#a manifesto about how SHIT the school was thinking those teachers would care enough to actually change something

I'm sure there's better schools out there, but I've attended about 4 different art schools (1 high school, 3 college) and all of them had a focus not on "how to make art" but on "how to be an artist". it wasn't a hobby it was a lifestyle. how to market your art, how to market yourself, how to make the art that industry professionals will want to see; the colleges, the employers, the professors. how to make bigger art, more art, quality and quantity all at once. and, because of the limits of time: how to skip sleep, how to skip meals, how to skip socializing, how to isolate yourself in your room all weekend doing nothing but making something for someone else.
these are all major elements in their curriculums, if not in some schools even more of a focus than the art itself.
from a capitalist's viewpoint this makes sense. if you're going to art school intending to get an art job, you're gonna need good job skills. you're gonna need to know things like how to sell yourself on all the major social media profiles and then some, both small scale for commission work and large scale for your jobs at major corporations. (you will, of course, most likely be doing both. neither job pays enough by itself). you're gonna need to know how to "grind", nonstop, you're gonna need to know how to grin and bare it. you're going to need to know how to mass produce schlock cause that's what a job is, and that's what you've signed up for. this is all logical.
but if you take a step back from that lens, it all falls apart. most of these students are still kids or young adults in their early 20s (which isn't much more than a kid, let's be real). so, a kid enjoys art for the love and joy of creation, a kid enjoys art because humans enjoy art, they want to make things for themselves, for their friends, to relax, to feel good - so they're coerced into an art institution.
And I can 100% guarantee you that ANY and ALL criticisms you have on the commodification of art on social media, absolutely applies to every single art institution I have ever been a part of, if not more so. Art institutions are not a safe haven away from capitalism, consumerism, and the domination of corporations - they fester it. They survive off it.
competition within the algorithm is brutal. competition instructed by your guardians, between yourself and your real life peers - as a child, teen, and young adult - is even worse. this is very literal competition by the way. I have, multiple times, had my art ranked in value against my peers. our art (if not our names) listed from worst to best.
the "you can sleep when you're dead" mentality is also very literal, I need you to understand. this is one of the things that haunts me the most. why does a child (as young as 14!!) need to sacrifice their health for creation - creation so forced it doesn't even have any passion or love attached anymore. you could say my teachers and professors didn't know what they were encouraging, but you'd be wrong. a student who sacrifices their health for art is more than applauded, directly for that fact. likewise a student who prioritizes their health, at the sacrifice of "better art", is called lazy ...at best.
I don't think people understand how hellish art schools are. I don't even think most art students themselves realize it amidst the plague of self-deprecating humor that spreads thru those buildings (which I've also seen encouraged by college professors). maybe some other schools are better. I don't know.
When I was still a child one of my classmates made a piece about how suicidal our art classes were making her. (they made everyone suicidal. this was known. there were surveys done about it, and nothing else). but, my teacher told her not to talk about that kind of stuff during crit, or he'd be forced to report it to the guidance office. although he wanted her to keep making this art (so personal, so meaningful, it was - by his standards - better than most our class's), he didn't want anything to be done about the suicidal tenancies of this child he was in charge of. he didn't want anything to be done about the art classed he helped plan and teach. he didn't want any solution to the problem, he just wanted her to keep making art about it.
I know this is long, and I've spoken about this before, but it feels important to understand. It's not just social media that's "ruining art". But it's not these art institutions either. you could reform this system as much as you'd like and I promise it'd do all but nothing for you. because these flaws, for how traumatizing, life changing - and to be frank: life ending - they are, they are not the root cause of this commodification. these institutions are the physical manifestation of capitalism. it's capitalism and the very lens in which we view art that's the problem here. maybe that's a grim note to end this rant on, when there's not much we can do about that on a personal level. or maybe there's better schools out there. I don't know.

We Voted for Murderers
Tumblr media
65.2%.
That’s the percentage of people who voted for the Conservative candidate in my constituency, and I feel completely heartbroken. See, things have properly gone to shit.
If we’re talking numbers?
Local councils estimate the number of people sleeping rough on any given night between 2010 and 2018 has risen from 1,768 to 4,677, a 165% increase. The Trussell Trust, the UK’s largest food bank charity, has reported a 5,146% increase in emergency food parcels being distributed since 2008. An 8% cut in spending per school pupil since 2009. Funding from central government to local government cut by 60% in that same period. £37 billion less spent on working-age social security compared to over a decade ago by 2020. A 90% fall in the number of social homes being built since 2010. A £7,300,000 decrease in funding for women’s shelters between 2011 and 2017. Don’t even get me started on the government’s treatment of the NHS.
