#always thinking abt that thing that was like 'do the british not know what children are' sadjksadh
[Liar Liar] you can lie about anything in your life. except for your boyfriend ft. Miya Osamu
wc: 800
warnings/content: silly reader, fluff i guess?
noos's notes: thinking abt writing a version of this for Iwa but reader says "my boyfriend is a trainer for olympians." and acquaintance shuts the fuck up
“Stop shaking yer leg, annoyin’” Osamu says.
You shoot him a glare, but your leg continues to bob, a habit when you're anxious. You’re about to shoot a nasty comment back, but it’s then that your lunch plans arrive.
Your acquaintance from high school; you’ve always been competitive but something about her brings out the petty in you. When she had reached out to catch up, your boyfriend asked if he could come along to meet your friend. You agreed.
It’s been almost 10 years out of high school, but you feel the irrational urge to show that you’re successful and happy with your life.
When she shows up, her tall, rich-looking boyfriend by her side, you’re glad you brought Osamu along.
“So how have you been?” she asks when she settles into the seat across from you.
The boys introduce themselves and four of you play catch up.
“What have you been up to? My boyfriend and I love to hit the gym after work together. You know, to stay fit!” she punctuates the sentence with a giggle and coy look at her boyfriend.
You pinch your face, “Yeah, I wake up at 5 everyday to go to the gym, too! I love to go… lift!”
You get up exactly at 8:54 am everyday because that’s the absolute latest you can afford to get up to start your 9AM work-from-home job.
You feel Osamu’s eyes bore into you from your left. His hands come over your shaking thigh in a warning squeeze.
And so lunch goes much the same way. She pulls, you push.
“I do so much great work at my job working with children and such!” she says.
“Yeah, totally get the whole making a difference thing. My role really supports the success of my company!”
You work in accounting at a regular corporation.
“I love to volunteer at the senior home on the weekend. All the people there are so lonely but sweet!”
“Totally, I go to the soup kitchen every Saturday to serve… soup.”
You sleep in on the weekends while Osamu cleans the house.
“I recently joined a book club and we’ve recently read The Feminine Mystique. It was so rewarding to be with like-minded girl bosses!”
“That’s soo inspirational of you! I’ve recently read The… Communist Manifesto. You know, the failure of free markets and all that.”
You watch the Great British Bake Off in bed every night.
You glance over to see Osamu practically shaking in laughter. He has his mug up to his face to hide the guffaws and you want to smack him in the head.
“That’s amazing! Well enough about us, what about your boyfriend? Mine works in investment banking. He’s such a hard worker. One of a kind, babe” she says, resting a french-manicured hand on her boyfriend’s bicep.
“Osamu-”
You pause, not sure how to go about this. There’s a lot of silence as you close your mouth and look down.
“I own a restaurant,” Osamu finally answers for you.
Osamu’s hand has left your thigh and he was no longer laughing. He didn’t sound very happy either. You wrap up your lunch, Osamu mostly sitting in silence for the remainder of the meal. You say your goodbyes before long and you and Osamu make your way home to your shared apartment.
At home, Osamu is uncharacteristically pouty for the rest of the day.
“What’s with the attitude?” you prod. He’s probably just hungry or something.
“Oh, attitude,” he mocks. “Is that why ya had nothing good to say about me at lunch? Because I’m embarrassing to yer perfect life ya want people to think ya have?”
You flinch a little. In truth, you had been feeling a little guilty about that.
“‘Samuuu,” you whine.
You sidle up to your boyfriend, who leans away from you. He’s putting on a dramatic pout, but you can tell he's hurt.
“‘Samu,” you cup his puffed cheeks in your hands. “I didn't wanna say anything about you because I was lying about everything else and I didn't want you to think the stuff I say about you is a lie. I wanted to say that you’re my buff, hot, cooking, Onigiri man. You have your own successful business, you're kind and thoughtful, and you have the hottest dad bod ever.”
Osamu scoffs, “lying. Understatement.” But you can see the corner of his lips upturning. One more push.
“And I love youuuuu,” you pinch his cheeks.
Osamu lifts you by the thighs and you wrap your legs and arms around him. “Well you better tell yer friend all that stuff ya just said about me next time. Don’t want her thinking her investment banking boyfriend has a one-up on me.”
“Hell no, I’m never seeing her again.”

(i’m only doing dracula secondhand rn, although i have read it ever, and i’m delighted that everyone’s having fun but i gotta say, the inevitable way in which the usual tumblr discourse is starting to creep in around the edges as people belatedly discover that the text is, gasp, Problematic is—a lil exhausting 2 me? like. of course the text is Problematic. maybe tumblr book club can do wilkie collins next and really have fits. like. what kinds of things did you expect a victorian-era brit* to position as scary??
and like. not fair of me, probably. people don’t know shit and it’s good they’re learning and it’s always good to contemplate and analyze things! but at the same time it just feels a little like—are you going anywhere with these announcements of Orientalist Spectres Haunting Europe, etc? or are you just having fits abt having made contact with something Impure, and trying to expiate yr sins by squawking about it?
like. idk. i love analysis! but some of the posts i’ve seen starting to float around just feel like. halfway between Baby’s First High School English Essay (That Doesn’t Really Have a Thesis, Just Descriptions of What’s Happening in the Text) and, like, scrupulosity? like. tell me something about all the fucked-up fears stoker is leveraging here! make an argument! just announcing that these things exist in the text feels like. no shit. so glad we could crowdsource a second sparknotes (now with more guilt!) right here on tumblr dot edu, so we don’t have to look anything up.
idk, i’m having trouble articulating exactly what’s alienating me about this, and i do realize i’m probably being excessively irritable! really i think it’s just like, i desperately want a mode of reaction to media—to the world, really—that’s more complex than either ‘shhh, i’m averting my eyes from anything troubling abt this bc Capitalism Has Worn Me Down and now i’m too depressed and exhausted to engage with anything in a way that isn’t purely escapist,’ or else ‘i’m going to enumerate all the -isms that Taint this narrative, in a way that strongly suggests i’d prefer some kind of ahistorically, implausibly sanitized version of it so i was spared the necessity of confronting anything real or difficult, and could revert back to the aforementioned eyes-averted escapist mode without being Tainted by Associating With Problematic Narratives I Failed to Denounce As Is Proper…’
that’s a lot of words and not a lot of clarity, but basically: there has to be a more generative mode of engagement somewhere, somehow, that isn’t just this facile binary in which we either spit something out immediately, like reactive children, or else swallow it whole! i want to chew on stuff, and build muscle.)
