Hi! Love your blog! My sister and I love love love Encanto (me more so) and it's my favourite ever Disney movie ever!

I have the headcanon set in modern times that after seeing the barbie movie, Luisa buys herself an emotional support barbie so she gives herself the childhood she didn't get. Also in relation to this, after the events of the movie, Pepa and Isabela bond over the trauma of having to suppress their gifts and being seen as perfect to keep up appearances. Isabela finds her old dolls from when she was a kid and seeing how she's not that girl anymore, she goes ham in destroying them and essentially pulls a Sid from Toy Story. Pepa helps in this therapy by using her lightning and its beautiful.

Other hcs include...

Mariano still being a himbo! One Christmas, Alma says they had an important visitor and Mariano deadass asks if it's Santa. It's padre fransico from a neighbouring church. This one is based off my sister at work, who, last Christmas, asked if the special visitor they were getting was Santa as 'christmas' and 'special visitor' usually means him. It was safeguarding people.

Behind the donkey shed is a popular place for couples to have alone time together. Both Pepa and Luisa can attest to this.

Dolores was adamant about wanting a baby sibling for Christmas, to the point where she held the baby who was the baby Jesus in the nativity hostage. Pepa and Félix did not think that negotiating with a three year old would be on their parenting duties and yet there they were.

Antonio is an oops baby. Very much welcomed, but an oops baby nonetheless. Pepa and Félix swore that after Camilo, there was to be no more. Cue Dolores' quinciñera where they had too much to drink and figured they were too old to need protection. The morning sickness five weeks later proved otherwise.

Thank you so, so much! I love me some Encanto, too 🥰 I took a little break for a while, but I'm back on it now 😂

And my goodness, these are some awesome headcanons!! I'll address each of these and number them so I can keep track 💗💗💗

I have honestly never much considered an modern AU for this group, but I have to admit, that's a really intriguing idea! And Pepa and Isabela bonding is pretty awesome, too, even if it's something I've never thought a lot about either (a lot of my thoughts belong to the three sisters 😅) However, I have to admit, the thought of Isabela destroying Barbie's in Sid-like fashion is the stuff that horror movies are made of 😂 However, I could very much picture it 🤣

I absolutely love Mariano being a himbo. He is literally the sweetest and he's got the spirit, but idk 😂

Now all I'm picturing is Luisa walking up after a hard day of gathering donkeys that she shouldn't have to gather in the first place and coming upon Pepa and Félix back there behind the donkey shed 🤣 Poor baby Luisa gonna be scarred for life

My goodness, I could definitely see Dolores wanting a baby sibling 🥺 And holding the nativity Jesus baby hostage is hilarious 😂💖 The question is did she want a boy or a girl or was she good with whichever? I kinda picture her being cool with either, but that might be based on my own experiences as a little kid wanting a sibling.

And my gosh, it's crazy you say this because I was literally telling my dad this the other day. I was forcing him to look at some of the Encanto characters (as you do) and I was looking at those kids thinking, "Dang, somebody done had an oopsie." 🤣

I want to read somewhere that if Isabella and Mariano got married and had children none of them would get gifts because deep down Isabella would not love them and wouldn’t see them as her children

Well, damn!

I think that's an interesting idea for angst... oh, it's so heartbreaking 🥺🥺

In reality, I feel like she wouldn't love them to begin with due to how their existence is the literal personification of her suffering. By the time they're five, though, they'd have their own personalities that make them more than just a product of her arranged marriage to her and I think Isa would come to love them, so they would get their portion of the miracle.

But, let's take a trip to angst-land, for our entertainment, because "I'm a messy bitch who lives for drama"...

If we roll with Isabela's children not getting doors, that means she is THAT detached from her nuclear family, meanwhile her husband, who is also locked into this loveless marriage, away from his side of the family and probably veryyy touch starved, also just happens to be her single neighbour's dream man... 👁👁

Enter the absolute mess with me, if you will:

Isabela's child (or twins/triplets, in the end, there's no way she could bring herself to try for a baby more than once with Mariano) doesn't get a door; okay, 'makes sense', everyone thinks - there's no candle, so no more gifts.

Meanwhile, Dolores and her husband, who she barely knew for a few weeks before they eloped, have a child, who looks nothing like the 'father' and that kid DOES get an amazing gift 👁👁

Just to stir, I'll add this too: from within the walls, Bruno gets curious about the magic failing again - curious enough to return to sneak into his tower for one more vision. He decides to look into Dolores' future first... he sees her and her child, who is all grown up, looking like the spit of Mariano... And Mirabel happens to find this particular vision during her investigation into the loss of the magic, which got pushed much later on in the timeline...

