To Beijing for gold. In which sports will Russia win medals at the Olympics?
Tumblr media
* Following a ban by the World Anti-Doping Agency for doping violations, Russian athletes are banned from competing in the Olympic Games under their flag and anthem until December 16, 2022. Thus, just as at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, in Beijing the Russian team will perform under the flag of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC). And instead of the Russian anthem, gold medals will be awarded to Russian athletes to the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 by Tchaikovsky.
In what sports and disciplines will Russian athletes compete for medals?
Figure skating
The main suppliers of gold at the Winter Games are Russian figure skaters. With the best of luck, Russia can count on 9 medals – 4 gold, 3 silver, 2 bronze. Gold can be taken in women's singles skating (here can be the whole set), pairs skating and ice dancing, where there are two strong pairs from Russia, and in the team tournament. Kamila Valieva and Anna Shcherbakova are current European and world champions. Alexander Galliamov and Anastasia Mishina are current European and World champions. Viktoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov are the current European and World champions.
Tumblr media
*Viktoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov In Men's Singles Mark Kondratyuk could be in contention for a medal. Russia’s main rivals in ice dancing will be Frenchmen Gabriela Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron.
Cross-Country Skiing
Russian athletes can win 1 gold, 1 or 2 silver and 1 or 2 bronze medals.
Tumblr media
*Alexander Bolshunov
Alexander Bolshunov is the main star for the Russians – he took three silvers and a bronze at the PyeongChang Games. Bolshunov was the first Russian to win the World Cup (twice), won the most difficult Tour de Ski, collected eight World Cup medals, including gold in the skiathlon a year ago. It's about time he put himself in contention for an Olympic gold medal.
He will be joined by two-time world champion Sergey Ustyugov. He missed out on last season because of a coronavirus, but this year the Russian has had an impressive World Cup start with three individual podiums and a good battle with Johannes Klebo in the relay.
If Alexander Terentyev heals from his micro-injury, he has a good chance to win medals up to gold in the team sprint.
Tumblr media
*Natalia Nepryaeva
Natalia Nepryaeva, who has a bronze medal at the 2018 Olympics, silver (2021) and bronze medals at the World Championships (2019), as well as the first victory in the Tour De Ski for Russian women, will fight for medals. Together with Yulia Stupak, she can compete for a medal in the team sprint as well.
Biathlon
The team counts on 2 medals in biathlon, one of which is a gold medal. The main hope for the Russians is Alexander Loginov, Eduard Latypov and Kristina Reztsova.
Tumblr media
*Alexander Loginov
Snowboard/Freestyle
There are going to be a great number of sets of medals in these events – 11 and 13, respectively. Russia expects 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. We hope for Dmitry Loginov in snowboarding, who has three World Cup golds under his belt in recent years and is in the top-3 of the World Cup overall standings this season. Vic Wylde, a two-time champion at the 2014 Olympics, retreated into the shadows after his triumph in Sochi, but in the last year he began to return to his former heights.
Tumblr media
*Dmitry Loginov
The mixed cross-country skiing tournament, making its debut at the 2022 Olympics, could also bring medals. Lubov Nikitina, Pavel Krotov and Maksim Burov were first at the 2021 World Championships.
And at other competitions free stylists perform steadily, finding themselves on the podium.
Russia also has a 2021 World Champion in Big-Air - Anastasia Tatalina.
Tumblr media
Hockey
The Russian men's hockey team is flying to Beijing to defend its Olympic title and, given that there will again be no players from the NHL, has every chance of success.
Tumblr media
Curling
The Russians in Beijing have two teams - the men's team of Sergey Glukhov and the women's team of Alina Kovaleva. And for the first time in a long time both our teams have a real chance for medals.

Olympic Biathlon: Former Russian biathlon coach claims doping was widespread in past years
Former Russian biathlon coach Anatoli Khovantsev has admitted that he could "count clean biathletes on one hand" as recent as six years ago but has stressed he believes it is now harder to cheat in the sport. Khovantsev has claimed that a whole generation of biathletes was doping, but said that was no longer a case when he coached the team from 2018 to 2020.
Winter Olympic admirers from all over the world are called to book Winter Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Winter Olympic Tickets. Olympic Biathlon admirers can book Olympic Biathlon Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on reduced prices.

