Malice Duology by Heather Walter
(Malice, Misrule)
Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss. You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily-ever-after.
Utter nonsense.
Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either. Until I met her.
Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.
But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.
Nonsense again. Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I— I am the villain.
Genres: fairytale, fantasy, romance

It's like Maleficent, but they are lesbians 💖

The princess isn't supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this darkly magical retelling of Sleeping Beauty, true love is more complicated than a simple fairy tale. Perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and Holly Black.
'Malice is the dark and wicked heart of a fairytale carved into a book. This story is beautiful, vicious magic.'
Tasha Suri, author of Empire of Sand
'A truly original and clever retelling of a classic that had me racing to the end - you'll never look at Sleeping Beauty the same again.'
S.A. Chakraborty, author of City of Brass

I just listened to the newest TMP episode and I’m one again thinking about Chester, Norris, and Colin.
Obviously Chester and Norris are on everyone’s mind being voiced my Jonny and Alex. Like we know our creators there’s no way there’s not at least a sliver of connection between these funky text to speech guys and the original Magnus Institute.
Even the first episode mentions The Magnus Institute and was voiced by Jonny oddly enough. I just think the obsession in that statement in particular and Sam’s reaction to it are very reminiscent of the original series.
Jon being the one to read the story about the institute is the first thing that jumps out, and then the one experiencing the institute being reckless and breaking so many rules of the chat board just *screams* the behavior of the first three archival assistants and their archivist. And Sam’s subsequent obsession with the story too, I mean this time it comes across as curiosity more than paranoia but that’s still so Jon of him to react in that way.
The statements read by Norris thus far just make me think of the connection even more. We all knew martin as the hopeless romantic of the two with his poetry and positive but determined outlook on the apocalypse in front of him, and to me these statements really capture that same feeling. His first statement being about doing anything to hear his lost loves voice again, even if it turned out to be a scam. Then episode three’s statement where the writer is so clearly decaying and falling away into the earth, and yet all he can focus on is when his love is coming back and when he’ll be able to see the sun again. It just feels so very Martin that both of these writers can’t help but to look for the light in their painful situations both literally and figuratively. Just. Like. Martin.
This is where Colin as a character and plot device becomes really interesting to me, because NO ONE knows as much about the computers and file system as much as he does. Admittedly, even he says it’s a shit show in there but still. If anyone is going to uncover the true origin of these voice bots or their connections to the statements it’s probably going to be him, or at least he’ll be the catalyst for it.
Even his own obsession and irritability with the app is so similar to that of Jon’s interest in the statements and entities of fear.
So my going theory is that later on, maybe by the end of the first season, there will be some connection established between Chester’s and Norris’s voice to what’s going on in the statements. Perhaps the Magnus institute will be mentioned again and Sam or Colin will find records of Jon, Martin, and the other characters from TMA. I would get even be shocked if the crew found some physical files (and the tapes ofc) which leads them to truly understand the weight of their work and the government organization itself.
Mentioning the tapes, the trope of the computers recording people like the tapes is definitely going to be a thing. Teddy not realizing his “station” is still on and recording in the first episode paired with Sam and Alyce’s faraway conversation in episode three make that very apparent to me. Hell, I wouldn’t be shocked if they cracked open a desktop and it’s just tape recorder components. It would at least explain the reason the technology is all over the place and why Jon and martins voices are contained in it. After all, the tapes followed Jon and Martin by the end of it was just completely tethered to him.
I also think Colin will be the first to die, sorry. And maybe it wouldn’t necessarily be a true death but given his attitude only three episodes in, I really do think he’ll be the first to be consumed by and/or killed by whatever the big bad is revealed to be this season.
Anyways thank for coming to my Ted talk I’ll be back next week ✌️

