Just wanted to ask, please forgive me if you've already answred this, what program do you use? Your art fucks HARD and like. I was looking at your art of the two moths over the city they die in and I was hit with the wave of "oh that looks really fucking fun actually." Like i know my art program can't do some of those effects and like, I'd love to try fucking about with them.
hi there, thank you! all my art is done in procreate and paint tool sai
because you mentioned that drawing in particular i thought it would be fun to break it down and show ppl what exactly went into each part of it so check this out
Tumblr media
sketch & lineart - the brushes come from georgbrush.club and the urban sketcher is my most commonly used lineart brush, it has a nice irregular shape. the square brush is nice for big blocky sketches.
the cityscape was REALLY hard but basically I got a photo of the skyline of florence, traced some basic building shapes, then bullshitted the rest using the vertical symmetry/mirror tool to cut down on the amount of work (so i only had to sketch one half of the city). then for lineart I turned off vertical symmetry, turned on the two-point perspective tool, and got this:
Tumblr media
the rose windows were made using the radial symmetry tool.
I didn't like it being so flat, so I used the liquify tool to make a kind of fish-eye effect (limited success tbh). I liked how it looked but the buildings in front needed something to cover them up to make the liquification less obvious...
Tumblr media
first pass colours. I felt they were very washed out, aside from the sun which i loved. I use the spectra brush (default procreate) for skyscapes a lot, I love the texture. Although the clouds were filled in using the lasso selection tool, I softened the edges using the square pencil again and added texture using true grit sampler grainy brushes. The translucency effect comes from my setting the brush as an eraser. The sun rays come from the radial symmetry tool.
Blocking in the moths' colours was done with the urban sketcher again.
Tumblr media
Something people may not have noticed is the labyrinth hidden in the sky! yeah I had a bunch of versions where it was more obvious but I found that it clashed a bit and was too busy, so I made it subtle. But yes. I searched for "royalty free labyrinth" and picked one.
The toner grit brush is one you've seen before if you've looked at any art on tumblr lately (this is such a popular brush) and it's from the true grit fast grit set. The pointillism brush is from the true grit free sampler pack, like my grain brushes.
I added shadows to the moths, increased saturation overall, and changed the clouds to a translucent blue (you can even see in the sun where I forgot to block in the sun itself because the clouds over it used to be opaque lol). Moon rays were drawn using the radial symmetry tool but this time with rotational symmetry off. I also moved the moon down closer to the moths because I felt that it was a bit far away, and this served to visually divide the drawing into three equal parts, so I chose to lean into that and divide the sky colours too, to show passing time, or an endless moment - morning, evening, night, etc.
And then the oroborous, I tried a few different effects on it because I wanted it to be very clearly separate from the main scene - I settled on a dot matrix newsprint texture, using procreate's onboard tool, and some heavy chromatic aberration. This is because the oroborous isn't real, it's purely symbolic and the moths' demise started when they became photographers so I liked the print media aspect there as well. The story itself is about grief without closure, cyclical violence, and sunk cost fallacy, while everyone explores an endless labyrinth, so an oroborous fits I think
what makes art fun to me is thinking up ways I can tell a story using just a single image. and sure a lot of it will be lost to an audience who isn't familiar with the characters or backstory but i want to leave enough in there that even complete strangers to my work will be able to construct a narrative about what's happening here, rather than it just being a cool image. that's my goal.
Finally I exported it to sai on my pc to give it a once-over. this is really important because the retina display on an ipad is oversaturated on purpose, to make everything look amazing and vibrant. but what this means is that on other screens, your work might look washed out. it's especially bad at displaying yellows! so i look at it in sai on my pc and i make minor adjustments, in this case I actually added another multiply layer on the moths and an overlay on their non-shadowed parts to increase the contrast there.
finally if you've read this far, I played a little trick with the caption of the drawing. yeah, THEY die... but only one of those moths is a theythem pronoun haver... the other has to survive. he isn't given a choice in the matter.

Hey @five-rivers, happy truce! I decided to go with your prompt about danny attending a cultural ritual or event, and themed it around the far frozen. My explanation for it got a little longwinded so I've included it under a read more, along with a little extra art!
(tumblr’s probably gonna crunch all of these up a bit, so click for better quality)
I'll be honest, I haven't actually thought out the exact details of what this event would be, just the broad strokes - I tend to gravitate towards food as a source of celebration in my own worldbuilding, and I guess that bled through here as well in the form of “ice = water = probable fish based diet = important fish event?”
During drafting I couldn’t really decide between “event centred around observing fish migration and/or other seasonal habits” or “Danny being invited to come fishing with Frostbite and the other yeti”, but honestly I think either of those would probably fit. Originally I had planned to have one or two yeti characters swimming around with him to make the piece more dynamic, but a surprise attack from a migraine kind of cut into my plans a bit and I decided to downsize.
