Why I Ship Sonic The Hedgehog and Amy Rose?
Hi! I’ve been a Sonic fan since 2022 and wanted to give insight on a beloved pairing from someone who’s only FRESH in this fandom. So I could give a somewhat recent perspective on something others might’ve grown up with.
Disclaimer: This is just my merriment of cartoon madness. Done for fun. It has my everywhere all at once speculations, and opinions. Spat into one big MESS. No problem if you disagree. I wish you all the best in whatever you create with your preferred take on these characters.

Now, let’s get started!
Reason 1: What Got Me Into Sonamy
I want to recommend people who not only helped me understand the dynamic better, but did so while giving good insight on Amy’s character. Which is one of the most inconsistent in the
ENTIRE franchise. Here they are! In no particular order.
Why Amy is a “Strong Female Character” [Sonic The Hedgehog Video Essay]
Channel: Taro Marshmallow on YouTube.
She helped me understand Amy’s character as a whole. I believe it’s important for people to comprehend Amy’s character in order for them to understand or like Sonamy. No one has to, but it sure was eye-opening for me. So, do of it what you will. I advise people to give it a watch for the AMAZING character analysis alone.
Molinaskies: On Tumblr, this person goes into serious analysis on Sonic’s emotional characterization, and Sonamy too. Words can’t describe how much I appreciate this ship the more I read about their dynamic from someone I can tell has fun doing it.
Sherrydoodlez: This person is the reason I became a Sonic and Sonamy fan at the same time. Once I saw her videos, I was HOOKED. She makes cute, fun, and outstanding Sonamy content on her YouTube channel. It’s mostly Boom!Sonamy animations with voice actors on some occasions. She makes other random Sonic animations as well. It’s a feel good channel you can watch to calm yourself as you head into a romantic cafe of servings you never knew you needed. Give her content a watch. It’s a jolly ride.
IDW (Specifically Issue #2 Page 21): I believe this is the statement which changed Sonic’s view about Amy. At the beginning, the blue blur was still on the run when Amy came around. But after fighting robots together and helping the villagers, Sonic admitted having fun. It could mean he grew more comfortable. Or just loves to fight robots regardless of who’s joining him.
Afterwards, Amy realized their negotiation about Sonic coming back to the resistance was a loss. She happily accepted it and accepted Sonic for who he is. Which made the feelings mutual on Sonic’s part in my opinion. He was even bashful while offering her to join him. Showing he didn’t mind having Amy around a bit longer. I know someone else stated this better, but I hope you get the point.
Sonamy is also the one ship that gets the most hints and jokes. From official writers, voice actors, (ESPECIALLY in Japan. Sonic and Amy’s VAs literally sung a love song IN CHARACTER for crying out loud.) X, Boom, Prime, artist, some of the games, and Sega themselves with their marketing.
Fact check me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure in Japan, Amy’s been called Sonic’s “Girlfriend,” plenty of times and some even theorize they're already together in the Japanese version of Sonic Frontiers.
(Which I’m positive is very intentional)
Can’t forget the creator of the characters Naoto Oshima stated on twitter, “Sonic has the eternal heart of a boy, but were he to one day mature, he’d choose Amy.” I believe if any ship in this franchise at least makes the most since, it’s Sonamy. I’m only scratching the surface, but we’d be here forever if I continued.
Reason 2: The Dynamic
I believe Sonamy works romantically and platonically. Sonic and Amy are best friends so their bond is already close in that regard. I think in times of peace they hang out. Which has been shown in IDW in the retail incentive covers of issue 1, 5th Anniversary.
The reason I think Amy’s the best choice for Sonic is because she can always keep up with him. She understands him and reads him like a book.
(Sonic doesn’t express himself very well, so that’d be a huge benefit.)
She brings an array of emotion out of him, and accepts him for who he is.
Amy wouldn’t slow him down because they’re relationship wouldn’t change at all. She’s always just as down for going out and exploring as he is. Being a hot-head, she’s not adverse for a bit of head busting with her hammer. Amy allows Sonic for a chance at a relationship he couldn’t get inattentive or tired in.
They’d go on their usual adventurers and might only tell a few friends about their relationship.
(Or keep it a secret)
After that, they’d travel together or Amy would leave Sonic to whatever he needed to do. In Sonic’s case, he would appreciate Amy’s understanding and return the favor by giving her flowers. Maybe even show minimal affection.
Like in Sonic X when he gives Amy a rose in episode 52. X also had moments where Sonic constantly protects/holds onto her. Not to mention willingly laid on a pile of hey next to Amy. And kept the bracelet she made him in episode 9.
Sonic X isn’t canon, but IDW has moments of Sonic hanging out or fighting alongside Amy too. Point is, the couple would be an updated version of their friendship. A “POWER COUPLE,” to be specific.
Romance doesn’t always mean you have to be lovey-dovey. You can treat your partner like a best friend as well. Sonic and Amy have a unique relationship because they’re subtle about it.
Reason 3: Why?
I believe it’s important to get this out of the way since these are my weird BIGGIES when it comes to shipping. Why Sonic might have a crush on Amy and why Amy loves Sonic?
Sonic’s (Alleged) Reasons: Amy doesn’t want to change him. She can keep up with him. She’s super compassionate and energetic.
(Sonic stated she was “sweet’ before.)
He respects and might even values her ways of thinking. In TMOSTH, he said:
In Prime he admits she’s, “Pretty great.”
And, he said in IDW Issue #58:
These can be seen as platonic compliments, but it’s the “Accepting Sonic for who he is” thing that homes in the mutual romantic feelings head-canon.
I’d even argue ever since Unleashed/Black Night he had a little crush on her, but felt unsure of it. That is, until IDW. He might still have no clue what to do next.
Sonic lines in Frontiers : “Amy, I should’ve made up my mind sooner.” and “Wish we were sharing an umbrella, Amy.” are huge examples of that and his reciprocated feelings.
Fun Fact: Sharing an umbrella as a couple in Japan is considered a romantic expression, and teens often draw an umbrella with their name and the name of their crush, the way one would in a heart. A very old tradition.
Sharing an umbrella has been seen as a romantic thing in a few American movies as well.
Here’s another detail I find hilarious. I LOVE in instances like Amy being, “The Lady Of The Lake” in Black Night. The time she ran away from Sonic in Unleashed, and became split versions of herself in Prime. The blue buffoon acts as if he grew more fond and I’d even suggest “attracted” to her. He either flirts with her or gets disappointed. To me, it’s a check on the, “Bringing a wide range of emotion out of him,” point.
In issue #2 of IDW it’s similar. Sonic asked Amy to join him. Then she admits being away from the resistance for too long. I’d say it’s a weirdly consistent thing. The times Sonic acts ready to “open up,” he and Amy end up having to save the world and go off to do their own thing.
(That panel in The Metal Virus with Sonic reaching to Amy while she’s freaking out, still hurts.)
Is this a sign they may need to take their time? Fortunately, we have additional content with them interacting outside those situations. I guess the hedgies are allowing each other to be their own person before committing to anything.
Like a “when they know, they’ll know,” situation.
Last thing. Sonic hugs Amy in both IDW and Frontiers. Never happened in official canon before, so his feelings must’ve changed into something.
Amy’s Reasons: He’s her inspiration and motive for loving adventures. Sonic gives Amy an excuse to show off her skills. And she admires his personality.
By the way, can we just appreciate how Amy loves Sonic for the right reasons? Not looks, popularity, or fortune. He always and forever will be her number one.
Reason 4: Conclusion
This isn’t everything, but I’m sure new content will give me new reasons to love this pair. I just wanted to take MOST of what’s already established and use it for a basic understanding.
As basic as overwhelmingly extra can be.
I don’t know whether or not Sonamy will be canon and that’s fine. To me, it’s semi cannon already and there’s a bunch of talented people who create Sonamy stories.
In actual media, their relationships grows stronger and stronger. Which I’ll dub, “Untouched reciprocation,” which is common in videos game ships.
I see Amy and Sonic as best friends with crushes on each other and find that very fascinating. The hedgehogs can just be.
Though on twitter in February 2023, someone asked about Sonic and Amy’s relationship. Then Mario Kishimoto (The director of Sonic Frontiers ) answered, “Sonic is single. But what about a lover? What about Amy? I’m also looking forward to seeing what kind of love Sonic will have in the future.”
Doesn’t prove much, but it could mean Sonic Team is interested in developing this relationship more. Whatever that indicates, I’m intrigued.
All in all this is why I love Sonamy. Hope you enjoyed my over analyzed essay

