It could be easy to think that you two have a matching personality for how Ai always acts in public, but the reality is that you two are quite the opposite, Ai isn't really optimistic and cheerful, she just put a facade for everyone when deep down she is filled with insecurities and saddness
Ai actually like a lot your personality and is a little envy that all that cheerful attitude is natural for you, but at the end she likes it, and having a relationship with you give her the opportunity to stay with you all she can
Ai end up learning to imitate your own cheerful and optimistic personality, taking a few quirks of you and adding them to her facade, trying to play a even better role as an perfect idol for her fans, but deep down she feels a little flustered because this way she can feel you closer (specially since for her work you two can't be together much time or even just make public your relationship)
Honestly, Ai likes you more than she could understand or even admit, your cheerful attitude is the complete oposide from what she truly feels, you are what se doesn't have, what she doesn't feel, and thanks to your relationship she is slowly learning new pleseant feelings, feeling of happiness and love
You are kinda what Ai needed on her life, she is surrounded by pressure from her work, envy and mistery, but you are so natural and loving, your smiles are never fake and your optimism came from the botton of your heart, and she can't help but feel fascinated, is something completely refreshing to her usual enviroment, it makes her heart skip a beat sometimes because of how real you are with all of this, or whenever she remember that this person she admires and loves so much loves her in return, and loves her for real
Ai feels like the way you see the world is kinda childish, she knows a world too diferent from the one you seem to know, Ai's life is surrounded by pressure, insecurities, she is exposed to harsh coments and claims on her person, asking to be more and more, even herself is a lie, the Ai the world knows is a facade, while you see the world with brightness, your eyes sees beauty and hope in everything, always saying that even if today was a bad day tomorrow can be a better day. Ai can't help but think you are amusing and silly, but that doesn't stop from liking the way you see the world
Ruby Hoshino
Ruby tent to be more cheerful and optimistic, even a little childish, so your personalities normally just match with each other, understanding each other in their view of life
Since Ruby wants to be an idol is more probably that you two will have to keep your relationship as a secret, still with your personalities matching you two can easily be seen as best friends if you don't make too obvious your relationship. What, at the end of the day, isn't too wrong, you two can easily considere your relationship as best friends and lovers
Your cheerful attitude can either be loved or be hated for your friends, because whenever you two are together that attitude just multiplies, for example Kana gets easily annoyed (specially if you are being affectionate) while Mem-cho kinda like it, constantly just matching your own energy and end up be like a group of caotic teenagers ready to eat the world. In the other hand, Aqua isn't too bothered by it, he just likes seeing his sister happy, but will make sure you don't mean any harm to her or that your stupidity blindful optimism doesn't lead you two to troubles
As much Ruby is optimistic and childish she may not be as much as you are, and there are a lof of things she admires of you, your great view of life is something of that, she does tries to don't think the worst of people but for what happened to her mother and for being in the media she is exposed to criticism, hate and even people who tries to make her see bad on everyone, so having you is quite refreshing, your great view of life lead her to have one too, influenced by your own she tries to see things in a bright light too (much to Aqua's annoyance because he is trying really hard to protect her sister, and this just trigger his overprotectiveness since he is the literal opposite)
Even in moments that she is more calm and wants just to relax she likes talking with you and asking for your opinion, truly interested on hearing it and discovering more of your point of view of diferents things, is probably that at some point she will also ask you what you think about what happened to her mother (without telling you who is in reality)

2B feels troubled by her relasionship with you just because it brings her so much joy but sometimes she feels like she doesn't deserve it
At the start it was dificult for you two to get together for 2B's insistance that feelings are forbidden for a YoRHa unit, but no matter how much she used to repeat it that would never stop her from falling in love with you, deep down she always knew that not feeling anything it was imposible, specially with you around. It took a while but at the end 2B accepted her feeling and finally accepted to be in a relationship with you
