Disabilities exist in Star Wars. Period.
This post is dedicated to certain specific people who say they are not be able to reconcile service animals in Star Wars, especially Jedi, since the Force and technology exist. These people seemingly have never seen Star Wars, where disabilities not only exist but feature prominently in many cases — yes, even in Jedi. So let us prove them definitively wrong here.
From the very beginning, disabilities have existed in Star Wars. In fact, one could argue a feature of a disability is one of the most iconic things about Star Wars. Even people who aren't Star Wars fans, or who haven't seen the movies at all, know the sound of Darth Vader's breathing. Darth Vader -- Anakin Skywalker -- is unable to breathe on his own and needs to be constantly hooked up to a life-support system simply to stay alive. This in itself is an answer to the argument that the Force compensates for everything. Perhaps you might want to say it is the Force that lets him stay alive beyond what would kill someone else, but still it cannot take the place of functional lungs, or grow back missing limbs, etc. Anakin Skywalker is one of the most powerful Force-sensitives to have ever lived, and yet he can still be disabled and need assistance. (Also, because sometimes I see people making the argument that because of all the pain that Anakin is in, he should be forgiven for his actions, let me say this: Anakin Skywalker can be disabled and still be villainous and make choices that hurt untold billions of people. Being disabled does not absolve you of your bad decisions. Disabled people are people too, and all people make choices and that is what determines the kind of person they are. But that's another post.)
Another example of the Force not compensating for everything is Yoda. We see Yoda using mobility aids multiple times throughout the OT and the PT, from a cane to a hoverchair. He is known as one of the wisest and most powerful Jedi ever, and yet he still uses mobility aids. "Yeah, well," you say, "he still fights with his lightsaber and does all those flips, so that doesn't count." This is the same stupid argument that people make against ambulatory wheelchair users. Needing to use a mobility aid does not mean you need to use it all the time. Total paralysis is not the only thing that makes people need to use wheelchairs or similar mobility aids. Often, people are technically capable of walking or moving around or even fighting and doing backflips in Yoda’s case, but the amount of pain and decreased function that such actions would cause are not worth it except for short amounts of time or in dire circumstances. This does not make them less disabled, or mean that they are faking it.
“Must be a Jedi thing,” you say. What about Chirrut Îmwe or Kanan Jarrus, who are both blind (or become so). The Force does not give them their sight back (aside from a certain final scene in Rebels). “It’s only for Force-sensitives, then,” you try next. Try looking at Saw Gerrera, who needs oxygen assistance and wears a pressurized suit over his body. Or how about 99, a disabled clone who helps in brothers and is commended as “a true soldier” upon his death? The clones are excellent examples, for that matter. Wolffe is missing an eye, Gregor has a traumatic brain injury, Echo uses extensive cybernetics to function, among many others.
Maybe still you want to argue that sure, someone might have a limb chopped off or whatever, but technology has come so far in Star Wars that they're not really disabled. Hear me now when I say: having accommodations that help you function in everyday life does not erase a disability. Go back and read that a few times if you need to, because it’s important.
Now, to be clear, I’m not at all saying Star Wars always has amazing disability representation. I know that’s not the case in many, many regards, and I will link below references that discuss it in more detail. But to say that something like a service animal does not belong in Star Wars is, frankly, extremely idiotic and ableist and ignores the long history of disability in the GFFA. Disabled people have always existed in Star Wars and other sci-fi/fantasy media and they always will.

After patching him up, he’s out your window and on your fire escape, swinging his webs through the streets again. Gone without a trace.
Even when you sleep that night, your mind wandered to who he is. Maybe you know him. Hell, he could even be one of your friends, but you wouldn’t know because of that stupid mask.
And it bugged you every day. It even disturbed you and your schoolwork sometimes, you’d be zoning out in class and suddenly you’ve missed everything.
You sometimes wondered if he considered you as a friend or just someone who patches his wounds.
The routine was never ending. You’d patch him up, and he’d be out the window again in no time. Not sparing a last glance at you. Your mind always wandered to him, you were curious if all his thoughts were replaced with you. Like your thoughts were with him.
The night after, you done your usual: waiting for the tap at your window.
Your body sprawled out on your bed as you waited, slowly starting to get bored as you wait. Soon enough, midnight comes upon you, your eyes slowly starting to close, ready to shut your body off for the night.
Until, you hear that noise, he was here, at your window. Your body jolts from the almost slumber.
You get out of your bed, your bones cracking as you get out the position you’ve been in for hours now. You make your way to your bedroom window, cracking open the blinds and seeing the devil himself — Spider-man.
You open the window, he was leaned against your window as he stood there like an idiot on your fire escape.
“Its a bit late don’t you think?” You raise an eyebrow.
Spider-Man shrugs, “I lost track of time.”
You move out the way, nodding your head to tell him to come in.
“You have no limp, are you even hurt?” You query.
“No,” He seemed hesitant at first, but honestly you couldn’t tell because of him being masked. “I wanted to see you.”