⸻
* it has been pointed out in the comments, and i agree, that this is an oversimplifying elision—stoker was, yes, british, but more specifically irish (which i did know, but didn’t say), and while really this phrasing was an attempt to gesture at the way in which brit-ish orientalist anxieties are activated in the text, not compress stoker into an uncomplicatedly imperialist boogeyman, it’s still a reductive description! like. ‘colonized artist leans into colonizer anxieties, aligns self as sympathetic narrator with Correct Worldview at expense of more-othered Foreigners’ is still not an especially innovative analysis, but it does at least immediately bump the complexity of our model from binary to trinary—a complication devoutly to be wished, under the circs!

Reading extensively between the lines I have concluded, that Thomas Nightingale is a feral being just acting sophisticated to insinuate himself into human society as he must. But the feral is very close beneath the surface, and that is such a good way for him to be

wuxia/xianxia: a loose and somewhat second-hand introduction to the genre, pt1
Sorry for the unconventional q, but i keep seeing Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation everywhere and I kinda want to get into it but a) don't know where to start (web series? live action adaptation?? wait how many are there!) and b) i don't really "get" wuxia / xianxia, that sorta stuff, i find it really hard to cross that cultural barrier and chinese mentality seems very alien. (it's not that i have no experience w different mentalities but chinese in particular is v hard to grasp w/o sources).
So if you have the time and patience, I'd love to hear a summary of it (like, a coherent summary bc all i get on the wikis is a shower of names and concepts that don't make sense to me) and perhaps some "intro for dummies" abt the relevant parts of chinese history and mentality tied to it? not just the cultivation / buddhist part but also re: familial relationships, philosophy and all that. (v brief and low effort of course) Thank you and sorry for bothering you!
("brief and low effort" referring to what I'm asking from you, not to what I need for me - as in i asked for it so i'm more than ready for a complicated essay, but you can write with as much detail as you like, I don't want to ask for some sort of comprehensive tome)
Okay first, you do realize that if you want “brief and low” for anything, you’re asking the wrong person? I was a philosophy major. brief got drilled out of me a long time ago.
Second... well, explaining what makes The Untamed / Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (mdzs for short, from the chinese title, Mo Dao Zu Shi) such a standout story does require understanding some of the wuxia conventions it subverts -- as well as some that it plays straight (so to speak) very, very well.
I figure the best approach (again, sadly not brief) is to first get a handle on the genre of wuxia. Gonna break this post into two, so you’re not reading in a single three-hour stretch or something. I’ll do a follow-up about mdzs, to hopefully make it a bit more accessible for you.
before I do that, let me first say: I didn’t grow up with this genre, so there’s going to be parts that I may miscast unintentionally. for an insider’s view, my go-to voices are @guzhuangheaven, @atthewaterside, @dramatic-gwynne, @the50-person and @drunkensword. if any of them are reading this and can point to more/other/better voices, please do.
I have three analogies -- like cultural doorways -- and like all analogies, they break down when you get into the finer details. In the broad strokes, though, they mostly work, and if nothing else, hopefully they’ll demonstrate that wuxia may be a chinese-specific version, but part of a storytelling tradition that’s nearly universal.
The three doorways are: the american wild west, the samurai era, and the british arthurian romances. And, in a tangential way, the regency period in the romance genre.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
The term ‘wuxia’ can be translated several ways, but I prefer ‘martial chivalry’. Most wuxia takes place in the jianghu, a harder term to unpack. Generally, though, ‘the jianghu’ has connotations not all that different from what americans mean when they reference the wild west.
More of a concept than a physical place, the jianghu (like the ‘wild’ west) exists beyond the reach of the law and/or civilization. It’s occupied by a diverse cast of farmers, merchants, beggars, and so on, but also by outlaws, gangs, hermits, pretty much all those who don’t like the suffocating nature of the civilized world, for whatever reason. It’s not a lawless place (except to outsiders); it does have laws, but those are only unto itself.
So, jianghu is a world to itself, for the most part -- which also makes it kind of timeless. Tang dynasty, Song dynasty, Ming dynasty, it could be any of them and all of them and none of them. Just as the heyday of the cowboys and the cattle drives was barely a decade long, a culture’s romanticized history stretches into lifetimes that exist separate from any date you could pin down on a calendar.
The average wuxia protagonist would fit in reasonably well as knight errants in an arthurian romance, with one important detail in difference: they’re rarely aristocrats. Wuxia protagonists are just as likely (if not more so) to be lower-born, whether the child of farmers, or servants, some common caste.
This is where wuxia diverges from the british and japanese traditions, which have a bit more noblesse oblige going on (knights and samurai both being upper-class types). Even ‘aristocratic’ characters tend to be so only within the jianghu -- sort of like the way a territory’s elected leader in the wild west would’ve had no pull in Washington, given they weren’t from a fully-recognized state.
Wuxia does often have politics, between competing sects (think schools of learning), but that political infighting is independent of the capital’s rules or wishes. A lot of stories -- in the rare cases the topic even comes up -- tends to speak of ‘the capital’ in disparaging terms.
That’s not to say wuxia is all about the flat social systems (it’s definitely not), but most commonly a rank implies some level of competence/study. The title of sect leader isn’t granted, it's earned. Children inherit, but it’s also a common storyline to have an heir with no skills (who then goes through all the trials and tribulations to finally level up and earn that position in turn).
What makes wuxia hard to grasp is its vernacular: the conventions that form the backbone that make something recognizably ‘wuxia’ and not just ‘historical drama set on a frontier in a loosely-defined time period’.
Frex: in a Wild West story, convention is two gunfighters at opposite ends of the street, and at least one of them is wearing a holster tied to his leg with string in a way that no real gunfighter wore, ever, but Hollywood came up with the idea and now it’s a permanent part of our imagination. In the arthurian romances, convention is carrying the token of one’s lady love (a distant, untouchable figure who rarely appears on-page), or meeting the unnamed knight in black on the jousting field. Convention are the samurai who’ll die for their lord’s honor, always touchy and prickly at the first sign of disrespect.
These are things granted the most remarkable gravity, that to an outsider might seem ridiculous. (Why is there always tumbleweed?)