Heres the thing. obviously i understand how it feels when you spend hours upon hours and years upon years on your creations and they get almost no engagement or interest. and it has been said a million times before how you shouldn't base your self worth on social media responses and all. lets just say not everyone can flip a switch in their brain and say 'i dont care and will not pay attention to this anymore'. we all want to be seen and heard even if it comes in the form of numbers of likes and shares. and im not touching on the reality that if you want to make money off your art you need engagement because that's a whole different thing entirely.
the reality is that theres a lot of people on the internet and people curate their online profiles on what appeals to them. there are few people who will share art just for the love of the game frankly. people will share what fits their 'theme' or their fandoms and interests and not much aside from this. and if you don't create works that broadly appeal to a very high number of people your numbers will plummet. if you aren't creating works that make 10.000 people laugh/relate/want to have your work on their profile you won't get 10.000 shares and it doesn't reflect on you as an artist or as a person. its also why text posts/memes always get much more engagement than artworks. it's just easier to relate to a funny text post than to a piece of art (no matter the 'skill level' or whatever).
heres what i think and what concerns me. more often than not the amount of attention you get is never going to be enough if you focus on numbers. someone who routinely gets 10k shares will often be distressed that one of their pieces only got 5k shares. and so on and so forth. i personally think people need to focus on making community with peers. truth is that 1 person who is genuinely engaged and interested in your stuff is better than 100 people who press share and forget about it, no? if you engage with other people's creations and lift them up you will notice they will probably do the same for you! try to make friends (or at least internet neighbors. you know im too shy to befriend people so i understand) share and comment on other peoples stuff in your circle and you will start making mutual connections and start enjoying art more. obviously some people don't care to engage with other people and that's fine. you will find people who do! i just think focusing on numbers instead of community is not healthy. its like. if i go into inspect element and enter 100000 likes and shares for my artwork, how is that better? let's say my piece blows up. people will scroll away and forget. but that one mutual you made because you both love each others art and projects isnt gonna forget.
also some stuff i want to say as a guy whos in it for the love of the game.
self rb your art and dont depend on stuff blowing up in a day or whatever. talk about your pieces (if you want to obviously) your process, your ideas etc. talk about what excites you and what you liked in each piece. its easier to be engaged when You are engaged in your own stuff. also im talking about all types of artists sorry if what i wrote feels too visual arts focused i love all art forever
also about ocs and worlds and so on. personally if im scrolling and i see someone talking about their ocs im interested. but i wish it was more common to put info about your ocs in a visible place for people to access. I Will Read All That. people who are interested in your ideas but can't find a write up to understand what you're talking about are probably going to be confused. so like! if you'd like more engagement with your oc content try to make it easy for people to 'jump in'. creating tags for info of your ocs/world/etc is also a good idea (i will read all that). or dont. im not forcing anyone to do anything.