[I have a silly idea of Batman recruiting Crane when he was still a professor because Crane was the best on his field and he needed psychiatric knowledge to help with a particular rought case. Scarecrow is already a criminal but no one knows who he is]
Jonathan: Can't I at least go back to my office and check if it's locked? I let my computer logged at all times and a student may use it to change their grade.
*Bruce sends him a look*
Jonathan: What? It happens. I was on lockup so Jeremiah could change his grade on former professor Strange's old computer multiple times. Now I always told him "why take a class on criminal psychology if you have such a weak stomach for Hugo work tales, Miah" and he would go "well my family has this Asylum" and our grades came and his was down and he was soo scared of disapointing his family. It's one of my favorite memories really. So lil old Alyce god bless her soul saw Miah crying and me failing to confort him and she always had a soft spot for Miah so she said "you know I heard that Strange never locks his door and his computer is always logged on" and at first Miah wouldn't do it, he was afraid of getting caught, fear is a very strong motivator, but you already know that, don't you, Batman? Stricking fear on the hearth of the criminals. Anyway, the best way to fight fear it appeared was with more fear as being remembered of the fear of disapoiting his old man was all it took to overcome his fear of Strange's ire. Long story short Miah decided to go. I of course offered to help and he was "you will? But your grades are good?"" and I simply reminded him that his weren't and he was "Thank you, Jon" and we did. We keept doing it the whole semester. I have no idea how Hugo never noticed... What was my point again? Oh yeah, this things happe, Dark Knight, and I pride myself of being a fair teacher. I may have being permissive of cheating as a student but never as a professor, I love Miah but we all known he would be better off teaching or working at the hospital, maybe opening a pratice not in Arkham and he wouldn't be if I didn't help him cheat. I don't want a repetition of that.
Batman: That's certainly a nobble cause, Dr. Crane but I'm afraid-
Jonathan: Afraid! We are all afraid. Now tell me, Crussader what are you afraid off?
Batman: *suspicious* Excuse me?
Jonathan: uh... *internally: dammit Crane that was too obvious* uh... bonding exercise *internally: nice save*
Batman:... Bonding exercise?
Jonathan: Yes, to help inspire trust and calm the body during a stressfull situation. I suppose I started to harshly what about you favorite color?
Batman: I understand that situation might be scary for you but I would preffer if you refrain from bonding activities.
Jonathan: *whispering* social interations make him nervous interesting
Batman: I didn't hear you?
Jonathan: Sorry, I'm a little out of it, I suppose, you are right is merely a bit of fear, it is a rather unusual stiuation. It almost fells like visiting Gotham for the first time all over again.
Batman: I imagine you liked the experience the first time though?
Jonathan: And why is that?
Batman: Because you stayed.
Jonathan: To be honest I find Gotham absolutly terrifying. It's creepy atmosphere, the gothic architeture, the almost permanent fog in the sky, the constant bad weather *raising an eyebrow at Batman* the crime. Gotham is a place where all urban legends are true! There really is poison in the water mains and we truly have crocodiles in the sewers and clowns wanting to kill you.
Batman: Than why stay?
Jonathan: Maybe I just didn't had anywhere to come back to or maybe I just like the fear or maybe and there is the real answer here maybe I just find the people of Gotham truly fascinating. How brave they are in the mist of everything.
Batman: I suppose.
Jonathan: Suppose? *he laughs* Only in Gotham you would find an old lady who would stand up in front of a deranged serial killer like Victor Zsaas and order him to finish his target already cause he was stopping the traffic. Or a kid who face to face with local terrorist Edward Nygma dared him to solve his puzzle. Only in Gotham a man would dress up like a bat to fight crime. We don't have it anywhere else. Certainly not in Georgia! It's inspiring. It makes me wonder what are the gothamites afraid of.

