Story
Yue is a young boy, born in a mountain shrine in the town of Utsuwa. One day, he attends the winter festival together with his childhood friend, a black fox named Kurogitsune. The lanterns burn bright red, and the people are buzzing. As Yue sees the outside world for the first time in his life, he meets two mysterious boys. Upon returning to the mountain, the owner of the shrine, Mikoto, told him.
Characters
-Main Character
Yue (voiced by Shinosuke Tachibana) – Likes to take things at his own pace. He enjoys being lazy, but also has a curious side to him. He descends from the mountain for the first time on the day of the winter festival…
-Branch Characters
Kurogitsune (voiced by Kei Shindo) – A black fox that has been together with Yue since he was a child. He is a good friend, and a self-proclaimed big brother to Yue. Strong-willed and straightforward, he is an open book to those around him.
Togo Tsubaki (voiced by Daichu Muzishima) – A second-year student at Utsuwa High School. He lives together with his father and little sister. He has a rather mature personality for his age, and is a caring eldest son. Both he and Yue seem to remember something about each other…
Akiyoshi Tochika (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai) – A second-year student at Utsuwa High School, he is the son of the heir of a large land-owning family. Due to his severe allergies he is always carrying a box of tissues under his arm. He has a straightforward personality, for better or for worse. After having met Yue at the festival, he is trying to uncover his true identity.
Sagano (voiced by Kosuke Toriumi) – A mysterious man who appears at twilight. Even though he’s always smiling, there’s something not quite right about him. He acts as if he knows Yue.
-Sub Characters
Mr. Sato (voiced by Kenyu Horiuchi) – A Shinto priest at Utsuwa Shrine, and Mikoto’s right-hand man. To Yue he is a mentor and a father figure. He enjoys cleaning.
Mikoto (voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro) – She may look like a little girl, but she is actually the master of the mountain that rules over Utsuwa. She dotes on Yue as if he were her younger brother. She has a calm and natural disposition.
-Other Characters
Momiji (voiced by Akiki Yajima) – A doll-like specter that suddenly appears in town. He is always hungry, as eating is his pastime. Although he has a wealth of experience in meals and is a glutton who will eat anything, he eats in accordance with his own aesthetics, and is picky about his tastes. His dream is to make 100 friends.
Tomori (voiced by Junichi Suwabe) – A specter that serves Mikoto. Keeper of the mountain lights, he watches over them all night. In his free time he can be seen having a pleasant conversation with Yue and Kurogitsune. He is kind despite his frightening appearance. Kurogitsune in particular has taken a liking to him.
Saku (voiced by Yui Horie) – A schoolgirl-like specter. She does not get along well with the other specters of the shrine, instead patrolling the town together with Nagi. She has a cheerful and innocent personality, but as she hates to lose, she also has a belligerent side that loves to take on strong opponents. She is a little interested in Yue, as he looks like an opponent that she lost to once in the past.
Nagi (voiced by Saki Nakajima) – A schoolgirl-like specter. She does not get along well with the other specters of the shrine, instead patrolling the town together with Saki. Perhaps due to her calm and collected personality she often acts as the pacifist in contrast to Saki. She is well known for her long braids, which she sometimes braids herself, and sometimes Saki does it for her.
Ranchu (voiced by Kenichi Suzumura) – A specter that serves Mikoto. He is the caretaker for the residents at Utsuwa Shrine. Perhaps due to feeling comfortable around him due to their similar ages, and a bit of envy towards his positive attitude, he often treats Kurogitsune in a cold manner. However, despite his negative words, his actions are quite kind.
Mr. Abe+ (voiced by Akira Ishida) – A specter that serves Mikoto. They work at the talisman counter, where they make charms and fortunes. They’re always trying to get Yue to pull a fortune for some reason or another. Despite a suspicious-looking pair of hands emerging from his jacket, they insist that there’s no one else hiding inside.