Now, wuxia is the latest evolution in a long-lived literary tradition (and by ‘long’ I mean like 2000+ years) -- but like any living tradition, each subsequent generation reinvents it for their time. Part of that reinvention comes from particularly influential writers, who put their own spin on things, and their interpretation becomes the next generation’s standard for the genre -- “of course wuxia must have X” or “a protagonist never does Y”. (Like how Tolkien almost single-handedly changed western concepts of elves, in fiction.)
And here’s where I explain what regency romance has to do with it. Another short-lived period, in real history, but along came Georgette Heyer, who took bits and pieces of actual research, blended them with her reactionary politics, exaggerating some things and ignoring other things completely. The result is a time-that-never-was, but she cast (and still casts) a shadow so vast that I’ve seen multiple romance writers complain that readers will see a footnoted-and-researched version as wrong, if it contradicts one of Heyer’s made-up conventions.
Modern wuxia has its own Heyer-sized influencers -- like Jin Yong (the Condor trilogy, Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils), Wen Rui'an (The Four), Gu Long (The Legend of Flying Daggers, The Proud Twins), to name a few of the biggest. If you have a chance or are inclined, the big names get remade on a pretty regular basis, and catching one will at least let you see some ur-tropes in action.
But it also means that you can’t really extrapolate, in the sense of saying, “in wuxia, people do X, ergo, X is also a factor in Chinese culture.” It’s like... take any western made in the 50s, and the vernacular is simple. The bad guys wear black hats, the good guys wear white hats, the prostitutes wear bright-colored dresses with frills and the good women wear subdued colors buttoned up to their neck. It told an audience exactly what character filled what role, but that’d tell you zero about real people you might meet in Nebraska or Utah, let alone New York City.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Almost forgot: xianxia is basically wuxia but with ‘immortal heroes’ -- so there’s gods, divine influences, non-human beings as characters (main or NPC), etc. (Btw, by ‘immortal’ I mean exactly that, like this character is six hundred years old, that one’s a thousand years old, etc.) You can think of xianxia as wuxia, but amped way up on the mystical scale.
Xianxia will sometimes take place on earth (jianghu) but sometimes in the celestial realm (heaven). Or a mix of both, like stories where a character falls (or is banished, or defects) from heaven and has to go through various trials and tribulations as a mortal human in order to regain a power, rise in rank, fall in love, or whatever their goal is.
A number of wuxia stories are driven by some sort of mcguffin, but in xianxia, the mcguffin is more likely to be a powerful spiritual weapon. But I can also think of a number of wuxia in which the mcguffin would fit right in, in xianxia (some near-mystical thing with significant positive, or negative, power independent of the wielder, which often amplifies or boosts the wielder to an inhuman degree, etc).
Thing is, the mcguffin being divine/infernal supernatural isn’t enough alone to make the story xianxia. I’m pretty sure you need non-human or super-human immortals and/or creatures to be considered in the xianxia genre.

here are my comprehensive thoughts on bly manor that i have been writing since midway through my watch of the show in case anyone wants 2 hear my thoughts
victoria pedretti’s voice alone makes me want to nut unironically. combo w everything else and she is literally god. knew this from hill house but now she’s blond + playing a lezzie so that amps it all up by 500.
speaking of have so much love in my heart for miss dani clayton. she just wants to help children and is so caring and kind like ok wife? her adorable fake british accent. cannot make tea or coffee. i’m going to call the FUCKING police. determined walk run. tucked in shirt. comp het + internalized homophobia. just so brave and selfless. she has it all. would marry her in half a second.
and the absolute DEDICATION of her stomping on out after flora when viola just almost choked her to death. i’m literally on my knees proposing right now.
flora is so fucking cute absolutely love her would die for her immediately. also sometimes she is creepy and i am very scared of her. duality.
did not enjoy the jump scare w edwin or edward or whatever the fuck mr hetero’s name was i don’t remember. not the car scene like when dani turns around and sees him behind her and then he goes flying back into the mansion. anyway i get he had his heart broken but do not feel good abt how he was basically trying to force dani into marriage by constantly asking her until she said yes. like of course she’s going to eventually give in even if she didn’t want to when he was clearly not going to stop and if she said no instead of pushing it off she would lose basically everyone she considered to be her family. and then when she tells him that she can’t love him romantically he’s like fuck you dani ok homophobe. perhaps i’m glad he got hit by a truck ❤️
immediately noticed smth was up w hannah from the second she wouldn’t eat and i was like oh ok so she’s a ghost. her ep was SO confusing though until the end i was like what the fuck is going on here 😩 anyway hate to be right but. fuck peter quint.
same thing w miles i was like what the FUCK is wrong w this kid and then i was like oh he’s possessed then oh he’s possessed by peter quint in like. ep 2. once again hate to be right. fuck peter quint. also prior to watching the show i rarely saw anything abt miles and i was like why does everyone only talk abt flora? now i get it.
jamie is just so fucking sexy. like the lesbian energy off of her is unreal and smth that you don’t get too often w lesbians on tv. either amelia eve is a dyke or she somehow knows exactly how to emulate them bc truly unreal. only wish is that she didn’t wear makeup but we can’t have it all can we. also cannot stop thinking of her as a mechanic every time she’s wearing that like jump suit and god that would be so fucking sexy i......anyway love her w my whole heart.
speaking of how much i love jamie....the way that she acts all tough and a little cold while she is actually the most empathetic person and somehow knows exactly what to say to anyone when they’re having a rough moment and she won’t sugar coat it either but it’s bc she cares and understands so deeply that it’s ok.....wow. wife?
wish we could’ve gotten to know rebecca more outside of just her relationship w peter. i feel like that did her a major injustice. we practically saw none of her relationship w the kids and it seemed to me like they were trying to imply in the beginning that flora had been very close w rebeccca and i feel like we didn’t see that. felt like rebecca ended up mostly being a prop for peter’s story which was unfortunate considering she was such a great character. and did NOT get why she was so hung up on him either like oh he SEES me after one convo? he was also a dick like immediately after like....once again feels like a disservice that they had her be in love w peter based off of like nothing. like all of a sudden all her ambition is gone and she just wants to b w peter? lol ok.
charlotte cheating on her husband w his brother the absolute mind. fucking hilarious. thought he was jealous at the birth scene or that flora might be his but i was like no no way he probably just has a thing for her. but she is way too attractive for her husband anyway. do not condone cheating but she’s a milf so i let it slide. also flora actually being henry’s hilarious. fucking love this drama. had me rolling. “do you love him?” [silence] LMFAO. and dom’s (got his name!) fucking smack down on henry holy shitttttt will b taking some notes for next time i’d like to turn someone suicidal on fucking god.