“Oh, really? Why?”
He shrugs, “I don’t know, just to check on you, you know how dangerous the streets of New York can be.”
“Thats true, but I don’t think I’ll be in harm, I don’t do anything to offend anyone.”
“Is that a dig at me?”
“Perhaps.”
“Ouch, that hurts.” He fake winces.
“Want me to patch you up?” You sarcastically smile, walking through to your living room / kitchen area.
“Are you alone in here?” He asks as he follows you, his eyes tracing around the place and he notices the silence in the apartment.
“My parents are on some trip, it is irrelevant.”
“So technically you could be in danger, a teenage girl home alone in new york. It wasn’t good for Kevin.”
“Did you just bring Home Alone into this?”
There was a pause, before he speaks again, “…No?”
You almost smile at that, but you decided to conceal it. “So, Spider-Man, why are you really here?”
“I told you, to check on you.”
“Are we even friends?” You replied, leaning against the counter in your kitchen as he stood there awkwardly.
“We can be.”
“Hm.” You bring a finger to your chin, tapping it. “Sure, but I don’t even know anything about you.”
“Sure you do! I’m Spider-Man.”
“No, I mean under the Spider-Man costume.” You correct.
“I hope you mean the mask.”
“Obviously, what else would I mean?”
“I don’t want you getting hurt, okay. You can’t know who I am, okay? I can tell you about me. Not my name though, sorry.” He rambles, playing with his gloved hands.
“Okay… favourite Star Wars movie?”
“A new hope. Iconic. I can quote the lines. What about you?”
“Definitely has to be Return of the Jedi or Attack of the clones.” You answer.
“Hm, not too bad.”
You decide to let the questions coming, “Favourite character?”
“Uh…” He thinks for a moment, “Luke Skywalker, or maybe Anakin.”
You nod, “Mines have to be Leia or Padme.”
“Great characters.”
“Agreed. No one can play Leia like Carrie Fisher did.”
“That’s true.”

Please Stay. || Anakin Skywalker x Reader
Tumblr media
After Anakin joins the dark side, he fears you will leave him for the Jedi order.
Word Count: 868
AU where the events in Mustafar didn’t happen. (Anakin doesn’t lose both legs, his other arm, and burn in lava. Basically doesn’t become the iconic look of Darth Vader.)
Includes: Hurt/Comfort, mentions of death and violence, reader is a Jedi, mentions of cheating and jealousy, nightmares
You were pacing your apartment that you shared with your husband Anakin. Obi Wan had just left after telling you some horrible information. Anakin, your sweet Anakin, had joined the dark side. He said he had killed younglings. You were at a loss for words, you didn’t know what to think or why he would do this.
There was fear all throughout your body, what if he hurt you? Would he ever do that? Just an hour ago you would’ve said no but now, you weren’t too sure.
Your head whipped around as you heard the door to your home slide open with a mechanical hiss. Anakin stepped inside a look of anxiety and frustration on his features and his breathing ragged and heavy.
His eyes locked onto you and he started towards you but you stepped away, out of his path. This made him stop and frown. “Anakin, tell me it isn’t true.” You started.
“Tell you what isn’t true?” He asked genuinely. You sighed, “Obi wan has been here.” You said, this made him scowl. “He has told me of some terrible things. That you’ve turned to the dark side… that- that you’ve killed younglings.” you rambled, looking at him nervously.
Anakin took several steps closer to you. “Obi Wan is trying to drive us apart. He is turning you against me!” He hissed. You shook your head. “No, no he cares about us!” You insisted.
He looked confused “us?” He asked, puzzled. “He knows. But it’s fine, He wants to help you Anakin!” You insisted again. “I DON'T NEED HIS HELP!” He scowled.
“But Anakin, Obi Wan said-“ you began. “ENOUGH ABOUT OBI WAN. I DONT WANNA HEAR ANYMORE ABOUT HIM!” He barked at you. “WHAT YOUR LEAVING ME NOW BECAUSE OF HIM. YOUR WITH HIM NOW? YOUR SLEEPING WITH HIM?” He accused, quite aggressively.
An even bigger frown painted your face, “No Anakin. No im not! I would never, I love you!” You insisted. “Then join me!” He requested. “I’ve grown powerful, more powerful than the chancellor. I could overthrown him. We can rule the galaxy- together!” He looked at you lovingly.
Your gaze softened as he spoke, his idea sounded crazy and you weren’t sure what to think. You opened your mouth to speak, “Anakin, I love you bu-“ he interjected as you began. “Then don’t leave me. Please.” He said, now close and looking down at you.
There was a look of desperation in his eyes, which now seemed to be swelling with tears. Your heart melted at the sight. “Just…why did you do it Ani?” You asked solemnly. You needed a true honest answer. Was it a greed for power? A lust for death?
