BMC TUMBLR REMAKE (!!PLEASE READ THE WHOLE POST!!)

okaay if youve seen my recent posts youll know that we MIGHT be doing an actual remake of be more chill right here on tumblr dot com! run by me ofc but i might need help down the line so you can sign up for that. its gonna be a completely fan made thing like im talking singing voice acting drawing music editing everything

ive gotten quite a lot of positive reactions to that post so ive made a google form if youre interested in participating! options include major roles minor roles editors artists and more take your pick

if youre not the best at singing then you can sign up for ensemble, for example the bg voices in guy that id kinda be into. no worries at ALL if you cant sing or draw or anything, theres gonna be a speaking ensemble too, for example the overlapping shouting in the smartphone hour. you can pick more than one role, for example ensemble + visuals, cause this is not a very big fandom so we're gonna need duplicates but if you want a major character role i'd prefer if you just stick with that tbh. if you want a major character role you can also pick more than one character! you can specify you want to try for rich, the squip and brooke or whatever. youre not actually auditioning for those roles yet i just need to see if theres enough people to cover every role

EDIT YO GUYS im sorry i forgot but deadline is end of the month! don't worry about timezones, as long as it's april for you you can still sign up. because people continue to consume it so there's not much motivation to change the formula, need to bring back George and Weezie, Jefferson's was a good show, Sinbad was a good show, hell even Martin wasn't half bad.

They'd hate The Jefferson's now because meritocracy is bad somehow, but how else are you supposed to move on up to the east side, to a deluxe apartment in the sky, at least most people have to work for it, especially if they started at the bottom.

bad ign reporting aside, i was also pretty upset at first since no femc and the answer! but then i saw a good point someone made about the femc case:

persona 3 reload has reportedly been in development for four years. and in that four years thats standard time to build a game from the ground up, maybe even too little – anyone who's been in game dev can tell us that. p3re doesnt reuse assets, too, it's completely from scratch. so having femc isnt simply a matter of model swap. they'd also have to program the UIs and make everything pink - sure, that could be "easy", but there's also the changed social links and team dynamics (more writing to be done), weapon system and all that (more coding)? so its like... i'd be actually surprised if they managed a femc during those 4 years. its quite a lot of work to re-adapt base p3 as is i feel and modernizing it. also i feel like atlus themselves wouldnt want to do their character and her fanbase wrong so of course they wouldnt fkn slap on a few pink menus and call it a day. they surely want to rewrite the s links and everything too in accordance to her. art takes time.

(with all that being said bullying atlus for femc is warranted actually maybe then her inevitable dlc might come faster lmao )

similarly, im fine with no "the answer" now despite being its #1 defender. theyd have to completely rework the 30:2 hour grinding to story ratio which is just not sustainable on a modern gameplay perspective. that also takes time.

its why i made this post actually. i somehow trust them, and i feel like most of us can stand to chill a little and have healthier expectations. as in not overbloated and not have the bar set in hell either (altho we should also do that too)

and i know, like anyone who's played this game, it means so much to so many people. and thats why its maybe impossible to please everyone, because its so many different things: a game that saved their life, a funny goofy lighthearted one where you catch demons, the most depressing persona game ever (altho i feel like p2 would beg to differ on that one-), or for me personally, a game that just made me cry man.

and because it means so much, everyone wants to see it be the best it can be!! and that means having hamuchan. i get that all of this riot energy is out of love for the game, really. but. yeah.

a remake seems like it's "less work to do" since the foundation's "already there" and i dont know how many people worked on p3re but like. i highly doubt theyre just sitting on their asses pissing off fans on purpose lol. (or maybe they are and im just too optimistic damn 😭)

Wanna redo my old Bleach autism post as it’s pretty much gone anyways due to my remaking and I’m older but I’d like to do it with multiple characters this time. HOWEVER, I’m already so far into my reread I’ll go fucking insane if I do it right away as I’d have to GO BACK and reread again. Anyways, the focus was gonna be Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Kisuke, Byakuya, Mashiro, Kensei, and Riruka. I tried to branch it out a bit so there’s main characters and then random ones but a few more is fine. I have more headcanons than this I just don’t wanna overdo it by including TOO many characters. This could be a fun project if I do it with someone else that feels the same way! Maybe get a person per character? Ichigo will be...a LOT, I’m sure. I don’t wanna forget that I wanna do this so I’m typing this out. I am VERY focused on Digimon right now and my one track mind shows but I do actually intend to do this. It won’t be an edit or anything like that. A long post more like? I can talk a lot but I’m not writer, y’know? But feedback and advice will be something I’ll take from my fellow autistic Bleach fans, naturally! Please look forward to it! And if anyone wants to join in on this, hmu!

this is kind of a rant but hear me out, i was thinking back to when i joined this fandom. i was in awe, everyone was so excited and determined, some people would write fanfics, guides, headcannons and some people would draw arts, memes, and even make playlists. i honestly thought its one of the best fandoms (it still is), so many talented and dedicated fans, not to mention overall positive (lets not mention the mess that happened last year). i found it funny now how we all would spend our time gushing and clowning (or got clowned 🤡) about pixels and now the game that we all love is going downhill. this is not a hate anon btw, im just grateful to all of you in this fandom! what really makes this fandom is the people, and whatever will happen with the future of fusebox i dont think this fandom will end soon. im happy that i got to meet lots of amazing people here and thank you to all of you who creates stuffs for the others (including you, vena)!

at this point we might as well make our own s4 lol i feel like the game characters are now our own (technically fb but yknow) because of the fanfics, hcs, arts and other stuffs that we create so im half convinced that we can make our own s4 or just remake our version of litg 😂

on another note i saw people demanding fusebox that they owe them explanation, honestly i dont think we owe them anything. fusebox owes the staffs who got laid off, after all the claim that they have the best work environment (or whatevs, at this point idc what their "pros" are), they decided to abandon them, especially during this trying times. such a disappointment

I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU ANON

i was just talking to a fellow litg stan and it's very true. we, the players, actually make the fandom active and alive all year long, while fusebox posts and plays around with dumbass ads on social media.

i've met amazing people through this game. yes, we had a few bad apples rolling around here, but we created such a positive community under the litg tag, especially here on tumblr.

this was the first time i joined and participated on a fandom, and i'm very thankful for some of the people that i got to meet.

BUT YOU'RE ALSO RIGHT ABOUT THE FANS OWNING THE CHARACTERS.

because the ones fusebox introduced to us are nice, but what we did to/for/about/on them is far superior, no questions asked. there are magnificent fics out there, different scenarios, better art and concepts, like-

this fucking fandom is so talented, and i must add here, our material is good because we don't have a man with an unwashed ass regulating what we put out there. that's why you can name so many good fics and pieces of art that will stay with us for so long.

now, here's the thing... i do agree with you about the company and how they owe EVERYTHING to the employees. between explanations and paychecks, all the success they had are due to what that team brought them, up until they decided to call different shots.

the writers brought it and made us fall in love with the characters, and who approved fast solutions and cheaper art style for s3 (i'm not saying it's bad, but i am saying it doesn't fit in with the game's narrative) are the ones that deserve to get some shit.

but i also can't help saying this: as a company, fusebox owes the fans communication. said fans are the ones keeping the doors open and for that the least they could do is issue a post talking about what went down and why, besides giving the employees some PUBLIC recognition for their work, and clear recommendation for future employers and companies that consider hiring them, along with a fucking 'THANK YOU' note to tie it up real nicely. that's the bare minimum.

but fusebox owes the fans a little something, and that is some apologies. not for firing their crew, but for everything they did in the past. the neglect towards dark skin/lgbtq+/vagina owning players and characters because W-O-W.

that's the very least they could do but they're not even pretending they care. then they go ahead and use lgbtq+ characters on their banners and icons like they matter. the nerve!!