i know it was the best vehicle for telling the story but tbh the dream hopping got SO exhausting for me after a while. i just did not enjoy that format. i’m already not one for flashbacks even in this context bc i want to know what’s going to happen next in the main story rather than what happened to get here since i know where it’s going and i just found this to be even more confusing and a little frustrating and incredibly hard to follow. but that’s just my personal taste i wouldn’t objectively say it made the show bad or anything. i think it was also bc all of the twists were unfortunately very obvious so the long drawn out explanations were like. thank u u could’ve said this in five mins instead bc i already knew this. felt like some of the dream scenes were pointless and could’ve been replaced w some better scenes.
flashback ep w viola was ok. kate siegel is so hot obviously but. once again felt extremely extended past the point it had to be. the repition of sleep wake walk was SO annoying like thank u i got it. but i was always a lot more interested in what was happening current day than in the past so once again this was just whatever for me. but good on viola’s hot sister for taking her out have to do what u have to do u know! did enjoy viola killing her back. just thought it was funny.
and how can i even express in words how i felt abt dani and jamie’s relationship? watching the scene where they first kiss literally put me to tears and i just had a real moment w it. and just in general the way that they open up to each other is just so incredible and how jamie makes dani feel so seen that dani literally can’t resist kissing her makes me just. cant put it into words. their relationship really encapsulates what is so beautiful abt lesbianism and that means so much to me truly. will probably make a whole post abt it tomorrow.
ok so in conclusion: i wanted more present day stuff instead of flashbacks. i feel like there was a LOT more creepy shit they could have done in the house and they just. didnt. also wanted to see more of owen in general but also hannah and owen’s relationship and jamie and dani’s relationship. felt like peter and rebecca got practically more screen time than jamie and dani did despite them being the main couple. felt like character & relationships wise there was a lot left unsaid. like yes the plot was finished with a neat bow but i don’t think most of the characters were done justice in the end. and speaking of which i don’t think the sad ending was necessary. do not see a single reason as to why dani needed to die. i feel like they felt it needed a sad ending and that’s why they killed her rather than it actually making sense. like girl get an exorcist. overall the whole thing felt more like an outline for a show that needed to be fleshed out rather than an actual finished show. perhaps could have benefitted from a few more eps maybe. but also. FUCK peter quint.

whats going on with this x of swords event? i didnt read it! im ok with spoilers btw
HSJWJEJD HONESTLY ANON I HAVE NO IDEA
okie here's my attempt at a synopsis; krakoa, the cult island mutants are currently residing on wasn't always just krakoa; it had an other half called arakko or smth like that idk. then apocalypse came with a sword, had a fight and then Sliced™ the island in half. krakoa kinda vibed by themself and was sad while arakko... went to hell. or something. with a bunch of evil mutant demons on it. however unfortunately that also included apocalypse's wife n kid so that is an Oof.
the citizens of arakko were understandably not cool w/ this. it took them a crazy long time but eventually they made a Rift™ (which i think was caused by another thing but i don't remember what it was so uh. yeah dhsndjd) and started to invade Otherworld! this is where opal luna saturnyne lives and yes that is her real name! she looks exactly like emma except she covers up her tits more so if you see a woman who looks like her but with a cloak and long dress and a weird purple necklace thing that's her. this place is Important™ as this is where the starlight citadel is, the center of the multiverse!
(obviously following the events of secret wars... idk actually how this place is still around like i??? hwhshdhd???? but its there and i don't think anyone is mentioning the multiverse going boom in detail bc that would involve a Lot™ and really who as the time but still i have questions like? multiverse is back but its not the same multiverse so i??? anyway that's not what this is about jsnshd)
anyway if arakko gets there they can destroy Time And Space (again) which is obviously. bad. the quiet council on krakoa after learning abt this basically decide "hey if we get the two islands together again things will maybe be ok! :)" or whatever bc apparently krakoa is Yearning™ and so is arakko n whatever that is a bullshit excuse we're going with to make this happen. they try to do it peacefully but one of apocalypse's children who i imagine is still kinda pissed about being locked in evil mutant hell betrays and stabs him. that sucks. he almost dies.
anyway that happens and then??? opal decided "hey you know what would make this better?? swords!" or smth idk at this point i stopped paying attention but yeah! 10 krakoa n 10 of arakko must get some swords and duel! for a bit they go off and get their swords bc opal couldn't stop at the swords she had to make riddles to get them to get the swords. it's a long ordeal but in the end we have our team; kid cable, logan, ororo, magik, apocalypse, gorgon, brain braddock and betsy braddock, and doug! and technically warlock but in this scenario he is a sword so :) idk if he counts properly.
anyway off they go on their weird convoluted quest to go save the island and the world or whatever. i'll try and keep breezy on the details but basically apocalypse meets up with his wife, doug marries the woman he was supposed to duel (he can't speak w/ her either which is weird like bro if he can talk to an ISLAND he can talk to a woman who speaks weird like that's his wholeass power-), ororo does a fashion show, also stabs the horseman of death in the gut, logan almost drowns in sand, betsy gets shattered like motherfucking glass, opal wants to get with brian but he is married and generally not interested so that is an f. they also steal her sword which is called the starlight sword or something it's important anyway. shit happens and uh yeah. also kid cable gets the shit beaten out of him. he gets upset and calls for his Mommy™ who hears and gets upset.
idk really what happens here but things kinda go to shit. anyway basically there's a cool final battle and bc jean heard cable they basically all started showing up sans the quiet council bc they're a government they have to stay. there's a fight for a bit doug almost says "i love you" to his wife's face which is kinda sweet tbh but like bro she can't understand you i don't think she cares but anyway yeah. she joins krakoa forces, n so does another arakko swordsperson, and another guy just straight up dips and leaves the battle. shit is going down cable's sword is a key???? anyway it's kinda close and then,,, apocalypse merges with his wife's evil persona???? becomes "annihilation" surrenders to arakko or something opal comes down on a bigass dragon is like "oh cool" gets rid of the evil persona and thats it? she decides that from krakoa should go to arakko n apocalypse who assumedly wants to get pegged again by his wife for the first time in literal millenia offers himself up. she's like "yeah cool" and thats... it. doug goes off with wife opal feels sad bc she didn't get brain's s*xy british ass and its implied that if he slept with her this entire thing could have been avoided 😁
anyway uh. yeah. that's my unprofessional synopsis of x of swords. tbh i missed a bunch of issues because i wasn't that invested in it so like. hwnsjhshd there are Gaps in my knowledge but i hope this helps but i completely understand if this just makes you more confused sjejeudhsh

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT / ALWAYS ACCEPTING.
