Thinking about Ad-Free, Tipping, or Blaze, but nervous about online payment security? Have no fear—your data is safe, secure, and private. So private, in fact, no one at Tumblr will ever see it.

What motivates the pricing to go ad-free? Are you planning to add any other perks or is it only ever going to be for ads?
Hi @nualie! Thanks for writing in, that’s a really good question.
The decision to go ad-free was motivated by user's requests since, well, since we’ve had ads on Tumblr; but also by monetary considerations. We want to keep Tumblr going, and keeping Tumblr going costs money. Ads bring in revenue, but many folks don’t like ads (we get it, we don’t always love them ourselves). So we wanted to offer you something that enables you to get rid of ads and help us keep this hellsite we all love going.
The price point accounts for a couple of factors:
The cost of operating Tumblr and its precisely many, many, many blogs.
The loss in revenue on ads that Ad-Free users won’t see.
The premium we need to develop and release improvements to the feature.
We have some additional perks in our sights, but they’re not on our immediate roadmap because we’re also always working on necessary improvements for all users, paying or otherwise :)

I think I might have seen someone bring this up before, but since I've seen that @staff seem to be listening to us lately, I seriously think tumblr should just allow us to donate to its upkeep like Wikipedia and AO3. (I understand wikipedia and AO3 are non-profits and tumblr, well, isn't- but hear me out.)
This would allow users who want to support the site (but maybe can't afford a monthly or yearly subscription) to donate what they can/want to, and also this way tumblr wouldn't be at the mercy of brands who might want to request changes under threat of pulling funding. (And we all know how the users here react when brands try to tell us what to do...)
AO3 is holding a donation drive right now with a goal of $40,000. Yesterday when I first saw this going on they had already raised around $26000. I just checked in again as I'm writing this post and they have already raised $143,991, meaning they have already surpassed their goal by nearly $104,000, and there's still two days left in the three day long drive. And this is not unusual for their donation drives.
In 2021 their Oct. drive surpassed their $40k goal by over $155,000 and the Apr. drive surpassed their $50k goal by over $214,000.
In 2020 Apr. drive surpassed their $130K goal by over $328,000 (Oct. did not seem to have a monetary goal)
In 2019 their Oct. drive exceeded their $130K goal by over $117,000 and the Apr. drive exceeded their $130K goal by over $115,000.
I could go on, but I think three years worth of drives is probably enough.
Now I'm not saying that tumblr would immediately have the same overwhelming success as AO3, and I'm not going to pretend like I know how much it costs to run tumblr compared to AO3, or the different complexities that come with funding a for-profit site vs a non-profit, but I am saying that its users care enough about this site that (those able) would be willing to pitch in if just asked and given the ability to do so on a 'give what you want' basis, especially if we knew it meant that brands wouldn't be encroaching in our communities and telling tumblr what to do/pretending they're our friends. Double especially if we knew it would fund things we've been asking for, like ridding the porn/spam bot problem.
I feel like this can even be rolled out in baby steps, like maybe don't immediately get rid of the "ad free subscription" until you see how the first round goes. Then, if it happens to go spectacularly well (like it usually does with AO3,) kick the brands out the door and stick with it. Or, more likely, convert the "ad free subscription" to this model.
To pull example from AO3: Biannually run a donation drive with a goal to meet, and users who donate $X or more get the perk of no ads on tumblr, and anyone who doesn't mind a few ads here or there are free to donate less to keep the lights on/the knowledge that tumblr won't be held in a chokehold by brands (and maybe also a little top hat for their icon or something as a perk lol).
I feel like most, if not all, tumblr users would agree that this would be preferable to tumblr falling into line with all the other social medias that thrive on influencer/brand culture, shitty algorithms, and sponsored posts to make their money, seeing as the appeal of this hellsite is that tumblr doesn't have those shitty algorithms or influencer culture.
Like, I'm not gonna get my hopes up that tumblr would actually run with this, and I understand that perhaps maybe there are legitimate reasons why they couldn't, but I still think many users would prefer this method of funding the site costs and staff if it meant saying fuck off to brands.

Just bought myself a year of ad-free browsing for Tumblr because I believe in supporting the perilously few platforms that don't sell my personal data to make a buck.
If you can afford to buy the ad-free service (and of course "can afford" means different things to different people) I hope you'll consider doing the same. Tumblr currently costs more to maintain than it makes, precisely because it does not monetize its users personal data. If that doesn't eventually change, Tumblr WILL be forced to either shut down or join Facebook, Twitter, Google and the rest of the corporate capitalist platforms that turn a profit by selling the personal ad profiles they compile on every single user by analyzing every single word you type on their sites.
I personally hope that doesn't happen. So I'm doing my part.
If you can't afford ad-free browsing, please consider adding Tumblr to your ad-blocker's whitelist so you can still support Tumblr by viewing the ads. It's just one small way to help make sure that the internet of the future includes platforms that don't commodity you as a user.

Why the new blog?
I realized my old blog was doomed when I just assumed Tumblr Live has failed miserably. But, no. My account had all forms of communication stripped from it.
Not the first time I've had an issue. And, it means I gave up ad-free browsing. Which, since I feel like I missed out on sword lady, I'm OK with.
But, it's kinda bullshit that my blog from 2007 was flagged as spam in 2023. Now that I have this new account, I can see that my old blog was also un-searchable. Not blurred and unsearchable, just unsearchable.
I also paid to blaze a couple posts right after leaving Twitter as my main social media outlet--to support the lovely Automatic and their platform which has a big place in my heart.
That's actually where the issues started. That singular shirtless photo of me on here was denied to be blazed. Fine. I honestly didn't realize there was a visible bulge. My B.
But, if you blaze on iOS, you're at both Tumblr and Apple's mercy for the refund.
Tumblr has been ignoring requests for updates on where my 20 bucks went and why my request for a refund was denied.
Because I know for a fact if you annoy Tumblr support they can sometimes delete your blog without warning, a fresh start seemed for the best.
Did I spend money boosting an app that then turned around and sucker-punched me? Yeah. But, I'd do it again. This is the only place online where I like more people I stumble upon than hate.
But that's on us, not Automatic.

I went ahead and bought ad-free browsing because I can and I want to encourage tumblr to try to make money with stuff like this and not dumb stuff like NFTs or whatever.
S’ nice. I recommend if you’re interested.

Annoying ads can disrupt your browsing experience and drain your mobile data. Thankfully, there are ad blocker apps available for Android that can help you regain control over your online activities. Whether your Android device is rooted or non-rooted, here is a list of the best ad blocker apps to suit your needs. These apps and thoughtsoncloud can be useful for exploring your Android experience.
Annoying ads have become a ubiquitous aspect of modern digital and traditional media landscapes. These advertisements, designed to capture consumers' attention and promote products or services, often elicit mixed reactions from the audience. While some ads manage to strike the right balance and effectively convey their message without causing irritation, others fall into the category of being perceived as bothersome or intrusive.
One common form of annoying ads (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advertising) is the use of pop-ups, which interrupt users' browsing experiences and can be challenging to dismiss. These pop-ups may range from simple banners to full-screen overlays, leading to frustration for many users who feel they are forced to engage with content they did not seek.
Moreover, the repetition of ads can contribute to annoyance. When individuals repeatedly encounter the same advertisement across different platforms, it can create a sense of overexposure, leading to a negative perception of the product or brand being promoted.
