Edith Schloss “Daisies + (Others)” Watercolor on paper

Edith Schloss (1919-2011), among our great expatriate artists, imbued her work with the bittersweet, fragile, intimate and naive, thereby connecting every aspect of her personal iconography to the milieu of postwar America.

Schloss knew “everyone who counted in Manhattan’s legendary postwar art scene.” She became an integral member of the Chelsea-New York art scene which included her future husband, photographer and filmmaker Rudy Burckhardt), and the Jane Street Group around Nell Blaine.

Schloss’s also wrote prodigiously. She was an editorial assistant at Art News in the’50’s, art editor for the International Herald Tribune for 18 years, and wrote regularly for Wanted in Rome. She was one of the first to write about Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesca Woodman.

Schloss also published books of her poetry, authored and illustrated children’s books, and created set designs and record covers for Alvin Curran.