@strnza asked : talk abt john price’s relationship with empathy!
it’s important to note, before anything else, that john has changed and adapted massively in the 18 years he’s been with the british army / sas. when he was assigned the role of captain in 2011 is when that change became most noticeable. equally, in any role in the sas, you require clarity and the ability to think on your feet. you have to make decisions no man should ever have to make and you have to make them without hesitation. price had plenty of time to learn and experience this.
a witness to what can happen when things aren’t done quick enough and he’s also been the one who’s not reacted quick enough. it only ever takes one mistake, one slip-up for you to never let that happen again. price is one of the sas’ best soldiers. he’s harnessed himself in a way that outside enemy lines he’s able to distribute certain behaviours and traits but the second he crosses into a mission, everything except the necessary is restrained and shut off. this includes empathy. a primary example of his empathy being tested is in the scene where he has to sacrifice the hostage with a vest on in order to save the several other hostages in the room, all the while this hostage is begging to see his little girls and family - to go home safely. kyle, who is also in this scene, helps us spot the difference, because had price not been there ? kyle would’ve allowed that hostage to kill everyone and even himself. he hadn’t harnessed his empathy enough to make that decision, that sacrifice, which is why price stepped in.
every day price has to make decisions like this and if he allowed himself to hold onto them, if he didn’t accept and move on he’d never sleep. we get dirty and the world stays clean - that’s the mission. every mission is a numbers game, if the death of one person means the survival of ten then it is a worthwhile sacrifice. entering a room occupied with combatants is the same - all with AK47′s that they’d spray upwards wildly for the head but if he were to enter crouched then it’d be unlikely he’d be hit and if he was then his team was on his back in seconds.
you could not involve emotion, you couldn’t empathize, even when leading a child past the dead or taking out a mother guarding her child that is firing a weapon. it was about awareness, control and action. men trained to get the job done, no matter the cost. if you hesitated upon seeing a pregnant woman in a vest, you’d be dead. if you hesitated as a child aimed a weapon at you, you’d be dead. IF YOU HESITATE, IF YOU EMPATHIZE OR YOU LOSE YOUR CONTROL, YOU ARE DEAD.
and if he or his team is dead, then no one gets out alive.
however, this isn’t to say price wouldn’t save a hostage if he had time and more lives weren’t threatened. he’s disarmed vests, carried children to wailing parents and put himself between enemy and ally. but this has nothing to do with empathy. it’s about tactical foresight, about weighing odds and he has been trained to identify those precious seconds of potential. to judge if the time is right or wrong.
during his mission to secure the wolf, he’s faced with a test where the butcher demands for a door to be opened for AQ to pour in at the embassy otherwise a child and his father will be shot. if price had allowed the door to be opened, the butcher would’ve killed everyone regardless. and if not ? only the child and father would die. calculated risks and unbreakable focus - a member of the embassy assumes price and kyle are there to evacuate and rescue them and the others but is merely told to lock the doors and barricade the windows. price then has to leave those people behind, knowing it’s highly likely they’re all going to die because they have to get to the wolf otherwise even more people will die if he escapes.
there was a time where price had to accept that he is only one man with two hands and a handful of men. he isn’t here to be a hero or to save the world. he’s here to get the job done, reduce the potential number of casualties and to eliminate the ones who threaten the present.

AISLINN INFO DROP !
language
she was born in southern ireland and has spent most of her life in southern ireland. her accent is definitely southern irish.
she went to a gaelscoil primary school ; a school where the primary language is GAELIC.
irish gaelic is technically her first language but she is totally bilingual. she spoke + was spoken to in gaelic until her ma died , then english when they moved in with trish. the other schools she has attended were a mixture of irish and english speaking.
as soon as she was prescribed hearing aids , her pa was extremely keen for the two of them to learn sign language ( he himself is hard of hearing in one ear but never learnt ). since she was six , the two of them have taken free isl classes and are both fluent. aislinn has also taught herself the alphabet in bsl and asl , as well as some other basic phrases. but she can sign and read her alphabets REALLY FAST. like , often too fast for fluent speakers to read and they’ll have to ask her to slow down.
she and her pa talk to each other in equal measures gaelic , english and isl depending on the situation. there’s not one she prefers over the others.
autism / ocd
aislinn was diagnosed with autism when she was six. she went to school a little later than most children and had trouble from the start. disrupting classes ; fighting with other children.
she struggles to understand other people her age , mostly. feels separated from those around her because her background & lifestyle is so different. she’s always struggled to make friends.
BUT if she sees something similar to herself in another , she will latch onto them very quickly. likes the idea of being part of a group of outcasts.
she has a very bad temper. long fuse , but big explosion. she’ll either totally shut down ; usually ball herself up in a corner and refuse to talk , or she lashes out. she has been in a lot of fights at schools ( that she always lost ). only ever with other kids though ; she isn’t afraid to SCREAM at adults when she thinks they’re wrong.
she also has ocd which was diagnosed when she was 13. HOWEVER she took this to mean that because she has ocd , she is not autistic. she’s never embraced her autism ( having spent several years of her childhood being told by the female role model in her household that it made her stupid and the school attitude that ‘ autistic kids are trouble kids ’ ) ; instead insisting that her ocd is what’s ‘ broken her brain ’. she has !!! a lot of internalised hate over her neurodivergence >:(
she is hypersensitive to touch + sound. especially shrill noises.
sound :
when she first went to school , she found the noise level of other children extremely difficult to cope with ( even when she was older it sometimes can cause panic attacks ).
her hearing loss was pretty much a direct result of this. to make things QUIETER she would fill up her ears with crayons ; glue ; anything. they got very badly infected as a result.
she has mild hearing loss in her left ear ( can hear normal voice level just fine ; cannot hear softer / distant sounds ) and moderate / severe hearing loss in her right ( loud sounds like traffic are extremely muffled ).
she has been prescribed and given hearing aids multiple times but does not like wearing them —— prefers it to be quiet. wears the right one maybe 50% of the time and ONLY EVER wears the left one alone in the car with dad ( takes both out when she’s angry with him ).
touch :
she loves to touch other people. always shakes hands in greeting ( and is uncomfortable if people don’t want to ) , loves to touch others’ hair or sit with knees touching.
