Mha Bf Headcanons
HELLOOOOOO
I'M FINALLY DOING A MHA BF HEADCANONS YAY!!!
Sorry about that uhm yea I'm finally doing this...actually fun fact this was the one i was supposed to post first instead of the genshin one...huh...u learn something new everyday.
Also some of the headcanons might be cringe, occ and inaccurate i watched the anime and i read the manga ofc but i forgor somethings that happened since yk adhd and I don't re-watch things-....so this is kinda a blind thing for me lol
Also my writing style might be different since I'm actually using my phone or iPad to all this, mainly because I always use my laptop to do school things and for some reason whenever I open Tumblr in it, it always makes my laptop slow down soo I'm trying to avoid that hahaha....
REMINDER: These characters don't belong to me. They belong to Horikoshi Kōhei and this is just a work of fiction.
Anyways i hope u enjoy!
(Mha Boys pt.1)
~Izuku Midoriya~ (Deku)
Tumblr media
~Soft/Gentle Boyfriend~
- Izuku would be the gentlest boyfriend ever. He just knows how to make you smile ya know :3
- You and him would always train together, exercise together and pretty much do almost everything together, aweee
- He's your personal tutor, I mean he’s really smart soo if you ever need help just ask your loving boyfriend hehehe
- I feel like at the first few months of you guys relationship was that he was very shy at first(he still is), But after he got used to your present he doesn't blush that often anymore. He still does sometimes, How cute~
- You both always spar together although you’re the only one who wants to, Our boy deku doesn't wanna hurt you ya know so you would have to convince him to spar with you but if it's just to exercise or practice your Quirk it's fine with him
- Deku would never be jealous except he'd be more inscure then jealous, He thinks that he doesn't deserve you. He just thinks he isn't manly enough or strong enough to protect you. Thats not true of course, Just reassure him that he deserves you and he’s manly and strong enough to protect you and his insecurities gone.
- He thought his mom wouldn't like you but...she does! When she first heard about you and saw you at the sports festival she started to like you alot! Deku is very happy about that, Once you and her met face to face she had a bright smile on her face while inviting you to her home. Although deku is happy that she likes/loves you...can she please stop showing you his baby pictures!?(Embarrassed deku)
- Most of the time you are the one imitating love languages since sometimes his too shy but his learning don't worry
- The first "I love you" your first to say it, When finds the right moment to say it he gets nervous and chickens out...and then goes beet red when you say it hehehe~💕
- Overall your love for each other is gentle, soft and pure. He wants to make you proud not only his mom, Because he wants to be the hero you want him to be.
Nicknames: Puppy(hehehe) and love
Conversation with you: "Uhm...hey love..after school would you want to go to the park and have a..study picnic? Why? Well...i think a breath of fresh air is nice while studying! And we get see the beautiful park and all. ah! You wanna go? G-great! I'll..pick you up at your dorm room after classes, l-love you puppy"
~Katsuki Bakugou~ (Dynamite)
Tumblr media
~Protective Boyfriend~
- Now...i was caught between possessive and protective but I feel he'd be more protective, Since he wouldn't want you to get targeted by the league or to get hurt. Even if he knows you can handle yourself, Let him have this-
- If you don't know how to cook, Well no problem! He would be the to cook for you everyday! He would make you bentos that look very good so you better finish it! Or otherwise he'll kick your ass! Lovingly of course hehehe~
- If you do know how to cook however...expect him to challenge you to a cooking competition to see who's a better cook, The bakusquad's the judges of course while the rest of the class are just glad to have you both as cooks as most of them can't cook and you both are just amazing cooks!
- Your dates are movie nights, study dates and just being together and enjoying each other's company :3
- When he introduced you to his mom and dad, He thought his mom didn't like you...but she already did! She loves you! And was questioning why you were dating her son, Which he got mad at and yelled at her for it. Seriously...you and katsuki's dad are the peacemakers and are both trying to stop them from killing each other😅
- He's more gentle and soft with you then anyone else and everyone in your class knows it, The way he doesn't yell or cuse when his around you, The way he doesn't overdo it when you both spar or train together and the way he looks at you more softly rather then a glare. Yea..katsuki bakugou is definitely inlove💕
Nicknames: Babe, teddybear, dumbass and baby
Conversation with you: "Oi... here *hands you a bento* what? It's for you dumbass...what? Just be t-thankful! Damn teddybear *red faced*"
~Shoto~ (Shoto Todoroki)
Tumblr media
~Clueless Boyfriend~
- Trust me, He doesn't know shit about love. When he was probably starting to have feelings for you he thought he was just sick or it was your Quirk making him feel sick(Which isn't true of course) Then the girls started noticing this....and told him he was in love! But...he doesn't know what that means..so he asks his sister and she explains it and BOOM you guys are going out now! :D
- Since he’s VERY inexperienced you would have to be the one to initiate love languages, Good thing is he’s a fast learner soo sure enough he'll also start being affectionate💕
- He LOVES cuddling and you love it too! If you’re hot use his cold side if you’re cold use his hot side! His just perfect for cuddling~
- He always shares his food with you, He doesn't know why...but if you want his cold soba noodles..tell him and he'll give it happily🥺
- His sister, brother and his mom LOVE YOU, Now...his dad..shoto doesn't care if his dad doesn't like you cause his opinion doesn't matter. But..one time you and endeavor had a talk...and he actually said that it was ok to date his son😯
- You would always have dinner at the todoroki household, His siblings are always honored to have you at their home~
- When you first met his mom she smiled at you lovely like you were her child, and apparently shoto kept talking about you when he visits. So she eventually came to love you because of how much you give her son happiness and love, Mama Rei is happy shoto met you~
- He doesn't like sparring with you cause he doesn't wanna to accidentally hurt you...but if you just wanna train that's fine!
- Surprisingly he was the first one to say "I love you" It left you shocked of course...but he wanted to surprise you and he wanted to tell you he loves you soo..hmm hehehe~
- Your dates are....cuddling! As I said he loves cuddling but don't worry he also likes to take you shopping! And on dinner dates, study dates the list goes on and on💕
- Shoto is so grateful to have You, He might not have experience and is new to this but...his willing to learn...just for you~
Nicknames: Baby and love(That's it his still confused about nicknames lol)
Conversation with you: "Hello love. Would you want to go to my house again? Fuyumi said to invite you for dinner again...huh? Sure? Ah..alright..I'll see you later baby, I love you *Smiles fondly at you*"
Tumblr media
I'M DONE!!!

✶ 𝐇𝐗𝐇 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐒: 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 & 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒, 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇 & 𝐃𝐀𝐌𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍   Long story short, I have been thinking about this for wayyyyy too long now and wanted to get some ~thoughts~ & analysis written down! This post is going to be...fairly long, lol. Apologies in advance :D
Also, if you can’t see the last gif (the one for ‘holy’), click here. Tumblr keeps fucking up the image when i try to upload it :////
This post is probably going to be about 2/3 yorknew & phantom troupe/kurapika focused, 1/3 chimera ants, maybe with some references to other arcs (including manga-only arcs) mixed in. so, ofc, tons of spoilers ahead! also, i realize that my blog theme is hard to read (and i’m p sure clicking ‘keep reading’ sends you to the og post itself), so i’m linking the post w/ full text copy/pasted in on my art backup side blog (which has a more legible font) here.
✶ 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇   I’m sure absolutely nobody is surprised with me starting here - there is just. SO. MUCH. DEATH. in hxh. & right from the start, one thing I noticed that togashi really emphasized was the #4 and its connection to death. in japanese, chinese, and im p sure some other asian cultures the number 4 is pronounced like the word for death so it’s associated with death in general, and boy oh boy does the ‘deadly number 4′ thing show up E V E R Y W H E R E. we get to the hunter exam, and hisoka is applicant #44. kurapika is #404. i didn’t notice it at first, but this was so intentional holy shit. togashi is NOT SUBTLE.
So pika & hisoka are, right off the bat, associated with death. okay. and then there are even more clues to drive the point home: hisoka is member #4 in the phantom troupe, kurapika’s birthday is april 4th (aka 4/4). 100% not a coincidence (!!). with hisoka, it’s pretty obvious why togashi’s throwing all this death 444444 stuff around - dude is a psycho murder pedo clown, literally gets off on killing people (and there’s also the fact that judas sits 4th from the left in the last supper painting, and he’s sort of the judas equivalent for the phantom troupe). with kurapika, though, it’s a bit more subtle and woven deeper into his characterization, which i LOVE. togashi puts the mans in blue & gold & white (traditionally ‘pure’ or ‘heavenly’ colors), makes him so fucking kind & so good-hearted.....when he’s not relentlessly pursuing his revenge, ofc. more on this in the next section, but pika = death. togashi has made that v v v clear.