My dearest friend Miss Quetzal allowed me to share our earliest of correspondences (Pt. 1):
November, 1912
Dear Miss Aderyn Starling,
I hope this letter finds you in good hands, I have been in a panic as of recent, and rushed to write. I can only pray however you shall find it well and have advice. I recently was forced to end an apprenticeship with Miss Nuthatch after an attack from the monsters recently termed as Hollowgast.
Tumblr media
MISS NUTHATCH AND I
We (the wards and I) have fled to Czechoslovakia, covering our tracks as best possible as to throw the Hollowgast off our scent. I created a loop in an abandoned apartment building.
Tumblr media
OUR LOOP
Due to the unfortunate timing, we did not have the chance to account for any of the potential troubles the loop experiences, including a infestation of roaches, and a ceiling panel that falls at 1:00 every day. We have resided in the loop for nearing four weeks now, and i have not had time to write amidst mourning for the wards killed in the attack, as well as my beloved Effie, and adjusting the children to life in this loop. I found your name amidst Miss Nuthatch’s letters (a handful of which survived) and I am writing to ask for advice in maintaining a loop. As of now, we appear to be in a safe area, but it stresses me to quell the panic of my now wards, when I barely conceal my own.
Our have resources aplenty, and our concerns do not lie with those, however, we lost three children in the attack that forced us to abandon our former beloved loop, and we are struggling to keep morale amongst those who remain.
More concerningly, I’ve found Alyce, a ward who had moved to us only weeks before the attack, to show signs reminiscent of those ymbrynic children display. However, ymbryne, demiymbryne, or whatever the case; it is unable to be decided, as she does not speak to me or the others. She is unwilling to show any bit of her powers in front of me.
By reading Effie’s notes on her wards, I’ve been able to find out more - she had lived with her parents previously, who were frightened of her odd abilities and locked her in a closet, and believed her under demonic influence. While I know it is not uncommon for peculiars to have had troubled pasts, I know not what to do with her. I can only hope you may have advice.
Sincerely, Miss Vera Quetzal

Contract Bound by Elle Mae-
From Silvia's point of view, vampires are blood sucking soul less creatures that don't give a damn about any of the humans in this world. She decided that the only way for her to live: Kill vampires and pay off her crippling debt.
Silvia was adamant about not working for blood suckers but when they came to her with the promise of erasing all her debt she couldn't say no.
Now the accomplished hunter is forced to baby sit the most dangerous vampire heir in the world. Their excuse is that humans are smart and they have finally found a way to fight back. Silvia knew as soon as she set eyes on the breathtaking heir to the vampire throne that there was more than meets the eye. She knew that what ever the human rebels had in store could not possibly be more dangerous than the person in front of her.
Can the heir teach her that not all vampires are soul less monsters? It's hard to say but one thing is for certain, the attraction between them is deadly.