One of my favorite bizarre lolita accessories:
I bought this at an anime convention in about 2011, from someone who was not exclusively making lolita fashion items. She offered a lot of anime and Japan-inspired items, and her collection of lolita items was really made with an outsider's viewpoint.
This resulted in an item that's very inventive and unusual. It's also something that's got its own flaws, but I still love the idea.
The item is this rectangular headdress.
The item is also these wrist cuffs.
It's a headdress that comes apart to be wrist cuffs. I'm going to tell you that barely-months-into-lolita me in 2011 thought this was going to be a groundchanging addition to my wardrobe. I believe I paid $30-$35 for it, and I remember barely having enough money for it.
In reality, I haven't gotten too much use out of it, mostly because the styling is a little bit tricky. In recent years, I also haven't gotten much use out of it because I lost one half of the pair/headdress until like last week. As it is, I've lost one of the four ribbons necessary to make this work, but I've replaced that with a new one that's completely the wrong color.
The process of converting this between its two forms is long and not particularly fun. The other problem with this is that it's not really great wrist cuffs, and it's not a super great headdress. It's too short to be a normal headdress, and sits awkwardly like a hat instead of wrapping the top of my head to be an actual headdress. If it was a little bit longer, it'd make a pretty okay headdress, but then the wrist cuffs would be too long for my wrist. I love the concept, but I have doubts that it could be executed in a way more effective than this.
I usually keep it in headdress form, because it's a better headdress than it is wrist cuffs. I've found that using little bow clips, I can visually extend the length of the headdress, and make it look a little bit more normal. These little bow clips are available in a lot of places in the children's section, and probably wouldn't be too hard to DIY. As a bonus, they keep the headdress in place, so I don't worry about sliding.
The artist who made this has since taken all her public shops down, and doesn't have any public social media I can link to. Mutual facebook friends have confirmed that she's doing okay, but unfortunately I do not have a way of contacting her to let her know that her cool little invention is still being used 11 years later without being, like, really creepy. So, instead, I guess I'll just share it with y'all. I think handmade lolita fashion really needs more people coming up with unconventional ways to construct conventional things. It has its flaws, but more importantly, it has its bright spots.
So, for fun, let's coord it with the only lolita dress that I still have that I also had at the time I bought this. Anyway, here's my best attempt at Momoko, about to step in cow shit.
Sadly, we're just going to do this picture in my kitchen, because I don't own a tripod for my camera, so I had to use a pan to hold my phone up.

