“Are you actually serious right now?”
Kaveh groans, pinching the bridge of his nose when you toss aside one of the Cor Lapis that you insisted on examining. Don’t get him wrong; he values quality more than you would, but to handle that pricey ore like it’s a child’s toy, has his pockets feeling empty (not that they’re ever full, anyway).
You, however, don't really share his opinion. In your eyes, quality really does mean everything; if this Cor Lapis is unusable for its original purposes (see: for the Traveler's commission from the Adventurer's Guild), then you would just have to separate it from the rest. Plus, it’s not like you're throwing it away in a dustbin, are you? You can always make use of this one after all of you are done with the task.
So, what is it that he’s so irritated over? They’re not giving that one to the Traveler, surely...
“What?” You raise an eyebrow, your temper being just as short as his. He scoffs at your confusion, finding it ridiculous as he kneels to grab the abandoned Cor Lapis.
Muttering under his breath – “You clearly don’t know how to be careful with gems like these.” – he inspects it closely, crossing his fingers in hopes that it hasn’t been scratched or damaged or whatsoever - the Traveler would kill him, he’s sure! People would’ve paid a hefty amount as far as he’s been told.. and he doesn’t want to witness their rage if they found out that you apparently didn’t care about the costs of these invaluable ores. Thankfully, the ore survives with no scratches after such a horrible, blunt hurl.
You clear your throat out of nowhere, pushing yourself upwards so that you're released from crouching on the ground. “Actually, these are called crystals,” you state, matter-of-factly, your nose pointing towards the sky above you two. “Crystals and gems are different, if you couldn’t tell. I guess even the Akademiya’s most astounding student still fail at discerning something as small as this.” With your arms crossed, you don a smug look on your face, as if winning this petty argument is your only goal today.. aside from earning mora, of course.
But Kaveh only mocks you with a tsk, looking away when his head unhelpfully thinks fondly of your pride-filled face. “Crystals? I thought a junior so high-headed like yourself would know this, but-“ he stands up, with the Cor Lapis in his hand, “- a gem is made out of precious minerals. Y’know, like diamonds. Even if it wasn’t a gem, I was figuratively saying that you really don’t know how to manage valuable stuff like this!-“
“Oi! What are you two doing, squabbling behind our backs?!” A whiny voice interrupts, and the body that belongs to it flies in between them. Paimon – bless her for intervening in their pointless debate – frowns, a noticeable pout on her small face, and gestures to the Traveler, whose expression displays their lack of amusement. Suddenly, you feel a bit sheepish; yeah, that’s right, you came here to help them with the commission, not to argue with some guy who claims that his seniority makes him a lot more knowledgeable than you are!
You clear your throat, “well,” you said, gritting your teeth, “we were both just discussing how very important it is to give our client the best ores of its kind, right?” And Kaveh would be a total idiot if he ignores the cues you're giving; unfortunately, his short temper only adds to the fact that he’s not a very good liar, so his honesty bleeds through immediately without much thought given.
“No! What, you’re not going to tell the Traveler that you basically decided that the Cor Lapis we gathered here isn’t good enough and threw them away?”
“That was not what I–!”
“Oh, sure, deny it all you want! At this point, I can even defend Alhaitham because at least he knows the difference between gems and crystals – and he’s from Haravatat!”
“Ugh, why you little–!”
A shrill shriek cuts their bicker short, and Paimon screams unintelligible words, except for her first sentence: “Look out!!” She points wildly towards something behind the two of you, prompting you to turn around-
-and the sight of a charging Ruin Hunter is not one you expect to see at Huaguang Stone Forest.
You had no time to react, not when the drill aims towards you specifically. Your eyes widen, your breath hitches, and you couldn’t do anything but stare as it finishes its charge.
Until Kaveh pulled you away in a split second, knocking the two of you both off balance and onto the ground. His arms wrapped around you – you stay unaware of its almost protective nature – as the automaton drives its drill into the air, where you last stood. Your breathing comes in quick gasps, and you know you're supposed to be used to this; the fighting and the unpredictability of the monsters you fight, but for the first time in a while, your heart threatens to leap out of your chest.
Kaveh groans, pushing you both up to a sitting position. His eyes skim through your figure, “are you alright?”
