I think Will Graham's problem is that he's constantly surrounded by only 4 groups of people: therapists, serial killers, cops and dogs. No wonder he ended up like That.

My roman empire? How Abigail looks and acts so much more mature around Will in early season three compared to the scared child she is throughout the show- which is entirely because she's in Will's imagination. He's preserved her not as a broken and abused or traumatized girl, but as the young woman she would have grown into had he been given the chance to properly father her. Maybe that's why he lets her go; because he's seen her as all she could have been, and he knows he'll always have that version of her with him, wading in the stream.

i want to talk about how the parallel between gideon and bedelia mirrors the parallel between pope nicholas iii and lucifer in dante's inferno
contrapasso: "the divine punishment of a sinner mirrors the sin being punished"
in dante's inferno canto 19, the pilgrim and virgil are in the eighth circle of the inferno where those guilty of simony (corrupt churchmen) are punished. these people (including pope nicholas iii) are eternally, with flaming feet, upside down in baptismal font-like holes.
their contrapasso is their baptism being perverted in the same way they perverted the church. upside down in holes like baptismal fonts, their feet are "baptized" with fire instead of their heads being baptized with water.

(left is pope nicholas iii's flaming feet. right is dante and virgil reaching the other side of earth after climbing lucifer's body, where lucifer's legs stick out.)
in mark musa's notes for canto 19, this specific line lit my brain up like fireworks
"in the final canto of the inferno…dante pauses and looks up to see the raised legs of lucifer protruding from the crevice in which he is frozen, like a magnification of the legs of nicholas. just as nicholas defrauded god's church, so lucifer tried to defraud god himself"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the beginning of gideon and bedelia's contrapasso-esque punishments. i just noticed the same leg is the first to go for both. and theyre both wearing blue. hmmm....)
in november, i made a post connecting gideon and bedelia's fates in hannibal: their limbs being cooked and eaten one by one in front of them. both gideon and bedelia were living lives that were not theirs to live. gideon as the chesapeake ripper, and bedelia as hannibal's companion in italy. so, they both get to see how it feels to (literally) have a part of them, their identity, their lives, taken from them, just as they took those things from another. the divine punishment of a sinner mirrors the sin being punished.
just like nicholas defrauded god's church,
gideon mocked the chesapeake ripper
so lucifer tried to defraud god himself,
bedelia tried to mock hannibal and will themselves.

Me: All the characters in Hannibal are so well crafted because none of them are just one thing. Hannibal is a killer but also a lover. Jack is someone who cares very deeply about his friends, and sometimes the friendship blinds him and sometimes he destroys the friendship for the greater good. Alana is not just a love interest for the male leads; she finds power and companionship by making her own decisions, and she isn't always right in those decisions either. Even side characters are great. Chiyoh is very much a shield at Hannibal's whims (and Will's for a brief moment) but she's also very self-assured and doesn't follow the whims of others if she doesn't want to. Reba is very much traumatized by what Francis did to her (and rightfully so) and it's easy to put her in the victim category, especially with her disability, but she established early in her relationship with Francis that she is not to be pitied and she's very independent and that she can and will move on from hardships that come her way. Abel was a maniac who killed his own family and also just a little bit of a creep (mainly with Alana) but also he was cunning and sure of himself and had a sense of humor. It's just so cool how every character has strengths and weaknesses. Not one of them is all good or all bad and that's really cool.
Also me: Mason Verger is a despicable human being and the only thing I like about him is that I don't like literally anything about him. He's horrible and I know he already died but he should die again.