hi i don’t really have anything specific to say but i wanted to let you know i really truly appreciate you and your music, as an artist myself (visual mainly- like drawings, painting and sculpture though i dabble in a plethora of art forms including music, and writing) and a young woman coming into my being as a soon to be young adult and as someone whom feels so deeply, your music has effected me incredibly, it has brought me genuine joy from somewhere far within my inner child and core self. I dance to your music, sing to it, and also listen to it intently, searching for meaning though it is not hard to find in the many beautiful word so carefully chosen by you so expertly. I have cried to your music, it is something still so unfathomably beautiful to me and i may have only found you recently, but even the ways in which you choose to share ur music and yourself on the internet is so special and very honest to the world and people who love you and your music. it has gotten me through some of the hardest times i’ve ever experienced in my young life as of late, and it brings a wondrous warmth and admiration for you and your work.
i wanted to close this with a thought and prospective i thought you might enjoy, i think you music looks like those large beautiful collections of small birds flying in smooth motions & waves bending with itch wind almost as a visual representation of the wind itself, i think it is one of the most unique and almost holy experiences to see this natural movement that is backed by the strength of the birds community, and mutual respect and understanding of each other’s love for life, i think this is what your music has instilled in me.

happy early birthday :)) thank you so much for your kind words. it’s messages like these that really give me the courage to keep going. especially online. it’s been really hard finding a balance with the social media / artist aspect of things. it’s hard to tell if it’s worth all the work but you’ve made me feel very seen with this letter. it’s almost as if you’ve reached into my psyche through the art and thus all the work has become worth it.
it’s funny you say that about birds, air, water etc. those are all motifs on my album. i do call you guys my love doves. that happened on accident bc someone called me a “sweet dove” once and it filled my heart with so much warmth that i wanted to send it back to the world tenfold.
i think i love birds and flying and air bc i was always really attentive to blue birds as a child. i grew up right next to an airport too so airplanes flying are practically the soundtrack to my childhood. not to mention, my fave ghibli film is castle in the sky- which is about flying.
i think maybe i’m just making music so we can all pretend to fly.

who are your art inspirations?
Oh gosh, a lot of people. All of my artist friends and mutuals inspire me pretty much every day, but I can't list em all, so ,,, here's some less obvious answers!
I'd say it's mainly comic artists who can consistently do super loose and fun sequential art that feels fresh everytime, with the occasional illustrative piece. Artists with fun interesting shading styles or somehow no shading at all, yet still managing to make absolutely captivating pieces that feel rendered in comic form, while not looking like "too much" or too polished.
^^ First artist that comes to mind when I'm asked about inspirations is the visual mastermind behind Saga, Fiona Staples, her stuff just itches my brain SO right because it feels really… real? Despite the stuff she draws being absolutely crazy shit, the expressions and looseness of it and just the raw feelings is so cool… I appreciate how her illustrations still look like her sequential stuff, it's always very "in the moment" ykno. It's hard for me to read Saga in a single focused sitting because I just end up distracted with art inspo the whole time HAHA-
^^ As far as art styles go, I'm well aware of how much I've taken and learned from IncaseArt, which is kinda.. Funny. Don't look him up if you're a minor lol. If you recognize this No You Don't. Regardless I absolutely love how he draws diverse people and faces, the way he renders skin, hair, backgrounds,,EVERYTHING,,,, There's a lot of nuance to his style that I've subconsciously started using in my own the past few years. I don't know how he does it man x.x He understands colors SO well ahghghghg
^^ Feel obligated, but reluctant, to say SarahDraws, she's had some crazy bad controversies !!!!WHICH I AM BRINGING ATTENTION TO HERE SO DON'T GET MAD AT ME!!!! but I'm still absolutely enamored with her art. Gotta give credit where credit is due, man u.u But, seriously, even though lineart is my favorite part of the process, I envy how amazing she can make any piece look with her insane sketchy lines, I genuinely don't even know if she does a sketch beforehand or just cleans it up--it looks so beautiful either way. Love her dark goth imagery paired with a super bright accent color WAAAGHG
^^ Growing up I know I was inspired by a lot of...erhm ... Traumacore and guro artists DollieGuts and ReinaGoth, but how much their style ended up sticking to mine,,,I dunno! You can kinda see it I guess? I was pretty innocently into artists of this scene but ultimately shied away due to a phobia of mine LMAO. Still love their work though! I know DollieGuts is the reason I line with such a crunchy brush, considering I used their brushes on Sai for a few years straight 🥴 (also love how much they've been playing around with their style lately...mwah. love to see an artist breaking out of their comfort zone)
^^ It goes without saying I get inspiration from a lot of fandom artists, too, Wilddaggers and Nenanugget definitely come to mind,, I feel like they both use super satisfying colors and a lot going on despite not having full shading, which I hope to achieve so badly.

