I will say that I have a severe bone to pick with ao3 Neil but specifically with Raven!Neil and other similar Canon divergence fics in which people cannot write him in the Nest/in proximity to Riko without turning him into either Kevin or Jean, both in terms of personality and plot beats/importance. We could be having a real conversation about what that universe would actually be like and how a different upbringing would affect the Neil we know and instead Im out here being tricked into reading All For The Game 2: without all the parts I like edition

100% AGREE WITH YOU ON THIS!!!!!!! my thing with most raven!neil aus is that often his personality goes entirely unchanged, and it puts him in a position where, like you said, he becomes kevjean's weird divorce kid. to me, when an author writes the same personality in a different setting for raven!neil, it feels so... shallow?! easy?! truly almost lazy. i think a nathaniel who was brought up to be the butcher's sucessor would be so different from the neil who was raised by mary on the run they would be entirely different characters. i think the neil we know would be changed in irreversible ways by being raised as the butcher's first son, and his personality would be closer to riko's than most aftg fans i feel would be comfortable acknowledging

for me the fun part of raven!neil is the way neil would rock perfect court dynamics if he was raised as nathaniel. riko and kevin would not have been as close if nathaniel was there with them; i don't think nathaniel would take kevin's place so much as he would be in a position where he, as a first son and the direct sucessor of the butcher, would be in somewhat of an equal footing with riko inside the perfect court (but never outside of it, let it be clear). in a situation like this i don't even think kevin and nathaniel would have become friends — i think kevin would have still left and nathaniel would have been the number one hound dog trying to get him back, going way further than jean did in the books to make sure kevin is back where he belongs. actually now that i'm thinking of it i think nathaniel would be pretty close to how andrew is in the first book, which would be very interesting to see :)

jean's life would remain horrible either way. i don't think nathaniel would ever be his anchor so much as he would've been a necessary ally to jean, someone who steps between him and riko because he is in a position to do so and because nathaniel needs jean to keep up with him in court, so in a way that would help jean. i don't know how kevjean's friendship would go in this universe though: would kevin being less close to riko give them more space to be friends or would jean's association with nathaniel push kevin away from the perfect court as a whole? to be perfectly honest, i think kevin and nathaniel would compete to be riko's number two for a long time, and i don't think kevin would win. truly telenovela levels of drama

there are a lot of things in aftg that I think really could’ve just. not been there and I’d have much preferred it. here’s a bit of a vent about things that I dislike about canon (aside from the obvious handling of mental illness and use of slurs and stuff like that. it’s mostly the first two because I do see people talk about 3 a good bit)

1. andrew and roland. this is such a big one for me because like? the twins were underage when they started at edens. at oldest he was probably 17 when it started. and I saw somewhere that he was 23?? like that’s all kinds of gross.

NOT TO MENTION. andrew literally says,

“"Presumably he thinks you're as bad at following directions as he is," Andrew said. "Roland knows I don't like being touched."”

andrew literally had to handcuff roland to make sure he followed his boundaries. even if they were the same age, that’s so fucked up. if he didn’t like the rule, don’t hook up with that person. it’s that simple. im sure there were PLENTY of other people willing to hook up with roland, so why did he choose the underage kid with boundaries you won’t respect??

I really wish I saw more fics of people being upset when they find out about it. if I was nicky and I found out my 23 year old supposed friend was sleeping with my underage cousin that I was the guardian of, id have been fucking livid.

anyways fuck roland, she could’ve given us such a cool bartender and we got That

2. like why did kevin need a girlfriend? that we only hear about once briefly then meet her officially for a second then she’s gone? and I really don’t like how they met in the first place. he was a CHILD, at oldest when they got together he had to be like 19 because he turned 20 after he moved to the foxes. like yeah he was legal by then but she knew him FROM WHEN HE WAS A CHILD. he was like 13 when she was 18.

and then again, when they see each other again in the kings men. they can’t speak in mixed company?? how brain washed could you be from the ravens. she so clearly is just willing to turn a blind eye to all the fucked up shit that happened there. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if she defended riko

3. I really wish nicky respected boundaries. it bothers me that the first openly gay character in the book refuses to respect others boundaries. trying to convince neil he’s gay when he repeats he’s not, kissed him while he was drugged, and the comment about matt being “hung like a bull” is so gross. it implies that nicky was looking in the changing rooms, which is the whole thing that people worry about when changing with queer people :/

Yes, we’re back! Welcome to yet another episode of AFTG Hot Takes, the show where I try my very hardest to piss off the fandom at large.

Next on the chopping block: Thea Muldani

Oh Thea. Where to start, honestly? Should we start with her unhealthy relationship with her college exy team? How she stood by and watched as her boyfriend was abused? Or how about we talk about how old Kevin was when they started dating?

Yeah, I think so too.