Effectively, the concern in his voice – “Is that real?” you wonder – pulls you out of your daze, and as you stand up, away from him, your bow is immediately summoned to your side. How careless, you tsk, overlooked the possibility of automatons being around this area of Liyue.
And as much as you don't like his guts, you wouldn’t even think about putting his life on the line, especially when this is something you could've easily predicted.
Kaveh ignores the fact that you paid no mind to his question. It would be good if it stayed that way, he didn’t want to deal with you interrogating him about that slip-up of genuine worry in his tone. Instead, he focuses back on the situation at hand, when the Ruin Hunter begins its Artillery Mode. It’s dangerous, and his mind tells him that they should all just run, that they should not waste energy fighting that today, but that’s because he’s a claymore user and the Traveler is a sword fighter; both of which are melee, helpless when that machine rises to the air.
But you use a ranged weapon. With one Geo-infused, precise shot, you bring the Ruin Hunter to a crash, temporarily disabling the flying giant. A huge smirk replaces your earlier fright, and you turn towards the other two with a newfound urge to settle her revenge.
He thinks that you're amazing, the way that you quickly recover from that surprise attack.
“So, you two gonna keep gawking or are you gonna permanently put this thing to sleep?” You taunt, and yell something incoherent from a distance, activating your vision’s potential. A tornado visibly forms for a second, and it grows larger, trapping the Ruin Hunter in an artificial sandstorm. Ah, yes, of course a Geo vision could create that! He's not about to question where the winds are coming from.
The Traveler nods from the corner of Kaveh’s eye, quickly running towards it before it gets a chance to wake up. To their willingness to fight, he sighs, and although he’s not the strongest in this group, it would be highly risky and rude if he leaves them to themselves. Kaveh calls for Mehrak, and his claymore, and thinks of himself as insane; logically speaking, he’s trained to be aware of safety risks as an architect and should’ve convinced these two to escape while they can.
“Yeah- I’m coming! Archons, this is crazy…”
Yet, if it’s you, he thinks that even Alhaitham’s rationality is thrown out of the window, and that guy has zero common sense. No, literally, take it from him, a guy who has to deal with his tasteless sense of decoration and furniture.
Besides, now that he’s caught up with them, he’s suddenly feeling a little more furious for the heart attack it gave him, and the stupid mistake he made when saving her. A mistake that he hopes you wouldn’t make fun of him for, and prays to the Dendro Archon that you'd forget it ever happened.… Honestly, it wasn’t so bad that time, when they were so close to each other. If only you could afford to be a little bit nicer, he thought, and know the difference between crystals and gems.

The end of classes/preparing for finals is absolutely kicking my ass right now, so I'm repeating to myself the work ethic/words of wisdom that my family instilled in me since I was young.
From my grandfather: "work hard, but not too hard (and always brush your teeth)."
And from my mom: "it doesn't have to be good, it just has to be done."
This next week and a bit will suck but I'm gonna power through it and then it'll be over!

You liked to believe that you've lived a pretty normal life.
It was pretty ordinary, this routine that you're familiar with. You wake up sometime before dawn so you can get ready for your shift, arrive right on time, and leave your workplace as soon as you can. And it wasn't like everything was the same each day - you see different faces every now and then, coming from different parts of the city, and every conversation leads to even longer talks. And yeah, there were some accidents you couldn't avoid — like that one time, where you accidentally spilled a customer's drink twice — but all was well.
And you were comfortable with this life you've built on stable pillars.
... So if you were so used to the sense of normalcy, and learnt to stay out of trouble, why were you following this sketchy guy with his date?
...
You hid near the alleyway, palms covering your face as you sighed.
To be fair, you were not trying to act like a good Samaritan - a hero, if you would. You were really only worried for the lady draped over the guy's arm, like a fur coat of some sort, right after they left the building. Without any evidence or witnesses, you couldn't just say outright that the guy had basically dropped something in her drink, and it was a little strange to you how nobody caught him red-handed in such a public spot.
This wouldn't count as stalking, would it? That's already a crime on its own, but.. you already feel horrible if you had decided to do nothing. Your conscience wouldn't forgive you if anything happened to that poor woman.
