painting and stares at it while falling asleep before eventually realizes that the painting actually resembles herself, not as she feels she is but "-what determined [her] life, it was [her] inner self, [her] fate ... what the woman [she] would love would look like if ever [she] were to love one. That's what [her] life and death would be like..." - she eventually burns the painting and eats the ashes, y'know normal "girl who hasn't realized it yet" behavior
6. throughout the entire book she has visions relating to and is tied to imagery of eggs and birds escaping their shells to take flight" - Anonymous

on the scale of 1-10 delulu, how likely do you think some new evil gortash ending being made is?
I think it's 50-50, so I guess that converts to a level 5 Delulu.
Why I think it might be happening
1. The Dialogue Bug - I think it’s suspicious that a relatively simple bug (that has been confirmed as a bug) has gone unfixed through so many hotfixes.
EDIT: It’s a common misconception that Hotfix 18 removed all Gortash dialogue changes but that's not quite the case. Here is a rundown of what's missing.
Now, it really is possible that it is really just extremely low priority for Larian. I just think that this, paired with other things, is suspicious.
2. New Evil Endings - we know Larian is working on new Evil endings but we have no details on what those are. However, the fact that only Gortash’s alliance dialogue has changed (edit: there's a small change in his Boss Fight scene too but its tied to the same file. See link above for a full rundown) and gone unfixed is what makes me think maybe there’s more in the works. Like I’ve said before, the dialogue file that this addition is in is the entire file for that office scene. If they wanted to beef up a Gortash alliance as an Evil Ending, they’d most likely have to edit that file again anyway. So why work on something twice when you can just roll it out all at once?
3. Getting Gortash to the end of the game is not as complicated or involved as people think - Gortash dies once the endgame has already been set in motion. You wouldn’t have to actually add that much. All you’d have to do is have the Emperor suck him into the prism too and have them duke it out, or have the Emperor leave him and come up with some narrative explanation for how he got away from the Netherbrain. Then he’d probably have to have a few lines in your little Endgame Pit Stop to speak to your allies - and that’s pretty much it. The rest, if they really had to go bare bones, can be added via mentions of him in the Epilogue. There’s already files that make some mention of calling on the Steel Watch in the final fight.
4. The Extra Delulu point- Larian has always been responsive to fans. They need to set boundaries, and clearly aren’t going to be adding a lot, but I don’t think the fact that Durgetash has risen to one of the top spots on AO3 counts for nothing. That’s something that is clearly measurable data of fan interest. At the very least, I’m certain it’s made them aware of it, we just don’t know if they’ve made the decision to act on it.
Why I think it might not be happening
1. Larian will only be adding limited content from this point forward - my hopes for any Gortash ending were immediately dashed when I first heard this news, but then revived with skepticism when they mentioned the evil endings. We don’t even know if a definitive edition is still on the table, which is where I initially thought they might add Gortash content. It’s very possible that because of this decision, no new Gortash content will be added. They may have also originally intend to add content, but ultimately chose to reprioritize with this new direction.
2. The Absolute Legend that is Jason Isaacs- It’s always been said that having such an incredible voice actor is a catch-22, because it makes calling them back in to record anything new that much harder due to both budget and scheduling constraints. Now, as I said above, not THAT much would need to be recorded, but even if it is only a little this is a very clear reason why it might have to be a no-go.
3. Gortash’s other content - it’s clear that Gortash was a victim of the cut content stick. We find out way too much about him from only letters and mentions that feel really out of nowhere, but ultimately accomplish the job. I could also understand the writers feeling like if they had to pair down his story to what it is, adding it without any additional backup would feel weird.
TLDR; it’s a total toss-up.
The only people that actually know shit are Larian themselves, and no amount of speculation can actually be definitive. Assume the worst, dream of the best, and hope that it lands somewhere in the middle.