2B feels completely fascinated by your personality, even when most of the time she is serious and even just focused on her duty she just can not be infuenced by your cheerful attitude, she doesn't admit it much but she like having you around when she go out of the resistance camp because she likes the way you see the world, even when she seem like she isn't paying attention or that is too focus on her surroundings she is actually paying attention to what you say or your reactions, she loves just hearing you talks or see you whenever you find something new or something catched your attention (and if 9S is there with you two is even more fascinating! your personalities match really well, but sometimes is too much for 2B's heart)
Even when she doesn't look like it, 2B sees a lot of herself on you, your way to see the world one so hopeful and beautiful, you find the world fascinating and even with all the dangers you always thought it was a world worth of living on, and that is something that goes straight to 2B'S heart because, even when she doesn't feel exact the same, she also things that despite the danger and the reason why she was created, despite what YoRHa was doing to her, she also thought the life was worthy to living because she has you and 9S. She normally doesn't say much about your way of thinking, and if you ask she normally answer that she doesn't know or isn't sure because she doesn't want to tell you all that troubles her heart, but your way to see the world really brings her a lot of hope
2B grows really protective over you, she loves you with all her heart and, honestly, she thinks that you are more that she could even ask for, even sometimes feels like she doesn't deserve you (mainly for her truly purpose), so she tries to overcome her insecurities and determinated for her love she had promised to herself to protect you and your bright heart to all cost, no matter if you are a android or human, even if you are a machine she will protect you, always with the hope of having a peaceful life with you, someday somehow

-A Space for the Unbound: chill fetch quests in a small town in rural Indonesia, finish your summer bucket list with your gf, pet cats, dive into the subconsciousnesses of your neighbours!
-Ender Lilies: metroidvania platformer with some tight controls like Hollow Knight, gorgeous artwork and music, you play as Lily, a young amnesiac priestess trying to purify the spirits of the dead and stop the plague ridden rain that won't stop falling, you're small and weak but you recruit different spirits to fight with you but it never feels overwhelming or bloated, really enjoyed it
-Signalis: survival horror as an android looking for her gf, she made a promise and she's going. to. fulfil. it. Dystopian future in space with lots of good old rusty machine body horror, strange senses of time and memory and there's some puzzles in there too.
-Sunless Sea: Victorian London was moved underground by bats. Don't worry about it. Go sail the seas and try and turn a profit without losing your mind from the Horrors ^.^ (deceptively a lot of reading in this, plays like a management sim meets VN)
-Omori: 4 years ago Something happened. Omori dreams his days away in his room, carefully not thinking about that Something. Some of the game is in his colourful dream worlds and some out in the real world. Fights are always tinged with emotional rock paper scissors as how you, your friends and enemies feel will affect the fight! He's about to move house and an old friend comes knocking on the door...

-Va11-Hall-A: I...don't know whether to put a VN under games or books so I'm putting it between the two. You're a barista in a cyberpunk kinda world, you listen to patrons while making them drinks and chat. (It's chill but sometimes gets pretty heavy and has a lot of mature topics in it for the record.)
-Deathless by Cathrynne M. Valente: an alternate history book that has one foot in the Russian Revolution and the other in fairytale. Marya Morevna marries Koschei the Deathless, and goes back to his kingdom. She makes friends with various folklore creatures, checks in on her sisters who all married birds and her old and new lives begin to collide.
-The Locked Tomb trilogy by Tamsyn Muir: sci-fi necromancers vie to become the next right bony hand of God, first book is a murder mystery, second is a grim tale by a survivor of the first but something is Wrong and you know it is, third is an oddly domestic political tragedy and I loved them all so much, cannot recommend the audiobooks in particular enough (as the first is a murder mystery, all the voices the narrator does are both incredibly well done but let me pinpoint exactly who was speaking even when I couldn't remember their names, also she voiced Daniella in Haunting Ground!)
-The Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch: small orphan becomes a conman in fantasy Italy. Ends up being drawn into some political intrigue and fucks around finds out, frequently!