Peeking from your hiding spot, you almost missed the two of them taking a turn for another alleyway, and you panicked. You may have lived here for a while, but you knew nothing about the more secluded streets - if you were to go there alone... A weapon. You'd need a blunt object, or something. Your hands rummaged through your pockets, and you only managed to retrieve a pen (if you ever lost the cafe's pens while you jot down orders) and your keys.
These would do, right? Right.
You waste no time chasing him down the alleyway. In hindsight, this was stupid. Going alone was always a stupid choice. Maybe you should've reconsidered- but if you had left for one second and the lady became a missing person, you wouldn't forgive yourself.
You can't think like that. She was still alive and well, if not a bit drowsy, but alive. You'd get the two of you out of there and you'd file a report immediately.
You rushed towards the alleyway.
.
The alleyway stared back. Empty. A long, narrow street, with shadows cast by the tall buildings between it. No sign of life, no sign of that lady you were so worried about, and where was that man, crap, that man--
You turned around to flee, but a figure stood tall behind you, fangs bared and arms outstretched. And you swore that nobody — or, rather, nothing else — had been following you or that strange couple, but this thing hissed and growled, clearly not human, and you were sure that your life was flashing before your very eyes-
A blade struck through the creature's chest, and it shrieked. Loud enough for you to crumble and fold into yourself, clutching to your ears so you'd face no eardrum damage. Even then, you still heard it sputter, and the blood that spat out through the clean wound was probably the second loudest thing you heard before it collapsed on itself. Its body disintegrates before your eyes.
Behind that monster, stood a man. His highlighted, yet dark hair definitely stood out first, but then his eyes caught you frozen. Unlike that creature, which was dark, and attempted to consume you with its shadow, this stranger's eyes were the brightest features on him.
Gold.
There was no mistaking his eyes, pure gold as they came. Even in the dark, they seemed to shine - maybe that was how he came to find you, even though the hostile noises from that thing should've been enough to alert any passer-by. In his hand, the blade that cut through the monster's body, almost with no effort whatsoever, despite the small size.
My saviour! You thought, and you opened your mouth to speak — thank him for coming, and for protecting you — until his gaze landed on you, and suddenly, you became the object of his attentive glare. Yikes. Okay, maybe you're just being hopeful that someone came to your rescue, yeah - if that thing somehow stalked up behind you, there was no way that this man, too, was following you. And that thing. Whatever it was.
.. Actually, what was it? You've seen your fair share of large animals, but nothing so...
"Demon." Your knight in shining armor spoke up, amidst the silence of the alleyway and the faint bustling of the street behind him. You gaped at the sound of his voice, a little startled he had even started to talk, though he took it as a cue that you didn't catch what he said. "What you saw just now. That was a demon."
"...Demon? That thing?"
He sighed. Okay, so maybe he wasn't in the mood to speak to stupid people-- but you weren't stupid; imagine just having survived a demon attack! That's unheard of, one, and secondly, people would call you insane if you were to tell anyone about this! (Not that you would. Right? Right.)
Or maybe he was insane and he was one of those bad guys who like to pull a prank on innocent people working in cafes.
"I've said too much. Best to forget about this. You were not supposed to be caught in the affairs of our world." His eyebrows furrowed a little deeper, his hand storing away his weapon in his pocket. "And you don't talk about this to anyone. Nobody else. It's for your own good, mundane."
The nerve-! No, forget it. Judging from the way he looked, he would probably just leave you if you had anything more to say.
No, wait-
"Did you see a girl being dragged away by some random, real sketchy guy?! I was following them earlier, but they disappeared the moment I came here and--"
"Those two weren't real."
"-- I'm worried if this is some- wait, what?"
"You were fooled. The demon lured you here." He averted his eyes towards the remains of the demon, or where you thought it should be, because there wasn't anything left on the ground anymore. It was completely gone. But the stranger didn't look so alarmed, so.. that was nothing to worry about, right?
He cleared his throat. "... Knowing that you're perfectly able to see things that the naked eye shouldn't, makes me restless."
"Why's that?"
"All humans are born with their third eye closed after their infant stages of life. If this gets out to the Institute..." The stranger then held his hand out, as if gesturing for something, "give me your phone."
Okay, now he's just weird. So he's your saviour and a thief. "Uh, what are you gonna do with my phone?" And the dude just had the audacity to roll his eyes.