Hi, if you’re request are open I was wondering if you could do one where yn is a total loner, has a resting bitch face and has a temper when needed so everybody (including hellfire) is terrified of her, everybody think she’s been in jail and crazy rumors like this but in reality she is just extremely shy and has a huge crush on Eddie. One day in the cafeteria Jason is picking on Dustin or anybody from hellfire and reader temper get the best of her and gets involved and since Jason thinks she a witch or something he immediately gets scared but so Hellfire but when Jason is gone yn turns into her shyly usual persona and mumble something like ‘are you all okay?’ and runs away blushing. Eddie brains gets short circuited from the interaction because he never thought you could be so… sweet and then you can go from there 🤧

Mostly everyone in Hawkins had a tendency to stay away from you, even though you had a few trusted friends you were a bit of a loner. Since you moved to Hawkins two years ago it had always been like this.
You also had a bit of a temper when the occasion called for it, a permanent resting bitch face, and no tolerance for bullshit. So rumours spread around the school that you had been in jail, kicked out of your old school or just plain bad news.
None of the rumours had any basis of fact. Most people didn't realise you were actually very gentle matured. It's just you hated bullies, fakes and idiots, and Hawkins was rife with them.
One person who you truly liked and you were nursing a crush on was Eddie Munson but you were way too shy to do anything about it. He was probably as terrified of you as the rest of your classmates were, the thought made your heart sink.
Maybe one day you'd pluck up the courage to talk to him but every time you thought about it, you would talk yourself out of it.
Fate decided to intervene in the form of a jackass by the name of Jason Carver, he had a penchant for bullying others he deemed as less than him.
His favourite target was Hellfire, never Eddie as he seemed to leave him alone. You were certain Jason was terrified of Eddie and his supposed satanic rituals in the Hellfire Club. Rumours you didn't buy into one bit.
Jason's taunts were particularly bad today. As usual Eddie gave as good as he got but Dustin, Mike and even Lucas got the worst of it. The longer you listened to Jason, the more angry you got.
Who did this asshole think he was? He seemed to think he ran the school because he was dating Chrissy, who was the sweetest girl you had ever met.
When Jason rounds on the younger Hellfire members, begins to harass them even more, you've heard enough.
"Oh shut the fuck up and sit down Carver, no one wants to hear your opinions" there's a collective gasp around the room, more than a few people nodding their heads in agreement.
"Excuse me?" Jason snaps and you stand up and stare him down.
"You heard me. Sit down and be quiet for once, your stupidity is showing" his mouth falls open and he decides to go in for the kill, or at least so he thinks .
"Oh Please, you've been in jail. What was that like?" You stare at him exasperated.
"I've never been in jail or kicked out of my old school for that matter. I just don't like bullies, which means I really don't like you" Jason flounders after this and promptly flees from the scene like a bat out of hell.
Idiot.
The rest of Hellfire gape as you turn around and go suddenly shy at their shocked gazes, "Are you all okay?" Eddie nods and then pulls himself together.
"Uh, yeah. Thanks" you feel awash with happiness at your interaction with Eddie and then leave, your heart racing and stomach full of butterflies.
Eddie's mind was racing. You weren't mean or anything like that, you were sweet and clearly liked him in some way to jump to his defense like that.
Suddenly Eddie was very intent on getting to know you better

Ventress fist fighting the Bad Batch isn't something I thought I needed, but this is actually kind of entertaining.
BAD BATCH THEME. Like, not the full theme, but maybe as close as we'll ever get to it, with the pitching changes to the score over the seasons.
Shitttt, the "I wasn't planning on killing you, but you're making it very tempting" quote was directed at the team.
"We were pawns in the same war. And we all lost. "The Empire is more dangerous than you could possibly fathom. I'm many things, but I am not your enemy." Honestly, I don't think she came here to do harm. They just pushed a little too hard- can't entirely blame them, though, with her record, but still.

Hey there!
I just want to tell you that I really love your writing, your world building is very good and I can imagine it perfectly in my head with how you describe things. I followed Night Market since it was only a few chapters in until it's a finished WIP and I also really enjoy how you add things, details, and change of scenes in the full game for book 1 that covers all the plot holes from the WIP that makes it richer and more realistic. I've been replaying book 1 again now, trying different choices before also replaying book 2 demo to get the feels 👹
Now it feels like I'm rambling useless stuff but in other words, I love your work 🫶🏻 and I enjoy it very much! I can't wait for book 2 but don't forget to take care of yourself too though 😘

Going back over book 1 was a beast but it was well worth it. I felt like it became a much more complete story. There were a lot of little things that I left out which I think was fine for a wip but for the full release, I just wanted the story to feel rich. Like it was a world that you could actually imagine. It took months to go back over all of it and get it to a point that I was happy with. And I'm sure in a year or so, if I go over it again, I'll find more to add. The Night Market feels like a game that is never ending. There is always so much more to explore and I'm excited for the future of it.

