To me, Machete kind of has the energy of a secondary villain/coldhearted side character in someone else's story that a lot of fans latch onto, moreso than the protagonist. Question is, would he be the villain in anyone's story?
Why, thank you! I'm actually glad to hear he gives off that vibe. I don't think he set out to become a villain but a lot of people certainly view him as one.
#in the 16th century canon he starts out as an introverted but sincerely well meaning guy that never quite manages to find his social niche#he was a sensitive kid and when subjected to enough pressure#his insecurity fearfulness and powerlessness mutate into distrust resentment aggression suffocating repression and self-restraint#I don't think he's a bad person in fact he consistently tries very hard to do the right thing#do his job properly avoid letting people down and get through life with a sense of dignity#but he is supposed to come across kind of cold impersonable and difficult to be around if you don't know him personally (and very few do)#people can sense there's something wrong with him and are put off by it#Vatican is a nest of vipers and as the stakes rise he retreats deeper into his coldblooded untouchable work persona#he has no choice but to start lying scheming blackmailing and eliminating his enemies#in order to maintain his position keep Vasco safe their relationship under wraps and his own head above water#essentially playing by the same rules everyone else in the holy see has been playing with for centuries#eventually he loses his spot as the secretary of state and is manipulated/forced to take on a role in the roman inquisition#and if people were sort of iffy about him before being the authority overseeing trials torture excommunications and executions doesn't help#and since he has so few allies and such an infamous reputation he's an easy target for scapegoating whenever necessary#towards the end it dawns on him that he's become the kind of twisted cruel corrupt person he used to fear and despise#and the guilt moral injury and abject self-loathing had largely sapped him of his will to live by the time the final assassin gets him#answered#anonymous#Machete#Vaschete lore#he thought his dream of priesthood would make him a better person more worthy of admiration safety and love but he climbed too high#and got roped up in the dangerous games that take place under god's nose and slowly got strangled to death

theyre obviously drawing parallels of the wittebane brothers with hunter and luz, but hopefully with less fratricide. so what if it actually gets acknowledged in canon?
when they run into him, belos sees the echo of his brother with a younger human peer. they’re taking care of each other and gallivanting around in masks, having adventures like phillip and caleb used to. before they got to the demon realm and everything fell apart. before caleb fell in with the witches and phillip took the CLEARLY righteous path and rejected that world.
except luz and hunter have already been in the demon realm. luz has taken the magic and the culture of the isles and flourished. despite all of belos’s efforts, hunter has also studied wild magic and even ultimately betrayed him like caleb did. and now instead of convincing hunter to return to puritan sensibilities in the human world like belos wanted to do for caleb long ago, luz has converted them both to heretics. and their relationship is better for it.
but belos will never admit that the problem was himself. that if he had embraced the boiling isles, or even just tolerated his brother’s embrace of it, then he wouldn’t have “had” to kill caleb. so instead he looks on with envy at luz and hunter, who could have been phillip and caleb in another life but achieved this while doing everything wrong, and rages.

Marguerite de Navarre’s discussion of courtly love, La Coche (The Coach) (1541–42), was dedicated to [Anne de Pisseleu]. The relations between Marguerite and Anne were complex. Sometimes described as rivals, they often shared tactical objectives in court politics and, though Marguerite was waspish about many others in her talks with foreign envoys, she never was about Anne. There was clearly also some sympathy between them in matters of religion, which in Anne’s case developed later into Protestantism. Marguerite’s poem is a discussion about the miseries and pains of love, which are submitted by Marguerite to the arbitration of Madame d’Étampes in the absence of her brother the king. The text also contains an extended eulogy of Anne (though not named directly) in which she is likened to ‘a sun midst stars who spares nothing for her friends, nor stoops to vengeance on her foes’. Marguerite addresses her as cousin and mistress. There are several illuminated copies, the best known in the Musée Condé showing Marguerite presenting the work to Anne."
-David Potter, "The Life and After-Life of a Royal Mistress: Anne de Pisseleu, Duchess of Étampes"

big clue that time in aeneid Carthage is fucked the hell up is that Pygmalion brother of Dido is king/tyrant of Tyre and supposedly powerful and he appears NOWHERE in the reports of Troy’s allies. Like he is RIGHT THERE and allies support Troy from much further away than that iirc but this dude just. does NOT exist until Dido appears and needs a backstory