-Children of Time: Spiders! Once upon a time an arrogant scientist decided to infect monkey with a virus that would encourage rapid evolution within cooperative species but...it reaches jumping spiders. They have their own form of sign language with vibrational tappy patterns against the ground and wiggling their palps! Scientist's consciousness has melded with an AI and is waiting for her monkeys to become intelligent enough to contact her
Misc:
-Dungeon Meshi: do you want to learn about the ecosystem of a dungeon while also figuring out how to cook the creatures inside and watch a guy with a monster special interest live his absolute best life? Yeah you do! (I'm really enjoying this rn so ye)
-Mabel: podcast about a home health carer for an old lady who's only living relative, Mabel, is missing. Anna, the nurse, starts leaving her voicemails like a diary and slowly gets drawn into family secrets, fairy logic and goes exploring places she shouldn't (this one does not shy away from heavy topics including serious child abuse and its effects so if that's not for you then leave this one be)

The shit happening in the Nier community right now is absolutely wild.
For those not in the know: someone (a person with rudimentary English skills) asked on the Reddit why his friend couldn’t find “the church.” People asked what they’re talking about. Person posts a cell phone picture of one of Nier Automata’s main characters standing in a room no one has ever seen. People don’t believe this but they ask them for a video. Next they post a phone video of their TV showing them entering a secret door in an area no one has ever found before, but cuts before it goes anywhere. People ask for better footage. Person posts a PS4 capture video of them running from the beginning of the area to the door and then down into an area no one’s ever seen, complete with moving geometry, but still cuts short before revealing where a corridor ends, allegedly because their “storage space was low.”
People are now losing their minds because what is being shown is currently impossible to duplicate with mods for the PC version, and as best as can be determined the version they’re playing is a PS4 unpatched 1.0 version.
The next video the person posts shows them entering a large church with pews and several visual references to the previous game in the series, Nier Replicant, which recently got a remake. There is an enemy in the room that triggers when a chest is opened, an enemy from that game that appears nowhere in Nier Automata mind you, as well as a set of birds that ask a riddle in Japanese that is lifted directly from Replicant, as well as much of the church itself, it turns out.
So either this is a modded doing some wild stuff that no one else has figured out yet and which would revolutionize the mod scene for likely two different games, or it’s a dev doing an ARG to drum up hype for something, perhaps the upcoming Switch port of Automata (my personal guess). Given the slow and deliberate nature of how things have been revealed and the downright silly nature of some of the person’s gameplay, I might even be convinced it’s game director Yoko Taro doing this whole bit himself.
God do I love this. Absolutely bugfuck. Can’t wait for more.

If you could give 9s confidently sexy outfits like 2b can have what would you want them to look like?
Oooh that’s a fun question! Though I gotta be honest I’m not like…into 9S. He’s one of my favorite characters & Ig I do think he’s attractive but it’s not like "WISH HE WAS MINE!" That goes for all fictional characters I like where you could call it a crush? Or even if I think they look good in xyz outfit or art it doesn’t really mean I’m into them. Sorry that wasn’t your question but it’s a thing that's been on my mind 😅
Now for my extremely in depth answer that makes the first part seem like a lie!
Male silhouettes are very interesting to me because they’re so simple. I think a lot of designs phone it in and don't play around as much. You'll see a girl's outfit incorporating 35 fetishes, and then the guy has basic armor. Boooo!! Guys have attractive elements. They're just different. Anyway, 9S has some interesting things going on with his alt outfits especially that I like a lot.
My favorite is the Nier Reincarnation one
I like that you can see his arms pfft. I really like the shape of shoulders so I like when a male character design has a tight shirt and short sleeves like that. And the strip of skin showing on the arms is more creative than long sleeves. It’s like putting thigh highs on a girl instead of tights LOL Even the slouchy shorts play with his body shape a little. And is that a garter?! Nice...
Then, looking at two of his concept art outfits. The suspenders/body harness on B is really cool. I love body harnesses--especially like the ones those K pop boys wear. I keep a folder of outfit inspiration for my doll and a lot of it is pictures of K Pop boy outfits. I like what they do with chains on the hands and those half gloves. Admittedly I've always liked the aesthetic of bondage...
Then on C, I really like shorter shorts and bag strapped on his leg like hello??? There's some Fire Emblem cypher or comic art where they'd strap the tomes on the mage's legs and I'd always look at that like WOW!!
