Second project from Visual Communications class that I forgot to post last year! For this one, we had to choose an album and design a new cover for it.

I went with one near and dear to my heart, a whimsical album that I grew up with, and which greatly fueled my curiosity about the natural world:

The first two images I drew myself for the front and back covers, and the last two are of the covers fully finished, with text added in InDesign. I would have hand-lettered at least the front cover as well, but I ran out of time for that.

London Calling Album -

Mind Mapping

We did mind quick mind maps about what the music of the album made us feel. The music itself is quite upbeat compared to its lyrics, so I think that what came to mind was more so the imagery I got from looking over the lyrics.

We drew out just the images with no words, then presented it to the class to see if they could guess what imagery we were trying to convey. I was happy with my guesses, as everyone seemed to know what I was going for.

More Mind Mapping and Concept Art

We did another mind map, but this time it was more so on words to describe the album itself. We were then going to be coming up with quick concepts based on some of the words we wrote.

I found it quite hard when trying to think of imagery for certain words. So I stuck to simple ones such as street life, rebellious and explosive.

The one on the left I went for street life with rebellious graffiti done on a brick wall. It's a bit plain, but I do like the idea.

The right one I went for explosive. In the original album cover art, he smashes the bass, which I turned into a more cartoony look. The lines coming out from the guitar were inspired by the explosive hazard symbol. I'm really happy with how that one turned out.

Album design ideas

Going through websites with information on the inspiration for the album, I started coming up with a few ideas.

'We knew that London was susceptible to flooding', I went with the old English telephone box full of water to describe this.

'Joe Strummer was a news junkie, and many of the images of doom in the lyrics came from news reports he read' still going with the flooding thing I put it on a newspaper, but I'm not really loving that one.

As for the different writing fonts, the original album text was based on one of Elvis Presley's albums, so I'm thinking of adding text to represent a different one of his albums in my redesign.