Backtracking a bit to hisoka, though, I also just wanted to point out the 4 is death symbolism in the fortunes too (GOD i love the fortunes): in one translation, he’s the false fourth moon, and in the og japanese (i think), he’s the false hare (4th in the lunar zodiac or w/e it’s called. i don’t know the japanese cultural influences here, but in the chinese legend that established the zodiac animals, they race across the heavenly river & the top 12 animals got zodiac slots. the hare finished 4th, so it’s #4 in the cycle).
And just as a final note, Tserriednich is the fourth prince of the kakin empire, and also another dude who has a hard-on for murder & other gory shit. again: togashi is not subtle with this, lmfao
✶ 𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘, 𝐔𝐍𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘   As probably everyone who’s gotten to yorknew knows, togashi is so 0 fucks given when he wants to be. I mean there’s the whole thing where he just. took New York and decided, Yorknew. LMFAO, but also, he made the main antag of that arc be named chrollo lucilfer, sit around in a ruined church, have a reversed cross coat, pale & dark-haired/dark-eyed, generally dressed in dark colors, very terrible murder guy. liiiike......chrollo x devil symbolism game is 1000/10 at this point lmaooo
And i know absolutely nothing about christianity in general, but pt/kurapika & yorknew arc is just so full of christian imagery/symbolism! one thing that i L O O O O O O V E though is how togashi really blurs the traditional christian-coded good/evil, holy/damned boundaries.
Back to kurapika: he wears gold and blue, his coloring is very stereotypically ‘angelic’, he’s precious and good and kind. his chains are all about ~judgment~ and ~healing~ - some of the chains are also in literal cross shapes, aren’t they? And the chain dagger in his own heart...the imagery is very startlingly similar to the immaculate heart of mary, where the swords stabbing thru the heart apparently represent seven sorrows. IDK much about this stuff other than the visual similarities; literally had to google ‘daggers through heart christianity?’ to even get the name of that thing LOL. anyway, at first, it seems like togashi establishes him as the ‘angel’, the ‘good’, the ‘holy’ in the angel/devil, good/evil, holy/damned dichotomy between him and chrollo.
But that’s not the end of the story. his entire storyline is driven by a huuuuuuuge giant desire for vengeance, first of all, and then there’s the scarlet eyes, which canonically are seen as demonic/cursed/what have you (according to one of the movies or smth? where they show pika as a 10 y/o?), and then we also have red eyes in modern culture being associated w pretty much the same thing (vampires, anyone?). the fight scene with uvo has everything in b&w besides the blood on his face & his red eyes & the moon (<<< more fortune foreshadowing & symbolism, i love to see it), and there are tonssss of scenes where he has to suppress his rage. so all of that is obviously not very angelic of him i would say LOL. in fact, what i find super interesting is that the scarlet/red eyes (which are ‘demonic’) is actually the driving factor behind his super powerful nen abilities; this ties in so well with the fortunes & death associations imo! the fortunes call him the ‘death-bringer’ in one translation, or ‘half-angel, half-death’, so that’s one side of pika = red eyes = death, but there’s also the fact that emperor time is literally draining his life force. so pika = death for both himself and others namely the pt, question mark?
Now for chrollo: togashi’s devil symbolism is EXTREMELY overt with him, but i love the subtler jesus references too. the church thing, obviously, and the st. peters cross which is cuz st peter respected jesus too much & didn’t think he was worthy to die in the same way as him (or something like that, i am the most atheist person in the world & hxh is literally my entire christian education pls) but is also used as an anti-christianity symbol these days. bandit’s secret looks like a bible, lbr, and mans has a cross tattoo.
Other things beyond visuals - 12 spiders, 12 apostles; hisoka’s betrayal, where member #4 can be thought to correspond to judas sitting 4th from left at last supper. and this miiiiight be a bit of a stretch, but i think the meteor city being the place of origin may also play into the blurred line between angel/devil and holy/damned here; meteors are defined as space rocks that are in earth’s atmosphere, becoming incandescent in the process. meteorites are for the kinds that actually reach the ground. and idk, lucifer was cast out of heaven / sky too right? so i think there might be some subtle fallen angel imagery/symbolism playing into the pt as well
✶ 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 (𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐒)   Last section yay! i don’t have as much to say about this, besides when i was making chimera ant arc edits & realized that there might have been some subtle gon/meruem parallels???
So obviously, everyone knows that line killua says to gon - “you are light” - and then i was just remembering that meruem’s name means.... “light that illuminates all” (!!!!). maybe it’s a coincidence, but knowing togashi, i’m leaning towards nahhhh. there HAS TO be some kinda meaning there (!!).
Going back to the events of the chimera ant arc....ooh boy. let’s see: gon is optimistic & hopeful even in the face of kite potentially being dead, killua says he’s light, they find kite & dude is fucked up, gon is pissed. gets all angry & ~dark~, especially during the palace invasion when he’s staring pitou down as she fixes up komugi. then the actual fight against pitou: more darkness, more anger, but through it all there’s still light, namely his jajanken being very orange & fiery lookin.....and that final sequence, where he puts all his possible nen he’d ever have into his ~final form~ or wahtever & turns into a male version of true form!bisky but dressed in a crop top & short-shorts (i am SCARRED, btw. s c a r r e d !). there’s just huuuge flashes of light as that’s going on, and it reminded me of supernovas or dying stars when i was thinking about it, where the star is like, collapsing under its own weight? & burning thru its own fuel, until there’s nothing left except a dwarf or black hole or what have you. one final, extremely deadly burst of light & energy before death.
On the meruem side of things: born into a dark cave, exhibits a traditionally evil/cruel/wicked/whatever personality/traits so that has ppl associating him with darkness. then he gets to know komugi, starts to appreciate other aspects of humanity, seems like he could have actually turned into a decent person who doesn’t want to eat everyone - so that’s a ‘path to light’, maybe? - and then the extermination team yeets themselves into the palace, netero takes him out to bumfuck nowhere, they fight. netero’s fighting is just ALL light, from his giant ass golden 100-type guanyin bodhisattva to the poor man’s rose. again, there’s the sense of finality to it all, in a similar vein to dying stars: netero comes in determined to kill meruem no matter what, and we all know netero doesn’t flake. then we see netero get destroyed after the zero hand, and he triggers the rose, and everything is burning & on fire before the flames are put out and all turns dark again.
But wait!!! pouf & youpi revive meruem and all he does is play gungi with komugi, even with the poison of the rose. he eventually dies, and the gungi pieces in that final shot of them together (i am BAWLING just thinking about it holy shit) has one that’s all white, one that’s a black ring and white inside. i assume all white is for komugi, who has never done ANYTHING wrong in her LIFE, so i like to think that the 2nd one is for meruem - born “into darkness”, literally & figuratively, but he turns something like ‘good’ by the end. it’s interesting how togashi has sort of gone for a bit of a subversion here: the hero going from light to darkness, and the main antag from darkness to light.
✶ 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐂𝐋𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍   AahhhhHHHHHhhh so if you read all the way down here through my LONG rambles, tysm! i would LOVE LOVE LOVE to hear what other people think about all this, and i’ve FOR SURE missed tons and tons of stuff - chimera ants is just. SO MUCH. and i don’t know it as well as yorknew eeek.
I’m not sure if i’m really ~knowledgeable~ in any other areas relating to hxh, so this might be the only one of these that i do, but i definitely think about some of this - esp all the religious symbolism & #4 stuff - a ton! so in the meantime, if it’s of any interest, i’m just going to shamelessly plug my hxh x religious beliefs/superstitions edit series :D lots of love to all!!!

Fic Writer Meme
Thanks for the tag, @chierafied ! <3
----------------------------------------
Author Name:
Here and a few other places my author name is Tenshibeth1, which was a username I'd created back in high school some...gosh, ten years ago now? Time flies! But, it was created in part by my group of friends then. I was in the goth group, but they always said I was the nicest and most innocent of the group, like an angel. My nickname in reality is Beth, short from Elizabeth, and I've always been big into Japan, anime, and manga and all, so Tenshi seemed a fitting choice to add onto my name. Tenshi means angel. The one stands for the fact that it was my first author username. Now, Reflection of a Broken Dream (RoaBD) came later in life, when I felt everything I am and was, was broken. It came after my divorce from an abusive and terrible man...he had me believing I was nothing. I could do nothing right, I was a pest to everyone, and my dreams? Get real. I could never make them come true. Writing has always been a balm for me...and even though I believed few would read or like my stuff, I did eventually begin posting stuff again. To my shock, people liked what I wrote...they wrote me such kind words and pleas for continuation. Everyone who liked and commented on the stories gave me hope again, and confidence in myself. So thank you to everyone who read and commented! I'm where I am now because of you all. ,^.^,
Fandoms You Write For:
SessKag and SessOC from Inuyasha, KuraKag and HieiKag from Yu Yu Hakusho and Inuyasha, KuraOC from Yu Yu Hakusho (although I'm not sure if I've posted any...), and, a long while back, I used to post ShinoHina from Naruto. I also wrote some KakaHina, GaaraHina, SasuHina, and ItaHina from Naruto...I don't know if I ever posted any...but I ship it.
