Hero and Partner Week, Day 7: Free Day!

Last up for the free day today is a little drawing of my own team! After I made all this art of Neo and Skitty (now named Penelope) for this week, I decided that I should actually try to come up with unique designs for them. Now all of my previous illustrations of them are officially outdated. Oops.

I'd gotten attached to the depictions of them in my previous Hero and Partner Week drawings, so I didn't want to change them too much, but I still wanted them to be recognizable as original chararcters and not just general depictions of an eevee and a skitty. I'm pleased with Neo's redesign, but I would like to make Penelope a little more unique in the future. If you're interested, you can read more about them and their alternate universe under the cut!

This will be my last submission for Hero and Partner Week. I had a blast drawing and writing for this event over the past month, and I really enjoyed seeing what everyone else created as well. Thanks so much for hosting this amazing event! I'm already looking forward to participating again next year and seeing how much I've improved as an artist by then!

Neo

Neo is an odd-colored Eevee who woke up in the Tiny Woods one morning unable to remember who she was or how she got there. She occasionally dreams of a strange Pokemon atop a frozen mountain, and after learning about the legend of Nintales, she comes to the conclusion that she must be the human in the story who angered the deity and abandoned her partner Pokemon, Gardevoir. She feels obligated to help save the world because she's (allegedly) the one who brought about its destruction long ago, but secretly she feels she's not capable of it and is hoping for a way out. Neo can most easily be described as cowardly. She lacks courage and prefers to run and hide rather than fight and stand up for herself. She doesn't wish to hurt others and cares deeply for many Pokemon she knows, but when push comes to shove, her strong sense of self preservation takes control and she always puts herself first, even at the detriment of other Pokemon. She also lacks confidence, and this causes others to be distrusting of her and lack belief in her abilities. Neo tends to make promises she can't keep because she either doesn't think it through all the way or just wants to help and please others, which makes her seem more unreliable to those she lets down. Her hastiness also hurts her ability to think for herself. Neo can problem solve well when she is forced to slow down and reason out the situation, but when she rushes herself, she doesn't consider all the possibilities and can come to the wrong conclusion. Neo came to trust Penelope quickly because Penelope was there for her when she didn't have anyone else to turn to, but she also sometimes regrets forming a team with her and wonders if it was the right choice because of her struggle to show bravery and do the right thing like Penelope does.

Penelope

Penelope is a young Skitty who was raised in Littlegrove, a town on the sea northwest of Pokemon Square. Her parents, a Meganium and a Delcatty, tend to a pecha berry orchard and a small garden of other berry and herb plants, and her mother is a skilled weaver who makes scarves and other textiles using the plants grown in town. Penelope and her younger sibling Orion were often tasked with travelling to Pokemon Square to sell Delcatty's scarves to the Kecleon brothers and the many rescue teams that visit town, but since a mystery dungeon formed within the Tiny Woods, Penelope has been making the trip alone. When she learns that she and her partner must be the ones to save the world, she immediately rises to the task because the lives of her family are on the line and she's determined to save them, even at the cost of her own life. Penelope is courageous and quick-thinking with a strong sense of integrity. She's highly motivated by her commitment to and love for her family, especially her younger sibling Orion, and she'll never make a promise that she thinks she can't keep. Her strict moral code often makes it difficult for her to be understanding of those who act selfishly, and it also makes her prone to overworking herself or throwing herself into danger if she thinks it will help someone she loves. She is highly confident in her beliefs and her decision-making abilities, which allows her to act quickly on instinct. However, this also makes her stubborn and unlikely to follow in other Pokemon's footsteps or take their advice without good reason, and because she's still young, her beliefs and decisions aren't always backed up by experience or knowledge, leading her to make some poor choices. Her personality is often at odds with Neo's cowardice and self-interest, so they have a rocky start to their relationship.

