as i took these photographs on my Canon AE-1 on my last trip to Osaka and Kyoto, i thought about how i’ve managed to capture some pretty awesome moments and scenes. that my quick reflexes and deliberate composition of some of my shots would definitely turn out well once developed and scanned. hell, i was pretty confident that my best shots from this trip was captured on film.
then i got my scans back and i was completely devastated. an entire Cinestill 800 roll was completely washed out (probably due to the airport x-ray machines, which was my bad no matter how much i spin it in my noggin) and only a couple of images came out somewhat decent. two Agfa Vista 400s came out rather underexposed, and the final roll of Adox Color Implosion i had didn’t expose as i had intended it to. while i was mostly happy with the composition for most of the shots, they ultimately came out either washed out or underexposed. after the last time i used my Canon AE-1, i can safely say that the camera’s light meter has died.
and it was such a shame because for this trip i had originally intended to bring a new old camera i had procured, the Asahi Pentax 6x7, but due to it’s faulty film winder, i decided to bring the AE-1 instead. and what a shame, because i genuinely thought i had some good shots here. but that’s not to say that all the shots were crap. in fact, some of the shots taken with the Adox Color Implosion produced some rather moody results, which i can only attribute to sheer luck on my part. so it wasn’t a total loss after all, i ended up with some shots that border on the lomography spectrum of photographs, which wasn’t my intention at all, but i guess i’ll take whatever i can get. but suffice to say, the AE-1 will henceforth be relegated to the back burner until i decide to fix the light meter, or maybe never use it again.