...at least until I got annoyed by the lack of a visible ghost friend in the piece and decided to paint a “small” “”extra”” “””doodle””” which rapidly turned into a whole other Thing,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are shockingly few ghost fish in the show, apparently, or at least I could neither remember nor find images online of any examples, so I just kind of winged it. Their design is partially inspired by a short story you wrote a while back, although I ended up drifting away from the zebrafish motif as I was drafting them. I started thinking of them as maskfish as a stand-in name, and then promptly forgot to think of a better one, so. Maskfish it is. Here's some random notes I made while conceptualising them, because I constantly have specbio on the brain and couldn't not think about it
Maskfish flesh turns an opaque pale colour when cooked, and remains translucent when raw
Their eyes are covered in a clear, hard exterior, and can be hollowed out and sterilised for use in various crafts; along similar lines I could also see their bones being used to make glues, paints, and other such resources.
Their cores are located at the top of the spinal cord, in the head; their mouths are located on the underside, beneath the "mask", which makes up the entire top part of the head, and is a singular piece of a shell-like material.
Though they aren't particularly agressive hunters, they also aren't picky about their food, and will generally eat anything smaller than themselves.
Aaand finally, here's a bunch of isolated scans, since procreate ate a lot of the fine details in the collaging process.

Hi Riikka, I stumbled across your art recently and am just blown away. It's absolutely gorgeous! *0* I am pretty new to digital art and was wondering what procreate brushes/settings/textures you use, especially for sketching (but also for painting)? I tried searching around your blog/links to see if you've answered this before and couldn't find anything so I apologize if this is a repeat question. ^^;
Hello hello! I'm so glad you enjoy my artwork so much! Thank you so much for your kind words - I try my best to level up and draw cooler every day haha Now about my brushes: I mostly draw in Paint Tool SAI 2 actually (I currently only use Procreate for simple sketches), and I've been meaning to make my SAI 2 brushes available for purchase for some months now since you are not the first person to ask me this. I mostly use textured, bristled, and round brushes, often with a custom brush shape. Nothing super "fancy", just a few versatile and functional brushes. But this is still a work in process since collecting and organizing my rather messy brushes into a nice brush set takes time, plus I also tend to change my brush settings a lot depending on what I need. So I've been creating and saving the brushes as I work (plus I've been rather busy with freelance work as well).
I also use the same brushes for sketching and rendering, because the way I render nowadays is more like drawing than painting. At least that's how it feels to me. I just change the brush settings (opacity, size, tip tapering, texture intensity, etc).
But I will post about this when the set is finally ready! But I also sketch in Procreate, and lately, I've been mostly using:
B Rough - as my main sketching pencil - from this free set: https://ghkim0045.gumroad.com/l/FREE_PencilSet
JF Grungy dilute ink Wash - I use this to fill in light gray values - https://jasonheeley.gumroad.com/l/keasb?layout=profile
I have also been experimenting a bit with this "PSKI" set, mainly using "PSKI pencil large rough" (a nice hard/soft edge brush): https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0vkcsrnf4wvtal5/AAAlVQYZGP4ZGHNMQ6kZwCTta?dl=0
I have also used the standard Procreate sketching brushes a lot, such as the 6B pencil (my favorite). I often like to amp up the texture intensity of my brushes though.
I have also used a brush called "DizzyTara's Oval Sketch 2" for sketching, but I've altered this brush a bit to fit my own taste (more texture and bigger max brush size). It's basically a pretty "basic" and textured oval brush, but often brushes like this are the best and most versatile tbh!
Other settings: In Procreate, I've also adjusted my pen pressure curve to be more sensitive so that I don't need to press so hard - this will save your hand and wrist as well!

Hey! I love your art so much and was wondering what brushes and/or art programs you use, I'm an artist myself and am just genuinely curious. Sorry if this is a strange ask or anything... I don't use or get on Tumblr too often. Thanks for reading this ask and have a good day/night. (This is my first ask to anyone I think)
hey!!! i use Paint Tool SAI 2!
as of the moment (which means i constantly change it) here is my main doodling/sketching/lineart brush:
Tumblr media
my coloring brush: any hard edged basic brush will do, you can also use the bucket tool or the lasso tool, it's simply for coloring
Tumblr media
my blushing brush: i blend this brush out by switching to transparency (making it an eraser) and lightly tapping the outside of the paint! (sai users, do this by pressing C on your keyboard. lifesaver been using this shortcut for years) it's versatile, i love using it for gradients
Tumblr media
marker brush (usually for ecto): i use this brush only when i want to paint ecto (which i don't do often) but you can use this for other purposes too! it's not my favorite, not even good enough for ecto imo, because my sai 1 version is much better i blend things out the EXACT SAME WAY as the blush brush so please keep that in mind!
Tumblr media
a basic brush im testing out for shading purposes: it has a little bit of texture and is made for baaasically cel shading but slightly softer and has the tiniest bit of color mixing
Tumblr media
blending brush i barely use and don't actually really like that much: i'm still testing out blending brushes that i like because i can't find one that i like that isn't just blurring colors together or making them muddy when mixed together. if anybody has suggestions, PLEASE let me know! anything like a procreate or csp blending brush that can be recreated would be great
Tumblr media
and finally, my rendering brush: it's basically a basic hard edged brush that can pick up the smallest bit of color i use it to clean up and add final touches by using the drop picker often and over the entire artwork
Tumblr media
ofc, change anything to your preferences. that's how it goes these are just the settings that work for me :) this also goes for the program LOL i know sai is not for everyone (but it's my baby my bestie my 5ever so like this is about ME)
i have an in-depth post about my CSP brushes and how i work with them (and i don't really ever use csp unless it's a big piece so it's not changing anytime soon) if that's what you have or prefer
my #ref tag is also a treasure trove of my old settings over the years if you'd like to see those too

What brushes do u use in procreate?