He blinked and a tear rolled down his cheek, “I did it for you my love. I’ve…been having dreams. Premonitions of your death. I needed to save you, I’m not going to let you die like my mother. The chancellor told me of a way I could use the force to save you. All I had to do was embrace the dark side….” He explained as he cried softly.
Your arms wrapped around him, your hands finding his hair and carding through it as he immediately melted into your embrace and broke down in your arms. “Oh Anakin. I promise I’m not going to die. I told you they are just dreams.” You comforted.
He sniffled, “But. But what if they aren’t. They weren’t last time.” He reminded you, and you knew all too well what happened last time he had dreams like this.
“Ani. I’m a powerful Jedi master. I can take care of myself I promise you.” He just frowned at this as he pulled away and looked at you. “The Jedi is poison. If we leave we could be together and not have to hide. We could be all powerful. We could do anything.” He rambled, desperate to convince you.
You sighed and rubbed your hands over your face. “Anakin I can’t….” You breathed out softly. You were conflicted by your morals and the man you loved for than anything.
He dropped to his knees. His arms wrapping around your abdomen and his head turning up to look at you. “Please. Please stay. I need you, I can’t live without you.” He begged.
Your gaze softened and your hands once again found his hair, running through it and taming the mess it had become. “Alright Anakin. I’m right here, and I’m not going anywhere.” You conceded, pulling his head against your body.
He whimpered as he cried softly into your abdomen. “I love you so much.” He mumbled. “I love you too Anakin.” You assured him. Eventually he stood up and pulled you over to the couch, laying down and pulling you on top of him.
His arms wrapped around your waste and held you tight. “Thank you. I will give you anything you want my love. You will be my queen.” He mumbled against your head before kissing it. You smiled softly.
Turns out in the end. Nothing would be more important than the man you love. You knew he would do anything for you, and you would do the same for him.

Iconic Homerotice Betrayals: Round 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*I actually haven't been in a convention for 10+ years so I don't know if that's still true.
Round 2 Directory
Context:
Anakin/Obi-Wan
Summary by Anonymous Contributor
Imagine this. You are Obi-Wan Kenobi. Your jedi master (basically your teacher & parent), finds this random ass kid on a backwater planet, promises to teach him against the wishes of basically every jedi master with a say in this, gets killed and saddles you with the promise to teach the kid. You are now a 25yo with a 10yo kid. That kid is the chosen one. His name is Anakin Skywalker.
For years you love the kid, raise him and teach him to the best of your ability. You see him knighted, and you fight along with him in a galaxy-wide war. He is the one who has your back. You trust him with your life and the lives of your men. Sometimes he makes crazy plans, but usually it all works out. He gets a student of his own, and you find yourself co-parenting a teenage girl and everything is ok, it looks like you're gonna win the war and be able to have peace again.
Wrong.
Your men turn against you and your people are slaughtered. Leading the assault on your temple and slaughtering the younglings? Anakin. You go to the senator he has been close with since he was a child and find out not only is he married, no. He's also got a kid on the way. So you stow away on her ship to get to where he is, when you get there he almost chokes the senator to death and you fight, because "if you're not with me, then you're against me" he said, and you're not with him on this. He was your brother, and you had to cut off all 3 of his remaining limbs and leave him to burn on the lava planet of mustafar.
You take his wife to a medic space station, she gives birth to not one but TWO kids, and then proceeds to die of a broken heart. To make sure the children are safe, you split them up, giving the girl, Leia, to a trusted friend, another senator, and taking the boy, Luke, to Anakin's step-brother.
For a decade you hide, wasting away, unable to process the genocide of your people, until Leia is abducted and your senator friend contacts you to help. While trying to rescue her, you find out the bastard didn’t even have the decency to die but instead became Darth Vader, a sith lord. You’re still too traumatized, too cut off from your powers, to give him a proper fight. He burns you, and you’re saved. You rescue Leia, but you have to make a sacrifice, knowing he will follow you if you split away from the group of refugees, making sure they and Leia will survive. You fight but its not really a fight, and he traps you to die a slow death under a pile of rocks.
But then you realise that it can’t end like this, you fight, and you win. He says “You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker. I did.” absolving you of your guilt. You could kill him, but you don’t. You walk away. You’re a jedi. You have no interest in killing him, you’ve done it once already.
Years later, Leia is once more in Vader’s hands. You go to rescue her with Luke, whose aunt and uncle have just been killed by the empire. Once more, you sacrifice yourself, fighting Vader as a distraction for the rescue mission. You will not win this. You know it. But when Vader kills you, you become more powerful than he could ever have imagined.
You help guide Luke, and eventually, Vader is defeated, not by Luke, not by Obi-Wan, but by the light still within him, and Anakin Skywalker dies free of darkness. You reunite to watch over the future together as force ghosts. The End.