#nothing is more depressing than working on my cv#because I just don't feel like I have marketable skills#and so many of the writing and research posts I come across on job sites are like ''you'll be working alongside ai''#I even saw a copywriter post that said ''you won't be doing any writing or editing. you job will be to refine and improve ai prompts#so that the ai can more consistently produce the texts we need''#like hello#the person doing that job is literally making themself more obsolete by the day#so here's the plan#I need to take any job that pays vaguely well#and use that money to either do short corses#or save up to go so my masters#that conclusion is inescapable#just. for now I'm still stuck on step 1 : finding a decent job#and (perhaps I'm being too picky) but post covid I do not want to go back into anything in the tourism industry#it's too precarious and honestly just comes down to entertaining rich people which pushes me further left every time i think about it#I considered joining the communist party. but 1) they're still part of the tripartite alliance with the anc... which is a no from me#and 2) communist révolution should spontaneously happen in industrialised countries with surplus wealth when the proletariat arise#south africa does not have surplus wealth nor class consciousness really. it's still filtered through post apartheid racial groupings#which is unhelpful because the black bourgeoisie are not our allies just because they're black#and trying to impose communism in a society without the surplus wealth didn't work out too well throughout the 20th century#so what does that leave you with#parties like cope ? plagued by the same issues as the anc ? no thank you#(I did also study politics btw which is why I've even considered these career paths)#(although I haven't worked in politics or governance since graduation so maybe that doesn't even matter anymore it's been years)#all I want is a job that pays fairly and leaves me with enough free time to do my hobbies#I do not have the grindset I'll admit that#which is why I've enjoyed the art industry#but again. it just comes down to entertaining rich people in the small galleries which is needlessly stressful#and the larger non-commercial galleries and musea aren't hiring atm...#and that's it. rant over I guess since this is the 30th tag

Jesuuusss I picked up a shift to work with Andrew last night bc I have to work with him and Alex tonight and I thought I’d feel less uncomfortable if I had seen Andrew once before that shift Well Alex picked up a shift last minute I’m sure just to torture us specifically me. He was acting like such an ass all night I’m sure to just get under my skin and Yes I did almost have a panic attack because not only was he completely shameless but people who i work with and will have to continue to work with were playing into it because they’re just so mad at me for not fucking Alex I guess. Both Andrew and his friend seemed incredibly disturbed by this as well thankfully anndddd no one told me anything specifically but I think he got into trouble for harassment thanks to Andrew and his friend saying something…. One hell of a test to put potential boyfriend thro oh my god

the Efsun plot is so dumb like it makes no sense why Hurrem would ask her to kill Mustafa when she could sabotage and continue spying on him through her

Not gonna lie, the main reason I'm watching the series is for the adults. The girls are fine, I would have loved to see them have more normal time in school and really develop. But with the actual story they seem more of a excuse to go to the place where the plot is.
I started watching for the Atlas arc because the premise was so fucking good. The leader of a secret society based on the Wizard of Oz has died and now the remaining members are meeting up in a flying futuristic city. Said members are the story adaptations of the Scarecrow and the Tinman (aka the queers), the ones who fight a lot because their worldview is so different and yet they are still trusted allies, even close friends.
One is the best huntsmen in the world, but is always seen as a maverick. Yet has to take care of his nieces and their friends while dealing with his alcoholism, self hatred, the end of the world and cope quickly with the idea of with being lied to by a very close friend and discovering it after his death.
The other is a general who's spiraling because the world is slipping from his hands like sand. He has, or he feels like he has to control everything to save everyone while wanting desperately to somebody to talk to him. But the friend that used to keep him at bay is gone, and everyone under him trust him so much, with whom could he talk? He can't fail or everyone's dead. He has to keep himself away from feeling or his resolution is gonna crumble, but he care so much it hurts.
And then they meet in Atlas, they see the cracks in the other because their leader has fallen. They're both enough desperate to have an equal that they allow themselves a tiny moment of emotion and hugged after so long...
And then they didn't had a personal conversation in two volumes and I want to eat sawdust.

The way ‘Hürrem’s kids would have been fine and safe if Mustafa took power’ is one of the biggest misconceptions in the Magnificent Century fandom.

"The court also provided the forum for forging alliances to further interests in the localities: the court was the obvious meeting point for the 'feminine gang of three'—Alice Chaucer, Elizabeth Talbot, and Elizabeth Woodville— to whom Colin Richmond has attributed a successful campaign to wrest two manors of the Fastolf inheritance from the Pastons and into the hands of Alice Chaucer's son, the king's brother-in-law, John de la Pole. Again this was a queenly role that usually left no evidence but its political importance must not be overlooked."