she also touches everything in supermarkets and other big shops —— especially if it looks soft. her fingers / hands aren’t actually super sensitive so she finds it a comforting reality.
she finds uncomfortable clothing awful and has always hated school uniform and would often scratch herself to bleeding around her neck , stomach and on her arms.
her dad used to find her ‘ fairy ’ shells / flowers / stones that would give her ‘ magic protection ’ and stop her scratching ( it’s something her ma started ; gave her a seashell necklace made by fairies that would always keep her safe ). and ... they actually worked , to an extent. didn’t make it any more comfortable , but eased the obsessive need to scratch a little.
she still wears quite a lot of them as necklaces. cant stand bracelets , or more than one ring per hand , but is always wearing at LEAST four necklaces ( in even numbers ).
nearly all her clothing she’s either had for a very long time or she gets second hand. her clothes have to be pre - worn and SOFT. shoes and socks are exceptions.
she suffers from trichotillomania —— the obsessive need to pull out her hair. it started when she was around 10 , partly from the anxiety of moving schools and everything changing.
she’s kept her hair very SHORT since then ; between shoulder length and ( a couple of times ) totally shaved. it’s probably the thing her pa struggles most to help her with.
things they’ve done to try and combat it include : she always has a teddy bear or soft toy that’s FLUFFY so she can tear that out instead ; getting out every couple of hours on long journeys to tear up handfuls of grass ; keeping her hair braided or full of clips / flowers / other things she can fiddle with ; letting her shave her hair instead of pulling it ( and also then it’s not a sensory issue around her neck / face ).
the one that’s been MOST SUCCESSFUL is to keep her hair dyed. she’s been doing it since she was 12 and has been just about every colour under the sun. it helps in a couple of ways : firstly , because she really likes the look and idea of it , so tries her hardest to keep it intact. secondly because she often doesn’t REALISE she’s pulling out hair , but when it’s pink or blue it’s easier to notice when her hands are full of it and she can stop.
gender
y’all ... aislinn is 18 years old and super confused in general about both her gender and her sexuality. she’s has fairly limited interaction with people her own age and very little experience on the internet. she also lives in southern ireland. some of her views and knowledge is skewed and misinformed. she’s had very few female role models and even fewer queer ones.
nearly everything she knows about sex , gender , and sexuality is what she can talk about with her dad ( they’re best friends they talk about anything and everything openly ). he is surprisingly well educated about all of the above , but still she’s nowhere near as knowledgeable as an ordinary british 18 year old would be.
she doesn’t experience dysphoria but something doesn’t feel quite RIGHT inside her. she’s not sure if that’s because of her gender , or her neurodivergence , or anything else , but the only way she can think of to figure that out is to try out labels.
the one good thing about moving around a lot is she’s had a lot of opportunities to restart with a NEW identity. she’s tried using they / them pronouns , she’s spent a couple of months with a buzz - cut going by ‘ jack ’ and using he / him , she’s tried calling herself non - binary and given up very quickly trying out other pronouns ( unable to cope with the frustration of people refusing to use them ). but none of them felt any BETTER than she / her.
it’s not really that she feels like she’s anything instead of female ; there’s nothing that feels more right , she just doesn’t really feel CONNECTED to being a girl.
at the moment she uses she / her pronouns and the label demigirl. she’s not totally sure about it , but she finds it helpful to use a bunch of different labels until she finds the right one rather than wait and remain label - less until she’s TOTALLY sure.
sexuality + sexual experiences
y’all guessed it she’s pretty confused abt this too !
what she is most certain about is that she is a lesbian. she’s done sexual stuff with a guy once and Did Not Enjoy. she’s never found a guy attractive ; she’s not had a crush on a guy.
asexuality is something she’s felt comfortable labelling herself with for a couple of years , but she’s still not totally sure if she actually IS asexual because , like ... she does feel like she is sexually attracted to some women. thing is that it’s only celebs ( and almost excusively much older women as well ) ; she’s never even had a crush on someone she’s known in real life. so while the idea of doing sexual stuff with a hot celeb seems appealing , she hasn’t enjoyed any of her real life sexual experiences so it’s like. is this false hope ?? has she just had bad experiences or is she actually asexual ???
which is the reason she calls herself ‘ quoiromantic ’. finds it difficult to distinguish between platonic , romantic , and sexual attraction. honestly tldr is she’s muddled about this and while she doesn’t know What she’s feeling , it’s nice to have a label that fits her confusion.
unsurprisingly , she is a virgin. she’s had a handful of sexual experiences of various sorts ( a few with guys ; mostly with female - presenting people ) + a couple more teen kisses outside of that , but she’s never had a relationship and never been any further.
she is still questioning and that’s ok. she thinks she’s a lesbian but still kisses boys sometimes. she thinks she’s ace but still is vaguely sexually active. she’s not sure , so she’s still experimenting. and that’s all ok ok !!!
random
it’s pronounced ‘ ASH - LING ’.
she is an excellent swimmer and can hold her breath for nearly two minutes.
she ‘ ran away ’ quite a lot as a little kid but only ever to mcdonalds. it would only ever end in pa coming to find her and them eating chips & carrot sticks on the walk home.
her parents weren’t married when she was born ( mostly because they didn’t have the money to ). they got married when she was nearly four years old.
she loves dogs. hates cats. the feeling seems to be mutual with each.
she grew up with a german shepherd called walter who was her ma’s originally. they left him at a shelter when she + pa ran away , knowing they wouldn’t be able to look after him.
they do have a dog now ! his name is romeo ( ROO for short ) , he’s bright white and 85% floof. he likes to sit in aislinn’s lap while they’re driving.
they nearly ran him over when he sprinted into the road out of the fog. they took him to the nearest village and they said he didn’t belong to anyone there —— he’d been living off rabbits and scraps from the shepherd. they were going to take him to a shelter at first but at the sight of him sitting up in the back seat , watching the landscape pass out of the window , aislinn burst into tears at the idea of leaving him. he’s been driving around with them ever since. aislinn is 100% certain he’s a ghost or an ancient god or something.
his bark is actually pretty much the only loud noise that doesn’t affect her. it’s that deep , sort of quiet ‘ BOOF ’ that big dogs do and it’s probably her favourite sound on the whole earth.