Kagetsu (voiced by Takuya Eguchi) – A specter that serves Mikoto. He is a direct subordinate of Sato, and works together with Mashiro. He’s been together with Mashiro since birth, as the two are inseparable. He’s responsible for the “cleaning” of Utsuwa City, both literally and in another sense of the word. He has a rather blunt and condescending attitude.
Mashiro (voiced by Yuki Ono) – A specter that serves Mikoto. He is a direct subordinate of Sato, and works together with Kagetsu. He’s been together with Kagetsu since birth, as the two are inseparable. He’s responsible for the “cleaning” of Utsuwa City, both literally and in another sense of the word. He appears to be friendly and cheerful at first, but has an unexpected dry side to him.
Hina Tsubaki (voiced by Yukana) – Togo’s younger sister. She really loves her brother and is attached to him. She is a bright and innocent kindergartner, but sometimes she speaks and acts in a mature manner beyond her years. According to her brother, there is something called the “Hina Language.”
Goldfish+ (Suisen voiced by Marie Miyake, Gyokuro voiced by Juri Nagatsuma, and Kimun voiced by Natsumi Takamori) – Three goldfish specters that are always together. They get along well with Sato, and can also take human form. The Red Goldfish Suisen is the most energetic. The Black Goldfish Gyokuro is the calmest. The Yellow Goldfish Kimun is the most spoiled.
Sora Suzuki (voiced by Ryota Osaka) – A classmate of Togo and Akiyoshi. He enjoys taking notes in classes. He looks up to the cool Togo, and is obsessed with lending his notebooks to him.
Young Man A (voiced by Tatsuhisa Suzuki) – A boy that Yue meets in town. He seems to be connected to the disappearances happening in the town.
Yaichi Tsubaki (voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa) – Togo’s father. He is an unsuccessful novelist that is working part-time. He is a caring father, but his sons don’t take him seriously. The family gets along well.
Akitoshi Tochika (voiced by Satoshi Tsuruoka) – Akiyoshi’s father. A major landowner who has supported Utsuwa City for a long time. He is the current head of the Tochika family.

i have to know which game is the schrodinger's bl you were trying to download
sure, its akaya akashiya ayakashino
if you're wondering what my assessment is on the BL factor. i'm 3 hours in. the plot is, essentially, kind of BL-ish in setup, but the stated end goal in-universe is friendship (and then eating at least one, lol)... but i feel the devs did not shake off their roots, even the art aside, i can only feel "BL writer(s) wrote this". but it really is a story that isn't romantic, a story's story, i guess i can see what people mean with "there are implications between certain characters but it is not BL whatsoever"
not really reading it for BL anyway so it is no skin off my back. if you're wondering about muh implications
it seems like the youkai or at least the kitsune protagonist in this game cannot tell most humans apart, but he makes note of two guys that DON'T look like animalistic blobs to him and is naturally curious about them. due to circumstances he is tasked with further getting to know them. one in particular he says "he feels like he has known for a long time". the other guy is really ragging on the fact that he can sense he's a kitsune and says shit like "i won't let you have your way, you sneaky kitsune!!" and so on. you see this sort of dynamic, right? btw the first human guy is pretty cold and blunt. i'm not really a BL expert but it super feels like a character type that was popular at the time of first writing (2011)
the protagonist's retainer is pretty overprotective of him, but i think it's natural that he is bc it is his job. i think people might read into it, probably? they live(d) a very low tempo relaxing life before the story also. i may have my biases however due to...
the same retainer fights the cook of the house like cats and dogs. incidentally, the cook seems to be some kind of mouse youkai. it doesn't help the retainer gives less FOX and more CAT. so it is cat vs mouse type arguing. i think they are pretty funny and they argue like a married couple.
and that is it so far. the intrigue has been really good so far. hope this sates your curiousity

I just remembered that I never finished playing the BL visual novel Akaya Akashiya Ayakashino (Of the red, the lights, and the ayakashi). It’s a bit spooky and never received an official English translation aside from the manga. I was able to follow the story fairly well years ago (with a decent amount of dictionary look up), so it should definitely be an easier read now - there’s also voice acting for the dialogue. Maybe I’ll make a parallel text for it.