"Who is that, is that-? Oh... OHHH!"

"Time to eat!"

And you know how quick them secrets spread around the dinner table, especially with an older Antonio listening to the rats... yeah, things would get real messy real quick ☕️ 👁👁🍿

Oh- I’d love to take credit yinyang friend but this (unfortunately) was the work of my tumblr nemesis @zlixlriffs in vc new years night.

With what happens to Dolores in Tainted I can see Mariano being worried about her. I mean they were close in the past so it isn't hard to see that he still cares for her as a friend. I can also see Isa being really upset/jealous of this cause she doesn't want to lose him to Dolores. Maybe Isa doubles down on her meanness to her cousin and even starts to bad mouth her. Mariano gets wind of it and is disgusted to see this side of Isa. It kinda opens his eyes to how horrible she really is and the toxicity of their relationship, and starts to reconsider even being together with her. Maybe even realizing that tho he cared and maybe had some love for Isa it wasn't really true (like he loved the image and persona that Isa wore, but not really her). Along with it being what his mother wanted for him. And seeing her true self just opened his eyes. Maybe even making him realized that his heart truly belongs with Dolores.

But he can't just break it off cause of Isa's contol of his mother. So he starts to distance himself from her and become less affectionate. Which makes Isa upset cause people start to notice the change. Maybe even rumors spread about what might have happened between the two putting Isa in a bad light. I could also see her making some type of plant concoction that technically kinda brainwashes Mariano. She doesn't care if it's wrong if it means the rumors stop and everything went back to normal. However, Dolores is still around and that worries her.

I can just imagine Mariano being the one to find Dolores after everything goes down. Shattered beyond measure, missing an ear, struggling to cope. He’d bring her into his arms, cradle her tightly against his chest and whisper all of his apologies with tears running down his face. She’d stare blankly ahead, not registering his presence. Not registering this love because she’s just so traumatized and can’t do anything but focus on her breathing. She has to keep breathing or she’ll die. And Mariano will still be there, holding her, until more help arrived.

I love the implication here that Dolores, who can hear pretty much anything, has heard nothing blackmail worthy on Camilo (because let’s be real most of the shit he does probably doesn’t phase him if someone knew about it). That it can only be Pepa who can successfully do it.

Also, he asks Pepa to sing to him when he has nightmares that’s so 🥺🥺🥺🥺. Also kinda wanna know what he did on Mother’s Day now.

Even more kinda follow-up to my Dolores/Mariano ones, but more just everyone interacting with kids/older sibling stuff/next-generation ish, thanks to a conversation with @princess-of-gondor

Madrigal Grandkids + Interacting With Children Headcanons:

Part 4: Camilo

He was SO excited to be a big brother! Up until Antonio was about a week old...

But then everyone is too busy fawning over the baby to play with him! Even Mirabel would rather play with the baby!

Definitely acts out a LOT just to get any kind of attention for a while, because his normal jokes aren't working. And then one day he's grounded, and has to stay at home. Tía Julieta is the only adult home, and she's busy in the kitchen when Antonio wakes up from his nap. So Camilo has to actually spend time with his hermanito

And he falls in love, not just with his little brother, but with babies in general. His normal chore is usually to go around shifting into different people inorder to help. And he normally gets a little sidetracked playing with the other kids. But suddenly he's found a way to merge the two

By the time he's 12yo it's rare to see him in the village without a baby in his arms or a gaggle of toddlers he's entertaining so their parents can do other things

Playing with kids his own age is fun, but playing with toddlers is both just as fun and gives him warm fuzzy feelings even more than helping other ways

He is hands down the best babysitter, and all the kids and parents adore him

He's definitely constantly causing trouble, and encouraging the younger kids to do so as well, but if he's babysitting all the chaos is mostly harmless mischief and is usually confined to his immediate vicinity

110% will shift into himself at a younger age to even the playing field in competitive games or to cheat depending on the game and who he's playing with.

Will also shift into his 5yo self when Antonio's puppy eyes alone aren't enough to get extra dessert or a trip to the park or some such. Everyone tries to insist that even the two boys teaming up won't work, but everyone is really just putty in their hands, especially their mamí and hermana.

It's a little harder for those few months without his gift. Cause he can no longer just shift into a parent to calm a crying baby, or into the characters in the story he's telling the children. But he has still learned alot of tricks for taking care of babies, and vocal impersonation was never part of his gift so he still does the best voices

This guy is seriously a baby whisper

Obviously this transfers directly to also being the best uncle

He is 100% the kind of guy who realizes how many girls find guys more attractive when they're interacting with small children, and 100% utilizes his oldest nephew and neices as tiny wingmen

What better form of multitasking than babysitting for his sister and/or cousin, getting to play with their adorable little monkeys, and possibly getting a girlfriend as well?!