obviously what made hp The Thing isnt so much directly the content as peoples reaction to it esp since nobody cared about books back then (or not so much what was seen as british childrens literature, anyways) and anyways the way people have been constructing stuff around their enthusiasm for the source material has always been and continues to be the best part. seems like once every few months jkr says some bullshit but then i’ll also see some like little text analysis or joke or sick art from some random fan where its like hell fuckin yeah dude!!! like the collective fanalysis should be the new canon author now coz i mean....i mean honestly sometimes jkr says shit abt her own content where its like. did you even read what you wrote or
anyways the fans and their shit has always been the best part. for me when i think of myself of an hp fan im honestly like a fan of the fans. like dont get me wrong, i like the books and i like got caught up in the midst of the great like 3.8 yr break before the fifth book so i experienced all the subsequent Waits. and like part of it was that shit you had to be there for. and i wasnt there for a lot of it actually because i wasnt online enough or extensively enough to like experience the fansites side of things, much less participate in it, and i was only just 13 when the last book came out so its not like i had the options of older fans anyways. forever a touch bitter that for some fucked reason our parents figured that me and my 16 y.o. sister couldnt go to our local borders half a mile from home for the nerd party that wouldve been our first and last midnight book release! sure, the lifetime of abuse was shitty, but thats really why i disown my parents
anyhow, the point is, its pretty cool what all people did back in the day (and still do i guess but like man, when the books were still coming out. things were a thing.) like, the fansites, and the fact we owned books that were just chapter by chapter analysis of the books to make ootp/series predictions, and a book that was dh predictions, and that like some people’s hp thing turned into Their Thing. and shit theyre doing now was from what they were doing back in the day just coz they wanted to for hp and it was fun / their passion and whatever. and someone writing my immortal, which btw is an elaborate joke fic i swear to you. there were lots of good jokes, still are
didnt really set out to go anywhere with this and i clearly havent. it just speaks to me because the only reason im “creative” is coz i like to draw for things im a crap nerd for. so i respect other ppl doing these really passion driven in depth things just from being nerds for hp. making news sites and fan sites and bands and increasingly elaborate ongoing jokes until darren criss ends up on glee, speaking of elaborate ongoing jokes, Oh Shit
i mean i can be and am both a supremely depressed and passionate person and i really connect with people being passionate and earnest, who doesnt, and meanwhile people who are disengenuous or even just really all the time Cool and not in a rad way but in a like, totally unexcitable way, im just not gonna jive w you sorry. no sparks=no sparks
and then also i like hp and i think that what ppl were doing back in the day could be pretty great and i like that some people’s hp shenanigans contributed a lot to continued shenanigans and good for them, tbh. like that hp fanartist i used to know now like being one of those ppl whose art is their career and they’re fancy. and shit. good for everyone. and even if people arent fancy, there was just a lot of having fun and making cool shit that was directly fans to fans and just people doing actually real stuff that wasn’t involved in like capitalism man like shit for free or self sponsored productions of videos or bands or musicals and hell fuckin yeah, its a wasteland out here and there’s not often so much of a chance for people to just be doing shit coz they want to enjoy themselves and connect with other people. thats anticapitalist propaganda
and so anyways on occasion here i’ll see a short little text post or something and go hell fuckin yeah!!!! and jkr tweets something and we’re all like listen if it was just you i’d hate your creation completely by now alright. its always been these guys (gestures vaguely to nerds)
(edit sidenote: i do hate when ppl are like, really serious abt their house sorting though. like i’ll joke argue abt it but thats one hp nerd thing i can never get behind is like ppl who really consider it a major serious identity thing that theyre a ravenclaw or whatevs. like wtf dude. in general the only thing im mostly Serious about is that snape is a punkass bintch. which is pretty funny so)

write abt the music that reminds you of jake !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I HOPE YOU’RE READY FOR THIS THREE-PART ANALYSIS
warning: it’s super long. i hope read mores work on mobile. if not, i am so sorry if you are reading this on mobile.
part i: i guess i should start with the things on my playlist (with the exception of green day, because green day gets a whole section)
i’m just gonna go song-by-song (well, artist-by-artist) on this and try to explain my reasoning for each song pretty succinctly (though again, i’m saving all the green day ones for the end.) so, starting from the beginning!
prelude/angry young man, no man’s land, and shades of grey – billy joel
i’ll be honest, i was debating whether or not to add “prelude/angry young man,” just because the musical vibes itself don’t quite fit fit jake – but the lyrics fit him so well that i had to include it. ( and he’s never been able to learn from mistakes / so he can’t understand why his heart always breaks ) while “no man’s land” doesn’t remind me of jake specifically, it seems relevant to the class issues, media monopolies, and media addictions that plague pete’s world and that jake feels particularly concerned with ( i see the children with their boredom and their vacant stares / … / thanks to the condo kings, there’s cable now in zombietown ). and “shades of grey,” for me, fits the ideological growth jake goes through over the course of the war and getting to know mickey, and that continues on as he gets older and deals with more morally gray situations in torchwood. while i typically write him still more radical and self-righteous than the speaker in the song, it fits one of his major character arcs: these days it’s harder to say / i know what i’m fighting for / my faith is falling away / i’m not that sure anymore.
anarchy in the UK – the sex pistols
honestly. classic british anarchist song. it’s gotta be included. though it pains my heart to remember that pete’s world has the people’s republic of great britain and isn’t a monarchy, so the sex pistols never released “god save the queen” (and if they did, it would have been vastly different.) so jake simmonds, who went through an anarchist phase in university and continues to be very into anarchist punk, has never heard “anarchy in the UK.” please hold him in your heart the next time you hear the sex pistols.
runnin’ riot – cock sparrer
violence? self-destructive behavior? anger at the rich? constant desire to start fights? what about this song doesn’t scream jake simmonds? (other than the fact that the band is from the south, of course. jake would hate to be mistaken for a southerner.)
viva la revolution – the adicts
celebrating revolutions? emphasizing freedom of thought? enough said
london’s burning and london calling – the clash
okay honestly half the reason i included “london calling” is just because it was the soundtrack for the scene in billy elliot where tony is chased + arrested by the police, and jake relates to tony just about as much as he relates to billy. but it does also seem like the kind of marching, rhythmic song that would fit scenes of marching cybermen ( london calling to the zombies of death / quit holding out and draw another breath. ) “london’s burning” just seems to fit jake’s general london aesthetic – watching people zone out to media while he sits around and bides his time.