no, i technically named myself! i had troubles learning languages when growing up, and whenever speech therapists tried to teach me to say my birth/legal name, i kept on saying "mimi" instead, so the nickname stuck! aside from that, my other nickname kao is taken from a maplestory npc of the same name,, a character who's supposed to be the "future version" of your player character, so things keep going full circle
When was the last time you cried?
a few nights ago;; i was rewatching some satoshi kon films, millennium actress and tokyo godfathers definitely got to me esp since i'm a sap in the first place, his filmography does not hold punches when it comes to hitting emotions
Do you have kids?
i have endless neglected OCs, other closest option is the local murder of crows i befriended ghghkdj, there's some new fledglings i've seen fly after me along w the adults (you can tell bc young crows have the insides of their beaks be pink!); aside from that, i think this stray black cat that visits me a lot could count, but he could be an old man and not count, idk how old he is
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
i do like dry and/or deadpan humor (esp in the "jokingly points out the obvious" way), so sarcasm's def a thing i like to sometimes hear and say! regardless, it's still p lowkey and modest, i don't want to be overly dramatic or annoying w sarcasm
What's the first thing you notice about people?
for both online and in-person, usually how they present themselves, like visuals (clothes, icon, art style, etc) and how they talk and interact!
What's your eye colour?
brown 👁️👁️ they're super dark they're nearly black too
Scary movies or happy endings?
BOTH,, TECHNICALLY,,,,,, i'm a fan of both "horror" and "kind" stories esp for elements of both something something harrowing ordeals of existence, the struggles, etc but still earning better outcomes and surviving esp w loved ones, and one time i got compared to (Both) miyazaki and ito in this meme 😭

i don't know, maybe crocheting and plush sewing...? or befriending animals esp those w "bad luck" stigma like crows or black cats

Soemthing very interesting I noticed about the BFDI and II fandoms is something I like to call “The Shipping Square”, and I don’t mean a love triangle, as there isn’t really any romance in either of these two shows, but more so 4 specific characters that fandoms are drawn towards when it comes to shipping. It’s something that I can only explain visually, so I will.
While not exactly the same (I’ve seen way more people make Test Tube and Paintbrush content than Leafy and Coiny content) the idea’s still there. It’s still way more prevalent in the ii fandom since those 4 are actually on a team together, it still applies to BFDI too.
Of course, many somewhat ships with these characters exist out of these shipping squares (in ii there’s Silver Spoon x Paintbrush and Cabby x Test Tube, for instance, and in BFDI there’s Flower x Leafy), the ones in these squares are most popular, not just for the character but in the fandoms themselves, which is very interesting to me.
I don’t really have a point to make with this it’s just food for thought

what is fandom all about?
This week my group and I presented on Fandom! It was a really interesting topic for us to cover (and one of my favourites from this unit) and we enjoyed sharing our thoughts and personal experiences on it.
Speaking of fandom, I'd like to share more of my personal opinions on it. Growing up, I used to be a part of many fandoms such as Littlest Pet Shop, Sylvanian Families, loom bands, slime, Ariana Grande (I used to have an IG fan account for her where I posted edits), Justin Bieber (I remember owning a Justin Bieber t-shirt but let's not go into that) and probably many more which I can't necessarily recall right now. I can say that being part of a fandom is definitely really fun and it gives you something to look forward to every day. It's something that just gives you pure happiness and releases dopamine. One thing I noticed about being part of a fandom is how much money you would spend on it (concert tickets, merch etc.). I used to have a huge collection of Littlest Pet Shop toy figures and houses so when I sold them off, I realised how much they actually cost. Other than that, when I was in my slime era, I used to experiment with SO many ingredients and recipes to perfect the texture of my slime. After finally perfecting it, I would sell it to my classmates in secondary school. I still remember the looks on teachers' faces when they realise a 14-year-old is doing business in school so eventually I had to stop selling my slime but I did receive a lot of compliments saying I was clever for a kid (lmao). Looking back, it was one of the peaks in my childhood and represents an experience that I would never forget.
What fandom am I part of now?
I am a fan of music in general but to be more precise, I enjoy R&B, hip-hop and also pop. One of my top favourite artists would be Frank Ocean. The picture above shows a guy hugging one of his albums (Blonde) with headphones on which is such a mood. It's one of my favourite albums of his. Well, actually he only has 2 studio albums available on Spotify (Blonde & Channel Orange), 1 visual album (Endless) and another debut mixtape called Nostalgia, Ultra. If you have never heard of him, please go check out his music (warning: beautiful music for sad people only). Besides Frank, two of my other favourite artists are Mac Ayres and Daniel Caesar! Yes, I think by now you can tell that I love R&B.
Toxic fandom
I'd also like to share my thoughts on toxic fandom that I have seen and experienced. I realised that being involved in a fandom can be scary sometimes because other fans may start interrogating you in a way where they think they know about the fandom more than you do. For example, if you mention you like Arctic Monkeys they would start "testing" you to see if you are a "true fan" based on your answer by asking which is your favourite song/album or asking you to name all the members in the band etc. (I find that it is more common if it is a music artist or band). I mean, I understand that one can get defensive over their own fandom and classify other fans into groups because of their egos/superiority complex but damn it can be quite intimidating. Can't we all just say we are a fan without being judged so brutally? I do understand their POV though, they simply think that you should only call yourself a true fan if you know EVERY SINGLE THING about the band/celebrity from height to blood type lol (I'm over exaggerating but there is some truth in it).
In my own personal experience, I remember I wore this oversized Metallica t-shirt from H&M and one of my mutual friend got pissed because I wasn't an avid listener of the rock band BUT I know of them. Okay, before people get mad, I can say there are two sides to the story. First of all, I admit that I too would be annoyed if someone was wearing a Frank Ocean t-shirt if they NEVER heard of him at all because number 1, you don't deserve to be wearing it if you are not a fan and number 2, you are ignorant for wearing a shirt that you don't even know the meaning of. However, I've sort of grown out of that mindset because what's the harm of wearing the shirt though? It's literally free advertising. At the end of the day, it's just a t-shirt and people have the freedom to wear what they want. Some people may just like it because of the design but still, at least KNOW what the shirt means. I mean, I've kinda learnt my lesson. To be safe, just educate yourself before wearing a band tee. What's worse is some people still think The Rolling Stones is a brand.