"If there's going to be a time where you're in trouble, and it's not something even the cops can handle, it would be wise to have my contact." He bent his fingers slightly, but flexed might be the right word, and gestured again. "In case this happens again."
... Honestly, how do you reject a man that pretty? Without much hesitation — shameless, that you are — you handed your phone over to him, and watched closely as he typed in his number and name. Before you could make out the letters — you realized that he had a pretty short name, which somehow suited his short stature — he turned the device off and gave it back to you.
"Do not tell anyone about this. The longer you keep this a secret, the better." He said, before leaving you alone in the alleyway, joining the busy street as if he hadn't just taken down a monster twice his size.
.. You later learned that his name was Xiao.

okay so pardon me as I wax poetic late at night about solarpunk again but like
and once again, I'm biased because I'm co-hosting the aesthetic week event, you know the drill, but
I feel like sharing our projects--big and small--are so important because they can inspire other people to do their own. And obviously this can be about sharing news about climate action, and scientific projects and progress and discoveries, but tonight I'm thinking about crocheting.
As we think about the future we want to create as solarpunks, we trade ideas. And oftentimes a lot of the ideas we trade are about futures with barter systems, where many many people do crafts like sewing and mending and knitting and the like. But--and I could easily be the only one but I feel like I'm not--I personally was too nervous to start many crafts myself. Because I didn't know what I'd do with the craft, if I was even capable of it, or if it was too big and complex for me. I'd been tossing around the idea of learning how to crochet for years, and my mom's been tossing the idea around just as long if not even longer for herself, but y'know what brought me over? You know what finally got me to give it a shot?
An online Solarpunk friend sharing pictures of a bag.
I saw that bag and I went 'huh maybe I could do something like that,' and within a few days I'd bought a bunch of yarns and hooks and was on a call (with a different online friend) learning how to do some basic stitches and knots to get started. By the end of the night, I was teaching myself how to make granny squares, with the help of a (different) online friend writing instructions to help me out as I got stuck.
And maybe I finish my bag, or my scarf, and I post a picture online--not even a professional, pinterest-ready photo, just a quick pic of it laid across my bed or something--and I inspire someone else to start crocheting. Hell, I've already inspired my mom to take a crack at it once the Christmas season is over.
But it doesn't even have to be me. It doesn't even have to be crocheting. Maybe someone posts a picture of a hat they just finished knitting, and someone else decides to pick up a loom or some knitting needles. Maybe someone crafts a birdhouse or a desk or a bench out of wood, and someone picks up a hammer for the first time. Maybe someone crafts something awesome out of clay and wire, and someone gets inspired for a new project. It can even be across artforms! Maybe someone sews an awesome dress, and someone else is inspired to write a short story by it. Maybe someone writes a short story, and someone else goes to paint a mural somewhere inspired by a scene in that story.
And in a sense I find it incredibly solarpunk. To inspire one another to learn and grow, develop new skills, to always find inspiration and hope to keep trying new stuff.
Some people laugh and scoff at the idea of posting ~aesthetique~ homemade clothes to the solarpunk tag, a handful think the whole aesthetic week event is pointless, but I find it the opposite. Solarpunk is about revolution, but it can't always be big revolutions. Sometimes its the small revolution of picking up a craft that changes your life, or creating an image that inspires others to fight for a better future. It can be about writing something that makes others question why things are the way they are, when they can be better. Sometimes the desire for a nice knit scarf can be the start of a mini barter system, or become part of the mutual aid we all dream of.
I feel like I had a point with this but I forgot. But uhm... yeah.

MILL & NINE as EDEN & JIHOON — 'bump up business' (2023)
[id: two gifs of eden & jihoon from the korean drama 'bump up business.' eden is wearing an open white blazer with a crochet mesh shirt underneath. jihoon is wearing a buttoned black blazer with a deep V-neckline. jihoon pulls eden towards him so they are standing side by side, wrapping an arm around eden's shoulder. jihoon turns to look at eden, saying something indistinct, finishing his sentence as he looks away and directs his attention back to the camera in front of him, out of frame. the colored caption reads: MILL & NINE as EDEN & JIHOON — 'bump up business' (2023) /end id]