I’ve heard stories of individuals applying for PIP due to mental illness being berated about suicide attempts and the likelihood of another as part of a “formal interview” process to see whether they qualify. People collapsing in job centre queues, freezing to death on the streets and the elderly in their homes, suicides whilst on never ending mental healthcare waiting lists. In fact, 17,000 sick and/or disabled individuals have died whilst waiting for PIP payments to come through, and in total, UCL researchers have linked 120,000 deaths to austerity (I’m not going to comment on the irony of my former university that’s notoriously lacklustre when it comes to giving a fuck about the wellbeing of its students publishing this unless...I just did?). 8 years of negligent homicide of the most vulnerable people in our society under the Conservative government and we voted them back in.
So I ask, are people really stupid enough to believe that the politicians responsible for this mess are the ones who are going to fix it just because they make a few characteristically empty promises on TV or does the British public at large really give even less of a fuck about other people than I thought? As in actually not give a fuck about people dying?
I have to tell myself it’s the former. The press’ treatment of Jeremy Corbyn and Labour was scathing.
Corbyn, a man who has stood by the same principles of fairness, justice, and equality, for the entirety of his career, was criticised by the likes of The Sun, The Daily Mail, and The Telegraph, for being indecisive and a threat to this country whilst Boris Johnson, a man who can barely string a sentence together when he is asked to give a straight answer to something and blocked the release of a report covering Russian interference in British politics, was held up as the one people should put their faith in.
I know, the press are never going to be completely neutral. But shouldn’t they at least be committed to integrity? And the truth? Isn’t that the WHOLE FUCKING POINT of journalism? I’ve been hearing the phrase “post-truth world” thrown around a lot and it’s probably an indication of my privilege that it was only with this election that I properly understood what that meant; it was found by the NGO First Draft just 2 days before the election, damage way past the point of done, that 88% of the Conservative Party’s Facebook ads (compared to 0% of Labour’s ads) contained misleading information. The repercussions were non-existent. After Boris Johnson’s claim that Jeremy Corbyn wanted to raise corporation and income tax to the highest levels in Europe was publicised, only Channel 4′s Factcheck website published the actual statistics (France, Belgium, Portugal and Greece all have much higher corporation tax rates than Labour’s proposal). Similarly, in many constituencies, the Lib Dems were posting fliers where Labour candidates were, in the previous election, the runner ups to the Conservative candidate, claiming that it was instead THEIR party’s candidate who had the highest chance of unseating the latter. Days before the election, the headline of one of Britain’s most highly circulated papers claimed that a Corbyn government would plunge us into a crisis the likes of which “we haven’t seen the Second World War”, which is kind of wild considering that 130,000 preventable deaths have been linked to austerity under the Conservative government compared to 70,000 civilian deaths in said war. Not that either is good, obviously, and I can’t believe I have to point that out. But then, right-wingers did paint Jeremy Corbyn as a monster for passing up watching the Queen’s Christmas Day speech to volunteer at a homeless shelter, so I thought I’d just cover my back, y’know.
Shouldn’t there be standards that the media is held to? You know, like not making slanderous statements about some politicians that have no actual basis in fact whilst brushing over the statements of others. Whilst the PM’s father Stanley Johnson was on nation television calling the public illiterate, and Jacob Rees-Mogg was blaming the Grenfell victims deaths on their “lack of common sense”, and Michael Gove was stating that people who needed to use food banks had brought it on themselves because they were not “best able to manage their finances”, it was Jeremy Corbyn who was being called an enemy of the people, accused of trying to plunge us into a “Marxist hell”...I mean, if Denmark and Norway and Finland with some of the highest living standards in the world are “Marxist hell”s  then sure, that’s what he’s doing. But that’s a hell I’m sure a lot of people would find much comfier than a freezing cold pavement. Before Labour had even released their (fully-costed!) manifesto, barefaced lies were being published about how much it would cost and how it would plunge us into trillions of pounds worth of debt, as if it hasn’t increased from £1 trillion to £1.8 trillion in the years since David Cameron took office. Meanwhile, when Labour did publish their manifesto and the Financial Times published a letter signed by 163 prominent economists and academics backing their spending plans? Crickets. Nothing sums it up better than the debate around Jeremy Corbyn’s alleged anti-semitism, discussed ad-nauseam whilst Boris Johnson’s actual racism, islamophobia, misogyny and classism, RIGHT OUT OF THE HORSE’S MOUTH, was completely ignored by most news outlets.