The rest of the Madrigals tease him by asking the kids how hunting for a new tía went today, even before they can talk

As both his best wingman and his theatre protégé he coaches Dolores' oldest daughter's first sentence to be "🥺I can't find my tío!😢" to the girl he likes, as he stands 5ft away disguised as someone else and giving her thumbs-up before swooping in to 'find' her and thank his crush for helping her

It works. No one is quite sure how. Especially since the first time he brings her to family dinner the kids reveal said scheme

Totally the uncle who very dramatically showers his neices in affection to make them laugh, and his wedding is a prime example of such. He gets teased that he complemented the flower girls just as much, if not more than the bride

At some point he and Bruno start a children's theatre program. Not just the two of them putting on shows - though they do that all the time - but also acting classes and regular performances by the children

He doesn't have a favorite neice! At least not any more than Bruno does! But Josefa is his star pupil! (Between Pedro II trailing after Isabela and Camilo stealing her, Dolores and Mariano joke that they didn't get to experience parenthood 100% until their 3rd child)

Being dad doesn't diminish his thirst for minor chaos any more than being an uncle did. If anything it encourages it

His oldest and middle boys are right close on either side of Mirabel's twins, and he enables them in so much mischief. Camilo and Mirabel were trouble as kids, but now there's essentially two of each of them, and he just encourages them much to the exasperation of almost everyone else

He's the dad and uncle who is 100% 'one of the kids' except when he actually needs to be the adult in a situation, and then he's the absolute most reliable

He starts the roughousing but also is the one to end it when it right before it gets out of control

Except for with Mirabel's youngest, if one of the toddlers is being fussy and won't calm down for their parents he's the best for the job even without shifting

Any tickle fight or prank war amongst the Madrigal family is automatically assumed to be his fault whether directly or not. They're usually right. He still maintains that Josefa starts all of the worst ones and that he should not be held accountable for either being a bad influence or his 'very necessary' retaliation

(And if you've seen the original posts of my earlier Encanto headcanons, yes I switched what I'm calling Dolores and Mariano's oldest daughter)

Things I noticed while watching Encanto for like the 10th time

(Bc I have taken one (1) film studies class and I believe that I am a master movie analyst)

Antonio’s lil run when he gets into his room

Antonio’s theme song also playing when he opens his door

Tia Pepa and Tio Félix’s embrace as Antonio is receiving his gift

All of Antonio’s animal friends always hanging around Agustín

The absolute mountain of food that Camilo had on his plate

Mirabel constantly shifting/fixing her glasses (as a glasses-wearer this tickled my brain in the right way ong)

Luisa’s pretty makeup 🥺🥺

The entire family’s facial expressions at any given moment

The movement with hair and clothing (so satisfying omg)

I think this one was obvious,, but the donkey/mule motif with Luisa (i.e. she’s worked like a mule every day bc of her gift)

Mirabel’s vision refocusing when she puts her glasses back on in Surface Pressure

The Colombian flag colors everywhere: (confetti in Surface Pressure, umbrellas in WBTAB, Isabela’s dress in What Else Can I Do)

“That place is off limits for a reason” - Luisa,, yeah bc anyone that goes up there can fall to an untimely death ☠️

“Bruno your room is the wooRRssTt” when I watched Encanto this first time I was like ,, “girl what if he heard your trash talking his room??” funnily enough, he probably did

Félix’s caratatatatatpara BOOM (pls tell me y’all know what I’m talking abt)

The sound effects in WDTAB especially during Dolores’ part as she is dancing and moving

The little poof sound whenever Camilo shapeshifts

The fish lady and the pretty lady w really curly hair being literally everywhere

The sound details in WDTAB. Like,, in the scene where everyone is dancing around the table, if you watch while wearing both headphones, the character’s voices move from ear to ear based on where they physically are in the scene

- when Isa is moving around the table, her voice follows

Isabela and Dolores’ lines perfectly lining up and contrasting each other

“He told me that the life of my DREAMS would be promised and someday be mine”

“He told me that the man of my DREAMS would be just out of reach betrothed to another”

Isabela and Camilo absolutely bussin it DOWN during WDTAB

Yuhhhh get into it !! 🗣🗣

Julieta’s constant ‘wtf is wrong with all of you’ face

I know this is an animated movie,, but the camera angles holy shit, like there are so many good examples

The husbands looking after the rest of their families <3

The weather decor in Tia Pepa’s room

Tio Bruno’s picking habit, and the arm of his chair being torn open

The animals warming Tio Bruno’s seat

Antonio giving Bruno his plushy 🥺 and being all suave abt it,, he either got that from Félix or Camilo

The picture frames that had been taken down from the walls in front of Bruno’s door

The capybara being completely dissatisfied

“How do you help a family miracle ? You hug a sister.” A lil Frozen reference. Something tells me Tio Bruno is a Frozen fan !

