Epson’s talks about innovative printing solutions at pre-drupa meet

At the pre-drupa press conference held in Dusseldorf from 25-27 March, Duncan Ferguson, vice president of Epson Europe’s commercial and industrial printing division, offered a glimpse into the company’s anticipated showcase at drupa 2024. Epson will be present in Hall 5, Stand D20, at the printing and packaging show scheduled to be held from May 28 to June 7 in Dusseldorf.

Titled ‘Changing the Model for Localised Production,’ Ferguson outlined Epson’s commitment to manufacturing, focusing on compact, efficient printing solutions, and emphasizing personalization and on-demand production technology.

His presentation covered several key areas:

Advanced Printhead Technology: Epson’s latest industrial printhead, the D3000, is tailored for various applications including packaging, labels, textiles, and décor. Special features include high speed, single-pass, 1200 dpi resolution with nozzle-level re-circulation.

Innovative Product Design: Epson’s new product design concept features space-saving designs, replaceable printheads, enhanced environmental standards, and improved user interfaces. The new platform will be easier to use with a large 4.3-inch user interface display, low profile and flat top design, media cleaner and a media lifter allowing for a single-person set-up.

Next-Generation Label Press: Epson’s new SurePress labeling concept promises increased productivity and image quality through real-time nozzle detection and additional enhancements.

Direct-to-Fabric Printing: Ferguson introduced the Monna Lisa 13000, a new digital fabric printing solution offering in-line printing with sustainable pigment inks and enhanced print durability. The innovation aims to revolutionize textile printing by eliminating the need for post-treatment equipment, making it more accessible to commercial printers.

Productivity Breakthroughs: The SureColor F10000, Epson’s most productive dye-sublimation printer, features jumbo roll capabilities and self-replaceable parts for minimal downtime. The dye-sublimation printer delivers productivity up to 255m2/h, 10L hot-swap inks (LcLm/FyFp) and has self-replaceable parts for easy maintenance.

Personalization Solutions: Epson’s range of printers targeting the personalization and micro-production market, including hybrid DTG/DTFilm printers and UV flatbed printers. This included the recently launched hybrid DTG/DTFilm SureColor F1000 and the A4 UV flatbed SureColor V1000. Ferguson introduced the A3 UV flatbed SureColor V2000 and new micro-production SureColor F2200 and showed the complete range of mini-lab (D1000, D500) and smaller dye sublimation printers (SureColor F500 and F100).

Supporting Software and Tools: Epson’s software and process management tools, including the SD-10 Scanning Table and Edge Color Lite software, which enhance color management and consistency. Also launched was the new SD-10 scanning table along with mentions of Epson’s Edge Color Lite and Edge Print software that further the capability to manage distributed printing at the highest quality and consistency.

Focus on services

Ferguson also explained how Epson is delivering successful product reconditioning programs to extend the life of Epson printers and create a more sustainable business model. He talked about Epson’s reconditioning program, which aims to repair, repurpose and upgrade products on its customers‘ premises. He mentioned how Epson has established a central facility for technical refurbishment work and is collecting and returning customer products; how it reuses cartridges and printer parts and collects cartridges that can be refilled with genuine Epson ink.

Future developments

Finally, Ferguson revealed future developments, including support for more sustainable fashion using Epson’s Dry Fiber Technology (DFT). DFT produces durable printable fabric from used garments without any water. He said that the Japanese fashion designer Yuima Nakazato is using DFT to experiment with batches of cotton, polyester and silk and plans to commercialize his range in 2024. Some examples of Dry Fibre fabric fashion items were on display at the presentation.

He discussed Epson’s new direct-to-shape technology and explained how the company is developing its expertise with inkjet technology to print on complex shapes using automation with its robots.

Call out post!!!

So its Pride Month, yes? We know this, we all agree? Good.

The UKs biggest (and only, technically) chain bookstore Waterstones has been instructing staff at their shops to "scale back" their Pride displays. In several shops, what started as big wall units and tables full of fiction and non-fiction queer lit with big rainbow flags and decorations, is now mostly small sections away from the Front of Store with a handful of titles and one (1) small A4 poster to indicate they're for Pride (the downloadable Pride banners and POS have all been deleted from the company intranet - what is on there is only there because some staff at a few shops still had last years saved on their shop computers). There has been NO mention of Pride in any company emails, and NO info packets of new queer lit being published AT ALL.