You know what, maybe people earning £85k just DON’T want to pay an extra £3 in tax a week to make sure children get an education. Maybe everybody IS just as selfish as that one twat on Question Time who got all red in the face over the prospect of having to give up an amount less than the cost of a tub of Ben and Jerrys a week. But if that’s true, this isn’t a country I want to live in at all, or a planet I want to live on, really. I hope it’s not. I hope it’s a case of a need for some kind of collective realisation that the Sun ain’t shit. Merseyside did it. The younger generation are catching on. And look at the results there.
Labour probably couldn’t fulfil ALL of their promises. No political party is perfect. I was told again and again how unrealistic those promises were as if that was enough to make me go ”oh...I guess I’ll vote for 4 more years of people dying in the streets instead”. Yes, in an ideal world, the entire manifesto would be made a reality, but it depended on far too many rich people being good and honest. Let’s be real-the elite will always find a way to avoid paying their fare share on the premise that they “earned it”, as if anybody earns billions by sheer hard work alone and past a certain point, not off other people’s backs. As if there aren’t nurses and teachers and firemen and other public sector workers who don’t put in just as much energy and as many hours and emotional labour as CEOs and business owners and investors. But the point is that Labour under Jeremy Corbyn acknowledged this, and their manifesto aimed to give the power back to the average person, from the vulnerable to the supposedly middle class still struggling to make ends meet, and give them the quality of life they deserve. It was built on the simple premise that the people should use their government, not the other way round, and that everybody deserves the basic human rights of shelter, nutrition, safety and dignity, regardless of their fortune in life. However many of Labour’s policies would actually have been fulfilled, it would’ve been a shift in the right direction.
Now the election’s been and gone and I’m scared. Already, the narrative is being rewritten by the billionaires in control of this country that a manifesto like the one we saw this year will never sit right with this country, when it is what so many desperately need. The people putting this information out there know the truth: that Labour’s membership trebled in size under Corbyn (more people voted for him than for any Labour leader since Tony Blair), that most of the safe labour seats were lost because of Brexit, and that if the manifesto had been represented accurately, there’s a good chance that Boris Johnson would no longer be our Prime Minister. I’m scared a person like Jeremy Corbyn will never front Labour again.
Because I do not want a tory painted red who’s friends with Jacob Rees-Mogg behind the scenes, I do not want a war criminal who thinks that bombing innocent people is ever acceptable, I do not want a person who doesn’t see people of colour as part of the working class and indulges in the occasional bit of TERF-ism.
Already, the Conservative party are backpedaling on the few promises they made to increase NHS spending, and I am scared. I am scared for myself, in the event that I need urgent mental health care again, and I am scared for those less privileged than me who don’t have a family to support them, who don't have a roof over their head, who weren’t fortunate enough to be born in a country with relative economic and political stability, who cannot physically go out and work to earn a living. I am worried about the bigots that this election has already emboldened, the Katie Hopkins and the Tommy Robinsons of the world, who think the things that blind luck have graced them with they somehow earned, who pride themselves on ignorance and cruelty and selfishness.
So for now, what can we do?
Join trade unions. Organise. Write to your MPs. Bring attention to those who are vulnerable. Be vocal with your criticism of the establishment. Call out those in politics for an ego-trip hiding behind “personality”. Do your research. Keep an eye on the numbers. The “it doesn’t matter who you vote for, just vote” sentiment is old, because it does. No “as a feminist, I exercise my right to vote for whoever I want”, because as a feminist, you should care about ALL women, not just the white, middle class, able-bodied ones.
And if anyone has any more suggestions, let me know. Because I am sick and tired of living under a government who doesn’t give a fuck about the people it’s supposed to protect.