This is actually a hard question to answer 💀😂 I use a lot of brushes 👀 Depends on how I want my drawing to look like. Sometimes I’m going for more of a smooth, noticeable lineart style. Other times it can be more painterly. I also like to experiment a lot. I will put all the brushes I have used for sure several times 😊 I hope it helps 😊
These are my main ones for sure. Some of them downloaded in Spanish fsr??? But I translated them 😊 the brushes on the left are for the more cartoony, lineart style. The other ones I use for painting 😊 (Though I sometimes mix them up a bit)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Left) I use anything in the watercolor section :) (right) This is a nice set of vegetation brushes called “Flora” I found here. I have used them several times and they are pretty nice and helpful 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Little side note: The ones that have numbers on them (like 1 1, 2, etc) are just duplicates of the originals so I could save them in a separate, personal brush set. Very few of them have been slightly altered by me but the changes are barely noticeable. The one I’ve changed the most is the HB Pencil. That’s the one I use for lineart and sketching.
I hope this is helpful! 🐸✨

That last piece aaaaaaaah beautiful and sweet, really captures how Lav feels about Randy :D
Also I love how you colour and shade everything, how do you do it? Do you think you could record a speed paint or something? What brushes do you use? Canvas size? How do you painstakingly colour within the lines? What device do you use?
Sorry for so many questions in one ask, I’m really curious lol. Hope you can answer these! No rush :3
First off, thank you so much!
I use Procreate on iPad, which has a handy-dandy little feature where it automatically records everything you do on a canvas, and you can create a time lapse of it. So, yes, I can give a speed paint. :3
(Yes I painted this specifically for this ask.) For comics (and this painting sample), I use a canvas that's 1813X2263. For doodle dumps and other less dedicated projects, I use a 1955X2357 canvas, rotating as I want or need to. If I have a bigger project I want to do, I start with Procreates "Square" canvas default (2048X2048) and crop as I need to as I work.
I've been sticking to this Jingsketch brush set for a while now, though I've modified some to make them more comfortable. As of now the set is free to download. (There appears to be a larger Jingsketch set that costs about $15--I may get that someday lol)
Tumblr media
For smudging of shadows and markings, I use the Jingsketch "Jittery Smudge".
Alright, prepare for a thorough rundown of the time lapse. X3
As for how I color, the video shows my two most used methods. I do the Momo method when I want it to look a little neater or smoother, and the Midas method for when I don't care how unpolished it looks and just want to show a colored image.
For flats (the solid red seen in the video) I do it on a layer under the lines. I usually put all the flats on one layer, but this time I did their flats on separate layers for demonstration purposes, and merged them once they were both filled.
For Momo, I colored by drawing just inside the lines, erasing what went outside. Then used a Freehand (or equivalent) selection tool to fill in the inside. This is the more time consuming but smooth of the two methods, in my opinion.
For Midas, I specifically drew the outer lines thicker so that I could use the "automatic" (I guess that's "wand" in other programs? I'm not sure) selection to do a quick fill. This method will usually leave the colors with a hard, semi-unappealing edge. (Feathering the selection a little or smudging the flats can probably help with that, but I don't do that very often.)
Tumblr media
What I do is select the OUTSIDE of the lines, expand the "Selection Threshold" so that it barely selects JUST outside the lines, then invert the selection so that it filles everything INSIDE the lines. With this method you need to be careful to get all the negative zones as well--I didn't think about demonstrating that in this painting, so here a mini-tut on that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the actual colors, I usually do each color on a separate layer set as a "Clipping Mask" to the flats layer. Eyes usually get a layer of their own--The iris colors and pupil (if present) get the Clipping Mask treatment until I'm satisfied with them and merge them into one eye layer.
For shading, I'll fill an entire layer, still Clipped to the flats, with my color of choice, usually set it to the Multiply blend mode, and adjust the opacity as I want. I usually shade the main body separately from the eyes, but try to match the blend mode and opacity settings.
For more high-effort projects, I'll fill a layer with a solid color under the shadow layer but above all the other colors so that I have a better idea of the shapes. Colors like on Midas here can really badly mess with the perception of the shapes and shadow locations. I may also add more Multiply layers if necessary.
And that's my lengthy and extensive look into how I paint~ Keep in mind this is MY process, and I admit I work in a rather quick, dirty, and even somewhat lazy way. So take what you will from this, and go arting as YOU please! ^w^

1hr 40m on Procreate
The inherent sexual tension of holding your tentative frenemy’s one weakness in your hand
HI IM ACTUALLY SO HAPPY WITH THIS— I struggled with painting the lighting but I have trouble rendering faces with hard brushes at the best of times anyway, but I got to a point I’m happy with and it is like. SO CLOSE to what I had in my mind’s eye AHSHDHDH :’3 im also very proud because I didn’t use just a single ref pic for it so I’m glad that I’m getting better at realism from multiple refs!