One early spring day, Penelope was travelling through Tiny Woods with a new stock of her mother's pecha scarves when she came across an odd-looking eevee named Neo who said she had lost her memory. While she was distracted by the stranger, Gengar of Team Meanies snuck up on Penelope and attacked her. Because of her Normalize ability, Penelope was unable to fight back and Gengar stole most of the scarves she was carrying. Neo fled in the commotion, and Penelope chased after her, assuming she was working with Gengar to steal the scarves.

Penelope found Neo at the entrance to the Tiny Woods's mystery dungeon, which appeared as a deep chasm in the forest floor. She confronted her while Neo couldn't escape, but Neo claimed she didn't know anything about Gengar or his plans to attack Penelope. As they were arguing, they were approached by a Butterfree who needed help because her child, Caterpie, was lost in the dungeon. Penelope agreed to help and forced Neo to come with her because she didn't yet believe that Neo and Gengar weren't working together.

After finding Caterpie and reuniting him with his mother, Penelope took Neo to Pokemon Square where they decided to stay the night at Kangaskhan's inn because Neo didn't have anywhere else to go and Penelope didn't know how to fix the problem of the stolen scarves. While in Pokemon Square, she asked Neo to form a real rescue team with her in order to help earn back the lost money.

Looking Back on 2023

Heyyy folks! Long time no news from me huh.

I'm struggling to think of what to even say about my silence. I've not been doing so bad I'd call myself depressed, but I'm doing a tad worse than just a slump. It's been a rough 6 months, not because of one big thing. Instead, a bunch of medium-sized reasons all piled up on top of each other to leave me extremely drained. I've mostly been working on the two commissions I still had in my queue (thank you to my commissioners for being so patient with me, I'm so sorry to make you wait so long <3). I've done a little personal art other than that but didn't have the leftover focus to keep up with sharing it on social media or writing up any updates about my situation. I've pretty much only been active sharing things in my art discord. I'd like to say I've been doing better in the last month or so, but I hesitate to make any promises at this point! We'll just have to see how things go :)

Artfight

So you were promised a more in depth artfight review but I think I missed the right timeframe for that... instead have this look at 3 years of unfinished artfight thumbnails from my new year's wip clean-out!

Year of Art Summary

All things considered I made a lot of art this year, and I'm really happy with how most of it turned out ☺ I did a bunch of experimenting with more playful techniques and color schemes and I think they suit my style a lot. I want to try and much those limits even more next year to see what kind of fun art I can create! Something with colors specifically really clicked in my brain after that witch drawing I did in April, before then I would spend a long time figuring out the perfect color scheme and doing a bunch of adjustments but ever since that drawing things have really been coming together super quick? I'm not sure what changed but no complaints from me.

Life Drawing Summary

I rarely post my life drawing but I've been keeping at it! Actually, I put together a few pdfs showcasing all my life drawing going back to 2022, you can download them for free in my itch or ko-fi shops! :>

I also put together a yearly art improvement comparison going back to 2015 that I was planning to put here. However, seeing how long this is already getting... I'll make a separate post for it.

Commissions

I've been gearing up to open commissions again after that unintended hiatus. I don't want to open slots until I'm sure I'm back to being able to finish them in a reasonable timeframe, so I've been using that leftover energy I do have to think about revamping some things and new styles to offer. Back in November I ran a survey on what people want to see from me (it's still open if you'd like to fill it out and help me get more stats!)

here's a preview of what's to come based on that & my whims:

- stamp commissions were super well received so they'll be added to my main repertoire

- A combo of me reading too much dun meshi and wanting to offer some kind of comicky commissions led to this idea of comic pages of characters eating together, I have a couple examples in progress, when they're done I'll add this style to my main offerings!

- I'm still not 100% set on sketchpages but I like the idea of them so if this test goes well I'll add them as an option

Onward to 2024!

I already completed my new year's resolution on day 1 of 2024, it was to pet a cat. I've made a second one which is to get a library card whenever my visa is approved and I move back home. It's been something I've been wanting to do for a while but never got around to, hoping this will be the excuse I need to do it.