Sasuke/Naruto
Summarized by anonymous contributor
Two traumatized orphans find kindred souls in each other (even if they're too emotionally stunted to admit it even to themselves). They both grow stronger, but then Sasuke grows jealous of Naruto's progress. He's obsessed with strength, needing to get revenge for his family, and Naruto threatens that. Sasuke decides he's not getting the strength he needs from the village, so he leaves- but Naruto chases him. They face off in a dramatic waterfall battle before the giant statues of historical figures (that also had a friends-to-enemies thing, let's go Symbology), and Sasuke manages to beat him. He swears he wants to kill him, but when he finally has the chance, he just hangs over Naruto's unconscious body... face to face, just staring at him from inches away... before he gives up. He can't kill him, even if he refuses to admit to himself.
Why.
Fast forward several years, Sasuke is 16 and "evil", Naruto is OBSESSED with getting strong enough to bring Sasuke home. They fight - over and over and over again, Naruto trying Desperately to bring Sasuke home, and Sasuke refusing over and over again. Everyone tells Naruto it's a lost cause, but he refuses to give up. And somehow, Sasuke never works up the will to kill Naruto.
Eventually they work past it all and end up joined at the hip (and in gay love, no matter what Kishimoto tries to say).

Speak Now Ranking
Not sure if anyone cares but I’ve finally listened to the entirety of Speak Now 3 times and I want to rank it so… here goes (please don’t kill me, these are just my opinions)
22. Superman (just wasn’t for me. Like, it’s not bad but it’s not anything special to me)
21. Ours (I liked it, it was cute)
20. The Story of Us (can you believe that this was when the ranking got impossible? That’s how much I fucking loved this album, I hate that this song is so far down)
19. I Can See You (very sensual and I love the vibe of ‘what would you do’ love the instrumental as well)
18. Electric Touch (love the story of the song so much)
17. Mine (has always had a special place in my heart and I love it so much, hate that it’s so far down)
16. Mean (what an icon)
15. Innocent (who you are is not where you’ve been… your string of lights is still bright to me… okay? Ouch?)
14. Haunted (so cool, love the vibe)
13. Sparks Fly (so cute!)
12. Back to December (this song used to hurt me so badly for no reason?)
11. Dear John (I got nothing to say other than… John if I ever see you you’re getting bitch slapped)
10. Better Than Revenge (perfect song, love it so much if Joe Jonas doesn’t dress up as a moth for Halloween then what’s the point?)
9. Foolish One (Got nothing to say, perfect)
8. Timeless (this one hurts me on so many levels but I don’t wanna get personal so I’ll just leave it at that)
7. Castles Crumbling (so fucking good, I saw somewhere that it was based on Anakin Skywalker, not sure if it’s actually true but that’s my headcannon now)
6. Speak Now (I cannot explain the love I have for Taylor’s storytelling songs. Like, no body no crime? Give them all to me, so good)
5. When Emma Falls in Love (so beautiful, also, do you want to be Emma or be with Emma?)
4. Never Grow Up (fun fact: this song is very famous for quinceañeras for the dance with the dad/grandad and I actually used this song for my dance with my grandpa in my quinceañera party. Also, I become an emotional wreck everytime I listen to it)
3. Enchanted (no words, just… so beautiful)
2. Last Kiss (this hurts me on so many levels, who gave her the right?)
Long Live (I have no words to describe my love for this song, it’s just so good and gives me so much energy and life I can’t even)

Your turn to gush about Star Wars! What do you love? Who are your favorite characters? Do you have a favorite era?
Favorite character? Where do I even BEGIN?
It's funny because I completely recognize that Star Wars came up with interesting worlds and uniquely creative concepts and that Disney somewhat continues that effort - Jedi Knights are rad, the Force is fascinating (if nebulous), the idea of a rebellion fighting an Empire compelling - but to me what's interesting is that (1) Luke Skywalker is Vader's son and (2) Luke saves Vader. Star Wars could have been about long haul truckers for all I cared about the other aspects of the story. I like them; they make it all the stronger; but to me, those two points are Star Wars magic sauce and what distinguishes it from other sci-fi action shows.
As far as fav characters, to self-plagiarize a little, it's my man himself, Uncle D (as that one long-lost legends character would say). I love Darth Vader to a point that is probably concerning. Haven't we all been tempted to snap an incompetent coworker's neck? (okay, okay, maybe that's going a little far). He's the most powerful person ever except when it comes to emotional boundaries or boundaries in general. He's capable of leveling planets but he's not capable of having a normal conversation with someone. The comedic potential is endless. The tragedy is depthless. You can make him ridiculous. You can make him terrifying. You can make him twisted. You can make him too honest. All of these characterizations are true to who he is yet somehow don't contradict. I think almost every star wars fanfic i've ever written (and I've written over 357k words of sw fanfic) has him in it in some way shape or form. He's one of the most iconic figures in cinematic history for a reason.
My favorite eras are shrinking more and more as retconning keeps pulling the rug out from under the fandom's feet, but I'll go with the OT and TCW. i also am increasingly wistful for the time of Legends - sure, half those stories were weird as hell, but it was in a knobbily charming way versus the slick blandness that characterizes a lot of media today. Also, I loved the legends grandkids so much, especially Ben Skywalker. He and Anakin Solo are two characters that I really wish had more of a fandom presence.