(Reblogs are super appreciated 🙏)

Luna Jacobs
[ DO NOT REPOST, ALL ART & CONCEPTS WERE MADE BY ME ]
Name: Luna Jacobs Age: ??? (Late 20’s Early 30’s) Ethnicity: Chinese American Species: Human . . . Language(s): English, Chinese, Mandarin, Spanish (Learning) Occupation: Private Investigator, Detective, Head Mechanic for Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza
About: Luna was the first to actually start my horror game obsession. There are four fandoms that have always been my go-to when I’ve run out of content for anything else, and FNaF’s is one of them. Her story was always gruesome, but I’ve been able to change it so it actually makes sense within the FNaF’s timeline, while also holding true to my old vision.
Luna is rough around the edges but never misses a beat to be kind. Strange to hear but it’s true. She has a deep respect for hard working people, as she herself works to keep up with the changing times. “If the job wasn’t done well the first time, why the heck do I have to fix it?”; She has the mentality that everyone’s business is their own, but if you drag her into your business she’ll do what she can to help. No promises though. She really is trying, but relationships are hard. What she remembers from her childhood is rough no matter how fuzzy it gets. She just wants to get things done so she can move on and hopefully find something better along the way.
Fandom: Five Nights at Freddy’s [ Scott Cawthon ] Fanfic Title: “ Five Nights Before Dawn ” Program: Procreate Painting Time: 5hrs 15m
[ This is a FNaF AU, in no way is this canon to the OG storyline. ]

Process of my HEX Gift
I finally remembered to take a few screenshots of my progress stages and I always wanted to do a walkthrough post so here we are!!
I did not have a specific prompt from my giftee, except for the ship which was Silrah so I decided I wanted to draw a cozy romantic Christmas scene.
Which totally showed in my first sketch...definitely... My first sketches mostly look unrecognizable and there is no real system for them because it's just lines for my brain to visualize where I want everything to be. Sometimes they look like this, sometimes they are more light/shadow inclusive. The next step was to work out the poses for Farah and Saul and as you can see, I was struggling. 🤣
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I finally found the pose I was looking for and fleshed out some elements in the background it was time for one of my absolute favorite parts.....that I forgot to screenshot....THE VALUES Which is me trying to figure out the lighting by blocking in light and dark areas with various shades of grey. But because I forgot to take a screenshot (and the value layer that I normally keep until the end for reference disappeared into the void of procreate) we will skip straight to the colour! I very roughly block in the areas with the colours I have in mind to see if everything fits and change what I don't like yet. When that is done I now have a finished concept which I need to refine and then paint!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And now I reached the point of actual background design which was HARD. I looked at many pics of Farah's headmistress' office to try and get a feel for what items might be in her private suite. The mantle of the fireplace looked very empty even after I added the little astrology magic thing and the flowers so I decided to add a circle just like the ones in her office as @septemberrie deducted. I also played around with the design of the fire guard because I wanted it to have that elegant whimsical fairy vibe. I added a lamp inspired by one from Sims 4 and a book in the foreground to hide the awkward angle they are sitting at. For the frame on the wall, I wanted a moon-themed design but it took me a while to figure it out, which is why I left the frame empty for now. Then it was time for lineart and actually sketching in the elements I wanted to be in the background. I usually set my colour or value layer and the sketch layer to 20% and draw over it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You might also notice that the wrapped sword disappeared...which I regret to this day because I simply forgot to paint it into the rough lineart and only remembered when Skye asked what's supposed to be in the remaining present. Maybe I will add it at some point because now Saul has no present...except for Farah. But the square box present was meant to be Saul's present to Farah and originally I wanted a jewelry box but it was too small to see so I just....put a bigger box. Creativity *sparkles*
Another thing is that from the rough line-art to the nice line-art (yes I always draw my line-art two or three times.....even though line-art is my least favorite stage probably) the Christmas tree is losing a lot of ornaments. Originally I wanted to put in way more stuff like small straw stars or figurines but after painting a million tiny branches I started regretting every life decision that brought me to this point so I simplified the tree. A lot. In the end, I don't regret that because I think it fits them even better. Silrah don't strike me as people who go all out on Christmas and rather just decorate small and tastefully (given they would even celebrate because Otherworld= different culture, but we ignore that piece of worldbuilding for this Christmas-themed drawing)
Next I block in every area on a separate layer so I can alpha-lock them for the painting process. At this point I was getting too annoyed with the tree because painting it was a pain in the ass so I started shading and painting in textures and finishing everything else before even continuing to block in the tree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The whole image was still too cold at this point so I went in with one of my favorite parts: atmosphere and then lighting bringing it all together and making the painting shine! Painting light is so much fun and I definitely want to learn more about lighting and structure to get better at it but I really love it when someone compliments the light in my art!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also finally added the title of the book in the front. I wanted it to be something about magic that Farah would read and looked at various old book covers with pretty lettering. I decided on "The Story of Magic" because I found a very pretty-looking reference cover with exactly the letters that I needed to spell.