Hmm, 5 things out of all the things that make me happy -
#1 - Books. The stories they carry. The smell of the freshly printed pages of the new paperback books. The intricate lettering on hardcovers. The maps and the illustrations of scenes and every visual piece it has for aiding the reader's journey. I have books surrounding me everywhere lol.
#2 - Hot drinks. Tea. Coffee. Hot chocolate. It feels like swallowing ichor and letting it warm you up with every joy life has to offer. Drinking something hot and tasty feels like a warm hug from the inside out, if you know what I mean?
#3 - Writing. I have been a very introverted individual, and writing has always been my salvation. It has been the balm my wounded soul needed in order to heal. It is also the reason why I have loved and lost and met so many people (in real life and online) that I have come to cherish and love. It is the reason why I am alive and the reason I can live life a bit easily, and breathe a little lighter. (Truly I do not know what I'd be like if I didn't write)
#4 - Cafes. I have recently visited Starbucks (it cost me a fortune though) and Costco, and more than the drinks(to be honest, the drinks were pretty good too), I love the ambiance. I loved talking to my friend and my mom and sharing a drink with them and just existing and letting the world surround us and yet pass by us. It felt almost homely. I am actually hoping to revisit those places. Or try to look into more independent cafes I can visit on my own so I can sit there and drink a cup of coffee and study, or draft my manuscript.
#5 - Music. My dad's side of the family has always been more artistically inclined. So I did school choir and learned how to play a few instruments (years of lack of practice had made me forget them all though, so tragic; but I might start learning guitar/violin again so there's hope after all). Music also influences my writing style heavily, but I am a sloth so I need to organize my writing playlists in order to get some work done. :')

sometimes i really think about how i have so many dear lovely friends that are just. crazy good visual artists. and i go a little fucking insane bc you guys can just. draw stuff. you can see it in ur head and get ur pen or ur pencil or ur digital stylus pen thing (i dont know how digital art works im sorry) and you can just. draw it. how does it feel to be a god amongst men. to be able to draw the little images you see in your head. this BAFFLES me i CANNOT draw and i specifically Cannot Draw People i am CURSED by having sooo many little pictures in my head and NO technical skill to draw them. i am in awe of visual artists every day. i envy your skills so terribly and i am so deeply impressed at the same time. my beloved artist mutuals do you ever think about the gift you possess?? do you ever look at a piece of your art and think “wow this was in my head and now its right here and not in my head any more. now other real people can look at it with their eyes.” like THINK ABOUT THAT. what i would give to be able to draw. i love you all so much. i see ur art on my dash and i am filled with awe and love and pride like that is my FRIEND. they DREW THAT. and its BEAUTIFUL. look how TALENTED they are!!!

