Azag (2021) is a neat 2-volume rule set and game setting. This is the limited edition from LFOSR. It descends, primarily, from Dungeoneer/Advanced Fighting Fantasy, which makes it a cousin of sorts to Troika. I am tempted to call it the less weird cousin, but that isn’t entirely true — it is just a different sort of weird.

Three attributes. Basic rolling is 2d6, rolling high in opposed contests, rolling low when testing your attributes. Unlike Troika, other dice can be swapped in to simulate greater ease or difficulty — climbing during a blizzard, say, might warrant 2d8 or 2d10 for a Stamina test, depending on the severity of the storm. Combat is more formally structured than Troika, but still pretty fast and loose compared to other games. There are mechanics for social encounters, too, with an ante system that spends Luck, which I really like — it is nice to have a mechanical underpinning for social stuff if you need it. Spellcasting is point-based and the player rolls for success, putting it essentially in line with the skill system. Failure invites calamity. And spellcasters can duel; in this case, casting is an opposed test, and the loser suffers calamity (rather than the cast spell effect — you’re basically dealing with raw arcane energy in a duel). Its a fun, flexible little system!

The world is nice too, cobbled thematically out of early-20th century pulp traditions, particularly Clark Ashton Smith’s stories and Lovecraft’s Dreamlands, both of which feel less explored than say, Conan. It feels a little more restrained and fuzzier at the edges than something like Hyperboria or even DCC. I loooove Logan Stahl’s art, particularly the cover of Volume 2, featuring a snoozing Tsathoggua. In game terms, the world is defined by micro fiction and random tables for encounter seeds and such. These make for an interesting approach that is atmospheric without being overly locked into specific details.

Healing begins when you start having honest conversations with yourself. -Ash Alves

One of the biggest tips that has helped me grow and heal is journaling, more specifically writing letters to my past self and what I wanted to hear from others. To understand what was missing I needed to understand what I wanted to hear from people who hurt me. Telling myself if I heard this it would have gone a long way.

Journal Prompts:

Write a letter to yourself saying how proud of the progress you are making big or small.

Write a honest letter to the people or persons that have hurt you. You don’t have to send it, but it off your chest.

What could I have done differently? Holding ourselves accountable is hard, but in the long run it is worth it.

Jiyul nasceu em um lar religioso, católico. Sendo a filha mais nova dos Kwon, ela tem dois irmãos e uma irmã mais velha, mas a diferença de idade entre eles é grande. Sendo seu pai um antigo político local que tinha a família e a igreja como maiores valores, coisa que sempre foi pura baboseira para a filha mais nova da família.

Desde sempre a pequena Jiyul sofreu dentro de casa por não se encaixar no molde religioso de seus pais, ou por não ser um exemplo na escola. Estudos sempre foi um grande problema para a garota que se saía muito bem nos clubes da escola e sendo gentil com todos, mas as notas, sempre lhe rendiam puxões de orelha e palavras duras. E isso durou até o fim da vida escolar. Que a partir do primeiro ano do ensino médio passou a ser numa escola católica de meninas. Seus pais enxergavam na pobre garota que tinha “algo de errado nela e que Deus não aprovava”. Mas, o novo ambiente só serviu para que a garota sim se encontrasse e descobrisse que amava outras garotas.

Quando não estava estudando, ela trabalhava na loja de conveniência do bairro com a esperança de sair de casa assim que terminasse a escola. Mas seu sonho de liberdade foi impedido com uma doença de sua mãe, por ser a única que ainda morava com os pais, a responsabilidade ficou para cima dela juntamente com o trabalho e a faculdade de veterinária que veio iniciar aos vinte anos.

Por um tempo ela teve uma namorada e Jiyul chegou ao seu limite de “esconder” a sua sexualidade da família. O dia infernal de sua vida veio durante o Chuseok, com seus pais e irmãos reunidos em casa. Ela contou que era lésbica e que namorava uma mulher por quase um ano. A reação não foi outra, foi expulsa de casa com o direito apenas de retornar dias depois para buscar suas coisas. Desde então ela não voltou mais.

Morou por um ano com a ex namorada depois de ter sido expulsa de casa, mas o relacionamento terminou de uma maneira péssima e Jiyul deve de se virar como pôde para conseguir um novo lar, até chegar no complexo há uma semana. Há um mês ela iniciou como bartender em um bar não muito longe da região, tendo encontrado o apartamento durante esse tempo e boas recomendações do local apesar das falhas na estrutura.

Jiyul está feliz com a nova etapa de sua vida, pronta para criar novos laços e talvez até fincar raízes por ali, tudo que ela mais sente falta nos últimos tempos é de ter pessoas para se sentir parte de algo, uma família para chamar de sua e talvez até um novo amor.