How do I know this? Well, lets just say... I FUCKING WORK THERE. And im GAY AS HELL. Im PISSED.

I've spoken to a lot of my colleagues and everyone is angry and confused. This is the first year since I started several years ago that The Company has done NOTHING. It's so stark and entirely transparent.

And it demonstrates EXACTLY why Corporate Pride and Pinkwashing has been a fucking farce from the beginning. Look around you, there isnt NEARLY as much hype this year, and its because all of these bullshit, lying, greedy fucking companies are too scared of being called "woke". Not a single one of them have the goddamn nerve or backbone to stand up and show support in the face of right-wing, bigoted media. This is EXACTLY why we should never have allowed these companies at Pride. We should NEVER have praised any of them for "daring" to throw on a rainbow icon. Because the INSTANT it's decided that being "woke" is too much of a risk, they abandon us.

Miron Galic’s family photos

29 januari 2020, Arnhem

Vanochtend was ik in de trein gestapt om als extern deskundige aanwezig te zijn op het eindexamen van Miron Galic. Dit zou plaats gaan vinden op Werkplaats Typografie, een plek waar ik vaker over had gehoord, maar nooit eerder was geweest.

Na binnenkomst en een rondleiding door het gebouw nam Miron me mee naar de presentatieruimte. Hier was het allemaal om te doen vandaag. Wat ik daar zag waren witte muren met daarop ingelijste fotografische afdrukjes. Ze werden vergezeld met vier witte A4tjes tekst erop, opgeplakt met doorzichtig plakband.

De foto’s zijn afgedrukt op 10 bij 15 cm, het klassieke handzame formaat dat het persoonlijke karakter van fotografie benadrukt. Op dit formaat zijn de foto’s geschikt om in te plakken in een foto album waar je tekstjes bij kunt schrijven. Een beschrijving van omstandigheden, plaats, de namen van de mensen op de foto’s. Zo’n foto album geeft de mogelijkheid momenten her te beleven die je eerder in werkelijkheid hebt beleefd. Als antwoord op onze onmachtige relatie met tijd, we kunnen tijd immers niet stilzetten of op een andere manier controleren. Het enige dat we met tijd kunnen doen is het simpelweg ondergaan. Ik denk dat we met het maken van foto’s ons onvermogen naar tijd uitdrukken.  Wanneer je zo’n foto album bekijkt, doe je dat bladerend. Op elke pagina zijn meerdere foto’s te zien. De foto’s worden gepresenteerd met context, in chronologische volgorde. Het geheel weerspiegelt meestal een levensjaar. En uiteindelijk jaren later, staat het voltooien van het volledige proces van het maken van een foto album voor het rustig afsluiten van een levensfase.   De foto’s die Miron presenteerde waren nooit in een foto album terechtgekomen, hij vond ze terug als stapeltje. Stapeltjes foto’s gaan makkelijk door de hand. Je bekijkt ze één voor één terwijl ze door je handen glijden, de foto waar je klaar mee bent en lang genoeg naar hebt gekeken, verplaats je onderaan het stapeltje en de volgende verschijnt bovenop.   Na verloop van tijd verdwijnen stapeltjes meestal in kasten of lades. De volgorde van een stapeltje kan veranderen, de foto’s kunnen makkelijker beschadigen of vies worden. Ze zijn minder beschermd dan in een foto album en worden blootgesteld aan het leven zelf. Er is nog geen waarde aan toegedicht. De individuele foto’s zijn daardoor meer open voor interpretatie.    Alle foto’s zijn gemaakt met een analoge camera, wat betekent dat er fysieke moeite is gedaan om de foto’s in handen te krijgen. Het volle fotorolletje is ooit weggebracht en vervolgens opgehaald. Ik vind dat altijd een aandoenlijk besef als ik kijk naar foto’s uit mijn eigen jeugd. Dat mijn ouders daar echt moeite voor hebben gedaan.