And then....something was still missing......THE TREE. (I didn't take a progress picture at that stage that's why it's already in the pics up there but in the end I still had to draw the light on the branches and after doing about four or five of them I decided the effort was not worth the result and did the light reflection very very roughly. But I don't think anyone except me really notices.
And tada the finished Christmas drawing!

Six sketch sunday
Thanks so much for tagging me @thewholelemon
I actually have something pretty exciting to share if i do say so myself!
In november 2022 i did a master study of romeo and juliet by frank bernard dicksee. I was very happy with it. But over time I’ve become less and less happy with it, specifically how baz looks :((
This is due to the fact that i traced A LOT in late 2022 (I was 15 ok, I’m sure we’ve all had one of those phases😭) I traced the whole painting, but baz was hard bc the original painting featured a woman, and her whole figure was covered by a white loose dress. 2022 me did their best interpreting the shapes and forming a new body for baz, but honestly they didn’t do it very well. Ive hated Baz’s face and body for a while now, but still loved simon and the painting in general. Which is why I came to the conclusion that for me to be at peace and happy with it again, I have to remaster it!
And again I’ve had this on my mind for a while now, mulling it over, because it’s quite a big project. But 7 days ago i finalized my decision and started looking at references and whatnot. It took me so long to find references bc I was confused of the angle of Juliet’s head in the original painting (so I’ve changed the angle whoops) and i needed to make sense of it all. Before i knew it i had spent 5 hours (according to procreates tracker) drawing, and literally nothing had changed.. but then i spent like 2 hours more and THAT did it. It was like digging a whole in the ground searching for water. You dig a little and nothing happens, and when you finally dig deep enough the water reveals itself like a goldmine.
Anyways, i haven’t gotten around to do any recoloring yet, so ill show you the sketch (ahem, traced) of my 2022 version versus what I have now
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one on the left is the 2022 version. The one on the right is the current sketch.
I’m trying to incorporate a lot more body language from baz this time around. I think the old sketch of baz was very rigid. His torso is very short 💀 my biggest issue was his face though. It was far too feminine. The bone structure wasn’t exactly giving baz, in fact the whole face didn’t look like baz to me. The expression also bothered me, it was too superficial. Like it’s exactly the predictable expression you expect him to have. I tried to spice it up in the new version by making him appear a bit more anguished. It’s romeo and juliet after all.
Im currently looking at references to what clothes he should be wearing (don’t worry, i wont cover up his sleeves. Even if it’s more time period accurate) so if y’all have any inspo or suggestions, feel free to share them with me!
While baz is the inly thing getting completely redone, I’m also touching up some other thins. Just giving it a more refined, finished look overall. The plants in the original were really messily done, so i’m gonna work a lot on those. 2022 me also slacked on the curtains, so I’m repainting those to match the original frank bernard painting.
Once I’m done with it all i think i might sell some prints. Ive gotten requests to sell prints of this one before, but never really got around to do more than research. If i do make prints, I’m a bit worried they’ll all go to waste bc they’ll have to be shipped from denmark, and shipping in expensive :(( (I’ve tried to set up middlemen and it didn’t work for me. Red bubble wont even allow me to add a credit card😬) but if y’all are still interested in prints, do let me know! Ill definitely put in more of an effort to make it happen if i know it wont be in vain :))
Thats all from me for today :3 see ya next time
(Also check out what my COBB partner @thewholelemon is doing! It’s gonna be so good!)
Tags! @monbons @raenestee @j-nipper-95 @orange-peony
Id love to see what y’all are doing!

u guys wanna see more WIPs... similar to the last post, here are Some WIPs
all of these were started in sai before going on to procreate. before going back to sai again in the case of the strength card
so Blue Sky/Out Of Time... yeah it’s extremely self-explanatory, it’s very obvious what this scene depicts and i’m sure everyone gets it (this is a joke i’ve had multiple people dm me asking wtf this even is). the one element that absolutely NEEDED to be there was the LED digital clock with a bullshit time on it, and i decided to replace it with an AIRE warning sign instead and put the LED readouts in the bg. the warning sign in this setting serves the purpose of informing ppl when there are hostile faeries around. i knew what the colours would be from the beginning, but it took a bit for me to realise what sort of shading style i wanted (it took forever). but i did know i wanted to contrast the very sketchy black void against the cleaner and almost cartoony/comic book style rest of the drawing, to emphasise the fact that the foreground sky and background void are made of two very different things. again i used a colour shifting brush to quickly make all the shards of sky different colours, but originally i planned to have some of the shards be dark or night time (with stars or the moon etc). unfortunately it didn’t work, it was too dark and pascal got lost against it.
My Eyes Are Up Here is pretty obviously the exact same scene with the same character, in the same field, but with a different sort of atmosphere. i sketched this in sai then did the final in procreate. originally it was going to have a black background

i really like this version tbh but the blue works better. i think he looks good against dark backgrounds where it’s kind of hard to see wtf is even happening there
so about the neon signs..... i’m well aware that the sketch has way more promise than what the final ultimately was, and that’s because i found that i didn’t have the technical or artistic ability to pull off the complex neon signs like i wanted to. i couldn’t get it looking good enough so i had to scrap them. but these signs will be back, i want to draw them properly and do them justice. the gif was unplanned too but i thought it would be fun to have the flicker be very intermittent so that if you scrolled past it you might not even realise, or you’d have to stick with it just to catch it looping. i used GIMP to make the gif and change the frame rate, and this actually took a very long time because i had to preview it over and over. anyway if you WERE to get lost in the púca’s field, in this story, you would see neon signs like this encouraging you to follow them.