Correct me if I’m wrong, because I don’t want to be spreading false facts, but when Thea was in the Nest, Kev was still in high school. She wasn’t there his sophomore year of college (when he broke his hand) because she’d already graduated. That means, at the very least, that there is a four-year difference between the two of them. Wouldn’t be that big of a deal if they were older, you know?

But they aren’t older. If Kev was 19 when he broke his hand, then Thea was 23 at the youngest. If that age gap is correct (it could be larger, but most likely not smaller) then when Thea turned 18, Kevin was only 14.

Assuming Thea started college at 18 and our age gap is correct, then she has known Kevin since he was a freshman in high school.

I’m not sure when they started dating, but it’s reasonable to assume that it was before Kev enrolled at Edgar Allen. Even if they didn’t get together until his freshman year of college, there’s still a shit-ton of grooming going on.

I could also talk about how Thea defended EA at every turn, to the point where she blatantly ignored the abuse of her boyfriend. The abuse of a child.

Remember friends, silence = compliance. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

But I get it, trauma does awful things to your brain and your perception, and the Ravens have trauma pouring out both ears. So, I’m not going to go there. I don’t need to go there, because I have more than enough ammo with Thea’s predatory behavior.

Moral of the story, Thea has known Kevin since she was an adult and he was 14, if not younger. With some of my other posts, I’ve said that if these are things you can ignore then good for you, I won’t fault you for it.

Not this.

If, somehow, you can excuse this in your head, I’d honestly love to hear how. Because I don’t get it.

100% would be altschmerz. i don't fix anything in that fic. in fact i probably make everything worse. logan still dies and he never has a proper relationship w laura and the world still sucks. and i sprinkle in some complicated relationships with latinidad while i'm at it. but i love it <3

🪿 what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

this is a difficult thing to judge cos most of my fics have happy or at least hopeful endings, but i think the fic that has the most rewarding happy ending is keep on keeping on, dean winchester. the first couple of chapters are meant to be absolute hell. but i offset that by ending the story with everyone happy and alive and together :)

throughout all my time in fandom the answer to this has been no. but then i did this thing where i watched iwtv 2022, and my whole world shifted on its axis. so YES, i do, in fact, now write smut. occasionally. i have no idea how to respond to "what kind." it is gay sex.

🪿 do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?

ok when i first answered this question i said lifeboat, a sense8 aftg fic in 2 (if u've read it ur eligible for financial compensation), but i change my mind. most unhinged thing i've ever written is 100% between the desire and the spasm, which, i kid you not, is an all the president's men fusion, which, in case u don't know, is a movie abt watergate. WATERGATE.

🪿 have you ever had a fic stolen?

i feel like the answer is yes, but this was in my quotev days, and that site was exactly what republicans imagine anarchists want for society: complete havoc. anyway! my point is that i think i did have a case of someone copying my work almost word for word during that era, but i was 13 and it was like 250 words worth of writing so i was like whatever.

🪿 have you ever had a fic translated?

YES, i'm very happy to say! many very kind people have translated my work. i'll list them below cos they always do a fantastic job and i'm always hoping they get more recognition for their hard work:

yes! i actually co-wrote right hand on his rifle with my bff liv (@cabeswater). she gave me a lot of ideas while i was crafting it, so it's really just as much hers as it is mine. i'm very happy w it! i would love to write smthn properly w them someday bc they're a phenomenally good writer

i don't know. should i know that? maybe dialogue. i can't say whether i excel at it but i can say with certainty that i enjoy it

in huge favor of it! i love doing that. i tend to do it when i write characters that speak spanish, and when it's done well by other writers? UGH. it makes me want to eat my phone

you’re not a stick in the mud dayurno….. we love you and it’s soooo important to talk about this stuff! especially lately i feel like any criticism for the author is immediately bashed because she might see it, but criticism and hate are such very different things and the racism in the series really SHOULD be addressed and talked about. clearly we all adore these books but there is a very harmful pattern that just ignoring does nothing for. anyway you don’t really have to answer this i just want you to know we love u and im glad you said something, so many of us agree with u and you are not ruining fun by talking about important things!!! pls always feel free to post vents and such on your blog lovie

thank you!!! at the start of this blog i spent a long time talking about this kind of thing and the fandom was remarkably more hostile towards characters (and fans) of color, to a point where the only people really having these discussions in any complexity were me and a few friends, and it made me miserable :)! i don’t even know if anyone has been around long enough to remember my period of inactivity that followed that but of course the reason behind it is that it just wasn’t fun anymore, which is also why i don’t talk about it as often or in length anymore. but seeing how easily any criticism has been swept under the rug, seeing how the things many of us have said years ago were immediately buried under louder voices promoting no-nuance takes on the series, it just felt very terrible. there’s not really any point to this, and i by no means plan to be the hub for these discussions when i’ve done my time already, but it’s still worth talking about. the aftg fandom really will never let you forget its majority is white americans :=)

anyway! thank you cutie for the reminder perhaps i needed it! let’s continue on our planned schedule of having fun and kiking about kevin day online and being good judys