Where You Post:
Mainly on here and on Dokuga. I once posted on Spark a long time ago...and I was posting on FFnet, but something went awry when I tried to get the app...and now I can no longer sign in to my account and no staff members will help me, so I'll probably make another account. I also have an AO3, which I need to update. ><
Most Popular One Shot:
On Dokuga, it's a SessKag titled Now and Forever...which is a one-shot sequel to Written in the Stars. Here, it's the SessKag Someone to Protect with 79 hits. I have no oneshots on AO3. And on FFnet is Hinata's Favorite Insect, a ShinoHina, which only won by two follows. It was neck-and-neck with a SessKag Things That Go 'Thump' In The Night.
Most Popular Multichapter:
Here, it looks like the SessKag Alpha is in the lead with 104 hits. With Dokuga...holy crap, it's Cursed with over 12k reads! O.O On FFnet it's Overprotective, which is a HieiKag...and it looks like it's the favorite on AO3, too! Oh, wow. I need to go back and write on so many stories...T.T
Favorite Story:
Ahh...most of them hold a special place in my heart...but there are a few that are a little more...sentimental than others. Cursed, for example, would be one of the top ones. I began writing it when I was living with my ex-husband. It is one of the few reasons I stayed sane...and the original version of that fic was warped...just like my mind at the time. If anyone's curious, I'll tell that story later...but know that it will end well. Rising From the Ashes is going to be a good story if I can ever finish it. It's a bubbling of hope from the darkest recesses of depression...something I suffer and struggle with everyday and have to rise from. Very Merry Christmas With You is going to be a healing fic, Sesshoumaru helping Kagome heal from a trauma that happened to her as a child. They have the relationship I desire most. Same with Alpha, but it's a more recent trauma that reminds me much of my past marriage. The Unexpected, a ShinoHina, was a much earlier echo of this, with an abusive relationship in the making with her arranged betrothed in the Snow. And I just have a special place for Overprotective and All That is Meant To Be because...I do. They were works when I wasn't as confident as I am now, and I really loved and worked on the stories vigilantly outside of what I posted. I kept writing and re-writing to see which directions I wanted to go with them...I need to re-write them both with more detail and post them...
Story You Were Most Nervous to Post:
That's a tie between Arranged Marriage, a ShinoHina, and Cursed, a SessKag. Arranged Marriage was the first real fic I worked on that I posted after several years and the abuse I went through. The anxiety I suffered to post it was...unbelievable. I thought I might pass out. I expected people to boo me out of there since it isn't a very liked ship...but, happily, I found that wasn't the case. And Cursed... I was revamping it to be made public after realizing how messed up it was, and how messed up in the head I'd been... So, I was understandably nervous and trying to make it better. Real. Believable. And not the dark hole it once was...
How Do You Pick Titles:
Erm...I'm with Chiera, I pick whatever feels best. Mostly, I try to pick something short and sweet...and easy to remember.
Do You Outline:
Define outline. Haha. I do try to kind of figure out which events I want in the story and roughly figure out the ending...but I don't always do that. On the ones I have more of a feel of, I do. Ones I don't? I pretty much fly by the seat of my pants and go on the journey with my readers. Some, I still have no idea how they're going to end. We'll find out when we get there. XD
Complete Stories:
Ai yai yaiii...roughly eight. The Best Antiques will get a oneshot sequel or two, but...yeah. Not very impressive. I have a bunch of unfinished published works...and about seven hundred more on my computer... >.>;;
The list of completed fics:
FFnet
The Best Antiques
Things That Go 'Thump' In The Night
Butterfly
Waiting for You
Hinata's Favorite Insect
Dokuga
Written in the Stars
Now and Forever
Someone to Protect
In Progress:
I am currently working on The Pact, Alpha, and Cursed actively, with some work-ins on the other SessKags. I want to work on them all more, and get back into some of my KuraKag, HieiKag, and ShinoHina.
Coming Soon:
I just posted The Pact chapter 5! Dancing With Your Ghost, a SessKag one shot that likes to rip my heart out every time I write on it. I Found You, a SessKag one shot exploring alternate realities. Romancing, a SessKag series of Sesshoumaru trying to wordlessly woo Kagome. The Dark Guardian, a SessKag I hope to write for Halloween! An interesting take of Sesshoumaru as the deity of death that I started, like, a year ago and forgot about... And I'm working on a fic called The Child, an eventual KuraKag with a rough start. ...I'm also working on another KuraKag in little bits, it's currently unnamed and will revolve around Genkai's secret love child she didn't even tell Toguro about... Yes, I know I'm working on a lot at once. Because of my medicine change I have days where I struggle to focus on any one thing...so I write a little here and there. And some days I don't get to because work kills me sometimes and I have do things after work for work other days. -shrugs-
Prompts:
I love them and am open to them if anyone wants to suggest or send them. They might even help with what I'm writing. The Dark Guardian was created from a prompt. ^.^
("Unbeknownst to you, Death was watching you from the corner of the hospital room when you were being born. Fascinated by life, it imprinted on you. As the years went by, Death often saw you being bullied at school and couldn't do anything but watch; as taking the lives if your bullies would have been too much of a verdict. However, you have just been kidnapped and Death is pissed.")
Upcoming Story You are Most Excited For:
It's a tie between The Dark Guardian and Romancing! I'm excited to explore the role of Sesshoumaru as something loosely like Hades with Kagome as his Persephone...just in a very different way. (If you follow the telling of the story in which he does not rape her. The one I found, she could read the inscriptions and said it did not explicitly say he raped her, just whisked her to Hell.) But that isn't exactly the way the story is going, just that Kagome is his light in the all-consuming darkness. Romancing...is going to be sweet and funny, with a bit of drama added in. And frustration. Why does she not understand?! XD Poor Sesshy... If I could get my act together, I would work on The Youkai Games...something I've been working on, off and on, for the past ten years or so...

Iruma-kun 13 - 14 | Somali 1 | Magia Record 1 | BnHA 75 | Eizouken 1 | Idolish7 s2 1
New season...incoming!
Iruma-kun 13
How did Iruma even notice that collar? Geesh, that kid is perceptive…
This “spitting blood” joke is getting old already…
*Kiriwo starts his machine* - Why do I get the feeling something bad’s about to happen…?
Could you possibly call this “rank is the most important thing” a study of class consciousness, to throw some of Anime Feminist’s words? Or maybe this is a fantasy version of technology and it’s extolling the virtues of technology advancement?! *eyes sparkle*
Can Iruma join Kiriwo already? Please?!
Aw, dear darling! (<- I’m not sure if I’ve said that a lot in these notes, but I say that when I get the warm fuzzies and wanna protect a character…basically, platonic love, I guess…? Oh, “moe instinct” - that’s the words I’m looking for.) Iruma, go and live your best life, okay?
Thank you, story! Even though I knew it was being foreshadowed so heavily by being the focus of basically 24 minutes of this show’s runtime (= about 1 ep), I thank you from the bottom of my heart that Iruma went to the right Battler.
Wait, so Ameri is actually Iruma’s senpai by one year?! Hmm? I never realised that and I read some spoilers!
I like this new chibi animation style! Yay!
I never noticed this until now, but Kiriwo has one big horn and one little one.
I think the title, aside from the pronunciation of “Thirteen Dinner”, is meant to mean “The Thirteen Counts’ Gathering” (or some other high rank) or something of the sort. Update: So I checked and the character used, kanmuri/kan, is used to mean “crown” or someone who wears a crown, i.e. a peerless person, so it would be appropriate to translate that using the term for a high rank which is presumably going to be stated in the segment itself.
Turns out Babel…is just makaitou (the demon world tower). I don’t think it’s really Babylonian in any strict sense.
Depending on where you live, the 665th floor could count as the 666th or…well, the 665th. I know in Japanese, the word for the floor on the ground is ikkai (first floor)…I’m not going to tell you what I know it as though…that would reveal my location outside cyberspace, no?
According to the katakana, the guy’s name is Beruzebyuto (hence the translation as “Beelzebuth”). Beelzebub is the Lord of the Flies and a quick google tells me Beelzebul (close enough) was apparently an alternate spelling for him (or something like that…?). Patron demon of gluttony.
Astaroth, also a demon (king of rot, I think it was from Blue Exorcist)…interestingly, Beelzebub, Lucifer and Astaroth make up an unholy trio and all of them were referred to by a dude called...Solomon (which does kinda sound like “Sullivan”, if you think about it). There’s the connection between these guys…I like his top, too.
Asmodeus, patron demon of lust. We already knew that demon was represented through Azz-Azz, but now you see a spoiler I’ve been hiding for a while – Azz’s mother.
Amaimon…uh, I don’t remember what kind of demon he is in the demonic canon but I know him from Blue Exorcist.
Behemoth…?