Art-wise it's not a new goal, but I've been trying to focus on improving my rendering! Though I've also been playing around a lot with screentone... the two don't have to be at odds 🤔

I'm dedicating this year's personal art time to making new references for as many ocs as possible with nude bases so I can easily design new outfits for them whenever I want to without fully making a new ref from scratch.

Otherwise I'm just trying to take it slow, work on things one at a time and see what happens from there.

I finally beat Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth!

It took a while, and my playthrough was broken up by a couple longer-than-desired hiatuses due to personal stress and life things, but we got there in the end.

Here we can see my buddies, along with Sting the Wormmon (based on my brother's Wormmon), taken from a screenshot I took early on, as soon as I was able to collect my nine friends at the time (plus Sting, who is still a friend).

Goodbye, Digimon ReArise

Digimon ReArise has finally shut down, and with its leaving, I miss the time I spent there; the adventures I had with it, the fun I had. Most of all, I miss Herissmon, who I feel especially sad to see part ways.

But, all is not lost, at least for a few of us. Apparently, some fans managed to set up a back up for the game, allowing those of us with accounts to transfer our progress to the back up before the game shut down for good, and I managed to do this only a few hours before the end.

That said, while I'm happy to get to experience the game for a while longer, I still feel sad that, in reality, it's over. But just because it's over, doesn't mean we have to leave it behind, you know?

Thank you Digimon ReArise, and thank you Herissmon. I'm sure, someday, we will cross paths again, and we can once more be friends.

With that, I'll leave this post with the last image I captured of Vee in the widget available for the game. A fitting finale, I think.

Well today was certainly exciting!

Just as I was getting ready to go to work, my brother's partner wormmon decided to stop by for a visit, out of the blue! Instead of turning him away, Vee and I offered to let him come with us in our Vital Bracelet, and so we got to spend the day together and catch up a bit.

Overall, i think we had a good time. I know he and Vee did.

He really seemed to enjoy the flowers in our garden center, and I think the purples complimented him really well, personally.

I'm writing this for my queue before I go to bed, and it seems Wormmon's decided to stay with us for the time being before he heads back. I hope he manages to have a good time with us while he's here!

the Dress Question from the Terror Camp Keynote

(I'm sure somebody else has already transcribed this part of the Keynote, but I wanted to have it on my blog, so I went ahead and did it just in case.)

Q: The Terror is a show that revolves around questions of identity, and few characters exhibit this theme more perfectly than James Fitzjames. In the run-up to Carnivale, we see him contemplate a costume he later discards in favour of his Britannia costume. Was the scene of him contemplating the original dress meant to draw attention to the fact that there are two transgressions happening in his final costume, one of gender and one of nationality - as he himself admits, he's not even fully English - thereby making his costume not only gender drag but also nationality drag?

A: Yeah, that's a great question. I mean - yes. I'll - I have a simple answer, and then a more complex answer. The simple answer is that men often dressed up as women on, on these ships. It was just a - it was - I think it's, you know, from a Shakespearean tradition, right, of actors performing both genders.

But - we made a special point of putting Fitzjames in that dress, because it seemed like, this was a man who... had finally, in that moment, gotten what he had wanted from the beginning, which is full command, right, and I think - as happens in our lives, when we achieve the presumed goal, other goals that we didn't even know were built into our identities come cluttering in. Do you know what I mean? Finally demanding attention from us. And I think Fitzjames had been performing 'Fitzjames' his entire adult life, and I think when he was finally Fitzjames, Commander Fitzjames, with a capital F, in charge of a whole expedition, I think that's when probably his greatest moment of fatigue at performing happened, do you know what I mean? And so, we tried to make sure that everything after that moment was about him opening doors to parts of himself, parts of his identity, parts of - you know, every aspect of who that - who he is, just opening things up, and creating the mess that he had been so afraid of and so vigilant about for so long. If that answers the question.