In de ruimte van Miron waren vijftien foto’s te zien. Op geen enkele foto die Miron had geselecteerd was een mens te zien. Wat wel te zien was, waren schapen in een weiland, een zelfgemaakt spaceship van lego met daarachter een klok, de bovenste rand van een tuinstoel, een bosje rozen met daarin een briefkaart, een houten stapel van blokken die een huisje vormen, een schilderij op een mini tafeltje, een kindertekening die geplaatst is op een rieten mand, een bewolkte lucht waarin de zon ook doorkomt, een plantenbak met steentjes erin, de houten televisiekast met daarin de televisie, een kleedje met daarop de huistelefoon, een pot met een plant erin, in de koelkast geplaatste verjaardagstaart- restanten met zes uitgeblazen kaarsjes, een foto van het interieur met daarop de salontafel, een hanglamp en op de achtergrond de bank en een foto gemaakt in de dierentuin met daarop een giraffe en een hert.  

Al deze foto’s zijn gemaakt door Miron’s ouders. Het zijn foto’s van de gewoonste dingen die je maar kunt bedenken. De foto’s zijn gemaakt op het moment dat zijn ouders voor het eerst in Nederland gingen wonen nadat ze Bosnië waren ontvlucht vanwege de oorlog.

Voor mij stralen deze foto’s dankbaarheid en rust uit. Rust om te kijken. Zelfs rust om te spelen, Miron vertelde dat in de foto’s vaak het speelse karakter van zijn vader te zien is, een voorbeeld daarvan is de foto van de huistelefoon waarop zijn vader kaarsvet had geplaatst. En ik haal dankbaarheid uit de foto’s, vanwege het ervaren van de rust om te kijken. En het besef van de dingen om je heen. Dat je je omgeving echt ziet en dat ze het waard is om vast te leggen.

Het werk draagt de titel “In the end it’s nice to think we were actually quite normal”. Het weerspiegelt het manipulatieve karakter van fotografie, de ontmenselijking van een complexe tijd. Fotografie kan diepe menselijke emoties niet weergeven, die kunnen alleen beschreven of besproken worden. Dit is dan nog het enige tastbare dat is overgebleven. Het stapeltje foto’s dat Miron op een dag terugvond.

Miron heeft vier teksten op de muur geplakt. Elke tekst had hij opgenomen met de geluidsrecorderfunctie van zijn mobiele telefoon waarin hij uit probeerde te leggen waar dit project over gaat. Iedere keer is de tekst net iets anders, terwijl het over hetzelfde gaat. Zo is het ook vaak met fotografie en de herinnering zelf, keer op keer veranderd de waarde ervan, terwijl je naar dezelfde foto kijkt. Daarnaast experimenteert hij met deze tekstjes in hoeveel informatie hij de kijker wil mee geven. Ook heeft Miron geprobeerd de foto’s zo spannend mogelijk te combineren. Het is moeilijk uit te leggen waarom de combinaties zo goed werkten, ik kom dan vaak niet verder dan dat het goed voelde de foto’s naast elkaar te zien. Ze benadrukken overeenkomsten of lieten een tegenstelling zien.

Ik vind de naïviteit en openheid van Miron’s werk heel mooi. Ik denk vaak dat het gesprek dat je naar aanleiding van een kunstwerk hebt, het echte kunstwerk is. Miron ontdekt met dit werk steeds meer over zichzelf, met elk gesprek dat hij hierover voert. Zowel met zijn ouders, als met zijn klasgenoten of andere mensen die dichtbij hem staan. Ik denk dat hij behoefte heeft om te reflecteren op deze voor hem bepalende levensfase, een fase die zijn leven een definitieve richting heeft gegeven.  

Het oproepen om aandachtig te kijken naar simpele ingelijste 10x15 cm foto’s is, in deze tijd waarin een overvloed aan beeld tot ons komt, een daad van verzet op zichzelf.   Het werk is alleen toegankelijk voor mensen die echt geïnteresseerd zijn. Ik hou er van als een kunstenaar een dergelijke blokkade van ontoegankelijkheid durft op te werpen. Het niet mooier te maken dan het is, uitgaat van simpelheid. Er zullen mensen zijn, die het werk daarom geen kans geven. Maar anderzijds wekt deze simpele presentatie juist nieuwsgierigheid op, want waarom worden deze op het eerste gezicht alledaagse foto’s, op deze manier gepresenteerd als eindexamenwerk?