Ooh, Ameri’s father is smokin’ hot! (Dangit, I do not want DILFs…) Azazel, a fallen angel and apparently personification of uncleanliness(…?)
Belial and (Lady) Leviathan, which we already knew existed from initial namedrops.
Who’s Baal? Even I have no idea…Update: Apparently he’s a Middle Eastern equivalent to Zeus, which explains his thunder allegiance.
Paimon kinda looks like Chaika, LOL.
LOL, “lifehack” is certainly the right word for it, Sullivan.
LOL, Belial is so short!
Although it’s kind of awkward to not see Lady Levi take a position of power for herself, it’s nice to see she has spirit!
Aw, this is cute. In much the same way I wanted Iruma to join the magical apparatus Battler, I want Sullivan to be Demon King.
Is Opera perhaps related to Ameri somehow…?
Somali 1
I was hoping to get to Plunderer, but got carried away writing another post and then lost the ability to watch both episode 1 and 2 ahead of schedule. So Somali is the new start of the season, but the last relic of the fact Plunderer was meant to start my season (outside ID: Invaded’s advance premiere) is the visual I have for this season. (Oh yeah, one of the reasons I’m supporting this – aside from it being a mid-ranker on my hype list – is that I heard a French animator, a friend of Thomas Romain, is getting his big start here.)
“Dad.” – Oh, f***. I have myself an Usagi Drop. I knew I was going to get something of the sort going into this show, but…Usagi Drop’s experiences (or rather, watching the anime knowing the manga has that ending) have left their mark. Not to mention Somali (as this girl will come to be known) has Latina eyes, which annoys me even more since I dropped that on the basis of being scarred by Usagi Drop.
I’m wondering what Crunchyroll was thinking when they decided to coproduce this – sure, it’s probably quite cute and wholesome, but I’m far from the target audience. Did they think, “Is this what Western audiences will like?” Sure, it would hit a niche that likes this surrogate father/daughter stuff, but I don’t think it’s for me (and I’ve been thinking that all through the OP). I’ll give it a bit more to wow me, but it’s doing pretty terrible so far (because note all other anime of this particular reputation I’m more on the “neutral” side than the “like” one). Somali’s voice is probably the biggest factor – it sounds like an adult woman’s voice got pitch-shifted to attempt to be a child, rather than an actual child.
How can this golem talk about sight when he doesn’t even have eyes??? (Kinda like Juzo from NGL.)
Alright, that’s it. I can see when you’re trying to bait me with supposedly “cute” children, show. You’re gone.
Okay, since I have time and the reviews say otherwise, I’m trying again. I don’t expect to be sold to this though…
Was it just me or was there a reduced frame rate when Somali’s cape was the only thing in the frame…?
For some reason the subbers put “Why?” when the word was actually “What?”, which is a bit silly to be honest with you. (Nande?/Doushite? vs. Nani?...it’s kind of similar-sounding, but the sound is distinctly different.)
Still dropping this show. I just have another episode to add to my list now.
Magia Record 1
I heard there’s no Urobutcher this time around, but the first time I encountered the Urobutcher (in ConRevo) he made a particularly weird-feeling (in the context of the show) episode, so…uh…let’s say the Urobutcher is only as good as the material he writes, and leave it at that. Anyways, this topped my list – even before ID: Invaded came to hunt down that top position – so this better be good.
Um, am I just imagining it, or is that Sayaka and Hitomi discussing magical girls (or Madoka?) over the top of Iroha (I know that’s her name already from the synopses floating around the ‘net) and her fellow magical girls fighting?
Letterboxing? Now there’s something I thought I’d never see in Madoka Magica, ever.
One of the books was on organic recipes.
The teacher talks a tad too fast – I can understand what she’s saying, but it’s like she operates on x1.5 speed compared to the x1 speed of everything else…
“Nakama – because we can do it” – I wonder if that will mean something later…? In Madoka Magica, strange details always mean something.
“The only good witch is a dead one!” “Speech is silver, silence is golden.”– The tiny English isn’t particularly subtle, is it?
Uwasa = rumour.
Takarazaki, huh? I’ll make a note of that.
Who’s Ui?
According to the credits, I assume the blue spear girl is Nanami Yachiyo.
This is a respectable re-entry into a universe which I left not too long ago (in 2017). I’m definitely going to be able to stick with it for a season or however long it lasts.
BnHA 75
All this talk about a database…reminds me of the Quirk I designed for the wiki (also called “Database”). I conceived it in 2015, but I don’t remember who was meant to use it before I retrofitted it to fit the BnHA universe. Update: Welp, I found the document. The superpower Database (which was retrofitted to be a Quirk) is for one Itsuki Hatano.
“One blow to the top of the head!”
Iruma-kun 14
(Note: Some notes may be missing because I was busy multitasking while watching this episode.)
Go, Iruma! Live your best life!
Note “speak of the devil” isn’t how it’s said in Japanese. It sounds something like “whisper a rumour and it will come back to you” based on what I heard Kiriwo say (since I heard the word uwasa in there). Update: Apparently the phrase is uwasa wo sureba… (if you spead a rumour…) and then you cut the saying off to finish the rest of the sentence, just like you would in English.
You can’t even see a substantial part of Iruma’s hair when that demon on the phone (<-I know who it is, because I read spoilers, but I’ll keep quiet on that front!) yells for the first time.
Makura (demon pillow) has that demon pun going on.
Ooh, Kiriwo-senpai is actully kinda sexy with his hair up like that…not that I know the first thing about sex appeal…
So is the ED about the Battler Party, in a sense?
Eizouken 1
I picked this show up because of the rave reviews it was getting.
Very Future Boy Conan, that.
…what? That OP was trippy. Then again, I didn’t mind ConRevo and that was trippy…this negative feeling is probably because I don’t know much about Masaki Yuasa’s quirks, I guess.
Why do people not translate “Eizouken”???? It means “video research club”.
The back is a good spot to sit in a theatre for anime. Why do I know this? I sit in the back of my anime club all the time, that’s why!
“Are those MiBs?” – I laughed pretty hard at that one sentence.
Why does this strawberry milk seem to be a parallel to the milk Asakusa promised Kanamori? (P.S. Asakusa is in Tokyo, IIRC.) Update: Mizusaki means “on top of water” if I understood the kanji right and Kanamori, with the right combo of characters, can mean “forest of gold”...which makes a lot of sense, considering how gold is equated with wealth and currency. Also, here’s proof Asakusa is in Tokyo...not to mention it’s the place from Sarazanmai! Meanwhile, I was thinking there was some sort of anime-related significance to the name, but I was thinking of Asagaya.  Update 2: Mizusaki actually means “water peninsula”. Sorry, wrong saki.
I know there’s a chase scene at the end of this ep, thanks to reading reviews. I want to be wowed by it, which is why I’m (metaphorically) holding my breath.
I like how Asakusa and Mizusaki are bouncing around ideas. That really brings the process to life.
Long skirts and wind but no sexualisation. That’s a good sign!
Whoa, that scene with the comets was AWESOME! I want more!
Idolish7 s2 1
Back with some good boys one season too early…let’s have some fun while these simulcasters can get this stuff fast!
Oh no! (<- self-censored) Nagi’s stupid accent is back! *yells incoherently for a second*
I like the little sound effects that happened whe Nagi’s finger moved around (to suggest “magic”).
I think the joke was something to do with the word gera (?). I don’t quite get it myself.
Misuta- Shimooka, LOL. I love how this s2 isn’t doing any hand-holding, though! I half-expect a flashback to appear and it never does.
Yamato, how are you so-*crying and Yatta! can be heard in the background*Okay, nevvvvvvvvvver mind…
I remember mistakenly saying that Nishiyama was part of Idolish7 (since I looked through some of my old notes lately). Nishiyama is part of ZOOL, so now…I’m not wrong anymore…(That’s not quite relevant to the random announcement of Re:Vale showing up, but it’s on my mind now.)
Hmm…Yamato’s thoughts on Re:Vale…I’ll keep an eye on him.
I think people like Tamaki because he treats them like he would his little sister…a true gentleman. Or maybe that’s all in my head? I haven’t been in the fandom properly, y’know.
This switch to occasional chibi antics…I’m not sure I like it…
Ohmyglob! Another boy to add to my growing list of husbandos! *points at Yuki* I knew he existed, but I haven’t had a proper chance to have a reaction to him ever since I started really “having a thing” for long-haired guys.
Re:Vale are like a comic act (manzai).
Momo has pink nail polish…I just noticed. Update: It’s probably more red than pink.
“Chan-momo” appears to be a variety of modern slang similar to Pig Latin. Apparently Gen from Dr Stone uses it as well.
Yuki has these cute little diamond earrings and Momo has studs. I’ve also never noticed this until now. (I, myself, can’t wear anything past clip-ons because I have a genetic quirk that makes it annoying to get my ears pierced, called beta thalassemia, so I can only fangirl about other people’s earrings.)
What’s the FSC again…?