In his regular outfit, I like that he has a choker. Like why don't we put chokers on men more often? That's inspired.
Boots with heels are cool too! Like what Joker from P5 has.
I save a lot of gothic ouji/lolita pair outfits as well
To me the most interesting thing is the...effort. There's effort put into the masculine outfit. That's some beef I have with a lot of Rin and Len Kagamine outfits. It feels like they design Rin's & then slap shorts on it and say GET OVER HERE LEN without considering what would make Len look cool as a guy independently from Rin. (I am also a Len Kagamine fan)
I like to make fun of the Nier Automata pop up shop art. And this part is arguably more about how the character is drawn than the outfit itself but whatever.
This is from the Animate cafe, and I think they totally phoned it in on 9S. 2B feels over designed and not that great to me either. But just looking at 9S, what's he have? A basic suit with shorts? The tailcoat and sock garters are interesting but it's just...not doing anything for him. The shorts are giving little boy too. I know he always wears shorts but in this picture he doesn't feel equal to 2B. It's like hey 9S is here too!

Ngl a friend totally sent this art to me to make fun of how over designed their outfits are. But this is my favorite anime promo art with new outfits we've gotten so far because they put equal effort into 9S. And the outfits are so lolita. They're a mess...together.
Going back to the main point though, I like when effort is put into a guy's outfit. Thee sexiest thing to me is...trying.
And personal elements I like are: showing the upper arms, harnesses, chains, cool boots, and stuff in that realm. I think 9S could pull any of this off. I'd like to see him have an outfit with slouchy pants. Or like...shoulder or waist cutouts. Even on a really simple all black outfit that can be cool. Show a little skin! Give me something!
I think that's all! K pop, cyber/streetwear, and gothic fashion are big inspirations for me when dressing my 9S doll and that's my general direction with him. I see 9S drawn in boyish looks a lot, but I think that since I have so many precious anime sons who are literal children, I like thinking of 9S as more mature and kinda cool. Like he could be hot...if he wanted

@cobblepottery Tell me about the nier church saga, I saw it in passing on Reddit but I don’t understand it
This gets its own post because it’s very long and very special.
Basically there’s a user on reddit named sadfutago who just started posting a month ago, and all of their posts were them writing like a clueless kid trying to ask for help on how you get to the church in the Copied City area of Nier Automata, because they somehow stumbled on the path to it, but their friend couldn’t find it. This confused the hell out of everyone who tried to help, because there isn’t a church in the Copied City, did they get lost trying to find Adam’s boss arena or something? And this back and forth went on for a bit, with them providing cellphone photos of the area they were talking about and a video of them running down the path to a hidden door in a wall before going silent.
Jump to earlier this week, when sadfutago returned with a new higher quality video of them opening the secret door and jumping down a hidden path, which made everyone lose their goddamn minds because that area doesn’t exist in the actual game. The wall with the secret door doesn’t have a door in it in any shipped copy, and multiple attempts of mucking around with debug mode and boundary breaking have confirmed there’s nothing behind that wall. So nobody knows how this kid found this door that should not exist leading to a ladder that should not exist leading to an eldritch hallway that should not exist. Importantly, pretty much all the modders in the scene have confirmed that nobody has the tools and ability needed to make a mod of this scale - the most that people can do is texture and model swaps, not the construction of entirely new areas.
And then the next day sadfutago returned again with a bombshell - video footage of what’s at the end of this Hallway That Shouldn’t Exist. There is indeed a church in whatever the hell sadfutago is playing, with a cutscene that plays on entrance, and it is filled to the brim with callbacks and references to Nier Gestalt/Replicant. There’s a dead body of a young girl with a lunar tear flower on an altar who is clearly supposed to be Yonah, a blocky entity (nicknamed “Bloby”) who appears to be a standin for the Shadowlord, props of Devola and Popola’s staffs on the ground on both sides of the altar, a birdbath from outside of the Shadowlord’s castle, and a treasure chest that requires 9S to hack into the mainframe to unlock. This made this entire community lose their minds, because this area doesn’t exist in the game and should be impossible to mod, so what the hell is this?