He was replaced by vice-president Valery Polkhovsky as head coach earlier this year after a series of poor performances this year from both the men and women's team, with the latter winning no World Cup events. He confided in sports.ru about systemic doping in the nation saying: "Between 2002 and 2014, you could count clean biathletes on the fingers of one hand.
"Returning to a 'normal' training technique is not easy, but for the last five or six years, we have been improving and it is much better. In biathlon, a whole generation was brought up on doping, returning to a normal technique is not easy."
In February, Evgeny Ustyugov was banned for two years and was stripped of his Sochi 2014 Olympic gold medal due to tests dating back to 2013, but Russian President Vladimir Putin said he hopes that genetic tests can help clear the biathlete's name. In the same month, biathlete Alexander Loginov had his room raided by Italian police following a request from the International Biathlon Union.
Loginov, who served a two-year doping ban for Erythropoietin between 2014 and 2016, had phones and laptops belonging to him and his coach Alexander Kasperovich seized during the World Championships in Antholz-Anterselva in Italy.
Tumblr media
Khovantsev also said it is difficult for those now in power blamed for the past saying: "The Federation and the coaches who are currently working are reaping the fruits of these years when Russia experienced doping problems."
Russia had 10 positive tests by biathletes between 2011 and 2015 that were covered up, according to the McLaren Report. The country had 643 positive samples across all sports.

Austria probes doping, fraud, corruption in biathlon
The longtime president of the International Biathlon Union stepped down Thursday as Austrian prosecutors investigate the organization for possible doping offenses, fraud and corruption.
Police raided the IBU’s headquarters in Salzburg on Tuesday on a tipoff that Russian doping cases had been covered up in return for bribes.
Prosecutors said the alleged wrongdoing covered a period from 2012 until the February 2017 world championships in Austria – much more recent than most Russian doping scandals.
Article continues below …
Prosecutors also said the bribes amount to $300,000. They said they are also treating $35,000 in prize money as fraudulent earnings if it was won by athletes who doped and should have been banned.
The case spans three countries, with searches also conducted in Norway and Germany.
The IBU said Thursday that Anders Besseberg, the only president in the organization’s 25-year history, ”is stepping down from his position as long as the investigation is ongoing.”
Besseberg had been expected to leave his post later this year rather than run for a new term. He is one of the longest-serving officials in any Olympic sport.
The IBU board also suspended general secretary Nicole Resch a day after saying she had taken a leave of absence.
The acting IBU president will be Klaus Leitner, an Austrian who had been in charge of finances. A senior Russian official, Viktor Maygurov, had been next in line for the presidency after Besseberg but didn’t want the job, the IBU said.
Hours after Besseberg stepped down, Russia said a double Olympic gold medalist was under investigation for suspicious blood data.
The head of the Russian Biathlon Union, Alexander Kravtsov, told state news agencies Thursday that the IBU had flagged up an ”abnormal biological passport” for Evgeny Ustyugov, who won two gold medals at the 2010 Olympics.
Kravtsov said the IBU had informed him of the case last year and added that Ustyugov – who retired in 2014 – had natural abnormalities in his blood. It wasn’t clear whether his case was linked to the criminal investigation, or why it emerged so long after he retired.
The World Anti-Doping Agency has said its investigation department provided information which led to the raids, and a lawyer for Russian doping whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov said he was involved. Besseberg sits on the WADA board as a representative of Winter Olympic sports.
Russian doping scandals have torn apart the sport of biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and shooting.
The American, Canadian and Czech teams all boycotted last month’s World Cup finals after the IBU refused to move the event from Russia. Numerous Russian athletes, including Olympic medalists, have been banned for doping in recent years.
At the 2017 world championships – a focus of the Austrian investigation – French athlete Martin Fourcade walked out of a post-race podium ceremony following a dispute with Alexander Loginov, a Russian who had recently returned from a doping ban.
Asked about the Austrian police raids, the International Olympic Committee said Thursday it had ”full confidence in (WADA) and the authorities to deal with this issue.”
The IOC declined to say if Olympic revenues due to the IBU from the 2018 Pyeongchang Games could be withheld. The IOC’s executive board next meets on May 2-3 in Lausanne.
Resch is a German lawyer who has been the IBU’s top administrator since 2008. The IOC said her suspension meant she would also be removed from a panel assessing preparations for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. It is next due to visit China on Sept. 16-18.
Resch was previously assistant to Michael Geistlinger, her Austrian predecessor as IBU general secretary. Geistlinger had a key role in the wider Russian doping saga in January as one of four Court of Arbitration for Sport judges selected to hear appeals by athletes against lifetime Olympic bans for doping linked to the 2014 Sochi Games.
A total of 28 Russians had their IOC-imposed sanctions overturned, and 11 bans were upheld. Three cases involving Russian biathletes were postponed.

Other than that, quite a disappointing stage for me, with both Ustyugov and Bolshunov having a messy race and losing a lot of time overall.