I keep seeing that post go around and around about how folks coming to Tumblr from other social media platforms might not know that content here has to be reblogged to be seen and get attention, but the wording of it focuses almost entirely on visual artists and that gives me pause.
The message is wonderful and meaningful, because there are SO MANY artists and visual content creators out there, and their work absolutely deserves to be seen and shared. I’m a huge proponent of practicing what you preach, and I think you can see from both of my blogs that I deeply love, support, and share art and artists of all stripes! Nothing I’m about to say here should take away from that.
But. I have a but.
BUT. But. You should also be aware that because Tumblr is primarily so visually-focused, writers and poets and anyone else who creates mostly text-based content here are already at a disadvantage. It’s not a competition; I’m just saying that from my own experience and the experience of many other writers I’ve talked to (some of whom straddle the line as both writers AND artists), it’s much less likely for text-based creations to get likes and reblogs. It is much harder to draw attention to your work and gain readership if you don’t already have hundreds of followers, if you don’t have some kind of image attached to your writing; it can still be quite difficult even when you do. There are exceptions to these rules, to be sure, but it’s true. So don’t forget to hand out love and reblogs to your local writers just as much as you do for your artists!
And yes, the disconnect does make sense; engaging with text-based works often does require more of a commitment, more time, more attention span. Much of the time, so does creating them. Just like many other people, I also get on tumblr if I want to waste time or distract myself from other things, and I can understand if people don’t want to dive too deeply into a story that takes them offsite, or an into essay that requires focus. I get it! Shorter writing pieces get reblogged more often than longer ones for that reason, I imagine.
But as a writer, and of a friend of many, many writers who care deeply about their ideas and their craft, I can attest to the fact of how demoralizing it can feel when something you’ve worked on for weeks or months or years barely moves outside of you or your friends circle because people might be liking it, but they’re not reblogging it; they tell you they loved it, but the post dies a slow, sad death exactly where you left it. As the original post discusses, liking written content is lovely, but it doesn’t create spread or engagement. Reblogging does.
Treat your blog like an archive of things you might want to read later! Leave a little trail of delicious poems or fanfic treats that you think your mutuals might enjoy! Boost a post because your friend is awesome and you know they’re insecure about their work! Boost a post because their brain is huge and you want everyone else to know what incredible ideas they have! Because their poetry makes you weep with joy! Share things even if they are not your cup of tea personally, simply because there are so many people out here creating content for the enjoyment of others as well as themselves, and it will be the right cup of tea for someone else!
TL;DR Support your writers by reblogging them too!!!

The next few weeks went by in a breeze. It was now mid December and you were excited for the holiday season. Philippe Cohen Solal & Mike Lindsay: A Pop Tribute to Outsider Art