Types of Ravenclaws - Nicholas Black
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usDdoAXxk_c
The Stereotype
Raven Qualifications: love knowledge, kind of witty
- Whenever they are around, people run
- They are insufferable
- They're just annoying in general and constantly act like they're better than you
- At least one or two of them exist
- You may not find them very often but when you do... you know
- They're the type of person that will debate you until one of you dies, so just give up and let them think that they are right, because it's just not worth it. Just fuckin leave
- The assholes in social media comments that start their comments with 'uM aCtuALLy' and like 'sOurCeS'
- Elitism is so thick that they might as well be in Slytherin
- They love knowledge so they are actually pretty smart
- They have some wit, but no wisdom or creativity
- They get really good grades, so teachers have a love-hate relationship with them as they're a know-it-all but make the class look better
- Usually in the library studying
- Makes you feel stupid in .3 seconds
- They probably drink tea and write Shakespearean lit in their own time [like fucking nerds]
- the LEAST RAVENCLAW Ravenclaw in the tower
The Weird One
Raven Qualifications: Intelligent, wise, creative, original, individual, acceptance
- Basically Luna Lovegood
- They're weird and you know it
- Tend to be obsessive over a few particular topics, eg. if they love crocodiles and you ask them a questions about crocodiles they will whip out an encyclopaedia from their pocket [and you wonder how it fit in there in the first place then you remember you're a wizard]
- They have porcupine teeth under their bed and you don't know why. Nobody knows why, all we know is that we live in fear
- They're the person you call when you know you are being haunted. They know about that spiritual shit. They have the sage ready, they know how to relieve you of your demons [basically if you have a ghostie problem, they gotchu bitch]
- They talk very rarely, but when they do, they either sound like a wise monk or a crackhead... or both [and that, my friends, is entertaining]
- They are divination experts [fuck you, Hermione, they know your future, whatchu gonna do about it]
- They have an ongoing "experiment" since like the first day they were at Hogwarts, and everybody knows there is an experiment, but nobody knows what it is [so the Ravenclaw power lives in fear. The Gryffindor tower should also live in fear, but those fucks aren't scared of anything so like honestly fuck 'em]
- They're like Socrates, sometimes, they're basically like "I know that I know nothing," all humbly-wise like that [and you're like "huh that's why you're a ravenclaw hm ok"]
- Despite having no social skills and scaring everyone shitless all the time, these Ravenclaws are the most mindful and spiritual, most open Ravenclaws
- They accept any theory or idea because "fuck it, we know nothing and anything could be real"
- Scary but pretty cool
The Mum
Raven Qualifications: Intelligence, WIT, wisdom, creativity, originality, SHARPNESS, ACCEPTANCE
- Has a first aid kit on hand and knows how to use it. Basically a doctor. Didn't go to med school, but they know their shit.
- Has a remedy for every illness. Pretty sure they're not allowed to have a potions cabinet in their dormitory, but Flitwick allows it, and so they've just got med potions in the dormitory [even though we have... a-uei- even though we have a hospital wing]
- The best advice giver in both complicated and stupid situations. They will give you some fucking common sense, they will spell it out for you
- NUMBER ONE Ravenclaw
- eg. If you have a boyfriend who has cheated on you multiple times and you ask them for advice they will look you straight in the eye and say "BITCH you deserve better, break up with that hoe" and you should probably listen to them because most everything they say is correct
- They will not tolerate stupidity [she will not tolerate your stupidity, richard, get out of the damn tree]
- They read the entire unabridged Lord of the Rings to their children, A.K.A. first year Ravenclaws and all Hufflepuffs
- The voice of reason [please just listen to her it.. it's all i ask.. please she's right, don't... don't question it]
- Knows all the answers to your homework assignment and knows how to effectively teach it to you [but fuck off dan she will not do your homework for you.. not again]
- If you get into some stupid shit, they'll say 'I told you so' and continue to fix your shit like a GODDESS [honestly she needs more love]
- Breaks up fights and sends people to their rooms. They're not having your bullshit.
- Such a smart person! eg. amazing war strategist [she-she knows. She knows all manipulation tactics, sh-she knows how to get her shit done, she is the strategist of the century, i swear]
The Artist
Raven qualifications: Intelligence, WIT, wisdom, CREATIVITY, originality, INDIVIDUALITY, sharpness, acceptance
- They're probably on Tumblr. That's just how it is.
- They don't give two shits about grades. The school system is rIgGeD............. okAy maybe they do care a little bit, but they'd DIE before they'd admit it
- They're an ex Emo and an activist
- They like politics
- They are the second debater in the house. For the love of god, don't put them in the same room as the Stereotype. Do you wanna fucking die? [i mean i do too, carol, but not now. It is unstoppable force vs immovable object, do you want to explode? didn't think so]
- They're either a music, theatre or art nerd... or possible poetry if you're.. that bitch. [but um if you don't know the difference between a play and a musical, we're judging you- WE'RE JUDGING YOU SEVERELY it's not that difficult i know what a fucking touch-down is]
- They're probably a communist, socialist, anarchist because fUCK CAPITALISM HELL
- Music and art is subJECTIVE YOU CANNOT TEACH IT, KAREN [and that's when the Stereotype walks in and starts a debate on that]
- They're pretty depressed
- They like musicals
- They have an aesthetic Instagram but all the captions are like 'aha lmao i wanna fucking die' and 'i crave death'
- Not gonna lie they cry after a debate even though they started it
- They have high standards that they don't meet themselves
The Bookworm
Raven Qualifications: INTELLIGENCE, wit, wisdom, CREATIVITY, originality, individuality, ACCEPTANCE
- They're kind of like a stereotype too, but they're the good stereotype
- They're like, the chill
- They're only passionate about like books and shit, so if you wanna have a 24 hour conversation with them, just bring up their favourite book series and they won't let you go
- They have a very popular fanfiction account. They are a veteran stan that wrote a 300k word fanfiction that is a STAPLE in the community. They are the fandom's mum
- They have like 30 books to read but for some reason they just read Junie B. Jones again. For the 5th time.