Sorry if this is bothersome, but I noticed you're a mega man fan and I've wanted to get into the series myself, and I'd like to know what game you'd recommend to a first timer. =)

i do not recommend the 1st game of the classic series for starting because its very hard but if you wanna try it be my guest it is how everything started but thats just my preference that i myself wouldn’t play any of the first series games but maybe megaman 11.

i do recommend the X series or the zero series because i like those the most and there is a easy mode included (if you have the switch ver) also it isnt that hard once you get on your feet with the game. my very first megaman game i played was the zx series but that was because i had watched a youtuber playthrough all the games already and knew the story up to that point and i wanted to play a megaman game.

if you want megaman but its not megaman i do recommend battle network watch the anime and play the games cause its different but the same material kinda. the battle network series isn’t that easy its kinda hard not really but you can play that first if you want, it kinda all depends on what kinda gameplay you like what you start with but storywise if you wanna play it in order then play it like this guide below

chronological order of games and small explanation of what is happening in these games also in comics related to the games story

the original megaman series

a old man name dr light creates a robot called a robotmaster his name is rock

the original series has 11+ games 2 tv shows? and 2? comics and mangas. you dont have to watch the tv shows or read the comics if you dont want to (but it puts some story to the games and i like it and i recommend it) the comics and the tv show is just a retelling kinda so its perfectly ok not to get into all that BUT AGAIN I LIKE THEM AND I WOULD READ THE ARCHIE COMICS

the X series

100 years have passed sense the first series and now you are a blue robot name X fighting confused robots called mavericks

the X series has 8+ games a few mangas 1 remake 1 novel? and a anime episode to show what happen and how it all started

i enjoy the x series so i can actually tell you how to play them

Mavrick hunter X/X1 X2 Xtreme 1 X3 Xtreme 2 X4 X5 X6 command mission (<- alternate universe) X8

Mavrick hunter X is a retelling of X1 that comes with a little anime episode to watch so you understand what i just explained under the X series the game wont explain what the the day of sigma (thats what the episode thing is called day of sigma) watch it you dont have to watch it but watch because i said so.

command mission is played like a rpg and doesnt really matter but i enjoy it so i recommend it cause its a fun time

you dont have to play Xtreme its just a replay of X2 and X3 but a small story that doesnt really matter to the plot or story at all but if you wanna be die hard fan you can i havent played those games because X2 is kinda difficult and i dont wanna play it again.

the Zero series

a alternate universe split from X6 100 years (again) a war happen and now you play as a red robot name Zero

you will learn about Zero in the X series because he is X best friend me even telling you about Zero is kinda a spoiler but not that much so its fine.

the zero series has 4 games alot of audio tracks and a retelling that is down right silly of the games im currently reading myself

the zero series is great thats all im gonna say it becomes super easy if you have the switch ver because easy mode makes it super easy if your just here for story.

the ZX and ZXA series

after Zero 4 humans and robots live together but there are some side affects to that you play as either a girl name Alie or a boy name Vent sometime after this game you play as either a boy name Grey or a girl name Ashe

it only has two games and it is very easy ZXAdvent is after ZX

if you play as Aile you meet and Grey Vent and Ashe do not exist

if you play as Vent you meet Ashe Alie and Grey do not exist

this is because Vent is Alie if Alie was a boy and vice versa its like picking the boy character or the girl character but for ZXA if you play as grey Ashe dies and if you play as Ashe grey dies there is no saving the other thats just how it be for some reason.

BUT LISTEN TO THIS i believe in the Alie and Vent are siblings and fanonly i can say grey and ashe coexist so dont worry about that too much.

the megaman legends series

3000 years? later you play as a completely different character name Volnut who looks like rock from the first series but he isn't.

legends has 3 games legends 1 legends 2 and The Misadventures of Tron Bonne

it is a disappointment this series was never finished but you can still play it if you are really die hard i have never played this game cause i do not own any psp or whatever original system it came on but you can watch a playthrough if you are interested cause it did come after ZX in the story of the game.

parallel universes that has nothing to do with the original games has a complete different background and is just a stand alone spin off parallel universe.

the battle network series

in this world you play as a fifth-grader named Lan Hikari and his NetNavi MegaMan.EXE exploring the internet because everything is the internet now.

battle network has 6+ games a few mangas and a anime with 4? seasons one still being translated unofficially.

mmbn1 mmbn2 mmbn 3 mmbn4 red sun or blue moon mmbn5 team protoman or team colonel mmbn6 cybeast falzar or cybeast gregar

the battle network series is like megaman but what if it was completely different from what the megaman games actually you really dont have to play and replay both blue and red but i recommend it cause thats what im doing if you wanna play through the whole game but with a different cast of characters who you may start to love more then others

red has protoman.exe and a whole other cast of characters while blue has colonel,exe and a different cast of characters what im doing is i played through red because there is a character i really like in that run so im just gonna play blue to the boss and just skip on over to the next game.

the starforce series

Man Battle Network and Mega Man Star Force series, are canon to one another but not the other series. so this comes after battle network.

im not sure myself what happens here but you play as Geo who has a alien named Omega Xis and they cross fusion to make themself megaman

i have never played or watched the starforce game or anime but its just like the battle network series thats all i know

play the X series watch the day of sigma play the zero series play the battle network series watch the battle network anime I WILL EVEN GIVE YOU LINKS TO WHERE YOU CAN WATCH IT WATCH THE BATTLE NETWORK ANIME

i recommend watching all the animes

hi! ive been following your writing for a few years now and i drop by periodically to check if you have anything new posted, and im really surprised that you seem to be enjoying the untamed? im curious what you think about the show - its story and characters, the acting, the production, etc. idk if you know, but the untamed is the most successful example of a current trend in chinese entertainment, where popular online novels centered around a gay romance is adapted into a 'safe' drama.

due to the many explicit and implicit restrictions imposed on creative media in china, many crucial plot points have to be changed (often badly) or removed, including the nature of the relationship between the main characters. the untamed is considered the most loyal adaptation so far, but like all other works in the genre, it received criticism for weak acting and queerbaiting. that's why im really curious about what you think of the show as it is, as itself, free from its context.

if you're interested, you could also check out guardian! it features much better performance and chemistry by the leads imo, but the story was heavily botched bc the original incorporates and reinvents a lot of classic chinese folklore beautifully and stuff like that is considered disrespectful and not-pc. i think it's really sad how so many great pieces of writing with complex world-building and plotlines are simplified into... idek what to call them, but just, less than what they are.

im sorry this turned into a rant. as a mainland chinese person with oh so many frustrations about our current society, it's hard to comprehensively describe my feelings about the untamed's popularity. it's the first mainland chinese show/movie to gain this much organic interest abroad so i should be glad? but, but. anyway, yes, im sorry.

There’s no need to apologize for ranting, but I admit to some confusion as to whether you want your question addressed or the rant. Because I’m me and tend to be thorough, I’ll address everything, in reverse order.

First of all, I’m sorry that this show is sad to you. I’m sorry that the popularity of it is difficult. I’m also deeply sympathetic to your frustrations about your society, as I too am deeply frustrated by my own.

Secondly, yes, I’m aware of the context of The Untamed. I’m aware that the book it’s based on is a BL novel, and that, in order to align with Chinese politics, overt queerness was erased from the adaptation. I’m aware of the censure laws of gay media in China. I’m also aware that some aspects of necromancy and morality were adjusted to make the show more palatable for general audiences, but I’m fuzzier on those details. Lastly, I’m aware that the popularity of the show calls attention to certain things, such as fanfic, and that attention results in more censorship,

The fact of this erasure and this censure provokes a lot of questions: by consuming this product, which contains erasure and censure, do we engage in the erasure and censure? By posting gifs and writing fanfic and talking about this product, do we increase its popularity, thereby encouraging additional erasure and censure? By increasing the popularity of this product, do we diminish the popularity of the original gay morally gray canon, thereby decreasing representation? Do we discourage other authors in China from writing explicitly gay morally gray material? In short, are we allowed to enjoy this media?