“Luisa can’t lift an empanada, Mariano’s nose looks like a smashed papaya” I freaking love the way she says those lines, so much sass, so much flavor, go girl, give us everything !

“Making waves, changing minds”

“You’ve changed mine” for some reason these lines always make me tear up

The attention to detail in everyone’s eyes at any given time, like you can literally see the light reflecting off of them

Luisa shielding Abuela as they are thrown out of the house although she is weaker

Again the attention to detail w the string Mirabel plucks off her dress earlier in the movie and a string (probably not the same one tho) being used to find her

Abuela’s first lines in La Familia Madrigal follow the same chords as Dos Oruguitas (a Lin-Manuel signature, but still cool)

Camilo having no idea what’s going on, ever

The xylophone rift as the coffee kid is using his hammers

Antonio leading Mirabel to the front door 🥺🥺🥺

The parallelism between Mirabel and young Alma as they greet casita

So you know how all of the names in Encanto have meaning ? Well I was like what meaning does Mirabel’s name have ? Someone on tiktok mentioned this, but the way that they pronounce Mirabel’s name in the film sounds quite literally like ‘miracle’ ! Also, the nickname that Julieta gives to Mirabel, i.e. Mira, which means to look or see, right ? ( I am not a native speaker, but I do have a basic education of the language please feel free to correct me !!) We all know that one of the biggest problems of the family is that they can’t see beyond their gifts,, they think that it’s the only redeeming thing about them. Even Mirabel is like “open your eyes” see who you truly are !! And when they do that,, they fix the miracle !! And I think that’s just beautiful

TL:DR The attention paid to both detail and subtleties is just out of the world. Disney really outdid themselves w this one !!

(A/N: I honestly dropped off of things I noticed during the tail end of the film bc every time I watch it, I cannot stop crying,, but if anyone want me to elaborate on any of these I can ! Also,, this isn’t everything I found,, if y’all want a little more, lmk ! )

Mariano is so tall and buff but I think Dolores dominates him

That's how I wrote it in my super long Doloriano fic. She was the one to make the first move in the movie!

They're both young but she's less doe-eyed than he is due to her gift (think perpetually online S/O + barely uses the internet S/O).

I think they'd be fluid with that though, since I feel that, despite her knowing what she wants better (and Mariano being very willing to please), Dolores is the kind of girl that wants to be treated like a dainty princess half the time.

I also see her not having the patience for that part of herself at times since she's been agonising over and waiting for her dream man for so long 🥺

So Felix doesn’t really actively dislike Mariano, but he’s not a fan how he moved on super quickly from his niece to his daughter and proposed super quick. He thinks he’s def sort of just in it for the magic but his daughter loves him so… not much he can do.

Then when this happens Mariano is IMMEDIATELY at casita, hugging Dolores and whispering it’s gonna be okay. And since I HC that she was taught by her parents since she was little to focus on Pepa or Felix’s heartbeat whenever she gets overwhelmed, only now Pepa’s too far away for her to hear anything and Felix’s heart best is this frantic terrified pumping mess, Mariano just strokes her hair and holds her super tight and tells her to focus on his heart, not even knowing that’s what Pepa and Felix do for her when she’s in crisis mode.

He also does all the cooking (bc of course a himbo poet would know how to cook) and the moment Felix and Agustín find out where they’re hidden he’s like ‘I’m going with you.’ Not even had to be asked or whatever just ‘let’s go, I’m ready’ (and the only reason he doesn’t go with them is bc Felix wont allow it. If something happens to him and Pepa then at least he’d die knowing his daughter still has the man she loves).

Then when the grandkids go this time he DOES go, bc he’s a pretty strong guy and can help in a fight even without magic, and he helps protect Camilo and Dolores who are the defense to Isabela and Luisa’s offense, and even is the one who Carrie’s A passed out Pepa back home (Luisa is way too like overly emotional and sobbing to manage to carry the three of them) But anyway at the end of all this Mariano is 100% off Felix’s shit list and he now considers him a son

This man just has so much love inside and he’s gonna fucking prove it.

“Bc of course a himbo poet would know how to cook” I’m screaming he would he WOULD.

the heartbeat thing is so 🥺

and the fact that he’s wants to go with them and protect them too, get this man a fucking wedding ceremony STAT