A Glittering Caper: The Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick
A Glittering Caper: The Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick
Liz Bourke Tue Jan 19, 2021 1:00pm 2 Favorites [+]
M.A. Carrick is an open pseudonym for writing team Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms. Brennan’s track record needs scant introduction, with twelve books to her name—including, mostly recently, the acclaimed Memoirs of Lady Trent series and its spin-off sequel Turning Darkness into Light. Helms is perhaps less well known, though they have previously published two solo novels, 2015’s The Dragons of Heaven and 2016’s The Conclave of Shadows.
The Mask of Mirrors is the first novel to come jointly from their pens, and it reminds me strikingly of the Astreiant novels of Melissa Scott and the late Lisa A. Barnett’s Astreiant novels, albeit more in worldbuilding and tone than in characters and concerns.
Nadežra is a divided city. Once the sacred capital of the Vraszenian people, it’s now ruled by the descendents of Liganti conquerors in the form of the great houses and the delta gentry: a mercantile nobility that operates by contract and charter, and that charges the Vraszenians for access to the site of their sacred mystery. Ethnic and cultural Vraszenians form an underclass in the city, one with very restricted social mobility.
Ren is a con artist. She grew up in Nadežra, a street thief raised by a brutally manipulative con artist, and escaped with her sworn-sister Tess after believing her gang boss had killed their sworn-brother. Calling herself Renata Viraudax, she and Tess have returned to the city after years of absence, because Ren has a scheme to get herself enrolled as Nadežran nobility, with access to all the wealth and safety that class presumably has to offer: pass herself off as the daughter of House Traemontis’s long-lost and deeply unlikeable sister, seeking a reconciliation. Ren is an expert at getting people to like and believe her, and she has details of that long-lost sister at her fingertips, so she believes she has a good shot. Buy it Now
But what Ren doesn’t know is that House Traemontis’s fortunes are on the wane. There are only three members of the family left alive: matriarch Donaia, who’s holding things together by sheer force of will and effort, golden boy Leato, with a good heart and a remarkable friendship with a Vraszenian who’s reached the rank of captain in the Vigil (the city police), and Giuna, Leato’s socially-isolated younger sister. Traemontis has no allies, and powerful enemies, including Mettore Indestor—wealthy, militarily powerful, in charge of the Vigil, and holding one of the seats on the five-person council that governs the city. Ren’s attempts to con her way to safety, with Tess as her loyal maid, catapult her into the middle of intrigue, especially when she comes to feel real affection and sympathy for the Traemontis family.
As Ren is framing herself as another player on the city’s social stage, she finds herself of in the orbits of both wealthy crime-boss-turning-legitimate-businessman Derossi Vargo, who has a hidden agenda of his own—and speaks with a being that might only exist in his head, unless it’s actually a spirit in the form of his pet spider—and of Grey Serrado, the only Vraszenian captain in the Vigil, and a man who’s desperate to discover why children are dying, unable to sleep, in the poorest sections of the city. Intrigue, manoeuvring, lies, drugs, riots, and magical disasters combine in an explosive mix that may change the balance of power in Nadežra for good—and destroy Ren and Tess without a second thought.
The Mask of Mirrors gives us a rich world—a compellingly-drawn city—with a depth of history and layers of competing agendas. It has multiple different kinds of magic, from the more upper-class science of numinat and the more artisanal imbuing, to the influence of astrology and of patterning—card-reading that can reveal a person’s future, or fate. And it gives us layered, compelling characters, who’re sympathetic and understandable, and a plot that mounts with carefully-measured tension and nested capers and revelations to an explosive climax.
Spoilers ahead.
It also has a number of unanswered questions, a handful of unexplained coincidences, and some secrets and mysteries that aren’t resolved—or are not resolved satisfactorily within its pages. What’s Vargo’s real agenda? Why is he talking in his head to an invisible spirit, and how? What’s behind the Rook? Did Mettore Indestor really have a complicated, expensive, magic-based plot to carry out a form of genocide? How is it that Ren’s old gang boss is at the heart of things? How does the curse on House Traemontis also come to involve Ren herself? Though the main plot of The Mask of Mirrors reaches a resolution—this is a self-contained volume, ending with a point of equilibrium and stability, rather than with a cliffhanger—these questions linger. There’s more than enough meat for a sequel in these alone. And I hope to see one.
The Mask of Mirrors is engaging and entertaining. It’s the first novel in what feels like months (and might be mere weeks, or even days: what is time, in this age of our pandemic?) that I’ve read with an increasingly sense of delight and looked forward to being able to talk about. It’s great. I loved it. You should give it a try.

I am taking you up on that post about sending asks about your OCs
Where did Alyce learn how to cook tomatoes?
I really want some information on how ONM!Karu managed to set a watermelon on fire
Why does Alyce only know how to cook tomatoes? They are several hundred years old and are living alone. Has she been eating nothing but cooked tomatoes?
What exactly does Ava do as an archivist? what are they archiving? and for what purpose?
Wooo! Okay so:
Alyce cooking tomatoes is something that happens in the next update of 317RE (whenever in the next 3-26 months that's released). Essentially, if you go back and read you might be able to see some of the set up for that in the current chapter, Vera is.... a character, that's for sure.
Essentially, the breakfast thing is something that Ree arranges semi-regularly, it's how they filter into little roles so easily. I haven't read this fic in a while, but essentially, I think Karu usually does the cereals and fruit and yoghurt. Personally I think he just got bored and was like "hey there are like 20 watermelon here. what if i tried to light one on fire?". There are a few other elements like him trying to cook it on a stove and that one time he essentially fried it and melted it into sludge. The others were not amused.
In the TDC, there are a few ways to get meals, right? So you can either magic up something, if you're good at that sort of thing, which:
"“Yeah.” Alyce agreed quietly. They approached the food stalls. “You know, usually I don’t eat the normal food, I just enchant something up and then eat that instead. I never particularly needed to get something from someone else.”
“What, you wanted to flex your magic?” Vera teased, approaching a stand and tracing the runes for the menu.
“No- I…” Alyce paused, trying to understand her own logic. “I didn’t want to be controllable by anyone but myself. I wanted to be independent, so if everyone leaves me or hurts me, I can survive.” They went back to tracing runes. "
So essentially, there are food packages sent out on missions and such, which, if you remember here: "“Besides, most of the time when you’re on a mission, or a hunt, you end up getting a bunch of meals sent to you where they try to hide the instructions, and they also always just end up slipping little sheets of paper wrapped in foil inside your little portion of lasagna.”
This time, Valentine actually laughed. “True.”
“Sometimes you’ll take someone’s meal and then you’ll realise that they’ve sent instructions for the other guy to kill you and they’ll have your meal with similar instructions, and you’ll realise just how bored the message writers must be.”
“Once I was on a mission and they sent me a message that translated into “Bring us back some maccas” because I was in an Earth universe and they hadn’t been there for quite a few years.”
“Yep, sounds like the message writers.”"
Also Alyce is very good with a kettle and was vegetarian for a while, so they used to make pasta and cooked tomatoes and put pre-bought cheese that randomly appeared in her fridge on that, and she just ate that a bunch.
Okay so the TDC is kinda funky, in the shape that a lot of the things they do don't have a clear meaning, they're just sorta there to make sure that you don't go insane and try to conquer the world or whatever. The archivist position is to manage and save the narrations of the branches of universes they supervise. Only a very very very very very very very very very very extremely extremely so-small-it-doesn't-even-exist-on-a-chart amount of universes can actually be watched due to the rule of infinites but yeah. So, essentially, the narration that Valentine makes that sounds like the normal story goes straight to Ava. However, Ava's true significance is being one of the only people known who can access the GlRe and the only one with..... essentially admin abilities to it.
THANKS FOR THE ASK!! (What fic series are you talking about? This one.