I don’t know the answer to these questions. However, I do know that boycott is a very effective tool when it can inflict economic pain on the producer, or when it can exert pressure on an entity to change. That said, I feel like a lot of the calls to boycott certain media these days are a lot like telling people to stop driving their cars to stop climate change: it’s suggesting that individuals can solve the problem, which presupposes individuals are the problem, and therefore fails to address the scope of the problem, or present the possibility of a real solution. Not watching The Untamed isn’t going to change laws about portrayals of homosexuality onscreen in China, partly because the laws in China are a much bigger problem.

The other part of it is that The Untamed is coded queer, so if you run a successful boycott against it, you end up with . . . less queer TV. I know a whole lot less about China than I do about the Hays Code, but if you had told gay people during the Golden Age of Hollywood that they couldn’t enjoy movies that were coded queer because they weren’t explicitly queer, they’d have said you were crazy. In fact, many people will tell you that media that was coded queer was a big reason we got more explicit queer stuff later. And as I’m sure you’re aware, the US is still fighting that battle . . . partly because it wants to sell movies to China.

So then there’s a question about whether me, an American in the US, liking something coded queer from China but not explicitly queer--does that encourage Chinese censorship? Should I only support texts that are explicitly queer? But the answer is the same--it’s not addressing the scope of the problem, and by supporting texts that are coded queer, you could be paving the way in the future for something brighter.

But you weren’t talking about boycott! You were talking about your discomfort with the popularity with this show, which I accept. I understand feeling uncomfortable. I can only hope it makes you a bit more comfortable to know that plenty of fans are deeply aware of the context and do wrestle with the question of what liking this show means in the context of a society that would never allow aspects of the original to be portrayed onscreen.

Thirdly, I’m not against trying Guardian at some point, but by comparing the acting and chemistry of the leads to The Untamed, I feel like you prove our tastes are very different in these regards. I love the acting of the leads in The Untamed; I found their chemistry off the charts. It’s okay you don’t feel the same.

Lastly, you asked my opinion of The Untamed: its story and characters, the acting, the production, sans context of the canon upon which its based and censorship laws in China.

a. I love the overall story, but the plot has deep plot holes. Quite a few segments do not actually make sense to me, because the plot is so haywire. However, I’ve never cared that much about plot, except when it gets in the way of characters and themes, and for the most part, this plot serves its characters and themes, except when the parts they leave out are so confusing that I cannot follow the story. As for the story, it feels like it’s built for me, because ultimately it’s about moral decisions and how to make them; it’s about guilt and paying for mistakes; it’s about learning, changing your mind, and remaking yourself. Really, I’m not sure there are many stories I love more--except they killed my favorite character, and I almost quit. So, that certainly put a damper on things.

b. I love the characters most of all, although the villains are really two-dimensional. However, large parts of the plot are not Hero vs Villain, they’re Hero vs Society, and then some Hero vs Himself in a way that suggests the Hero is no longer a hero. I could talk about the characters forever, but suffice it to say I think they’re really strong. Also, the relationships are really exquisite, particularly when it comes to family dynamics. Unfortunately, they killed my favorite character off. Also unfortunately, there are six women in this show, only two of them are main characters, and every single one of them dies. It disgusts me.

c. I think the two leads are exceptional, in particular Xiao Zhan . . . when he’s not being too broad, which he is quite a bit. However, I do wonder how much of this is direction and production style, because in many instances, he’s quite subtle, and the choices he makes are astounding. Then there are times where it’s like they needed more footage, or wanted to drive home a point, and he turns on the extra, and it’s awful. It could just be him, but I actually feel it’s the case with most of the actors, which does make me think it’s a directing issue. Meng Ziyi never really has that problem though, because she is the most perfect of all. But then take He Peng, who I actually thought could be incredible, but every scene was just SO BROAD that I began to feel sorry for the poor dude having to act that part. But there is nothing to be said for Wang Zhuo Cheng, who really is just terrible, which is sad, because it’s a great part.

d. Production-wise, it’s really hit and miss. So much of the locations are truly beautiful. A lot of the costumes are too, unless the shot is too close. I actually don’t mind the wigs; I love the long hair. The CGI is terrible. And then while a lot of the shots are beautiful, some of them are awkward, and the pacing is really difficult, imo. It really seems like they wanted to drag it out, and there are so, so many scenes where I’m sort of embarrassed that we’re in the same scene or that we’re still looking at someone’s face, or that everyone is just standing there waiting for the shot to finally end.

I will say that film is a language that does differ from culture to culture. It could be that both the broadness of the acting and the awkwardness of the editing are my cultural lens based on American and a lot of western film. When I watched older Hollywood films, the acting is a lot more broad and maybe a little less “true” feeling, but I understand that it’s not the case everyone in the past was a bad actor. It was just a different style, so I’m not sure I’m equipped with the cultural knowledge of Chinese acting, cinematography, and editing to be able to really judge the value of these things.

I do know how I feel, which is that the editing is the biggest hurdle for me while watching the show. However, I feel that the beauty of it makes up for a lot, and the strength of the characters and themes really carries it.

I noticed you say you collect figures and plush but I rarely see you post pictures. Can you show pics of your personal favorites in your collection 😳

Ahhhhh sure!! I only have some of my plushes on display because I have so many and not enough room to show them all and my figures are kind of scattered and I don't want to take the time to move them all into one place and move them back to their spots, so I'll post separate pictures for those. My room’s lightning isn’t great and it’s too late for me to bother getting a stool for better angles, but here are some really quick photos of some of my junk.

Plushies! These are just some that I’m fond of, the oldest one here is the Squirtle in the back that I’ve had since childhood and the big Kirby dates back to the release of Squeak Squad. There are too many from when I was younger to have really displayed them up here but I still keep them around. I really love the Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah Beanie Babies and the Healslime.

Cloud and Kiso Kai Ni! Cloud came with the version of FFVII Remake I bought and Kiso was hell to get.

Sophitia, Shaman King, and Idolm@ster figs (and Voltron, I was a big fan of the original show as a kid... I don’t really want to have to defend myself for owning this but people can get really obnoxious about anything relating to the reboot). Shaman King was one of my earliest manga, so these figs are special to me. Riamu, Chihaya, and Takumi are my favorite Im@s girls so I had to get them.

Fate figs (and beanstolfo)! Santa Alter’s bag has its own stand.

JoJo! Giorno is probably my least favorite protagonist in the series, but I found him for cheap so I decided to grab him anyway. I really love the Jonathan one poking out from behind Jotaro.

These are some Nendos! I’m actually missing the Kirby from Kirby’s Adventure, but I think they look good as a trio! All the way in the back is Oono from Hi-Score Girl which was normally $80 to get online since Good Smile stopped manufacturing her, but when I visited Japan I managed to find her unopened for ¥4,000!

And the Steins;Gate shrine featuring a Kurisu fig, Kurisu Nendo, metal Upa, and forest fairy Upa! I was really into Steins;Gate in high school.

I also have a bunch of Amiibo and Transformers, but those are really toys so I didn’t include them.

(how i spent my summer vacation anon) i know this isn't an opinion that is AS heavily shared but. i think personally that ft13 part 3 is the worst of the series. not particularly because of the quality INHERENTLY. but the fact that it really marks the shift of the characters going from 'teens having fun' to 'vapid teen stereotypes' and also bc its where most of the misconceptions and pop culture opinions of the series comes from. (e.g., ft13 is about stupid horny teens, Jason is a lumbering idiot, it has corny and ugly effects) not to mention the almost complete separation from camp crystal lake is really jarring aswell.

Unpopular opinion, sure, but also not unheard of. The same guy who made those youtube documentaries on how Rob Zombie ruined Halloween and how NLC ruined F13 also made a similar one on part 3 (some of yall know what im talking about lol). There’s a small group of fans who really don’t like part 3, but big enough to be notable.

You’re right to feel this way, and I would agree p3 is definitely the most “classic” F13 movie in trope regard, but as someone who really likes p3 I guess I’ll share my piece on why the things you list don’t bother me.