- They're very kind, usually patient, the most empathetic [other than maybe the Mum in the house]
- They do tend to be alone most of the time
- They have an internal debate on whether or not they should focus on their grades or read the 30 books they have to read [they.. somehow... do it both. um... i hate you]
- They're usually friends with the Mum Ravenclaw, they're like the parents of the house. Without them somebody might mysteriously disappear, or like, die [the weird one hasn't come back for three weeks send help]
The Junkie
Raven Characteristics: Wit, creativity, ORIGINALITY, individuality, acceptance
- [i know what you're thinking: 'come on nick, ravenclaws are smart, they wouldn't do drugs!'..... that's where you're wrong, bitch. they would do drugs.. but only the smart drugs. only the safe drugs]
- They only do marijuana. They don't even do any other drugs, and when they DO marijuana, they eat it in a pot brownie so that they don't get cancer from smoking it [like, they're pussies basically, i'm sorrty but]
- Okay, I take it back, they might do LSD once because the Weird One told them that they'd "see god" on LSD, but they'll never do it again cos it was a bad trip and probably killed some of their braincells, so they're a little overce
- They're anti-capitalist, but they never specify what their political and economic beliefs are, so they just kinda say 'fuck capitalism' then they go to bed high as Snoop Dog
- Usually friends with the Weird One [...i'm scared all the time]
- They're high all the time, but they never get caught because they're a Ravenclaw, and Ravenclaws don't get caught [take notes, Slytherin]
- They once woke up with a surrealist painting in one hand and the communist manifesto in the other... they don't know what happened the night before, but they got rid of the evidence real fuckin quick because you can't be too safe
- They claim to be Buddhist and trying to find the real meaning of life, but like they don't practice Buddhism really well.. they-aie- I think they're just doing it for the aesthetic, they know a lot about Buddhism they just don't practice it very well
- They're trying to open their third eye. [none of us want them to. their two eyes are problematic enough, we don't need them to have a third

Duuuude back at Lake Michigan last month the same thing happened to me. I was taking care of my little sister and her five year old friend, so I was so busy making sure they were okay that the wave plowed me halfway across the beach

babybatbrat said: (2) so i start the problem and explain how i got through all the values - "okay so the rod is 5 inches long and half of 5 is 3 and a half -" and i stopped there bc it occurred to me that 3.5 is not half of 5. "it's what?" My teacher asks. i put my head in my hands and stood there for a minute before picking up my work and walking to the back of the classroom while he laughed, bc i had just spent 45 minutes convinced that half of 5 was 3.5 and not, in fact, 2.5, and that was the only thing wrong
Honestly??? Relatable

Incredible...... 10/10.....

Tim Drake? It’s been years since I heard that name.....

Thank you! I’m excited to listen to these! I’ll start right now!
Anonymous said: 1) What are the good comics to read for Batfamily stuff (from any point in time) and 2) what are the best Jason Todd comics? Thanks!
Okay for Jason I would definitely start with the big ones, which are A Death In the Family and Under the Red Hood. After that you could try Red Hood: the Lost Days and Countdown to Final Crisis. I would avoid the n52 series until you have a good enough grasp of the character to recognize bad writing when you see it.
For the generalized batfam.... that’s pretty broad. My personal favorites are Red Robin, Batgirl (2009), and both B&R series. If you have more specific questions, you should IM me! I promise I’m better about answering those than asks

daziy said: Do we know who Barbara's mother usually is?
Yeah! In her original version, Babs had a birth mom and an adopted mom. She was originally Jim’s niece, so her birth mom’s name was Thelma Gordon. After the adoption, her parents were Jim and Barbara Gordon, with her adopted mother being her namesake. So two Barbara Gordons.
I think for awhile the canon was that her mother died in a car crash, but the current version has her still alive. She left Jim when Babs was young, taking her son (Babs’s brother) with her. James Gordon (the son) turned out to be a serial killer.
Barbara Gordon Sr. and James Gordon Jr. both appeared in the n52 Batgirl series during the Death of the Family arc. There’s also a very good story about James from the Dickbats period. That one’s called The Black Mirror, if I’m not mistaken?