Kyu-to aidoru!
I think Momo and Yuki are going to reach out to Mitsuki and Tamaki (respectively) most this season…just a feeling, based on their dispositions. Tamaki and Yuki have similar faces, on top of that, so thank goodness we can tell them apart by hairstyle.
Yuki wears this steel blue shade of nail polish…ooh, also cute.
*Riku goes stiff-faced* - *audibly facepalms at Riku’s reaction*
Momo has a black and green earring set on one ear…huh.
Ooh, very nice. It’s a keeper.
Update: Apparently, you pronounce their name “Re:ba-re”, which is a bit different to what I was expecting (essentially “Re: veil”).

Hey all, Dani here.
Welcome back to the blog. I don’t know how long this post is going to be, because I’m sort of writing it in a hurry. I have a bunch of stuff that I need to do after work a few days a week now and I’m still scrambling to figure out my new life schedule.
I guess that sort of leads into the awesome news that I mentioned vaguely yesterday? Monday? My days are completely blurring together at this point. Anyway, I have accepted a position working with Colorworld Books, and I am now their Community Manager. Basically I get to spend my time covering all the social medias and talking about the books and the brand, which is stuff I pretty much already did, but now I’ll get paid to do that. It’s only part-time right now, but who knows. This is a sort-of work from home opportunity that I really need to consider. There is a lot to weigh on if we are in a good enough position for either Damian or I to walk away from our factory jobs. But still, I’m super excited to get to work for a company that I love. So yay.
Watches: Well, we’ve watched a few things over the last week, like finishing the eleventh season of “The Big Bang Theory,” which means we only have one season left. We also did a binge re-watch of “LARPs: the Series” seasons one and two, and honestly that is an amazing web series, and you should check it out if you haven’t because it is a beautifully crafted geek show. And then we finally jumped back into our “Doctor Who” watch and finished season ten, so we’ve finished with Peter Capaldi’s run as the Doctor and it is time to introduce Damian to Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.
Still playing Animal Crossing. I feel like I need to pick up another game for a bit, but then I think about how much other stuff I still need to do, so I just do a 20-30 minute chore list for my island.
#gallery-0-13 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-13 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 20%; } #gallery-0-13 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-13 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
What I’ve finished reading in the last week: Warriors & Weapons by Jim Zub with Stacy King and Andrew Wheeler, Monsters & Creatures by Jim Zub with Stacy King and Andrew Wheeler, Dungeons & Tombs by Jim Zub with Stacy King and Andrew Wheeler, Wizards & Spells by Jim Zub with Stacy King and Andrew Wheeler, and All Systems Red by Martha Wells.
I am still currently reading Drums in Autumn. I’m having problems similar to what I had with the second book, where this one isn’t holding my interest as much as I would like. I’m hoping that will change soon enough, because I’m still not all that far into the massive tome, but we’ll see. I’m wondering if this is going to end up being a pattern of me loving the odd-numbered books and being just so-so with the even-numbered books. I don’t know. But I’ve also picked Shorefall back up and I’m hoping to power through it by the end of the month. It’s really interesting, and I’m reading it pretty quickly, so I don’t know why I kept hesitating on reading it before. And I’m also in the middle of reading a contemporary romance ARC I picked up on NetGalley that is an enemies-to-lovers geeky story, and so far I am really enjoying it.
As for what I’m hoping to read next…well there’s a lot of options. But I’m also heading into the final weekend of the month, so it would be nice to choose books that I’ll be able to finish in time for the monthly wrap-up. Especially since next month is a themed TBR and I’d love to start my month off ready to jump into my reading and blogging plans. So I’m thinking this fantasy novella and this geeky zombie convention story should make for a great end-of-month wrap-up. We’ll see.
Oh, I’m also thinking about binge-reading the entire Akame Ga Kill manga series this weekend. Because a few of the voice actresses from the anime are going to be on the next Colorworld Live, which is June 4, and I’ve already watched the entire anime series, but the manga apparently ends much differently, so I’m curious about that, and it would be nice to have it completed in time for the digital panels and such.
All right, that is all from me for today, but I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.
Weekly Wrap-Up (66) Hey all, Dani here. Welcome back to the blog. I don't know how long this post is going to be, because I'm sort of writing it in a hurry.

Manga the Week of 12/3/19
SEAN: Last month of the year. Gotta squeeze in all the manga and novels you can.
SEAN: J-Novel Club has a bunch of stuff, mostly print. We get print versions of An Archdemon’s Dilemma 2 (the novel) and a digital version of the same (only it’s the manga). Adventures of a Bookworm also gets a 2nd digital manga. Cooking with Wild Game has a 5th novel digitally. How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord has print (7) and digital (11) novels, which may catch us up with Japan. There’s print Vol. 6 of If It’s for My Daughter, etcetc., Etc. Smartphone, and the Magic etc. Is Too Far Behind 6. (Look, it’s hard to type those all out.) We get the print debut of the Marginal Operation manga, and the 10th Master of Ragnarok and Blesser of Einherjar novel digitally. I’m sure that paragraph makes total sense.
ASH: It makes me so happy that J-Novel Club releases print editions. (Still hoping for Faraway Paladin one of these days…)
SEAN: In print, Kodansha has Attack on Titan 29 and L*DK 14.
The digital debut is To Write Your Words (Kuchiutsusu), a josei manga from Kiss about an author who is great at platonic stories asked to being write something more sexual. She ends up getting help from… a dentist?
MICHELLE: As you do.
ANNA: That sounds hilarious, but I can’t keep track of all the digital manga!
MELINDA: I mean, that sounds great.
SEAN: There’s also Drifting Dragons 5, My Sweet Girl 9, Our Fake Marriage 2, Smile Down the Runway 4, and The Tale of Genji: Dreams at Down 9. There’s also digital debuts for the Satoshi Kon titles Dream Fossil and Tropic of the Sea, which came out a few years ago.
Seven Seas debuts PENGUINDRUM (Mawaru Penguindrum), a manga adaptation of the famous anime. It ran in Comic Birz.
ASH: Curious to see how the adaptation plays out since sometimes manga based on Ikuhara’s works can be dramatically different than their anime counterparts.
SEAN: They also have Harukana Receive 5, Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka 8, and a digital edition of the 4th Reincarnated As a Sword.
Tokyopop has a 4th Aria the Masterpiece omnibus and the 3rd Hanger.
Vertical has a gorgeous omnibus 20th Anniversary Edition of Paradise Kiss, which does admittedly remind me it’s also the 20th anniversary of fans begging for Neighborhood Story to be licensed.
MICHELLE: Yep.
ANNA: I would like to beg for Neighborhood Story! I have already bought Paradise Kiss two times, so I will probably not be getting this but it is great for those who haven’t already read the series.
ASH: Paradise Kiss is really, really good. Glad to see it’s being kept in print.
MELINDA: What everyone else has said so far! We need all the Ai Yazawa we can get, in whatever form it happens to appear.
SEAN: Viz has its usual pile. Debuting is Jujutsu Kaisen, a new Shonen Jump series that starts with a boy eating a finger and only gets weirder from there. For dark fantasy adventure fans.
MICHELLE: Urg. I was somewhat intrigued by this but finger-eating is pretty dang gross.
ANNA: Huh. I am curious although finger-eating does give me pause.
ASH: The cover of the first volume gives me Parasyte vibes, so I’m in, finger-eating and all.
MELINDA: Count me in.
SEAN: More Jump? Sure. Dragon Ball Super 7, Food Wars! 33, My Hero Academia 22, One Piece’s 30th 3-in-1 (which I think catches it up), One-Punch Man 18, Platinum End 10 (which still amazingly has not killed their careers), and We Never Learn 7.
MICHELLE: Several good things here!
MELINDA: I have not kept up with Platinum End, and I wonder if I’ve made a mistake.
SEAN: On the Shojo Beat end, we have Ao Haru Ride 8, Queen’s Quality 8, Takane & Hana 12, and Yona of the Dawn 21. Winners, all.
MICHELLE: Indeed, *all* good things, here!
ANNA: Yay!!!!!
ASH: A good week for good shoujo!
MELINDA: Even I’m reading most of these!
SEAN: Yen has a few titles that drifted into the first week of December. Debuting is You Call That Service?, a light novel series from Yen On from the creator of I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years. It stars a man who winds up in the mountains and meeting a vampire girl. Expect humor.
Also from Yen On is Re: ZERO 11, So I’m a Spider, So What? 7, and Wolf & Parchment 4.
Just two manga from Yen: Happy Sugar Life 3 and KonoSuba’s 9th manga volume.
Have you finished your shopping yet?

Manga the Week of 12/20/17
SEAN: Are you ready? 3-2-1 let’s jam.
MICHELLE: *cracks knuckles in a preparatory fashion*
ASH: Get everybody and the stuff together, because there’s a lot of it!
KATE: There is SO MUCH MANGA that even I had to chime in.