And then last night we got two new updates - the first one has sadfutago return to the area as 9S to hack into the chest. Unlocking the chest brought up Yonah’s medical records, which can also be found in the library of the Tower area. It also aggro’ed Bloby, kicking off a fight with an enemy that only shows up during 9S’s mental breakdown in Automata. Sadfutago ate shit and spent the next couple hours trying to beat the fight, with everybody on reddit and discord loudly cheering them on. This led into the latest update, where safutago successfully beat Bloby and started to investigate the birdbath. Investigating the birdbath brought up JP text that translates to the riddle you have to answer to get into the Shadowlord’s castle in Gestalt/Replicant, which safutago supposedly can’t read Japanese and got the answer wrong. If they come back with a new update, we’ll probably see what happens when they get the answer right.
And that’s the cliffhanger we’re stuck at right now. We’ve got a whole supposed secret area that doesn’t exist in any shipped copy of the game, and no idea who sadfutago actually is (since they’re probably not really a Canadian kid who got lost), so everyone is just theorizing and memeing and going bananas over just what the hell this could actually be. There are currently three theories for what’s going on:
Sadfutago is a real person who stumbled on an otherwise dummied-out easter egg. Speculation was that safutago had an extremely early unpatched copy of the game, perhaps even one meant for developers, and stumbled on content that was cut from later versions of the game. This one has grown increasingly unlikely over the past few days as people have poked and prodded and found nothing in Nier Automata proper, and most of the explanations for how this can be true basically revolve around the implausible conclusion of “sadfutago is the one person on the planet with the special copy that has this”. It lingers because it’s the premise of Whatever The Hell This Is and People Want To Believe, but it’s safe to say this is most likely debunked.
Sadfutago is a fake and this is all an elaborate hoax mod. You’d think this would be the case, but as I said earlier, all of the modders have confirmed that nobody has the tech needed to mod something of this scale. The bits of recycled content are a bit suspect, but everything else is far too intricate for Joe Schmoe on the internet to build in their garage, especially given that cutscene intro. If it is a mod, then this is the most advanced mod ever made for the game, and the release of whatever the hell the modder is using to build it would revolutionize the scene.
Sadfutago is a fake and this is all an elaborate marketing ARG built by the game devs for some reason. This is the current most common theory as to what the hell is going on, given that the devs over at Squeenix and Platinum and so on are the only people who have the tools to build something like this. All of sadfutago’s clips end on cliffhangers designed to get the audience to rush to the comments and beg sadfutago to take xyz action to proceed and find the church’s secrets, and it’s definitely got people talking. Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito have also been playing coy about the whole affair, with (paraphrased) tweets like “Check my profile if you want to know the answer to what this hallway is! (and my profile says I am not allowed to answer questions, go ask my publisher)” and “Eternal mystery...”, which lends some credence to “oh the creators are Up To Something”. The hope with this theory is that it’s going to lead up to some spicy new announcement, like a new Nier game or more Drakengard/Nier remakes, which would be extremely cool if true
Note that basically all endings here are happy endings - if it’s a real easter egg, then sadfutago just found something really really cool. If it’s a hoax mod, then this’ll open the floodgates for some truly bananas mods. And if it’s an ARG leading to something big, then well, that’s its own special treat. I’m so sorry I’m messaging you so much, theres just so many things to talk about and it’s exciting (we just have so many similar interests 😭)
When I finished Nier Automata even the start up screen made me sad, even despite the hope of a different ending I was still sad. I have Nier Replicant on my backlog but I keep avoiding it. The vibes of the Nier series is just sooo!! I even tried playing the gacha for a little but I couldn’t keep up. I wanna play Drakengard 3 so bad, Zero seems like the exact kind of woman I love, but my ps3 might be dead 😔
If I could recommend some games, I think you’d like Caligula Effect. The story is pretty simple but it really shines when it comes to the characters. And since you like horror, have you ever heard or played Death Mark? It’s a great supernatural visual novel with miserable looking men.