Oh goodness anon I hope you’re not serious about almost dying.... but thanks?
Anonymous said: hi amy! would u say that damians narrative is written as a child abuse one? like there are definitely many allusions to it but its also not as explicit as say, cassandra or rose. like how much of it would u chalk up to comic world dynamics and how much to actual abuse? also would u consider jason to also be a case of this?
Oh I have very strong opinions about the role of abuse in Damian’s narrative. It’s absolutely there, and the effects are staggeringly large. There is no doubt in my mind that the league was an abusive environment, and I can’t justify some of the things Bruce did either.
I think I would say the same thing for Jason, if not quite as strongly. I definitely think that some of the things that happened to Jason as a child shaped his story later on, but less of those were abuse than outside circumstances. The n52 takes a different track on that one, I think, but I don’t put much stock in that characterization.
Anonymous said: has jason forgiven bruce for not killing joker? if so, what made him?
Unlikely. They get along better these days, but I would argue that comes from poor characterization of Bruce, not an actual resolution process.

The Great Tory Terror
Tumblr media
If you’ve been following this election and are not completely terrified at the prospect of another 5 years of Tories, then there is something completely wrong with you. Oh no, I’m not exaggerating; there must be something actually wrong with you if you look at the Tories and say “well they get my vote”. Whether its a compassion deficiency or just general ignorance, something isn’t right with you. Get it checked out. Consult a doctor while we still have them.
Do I sound alarmed? No shit! What, you thought this was going to be happy fun times? Oh blowing this out of proportion am I? Well let me break this down as much as possible.
Tory Track Record
Life under the Tories is like an endless boxing match between an enraged gorilla and a crippled, blind 5 year old. There are 4 types of people in this scenario. There are those who are the child - severely outmatched and outgunned, with absolutely no hope in sight of surviving let alone fighting back. There are those who watch from the sidelines - some cheering, some howling with pity. There are those who are the referee - trying to actually stop the onslaught by doing everything in their democratic power to fight back; and there are those who are the Gorilla - we call them Tories.
You see, Tories don’t give a shit. About what? Ha ha, does it matter. Tories don’t give a flying fuck about anything. They are husks. Empty shells posing as people that perpetually seek to fill their internal voids by taking. Taking what? anything and everything. Money, jobs, skills, education, sometimes even lives. Oh I’m not accusing them of murder, they just help. At their core, Tories have one single goal: to marginalise and even sometimes eradicate anything that isn’t them. They’re rich, so the poor have to go. They’re under private healthcare, so get rid of the NHS. They’ve never had to worry about employment or anything else, so those that can’t afford education or struggle to be employed, they’re just under achievers and have to be demonised.
A Tory’s greatest weapon is abhorrance. The closest adjective I have to describe how horrifyingly malicious this is is ‘evil’. Tories teach you to hate. Hate everyone. Like a cancer they spread their viewpoints onto the masses. Hate foreigners, hate pensioners, hate the working man, hate doctors, hate teachers, hate the impoverished, hate them all and then hate some more. Tories have done this since day one. Every Tory government in some way shape of form has used hatred of others to win support. “Why should you help others? What did they ever do for you? Why should you pay for someone who can’t work? You’re a hard worker, so why should they get the money you earned?” They pump this shit out constantly and it works, and in the worst cases it creates a belief of “if it doesn’t happen to me, it doesn’t happen at all”.
Because the thing is people suffer under the Tories. Tory rule leads to cuts, leads to food banks, leads to zero hour contracts, leads to tuition fees and more. People suffer under the Tories, but the pre-installed abhorrance is the masterstroke. Right when your anger is about to boil over into taking action, the Tories swoop in and tell you who to blame. “Oh, your skill and trade is dying out? Blame the EU. You’re struggling to get a job, or an appointment with your GP? Well that’s immigration for you. You think crime is on the rise and the police are useless? Well that’s the youths of today - they expect handouts daily and when they don’t get it they commit crimes. No, no, no, it isn’t our fault. We didn’t outsource your skills to other nations because it was cheaper for us - the billionaires. We haven’t been dismantling the healthcare system or discouraging doctors - forcing them to strike. We haven’t been cutting funds to services countrywide. Don’t blame us, blame them!”
And people lap it up, because of course they do. This is bad enough as it is, but why then is this election seemingly more nightmarish than ever. Two reasons. One of them is Brexit.
