* Raised in a Mormon household with incredibly different siblings often left Suzie feeling alone and forgotten– even in a household teeming with activity at all hours of the day. It wasn’t her dad’s fault, or even her siblings– Lord knows they had enough on their plate– but no one understood Suzie, at school or at home. At school, she was the only girl in the A/V club, which often meant she was ignored and pushed to the side, even though she was the most adept with computers by far. And at home, her dad was so busy with the littles and her older siblings were totally not into math and science nerds like her. It’s not like she looked like any of her family, either; Suzie was adopted by her parents after a church member went on mission to India. They never told her much about her family, and she doesn’t really remember her life pre-Salt Lake City. But Suzie didn’t mind; she preferred shutting herself in her bedroom to work through whatever Physics textbook she’d borrowed from the library or tinker with the old computer her neighbor was going to get rid of. She was content being alone.

* Until the summer after eighth grade. That was her first summer at Camp Know Where, a “camp for tech dweebs” as Eden put it, and that was the summer she met Dustin Henderson. Suzie noticed Dustin first, when he fearlessly stood up against the two worst Camp Know Where bullies, and she was determined to talk to him. But this determination failed twice– both times, he was too engrossed in his DnD campaign to notice her– but when he finally did, they quickly became inseparable. Dustin was quick to affirm Suzie’s genius– unlike any boy she’d met before. Dustin Henderson became Suzie’s first boyfriend, and she still treasures the summer they shared: impromptu karaoke by the lake, helping him build Cerebro, and finding ingenious ways to flirt through mathematical equations.

* As planned, Suzie graduated valedictorian of her class and got a partial scholarship to her dream school: MIT. But Suzie couldn’t wait to get out of Salt Lake City, so she scored an internship with the City of Chicago’s brand new IT department. May 31st, she packed up her graduation gift– a cherry red Volkswagen Beetle from her father– and drove off into the sunset to Chicago. The first few weeks of the internship were a dream– she impressed her supervisors, and could practically taste her future in tech. But then, something happened that had never happened before: Suzie failed. One minute she was kicking ass and taking names, the next she was making stupid mistakes– mistakes that she hadn’t made since, like, fifth grade. The initiating event was a meeting with her supervisor– the older man asked her to come home with him, and when Suzie refused, he took the opportunity to explain to her why a woman could never make it in tech. After another week, Suzie was terminated from the internship site due to ‘subpar performance.’ Unwilling to go back to Utah and admit she’d failed, Suzie packed up her red Volkswagon once again and drove three hours to Hawkins, Illinois. She figured she could kill time there until she and Dustin move into MIT in the fall.

* Suzie is questioning her faith. While she believes in a higher power, maybe even God, Mormonism doesn’t make complete sense to her anymore. The first cracks appeared when she was around fourteen and had dozens of questions about evolution, creation, and historical accuracy for church leaders. When they didn’t give her satisfactory answers, Suzie’s belief in the church dwindled. Then, of course, there was the issue of Dustin. How could one of the smartest people she knows be an agnostic? And worse, how could that small fact mean she isn’t allowed to date him? Suzie put off her questioning, knowing that she couldn’t really decide anything for herself as long as she was under her father’s roof. She has a feeling she’ll walk away from the Church– and in a way, Suzie takes comfort in the fact that Eden did it first, albeit in a different way than Suzie intends to. Suzie still has a strong moral and ethical sense– she’s very sensitive to right and wrong and has a lot of residual shame and guilt from her Mormon upbringing.

* Suzie is a scientist first and a romantic second. When she isn’t studying, Suzie is reading romance novels, watching rom coms, and planning out her perfect romance, her wedding, her sweet house in the suburbs and three kids. Part of her has always hoped, despite the distance, that her great romance would be Dustin Henderson. She didn’t realize until this summer that asking for this and a career is asking for a lot. More than women are typically given.

* This summer, Suzie is working at Hawkins Public Library just to earn some cash on the side and have something to do while Dustin is at work. She’s working on digitizing the library because it’s… seen better days! Was probably last updated in 1920 or something!