They said this game would play in a post-apocalyptic world. It didn't look like that at first, but I guess now it makes sense. Just makes you wonder what people survived and why? Why did we not get infected, for example?

Do you know what that means? If you get killed here, you will have to start this whole thing all over again.

AI: The Somnium Files
I picked up AI: The Somnium Files on a whim recently, when I was desperate for something to play and didn’t have the budget to buy something new. I purchased it from the PlayStation store a few months back on super sale and completely forgot about it. I had no expectations, and ended up really enjoying it!
Let me clear the air by saying I’m a huge Danganronpa fan. Despite their problems, I’ve always really enjoyed the series’ style and mystery solving mechanics. I figured AI: The Somnium Files, also developed and published by Spike Chunsoft, would be up my alley.
Differing from the high school setting of the Danganronpa games, the protagonist of AI is an adult man (probably in his early 30s) who’s a detective for the Tokyo police. His name is Kaname Date. He lost all of his memories and one of his eyes six years ago, and the overarching plot of the game is figuring out how and what happened.
One of the big gags of the game is that Date is obsessed with porn, and that’s often used during the combat sequences. It’s often brought up by the game’s female characters (Mizuki, his child roommate and Aiba, his AI in particular). I always found the use of this humor uncomfortable, especially when being mentioned by a minor. I expected it though, as the Danganronpa series is riddled with uncomfortable, out-of-place sexual humor as well. If that’s to your taste though, you’ll probably enjoy this game.
Another problematic stance this game takes is in its characterization of Mama. Mama is a fat trans woman who’s old friends with Date and runs a local bar. She’s an informant, so you visit her a handful of times throughout the game. She’s motherly and kind, and a bit flirty. Unfortunately, the other characters in the game are regularly transphobic and fatphobic towards her. They refer to her as things like a “monster,” or a “giant grape.” Mama is happy and doesn’t mind, but it’s uncomfortable seeing how she’s treated, even by her old friend. I look forward to the day when Japanese games aren’t like this anymore. My patience towards their use of fat queer people as a joke is gone.
I found a some of the other characters to be compelling, and was always excited to see more of them. Mizuki was very well acted, and I liked her standoffish nature. Iris, a young internet idol, was also always a joy to see. Date’s boss, Iris’s mother Hitomi, and Ota Matsushita (a fan of Iris’s) + his family were also all fun to learn more about.
An important gameplay mechanic is psyncing. Most of the game is clicking through several different locations to look for clues and interview characters. Standard point-and-click mechanics. Psyncing is where they switch things up. Date works for a special unit of the police force called ABIS. Their purpose is to get information, no matter what, and they have a special psync machine that allows them to do so. It puts the suspect to sleep, and lets the officer enter their dreams for 6 minutes to look for clues pertaining to the investigation. During these sections, you run around as Aiba in the body of a young woman.
I never found the psyncing to be much fun. They’re kind of like puzzle rooms, but nonsensical. The option you need to pick to progress is never clear or linear, and you’re timed in the rooms, so making too many mistakes can be punishing. I often had to replay the psync sections a few times to get them correct. Sometimes I had even figured out the solution, but the inputs kept taking too long and forcing me to restart. At best I found the psyncs neutral or tolerable, at worst a frustrating nuisance.
The best part of the AI: The Somnium Files is its use of branching paths. I ran into my first “ending” around 5-6 hours in, and was shocked that I had learned so little. The game encouraged me to play through again, starting from a branching segment from earlier on in my playthrough. I did so, and the differences were WILD. AI is kind of like Nier: Automata, in the way that you really have to see every ending through to solve the case and get the true ending. It was super worth it! There were so many fun twists and turns. I liked seeing how much Date’s relationships changed with each playthrough. In one path he and Mizuki were extremely close, in another they couldn’t even look at each other.
Ultimately, I had great time with this game. I flew through the 25ish hours in about two weeks, which is fast for me. The mystery kept me guessing until the very end. I also enjoyed the soundtrack! I definitely want to check out the sequel from last year, Nirvana Initiative next time it’s on sale. I’d recommend AI: The Somnium Files to any anime mystery fans! There is fun to be had here!