I’m banning myself from watching any cdramas for now lol. I really need to use my Japanese again. My reading ability has really tanked from not using it for so many months. I need to find something to translate to practice…(it’s my go-to for refreshing my reading skills…I usually manage to get super hyper focused on the task and don’t get distracted immediately like I do if I was just straight up reading some text).
Tsukihoe is probably the only project I have right now, and the only one likely to never get an official translation (believe it or not, Akaya Akashiya, Ayakashino is getting an official release!). But Tsukihoe is hard because 1) it’s a manga and 2) it’s poetry.
I’m interested in a bunch of visual novels, and those are usually good to translate, but acquiring them is always difficult. I don’t have a pc and many run on pc only. The only ones I own are Akaya Akashiya Ayakashino and Taisho Mebiusline which is…a no at my skill level lol. I can read it, but if I translate it, I’m afraid I’d not do it justice…

For my new years resolution, I'd like to first of all do some more reading, especially VNs, I have so much on my to-read.. I'd also like to fully read one in JP, deciding between Akaya Akashiya Ayakashino or Danzai no Maria. If I have enough braincells then playing both would be nice...
Second, I'd like to try and finish one full illustration a month. I did a lot of chibis and commissions last year, and although I'm happy with all of them, I feel like I really stagnated... I want to challenge myself a bit and draw proper illustrations with backgrounds and just be a bit more ambitious with art in general. I know I'm capable of it, I often just find myself scared of committing to a drawing... Pouring lots of time into a single one....
It will be a bit daunting, but I really do want to give myself this challenge. 12 full illustrations seems like a daunting number, but "one a month" is something I'm fully capable of. So!! I'll Ganba!!!! Here's to 2023!

01/02/22
Hello and welcome to my first immersion overview of 2022! ʕ•̀ω•́ʔ✧
If you're new here, hi, I'm Mae, and this is a list of media I listened to and read this month using the immersion or input method for Japanese language learning.
I came into the month thinking I knew exactly which books I wanted to read and dramas I wanted to see. Of course, not all my plans worked out and I had to work around some weird immersion material choices and unexpected but probably overdue gaps in my learning.
Tumblr media
And so we come to this, a month where I almost didn't watch any dramas - I wouldn't have even watched 消えた初恋 literally on the last day of the month if I didn't realize how short it was. It had a standard fluffy plot, so it was simple and easy to listen to in the background while I was dying in grammar hell. ヾ(。>﹏<。)ノ゙✧*。
Ah yes, grammar. The bane of my Japanese language learning journey. There's a reason I picked immersion learning as my method, and it was because I absolutely hated grinding grammar exercises in the classroom. I just wanted the language to wash over me, obviously while obsessively doing look-ups while immersing, and somehow magically be able to turn my passive knowledge from input into active output.
But alas, my anxiety has gotten the best of me, and I started to fear that the language books I did read and grind in Anki, Tae Kim and the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar, had run its course and it was finally time to sit down with another grammar resource to stitch up the loose ends.
So for the past week, I've been taking advice from people who seemed to be better at the subject than I am, and I have started to grind through the 新完全マスター 文法 N1 and N2 books, and yes, even the exercises.
Can't say I'm too happy about it, since it has so far drained my energy to read for fun, but if its going to help me somewhat based on other immersion learners' experiences, then I'm willing to give it a try. On the bright side, at least its written fully in Japanese! Never a break from immersion.
Tumblr media
And so while I was struggling to get back on the reading grind this last week, I started to read a few chapters of 無職転生. Admittedly, still not much of a light novel reader and its not even for a lack of content I'm interested in, just a lack of drive and motivation. It's something I'd like to work harder on this year.
On the other hand, ひいきびいき is as fun to listen to as ever, now that I have a better reading base. I can still tell there are gaps in my comprehension, but at least it does not sound like gibberish to me like it did a year ago. Progress!
