Dick was a normal name in the 1950’s, but it’s 2022 now, so here’s how I immagine all of the batkids (+ some extras) reacting to Dick introducing himself.

BABS (10 years old)

Dick: My name’s dick

Babs: That’s a bad word.

Dick: No? It’s my name?

Babs: Daddy says it’s naughty to say bad words.

Dick: But it’s my name?

Babs: I’m gonna go ask daddy *runs up to commissioner Gordon* daddy, that kid says his name is Dick, can I say it when I’m talking about him?

Dick: *the son of immigrant parents, grown up speaking an amalgamation of Easter European dialects and was names after Dick Tracy still confused as to why his name is a bad word*

Jason

Dick: Hey buddy, I know this is all very new but my name is Dick and I—

Jason: hold up, hold up. Dick?

Dick: yeah, I know, I know but —

Jason: Damn and I thought my parents were assholes.

Tim

This little stalker already knew Dick’s entire biography, so there wasn’t a reaction, bless him.

Damian

He was brought up by assassins, also no particular reaction.

Steph

Dick: nice to meet you Stephanie, my name’s Dick.

Steph: you said Dick?

Dick: short for Richard, yes.

Steph: Nice. *nods*

Cass (Cass uses sign language because I said so)

Dick: *finger spells D I C K*

Cass: *there’s a sign for that*

Dick: yeah but we ain’t gonna use it, kiddo.

Wally (13 years old)

Dick: it’s so cool to meet other sidekicks! I’m Dick.

Wally: as in your name is Dick?

Dick: Yes *blushing because now he knows why everyone is reacting like it’s strange*

Wally: Ok from now on I’m gonna be the one to introduce you to anyone we meet, deal? Oh you’ll see man it’ll be so much fun *proceeds to list out all of the ways they could sneak dick jokes into conversations*

Roy

Wally: Roy, I have the pressure to introduce you to my Dick.

Roy: what the fuck do you mean now!?

Dick: *quadruple flips over Wally and lands in between them* ta-da!!!

Roy: who’s the kid?

Wally *placing an hand on Dick’s shoulder*: this, is my Dick

Roy: that’s your actual name?

Dick: it is.

Roy *looking between the other two*: ok I want in on your plans to introduce him to the others

Okay, but military whump. Military tropes in general. The POTENTIAL.

(❗️TW: Mentions of Torture, War, Oppression, Death – basically anything related to the shitty sides of militaries, power-abuse and warcrimes❗️)

Characters being captured by enemy forces and tortured for information until they either break or get rescued before they give out anything important.

(even better, if they don't have the information, but no one believes them 🥲)

Characters that are mistreated and abused in and by members of their own military. Maybe because they:

- do not agree with the way of their armed forces doing things (torturing enemies, repressing protests, committing warcrimes, etc.).

- have problems with authority and higher-ups that will be beaten and drilled out of them.

- are an outsider or part of a group that is strongly marginalised in the society the military forces are embedded in.

Characters being conditioned to never show any sign of pain, emotion or other 'weakness' to make them an effective and lethal fighter weapon.

Characters who are convinced pacifists being conscripts and suffering through grave emotional turmoil due to what is expected of them.

Dehumanising the enemy through language, propaganda and stereotypes.

Humanising the enemy by having to talk to one of them through a line of unfortunate circumstances (being imprisoned together, helping each other despite strict rules and surveillance, showing mercy on the battleground, etc.) or through anti-war-activism.

High-ranking characters that are dressed in ✨️fancy uniforms✨️

Power-dynamics and intrigues in the high ranks that have nothing to do with the cause and everything to do with elitism and gaining political influence.

Character A being higher-ranking than character B and using that power to bully them mercilessly (or to protect them, if you want it to be wholesome, though 😚).

Childhood friends being separated and seeing each other again on the battlefield – on opposite sides. :(

Old generals that have given up on the world, because they saw the cruelty and senselessnes of war vs. young, idealistic and possibly propaganda-brainwashed characters that see service in the military as the most honorable thing someone can do.

- breaking the view of those young idealists through the horrors of war.

- breaking the view of those old pessimists through good and selfless behaviour despite the horrors of war.

The "Well, well, well, what do we have here?" when characters are captured by enemy forces/caught spying and are taunted by their captors

(possibly combinated with forcing the captive to their knees)

(and grabbing their chin)

("Look at that, such a pretty face...")

(For the captive to defiantly spit in their captor's face or on their uniform)

(Only to be beaten violently)

(And to find themself with a boot on their chest/back/neck)

(You know what I'm getting at 👀).

Characters killing for the first time and breaking down completely.

Or characters killing for the first time and finding out that they enjoy it far more than they should.

Characters refusing to hurt/torture enemy characters, causing rank-internal drama and possibly putting the merciful character at great risk.

Veteran characters that struggle to find back into their "old life" after their service has ended.

Characters who grew up in a war-setting and know nothing but violence and danger.

etc.

There is just so much potential to explore your characters in depth, especially because it's such an extreme setting.

one of my favourite tropes has to be the one where the main character is about to do something dangerous and everyone else is against it, but the mc doesn't want to listen and turns to go on their own. but then, their significant other stops them, and when the main character is ready to tell them off too, the s/o just smirks and asks them if they want their help.

when I posted about sheldon no one interacted and now I post about dennis everyone interacts which I do not have a problem with but I would like to point out that for the following reasons, if you like dennis you should like sheldon too:

- both tall, with weirdly blue eyes, and brunette

- both have one dead parent, and had parents with a tumultuous marriage

- both have a twin sister who they believe to be below them

- both could be described as narcissistic

- both started off their respective series in their late 20s/early 30s, with a friend group consisting of 3-4 men and one blonde girl

- both believe themselves to be incredibly smart and better than everybody

- both are close friends with a man who was strongly hinted throughout most of the seasons to be gay

- both favoured by their mother over their twin sister

- both are best friends with their roommate

- neither usually care about anyone else’s wants or feelings

random modern barris hcs

- holding hands. all the time. everywhere. thomas needs the reassurance and also loves seeing old white ladies being shocked at them

- thomas always refers to richard as “my boyfriend, richard”, just to make sure everyone knows. for example:

thomas: i’m spending time with my boyfriend, richard this weekend

andy: oh my god thomas we all know who richard is. you’ve been dating for the past three years. we all get lunch together every friday.

thomas: jesus ok i was just making sure... anyway my boyfriend richard said

- if thomas gets upset about anything, richard sits down with him on the sofa and they cuddle while they watch pokémon or some disney movie... richard feels like he isn’t doing enough, but thomas can’t imagine anyone being nicer.

- richard likes to draw and write little poems. sometimes thomas writes little notes next to things in richard’s sketchbook (“cutest bird”, “is that me??? or a very handsome person that looks like me”, “why are you so good at writing cheesy shit”)

- they love to go walking around london together and doing photoshoots at pretty places they find

- when they’re apart, thomas sends richard pictures of books, scenery, items in stores- anything- and tell richard it made him think of him. richard loves nothing more.

- richard loves bringing thomas flowers, baking him cookies, writing him little notes- he feels thomas deserves all the little bits of softness richard can give him after all he’s had to go through in his life

- they’ve got tiny little matching tattoos, a sun and a moon, on their wrists. that way any time thomas looks at his wrists the first thing he thinks of is richard instead of his past.

- richard proposes to thomas in paris after five years of dating. thomas accepts of course, but not before calling richard a bastard for making him cry in public and hugging him crushingly tightly, his face buried in his collar.