random number generation – hedwig and the angry inch
i’m going to talk some more about hedwig later on, but “random number generation” in particular reminds me of jake and the cybermen, with the combination of punk rock and programming the human brain ( all of our feelings and thoughts / expressed in ones and in aughts )
sucker punch – jonathan coulton
this song makes me think a lot of jake and the preachers ( third location and a second-string team and one awful plan ). but honestly, the whole song is about getting into fights, breaking things to relieve stress, and fully embracing self-destructive behaviors ( i don’t wanna straighten up / i don’t wanna fly right / i just wanna drive around a while and / bust a couple things up with the bad kids / / and i feel better already, and i feel better already ). it’s jake in a nutshell.
sheep – pink floyd
i remember reading on tvtropes once that age of steel actually references pink floyd’s animals, which is the album this song comes from; there’s a shot of battersea power station in the episode that’s really similar to the album cover. “sheep” in particular fits the cybermen to a T. it produced the description for my blog until i changed it today. ( what do you get for pretending the danger’s not real? / meek and obedient, you follow the leader / down well-trodden corridors into the valley of steel. )
part ii: the musical soundtrack to jake’s life, because i’m theatre trash
billy elliot
so if you’ve spoken to me for 5 minutes about billy elliot, you’ve probably realized that a) i love billy elliot b) jake loves billy elliot. now, jake probably hasn’t seen the musical (though i can imagine, if pete tyler bought a bunch of tickets as part of a “look at me i’m cultured” thing, jake wouldn’t mind going along just to see what it was like.) but there are a couple of songs that just really remind me of jake – “solidarity,” given that half of it is literally striking miners clashing with the police; “he could be a star” makes jake a little embarrassedly emotional whenever i listened to it, just because of how much he relates to tony and how strongly he believes in communities coming together.
hedwig and the angry inch
hedwig is the one musical that i feel that jake would actually really like (that and american idiot, maybe, bc green day.) but a couple of songs in particular remind me a lot of him. jake is sort of unreasonably attached to the idea of soulmates, though he would never say as much, and he finds most portrayals of the soulmates concept cheesy. but he does think that sometimes, two people click in a way where it’s clear that some kind of fate brought them together, and it’s not just that they bring out the best in each other – they bring out the essence of each other, for good or bad. (cough no i’m not talking about mickey cough.) so “the origin of love” gets him pretty emotional; i’ve been toying around with the headcanon that jake’s got a sun tattooed on his wrist, in reference for aristophanes’ children of the sun.
but!! the song that i really associate with jake, the one that basically sums up my eventual goals for his future happiness, is the reprise of “wicked little town” (+ “midnight radio,” since they more or less go together.) coming to terms with being left by the person you consider (openly or not) your other half, and with the idea that “there’s no mystical design / no cosmic lover preassigned.” in “midnight radio,” coming to terms with being whole on your own, not needing someone else to convince you of it.
part iii: did you know i never used to be into green day until college?? who would have thought, looking at me now
okay, so if you’ve spoken to me for five minutes or looked at my blog playlist for five seconds, you’ve probably also realized that i really strongly associate jake with green day. now, originally i associated him most with american idiot, in part because it was the only green day album i knew for a long time – and let’s be real, one nation controlled by the media is like.... literally pete’s world. the songs from american idiot i still associate with jake are “st. jimmy” because of – like many of the songs on the list! – the self-destructive behavior (and hence why i took the URL for my second blog from the line i’m the resident leader of the lost and found,) and a section of “homecoming” (mostly because of how it’s staged in the musical, with the one major character who’s been left out of all the action sitting on his couch, getting drunk, and snarling at himself nobody likes you / everyone’s left you / they’re all out without you / having fun.) oh, and “give me novocaine” – escapism and addiction, what what.
the second green day album i associate with jake is revolution radio. i mean, with so many songs about sticking it to the Man, is it much of a surprise? the title song is apropos for the preachers: compare a group named because they preach “the gospel truth” to give me ... the headline ‘legalize the truth’. if i had any kind of animation skills or the dedication to follow through with an animation project, i’ve had a vague idea for an animation set to “say goodbye” ft. traveling the world, fighting cybermen, and mourning the preachers. say goodbye to the ones you love cuts to a photo of ricky, and mickey saying goodbye to rita-anne; violence on the rise / like a bullet in the skies has the boys trying not to be, y’know, killed by cybermen or anything.
but again, there’s one song in particular that makes me think of jake, and that’s “bang bang!” i saw an interview with andrew hayden-smith once for a behind-the-scenes doctor who thing, and he said something along the lines of jake joining the preachers and getting so into fighting lumic because he thinks it’s a bit of a laugh. now, i don’t totally agree with this – jake seemed pretty into the idea of executing pete tyler for working with lumic, and killing the guards who were guarding the zeppelin, and i think there’s some motivation for that other than just “lol murder is fun” – but jake does definitely enjoy the fighting, the conflict, more than he should. he grew up idolizing fighters, idolizing soldiers, idolizing people who use violent means for political ends. ( i wanna be a celebrity martyr / ... / i wanna be like the soldiers on the screen ) jake would make himself a martyr for the sake of the preachers’ cause; as much as he grieves ricky and mrs. moore’s deaths, he admires how they died. it’s how he wants to die: fighting, making a statement, going out in a blaze of glory. ( literally, in ricky’s case. haha. i’m terrible. )
finally, there’s one album that as a whole makes me think of jake, and that’s 21st century breakdown. its aesthetic, the styles of music, the themes intertwined throughout the album – media control (”the static age,”) religion & doubt (”east jesus nowhere,”) war and patriotism (”peacemaker,” “21 guns,”) abandonment and self-loathing (”restless heart syndrome”) – all resonate strongly with jake. (also, the kind of wistful loyalty in “last night on earth” makes it very much the kind of love song jake would listen to while lying face-first on his bed and having Feelings about the person he’s in love with. just sayin’.)
finally, “know your enemy” is such a jake song. he’d play it to motivate people before going up against cybermen. he’d play it to pump himself up before a fight. he’d listen to it during training. he’d play it while getting ready in the morning and headbang so hard he accidentally headbutts the sink. that punk rock marching anthem, that call to violence, the stamp-your-boots-on-the-floor rhythm – they all work together to make me instantly think of jake whenever this song comes on.
IN SUMMARY:
hell yeah punk rock!! revolution!! self-destruction!! (don’t follow jake’s example kids!!) if you’ve read all the way to the end, i admire your dedication. i don’t know how interesting it is or how much sense it makes, since i’ve also been half-watching death note while writing most of this, but i really enjoyed writing it. jake is a punk mess. i love him.