SEAN: We start with Bookwalker, who has the second volume of their light novel The Combat Baker and the Automaton Waitress. I felt it was a good series for them to pick up (certainly better than their other LN series), and will be getting this volume.
J-Novel Club has the 4th volume of Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest, which remains the top choice for those who like overpowered isekai and take it Very Seriously Indeed.
Kodansha has many, many things, both digital and print, which I will tackle alphabetically, starting with a 4th All Out!!.
MICHELLE: Woot!
SEAN: Attack on Titan has a big change coming with the 23rd volume, one that (like everything Attack on Titan has ever done) has gotten a mixed reaction.
Cardcaptor Sakura remains one of CLAMP’s most beloved franchise, despite age, appalling Nelvana dubs, and Tsubasa World Chronicle. Now we finally get a sequel with Clear Card, which apparently picks up where the old series left off. I will give it a shot, though I warn you I’m mostly reading for Tomoyo.
MICHELLE: This has been available digitally for a while, and I read it in that format. It’s a cute start, and I loved seeing Kero-chan again.
MELINDA: I’m obviously on board for this.
ANNA: I enjoy early CLAMP, and am leery of recent CLAMP. That being said, due to my love of Cardcaptor Sakura, I will check this out.
ASH: Same! I really do love Cardcaptor Sakura, though.
SEAN: DEATHTOPIA has its 7th and penultimate volume coming out next week.
And there’s also a 4th volume of Elegant Yokai Apartment Life.
If you haven’t yet picked up Ghost in the Shell’s hardcover deluxe editions, why not get them in a handy box set?
We’ve caught up with Japan for Happiness, so it’s nice to see a 6th volume drop.
ASH: I need to catch up with this series, myself!
KATE: The last volume of Happiness had a big time jump and shift in emphasis — something that worked surprisingly well, and and promoted one of the most interesting (and resourceful) supporting characters to a leading role.
SEAN: Inuyashiki comes to an end with its 10th and final volume. It’s always been a bit too weird for me, but then I felt the same way about Gantz.
Kasane has an 8th volume of suspense and horror.
The digital debut next week is The Prince’s Black Poison, a Betsufure romance that honestly sounds like exactly the sort of title I avoid, but what the hey. Recommended for those who like handsome manipulative men. It’s by the author of Gakuen Prince, which was also very much filled with those.
MICHELLE: Oh dear.
ANNA: Feeling sort of meh on this.
SEAN: And Real Girl has a 9th volume of whatever it is Real Girl does, besides remind me how many of these Kodansha digital titles I have yet to sample.
Say “I Love You” has come to its 18th and final volume. Despite the occasional overdose of melodrama, I greatly enjoyed this series, and am happy to see the conclusion after a long wait (we had, again, caught up with Japan).
MICHELLE: I’ve been awaiting this release for a long time!
SEAN: If you haven’t picked up A Silent Voice’s 7 volumes, Kodansha has a box set for you! (Both this and the Ghost in the Shell box are clearly meant for Christmas purchases.)
Speaking of the author of A Silent Voice, we’re getting a 2nd To Your Eternity next week as well.
ASH: Definitely picking this one up. The first volume was very good and surprising in ways that I didn’t expect.
KATE: What Ash said; To Your Eternity is definitely on my short list of Best Sci-Fi manga of 2017.
SEAN: A 6th Tsuredure Children has more 4-koma romance.
And Until Your Bones Rot has a 3rd volume of what is, let’s face it, NOT 4-koma romance.
Seven Seas is next. Arpeggio of Blue Steel is up to its 12th volume, and I’m still really interested in it, which is surprising given it’s about a bunch of cute girls who are really boats.
There’s also a 3rd “not Alice in the Country of Hearts, but the next best thing” series Captive Hearts of Oz.
Unlucky it may be, but the fact that Magical Girl Apocalypse has gotten to Vol. 13 means it’s popular as well.
Seven Seas is starting to pick up light novels that aren’t J-Novel Club print editions, and we begin with Monster Girl Doctor, whose title speaks for itself, though I’m not sure how this falls on the scale between ‘fetishey’ and ‘spooky’ monster girls.
And if that’s too millennial for you, how about a series from the 1980s? We get the first in the Record of Lodoss Wars novels, The Grey Witch, in a fancy hardcover edition.
MELINDA: It’s hard for me to dismiss something from the 80s…
ASH: It really is fancy! I’m looking forward to giving the Lodoss novels a try.
SEAN: Chi’s Sweet Coloring Book is a spinoff from Vertical featuring lots and lots of pictures of Chi to color.
Speaking of cats, Nekomonogatari (Black): Cat Tale is the first of a two-part set in the Monogatari series that finally resolves most of Tsubasa Hanekawa’s ongoing issues.
And there’s also a 4th Flying Witch.
Viz gives us a 3rd Golden Kamuy, which I suspect will have a bit less cooking and a bit more life-threatening violence this time around, but who knows?
ASH: I plan on finding out!
KATE: I seem to be stalking you through this week’s column, Ash! I’m butting in to say GOLDEN KAMUY IS AWESOME. I think Asirpa deserves her own damn series. Heck, it could be a cooking manga and I’d read it.
SEAN: If you want to get someone something terrifying for Christmas, you absolutely can’t go wrong with Shiver, a collection of stories selected by the author, Junji Ito.
ASH: I’m always happy to see more Ito being released! This collection should be great.
KATE: Nothing says “Deck the halls” than a little Junji Ito, I always say.
SEAN: And if you want to give some yuri manga, there’s a 2nd Sweet Blue Flowers omnibus.
MICHELLE: Yay!
ANNA: Behind on this already but I’m gonna read it!
ASH: You absolutely should! I’m so glad this series is finally getting the treatment it deserves in English.
SEAN: Lastly (for Viz only, trust me – we’re not even halfway), we have the 2nd Tokyo Ghoul: re.
And now on to Yen Press, pausing only to scream until our throats are raw and we are coughing up blood. (pause) There we go. Onward.
First off, we have the digital-only titles. Aphorism 13 is the second to last volume, and is for fans of survival manga.
Corpse Princess is up to its 14th volume, but it still has a long way to go. It should appeal to fans of fanservice and zombies.
And Saki 13 means we’re close to catching up, but that’s an ongoing series, so no worries there either. Recommended to those who like mahjong and breasts, not in that order.
On the Yen On side, we finish the digital catch-up for Accel World (9-11) and Irregular at Magic High School (5).
There’s also a new digital release of an older, pre-Yen On title. Kieli was a 2009 series of novels about a girl who can see ghosts, and it had an associated manga as well. Yen now has the digital rights to the novels, so we get the first one next week.
There are also a GIANT number of ongoing and new light novels in print. We get a 12th Accel World, which is in the midst of Haruyuki dealing with another mysterious threat.
The Asterisk War’s 5th volume wraps up its tournament arc, I believe… or should I say, it’s first tournament arc.
Baccano! starts a new 2-volume arc taking place in 1933 and subtitled The Slash. This first volume will show us what happened to that Mexican stereotype of an assassin from the Drug & the Dominoes book.
The Devil Is a Part-Timer! 9 has far less part-time work than expected, as the devil has returned to his homeland to rescue Emi and Alas Ramus.
Goblin Slayer 4 will feature what sounds like a collection of short stories judging from the description. And probably goblins being slayed. The Irregular at Magic High School’s 6th volume starts a new arc called the Yokohama Disturbance Arc, which I think was the final arc adapted for the anime.
Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? asks the same question again, only this time it’s Monsters. Bell says no, others think differently. Vol. 10 drops next week.
KonoSuba’s 4th volume has the inevitable Hot Springs arc.
Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers has a 3rd volume, and I must admit if the storyline is “who’s the traitor” I may bail.
The first light novel debut is The Saga of Tanya the Evil, which is another isekai. A Japanese HR manager with a cold, ruthless reputation is killed, and then reincarnated by God. Not with the best intentions, though – God dislikes his logical attitude and so puts him in a world where magic exists and there is constant warfare. Oh, and he’s in the body of a little girl.
Sword Art Online has reached a dozen volumes, and we’re still in the midst of the epic Alicization arc. We finally see Alice again, but is she brainwashed? Can Kirito and Eugeo save her?
The other light novel debut this month already has its manga coming out from Kodansha, and is the 2nd of the three ‘ridiculous’ light novels Yen licensed recently. That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime arrives next week.
We’re nearly at the end! Only 28 more titles to go! And they’re all Yen Press. We start with a 6th volume of spinoff Akame Ga KILL! ZERO.
Angels of Death is a survival manga with psychological overtimes, which comes from the oddball Comic Gene. I’m not sure what to think of it.
An 8th Aoharu x Machinegun is shipping next week.
And a 5th Bungo Stray Dogs will give us literary references galore.
Light novel adaptations galore! Starting with a 4th manga of Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody.
Dragons Rioting has a 9th volume, which is also its final volume.