The Changing Bentley

Noticed something when reading through this article again.
Finney took advantage of virtual production (VP) technology for the driving scenes in Crowley’s classic Bentley. The volume was built on their Scottish set: a 4x7m cube with a roof that could go up and down on motorised winches as needed. “We pulled the cars in and out on skates – they went up on little jacks, which you could then rotate and move the car around within the volume,” he explains.
Multiple cars? Maybe he's just referring to the Full!Bentley and the Shell!Bentley? Not sure, but it did prompt me to loop around and take another look at the Bentley throughout season 2...

I know there has been A LOT of debate about the bentley in season two, and Neil has answered quite a few asks on the topic, I feel bad for the poor man we should leave him out of these debates lol. However, his answer here is weirdly worded.

Look at these two photos. I think it's clearest to see the color differences if you just look at the door panels.
SO, let's pick apart Neils answer then yes?
The Shell!Bentley had different color seat covers (brown).
The car Aziraphale drives to Edinburgh was not the Shell!Bentley, there were many photos taken from people around this shoot, so the Full!Bentley must have the black/blue interior yes?
The Shell!Bentley must have the brown interior, and must've been what they used to shoot Crowley's London alleyway scenes?
So the Shell!Bentley has the "correct Bentley exterior" and "correct seats"? Are the blue/black seats "incorrect"?

But we know they did film with the Full!Bentley on Circus Lane for at least some of Crowley's London alley scenes as well as the Shell!Bentley. Or at least there are photos of both on location there.

I then did the normal thing and went back and looked at each scene where Crowley is in the alleyway, and looked for two distinct things.
Presence of the rear door handle. The Shell!Bentley does not have one, the Season 1 Bentley did not have one as it was a 2-door and the Full!Bentley in season two doesn't have one until AFTER Aziraphale returns from Edinburgh
Seat color.
If they were filming with both the full and shell Bentleys and are as bad at continuity as some people would like to believe, then there should be some discrepancies in scenes between which cars have rear door handles and brown seats, right? Realistically if they're having all these continuity errors with color grading seat covers and such then there's got to be something here.
Shax calls Crowley and shows up: No rear handle, brown interior
Crowley after refusing to hide Gabriel: No rear handle, brown interior
Crowley sleeping in tactical turtleneck: No rear handle, brown interior
So, maybe they only used the Full!Bentley for scenes where the car is driving on Circus Lane? Well even if that's the case they had the continuity forethought to remove the rear door handles from the Full!Bentley in post because in all scenes in that location it has no rear door handles, and a brown interior, even when in motion.
We are given this lovely wide shot of the Bentley at the end of episode 2, just before Aziraphale takes it to Edinburgh and permanently changes the Bentley. No rear handles, almost looks like it may have the grey side detailing like in season 1. I think the intention with this shot is exactly to give us a good look at the car. Even the 1941 flashback shows us that the car then has no rear door handles and a brown interior.

When Aziraphale leaves Whickber street we get a clear shot of him in the driver's seat with brown seats and when the car drives away you can see it has no rear door handles. Then the next time we see the car we get this:

We get an adorable Yellow!Bentley moment, again no rear door handles, but when our angel changes it back, the car is a solid black 4-door with a blue/black interior. You can clearly see the rear door handle for the remainder of season 2, and from here on out the interior is always black.

And if you think I'm a nutter for going on about the presence/absence of the rear door handles, take a look at these photos of the actual Bentley that was purchased for season 2, before it was painted/modified for the show. Seems a lot of trouble to go through to make a point of omitting them consistently via editing for half the season for no reason?

What's mah point? Mah point...
Is that maybe there weren't two different cars, but the Bentley definitely permanently changed during Aziraphale's Edinburgh excursion and Crowley not only doesn't mention it, he doesn't even seem to notice.
It seems an awful big oversight to use two completely different colored interiors and not notice it or change it in post. I mean, It really wouldn't have even been that hard to just get some different colored seat covers if that was truly what was going on here.
I think the Bentley clearly changes and now the only questions I have are why, and why is it not mentioned. I am slowly falling into an abyss of differing POV's, that we are being told this story from changing perspectives, and I'm currently working on writing a few different writings detailing those ideas. If you haven't checked out my bit on the different lens filters used for filming, check that out, because it was definitely another stepping stone on the path I'm headed down.
Is the Bentley's change evidence of a perspective change/change in narrator? Is it simply that "our car" appears physically different and Crowley doesn't have any objections, so he doesn't mention it? And why is Neil being weird about it?