Strength is actually the last drawing i ever made that ended with a paint-over in sai, and the oldest drawing here. as such i actually don’t think it’s representative of my current ability but i do have a soft spot for it for sentimental reasons lol. the reason for the paint-over in sai was because i drew this at a time when i still did not trust procreate to be able to place the level of finish on it that i wanted
the background took me a thousand years to figure out. literally it was so annoying that i considered scrapping it for something simpler. but the idea was for it to be a kind of fairytale-ish lost in the woods sort of look while also appearing like the blood vessels around the human heart. the branches were also supposed to be heart-shaped in cross-section but i spent so long zoomed in painting them that i forgot to zoom out to see if all those fine details were actually visible, and it turned out they weren’t. i was disappointed that i couldn’t get félix’s tattoos to look right but that’s what i get for making a character with shit tons of both tattoos and body hair. i also got rid of the foreground branches really soon because they weren’t adding anything and muddied up the readability of his pose
the swan is from a daemon au and bears no relation to my other swan characters. i just like swans a lot

Trailing the man whom you’d mentally named “tall bastard” had been less hard than you’d initially thought it would be
Sure, you had to be quiet and crouch to avoid his gaze
But on the bright side you were a lot harder to catch view of despite your clothes
Perhaps it was cause your smaller than Leon
Or cause you’d spent nights perfecting sneaking to the kitchen for some snacks when your not supposed to
Either way you end up following him with relative ease
The only problem though is that…well he just HAD to go through the village
A village now once again populated by angry villagers whom you just barely got past
To top that off he decides he needs to lock the gate behind him leading to you having to climb over the gate with some parkour skills you didn’t have
The one Damn thing dad never taught you
“Just for all that alone he’d better sleep with an eye open…wait do they even need sleep?”
There’s so much about this stupid parasite bullshit that you don’t know what to question about it anymore
Like do they still eat?, go to the washroom?, can they procreate??
Bleh, the last one makes you shiver
“Maybe it’s just best I don’t think about it too much.”
At some point you lose the tall bastard but from what you remember of the map on merchants wall there isn’t much up ahead
Just a factory and some sort of quarry/valley
There wasn’t many places they could’ve taken him
You first check the large house that is actually…surpassingly nice?
The front was locked but after going around back and avoid some bear traps you made it inside
And for once it didn’t seem depilated and abandoned
It was well furnished with photos hung on the walls, hardwood tables and cushioned chairs, a small chandelier, animal heads put up on plaques and even had a washroom
Albeit it’s more like a port a potty type toilet but it certainly is due-able
On a table is some old photographs
Their yellowed and grainy but you can make out the clear and distinct story of this place
How it was once peaceful
A tucked away village with few troubles except for survival
A simple time
Yet, it does not last
A man cloaked in purple with a staff emerging with an entourage of cloaked figures behind him
He converted them
And that had now lead to this
It leaves a bad taste in your mouth so you move on
Solving a simple puzzle to unlock a closet after looking at some weird bible passage
There was a marble inside, one with air bubbles
You moved it around when staring at it
Then noticing how it seemed intentional
Wait…upstairs
You go up and to the door of a locked room
Fitting the marble into a round slot and moving it around for about a minute until it formed the signia of the cult
Oddly enough the symbol seemed familiar now looking closer at it
The door cracks open and you look around
Once again it’s nicer than all the other places you’d seen
Hell, the bed looked so temptingly comfy your body practically begged for you to lie down
You don’t though
You can’t
On the wall hangs the familiar purpled robed figure from the photos
His face slightly obscured yet even with that you can see his smirk
Seeing it whipped off his face would be satisfying but you decide not to swing at the painting
You move to a painting on the wall next, it’s slightly tilted letting you see a lever behind it
You mentally note that for later
Exiting the home after placing back the marble you go through the back once more
You didn’t want to leave much evidence of you being there
But it was good that you knew that weirdly inconvenient puzzle beforehand
On your path you cut a stray tripwire bomb
Find another jewel in one of those weird hanging lantern things
And took out a few more villagers as you moved through a Dilapidated factory
Collecting a sapphire and some more supplies before ending up at the gate which remains locked from the other side
You end up peaking your head through a small hole in the wall, rebar jutting out the concrete as you see Merchant set up a small shop
He waves and so do you with a smile before you see a nearby door open
“Leon!”
The sandy blond snaps his head towards you and runs to where you peaked out the wall
It was too small to crawl through but you could get an arm through it
It reaches through and he clasps it
“You alright?”
“Yeah, I’m good. I cleared out the rest of the way back, I can’t open the gate from this side through
You see him shift his gaze to somewhere else
“There’s something missing here. I think I’ll have to find it”
“Alright”
“Stay safe- oh I found this as well”
He pulls out a familiar bag that makes your eyes widen
“That’s my moms!”