I made a long post explaining how p3 solidified F13′s identity, but also a lot of the things present aren’t absent from 1 or 2. Debbie and Andy are both reminiscent of Marcie & Jack from p1 and Sandra & Jeff from p2. The joker character definitely wasn’t new, p1 had Ned and p2 had Ted (p3 breaking the rhyme chain definitely is a crime). Rick is your typical male love interest like Paul or hairy chest ascot legend Steve Christy.

So, with the exception of the two stoners, all the tropes are there from previous movies. What I would say, though, and I think you’ll agree, is that the trope types in p3 are just less well written which may make them feel different from the past 2, and thus more like cliches. For example, if it weren’t for her shoved in backstory (which is my least favorite thing in the movie), Chris would be a total flatline. The only thing that really makes Chris standout is how much she kicked Jason’s ass

I’ve said for years, often to defend movies like p8, FvJ or the remake, that p3 has some of the most bland characters when stacked up against the rest of the series. However, I don’t really come to F13 for amazing characters cuz even the best aren’t that great. I come for Jason, and he’s great in this movie, and I think this is where you and I really differ in opinion

I think this movie has some of the best kills in the series. The 3D stuff is cheesy, sure, but it must be pretty fun when actually seeing it in 3D. The eyeball kill may not be the best effect, realism-wise, but it’s one of my favorites in the franchise. It always makes people squirm even if it doesn’t look super real. I’d like to see it redone in a new movie. All the other kills, though, look great imo

I’d also disagree that Jason is a lumbering idiot in this one. This one did begin the emphasis on height for Jason, but Richard Brooker plays him quick and mean, and I don’t really get any stupid vibes from him. Just viscous. And the final girl circuit in this, mentioned previously, is one of the best in the series. That’s where this film shines the most. Chris gives Jason a real fight, it’s super entertaining.

Also mentioned before, my biggest problem is the almost-included rape backstory, but again it was scrapped onset. The “implication,” debatably there at all, could easily be explained away as something else so I can overlook it.

So, yeah, I see where you’re coming from, but it doesn’t get under my skin. I feel that the stereotypes were bound to come anyways, and they already kind of were. Halloween also got burdened with the horny teen stuff. Wouldn’t you say, though, that movies like Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X perpetrate the horny teens stereotype worse than part 3?

Why I Can't Call Persona 3 My Favourite Game - A Case Study About Atlus And LGBTQ+

TW: transphobia, homophobia

Okay so here's the gist: you might know the game Persona 5, I have praised it a lot in the past to my friends. I think it's a good game. I also think the the games that come before it in the Persona series, Persona 4 and Persona 3 are great games, I even used to call Persona 3 my favourite game of all time, but I can't do that in good conscience anymore. The company that makes all these games, Atlus, has a long history of homophobia and transphobia.

Let's start with their most famous game in the west, Persona 5. Apart from the only canon gay characters being very problematic, both in the original game and in the remake, we have the problem of the dating routes. As JelloApocalipse puts it in his amazing video about Persona 5: "Can I date... A boy? No! That's weird! Feel free to date this alcoholic adult though!" Not to mention you can date your surrogate little sister as well, but God forbid we let a silent protagonist that Im supposed to project to date a boy!

Now let's go back to the previous game, Persona 4, which is the game with the most LGBTQ+ representation Atlus made, with arguably two LGBTQ+ characters in the main cast. Now before we get into them, you should know that the main theme of Persona 4 is accepting yourself, and that it's most praised part is its character development and characters in general.

The first character I'm going to talk about is Kanji. Kanji is very obviously gay. We explore his hidden desires in the game and I can basically summeries them as being MEN. Kanji is supposed to be this tough, manly man with a more feminine soft spot inside, but he's ashamed of that feminine side of him, and also of being gay. The thing is, in this game about accepting yourself, Kanji NEVER actually accepts being gay. It's the butt of numerous jokes, but not once, even in the culmination of his character development, does he really accept being gay. This one can be argued to not actually be homophobic, but I find it quite problematic that this game about self acceptence doesn't seriously touch in being gay.

The next character is MUCH more controversial: Naoto. Naoto is a female(?) character. When s/he is first introduced, the main cast think that s/he's a guy, because s/he wears masculine clothing and doesn't have a noticeable chest. Later in the story, we get to explore Naoto's mind, and we find out that s/he's in fact... Female! Now you can watch the full scene of Naoto's awakening on YouTube, but I can see two ways of interpretating it, neither of them looking very good for Atlus: The first being that Naoto wanted to transition just to escape being a women, and the second being that Naoto's wish to be a man is childish. The first option is a famous TERF narrative: trans men are just women that wanted to escape womenhood. The second is also bad because it shows us that being trans is childish. As someone that recently came out as gay and started to explore their gender identity around the time I first played Persona 4, both Naoto and Kanji really rubbed me the wrong way.

And finally, we Catherine and Catherine: Full Body. Now I never played these two games, and I've first heard of them while researching on this topic, but it's so problematic I couldn't not include it.

In Catherine, we have an actual, canon trans character! Hurray, right? Nope. Just like Kanji, she's the butt of many jokes, and the fact that she's trans never seems to be taken seriously. Not only that, but she's deadnamed not only in the game's manual, but also in its credits.

When the remake of Catherine, Catherine: Full Body, was announced, fans begged Atlus to fix the original's transphobia. But Atlus did them one better, by making it worse! Now, you can date a trans women, and in the trailer announcing this, the main character can be seen looking at her chroch in horror. In the trailers, she's portrayed as what's called a "trap" in anime terms: a man pretender to be a women to trick men. Now if I understood correctly, these clips were actually taken out of context, and her true identity is way out there, but whether it was for publicity or something else, they intentionally made it look like this character was a "trap" in the trailers.

Now, you might be asking yourself if you happened to read this entire essay: why have I made this? What's the end goal? Well, I said in the beginning that I used to call Persona 3 my favourite game of all time. After playing Persona 4 and further researching about Atlus's past, I just can't bring myself to say that anymore. Now does that mean that I think that you're a homophobe or a transphobe for liking Atlus's games? Of course not! I still play those games, and I still think they're really good. However, I think that their past and present with LGBTQ+ representation should be wildly known, especially because so many new fans are coming in from Persona 5. I think people need to know know that Atlus has some really harmful games under their belt, but people can do whatever they want with that information.

I intentionally tried to keep this more factual and less opinionated for this exact reason. People need to know about this, but they decide what to do with this information.

This is going to sound super weird and I'm not including names in case you publish this but I would prefer if you won't do it. anygays...I was (before Wtfockdown) on a chat with Skam fans and was so much fun until some people started to be shitty with some other people, so many times they were super annoying and honestly rude to other people, they shitty talked much and I kinda stop participating on the chat, one of those times (this is more recent btw) your name handle was brought as in you were talking with this specific blog and this person told you to stop with your spoilers because was disrespectful and you react badly to this (or that's what I understand) apparently this person liked you before, you both even talked as mutuals but sudendly they thought the contrary and told us all you were disrespectful and rude, I honestly didn't put more attention to it since at this point I just entered the chat to check if there was something new as in info or details of the upcoming skam remake seasons since I'm not good at checking all socials or catch things or read all tags so the chat was kinda my summary but I didn't really check the whole conversations specially if it wasn't over Skam, then when I discovered the chat wasn't that helpful either anymore I forget about this chat and I got off, later when Wtfock last season was on their like second or third episode and Skam France was starting again I encountered your blog again because of your reblogs and I started reading you and honestly I really really enjoyed it as in a fun clown time, that's when I double notice this people was just shitty people, I keept contact with some members of that chat and apparently more and more people started to complain about them but apparently no one could say or do anything because it seems like anyone that didn't share their opinion were a problem to them and either were ignored or just bullied (since I wasn't in this chat anymore I don't know if this all was true or how happened or on what extend)...