Tumblr media
I wish I could tell you guys that I had a good time reading visual novels this month, but honestly it felt like a mess. If seven different visual novels shuffled within a month doesn't clue you in with the kind of concentration struggle I had, then I don't know what to tell you. At least I kept my 1M reading streak. (ノ∀`)
My motivation reading VNs started strong and promising, and I finished PARQUET (the beginner VN at TheMoeWay Discord) within the first few days of the month. I was also made aware of the fact that the Steam version of 剣が君 had a lot of bonus content that I missed out on because of the version I played, and so my friend Alex kindly let me read everything I missed. It was absolutely lovely, 11/10. It has been months and nothing has beat this game yet for me.
Then, with my reading high, I turned my attention to the intermediate VN from TMW, and that's where it all went south. 紙の上の魔法使い' s blurb sounded so promising, but I couldn't read past (or listen past for that matter) some stupid lines from the female characters, and so it now unfortunately sits on my stalled pile of VNs. I feel like I got baited into thinking that the characters in this game were smart because they supposedly liked reading. Who knows, maybe I'll revisit it when I'm in the mood for moe girls, but something tells me that it will take a while or never.
In my frustration with the previous game, and due to some previously hyped conversations with my friend Alex from Discord, I decided to play her favorite VN on a whim without looking at the VNDB tags (which proved to be a mistake on my part - always read the tags to filter out games with triggers). Let me introduce you to Omega Vampire, something completely far from my comfort zone, which proved to be detrimental to my reading as well later on.
Count this as the review I have for this game, apparently omegaverse is a huge thing and this game does it well, but it was not enough of a pull for me because I have no idea what the omegaverse is, and I also don't particularly enjoy vampire/werewolf stories thanks Twilight so there's that. So after a while when this VN kept on showing me disturbing sexual content without consent, I had to quit after two routes. Honestly, if I sat and read for another four days or so I could have finished it, but if I had to rinse my eyeballs everytime I tried to read then I'd rather read something else. So yeah, this goes into the stalled pile as well.
Luckily, the TMW Joseimuke Media Club pick for the month, レムレスブルーの午前2時, seemed to be wholesome, so alongside あかやあかしやあやかしの, and because I was heavily inspired by my friends in voice chat, I finally ventured into output territory and did a few hours of 朗読 with these two unvoiced VNs. I also had a brief opportunity to read in voice chat while a native Japanese speaker was watching and got 上手'd for the first time - a clue that I need to put a focus on output more.
The real star of the show this month for me though was the VN Club's quarterly pick, White Album 2. My expectations were high for this one, since its one of the admin's favorite games, and finally, finally, I was not disappointed.
The writing has been spectacular so far, and the music just adds to the mood and vibe so much that I couldn't stop reading the introductory chapter for three days within 6 hour sessions.
Gosh, so jazzy, its so good! My favorite kind of music. I love vibing to this while studying grammar - it makes it less painful to do.
I'm actually still very excited to continue reading White Album 2. It gives me so many butterflies when I think about it, so it will be my main read for February alongside the VNs I've dedicated for 朗読, and quite possibly yet another otome game from the club.
At least I learned something from this - my comfort zone is my comfort zone for a reason. It's fine to try out new things, but if it makes me frustrated or uncomfortable, its not going to be worth it regardless of how much it can improve my skill. *coughgrammarcough*
-☆-
Here's to hoping for better concentration and grammar progress in February! Still don't know how I'm going to go about studying it, but hopefully whatever it is includes better time management and just reading more than I currently have. Clearly, something I was doing was working, since I could comprehend well enough and in turn produce lengthy and detailed reviews, but output, output, is where it comes down to, and the thought of it getting stalled makes me worried. It's either the dedicated grammar study or the 朗読 that's going to push it further, and I'm going to try my best on dedicating time for both.
Thanks for reading, and I'll catch you all next time! (*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡
