Just started butterfly soup 2, and I’m really hoping this crush stays one-sided! Akarsha is putting so much pressure on the mere idea of romance? I know she’s dramatic in general (and the detail of her brother being used to this and casually offering a snack when she flopped on the sofa was so cute) but this seems tangled up in some real issues :(
On the other hand, it looks like this all started when she realized Noelle really honestly saw through her, and still wanted to be friends. Like that is a wonderfully sweet starting point
I’d still prefer a deepening friendship to a second couple (especially since this is Noelle we’re talking about) but I’lol keep an open mind

Butterfly Soup 2 Asks #1
It's that time again...I-just-released-a-game-and-am-answering-questions-about-it Time!
I get way too many asks to answer individually, so I've consolidated some commonly-asked ones along with a few I thought would be fun to answer!! Sorry if your ask isn't in here!
I put all the lore/character questions first and all the "real world" questions (like about the merch shop) at the bottom. Obviously there's spoilers below so if you haven't played Butterfly Soup 2 already go do that!
LORE
What was Akarsha thinking when she confessed to Noelle that it was her brother who sent the chat message and not her? Did she think Noelle would remember? Or did she know Noelle wouldn’t?
Akarsha thought Noelle would remember. In Akarsha’s mind, that incident was so conspicious and embarrassing, there’s almost NO WAY Noelle would forget it. To Akarsha, this was practically her telling Noelle directly, “I have a crush on you.”
Unfortunately, it was much less memorable on Noelle’s end because she didn’t see Akarsha in that way and genuinely did believe it was just her brother typing nonsense at the time. And it doesn’t help that it was buried in months’-worths of Akarsha’s wacky messages.
When Noelle doesn’t really respond to her confession at the assembly, Akarsha has two theories:
Noelle remembers, and doesn’t like her back
Noelle doesn’t remember (unlikely)
And she doesn’t know which one it is.
You guys are going to hate me for this, but because they’re Disaster Gays it takes them YEARS after that to become official.
As I was writing the assembly scene I kept thinking: If only Min could possess one of them for 10 seconds and just blurt out “I like you, will you go on a date with me”! It would’ve saved them literal years of confusion and turmoil...
Why was Akarsha in handcuffs at the end of the game?
You’ll understand when you’re older. Don’t worry about it!
It was so out of character for Noelle to start crying over Akarsha when she got hurt!
Noelle is so emotionally repressed 24/7 that when something jabs her unexpectedly, she sometimes loses control and it all starts rushing out like water out of a pressurized tube. That's why she randomly starts crying when Chryssa praises her in the first game.
So in my opinion, if she suddenly thought Akarsha was possibly dead or seriously hurt, she'd react how she did (as corny as it is)! I think that part also got colored by something that happened partway through development. My dad fell and hit his head on something so hard that he nearly died! So when Akarsha falls and hits her head, I think I see it as a lot more serious and scary than most players do.
This actually reminds me of a bit I’ve had in my head for many years now! When Noelle's in college, it's her first time in an environment where Asians are a minority. So she doesn't have asian food for a long time, but isn't aware that it's bothering her.
One day Min drives over to her college and takes her to H-Mart, and when they walk in Min goes "ok I know it's Korean and not like Chinese or whatever" and out of nowhere Noelle starts crying
Why do Noelle's joints crack every time she sits or lies down?
Because she’s stiff and doesn’t exercise enough. It’s harmless but whenever Diya hears it, she’s like :(
Is Ester’s webcomic based on/a reference to (webcomic here)?
Nope! Ester was inspired by a few friends of mine, including one who worked on her stories at school in a notebook. Her webcomic’s plot is based on a story idea I had at her age.
Are you SURE X character doesn’t have autism/ADHD? It’s so obvious!
My original answer to this years ago was “I didn’t intentionally do any research on either of those conditions, and I wasn’t aiming to portray them specifically.”
Well..........A while ago, I finally properly started doing research, and a lot of what I learned about autism sounded eerily relatable. So I took every autism diagnostic test I could find online and they all said I was autistic. I’m like 75% sure I am, but at my age I’m not sure I’ll ever get a real diagnosis.
So maybe all my characters are accidentally neurodivergent because I am? I feel like Diya is for sure because I gave her a lot of traits I relate to that I now know are signs of autism.
What are Akarsha and Noelle’s kids like? Do they have any pets?
I think I'll keep it secret for now, sorry! But I saw this comment on Reddit once and this is their family on April Fool’s day. Akarsha is the one faking a heart attack and Noelle is the one making the soup
Tumblr media
Before they had kids, Akarsha and Noelle got the most fucked up old cat from the shelter because Akarsha felt sorry for him. He’s affectionate toward them, but he’s rude to their guests like Diya/Min and hisses at them for no reason.
How does Akarsha's parents feel about her and Noelle dating?
Before Noelle and Akarsha started dating, Akarsha's parents really liked Noelle. She made such a good impression on them at the birthday party that she became their Favorite Friend, so they'd ask Akarsha about her a lot.
One day Akarsha watches an LGBT+ movie with her parents and thinks "Since they like the movie so much, they'll be okay with my sexuality!”
Akarsha's dad is cool with it, but her mom isn't. She says those things only work in movies, and that those people aren’t happy in real life. She blames Akarsha's dad for constantly saying fruity things and in the same breath goes "Everyone thinks girls are hot! That's just normal"
She and Akarsha's dad have a few arguments over it and after Akarsha's dad claims he'll go on a "hunger strike" (???) she does come around. She ultimately becomes a very supportive Ally who sends Akarsha random news articles about gay celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres
So by the time Akarsha and Noelle actually start dating, Akarsha's parents are onboard with it. They end up being the family Noelle always wished she had
Real world questions
When is the online store coming back? I’m hoping to reopen it within the next couple months! I’m hoping to restock Min’s jacket and the charms, and I wanna add new prints and plushies of the main four. If anyone has manufacturer recs for any of these that they’re willing to share, please let me know!
Are you going to make a Butterfly Soup 3?
I have an idea for a third game, but there’s a couple other projects I’m busy with (and am pretty excited to show you guys!) so I won’t be making it for several years.
Is it alright if I write a fanfic of Noelle and Akarsha’s wedding/smut/my headcanon of the characters being trans/etc etc etc ?
Write whatever you want! Just please be mindful of younger fans and make sure to tag sensitive content appropriately. And don’t ask me to read it because I can’t! I’m legally not allowed to.* *EDIT: Okay, this was a bit of an exaggeration, but I've heard that it's a bad idea for a variety of reasons! So it's a can of worms I'm not going to open as a creator

do you think youll ever bring back the tenth grade fic ? it was my favorite ^__^
I'm always thinking about bringing it back, I just gotta write it lol. It's difficult <3 But as a treat for Bsoup 2 day, here's most of what I have so far for the next chapter:
TENTH GRADE FIC, unpublished Chapter 8 excerpt
by NoveltySonicSockAppreciator (dorky-zuko)
As the girls (plus Pratik) exited the vehicle, they found themselves all a very small part of a very large, wooded world. Redwood trees the size of downtown skyscrapers shot straight up into the sky all around them, and their campsite was directly beside one of the largest of them. The thick canopy of leaves above blocked out both the moon and stars, leaving their little group shrouded in a nearly impenetrable gloom.
From the rear of the van came the sound of a click, and a ghostly pale face appeared out of the darkness.
“Boo!” it yelled, and Pratik, still half asleep, jumped straight into the air. Beside him though, Akarsha only sighed loudly.
“Daaaad, knock it off,” she said, walking over and yanking the flashlight out of her father's hands.
“Oookay,” he said, laughing to himself and releasing the flashlight without a fuss. He produced a second from the van’s trunk and switched it on as well, then shined its beam directly in Akarsha's face. “I guess tenth grade is when girls get too big to be scared?”
Akarsha shook her head. “Dad, that wouldn’t have scared me when I was five.”
“Yes it would have!” said Pratik, appearing at her side and giving her a hard shove, which failed to move his sister an inch. “You would too be scared!”
Akarsha knelt down to look her brother in the eye. “Were you scared?” she asked, raising her eyebrows.
“NO!” Pratik shouted, only to have his mother walk over to shush them again.
Akarsha grabbed an armful of supplies out of the van and walked back over to her friends. Min and Diya were standing close together, talking in hushed voices, while Noelle watched.
“I’m just saying,” Min insisted quietly, standing on their tiptoes to put a comforting arm around their partner’s shoulders, “if you were scared, I’d protect you.”
“Wasn’t scared,” Diya replied.
“Yeah, but if you were-”
Diya interrupted Min by reaching down and poking their cheek. “You were scared.”
Min spluttered indignantly before swiping Diya’s accusing finger away with a hand. Beside the pair, Noelle laughed quietly. Akarsha walked up and dumped her armful of supplies unceremoniously on the ground.
“There’s plenty of stuff to unload... if anyone feels like showing off,” she said, giving Diya a knowing glance. The tall girl’s face lit up, and she practically vanished in a puff of dust as she immediately ran off towards the back of the van.
“Not cool to use my girlfriend for free labor, man,” Min said, shaking their head disapprovingly, even as Diya walked back into view with most of the group’s supplies in her arms and an enormous smile on her face.
“Nah, look at her,” Akarsha insisted. “She loves it.”
The campsite itself was right at the base of the nearest redwood tree, and was currently being illuminated by the van’s headlights. Still, even with that bright illumination, it was difficult to set up camp in the dark. Akarsha’s parents explained how to place and position the poles and pegs, but none of the girls seemed to be able to get the hang of it. Noelle held the instructions right in front of her face, and tried loudly directing the other three, but none of them bothered to listen to her. Min was especially keen about using the mallet to hammer in the pegs, but they were even more keen to just start using the mallet to hit anything within reach. And Akarsha interrupted everything after only a few minutes when she suddenly threw a tent tarp right on top of Noelle, before wrapping her in a tight hug and trapping her inside. Of course, Noelle herself immediately ended her shrill recitation of the tent instructions to begin shouting indignantly and squirming around trying to escape Akarsha’s grasp.
Eventually Akarsha’s mother came over to once again get them to be quiet. “Haven’t you lot managed to get anything done?” she asked, exasperated.
Then, at that exact moment, from a little ways off, Diya spoke up. “All finished.”
Everyone’s necks snapped around to see a perfectly assembled tent, poles attached to pegs hammered deep into the ground, all covered by an expertly folded tarp, complete with Diya standing right in front of the opening flap and smiling broadly at all of them.
“Ah-ha!” said Akarsha’s mom, pointing at Diya. “Now, why can’t you all be more like her?”
Diya beamed.
Soon enough, under Diya’s expert guidance, the group assembled the other tent. While they’d been working, Akarsha’s father had assembled a third, larger tent a little ways off to one side, and between all three tents Pratik had successfully made fire. He pulled a lit branch from within the blaze and waved it about wildly and happily above his head, until his mother ran over to stop him.
Finally all four teens slumped down into canvas seats, unfolded and propped up beside the fire. Min was still holding the mallet, and every few seconds they would use it to smack something. One time, the ‘something’ they ended up smacking was Noelle’s arm.
“Violence!” Noelle yelped angrily, reeling back in her chair so hard she almost toppled over. She managed to keep her seat, however, and then glanced piteously over at Diya, who smiled patiently.
“Min...” was all Diya needed to say, and Min smirked sheepishly and dropped the hammer.
“Sorry, oh mighty Tent Master,” they said reverently, inclining their head in Diya’s direction.
With the mallet safely on the ground, Noelle looked at Diya with gratitude. “Thanks Diya,” she said, but Diya only frowned at her. Finally Noelle sighed and rolled her eyes. “I mean, thanks Tent Master.”
Diya continued to look very pleased with herself.
After a few minutes, Akarsha produced a bag of marshmallows. “S’mores!” she shouted, prompting her mother to once again shhhh her. Her father passed around a bundle of metal sticks, while Akarsha passed out the marshmallows.
“Mallow...” said Min appreciatively as they accepted the sugary white cylinder from Akarsha.
“Mallow,” Akarsha agreed, nodding. And soon the pair of them were chanting “Mallow! Mallow! Mallow!” back and forth to each other until her very aggrieved-looking mother practically begged them both to stop.
Once everyone had a stick and a mallow, they all started roasting them over the fire. “I’ve never had a some more,” Noelle confessed quietly, as she held her stick apprehensively over the flames.
Min looked as if Noelle had just slapped them. “It’s s’more, you freak,” they said venomously.
“It... is...” Diya agreed, looking embarrassed on Noelle’s behalf.
Noelle blushed. “Sommore?” she tried tentatively, only to have Min groan loudly at her. She was still trying to get the pronunciation right when her marshmallow caught fire. She screeched and pulled the end of her stick out of the flames, trying to blow on the mallow to put it out, but without success. Min laughed at her as the incinerated marshmallow eventually sloughed right off the stick and landed with a splat on the ground.
Noelle looked down at it forlornly, but before Min could get in a cutting remark, Akarsha was there with a finished smore in her outstretched hands. “Here,” she said, handing it to Noelle. “Ignore Min, they burned their marshmallow too.”
“Huh?” said Min, who had been too busy laughing at Noelle to pay attention to their own mallow. “Hey, wait, shit!”
Noelle couldn’t help giggling as Min tried desperately to put out their own burning mallow, and then looked down at the s’more Akarsha was offering her. The marshmallow was crisped a golden brown, perfectly cooked without any burning, and the heat of it had just started to melt the chocolate that was sandwiched with it between the two graham crackers.
“Thank you,” she said finally, taking the s'more from Akarsha’s grasp.
“Never had a s’more, huh?” Akarsha asked, raising an inquisitive eyebrow.
“No, this will be my first.”
Akarsha laughed nervously. “Ha, no pressure for me then.”
This was, of course, an immense lie. The moment Noelle had said out loud the words “I’ve never had a some more,” two competing machines had roared to life inside Akarsha’s head. The first, just like Min, had been an almost overpowering urge to yell out “A SOME MORE?!?!” and begin laughing maniacally. The second, however, had been the all consuming thought: Oh my god, I HAVE to be the one who makes Noelle her first s’more. And it HAS to be perfect.
Now Noelle was holding Akarsha’s s’more in her hands and looking down at it curiously, all while Akarsha’s heart hammered in her throat.
“It looks... gooey,” Noelle said finally, as she surveyed for the best angle from which to take her first bite without making a mess.
“You just have to kind of go for it,” Akarsha said, feeling that her nerves couldn’t take much more of this.
Noelle gave her one last look, then finally took a surprisingly huge bite out of the corner of the s’more. She chewed thoughtfully, and then her face broke out in an enormous smile. “It’s good!” she said eagerly, taking another bite, and Akarsha breathed a sigh of relief.
After she had eaten the entire s’more in several large bites, she grinned gratefully at Akarsha. “Thanks again.” As she spoke, a large globule of marshmallow clung to the side of her mouth, and without thinking, Akarsha reached up to point it out.
“You’ve got some-” she started to say, indicating the marshmallow’s location with a finger, but before Noelle could get it, Akarsha’s hand seemed to act of its own accord. Her outstretched finger reached out and wiped the food away on its own, and then for good measure, lingered against Noelle’s soft, warm lips for half a harrowing second.
Both girls blinked in surprise, then blushed and jumped apart. “Sorry!” Akarsha said quickly, glancing down at the offending finger in horror. The bit of marshmallow from the edge of Noelle’s mouth clung to it like evidence of some sort of horrendous crime, and wanting that evidence to disappear as quickly as possible, Akarsha did the first thing she could think of, which was to put her finger into her mouth and suck the marshmallow away as fast as she could. Noelle stared at her, and as the eye contact lingered between the two of them, Akarsha realized again what she’d just done.
Akarsha let out a wordless scream and wrenched her finger out of her mouth, while Noelle’s cheeks burned a bright crimson.
“I’m, uhhh-have to... going away,” Akarsha finally managed, feeling like her brain was on fire. As she hurried away from the campfire and trudged through the undergrowth surrounding their campsite, she was more embarrassed than she ever remembered being. But she could also still taste on her tongue the sweetness of the marshmallow that had been clung to Noelle’s lips. So maybe she might just survive yet.
***
No promises for a release date :) I'm werkin an twerkin as fast as I can over here, but ultimately I can only travel at whatever speed the muse allows. thanks for the ask and for your continued interest <3
Happy Bsoup 2 day everybody!

DAMN christmas headcanons
Diya: vaguely aware of what it’s look through tv and stuff, her family doesn’t celebrate it but she likes the idea of all that food
Min: their family never celebrates but Min has a better handle on it from their time in Florida - is very eager for the excuse to give Diya lots of gifts and nice food tho
Noelle: family doesn’t celebrate and she’s kinda jealous of not having those fun family times she sees on tv but would never admit it, even to herself
Akarsha: her parents celebrate it in a very secular and kinda confused way - her dad owns the most bizarre and incomprehensible xmas sweaters known to man or beast
Akarsha takes Noelle to her folks’ place for xmas and Noelle is in tears of happiness by 7:30pm

Omg Butterfly Soup pjo au...Your mind!!!(also you got any ideas for the others godly parents?👀👀👀)
I think Min and Yun would actually be legacies of Venus with Min child of Mars (with the one set of twins two dads thing that is surprisingly common in mythology)
Diya is clearly Hermes/Mercury
Of course Athena for Noelle
Akarsha has Dionysus/Bacchus vibes if we're staying greco roman, Odin if not
Idk for any minor characters though. Probably Big 3 for Chryssa

About Akarsha
Part 2! This is the same deal as my “About Diya” post, so you can press the hyperlinks to find the source with extra detail!
She is 5’4
Akarsha doesn’t expect Noelle to reciprocate her feelings, so she’s careful to always flirt with her in a way that can be construed as a joke.
She is Indian
Her birthday is 4/20
She is the second oldest of the Deke Squad
Akarsha didn’t realize Noelle overheard her outburst in the gym
She would play games like Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch with Min
Out of D.A.M.N. she is the only real hardcore anime fan
Now that she knows “Sakura”, “Yuki”, and Ester, she has weeb friends to talk about anime to
Akarsha is interested in STEM and becomes a software engineer
She would come out via a stupid bi joke
If she had a cat, she would name something better than “Nyaruto,” like “Speed Stank”
She actually cheats on tests, which weighs on her conscience (as seen in the auditorium). She stops later.
Her hair goes down about halfway between her shoulders and elbow. It looks less because she has fine hair. (See image in this link from Asks 20)
Her favorite movie would probably be an anime movie
She plays the shortstop position. Shortstop fields many balls, giving her many opportunities to mess up and invent new excuses
When angry, she tries to yell/argue, and ends up angry-crying. She uses humor to mask her feelings, so when she’s seriously upset, everything ends up coming to the surface at once.
She likes personality tests and quizzes like “Which Naruto character are you?”
Her personality type is ESFP
Akarsha is smart despite acting dumb, but doesn’t do well on tests (B+/A- is unfortunately considered not doing well in her environment)
She would not have pursued a friendship with Diya under normal circumstances
She became friends with Noelle by pranking her (see long details in Ask 13!)
She has known she was bi for about a year at the time of Butterfly Soup. Spending a lot of time on the Internet helped her awareness
Her dad’s sense of humor is similar to her, and her parents are “big weirdos” so they mostly get along (More details on her dad in Asks 14)
She is only fluent in English because her parents worried about her fitting in and only smoke to her in English
She knows a bit of Spanish from classes at school
Her parents pressure her to know her career and often brag to other parents of her smartness and successfulness
Because of this, she feels like she doesn’t have things together like she should and worries she is not smart and will end up as a failure
When sick, she milks it for sympathy and excuses for what she has done. She acts like she’s on her deathbed and looks pitiful. She also blows her nose with a loud honking noise.
She would not wear double denim
Her windbreaker was based on an image Brianna Lei found (see image in the link here)
Her family is Hindu
She is agnostic, but halfway goes along with it for her family. She eats beef.
She likes junk food like Twinkies, pizza, french fries, etc.
Her favorite cuisine is Mexican food, and her second-favorite is American food
She also likes California burritos, avocados, funnel cake, and Icees
Her favorite fruits are pineapple and kiwi
She and Min dare each other to eat ghost peppers
If she played D&D, she’d be a bard
She taught Noelle what seme meant because she was reading yaoi and it came up in conversation (See 16 for more details!)
Following her conversation with Noelle, she changed her chat name to YAOI SEME (as seen in-game)
She makes weed jokes but only does it rarely
In Overwatch, she is an ironic Torb main and a useless Sombra (see Asks 17 for more details!)
She considers herself a gamer
She likes DS games like Ace Attorney and is addicted to Maplestory
She likes a lot of Ace Attorney characters, but her favorite is Phoenix because she finds him relatable. If someone asks her, she will say it is Spark Bruschel (see image in Asks 17)
She has watched magical girl shows, and her favorite is Madoka Magica
Her posture is not that good
In songs that say Noelle (Teenage Dirtbag) and Noel (like in Christmas songs), Akarsha points it out saying, “It’s you Noelle”
Her surprised sprite is based off of Trucy’s surprised sprite from Ace Attorney. Brianna Lei loves how over-the-top it looks
She went as Guy Fieri for Halloween
During trick-or-treating, she jumped out at the group from behind bushes a few times (see Asks 18 for more details!)
She had a pet snail in elementary school, but accidentally killed it when she tried to wash it with shampoo. She still mourns it
She would not make cuck jokes
She is a middle child
During horror movies, she is jokey and tries to scare the others by grabbing their arms and appearing behind them during tense moments
She screams during horror movies (see more details in Ask 20!)
She goes far away to college, others would have to take a plane if they wanted to see her
Her taste in music is eclectic, with a variety of hip-hop, anime openings, etc.
That’s it! (●'◡'●)

Akarsha: So these are your wedding plans?
Min: Yeah, pretty cool right?
Akarsha: "Ride a motorcycle together down the isle to Check Yes Juliet."
Akarsha: "Enter from two different aisles to different songs like wrestlers but then we kiss."
Akatsha: ...
Akarsha: Are these all just the walking down the aisle part?
Min: *Blushing and looking away* I didn't think I'd get this far!
Akarsha: (Goes back to reading) "Akarsha gives me away because she sucks less than my Dad."
Akarsha: Aww, dude! *Smiling*
Min: *Blushing even more* That's a low bar, don't make it weird!
Akarsha: *Smiling wider* I have -questions-.
Min: ...Like what?
Akarsha: Would I get like a sidecar on the motorcycle, or what?

Now that Aus is officially in 2018 (and now that I’ve come out of my post-NYE coma), here’s my top 10 games of 2017 with justifications. This got a bit long, so list is under the read more.
1. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A beautiful art style and enough stuff to do that I’m still only ~20% through it all despite having poured so many hours into it made this a top contender for my GOTY, but the fantasy motorbike in the DLC cemented this for me as my #1.
2. Butterfly Soup. This almost beat Breath of the Wild for my GOTY, and only lost out because BOTW is huge. A well-written story with easily some of the best game characters of the year (*cough* Akarsha *cough*).
3. Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator. While there were some technical glitches early on, DDADDS is a game that stands up on its dialogue and characters. Even months after playing, Amanda and Damien still hold a special place in my heart.
4. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. One of the first games we got on the Switch, and the one that my parents were good enough at that they were able to enjoy it with me.
5. Life is Strange: Before The Storm. Full disclosure, I haven’t actually played episode 3 yet. While not without its faults, I’m mostly willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for the ‘The Tempest’ sequence towards the end of episode 2.
6. Death Squared. My friend and I played this together the past few years at PAXAus, and it got its full release this year. A solid puzzle game with potential to be both a team-building or team-destroying exercise.
7. Tacoma. While I initially gave it some flack for being a tad similar to its predecessor Gone Home (and a fair way easier, too), on reflection it was still a fairly solid story that hit a lot of the right notes for me. A compelling mystery with a satisfying twist ending that felt earned rather than just tacked on for intrigue purposes.
8. Doom (Switch Port). Bit of a late entry, this; only finished it on the 29th. I was initially unsure as to whether this should count, but I realised that most of the games I played this year weren’t actually from this year and so anything I could do to bulk up the list would probably be okay. Solid combat mechanics, reasonable difficulty curve, and enough left unexplained to feel that the sequel hook at the end was earned.
9. Super Mario Odyssey. While I haven’t finished it yet, what I’ve payed of it so far is promising. Interesting and well-implemented mechanics, a control scheme that serves as a decent justification for the separated Joy-Cons, and the open worlds make it feel like an interesting departure from the franchise’s staples, and I’m interested to see where it goes next.
10. PUNKS - a 2064 story. Okay, I’ll admit I panicked a bit here because I didn’t actually play that many new games this year. This one makes the list because it allows me to praise 2064: Read Only Memories by proxy, and because it does explain one of the main plot holes in an interesting fashion (as well as fleshing out Oliver and Starfucker by helping to further set out the character arcs they went through in the main game).
Honorable Mentions to games that either came out prior to 2017 or that I heard a lot of good things about but haven’t quite gotten around to playing yet:
Borderlands 2, Night in the Woods, Crypt of the Necrodancer, Nier: Automata, 2064: Read Only Memories.

Butterfly Soup - Trivial Trivia Edition!
During the summer of 2020, CaptainScarth (an admin on the Butterfly Soup Wiki page) made a nearly impossible quiz with 69 questions about Butterfly Soup. I'll share some of the interesting facts I found, or some that you may not have considered! You can access the quiz here.
Trivia About The Game
It’s available in 9 languages: English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Czech, Bahas Indonesian, Polish, and Farsi
It was created with Ren’Py
It was released 16 September 2017
Its sequel was announced February 2018
It won the “Best Visual Novel of 2017″ award by PC Gamer
There are 9 butterflies and 10 hearts on the title screen
The first word of the game is “Diya”
Diya
Diya’s first dialogue line was: “What’s that supposed to mean.” This was after Hayden said Diya was more princess-like than Min.
Diya’s worst fear is disappointing her parents. This was mentioned when Min and Diya went to the Oakland Coliseum
Diya hates bittermelon
As a kid, Diya wanted 5 dogs. She said it would be like having 4 friends. Canonically, she ended up getting two as an adult
It had been 5 years since Diya last saw Min as kids
Diya is hard of hearing. She is deaf in her right ear from an infection when she was little. This is mentioned in Akarsha’s chapter when it was explained that Diya turned to hear Akarsha. It is also mentioned in Ask Batch #19
Diya is 5′10 in 9th grade (according to this FAQ) but she was still shorter than Chryssa
The name of Diya’s childhood team was the Collies
Diya’s food hierarchy is: Blue flavor > Peanut butter > Mango > Circle in the center
The last spoken word in Diya’s chapter was character. Noelle was complaining to Chryssa after Chryssa said “Suffering builds character!” to which Noelle responded “I don’t want character!”
The last unspoken sentence was Diya saying in her head: I guess we’re all playing baseball now? happily.
Noelle
The first time the player encounters Noelle, she brought a plastic baggy of grapes and a steel thermos of fried rice to lunch. The next day, she brought stir-fry with bittermelon
Noelle hates bittermelon
Noelle’s first line of dialogue was: “Diya! Help me!” She needed help opening a water bottle
Noelle and Diya became friends because Noelle gifted Diya her doughnut. Diya had thought that Noelle had always been there by default
Noelle set the dry pine needles on fire, not Jerry
The poem Noelle’s dad printed out in her room said “There is no success without hardship”
In Ask #10, it is said that Noelle plays right fielder. Chryssa and Liz put her there because less balls are tossed that way
Snakey’s (the plush Diya gave Noelle) sibling composition is two older brothers and a sister
Akarsha
Akarsha’s first dialogue line is “Ayy!”
Akarsha’s pee-pee time is before class
Akarsha plays shortstop (also in Ask #10)
The last spoken word in Akarsha’s chapter is “you.” This is because Akarsha says that Min likes Diya back and she will help Diya
Akarsha likes Ace Attorney, Zero Escape, and Nabari no Ou, as she suggested names for the caterpillar from these games (and one manga)
Min
Min’s first dialogue in the game was: “THIS IS THE WORST STORY IN HISTORY!”
Min made her imaginary gun (during a flashback to the summer between third and fourth grade) out of rocks
Min drew a giant dagger on her arm with Sharpie as a kid
Min would name her dog Skull Crusher (according to her conversation with Diya at the Oakland Coliseum)
Min and her family moved to Florida.
Min said she had to drink milkshakes instead of boba in Florida (Noelle was also shocked)
Min wanted a Corvette when she got older
Min cut her hair and stopped wearing dresses in grade 2
Min played Sonic Adventure 2 as a kid
Min is the older twin (this is mentioned in Min’s chapter when she refers to herself as ‘noona’ to Jun)
Min and Noelle were accidentally drinking pani at the buffet
Min used the insults lamp post, giraffe, long green bean, and Empire State Building to refer to Noelle
The last word spoken in Min’s chapter was “Bye.”
Miscellaneous
There are 9 people in the Baseball Club and 9 people on the Niles team
The name of the Baseball Club before it was changed was the Monarchs
There were only people who identify with female pronouns in the baseball club by coincidence
Akarsha and Min needed 392 more cents to buy Mario Party at GameStop
Ester’s first line of dialogue was: “Game dates? Who are we playing against?”
The first Baseball Club meeting was on Friday
Liz knows Diya from being at one of Diya’s games when they were little, but in actuality, she played against Diya before she transitioned. Liz didn’t want to out herself, which is why she said that. (Asks #16)
That’s it! At some point, I’ll probably make another post regarding specific trivia Brianna Lei had answered on her Asks that were not explicitly mentioned in the game. If you end up taking the quiz I linked, let me know what you got! (●'◡'●)

Butterfly Soup asks #14
I accidentally wrote an essay about Diya and Akarsha’s parents! Also, how the squad acts when sick, and more
Tumblr media
Diya and Akarsha’s parents have their flaws, but they’re not as bad as Min and Noelle’s.
Like Diya mentioned at the beginning of the game, she doesn’t talk to her parents much because when she does, they’re prone to turning it into a lecture/criticism of her. For instance, if Akarsha were to come up in conversation, they’d go “Akarsha is so outgoing! You should try being more like that”.
Obviously her parents mean well and think they’re doing their jobs as parents, but the little stuff adds up and contributes to her social anxiety (on top of Diya already being hard of hearing). Diya constantly worries about embarrassing herself in front of people/being seen as weird because her parents make it sound like she’s almost always doing something wrong. I actually teared up a bit typing this bc I relate too hard LMAO Because of this Diya doesn’t say much to them, so a lot of their car rides and meals together are in almost complete silence. A car ride with Diya’s mom was actually in an early draft of the game, but was cut because despite being enlightening re: Diya’s personality, it was really boring
Her parents do have some good traits, though! Despite being homophobic, they’re relatively progressive (for asian parents) on gender roles. They support her interests -- seeing how much Diya loves sports, they’ve always let her participate even when they’re more male-dominated ones like baseball. As long as Diya keeps her grades up and doesn’t cut her hair short like Min, they pretty much let her do what she wants. They’re open-minded enough that they will change their minds on things, given enough time.
Akarsha’s parents are big weirdos just like her. Her dad especially has a real sense of humor and is always saying things like “I’m a genius...I have a great idea for an invention. [horrible bad idea invention here, like a phone that gives an electric shock to telemarketers]“ For the most part they get along.
Her parents really pressure her to know what kind of career she’ll pursue, though. Akarsha feels really lost about it, like she doesn’t have things together like she should. They also often brag to other parents that she’s so smart/successful, so Akarsha worries she’s not actually smart after all and will end up as a failure

Noelle can speak Mandarin, she had to attend Chinese school every Saturday for several years. The writing system infuriates her because it’s so inefficient
Akarsha is only fluent in English. Her parents were worried about her fitting in as a kid and mostly spoke to her in English. By the time they realized this was a mistake it was too late. She knows a bit of Spanish from classes at school
Tumblr media
I like this question so I’m publishing it  Noelle (as seen in the game) recognizes that she’s sick, takes cold medication, but then tries to power through school until she physically can’t. She normally wears a surgical mask to prevent contaminating others, but I couldn’t put it in the game because blocking the lower half of her face made her look less expressive
When Diya feels even slightly sick she immediately tries to sleep it off. And when she really is sick she sleeps all day. She heard once that sleeping is good when you’re sick and really took it to heart.
Min drinks one glass of orange juice, is convinced it cured her, and insists that she’s not that sick. She doesn’t cover her mouth when she coughs/sneezes...my terrible snotty child
Akarsha acts like she is on her deathbed and tries to milk it for sympathy/excuses for what she’s done. She blows her nose with a loud honking noise and looks as pitiful as possible.
Tumblr media
Liz is trans!
Tumblr media
Yep, but she doesn’t know it yet! She still thinks she’s straight by default...my silly child...
Tumblr media
I haven’t decided for sure yet, but I’m thinking about properly revealing their names in the sequel
Tumblr media
I had a ton of trouble naming it! Its working title was Queen of Diamonds. I liked it for the puns (diamond/diyamin, etc.), but had to change it because
The tag was already filled with random stuff like Marina and the Diamonds
It was really easy to get wrong, like people would misremember it as “Queen of Hearts”, “Queen of Diamond”, etc.
It made it sound like Diya and Min were more important than Noelle and Akarsha
After realizing I had to change it, I went through this crisis where I couldn’t think of any good names. I’m glad I finally did settle on Butterfly Soup, though -- it’s a bit weird and gross, but I think it fits
Tumblr media
I took most of the photos myself, but a few of them are stock photos.
Tumblr media
Yes, the background used was from the Great Mall!
Tumblr media
It’s been really entertaining seeing people who went to my high school having an out of body experience playing my game
Tumblr media
Good...
Tumblr media
tbh I don’t think she would, double denim doesn’t seem like her aesthetic
Tumblr media
Her windbreaker is based on this, but I’ve never been able to find a site that sells them. I think they’ve all been discontinued for a long time now :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, there are many...While I think it does capture the cringey memey feeling of high school well, I’ll probably put fewer direct memes in the sequel