I think as i get older, what interests me about star wars are the people behind the scenes. I love thinking about what it must be like to be the maintenance man for Vader's med-droids, or Palpatine's tax accountant, or an intern for the Empire. It must be ridiculous to have to live in a universe run by murderous space wizards that switch out the government as often as changing a pair of socks. Imagine having to change all the forms from saying "Galactic Republic" to "Empire" (what, I'm really fun at parties). They're ideas I love kicking around my brain a lot!

Why Tori Meadows is a sith lord
You know... I was thinking about doing some shitpost “proving” that Tori is unironically a god tier duelist that was paid to hold back for the entirety of Zexal and could actually obliterate any duellist foolish enough to stand in her way.
But the thing is... that’s not really a joke to me. I honestly truly believe Tori would be capable of great viciousness as a duellist if just given the chance. Just look at Duel Links:
Tumblr media
That is a girl who is out for blood, a war machine in the making, a kid who decided to get serious about duelling to the point of being able to “beat everyone in a snap” (the game’s exact words) just out of rage and spite alone. That is iconic and legitimately deserves more attention in the fandom.
So now for my real arguement: I think Tori Meadows is a sith lord.
Tumblr media
Yes, Samuel L. Jackson. This seemingly innocent 13 year old girl is a sith lord, one more powerful than either Darth Sidious or Darth Vader could have ever hoped to be.
Now for people who aren’t familiar with the beloved wonderful six film Star Wars saga, the villains, aka the sith lords, gain power from anger. Fear and anger and hate are a surefire path to fall to the dark side. It’s what did Anakin in and turned him into Darth Vader. Tori in Duel Links fought and destroyed the fools that got in her way with her anger and hate, Astral even confirms this is what gives her power:
Tumblr media
Tori duels with anger, she duels with hatred of Yuma’s sheer stupidity, she uses them all to her advantage but unlike every other sith lord in the series, she isn’t destroyed by them. Only one other has managed to accomplish this feat, the most powerful force user in the galaxy: Luke Skywalker. See, he’s the most powerful force user because as of the final chronological film in the saga, Return of the Jedi, he’s the only one left, so he’s the most powerful by default.
Also, more relevantly, he also defeated Darth Vader in a duel with his anger yet didn’t fall to the dark side, throwing his lightsaber aside and refusing to turn to the dark side even after feeling its power firsthand. Tori has managed to do the same within Duel Links, harnessing her anger to give her strength, to give her focus, so she could hunt down Yuma and once she accomplished her goal, was able to let go of her anger, rather than letting it be her undoing like other foolish siths. Tori has done something no other sith before her has managed to do: went down the exact fear, anger, hate pathway without ending up at the final step: suffering.
Tumblr media
“But wait!” You cry. “How could Tori possibly be a sith lord if she can’t even use the force?!”
Tumblr media
Foolish padawan. A wise sith lord doesn’t reveal their force abilities to the masses, they keep it under wraps until the perfect moment. Palpatine for example. He didn’t use his force abilities to save himself from the Zillo beast in Clone Wars, he kept it secret until perfect moment: the chance to murder four jedi, gain a new apprentice, and take over the entire galaxy.
Tori never had to reveal her abilities because no one was a true threat to her power. Besides, what need would she have to display such abilities in a world where card games seemingly reign supreme? I say seemingly because they do not. The dark side of the force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. It is more powerful than your card games could ever hope to be.
Still not convinced? Take a look at Tori’s eyes compared to Anakin’s dark side eyes:

I think I’ve said enough to convince you :)
I end this obvious shitpost with a warning: the moment Palpatine decided to reveal his sith abilities was the day he committed genocide and took over the galaxy. The day Tori chooses to reveal herself will likely be an even more universe shattering event...

Not a true or false but I just realised that your icon is Anakin and Artoo, I don't know how I missed it before lol. Now I'm going to go around looking at everybody's icon and become the surprised pikachu meme
Thanks for noticing my icon! I have a soft spot for Artoo because of everything he’s witnessed and been a part of in the Skywalker Saga. I often think about how he must have been so excited to see Obi-Wan again after all those years only to have him go “I don’t ever recall owning a droid” and being like, god this bitch hasn’t changed one bit.
I’m going to look at everyone’s icons now too!

alright i’ve given it 2 days to avoid posting spoilers but now it’s time for some Thoughts on the obi-wan kenobi finale.
(it goes without saying, spoilers ahead)
i can’t imagine how hard it is to write a sequel to a prequel. especially something as iconic as star wars, it’s such a tall order. i for one enjoy getting some of the gaps filled in with extra content, but i recognize nothing can really happen that hasn’t already been implied.
for example, we know obi-wan and anakin can’t kill each other. we know reva can’t kill luke. we know leia returns home safe. everything else is a wild card but ultimately the lead characters have to find harmony after the upheaval of the conflict, because a state of harmony is where we pick up in a new hope.
but we were given one thing, one huge thing that we didn’t already know for certain, that somehow, despite being sandwiched between two trilogies, moves anakin’s story forward:
he doesn’t blame obi-wan. he blames himself.
in revenge of the sith we leave anakin believing padme and obi-wan were conspiring against him. he blames them for allowing this to happen to him. his delusions of grandeur destroy his trust in those he loves most.
but now we know! for absolute certain! he doesn’t! blame! obi-wan!
there are so many implications here: that anakin has had time to introspect, that he knows obi-wan didn’t betray him, that he’s telling us anakin is dead and all that remains is darth vader, but it’s not true. there’s still some anakin there and we know this because of his sacrifice in return of the jedi.
if that shit doesn’t make you want to rip your own heart out and eat it, i don’t know what to tell you.
now let’s talk about obi-wan.
in star wars the concept of personal agency is flimsy. in large part this is a craft issue--we’re taught that in “good” movies characters have to get boxed into a corner in order to act. we see a pattern of characters acting out of desperation, with no other choice. even the effects of the dark side have a certain physiology, a physical disease that takes over them and causes them to act--we see it in both anakin and kylo ren. it’s not their fault they killed a bunch of people, it’s the dark side eating away at them. rey literally stabs the dark side out of kylo ren in the rise of skywalker.
you could argue that luke makes the choice to embark on an adventure in a new hope (and rey in the force awakens [but note that anakin never *truly* has a choice to go with obi-wan and qui-gon in the phantom menace. he’s ten years old and his mother is enslaved]), but i think being called to act is also an inciting predicament that denies choice. after all, if luke or rey say no, there’s no story.
but in the finale, both anakin and obi-wan decide to fight each other. even roken is like “you literally don’t have to do this, we’re going to be fine.” and obi-wan is all “yeah but i’m gonna.” and anakin doesn’t have to go there, in fact shouldn’t go there, but he does, because he needs to see obi-wan. that’s what the show is saying over and over, outright: he can only see obi-wan. they could have written the entire series without that final showdown. action-wise, the chase is high-stakes enough, and there’s already so much precedent to make vader the big bad on your tail and you escape his grasp by the skin of your teeth. that could have happened, and it wouldn’t have made a difference.
but the series works hard to develop character motivations by tying up the loose ends of the prequel trilogy. i think this is the big difference between plot-driven and character-driven stories. in plot-driven stories, the characters must act. in character-driven stories, the characters choose to act. this is the first live action star wars media that has given us a character-driven story, where nearly all the events happen because the main character makes them happen, and not because we’re already aware of the events that happen prior to and after the events of the series.
so neither of them go to the fight with the intention of killing each other. they know they can’t kill each other, because they are each other’s weakness (obikin: canon). the only conclusion i can really make is that they go there--against the advice of everyone around them--to see each other. maybe obi-wan goes to see for certain his “friend” is gone. maybe anakin goes just so he can tell him, it’s not your fault. maybe they just want closure, because the next time they meet will be the last.

10 Characters// 10 Fandoms// 10 Tags
pick 10 characters from 10 fandoms and tag 10 people. Thank you for the tag @ladyyennefer and @therealvikingstrash !!
Guy of Gisbon (BBC Robin Hood) Currently doing a rewatch of this show and forgot how he was a favorite. Clearly dark, hot-headed, men with a soft spot are just as much a thing from my past as it is true for me today :)
Emma of Normandy (Vikings: Valhalla) She's an icon. A badass in her own way. And marries a dark, hot-headed Viking man. How can I not be obsessed with her?
Daniel Arlington aka Darlington (Ninth House) I also have a love for demon fighting, hell exploring, men with a dark past and cynicism. His girlfriend is also a badass fellow demon fighter, so double the trouble ;)
The Fool (The Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb) I love this queer, silly, loyal, outsider. That's all. He is everything. And I need to pick this series back up.
Gabriel De Leon (Empire of the Vampire) Again, dark, hot headed, complicated past, soft spot, the pattern is clear. This man is the only vampire I have considered my favortie, and this book is an all time favorite. I can't wait for book two!
Morgana Pendragon (BBC Merlin) My original queen with a dark heart. She will always be a favorite and always included on any list.
Calian (Walker: Independence) It is so hard to pick a favorite from this short lived western, but I also so happen to love a long-haired, heart of gold, humble man (ode to my Prince Caspian days). Calian was the best ❤️
Donna Noble (Doctor Who) You know, Donna was never an all time favorite companion of mine, but I am loving her in the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary. And plus my favorite Doctor is back! I think this special is gonna make me supper emotional when it is over.