What is funny to me is that one of this person's is a big wtFOCK owner blog, this person also raved about how cool was to be an extra and how they talked with interns and crew (on s4, don't know if this person was an extra before that or after that) and how respectful they were about it but criticizing everyone else, Im gonna be honest this blog was really helpful specially on the translations for me, so for that I'm really thankful but the whole thing was super ironic and apparently this people (btw is not just one were more than 1 but there's only one with a big blog) were eliminated of that chat because people were tired of them plus they discovered they had another chat where they shitty talked about people!! Hahaha omg this is so teenager stuff...the point of all that is that I'm grateful for people like you that doesn't hide behind a "perfect good face" it seems honest and is actually respectful to the crew and cast or even the show when they don't actually deserve it haha even if you received hate so I really hope that now that Skam is getting a big break you don't quit on it because I love your blog.

I won't respond to it again but am sick and tired of "the rumors" circulating about me and that as yet I hadn't even defended myself against because I didn't want to make it a whole s/he said situation but am really sick of it now. It also allows the person discussing me to create their own narrative about me and who I am as a person because I am not part of the chat to defend myself (or anyone this happens too) so whoever it was that engaged in those private chats your doing nothing but spreading gossip because you aren't even allowing the person your talking about to have a voice and respond to the criticism. You're just piling on for sport under the cloak of these private chats or group centric chats that anon testifies to cultivating a toxic atmosphere of silence. Anyways I find it funny that my response to my told mutual (who at one time I considered a friend) was interpreted as disrespectful or that I reacted poorly too because to be honest their message came out of nowhere to me. I hadnt spoken to them for sometime and so out of nowhere I got the message I have included below and my response. You tell me who comes off abrasive? and lacking empathy in this situation? and be honest if you think I was a dick to them I want to know but I actually really felt i tired my best to be understanding and respectful but its clear to me my actual response was framed in a way to fit their narrative of me and present me in which ever way they wanted too to others. Some expanded thoughts on FF7R under the cut [SPOILERS]

So! Overall I freaking LOVED the remake and I can’t wait to see the rest! Midgar feels so alive and expanded, you really feel attached to everyone, it’s... muah! Honestly a lot of the points I’m gonna make are more nitpicks than anything. I won’t make any commentary on the gameplay because I watched a let’s play instead of playing by myself(im broke and cant afford a PS4 and $60 game >_>)

So the designs are GORGEOUS... no, the entire GAME is gorgeous. Midgar looks so good and detailed, there’s so much great implementation of color theory! Cloud is sooooo good looking!!! Barret and Aerith and Sephiroth are all GORGEOUS! Reno Rude Tseng and Rufus.. AAAA!!! The only slight complain I have is that- okay so Tifa looks AWESOME, but I honestly wish she wasn’t so skinny. Like she’s a melee fighter, but her waist and arms are so thin! I wish they gave her a bit more tone and muscle, but, oh well. I honestly can’t stop staring at the character models they look SO good

Plot-wise, I really like most of the changes/additions they made! Especially with Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie. They’re wonderful and I love them and did I mention that I love them because they’re just so dorky!!! And good!!!

Honestly, I like that Aerith is actually written to be likeable. I know that doesn’t seem like much but a lot of games fall into the trap of telling you that you’re supposed to like the female protag(looking at you, Breath of the Wild) or tell you that she’s a strong character, but they fail to show that, so the player feels like they’re just being told to get attached. Aerith, though, is actually really likeable in this game!!! She’s cute and down-to-earth, really dorky and even snarky, easily seeing past Cloud’s tough-guy act, and she can fight! It’s just so nice to see a game that shows a strong female protag instead of just telling you.

Legit everyone is horny for Cloud and I’m so here for it

Okay so like. I love Roche. I didn’t at first but he quickly grew on me. He’s so awfully chaotic and I just- I love him. I’m mad that he was just kinda forgotten, though. Like! He could’ve shown up at the ending chase!!!

THEY REALLY WROTE HOJO TO BE AS CREEPY AS POSSIBLE HUH. Like I’m not complaining because like he’s basically the reason why everything happened, but! Ahhhh he makes me squirm he’s a creep with a gross science fetish and I wanna stab himmmmm

Okay so. President Shinra is a little bit TOO stereotypically evil? Like having a gold statue of himself and not even caring about sabotaging one of his own reactors when one little console gets destroyed??? Like it’s almost comical how evil he’s written to be. Though, I do like the scene where he calls Barret out on his ideals, that was neat!

Nowww, Heidegger Scarlet Palmer and Reeve? MUAH. Heidegger and Scarlet are written so sadistically but like in such a likeable way, especially Heidegger. God I hate them both but you just love to hate them!!! Palmer is HILARIOUS- I love how he’s written to be the spoiled kid whose parents forced the other kids to include him so he’s just there even though he doesn’t do anything. And Reeve? Well...

SO REEVE IS MY FAVORITE ATM SINCE WE DON’T HAVE VINCENT YET, AND REEVE IS JUST... <3 <3 <3 Okay so first off, his design is perfect. He doesn’t really stand out in the same way that Heidegger Scarlet and Palmer do. He just has a normal build, normal suit, normal hair slicked back- he just looks like a normal employee, totally inconspicuous... which is very fitting considering how he ends up being undercover and needs to look inconspicuous ;)

Though Reeve shows clear signs of overworking himself and being emotionally abused by his coworkers which... sucks. I mean it’s good writing but I feel so awful for him- Like you know it’s bad when someone just has to hold up a hand to get you to shut up and sit down. I like that he tries to do good things but steps down when he’s told to, that he’s empathetic but cowardly. It does a great job at setting up his character arc in future chapters <3

Okay so one thing- I thought the build-up for the plate dropping was amazing, but honestly... the plate itself falling was slightly underwhelming, to be completely honest. Like- I just didn’t feel the impact that a plate falling would have! Mainly because, you don’t see a single death which is interesting. Like you see people running from falling debris, but legit not a single death is implied. Honestly? I thought the scene would have been far more impactful if they showed:

Seventh Heaven actually being destroyed

The people topside reacting to the ground beneath them collapsing and them falling to their deaths(They only tried to evacuate Sector 7 slums! Not the topside!!!)

More people actually being implied to have been crushed(No, Im not counting Wedge). Like in the original FF7 there’s a scene where someone’s watching tv and you see the plate falling from outside the window- and there’s a reporter just doing his normal shit before he suddenly looks up and things go to static- like- thats an intense scene and I wish the remake did more stuff like that!

They do great showing people REACTING to the plate falling which is why its so appalling to me that they dont show much of the actual devastation DURING plate fall

I LOVE that Cait Sith shows up at the plate falling! It shows that Reeve actually tried to warn people(something he asked to do and was denied earlier), even if he was too late. The only problem I have is that new players who dont know who Cait Sith is will be horribly confused as to who and why he’s there???

Also, when the crew goes back to Sector 7, you don’t really... feel the impact right away. Keep in mind, an entire section of city just fell onto another section of city WITH the supports holding it up, there should have been way more rubble. Yet, the area where Seventh Heaven is just... looks like it was hit with a major earthquake. There should be way more rubble, like mountains of it. It’s weird since the opening cinematic really captures the scope of how huge Midgar is, but the plate falling just doesn’t really show the scope of how much devastation there was to losing an entire plate.

The scope of it is done a bit better when climbing up Sector 7, but I still feel like the weight and scope of destruction isn’t lived up to its full potential.

Okay so- Wedge and Biggs. ... Yeah, it takes away from the impact of their deaths to have them not die. I mean, I can’t make a total opinion on this just yet, because the other parts haven’t come out yet, but... if FF7R is gonna keep them alive, they better have a good reason for it tbh.

They might have done a little bit too much foreshadowing with Cloud and Aerith? Like I like Cloud having memory issues, it’s kept pretty vague... but him going “Mother?” with Jenova is a little bit too spoiler-y. Like yeah you gotta tease his whole thing but like- don’t give it away this soon!!!

I also don’t mind Seph showing up as much as he does. Like, in the original, you don’t even hear about him until close to the end of the Midgar arc. Obvi since the remake ONLY covers the Midgar arc so far, I totally understand bringing him in sooner. Again, having the clones existing might be a little too spoilery for the big twists later on, but I can let it slide since it’s still treated as very “wtf” and I’m sure anyone new to the story hasn’t put it together yet.