29th of Januari 2020, Arnhem

In the morning of January 29th, I took the train to Arnhem to function as an external expert for Miron Galics’ graduation exposition. This took place at the ‘Typografie Werkplaats’, a place that I’ve heard of but never visited before. After a tour through the building, Miron took me to his exhibition space. In this room he presented framed photographs on white walls, accompanied by four A4 pages with text, which were glued to the wall with transparent tape.

The prints were 10x15 cm, a classic format that emphasizes the personal nature of photography. Moreover, this size is specifically suitable for photo albums and allows to e.g. add a description, location and who are seen in the photos. Going through such a photo album gives the opportunity to relive a moment from the past. Since we can only undergo time and are unable to stop it, photos are the answer to our powerless relationship with time. It is therefore that I believe that we try to express our inability with time through photography. When going through such photo albums, you view several images per page, which are displayed in chronological order and usually include context. This concept portrays a phase in someones life and completing the process, to me stands for ending a chapter.

The photos Miron exhibited never ended in a photo album but are in stacks instead. We view a pile of photos one by one while the photos easily slide through our hands. The ones you’ve seen for long enough, are placed back at the bottom of the stack and the next one appears on top. Over time, piles usually disappear in cupboards or drawers. The order of a stack may change, the photos get damaged or dirty and thus are less protected than in an album. No value has yet been attributed to it and seemingly, separate photos are more open to interpretation.

All photos were taken with an analog camera, which means that physical effort was made in order to have these photos. Once full, the camera roll was brought to develop and later picked up. I always find this a touching method, also when looking at photos from my own youth and the realization that my parents made all this effort.

Fifteen photos were shown at Miron’s space. At none of his selected photos a human is seen. The photos did illustrate sheep in a meadow, a homemade Lego spaceship with a clock in the background, the edge of a garden chair, a bouquet of roses with a postcard in it, a pile of wooden blocks that form a house, a painting on a mini table, a child's drawing that was placed on a basket, a cloudy sky with the sun coming through, a planter with stones in it, a wooden tv-cabinet with a television inside, a rug with an old school telephone on it, a pot with plant, leftovers of a birthday cake in the fridge with six blown out candles, an interior with coffee table, a ceiling lamp with in the background a sofa, and a photo made in the zoo with a giraffe and deer on it.

All these photos were taken by Miron’s parents the moment they arrived in the Netherlands after fleeing Bosnia due to war. They exemplify the most common things one can imagine. To me, these photos represent gratitude and tranquillity, and bring peace while watching at them. Miron said that the photos often display his fathers’ playful nature, an example of this is the photo of their telephone on which his father had put candle wax. I experience a sense of gratefulness by witnessing the tranquil sceneries. Moreover, it raises awareness of the simple things around me, and makes me realize they are worthy to capture.

His work bears the title "In the end it's nice to think we were actually quite normal". It reflects the manipulative nature of photography, the complexity of time. Photography cannot express deep human emotions; human feelings can only be described or discussed. The pile of photos that Miron one day had found are the only tangible remains.

Miron has placed four texts on the wall. Through recordings on his mobile phone, every text is supported by an explanation of where the project is about. Every time the text is slightly different while it is about the same topic. In photography, this happens too. The attached memories and its value changes overtime, and forever will while looking at the same photo. Miron also experiments with how much text he’s using and the amount of information it reveals. In addition, he tried to present the photos in an interesting combination. Personally, it is hard to explain why the combinations were good the way they were, but my attempt is to say it simply felt good to see an organized line of photos, side by side. They either emphasized similarities or showed a contrast.

I like the naivety and openness in Miron's work. I believe that art evokes a conversation, and to me this is the core value art has. Through his work, he discovered more about himself by having conversations with his parents, classmates or others close to him. I think that he felt the need to reflect on this crucial phase in his life, a phase that gave a definitive direction for his future.

Being invited to carefully look at simple framed 10x15 cm photos in a time where an abundance of images receive us, seems an act of resistance. His work is only accessible to people who are sincerely interested. I love it when an artist dares to include an accessibility blockade. Solely based on simplicity, not making it prettier than it is. Her presence comes in stark contrast with the headmaster’s gloomy office ; in the child’s eyes she’s like an angel in the middle of a funeral.

“ Do you really want to start a fuss with circus people? ”

The headmaster’s voice is firm and rigid. Even his tone betrays how conservative his thought is. Thick-framed glasses sit on top of the eggplant he has for a nose. A little freckled nose scrunches up in distaste at the sound of his voice, hiding behind the door.