You can recognize it anywhere, her old leather bag with several small pouches and clasps
It was much bigger than your own bag, plus it seemed to have some spare supplies
“Careful, I’ll throw it over”
“Ok!”
He does as he says and you catch it
You shed a tear once you have it in your arms
Hugging it tightly to your chest as you can very faintly still smell the lingering vanilla of her old perfume
You miss it so much
“I’ll be back”
You give a small alright and watch as he heads over to the merchant for a moment and then runs off down a small path
Your left to curl up against the wall , hard cement acting as your support as your hold the bag
In it is a first aid spray, crushed up red herb, a map with some personal notes on it and her camera that you pull out
You hang the strap around your neck and then swap your supplies from your bag into hers
Good thing you didn’t bring your favourite with all your patches and pins
You abandon it in favour of your mothers bag, adjusting the straps so they fit correctly as you listen distantly to the gunshots of Leon
He seems to be getting closer, you look out the hole and see merchant waving at you
You give a small tired smile
And then Leon’s footsteps returns and he’s able to open the gate
“That didn’t take long”
“Just the usual. Though the dynamite was annoying”
“I could imagine”
You can’t help but say that with a little chuckle, it makes him smile
“So you cleared the area ahead?”
“Yeah, but we should still be careful incase more came”
He nods and you walk slightly behind him but closer compared to before
The air is still as the two of you begin the trek through the small factory
“I met your uncle”
“You did?! Is he alright”
“Yeah” he pauses for a moment “ran off though before I could as him more. Ashley might be held at a nearby church and he’s terrified that your here”
“Did…” you pause for a moment “you tell him about…my mom?”
Leon shakes his head no
“The minute I mentioned you he dipped before I could say anything else…I know he’s your uncle but I think he knows more than he lets on”
You frown a bit at that but nod
Now thinking back to his letters there were a few odd things he’d mention now and then
But you and your mom didn’t think much about it considering he was a scientist and was overly dramatic for comedic affect
Wait…his letters!
You pull the bag off your back and begin to riffle through it was Leon watches somewhat confused until you pulled out several yellowed letters kept together by a blue ribbon
You hand them to the agent
“Here, these are some of the letters he sent us through the years. Maybe there’s something in them”
He takes them from you and placed them in his briefcase
“When we have a chance to breath I’ll take a look”
You nod once more as you both exit the factory and head up to a small area before the big house
Crows flock the area but are scared away by Leon trying to shoot one
You don’t ask and move on past the set up bear traps to a small well
You unprop the wooden plank keeping it open and cut down yet another lantern thing to get another jewel
But with that comes the sound of a chainsaw
“Shit!”
Leon switches from his trusty handgun to a shotgun as a man with a burlap sack over his head and a chainsaw comes down the steps
One blazing red eye stared out from a small hole in it as he targets Leon
You aim and begin shooting but he pays you no mind, instead focusing purely on Leon as you sun for his head
You don’t even notice the two other villagers sneak up behind you before your thrown over a shoulder
“Jesus Fuck!”
It instinctively falls out your mouth and you see Leon turn towards you before having to focus back on the Chainsaw wielding maniac
The villager holding you walks still carrying you but not before you aim down and shoot at his legs
Making him tumble down along with you in tow
On the muddy ground you aim just in time to stop a different villager from grabbing Leon before he finishes off the chainsaw guy
The one that grabbed you gets up but is shot down once more by Leon before he offers you a hand
You accept and he pulls you up
“Cleared out the area huh?” He says with a sarcastic smile
“Oh quiet down backstreet boy”
“Backstreet boy?”
“Yeah…oh by the way what happened to the jacket?”
“Seems like they took it”
“Wow…rough”
“Yeah especially considering it was 500 bucks”
“You can maybe put it under collateral after this is finished”
The two of you enter through the back of the house and you waste no time unlocking the cabinet once more to get the marble as Leon looks around
You already know the combination from earlier
Ferns, swine and baby from the weird bible passage
“You got it?”
“Yeah, gimme a second though”
You hand him the marble and you go to those pictures strewn about from earlier
Momentarily a flash goes off as you take a picture of the various photographs
You then rush back upstairs to see Leon already opening the door
It clicks and your both now allowed back into the room
Immediately you head for the secret lever from before
You pull it down and a ladder appears
It’s too high for either of you to reach but…
“Can you lift me up? I can search up here while you search down there”
“Sure thing. Try and find anything that seems important”
“Alright”
Leon bends down and lets you climb into his back, he stands up a little letting you reach up and climb your way up the ladder with the help of pushing yourself up with the wardrobe
It’s dark up there, frighteningly so but your mom had luckily packed a small flashlight that you attack to the strap of the bag
The attic is…packed to say the least
Knick knacks and antiquities scattered around on shelves
You shine your light around still a bit jittery from being in such a dark space
You find some more photos scattered around along with a diary entry
One that told the story of the village and how men in black robes one day came into the town
You take pictures of the notes and move further after ducking under some wood beams
You find more notes this time about a grandfather and his granddaughter and grandson
How he fell sick and that the writer promised to do something for when the time comes
The old man died and the grandson and granddaughter watch as the cabin burns down
They both watched the flames even as dawn rose and the next day they had left entirely as if they were never there in the first place
Laying beside an antique camera you find that old photo from before
The grandfather and his grandchildren
The Navarro family, 1981
Your mom and uncle’s face stare back in their younger forms
Serra Navarro, their last name, your last name
The photo is quickly put into your bag as is the old camera that you think could fetch a high price-
Suddenly there are gunshots along with the muffled sound of someone being thrown
You crawl your way back quickly towards the exit and peer down to see the tall bastard from before who’s now returned
He places a foot on Leon’s arm
Pressing down as you ready your gun whilst he grabs him by the neck
He walks near the window and your about to pull the trigger when you see something through the window
A flash of red and then a subtle shine
Gunshots ring out again and he throws Leon like a rag doll
The government agent hitting the wood footrest of the bed
Leon stumbles up and grabs his gun as the man leaves
Mumbling something to himself before he turns his attention back to you
“Are you alright?”