The Problem with Brexit
Tumblr media
On May 18th 2017, ITV held a debate where the leaders of each party stood on stage and argued their case. I hate these. All it is is bickering half the time and the stage is too full for any coherent point to be made. But even so, two people didn’t attend. Jeremy Corbyn and Theresa May. Now before you scoff and sneer at Corbyn, it’s worth noting he didn’t attend because Theresa had already pulled out. Had Corbyn gone on that stage without her, he would have been public enemy number 1 and would have received a royal bollocking from everyone else there. Why? Because he’s the opposition, the one closest to fighting back against May, and of course he wouldn’t have done enough - no matter what he argued. The worst thing about this is the Tories would get off scot free. Since they wouldn’t be there, they’d happily sit back and watch as their main threat is taken down live on television - plummeting Corbyn’s public opinion. So not attending was a smart move on Corbyn’s part, and had Theresa turned up, I reckon he’d have been there, but what was Theresa’s excuse?
Let me make something perfectly clear: Theresa May did not attend because she is a coward - like all Tories, really. Having been in power for 7 years now, the conservatives couldn’t even turn up to defend their actions. “Oh but Theresa hasn’t even been in charge for that long, so your point is invalid” oh I’m sorry, was David Cameron an alien from outer space, not affiliated with the Tories at all? Are we voting for one person in the election or the party they’re a part of? Theresa might only have been in charge for some 9 months or so now, but it has been a conservative government for 7 years (yes, I’m including the coalition because that was Tory lite, diet Tory if you will). If she’s part of that government, leader or otherwise, that’s the record she’s defending.
And she didn’t have the balls to turn up. Oh but that didn’t stop the official Conservative Twitter account from tweeting about the debate.
Tumblr media
Oh yeah. Didn’t have the balls to turn up but from the comfort of your safe space you feel you can just commentate and criticise, do you? If you’re that passionate about another party’s failings, TURN UP AND DEBATE THEM, but if you’re too spineless to do that, then sit down and kindly shut the fuck up.
This is what I’m getting at. Theresa May and the Tories are weak. Not in numbers, nor in the polls, but in character. They are weak, spineless human beings. They’re the bullies in the school yard who are all mouth when you’re alone and they’re surrounded by mates, but put them one and one and watch how suddenly quiet they become. Weak. Utterly pathetic and weak.
And some of you think they’re the ones to get us out of the EU?
Look, I don’t care if you’re a leaver or a remainer. I don’t care if you want hard brexit or soft brexit or no brexit; but knowing that this is the character of the conservative party, do you really think they’re the chosen ones to take on Brussels? 26 vs 1. That’s the reality here, folks. Doesn’t matter what you think is right, or for the best, the reality is it’s Us versus the EU in a web of complicated negotiations. To even see daylight at the end of this we need the best, and Theresa certainly isn’t that. “Oh but what about Corbyn, you think he’s any better?” I’ll take my bloody chances, mate! Corbyn’s actually talking about policies to do with Britain. The EU is there of course, but he’s not running an election on it. Unlike someone else I could name.
Right now Theresa and her merry band of nitwits are all touting the same rhetoric - “strong and stable”. Thing is, they used the exact same rhetoric at the 2015 election and look where we are now. Food banks on the rise, NHS crumbling, and we’re leaving the EU with absolutely no idea of what lies around the corner. This is supposed to be strong and stable? Christ. Quite frankly I can’t see things getting any worse with Labour.
Also, there’s nothing strong or stable about holding a snap election after months of denial, right after triggering article 50. Don’t know if you know this, Theresa, but this is OUR time we’re wasting here. The EU will gladly just wait this out. But us? We’ve got 2 years, less than that now, to have a deal figured out with the EU. If we don’t have one:
Tumblr media
Point is, we’re on a deadline. We haven’t got the precious time to piss about, and we’re dossing around with elections?! So yeah, strong and stable aren't the words coming to my mind when I think about you or your government, Theresa. Incompetent and delusional are closer.
I have zero faith in this government as it is, but they also want the hard Brexit route, claiming its the will of the people. Even if you voted leave, hard Brexit is not what you want. Even if you think it is, it isn’t. It will isolate us completely and leave us with nothing. It has the potential to plunge Britain into a bloody depression, and no, this isn’t project fear. At a time when the world is at its most global, being isolated is national suicide. We will have very little, and we’ll have no help. “Well at least we won’t be in the EU anymore” What’s that, you’ve got a headache? Well let me decapitate you. Sure you’ll be a little on the dead side, but hey, at least your headache’s gone. Long story short, if you think the Tories will get the best deal for Britain and - by proxy - you, you are severely mistaken.
So Brexit is a massive chasm of shit to get through, but there is also another haunting thing the Tories have that is somehow equally as frightening.