Did I mention how much I love Seph he’s so creepy and his eyes are gorgeous and he’s so intimidating by just being there

And the Whispers... I honestly didn’t like them. I kept forgetting that they existed honestly. They just feel so... detached from the plot. I don’t mind adding new content/story, but the Whispers just... didn’t feel well-implemented. They also felt really campy towards the end. Like, the fact that they could un-stab Barret and shield Avalanche from car accidents while they were escaping? They were legit like “no you can’t die even if you tried because fate” and takes away any tension of the scene because... well, they know they cant die.

That being said, the ending was interesting. I uh. It was interesting! So they actually defeat fate itself in order to change... who knows what. The future, maybe even the past??? I’ve got many thoughts on this

If the future is changed, that can be exciting since people who know the original’s plot won’t know what’s gonna happen next so like- okay!

If the past was changed... y’all know I’m talking about Zack. Was fate changed so that he could live? Keep in mind, we see Whispers surrounding Midgar before they dissipate and Zack’s like “ohey did I get all of em?”, implying that fate would have forbade Zack from ever getting to Midgar. Having the team defeat fate means... Zack may have now reached Midgar.

Is alternate reality/timeline stuff going to happen now???

Cloud’s character revolves around Zack dying. What’ll happen to Cloud now???

I feel so bad for people new to the plot who don’t know who Zack is.

Nomura... you madman.

So with the ending... Nomura and Squenix is setting something up. They’re going for something huge. I uh. I fear, honestly! Because this could very likely get WAY too ambitious and WAY too confusing(Think Dream Drop Distance’s bullshit plot), and could totally fall on its face and end up being Squenix’s biggest flop of all time. But... if this succeeds and they actually pull off whatever they’re trying to pull... holy shit. I would be floored.

I honestly am a bit afraid that the plot will be too confusing for new players. Like- no one would know whats going on with Zack unless they knew the original plot, so like while this would be a great game for FF7 fans, I’m really worried that it won’t be a good game for people new to the series.

Cloud in a dress is the greatest thing and I’m so happy they kept that scene I love him so much the entire scene is so queer <3

But overall, despite some nitpicks, it was a SUPER SOLID game and I’m soooo hype to see where they go with it! I wanna see Cait and Yuffie and Cid and Vincent!!!!!!!!!

ooooh ive been waiting for this one. We watched this together on discord so you know my general feelings but Im happy i got this ask lol.

The new movie that everyone seems to love and adore.... that I dont. It was a pretty middle of the ground, meh overrated af movie. Not bad, just nothing special. I enjoyed watching it sure, but not something I have an inkling to return to anytime soon if ever. It was just ‘there’ for me.

First, I’ll say the good stuff. The visuals looked really pretty. Nobody was THAT out of character of the existing cast (save for the ending), which i feel weird to have to even mention it as a positive, but nothing really stood out to me as a defining moment for the little cast we had besides Goku’s “youre not a bad guy, i can tell” or w/e. SUPER SAIYAN 1 IS STILL GOAT. It looked soooo good in this movie i wish we couldve kept it the whole time instead of Blue. But i will say, Blue looked much better in this movie than the series. The darker-blue with the lighter blue eyes was a nice change from instead of the ugly bluish-green the series did. Also the aura looked better. Backgrounds like the ice area and even Planet Vegeta were amazing. Action was great too. little Bulla was cute. The OST i liked (the chanting really grew on me) and Blizzard is a banger i love that song. Oh and the aritisic license they took for the fusion scene with the reds and blues spiraling together was great

Anyway thats all the positives I have lmaoo

This film includes Minus and I already went in depth on why I hate Minus with a passion and why it’s the worst thing to come out of modern Dragon so yeah moving on. But the fact that they devoted screentime to Gokus backstory which ultimately served no purpose to the story of the film and couldve been used more valuably elsewhere.

I said the action was good, and it was, but it almost too good. At times it was so fast to tell that was going on and really lessened the impact for me. Like when they went into the other dimension or whatever, Gogeta went blue and Broly went LSSJ (idc if the name is different name, itll always be legendary SSJ to me lmao) so ast it was a blink and you miss it moment. like what? those moments shouldve been given even a little bit of focus.

Next the cast. Goku and Vegeta. AGAIN. snorefest. no Gohan, Piccolo is just there to show them the fusion, Goten and Trunks are still kids and look like babies (and Pilaf gang is with them which is another can of worms), no Android 17, who the series established as one of the top 4 fighters on Earth.

Do we get any of that? Nope. Just the two Blue and Bluer fucking again and again I. dont. care. anymore. Their dynamic is so boring and played out id rather watch paint dry. It was fun in Buu Saga, hell it was even fun in GT, but DBS constantly forcing this dynamic and Vegeta as the second Main Character needs to fucking STOOOP. Toei and Toriyama has no idea how to further Vegeta’s character because theyre stuck in this infinite loop.

Vegeta doesnt want to help Goku, he mentions Bulma and/or Trunks, Vegeta blushes, and then he decides to help. THAT HAPPENED LIKE SIX TIMES IN DBS ALONE. It happened in Buu saga as well, but it organically worked cause it was the first time but Bulma and Trunks were ALREADY DEAD/ABSORBED. The look on his face wasnt blushy or pouting for a gag, dude was legit shocked. I rag on Vegeta but he had some legit great moments in the early arcs and later parts of Buu Saga. Anyway im off track. They repeat that same exact character moment OVER AND OVER. cant tell you how many times we had “my Bulma, my bulla, my Trunks, my cabba” in the Tournament of Power alone, and this movie is no different.

DO SOMETHING ELSE FFS

Then we have Broly. ohhhhhh boooy Broly. if you can even call this version of him Broly. His backstory is kinda the same as original movie 8/Broly LSSJ, but its more tragic becuase according to most fans, if youre background is a sobstory, that equals better character. NO. sure it could, but that trope was so worn out so long ago I hate it. “waaa his life was bad, hes not a bad guy” bruh i dont care thats not Broly. just make an OC if you wanna do that. but nope. gotta use the marketing! (More on that later)

People like to criticize Z Broly as “he hates Goku cause he cried” or “all he says is Kakarot” which both are false. On the first point, Broly is a psychopath. He was stabbed as an infant and left to die along with Paragus cause he was too powerful. Then that same day Planet Vegeta explodes practically on top of them. The rest of his life hes basically either being controlled or on a rampage. So that one moment of peace is “ruined” by Goku in a sense cause he subconsciously associates that with Goku. On the second point, Broly was already mentally unstable and then nearly dying, getting caught in the explosion of a SECOND PLANET and then being frozen for seven years will fuck anyone up in the head. Z Broly in the original movie was sadistic af and he had a lot of memorable moments and lines that werent just screaming Kakarot, that Second Coming made him infamous for.

New Broly is legit a man-baby. People talk about old Broly having no personality and this new version having a deep character, but I dont see it. He acts like a child when hes with Cheelai and Lemo and then once the fighting starts he doesnt say a single word but yell. SOUND FAMILIAR?? But he gets a pass because the canon police says so right??? fuck off. New Broly is boring. Im tired of trying to make the Saiyans into ThEyRe noT aLl BaD sEe The SaIyAns ArE AcTuAlLy GoOd!!!11111 ugh i hate it. keep Broly a psycho and keep Bardock a prick. even that guy that went with Buzz Lightyear I mean Paragus was a sweet guy who couldnt fight because of course he was. At least they kept Paragus being a prick when he killed him. Tho his death was lame.

Cheelai’s overrated af. Shes just green bulma lmao. and the fact that they included the “big soft-spoken man gets mad and saves girl from drunk lowkey-rapey pervert” trope just had me roll my eyes like dude stop. Lemo was fine? Nothing against him but didnt do much for me either.