Outsider visual artist and writer Henry Darger’s fame was essentially happenstance, so it’s fitting that Philippe Cohen Solal’s decades-long obsession with Darger is chock full of coincidence. In 2003, the member of longtime neotango group Gotan Project found himself with a day off on tour in New York City and decided to venture over to the American Folk Art Museum, a choice that would change his life and culminate in Outsider (¡Ya Basta!), April’s collaborative album with Tunng’s Mike Linsday, the first adaptation of Darger’s words in music.
At the museum, Solal, unaware not only of Darger but of outsider art in general, saw a Darger work, and, as he told me over the phone earlier this year, “fell in love.” Looking closer at the details of the work, he saw something he recognized: the name Kiyoko Lerner, who had lent the work to the museum. The very same name of a woman he was set to meet the next day in Chicago as recommended by a mutual friend back in Paris. The friend suggested they meet due to their love of tango. “We met and talked a bit about tango,” he said, “but quickly, I asked her about Henry Darger.” She began to tell him exactly who she was, the story that’s become increasingly well-known in the annals of Chicago cultural history.
Lerner and her late husband Nathan (himself a prominent Chicago photographer) were Darger’s landlords; Nathan discovered Darger’s work in his “very messy room” shortly before Darger’s death in 1973, most notably his 15,000+ page novel In The Realms of the Unreal as well as his magazine-traced illustrations and watercolors accompanying the book. (The book, a fantastical epic about child slave rebellions, would go on to inspire visual artists and musicians for decades; indie rock band Vivian Girls took their name from characters in the book, and Darger would even be referenced in The Venture Bros.) Nathan immediately knew he had something special, and he and his wife took control of Darger’s estate. Darger would start to become formally recognized by the art world, his work prominently featured in museums and documentaries. Nathan died in 1997, and Kiyoko would continue to operate as head of the estate and donate her collection to various museums across the world.
In 2006, Kiyoko flew to Paris and met up with Solal at the first Darger exhibition in the city, at La Maison Rouge. It was immediately when he left the show that Solal had the idea to make music inspired by Darger’s art. “At the time, I didn’t [even] know that [Darger] wrote lyrics,” Solal said. “I had no clue.” In reference to Darger’s war between children and adults, Solal had the idea to write “adult music for children,” or vice versa, and wrote a track that wouldn’t even end up 15 years later on Outsider. He visited Kiyoko at her Chicago apartment. “I spent a few days immersed in his art. I didn’t know precisely what I wanted to do, and then I discovered he wrote lyrics. It very much changed the project.” Nobody had thought to put Darger’s lyrics to music, and Solal wanted to put his stamp on the increasingly large pool of reinterpretations of or references to Darger in the arts and culture world at large. Kiyoko put him in touch with art historian Michael Bonesteel, who led Solal to more lyrics.
Not wanting to go at it alone, Solal got the idea to do a collective project adapting Darger’s lyrics to music with various friends. He reached out to the likes of Calexico’s Joey Burns and Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner, but Lindsay was the one who really stuck. Solal and Lindsay were fans of each other’s bands, and the latter visited the American Folk Art Museum while on tour at Solal’s recommendation, he himself rediscovering Darger’s work. In 2015, there was another Darger retrospective at the Paris Museum of Modern Art, and Kiyoko, who attended, suggested to Solal that he reveal his song adaptations of Darger. “I didn’t tell her I only had one song at the time,” he laughed. That was his inspiration to reach out to Lindsay. “I thought maybe I’d do a 5-track EP. I called Mike and reminded him of my project and asked him, ‘Are you ready to work on that with me?’”
Solal and Lindsay separately wrote the melodies and basic arrangements of the songs that would end up on Outsider, and they recorded and produced the record together. Lindsay introduced Solal to Northern Irish musician/singer/multi-instrumentalist Hannah Peel, who would voice the Vivian Girls. Solal asked Adam Glover, a singer he knew through his manager, to be the voice of Darger himself. (“He was very young...but he can sing like Sinatra or Dean Martin,” Solal said.) The four created an album with Darger’s words using traditional pop instrumentation and song structures but also children’s instruments; Peel even created her own music box to play some of the melodies. Sometimes, the words were spoken, as on “Hark Hark, My Friend, Cannon Thunders Are Swelling”, while other times the vocals are isolated in harmony, as on “We Sigh For The Child Slaves”. “We know more about Darger as a painter and visual artist, so it was important to have Darger as a storyteller,” Solal said. Furthermore, the group wanted to capture the raw spirit of Darger’s art by rendering the voices distorted, shifting their pitch to make them sound almost out of tune. The instrumentation, meanwhile, ranges from slinky electric guitars to strings, and even barroom-style piano on the penultimate “We’ll Never Say Goodby” [sic]. “With our small team, it was lean and simple to do this music,” said Solal. While most of the titles and words were taken directly from Darger, down to the spelling of “Goodby”, the album touches on Solal’s story, too. Instrumental interlude “851 Webster Avenue” is named after the address of Lerner’s apartment Solal visited for the first time, when his fascination with Darger really took off.
Solal can’t exactly pinpoint what ever fascinated him about Darger, both in general and as the world changes, but he has some clues. “At the time, what was interesting to me was it was clear [Darger] was a self-taught artist, and maybe I felt a bit moved by that because I’m a self-taught musician,” Solal said. “I never went to music school, but I understood that without any specific art education or practice at an art school, you can create something...Henry Darger is an amazing example of someone who created his own world.” Darger’s style of illustration, his drawings traced from magazines, made up for the fact that he wasn’t a technically great drawer, and it complemented his heightened sense of color. Moreover, Solal feels kinship with some aspects of Darger’s childhood. Part of the inspiration for In The Realms of the Unreal was that Darger himself was sent to an asylum that put children to work. “When he was a kid, everybody called him crazy,” said Solal, “But I’m sure he didn’t think he was crazy. I remember when I was 9 or 10, I thought I was crazy. Nobody called me crazy, but I thought I was.” He found commonalities in, simply, being misunderstood.
Solal also questions what it means to be an “outsider” artist; in reality, Darger spent most of his time inside, confined in a room creating fictional worlds. Funny enough, according to his diaries, he was fascinated with the weather, tracking the accuracy of the predicted versus actual weather, but that’s about all for the outside world. On the day JFK was killed, for instance, Darger had nothing about it in his diary entry. He chose to interact with the world through the magazines he would trace, and through collections of items like Pepto Bismol bottles, National Geographic issues, and broken glasses. He wasn’t much for interpersonal relationships. Not only was Nathan Lerner unaware of Darger’s artistic enterprises, but neither were the young artist couple with whom Darger actually shared his apartment. Solal thinks that Darger’s resistance to presenting himself as an artist was as a result of his childhood experiences. “If the outside world was not so mean to him, maybe he’d be less scared to show who he was to the rest of the world, even just to his neighbors,” he said. “It’s funny that we call him an outsider. He was more an insider but was protecting himself from the outside world.”
Perhaps, subconsciously, the more that creative folks learn to look through Darger’s eyes, the less likely his, or any genius goes unnoticed. Solal remarked that many of the folks involved in Outsider almost had to “unlearn” their craft. Andrew Scheps, who mixed the album, at first didn’t know the context and gave Solal and Lindsay a product that was “too clean;” Lindsay explained Darger’s story and the importance of having strange-sounding narrative effects in the records. “When he worked [after that] on the mix, we found Henry was back in our songs,” said Solal. The individuals involved in coming up with animated videos for each of these songs, French animator Gabriel Jacquel with art direction by Pascal Gary (aka Phormazero), also had to abandon their fundamentals and learn to draw like Darger. Overall, exploring his work provides admirers like Solal the opportunity to dig deeper, from figuring out how to bring Outsider on stage to “finding new ways to tell the story,” like podcasts, interactive maps, short films, and Spotify playlists of Darger’s favorite music. “This man is full of mysteries,” he said. “I hope my future is Outsider for a while.”