If you like the idea of Goblin Slaying but hate prose, I have good news, the first volume of Goblin Slayer is for you.
I know little about Graineliers except it’s from GFantasy, it has two male leads, and it’s not BL but feels like it should be.
MELINDA: Did you say GFantasy? Count me in!
ASH: It’s also by Rihito Takarai (of Ten Count fame) so I’m very curious to see how this series develops. If nothing else, the artwork should be great.
SEAN: Manga based on an unlicensed light novel, part one: the 10th volume of High School DxD.
Manga based on an unlicensed light novel, part two: the 8th and final volume of How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend.
After a year’s hiatus, the Kagerou Daze manga picks up again with Vol. 7, and should be arriving more regularly from now on. For light novel fans, the story here is different from the LN (and indeed the Mekakucity Actors anime.)
A 5th Kiniro Mosaic gives you vague yuri galore.
If you liked the idea of Magical Girls dying tragically but hate prose… well, you know. Magical Girl Raising Project, now in manga form.
The 11th Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan is the last, which I’m pretty sure means there are no current ongoing projects for this franchise, be it anime, manga, spinoff manga, spinoff anime, or the original novels. We should take off our hats and mourn the end of an era.
My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong as I Expected gets a 7th manga volume, though I’m not sure which novel volume it’s adapting.
No Matter How Much I… sigh. WataMote gives us an 11th volume. Sorry, I’m exhausted.
Of the Red, the Light and the Ayakashi ends with its 9th volume, though I believe there is a Volume 10 with side/after stories.
ASH: Another series that I’ve been enjoying but need to catch up on!
MICHELLE: Aha! I had been thinking it was complete in 9, and then recently noticed there’s actually a tenth. Nice to have an explanation for that!
SEAN: One Week Friends is a Gangan Joker title about a cute friendship and the amnesia that threatens to tear it apart.
Re: Zero finishes its adaptation of the 2nd arc with the 4th A Week at the Mansion volume.
Rose Guns Days has a 2nd volume of its 3rd arc.
School-Live! does not come to an end with this 9th volume per se, but I think the series is on hiatus right now, so this may be the last for some time.
And a 3rd Smokin’ Parade arrives as well.
I enjoyed the first novel of So I’m a Spider, So What?, though am curious as to how a book that’s half internal dialogue will translate to manga. We’ll see with this first manga volume.
Strike the Blood’s manga has a Vol. 9, which, like the light novels, has Yukina and only Yukina on each cover.
Sword Art Online has the manga adaptation of the Calibur arc complete in one volume. It’s a great arc if you like the supporting cast, who all play a role – for the last time to date, in fact.
If you feel that yokai manga have gotten too serious lately, you should enjoy A Terrified Teacher at Ghoul School, a GFantasy title that is terminally ridiculous.
ASH: Yokai comedy, you say? Count me in!
Umineko When They Cry begins its 7th arc, Requiem of the Golden Witch. Battler is nowhere to be found. Nor is Beatrice. Instead meet Kinzo’s heir Lion Ushiromiya. Oh, did I mention this first omnibus is 826 pages?
Lastly (yes, I promise, we are at the end), there’s a 7th omnibus of Yowamushi Pedal, which should be SUPER EXCITING.
MICHELLE: Yay!
ASH: I know I’m excited!
SEAN: (falls over) So are you getting everything on this list, or just most of it?

Manga the Week of 5/24/17
SEAN: Either you ride with the manga tide or you let it drown you. Looking at next week… blub blub blub.
MICHELLE: I thought this list was huge enough as it is!
SEAN: Dark Horse has a 2nd volume of Psycho Pass prequel Inspector Shinya Kogami.
J-Novel Club gives us a 3rd volume of Mixed Bathing in Another Dimension, which I still find much better than its title would suggest.
Kodansha has a pile, of course. In the Del Rey rescue category, we have Nodame Cantabile 19 (get ready for weekly releases of this), and Princess Resurrection 14.
MICHELLE: I continue to be asquee about Nodame. Looks like they’ll have the final volume out by the end of June!
ASH: Wow! I wasn’t expecting such a rigorous schedule for Nodame!
SEAN: Their debut is Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, a josei title from Itan magazine. Its anime was insanely popular, so I’m expecting good things.
MICHELLE: I’m definitely looking forward to this one!
ASH: As am I! It’s actually one of my most anticipated debuts for the year.
ANNA: Sounds great!
SEAN: The Full-Time Wife Escapist has a 3rd volume digitally, and I still want more of it.
MICHELLE: I still need to read 1-2!
ANNA: This is one series I’m actually not behind on reading!
SEAN: Hozuki’s Coolheadedness also has a new volume out digitally, its 2nd.
ASH: So many things I’m interested in are only being released digitally right now!
SEAN: Missions of Love 14 is here to make me grind my teeth but enjoy it anyway. It’s still a while away from an ending.
There is also a 3rd Peach Heaven out digitally.
The Seven Deadly Sins is almost old enough to drink with its 20th volume.
And Welcome to the Ballroom has a 5th book, no doubt starting the next arc.
And now for Seven Seas. First off, we have the 7th Golden Time manga, a good solid romantic dramedy.
Kase-san and Bento is the 2nd in the “Kase-san” series, and I would guess will involve bento lunches.
MICHELLE: That’s a good guess. The first one wasn’t profound or anything, but it was pleasant, so I reckon I’ll read this one, too.
ASH: I’ve been meaning to give the series a try for a while now, but there being a food theme does bump it up on the to-be-read list.
SEAN: And a 7th volume of sleepy slice of life Non Non Biyori.
Vertical gives us an 8th volume of Cardfight!! Vanguard, which seems to have gotten over whatever licensing issues had it on hold.
I’ve been forgetting about Boys Over Flowers Season 2, which Viz is still releasing digitally – the 5th volume is out next week.
MICHELLE: I wish I could love this as much as the original. Sadly, it hasn’t grabbed me.
ANNA: I liked the first couple volumes, but I agree, not as compelling as the original series.
MICHELLE: The Yoko Kamio series I *would* be excited about is Cat Street.
SEAN: The rest is Yen, but so much Yen. On the novel side, we get an 11th A Certain Magical Index, now on location in Italy.
Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody has a 2nd volume. I understand it is one of them newfangled trapped in another world thingummies.
The much delayed My Youth Romantic Comedy Is Wrong As I Expected finally gets its 2nd novel, which may require me to reread the first to remind me what’s going on.
And a 4th volume of Overlord, this time focusing on some Lizardman Heroes who will no doubt be destroyed by our title antihero in some way.
Strike the Blood will have a 6th volume of eminently readable and totally uninspiring antics.
The big novel release this month is your name, whose lack of capital letters did not prevent it from becoming a huge movie. It’s complete in one volume, though a sequel is out later this fall.
MICHELLE: I’m a little wary of this, since I loved the movie so much. What if it taints my experience?
ASH: I’m interested in seeing how the novel reads. The manga adaptations of Shinkai’s works have generally been quite good, though.
SEAN: And there’s 3 more Spice & Wolf digital releases, 15-17, which I believe finishes the catch up.
In manga news, there’s a 5th Anne Happy, which wrings laughs out of misfortune. Well, chuckles at least.
Big Order has its second omnibus, as it continues to try to outdo Future Diary.
This isn’t manga, but I don’t care. Brave is out next week! From creator Svetlana Chmakova, it’s a semi-sequel to her hit Awkward, taking place in the same universe but focusing on new kids. It’s super good.
Following something like Brave with the 17th volume of BTOOOM!, a series still best known for its bomb-breast-bouncing scene, seems cruel.
The Case Study of Vanitas gets a 2nd volume. I understand there are vampires.
ASH: And pretty artwork, from what I hear.
SEAN: Corpse Party: Blood Covered must have killed its way through the cast, as this is the 5th and final omnibus. Not to worry, a sequel is out later this year.
Several exciting new debuts this week, starting with Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi), a seinen series from Enterbrain’s Harta magazine that manages to combine dungeon crawls and a cooking manga.
MICHELLE: I am excite!
ASH: Same! I love the premise of the series so much. Granted, the few times that I’ve played tabletop rpgs, the groups had a tendency to put a lot of emphasis on food, both in the game and outside of it.
ANNA: Oh yeah, this sounds good!
SEAN: Dimension W has a 6th volume for those of you who enjoy the things Dimension W provides. (Can I get any vaguer?)
Girls’ Last Tour (Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou) is also debuting, coming from Shinchosha and one of its many Bunch magazines. It’s post-apocalyptic slife-of-life, and probably the closest to Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou anyone is going to get.
ASH: I’m very curious about this one, actually.
SEAN: Karneval has a 7th omnibus.
Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl has a 2nd volume, which seems fast but recall the first volume was delayed a month. In any case, yay!
MICHELLE: Forsooth!
Log Horizon: The West Wind Brigade has a 5th volume, and is one of the more enjoyable fluffy spinoffs out there.
Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun remains a highlight every time it comes out, even with its 7th volume.
ASH: Yes! It is so consistently great! I love it so much!
SEAN: And if you want hyperviolent fanservicey trash (which I sort of like anyway), there’s a 2nd Murcielago.
ASH: Definitely not a series for everyone, but I liked the first volume, too.
SEAN: Re: Zero’s manga starts to adapt the 2nd novel with Chapter 2: A Week at the Mansion. Yes, folks, you’ll get your Rem here.
Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers has a 2nd volume of its manga adaptation as well.
We get the 3rd and final volume of Rose Guns Days Season 2. Worry not, fans, Season 3 is on the schedule. (Are there Rose Guns Days fans?)
Yen released this digitally ages ago, but it’s popular enough to get print now (the upcoming anime may have something to do with it). Enjoy The Royal Tutor!
ASH: Glad to see more digital titles released in print! I wanted to give this series a try when it was first licensed, and now I finally can.
SEAN: Spirits & Cat Ears has a 2nd volume, and while I wish we’d get more of the former and less of the latter I expect to be disappointed.
There is a 9th Trinity Seven.
Lastly, Black Butler fans will take interested in the 2nd Yana Toboso Artworks book, which is devoted to the series.
Keeping your head afloat? What are you getting?

Manga the Week of 3/22/17
SEAN: …eurgh.
Dark Horse has the 4th and final volume of Dangan Ronpa. Will anyone survive? And will any more manga spinoffs be licensed?
J-Novel Club debuts another series with a ludicrous-seeming premise, In Another World With My Smartphone. Still, they’ve won me over with ridiculous books before…
ASH: Though I’ve fallen way behind in my light novel reading, I do continue to be amused by the absurdity of some of these titles.
ANNA: That is sort of hilarious, but I’m just not a light novel reader. If only someone would bring back the 12 Kingdoms books…..
ASH: YES! I would love that so much.
MICHELLE: I was thinking about those books just the other day! I also would read the Saiunkoku light novels.
SEAN: Kodansha has a pile of stuff, including three more digital debuts. Altair: A Record of Battles is a long-running manga from Shonen Sirius, and it’s supposed to look fantastic. Also, more historical manga, yay! Basically, this is the sort of title the Off the Shelf column was made for.
ASH: I was not aware of this series at all! Definitely sounds like something that I’d be interested in reading.
MICHELLE: I don’t know much about it, but many of the covers are gorgeous, so that’s encouraging.
ANNA: Huh, this does sound intriguing.
MELINDA: Well, huh. I think you’re right!
SEAN: BLAME! Academy And So On is a spinoff of the main BLAME! manga that I think is similar to Spoof on Titan. It’s also digital only.
MICHELLE: I don’t know… I really loved BLAME!, perhaps to the point where I wouldn’t find a spoof amusing.
ANNA: I still need to read BLAME!.
SEAN: It’s not all digital. Clockwork Planet makes its print debut. It’s also Shonen Sirius, but seems to be more SF steampunk and fanservice.
And some series are ending, as we get the 7th and final volume of Forget Me Not.
The next digital debut next week is also a “Hey, Michelle and Melinda!” sort of series. Hozuki’s Coolheadedness is a long-running series from Weekly Morning, about a deputy of the King of Hell and his daily life. It’s won awards.
ASH: I’ve seen a little bit of the anime adaptation and it was great fun. I suspect the manga is as well!
MICHELLE: Totally on my list!
MELINDA: Oh yeah, this, so much this.
SEAN: Kodansha has a 3rd volume of In/Spectre and its wonderfully annoying female lead, who I love.
Lastly (at least digitally) is Museum, which runs in Young Magazine and looks dark and depressing as hell.
MICHELLE: I don’t typically go for dark and depressing, but this one seems to be a mystery complete in three volumes, and that does have some appeal.
SEAN: And a 4th volume of That Wolf-Boy Is Mine.
MICHELLE: I’m looking forward to this, which I believe is also the final volume.
SEAN: UQ Holder has transitioned from weekly to monthly in Japan, and that seems to mean volumes are coming out slower here as well. Here’s the 10th volume.
Seven Seas has some stuff as well. A Centaur’s Life never fails to puzzle and confuse me with what demographic it’s actually aiming for, even at its 11th volume.
Lord Marksman and Vanadis has a 3rd volume of fantasy action.
And there’s a 6th Merman in My Tub, which I think may have caught up with Japan.
More BLAME!, as Vertical is releasing the 3rd of its giant omnibus editions.
MELINDA: These really look so nice.
SEAN: Viz has a 5th volume of peppy slice-of-life comedy Goodnight Punpun.
ASH: Goodnight Punpun continues to devastate me, but I still find it compelling.
ANNA: I don’t think I have the emotional fortitude to read it yet.
ASH: It does take a fair amount; I have to time my reading carefully.
MICHELLE: I feel much the same, Anna.
SEAN: As well as another volume of Master Keaton, now in double digits.
ANNA: I love this series.
SEAN: And there always seems to be more Terra Formars, with its 17th volume.
Hooray! That’s it… oh wait, Yen. In fact, we’re not even halfway there. (sobs)
Yen On has 4 books this month, i.e. it’s a very light month for them. First off, Accel World 9 finally finishes off its huge 4-book arc.
Durarara!! also wraps up another arc with its 6th volume. All I can say is: pen. DRRR fans will know what I mean.
Log Horizon’s 7th volume shows us what Shiroe and his group were doing while the events of Book 6 happened.
And Re: Zero shows us Subaru trying desperately not to get killed by his maids.
Oh yes, and for digital lovers, volumes 7-10 of Spice & Wolf’s novels are also out next week.
Now for all the manga they’re releasing. Accel World also has a manga release with its 7th volume.
There’s a 5th volume of the Akame Ga KILL! ZERO spinoff.
The Asterisk War gets a 3rd manga volume.
Always enjoyable Barakamon has lucky Vol. 13, and I find I no longer keep comparing it to Yotsuba&!.
MICHELLE: I still plan to get caught up on Barakamon soon. I have a huge pile.
SEAN: Blood Lad has an 8th omnibus, and is nearing the finale but is not quite there yet.
MICHELLE: Yay! I haven’t read this series in ages.
SEAN: There’s a 3rd volume of the Boy and the Beast manga adaptation.
As well as a 2nd Bungo Stray Dogs.
ASH: As someone who is somewhat well-versed in Japanese literature, I got a huge kick out of the first volume and plan on reading more. I’m not sure the series works as well for people who don’t catch most of the references, though.
MELINDA: I plan on checking this out.
SEAN: More manga adaptations of light novels! Here’s the second Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody.
MORE manga adaptations of light novels! An 8th Devil Is a Part-Timer!.
Dragons Rioting has a 6th volume of what still appears to me to be mostly breasts.
Fruits Basket’s Collectors Edition has reached its penultimate volume, and features more angst than you can shake a stick at.
MICHELLE: Heh.
MELINDA: YES.
SEAN: There’s a 5th print volume of Handa-kun as well.
We have reached the last volume of He’s My Only Vampire, and while I enjoyed it, I am also very happy to see it’s ending.
MICHELLE: Same!
ANNA: One of the few vampire titles I haven’t read!!!
SEAN: The Honor Student at Magic High School continues to be irritatingly ahead of the light novel release with Vol. 6.
Kiniro Mosaic has a 2nd volume of cute girls being cute and maybe sort of yuri.
Then more yuri with the debut of Kiss and White Lily for My Dearest Girl, which may be from Comic Alive but is apparently on the ‘sweet and cute’ end of the yuri spectrum.
ASH: I plan on giving this one a look! The cover is adorable if nothing else.
MICHELLE: I’m looking forward to this one, too! My friend said, “It’s S. A with lesbians!”
MELINDA: Absolutely on my list!
SEAN: Love at Fourteen finally returns with a 6th volume, and let’s face it, these kids are fifteen now.
MICHELLE: Heh. Another series on the read-me-soon pile.
SEAN: EVEN MORE manga adaptations of light novels, with the 4th OreGairu manga, which it too long to type out.
Speaking of long titles, a 6th Of the Red, the Light and the Ayakashi.
ASH: I really need to catch up with this series! I enjoyed the early volumes, but have fallen behind.
SEAN: Return of the Son of manga adaptations of light novels, with the 6th Strike the Blood manga.
Manga Adaptations of Light Novels Must Be Destroyed with the 5th Sword Art Online: Progressive manga, which as always needs MORE ARGO.
A third print volume of Today’s Cerberus.
Twinkle Stars has a 2nd omnibus, and I suspect will continue to deal with not being Fruits Basket.
MICHELLE: But it’s so good!
MELINDA: I am behind on this, and can’t even quite believe I let that happen!
SEAN: And there’s an 8th (really 9th) Ubel Blatt omnibus.
So that’s 48 titles, and that’s not even counting the 2 that Yen delayed to the week after next just because. I think this is a new record. What say you?