FUCK. FREEZA. i went over this one before too so ill be quick with this as well. I hate hate hate the fact that they brought him back not once but twice in DBS, but even worse that they left him alive to do whatever tf he wants including going back to mass murdering people and expanding his army again. Goku and Vegeta just LET HIM LIVE. Why tf did they go all out and attack Broly, but not Freeza? when one of them was fighting Broly th other easily could have taken out freeza but nope we need a token villain like Joker or Skeletor cause unoriginality. Even at the end, Gogeta does a full power blast to wipe Broly tf out, but when Freeza tries to kill Cheelai and Lemo (two innocent people, feelings on them aside) Gogeta basically just shakes his finger like nuh-uh! dont do that! and then he flies off. Just let this mfer die already im sick of seeing his ass. FUCK I HATE IT SO MUCH GFGFFGFGFGF

Lastly this movie is legitimately Dragon Ball Fanservice The Movie.

Gogeta vs Broly, which the games have been doing since fucking 2003, is the main point of this film. Theres no originality whatsoever. Minus is discount Father of Goku special, and then its a mashup of Broly LSSJ and Fusion Reborn (both of which are superior movies imo). This creatively banrkupt shell of a franchise cant think of anything new, so they legit remake an old movie, through in fusions because that sells like hotcakes, and make the animation pretty because thats all that matters.

Imo, this movie, like 99% of Super, is all flash and flair but no substance at all. At least this movie looked nice. unlike the show.

i know there is and will continue to be a lot of controversy about the hate crime scene, so if you don’t want to read this post because you won’t agree with me criticizing it, then don’t read it, don’t clown on it, just don’t interact and move on with your day, i’m not taking names and hunting people down for their opinions especially when i do not personally know most of you.

obligatory statement: i’m not cis, not het, not white. do not be a bigot on this post :)

i remember very clearly the night that clip dropped + literally spending the next 2 or 3 days scrolling through the tag to read every single post in there to gather all of the opinions that i could find, everything from people who had been following the season from the very first second of the first episode, to people who were only casual viewers, who had not offered commentary before that point and only came out to share their opinions after the enormous shock wave that clip generated throughout the fandom. i don’t even think that sander running out of the hotel in episode 8 caused nearly as much of an uproar, mostly because the majority of us knew that was coming (though i do remember the outrage that we didn’t see robbe find him until it was past midnight, which is also completely understandable).

over those next few days and the following weeks, i saw the full spectrum of opinions continue to expand as more and more people gradually processed what they had seen and began to come to their own conclusions about it, especially those, like mine, with many layers of conflicting emotions. some even shared their own stories that were deeply personal and brave and heart-wrenching and hope-giving. what was pretty universal, however, was that no one saw the hate crime coming. it wasn’t in og, it hasn’t been done in any other remake, there was no hint or warning whatsoever that it was imminent. i know part of that is probably the production thinking that was an appropriate way to show how something like that can unfold in real life. do i agree with how that decision was made? ultimately, no. i’m sure that plenty of you also share that opinion to some extent. i’m sure that many of you also excuse, turn a blind eye to, or even defend the hate crime’s necessity and importance. i’ve said before that it’s not a black-and-white situation and i continue to stand by that. i also stand by the opinion that the writers handled the execution poorly even if they had good intentions. intention ≠ impact. there should have been a trigger warning. there should have been a better and more assertive resolution in the following episodes, like there was for zoë’s season (which was very well done and makes me confused why they didn’t give robbe the same treatment but i digress)

“but iT’S REALISTIC—” yes, it’s realistic that gay people experience violence for being gay. no one is denying that this stuff happens. but the aftermath of the incident, which robbe discussed only briefly twice with milan (and senne, but robbe never told him the full truth of what happened) and then was not addressed further, even when it was at some points clearly mirroring zoë’s struggle with testifying against viktor? that was not realistic. i recognize the very real possibility that they are going to drag the assault into s4 to show how robbe’s storyline impacts however they’ve written yasmina’s arc, but whatever they have planned for her honestly terrifies me to no end because we have never had an adequate sana season that does the muslim main justice. i am including og in this, for those of you who have not seen it. i’m sure that many of you who have seen skamfr s4 and druck s4 agree with me. it goes without saying that i believe they should have addressed the assault before robbe’s season actually ended in order to minimize the amount of interference that he would cause in yasmina’s season. don’t mistake this as me hating on robbe; he is one of my favorite isaks hands down. i can simultaneously love his character and hate what the writers did with him.

“but wiLLEM SAID—” first of all, if you yourself are straight and you are pulling willem’s words from the article to defend your opinion, i want you to step back from the situation and examine the details a little further. willem herbots, for all the speculation that has gone on, has now stated outright with no ambiguity that he is straight. i do not deny his talent as an actor; anyone who follows and reads my tags knows that i have many times before praised his skill in portraying robbe as intimately as he did in s3. but the hard pill to swallow for a lot of you is that by being straight, he lacks the inherent nuance that only personal experiences and struggles with sexual identity can bring to a character whose arc literally revolves around internalized homophobia and coming out. no amount of research can help him understand robbe’s character the way a gay actor would. and to be clear, this is not a moral condemnation against him; i’m not blaming willem for being straight, which is a wild thing to have to state lmao but you never know with tumblr. i do harbor the same sort of apprehension that i harbor towards any straight actor who plays gay roles regardless of their reasoning behind it (most of it falls somewhere along the lines of “i wanted to challenge myself” which honestly is such bullshit to me). but, to my knowledge, we have never had a single male isak who was played by an actor who is lgbt+ irl (i’m not counting skamesp because lucas doesn’t fit the original mold since he’s both isak and eskild, sorry if you have a problem with that), so i’m not exactly surprised that wtfock hasn’t broken that mold. saying all that, i do think he is incredibly sensitive and compassionate for his age and amount of experience, and it is rare to see someone answer questions with the kind of sincerity that comes through even in what appears to me is a fluff piece that is meant to please readers rather than present the most objective truths.

i will link a post here that pretty succinctly sums up my view on what willem stated about the hate crime and about how this interview happened in the first place, but something that i did notice that no one afaik has talked about: notice how willem uses I-statements to answer literally every single question in the interview up until he’s asked about the assault, where he slips almost too obviously into the royal “we” that is often characteristic of pre-fabricated answers: “The only moment we really showed... but we really wanted to show the harsh reality of being out... it’s not something we wanted to ignore in WtFOCK.” in the same paragraph, he uses “we” 3 times, where at no point before he had done so. of course, it’s possible that he did say it at other points and those sentences simply didn’t make the final cut for the article, but i still think it’s pretty telling that all of his other answers are so grounded in his personal, individual thoughts and experiences, but that specific response is so stilted and formal it’s almost awkward. it’s very likely that he was regurgitating an answer that was fed to him from higher up, precisely because the production knew from fan responses that it would come up in any self-respecting interviewer’s questions. these are very basic PR procedures within the industry; willem, at the end of the day, is a paid actor on a show that is still in production and is bound very tightly by his contract. do not expect at any point that what he states about wtfock is fully his own opinion, as whatever he says will reflect on the show’s reputation. this is also, more importantly, why you cannot automatically associate the words and actions of a production with the words and actions of its actors; i seriously doubt that willem h or any of the other cast members personally agree with everything the show has done, but i can tell you with absolute certainty that they are contract-bound to not share their full opinions while the show is still in production. he nor any of the other actors wouldn’t be allowed to criticize writing decisions even if they wanted to. finally, please note that i am in no way trying to lessen the impact of willem answering this question in this way, fabricated or not; i am only trying to present all the facts as objectively as i can because i’ve seen 50 posts today worshipping him for giving answers that likely did not come from his own actual brain. i am asking for a little of the same objectivity in return from you all.

finishing on a personal-ish sidenote: but i have never been more aware than in this moment how completely at odds the druck and wtfock fandoms are, like i knew during the run of robbe’s season, from some replies i was getting on posts and anons in my inbox, that it seems impossible to some people that people can like (and criticize) both shows. but now in the wake of this article, it really goes to show that both sides are ready at a moment’s notice to fight each other over matters that do not need to be fought about. we can all just talk through things and try to see each other’s perspectives and, sometimes, yes, agree to disagree. for a show that preaches “everything is love” left and right, certain people really do not seem to take that message to heart. just to be clear, im not saying that you should lie down and take people’s bullshit, but i am saying that we should hear each other out more instead of jumping to conclusions based on thirdhand information.

in conclusion: no show/film/book/other form of media is perfect and we should be allowed to bring attention to their problematic aspects without being accused of blindly hating on the aforementioned medium overall.