Hello! I'm just two chapters into Ronin for now but I like it a lot! It feels so different from other Star Wars books I've read (which I think was a bit intended ^^). I wanted to ask you if you listened to, or had some specific music/song/soundtrack in mind when you wrote it? I love reading with music, and I wondered if you knew something that would "match" the particular tone of this book.

I generally need instrumentals because voices are too distracting. At times I also just need white noise and NOTHING ELSE. But I did listen to some music for Ronin, especially when blocking out beats in a scene.
I often came back to the Mushishi OST (there's like over four hours in total, if you look for it) for general ambience + more shallowly, for action sequences, the extremely cool Vanguard album by Jo Blankenburg (he does, essentially, movie trailer music).
Occasionally I'd stray into Sekiro's OST, and I played around with Ghost of Tsushima for a bit too. I almost always fall back on Nier: Automata's OST + dipped into the Friends at the Table: Partizan soundtrack from time to time as well.

Hi! My friend and I recently played D:BH and when we dipped a toe into the fandom, we found a LOT of Reed900. That confused us, because we hadn't even seen RK900 after our first playthrough and Reed seemed the opposite of nice. I finally watched your film and I really admire all the work you put into it, but I still don't understand. I love hearing people talk about the things they love, though, so could you explain what it is about RK900 that motivated you to make a whole-ass movie?
I've been in this fandom since literally day one, so I witnessed the origins of Reed900 and its growth personally (at least English speaking fandom. Russian fandom could be quite different). When DBH first came out, HankCon was definitely the dominant ship and primary reason we were all here, with some love going to Connor/Markus and Simon/Markus as well. A lot of people were non shipper fans. And you also had a handful of Connor/Gavin folks but no one gave Reed much development for the first 7 or 8 weeks. And at this time we all saw RK900 as evil. No one had any real "soft" headcanons for him. I remember seeing the Harrison Ford meme go around at that time where Connor was "Baby boy, baby" and RK900 was "Evil."
However, two things happened that changed this. One, a couple people started pointing out some of Gavin's dumb charm, like not being able to say "fuck" properly and winking with both eyes, which softened us to him. On top of that, as Hankcon casefics were written more and more, it started to become common to have Gavin as a background character at the DPD. And in many of these Hankcon fics, there was a subplot about how RK900 showed up and became Gavin's partner (often those stories were from Connor's POV and dealt with his feelings of meeting an upgrade of himself). Coupled with this, a lot of artists like Don Lemefo were making extraordinary beautiful art of Reed900 together, entertaining the concept of them being partners.
The fandom started to agree rather quickly that RK900 and Reed being partnered just made sense - and to me, I think this stems from the HankCon arc in the base game. Take a detective droid like Connor and have the asshole cop learn to love him - but Reed900 inverts many of the Hankcon tropes quite intentionally.
As more fics were written, people gave Gavin the habit of smoking to be "the opposite" of Hank's drinking. They gave Gavin a cat to be the opposite of Hank's dog. Many times Gavin is shown as anxious to contrast with Hank having depression. And then, we kind of can't ignore the big sexy elephant in the room lol. In Reed900, the human detective is generally seen as the bottom, while in HankCon, the human is generally seen as the top (don't @ me, I am speaking in majorities, not absolutes). As for 900, he is often a harder version than Connor - more sarcastic, more "take no shit," more aggressive in his dynamic with his human. I once saw someone say Reed900 was invented to give Gavin a dom, and I can't really disagree with that - although D/s and BDSM fics for HankCon absolutely did exist (there's one called Scratch that comes to mind) Reed900 seemed a more organic outlet for that sort of expression, imo. The fics I saw for Reed900 at that time were much more extreme, much more masochistic, just generally kinkier than it's sister ship.