You jump down and rush over to him as he regains some balance
“Been better, but I’m fine”
You nod albeit a bit hesitantly watching as he loads his gun once more
“Find anything up there?”
“He knew my mom and uncle. Somewhat Briefly…but, he knew them”
There is clear anger in your voice as you say this, he can’t blame you
“Cmon, I got a key that I think let’s us into that church”
“Alright”
“We’re almost done, we’ll all be home soon”

YOUR STYLE IS SO CHARMING OMGGG YOU ARE AMAZING!!😭💗💗💗💕💕💕 May I know what you draw on and what program you use???🥺🥺🥺 And how much time do you spend on one comic?😳💕💕 I'm really curious but you don't have to answer if you don't want to!! Have a nice day🥰🥰🥰
YOU ARE SO SWEET THANK YOU!! 💕💕
I’m more than happy to answer all your questions! I currently use Procreate on my iPad for all of my drawings. I used to use Clip Studio Paint on my laptop, but I decided to splurge on a new iPad last summer and needed a new art program, so I chose Procreate because I heard a lot of great things about it! I really like it and feel it’s so easy to use.
As for my comics it really depends on several factors: the length of the idea, the coloring, and my passion for the project overall! The last one can be very important as if I’m really invested and excited about an idea it can take me about 3 days to complete, one day for sketching and preliminary lineart, day two is dumping colors and finishing lineart, and day three is shading. I’d say typically on average about 5 to 7 days for a comic that’s four to six pages long! The recent one of Silver and Lilia painting took me five days, though it would’ve taken four cuz I was just lazy on one day last week and did like a text bubble and called it quits lol
The process kinda looks like this, I’ll use an upcoming Sebcroc ceremonial robes comic to show my process:
Step 1 is sketching it out to know what dialogue I want, where to place characters, making sure to make each page different so the layouts feel fresh and not dull/repeated:
Tumblr media
Step Two is actually lining everything. Usually I start with the text and text bubbles, then move on to characters. Eyes usually come last because I sometimes find them hard to draw…
Tumblr media
I would show step three, but I haven’t actually colored this one yet, but imagine the page is colored and full of life! Then I just repeat on other pages till it’s done and ready to post. Thank you for the lovely ask, hopefully I answered all your questions! 💕

i've been following you for a very very long time (the snk askblog days !) and your art still blows me away every time. i just love your colors and painterly style. do you have some art tips, tutorials, brush recommendations etc ? i really want to improve my digital painting skills and i'm curious about your process
Oh no! Not the ask blogs..... but thank you so much for your continued support of my work 🥺♥
I think the most important things I always keep in mind is colour theory though I can't say im always successful each time I do it 😂 Honestly when I see guides it all never makes sense to me?? What do they want me to do even!!
Tumblr media
These guys explain things pretty well though and much more professional than me:
Emel's Colour theory notes Gigi's colour/lighting notes And also this image right here
Tumblr media
Honestly main things are
limit your palette - use a colour fill set to low opacity overlay or 10% opacity normal for the mood you want for the piece, your character might be wildly coloured but this brings it together
split/complementary palettes are great, saturate one side, desaturate the other for contrast (looks teal but its actually a grey if you swatch it )
Tumblr media
don't you dare use white grey or black to shade! dont you dare!!!!
add a slightly more saturated colour in the middle of your shading gradient for some pop
Tumblr media
personal taste but i like to dab some colour elsewhere where it might not belong 🤷‍♀️
Tumblr media
my personal pet peeve is that i dont actually like swatching from character sheets im sorry the cat is out of the bag whats the fun if you cant play around with lighting and mood
most important skill is to not be scared to try things that are hard that you think wont work out!! trust in the process!! itll look like ass the whole way through!! use colour balance at the end if you need to!!
also colour theory relies on the ryb wheel rather than rgb which really messes with you in digital settings... thats something i still need to memorise more... awful
Also tosses this out here too: Jing's brushes are my current go to since I work more in procreate now
Anyways half the time I dont even listen to myself and forget the stuff i should be doing and i have to go back and ref my own art style so who knows!!! take this all with a lot of salt