365: One Year Against Destiny (MBC) - I am excited to see Lee Joon Hyuk get a lead role and Nom Ji Hyun needs to work more. Plus, time travel!!!!

Alice (SBS) - Joo Won is back in what looks like a complicated tale of love and time travel and noona romance. YESSS!

The Allies - Time for a Green Hero (KBS) - weird title, but a sageuk about the hero growing into a leader against the Japanese invasion sounds up my alley before his, I am sure, inevitable demise.

Can This Person Be Translated (tvN) - Hong Sisters dramas don’t always work for me, but they always get an automatic look-see.

Eighteen Again (jTBC) - I love Kim Ha Neul and I hope it’s a steamy romance for all those “she is tooooo old for her leading man (Lee Do Hyun)” naysayers.

Half of a Half (tvN) - Park Hae Jin and Chae Soo Bin as an OTP yesss.

Here - Noh Hee Kyung is beyond amazing as a writer and the cast (Lee Byung Han, Han Ji Min, Shin Min Ah, Nam Joo Hyuk) is insane!

Hyena (SBS) - Joo Ji Hoon!!!!! And the teaser looked slick.

Idol Doctor - an idol who sleepwalks and his doctor is a premise that would have made 14 year old me scream in glee.

Itaewon Class (jTBC) - I have developed quite a thing for Park Seo Joon recently, I love revenge, and there is gonna be food! Bring it on!

I Will Find You On a Beautiful Day (jTBC) - Park Min Young, Seo Kang Joon, Lee Jae Wook? I need to look no further. But it also sounds like a healing slice of life romance, yum.

The King: the Eternal Monarch (SBS) - Lee Min Ho in a heroic fantasy tale penned by Kim Eun Suk, and also with Kim Go Eun and Woo Do Hwan in the cast? It’s my dream come true.

Memoir of the Man (MBC) - I like the leads a lot (Kim Dong Wook and Moon Ga Young) and I have discovered that romances with odd premises (he remembers everything, she forgets most important moments) tend to work really well for me.

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life (tvN) - second chance romances with older protags are my fave thing, and when it stars Lee Bo Young and Yoo Ji Tae - my heart!!!

Oddball (MBN) - description is hella confusing but I always check out all the sageuks.

Psycho But It’s OK (tvN) - “ A man who denies love and a woman who doesn’t know love defy fate and fall in love, finding their souls and identities in the process. “ Yes please. Also, Kim Soo Hyun doesn’t do anything for me (I know I know) but he always picks good dramas.

Sandbox (tvN) - Suzy and Nam Joo Hyuk in what sounds like a sweet romance. I happen to like both - they have a warm on-screen vibe and good chemistry with their costars. Also (and that is not a slam), a sweet-natured romance sounds like something that plays to their strengths and avoids their limitations (thoughts of either in an intense melo or sageuk would give me hives, but there they will be perfect.)

Ssanggab Cart Bar (jTBC) - a food stall for the dead? Color me intrigued enough to want to check it out; plus Hwang Jung Eum usually has a very good taste for picking dramas.

The Story of Gumiho (tvN) - Lee Dong Wook as a male gumiho! Jo Bo Ah as his eventual lady love! Fantasy and romance and a very happy Mousie!

Superstar Miss Lee - heroine and another lady swap souls, there is a chaebol possibly played by Yoo Seung Ho, etc etc. Sometimes I am just in the mood for a good, old-school crazy drama.

Train (OCN) - yes, an OCN drama made it on the list, is it a parallel world? Nope, but a parallel world where OCN makes romances may be involved since it stars Kim Jae Wook (OMG yes) as a detective trying to protect his dead love in a parallel world where she is alive. Will miracles never cease?

Welcome (KBS) - and the award for the most insane premise goes to!!! L is a cat (!!!!) who, and I quote, “mastered the art of transformation into human form.” He hooks up with his owner (!!!!!????!!!!) There is so much insanity in this, that I am already riveted, though not necessarily in a good way.

Youth Report (tvN) - I know little about that one but Park Bo Gum has consistently picked dramas I like.

MAYBE

City of Stars: no idea if this one is happening but Ji Chang Wook playing an astronaut sounds interesting. Though he doesn’t always pick the best dramas (hello there, the awful Melt Me), he’s always fun to watch!

Danjong, the Young King (MBC) - any sageuk is at least a try but I literally found zip about this one.

The Game: Towards Zero (MBC) - honestly, the yes/no will depend on whether there is a romance. Someone who can see a dead person’s last moments pairing up with a lady detective to solve serial murders is very far out of my jam (and someone give Im Joo Hwan a leading role dammit, the man is wasted playing the inevitable serial killer) but Taecyeon is adorable even if not the best actor and I would brave this genre if he and Lee Yeon Hee (an underrated girlcrush of mine) are allowed to be a couple.

Late Night Snack Man and Woman (SBS) - bizarre title but I am fond of Sung Hoon despite his less than consistent choice of projects and a conman (who hopefully gets redeemed) sounds fun. I also think the hero pretends to be gay (!?!?!) which I haven’t seen as a major plot point since Personal Choice which could either be fun or bad, who knows.

Memorist (tvN) - I like to watch Yoo Seung Ho but I don’t care for mysteries. Still, it’s on tvN so maybe there will be romance.

Money Game (tvN) - banking and money scheming rarely works for me, but sometimes can be a smart thing, plus I have got to check out Go Soo being back on my screen!

Penthouse (SBS) - the insane writer of The Last Emperor and Temptation of Wife. An experienced cast of my favorites with Lee Ji Ah, Shin Sung Rok and Eugene. It will most likely be a trainwreck I will ditch halfway but hope springs eternal.

The Search (OCN) - the star of Nokdu in the DMZ? Yes!!! But OCN does no romance so my enthusiasm is diminished.

Secret - I like Park Hae Jin and Jo Bo Ah well enough, but mainly because I am damn curious if this baby will ever air!

So I Married an Anti-Fan - this a prefilmed drama that seems to find a home nowhere which means its probably not good, but the premise of an idol having to shack up with his anti-fan for publicity is too amusing for me not to at least want to peek if it actually does air.

Touch (Channel A) - I have an oddly hormonal attraction to Joo Sang Wook (I love the really sexy middle manager look, sue me!) but idols and make-up artists and all that are not necessarily my jam. It depends on the execution.

Unique: Chef Moon - I love Eric to bits but when I start reading the description of a chef dedicated to organic cooking, I start to fall asl...zzzzzzzzz.

WHHHHYYYYY

Hi Bye Mama - I adore Kim Tae Hee, but the premise of a dead wife and mother who comes back for 49 days to her grieving family, presumably including sad children and husband who is only now beginning to recover sounds like one only a genuine masochist could love.

My Holo Love (netflix) - a lonely woman hooks up with an AI. Between the fact that Absolute Boyfriend poisoned me for an AI romance forever, the fact that the heroine has face blindness (isn’t that so 2018?), and that the description includes the extraordinarily maudlin “drama is filled with stories of heartbreaking loneliness and tear-stained love,” I will pass.

Que Sera Sera - out of sheer trainwreck curiosity because I adore the original and why remake a drama that’s only a bit over a decade old, and with relative newbies.

What’s Happened in Bali - if it ever gets made that is (please no.) The original is amazing but they are not repeating the Jo In Sung - So Ji Sub - Ha Ji Won casting miracle and there is no need for a remake; plus this drama is something that makes sense in 2005 but less so in 2020 and just generally leave a classic alone, people.
