Adélie Penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae)
The Adélie Penguin is common along the entire coast of Antarctica, the only place they are found. Apsley Cherry-Garrard quotes in his book The Worst Journey In The World that they are "extraordinarily like children, these little people of the Antarctic world, either like children or like old men, full of their own importance". These penguins seem to have a strong curiosity that overrides their desire for self preservation.

Two adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) on an iceberg (Antarctica)
‘Years ago I made a special journey through the waters of Antarctica on board the Grigoriy Mikheev, a former Russian research ship. During one of the cruises with the rubber zodiac boats, we sailed to the opening of a bay that looked like a fairytale world: beautiful blue ice rocks everywhere. This photo – with the penguins small in the frame – clearly conveys my feelings about Antarctica: an infinitely large and magical world where you as a human being feel small and insignificant’.

We anchored outside a dense track of pack ice that can make it challenging to approach landfall at Tay Head.
Those fortunate enough to be scheduled for daily excursions…

Antarctica Day 6
Today we’d be heading into the Lemaire Channel which at its narrowest point is about 75 metres and full of icebergs. Mario woke us up over the PA at 7am and we stumbled up to the dining room for breakfast. Wonder if I can pay Mario to record me a personalised wake up alarm for my phone, he’s got such s soothing voice. As for breakfast, I’m definitely getting fatter on this cruise, they feed us a…

Normally I say "fuck that" when it comes to the Victorian people, but they had it right when they said nobody should know the truth about Adélie penguins