Was there any reason behind Artair and Alyceson killing Sloan or was it a random killing?
The Murders of Katelyn Wywick and Sloan O'Dare ||| @icybreaths
Although Artair and Alyceson do frequently kill at random, Sloan's death was not random.
Firstly, you have to understand that Art is obsessed with obtaining the CasMark, as he has a fascination with magic body parts. He is also the reason my speedster, Skid Jones, has robotic legs, as Art was curious is the power comes from the person or the legs. Sadly for Art, Skid powers are Skids, not the legs, unlike the CasMark. Artair has hunted the CasMark goes back at least fours generations in Heath's family and did successfully take Heath's great-grandmother's hand, but she survived her encounter with Artair and went one to have Heath's grandmother and thus the CasMark was passed on to her and the hand that Artair obtained eventually lost it's power.
When Kat was pregnant, Artair realized he had to act quickly before the CasMark was again transferred and he managed to poison Kat a few weeks before her due date. Now Art's poisoning didn't kill Kat outright, but it made her incredibly ill that had to remain her emergency hospital care until she gave birth to Heath and his older twin sister which is what ultimately caused her.
Jump forward six years, Artair and Alyceson are able to track down where the new Keeper lives, and two, the twins are now old enough that Artair can tell which one is the Keeper, as the CasMark appears a blurry smudge that slowly develop into the symbols until it complete at seventeen.
The plan was that Artair and Alyce were going abduct Heath, and probably kill both Sloan and the other kid, cause loose ends are annoying and as a small treat to themselves. But because their both completely sadistic, and perhaps cause Alyceson doesn't entirely care too much about the CasMark, despite thinking Art will be giving it to her as he frequently refers to her as his 'prefect creation,' and also because Artair is a little gremlin and his adhd brain go brrrr when there is gore and blood and inside of body on outside, they get distracted taking out Sloan. Who, being the absolute fridge of the woman she is doesn't go down without a fight, but ultimately is bested by this deranged duo. And it was Alyce idea to make the muscle woman a literal muscle woman, delight in skinned Sloan alive.
But the prior fight was overheard by the neighbors, particularly a nosy one too who unfortunately for Heath will still be living across the street when he returns twelve years later, and it wake up a confused Heath (Apparently not his sister though. But in later years she will develop insomnia and endure her own series of traumatic experiences, so that makes up for sleeping through this one.) So the neighbor, though not investigating calls the police and Heath after listening terrified upstairs until he musters the courage to see what is actually happening downstairs only to find Artair and Alyce finishing up before the sound of sirens and flashing red and blue causes them to make a hasty get away.
Still the sight of Sloan like that and Artair's hideous rictus grin were scarred into Heath's psyche
thanks for the ask @icybreaths hope the info didn't scar you like it did baby Heath!