Rissa (Plated Prisoner Series) As for a lot of fantasy romance that I read, secondary characters tend to become my favorite. This is true for my little spit fire, Rissa. She has crawled her way out of the pits, and I just want her to be happy. Particularly with a grumpy, hairy, obsessed with her soldier named Osrik. Gold can't come soon enough! ✨️
Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars) Watching the new Star Wars series -- Asoka and the Obi Wan-Kenobi tv series -- has reminded me of my early kid days and watching Hayden Christian as Anakin. The Original dark, complicated past, misunderstood character. The nostalgia was real.
I don't believe I have 10 people who I can tag, but I will do my best. @lafiametta @naps4bats @phoenixwrites @guinevereslancelot

@commandsir asked: “ thank you for your patience. “
Tumblr media
It would be night soon. The Coruscanti sun tracked slow progress toward the endless horizon, the city a blaze of golden light sprawled out at his feet. This evening was just like any other, and yet it bore a vaguely prophetic intimation, as though the night that would soon fall was a harbinger of dark days to come. He felt more than saw the monolith of looming shadow—a black unknown that threatened to swallow up everything he held dear.
It was a feeling he couldn’t seem to escape these days.
The delicate voice of the padawan broke the yawning silence of the chamber, splitting his reverie. He shifted, boots scuffing lightly against the polished marble floor. True, his heart was heavy as of late—but there was a genuine affection to his expression as he smiled at her. Bright eyes twinkled in the fading light, warmth brightening a tired countenance. That was the true mystique of Obi-Wan Kenobi: that no matter how bleak the odds, he could always seem to find a smile.
“Believe it or not, I was once your age too, you know. I’m patient because I remember what it was like.” With a quiet chuckle he turned to look out over the city again, folding his arms across his chest. The names of Skywalker and Kenobi bore clout these days, chained to the renown that came with one military victory after another. People had taken notice, rendering them as larger-than-life icons of the Republic. But here, in the quiet peace of the Temple, he was none of that. He was just a man sitting alone with his thoughts, trying to make sense of his worries. She would have been forgiven to think he was finished, but then the fine timbre of his voice broke the silence once more:
“Master Qui-Gon was going to train Anakin originally. Have I ever told you that? It was his dying wish that I do what he could not.”
A deep, steadying breath grounded him in the present, keeping the phantoms of the past at bay. He’d lived through Qui-Gon’s death a thousand times in his head—it was too comfortable a trap when his fears began to creep in, shaking his resolve. But now was not the time.
“He was as fine a Master as I could have ever hoped for. But he could be… reckless. Like a couple other people I know.”
Eyebrows raised, he turned more fully toward her this time, crystalline eyes fixed on hers. She was so young, yet she’d seen so much. There was an incredible wisdom to the young padawan, in spite of her fiery temperament. Her future was one of greatness—if she survived long enough to see it. Heavy hands gripped her shoulders and he leaned down to catch her gaze.
“We are fighting a terrible darkness, Ahsoka. It has taken so much from us already. Please understand… when I’m hard on you and your Master, it is only because I don’t want it to take you, too.”

Syril is a fictional character. Plenty of people love Vader, even Palpatine and they are both worse. Preference in fictional characters says absolutely nothing about what people would support in real life.
Ah good I've gotten a bunch of new followers recently, so I guess it's time to cull the herd of weirdos who think fiction doesn't influence reality <3 if you don't agree with me, just try to hear me out but if you won't, just unfollow I have no patience for fascism apologia, fictional or otherwise.
When I say stan, I am talking about a fan that defends their fave no matter what. I'm not talking about someone who just finds a character interesting. I do have Opinions about people who watch Andor and find Karn to be the most interesting of the characters because there is a trend of white fans finding the white side character more interesting than leading characters who are racialized as non-white. But to be clear I think Syril Karn is a FASCINATING character. I do. He is a well-written and acted neo-nazi in the making. I'm not talking about people who think he's a compelling character. I'm talking about those who gravitate towards him over a main character who is coded as an immigrant and as indigenous and who, coincidentally, is also sort of written as having a redemption arc of sorts and who we literally see murder an ally in his first scene in Rogue One.
I was just thinking about Vader's fandom. Of course Vader and Palpatine are worse, they're the og Imperial baddies.
I don't know a lot of fans who think Palpatine is good or redeemable though. I know George Lucas had a Stupid Idea about some girlfriend scorning him and then that's why he goes evil... lol that's dumb and I hate it but thankfully that's not canon. There's not a whole lot of people making excuses for Palpatine, or begging for a redemption arc. Why? Because we understand that he is too far gone, that he has crossed a line that he will never come back from. He has no interest in redemption, he is a true believer in his sithy shit. That doesn't mean he isn't a good character or a great villain. He is, of course he is. He's iconic for a reason.
Anakin has a sob story and his stans are annoying tbh - he's got a horrifying background, he was enslaved and his trauma is never really dealt with properly. I have empathy for him. But he is also undeniably not someone people should stan - his views on politics are not great even when he's 19. and then despite all the good he does as a Jedi and the decency he has in his heart, he goes fash and kills a bunch of kids. Commits genocide and then enforces Palpatine's will for decades.