Every time a wlw show gets canceled I go back to the Legend of Korra. That show wasn't canceled but Nick tried so very hard to. Saying that little boys didn't want to watch a female main character, but all those little boys loved Korra and thought she was awesome. Now take any of the canceled wlw shows and your main viewers are females. The Legend of Korra didn't get canceled, because those little boys enjoyed it. They never cared about the little girls. All these wlw shows are getting canceled even if their viewership reaches the requirement that other shows appear to have. The only difference is two females in a relationship being watched mainly by females. There's no little boys watching it saying that these characters are awesome. Netflix doesn't just hate sapphic relationships, it couldn't care less about any of the females watching anything on it if it's not Emily in Paris or one of those more "girly" shows

#before my dad met my mom he was deeply in love with this trans woman who did drag shows at this local gay bar#and he would go every night. she died of aids but he still speaks abt her so fondly its sweet#but this particular club is what he calls ‘full of old fashioned queers’#the windows were still painted so no one could see inside type old fashioned.#and he talks abt it so fondly but also he’s like. a bit more open abt why he visited so often#now my brother and i are older and also gay#men lmaooo…#my dad straight up told me the best cruising spots one time. that was fun#i think a lot of time when ppl think of older bi men they think of guys who identified as straight or gay then settled down and#figured out when they were older but my dad’s known he’s bisexual since he was#15. and like. he was rlly in gay culture at the time#and its tbh nice hearing abt it. its not like.#super graphic what he says but i acknowledge that my dad had other partners before my mom. some of them men.#and its just like kinda cool to have that elder queer prescense in my family#of course my moms the same way. she talks abt her life working on all#women farms. and living in san francisco and .#being in this lesbian scene in the 80’s and its so cool..#i will admit. i didnt know my parents were queer until i had already come out#but they never. hid it from us it just never came up.#but once it did it was rlly nice to have that perspective.#bc my parents are from a different era of queer ppl it was hard to get them to understand transition at first#bc my dad didnt really know the difference between trans people and ‘crossdressers’ bc a lot of ppl considered themselves as both#when he was in the scene.#but they learned and its just nice to have multiple generations of queer ppl in the family#its comforting.#knowing that my brother and i are educating them as much as they are to us.

The Avengers (1963) #10
#stopp not the Wasp’s position being compared to Rick’s who is a young powerless relatively-inexperienced sidekick#‘Why don’t we make his membership in the Avengers official as the Wasp’s is?’#is her membership unofficially less legitimate?#I thought we were just going with that she was a full part of the team but in execution was less important in fight scenes#also I noted before that the Avengers requiring that members always be available to help on missions whenever called#and it being a big deal if you miss even one mission#means that members have to be in contact a lot and tell the others when they go out of town and stuff#but even with all that contact they’re still maintaining secret identities and are meant to not pry into each other’s lives#which means that conversations are kept kind of vague#and here we see something that Steve clearly has a lot of emotions about discussed in the formal setting of a team meeting#I think that there’s a tension there between the commitment and loyalty and emotional investment#and also distance and formality that membership in the Avengers requires#that could be really interesting if explored in more depth#like they’re friends but they also have rules that they enforce punishments on others for breaking#like not being allowed to participate for a week#and as an aside this all seems very tied to the technology of the era#like I remember in the A:EMH cartoon the Avengers had their own impressive planes at the mansion#but the creative team here is not dreaming quite that big yet#the Avengers have to go to the airport#when Janet and Hank went out of town for a bit a few issues ago Thor was there to see them off in the plane#and they had to tell him how they’d be available to contact through radio#how characters travel and communicate isn’t so simple as I believe it’s portrayed in modern comics#but the specific procedures that that requires seems to me to be pretty integral to how these relationships and team memberships work#which is why that you’re apparently meant to reimagine these comics in a modern setting trips me up#the specific context is important and can’t just changed and not impact the story in any way#marvel#steve rogers#rick jones#my posts#comic panels