The Monstrous Manifesto
Tumblr media
Despite primarily running this election on buzzwords and Brexit, the Tories do actually have some policies to go along with it. Yeah, it’s most of the same. Cut this, add that. She hasn’t put down “kill all the poor” yet, so that’s a plus; but as you scroll through it, more and more policies start to get scary.
For example, the Tories want to decide what you can or can’t say on the internet. Even if you’re thinking this isn’t full blown authoritarian yet, it’s the thin end of the wedge, and as I’ve already said, I don’t trust the Tories at all. Do not think they will have self-control. They will take as much as they can get away with, and if we’re out of the EU, that’ll be a lot. It’s in moments like these that remind me of how everyone criticises PC culture.
George Carlin once said “political correctness is fascism with a smile” and people have lauded that ever since. “How dare you tell me what I can or cannot say, that’s fascism” is the aggregate response to PC culture, but I think a lot of people don’t understand what fascism actually is. In regards to free speech, fascism is like the perfect Tory - it doesn’t give a shit. See, a fascist state can arrest you for speaking your mind. You can face actual punishment for having a different opinion from those in power, or worse, you can be killed. Alarming? You’re damn right it is. PC culture isn’t fascism unless it becomes law to arrest or kill racists for being racist. PC respects free speech, it just asks that you’re not a dick about it. You face no actual punishment for being a bigot or just being an all around piece of garbage - so stop comparing PC culture to fascism, especially when real fascism can just waltz into power with a breath of “strong and stable”.
Other elements of the manifesto include needing ID to vote. On the surface it makes okay sense, but one look across the pond and you’ll see how in the hands of the right-wing this will lead to problems. Tories already despise the poor and the young. They’ll never give 16 year olds the vote because JESUS they’ve been shitting on the young all their lives. Tuition fees are more than ever a joke now, and don’t even think of owning your own property you young bastards, we wouldn’t want you to aspire now, would we. Voter ID has the potential to lead to voter suppression. No matter what ID you bring, it might not qualify to vote. They’ll say it’s to fight voter fraud, but the reality is they simply don’t want certain people to vote; and since they’ll have our internet data, they’ll know just who to keep out.
Sorry if it’s all a bit tin-foil-hat right now. I’ll admit, we’re seemingly a long way from that, and maybe I am scaremongering, but ask if I think it’s beyond the Tories and my answer is a profound “Nope!” This is exactly in line with the way they do things. They’re essentially dictators living in a democracy, so much so that the longer they stay in power, and the fewer checks and balances they have, the less of a democracy we actually live in.
Right now, the manifesto isn’t even a manifesto. It’s not trying to win votes. Nothing in there will sway non-Tories, even if their lives depended on it. The manifesto is unabashedly brutal on all fronts because they do not think they can lose. Tories are typically arrogant as it is, but this is the worst I’ve ever seen them.
Don’t know what I mean? How about the t’wat Tory candidate for wakefield openly showing contempt for working class people in his constituency because, apparently, if you go to Costa coffee, you’re fair game:
Tumblr media
He said this for the world to see, on Twitter, because he feels he can’t lose. What about conservatives with a platform calling underprivileged people with tragic pasts liars or lazy:
Tumblr media
Then of course there’s Theresa herself, who is so unbelievably out of touch she says this and thinks nothing of it:
Tumblr media
Just say “let them eat cake” and be done with it. Being employed isn’t a miracle cure for all life’s problems and this goes doubly so under Tory rule.
This is another reason why Theresa didn’t turn up to debate. She feels so confident in victory that she thinks she doesn’t have to try. That’s how little regard she has for you. You aren’t even worth the effort to win over. They think they are unstoppable, and its a despairing thought the think they might be right.
So in summary: the Tories hate you. They hate what you love; they hate what you hate; and they in no way want what you want. They can’t be trusted. No amount of buzzwords will change that. Like the vampires on the doorstep asking sweetly to be invited in, it doesn’t mean they won’t drink your blood as soon as they get chance. They’re leeches in every way. They’re cowards. They’re spineless, pathetic, and weak. They’re out-of-touch, closeted fascists who want to do all in their power to keep you in the stone age, and if they win this election, they’ll have nothing to stop them.
On June 8, I don’t care who you are; where you live; what you want - for Brexit or otherwise - just don’t vote Tory. Vote tactically to keep them out of your your constituency and reduce their majority. Or don’t. Either way, just don’t vote Tory.
Don’t do it.
“Oh politicians are all the same” No, they’re really not. Not this time.
Vote, and do not vote Tory.
If you do vote Tory, you’re everything I just described above.
So don’t.
DON’T VOTE TORY!