It's interesting that in the original trilogy we don't see him actually doing a whole lot of fascist shit - he holds Leia back from Tarkin as Tarkin commands Alderaan be destroyed, but he's more or less meh on the whole death star thing. He's a fascist because he's an Imperial, but he is focused primarily on Luke most of the trilogy. His arc is not so much about the Empire in the ot is about connecting with a past he thought he lost, connecting with Anakin Skywalker as well as Luke. A father's love for his son, that self-sacrificing love parents should have for their children. The redemption works because Anakin hates what he has become and recognizes that he was the reason he never got to have the family connection he wanted his whole life - he experiences self-awareness and growth, and that is what allows him to break free of the Emperor's control and save Luke - and ultimately save the galaxy. But Anakin's redemption is also only in Luke's eyes. To the rest of the galaxy Darth Vader is a war criminal. He would never be allowed to live in the New Republic. He would have to atone for his crimes. So Anakin has to die on the Death Star, he isn't allowed to just go join up with the Alliance and finish off the Imperial Remnant.
Darth Vader is less overtly in control of the Empire - even in ANH it's fairly obvious that he's not the top dog. It's like, Tarkin is a fabulous character but no one would want him redeemed LOL.
And of course there are people who have faves that are bad people. But I've seen this film before - the Kylo Ren stans come to mind most notably, but yes Anakin stans are weird too. In TFA Kylo Ren was not sympathetic - he had literal royalty for family and a privileged upbringing because of his parentage. He was a mess - violent, angry, cruel and a mess. He was actually a compelling villain at first because he was intended to be a villain - he wasn't some woobified romantic antihero bullshit that he became thanks to R*ylos, Rian Johnson and then ofc JJ Abrams. Kylo Ren was a metaphor for a neo-nazi, even if Disney shied away from precise politics in the sequels.
Redeeming him was ridiculous because the cause for him was the point, not the consequence like it was with Vader. Kylo Ren was a true believer who wanted to finish what Vader started - blah blah comics blah blah books I'm sorry, the movies showed us what they showed us and everything else was damage control to make him more sympathetic.
I don't care what Luke did in TLJ, I don't think it's in character for the guy who thought Vader had good in him, but let's say it's totally in character and makes sense and was wrong. Okay but trauma does not excuse genocide. Trauma does not excuse mass murder. This should be obvious - and of course since you can divorce fiction from reality, anon, I'm sure you wouldn't excuse Kylo Ren's actions.
There is no moment when Kylo Ren, whose whole thing IS the cause, seems to understand that he was wrong to believe in the cause of the Empire and the Dark Side, there is no real redemption. He just thinks Palpatine's granddaughter is hot ig and saves her.
I am not against redemption arcs. I love a good redemption arc WHEN IT WORKS. Zuko in ATLA works because he realizes that he is wrong, he condemns the system he supported as a child and actively works to repair the harms done by him and his ancestors. Vader's works because he kills the Emperor and dies after making amends with Luke (and only with Luke, which again is why Anakin's redemption is a personal one but not a political one).
So why is Anakin's redemption more believable than what someone like Karn's might be? Well for one, we have NO evidence that Karn is even capable of redemption. There is nothing in his actions that signifies a change of belief or conflicting feelings about ideology. He seems to understand that he is in over his head on Ferrix, but this is a man who shows instead all signs of DOUBLING DOWN. Even the ISB officer who shuts Pre-Mor down points out that Karn is PROUD. This is a man who lines up nicely with most of Umberto Eco's 14 characteristics of fascism, which I am planning on writing further about.
What is there to sympathize with? A mom who he has a complicated relationship with? So does Cassian. And yet, people are literally justifying Karn's belief in corporate rule because some cops fucked around and found out. They are writing the very copaganda that the show is actually trying to combat.
Not for nothing it doesn't escape me that the Star Wars fandom has a bit of a problem with fascism, and unfortunately I think that is due to a number of things:
poor media literacy
poor critical thinking skills
poor understanding of history
aesthetic over substance
It has real-world consequences. These people have harassed POC in star wars viciously. They have made fan spaces unsafe for marginalized people. I'm not saying that Karn fans are like the Geeks and Gamers level shit, because I doubt those idiots are even watching Andor.
Fiction impacts real life. I can list the studies that show Black children playing with white dolls and internalizing that Black people are uglier, or stories about how Law and Order: SVU literally has had victims of SA go to police and be re-traumatized when the cops did not support them. I will also never forget that American History X, which is explicitly ANTI FASCIST, has a massive neo-nazi fan base because the fascists look cool. They didn't get the memo because they didn't want to.
Of course it doesn't mean everyone who likes Karn is a neo-nazi, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were a lot of white fans of his who can see themselves more closely in Syril Karn than they can Cassian, and that is concerning given who he is and what he represents, and what he has NO evidence to suggest he ever WILL represent.
Anyway. Fuck Syril Karn stans.