“ If it is to help a child that’s clearly suffering, then yes.”

She sounds determined. The headmaster huffs loudly in response.

“ I understand that Valeska needs special attendance, but our school doesn’t offer such services. Why don’t you go to the municipality and ask for a social worker? ”

“ Because I need your written permission for that. ”

“ I’m afraid I can’t do that, Sorkin. ” He shakes his head.

“ Why? Because your name will be on the paper? ” The response comes sharp as a blade. Her voice is trembling as she starts to lose her temper.

“ Because, as I said, I’m not a social worker, I’m a headmaster. And I’m not gonna step into other people’s field. Valeska is not a registered student. It’s not in my jurisdiction to interfere. We’re already being generous by letting him attend, despite all the trouble he’s causing. You know it well yourself that your colleagues can’t wait to say goodbye. ”

A pause that seems to last forever; tension reaches its climax as they stare into each other’s eyes, both unwilling to back off.

“ You’re in the wrong profession, Mr. Wilson. ”

The teacher finally comments, her gentle voice laced in bitterness. His bushy brows furrow at her response. But Ms. Sorkin has already pushed herself off the table with a small scoff, as if she couldn’t care less what Wilson has to say. She probably doesn’t, Jerome thinks.

“ And you’re not being realistic, Ms. Sorkin. ”

She heads for the door without another word. Small feet quickly retreat to the middle of the hall. Black heels tap behind them, echoing down the empty corridor. The woman starts to head in the opposite direction; but her blue eyes seem to have caught sight of the red head staring at her intensely.

“ Oh. ” She turns around slowly. Her features soften, as if she purposefully hides the tension from her previous conversation away from the eyes of the kid. “ Hi there, Jerome. ” She still sounds a bit more stiff and awkward than usual. Her eye darts to the side. She’s nervous, Jerome concludes, because she realizes he might have overheard something. “ I- aren’t you supposed to be in class? ” The scold has a hint of playfulness, as it always does with Ms. Sorkin.

The child approaches slowly, then extends both hands to display the paper he’s been carrying all the while. It’s an A4 drawing paper, ripped off from a coloring book. The picture depicts a clown holding a balloon, drawn in thick black lines to help kids stay within the lines. Though in Jerome’s case, they didn’t do the trick; the clown has been painted a solid red, but he completely failed to stay within the lineart. He hands it over with a serious expression. Ms. Sorkin’s face lights up with a beautiful smile.

“ Ah, right I totally forgot about your project! I’m so sorry! ” After a brief inspection, she offers the child a thumbs up. “ You did a great job on this one. Maybe next time you could try mixing some more colors, that might be fun. Don’t you think? ” Ms. Sorkin’s voice is so full of life. She buzzes with energy. So does Jerome, but hers seems to be more controlled. The vibe is not as rough and jagged as Jerome’s sudden fluctuations, it’s a smooth soundwave. When she speaks, the birds’ chirping becomes more melodic. Yet, her smile falters when she notices how quiet her student is ; unusually quiet, in fact.

“… Everything okay? ”

He decides to swallow the words for once. It’s not easy to do. He wants to yell and tear the papers apart, scratch the walls and throw eggs at Mr. Wilson’s car.But at the same time part of him has already grown accustomed to this learned helplessness. His can’t help his face falling, though. After a while, Ms. Sorkin makes a weird expression - the child can’t comprehend if she’s pitying him or if she’s annoyed - and kneels before him. Her face is now on his level, where he can stare right into her sparkling blue eyes; she really is enchanting.

Why can’t she be his mom instead ?

“ Don’t listen to him, Jerome. ” Her warm hand rests on his tiny shoulder, expression tender and full of something the boy is unable to understand; affection. “ You can do great things. ” She gives him a light pat and tucks a few strawberry strands behind his ear. Freckled cheeks are tinted a light pink. Ms. Sorkin’s smile grows tender. When she speaks again, her voice is smooth and exerts a nurturing warmth. “ Great! I’ll see you then.” She offers a warm pat on the back and stands straight up again. The boy still looks down in the dumps, but perhaps not as upset as before. Ms. Sorkin doesn’t seem satisfied with that outcome though. She purses her lips and offers yet another kind smile, before pinching his cheek. “ Hey, come on. Give me a smile. ”