So Reed900 provides a similar attractive dynamic, but offers a different version of HankCon, and allows writers to start from day ONE of their meeting rather than having the baggage of canon to deal with. Very quickly they started to become of equal importance to the fandom as Hankcon was, often paired up together as sister ships in solidarity. Kind of a Goofus and Galiant double date, where HankCon were loving and doting and Reed900 were the old married couple who called each other "assholes." Of course over time, fandom can't resist fluff, so Reed900 evolved from its BDSM/hatesex roots and a few slow burns like Fuck Pride and Like A Light I'm Luring You, along with some more comedic fics like DPD, cemented the idea that Gavin and 900 could actually LOVE each other. Even in the case of slow burns that were still sexy, like No Strings Attached, the softer side of the ship rose to become what I feel is now the most widespread version of the boys in English speaking fandom. Fanon Gavin was also softer and usually given a lot more redemption and development compared to his canon origin.
It always confuses me when people tell me that DE is the only Reed900 they enjoy because "regular Reed900 is too abusive." I have not seen such a thing in YEARS at this point. The overwhelming majority of Reed900 content created in the past year and a half has been incredibly soft, and very similar to how they are portrayed in Evolution. I did not invent that - it was pulled from all of my experience in fandom. The only thing I can say is that Russian fandom seems to have still held on to the idea of RK900 as a dominant tank, because I get a lot of comments from them about how my Nines is too soft compared to their version of him.
Also regarding the name Nines - I first saw this used in a fic by TerminallyDepraved back in July 2018 or so. Richard was the most popular name at first (a joke of his nickname being "dick", because....Gavin), especially because Brandon McCauley used it in what was, at the time, the most visible Reed900 casefic/slow burn series. It was also the summer of a thousand names of 900 lol, as every damn fic had a different one back then. Kay, Ace, Alex, Conner, Oleg (wtf Russia), Conrad, Conan, Collin, and some just left it RK or R. Over time the Richard name kinda faded for English speakers (although Russia holds it high still) and Nines/RK are pretty much the main ones I've seen for some time. Nines took awhile to catch on, as it's the name of a character in Nier Automata as well and that was hard for some of us to reconcile, but eventually it stuck.
TLDR, why I personally love Reed900 is a whole other story that basically comes down to "I'm Gavin and I need a Nines" (which Austin essentially is for me lol). I love enemies to lovers, I love work partners, and I love the possibilities. HankCon started to wear on me after awhile when I felt like I was reading the same thing over and over, and I eventually fell out of it. I didn't ever get that fatigue with Gavin and Nines for whatever reason. I just love them, more than I hate any of the struggle of making films, so that's the short of it.
Bear in mind this is one person's POV of how the fandom evolved so it's not an absolute truth, especially outside of English fandom. I was primarily on Tumblr and AO3 at the time but things on Twitter Jericho and Discord were not on my radar and may have been different back then (Hankcon was probably a lot hornier on Twitter Jericho than it was on Tumblr, for example).
What you gotta understand about Reed900 fandom though is 1) it wasn't random, 2) it wasn't a fucking "har har crackship" like people dismiss it as and it barely even spent time as a "rarepair", and 3) even though it isn't canon, it is so rooted in fanon at this point that there's a lot for new folks to catch up on, lol. Sorry I'm on mobile and can't put this under a cut rn - hopefully it isn't too annoyingly long. 👀

Just some random thoughts that I couldn’t make into some elaborately constructed essay
My husband made a list that he converted to a spreadsheet of Games I Want To Play This Year. He’s been working through it slowly until the summer break came and then he proceeded to consume like 2 100hr games back to back, and then a couple 40hr games. Empowered by these accomplishments, he also burned his way through a couple CRPGs, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2.
So focused was he on getting through the games to check them off the list, it took him driving around with me to the doctor and Costco and such to actually take time out to reflect on the games he played.
We went to the hospital to get me in to see an Endocrinologist. Some specialists in Japan are so specialized they exist only at a hospital. So we show up before 11am, which is the end of the window when they accept new patients, and they get us up to the waiting area for the the doctor and we sit there for a couple hours. My husband spends this time to talk about Nier Automata. I couldn’t get him to stop. I couldn’t get him to focus on anything else. He was fixated on the game and the story and the genius of Yoko Taro. He didn’t like the game but he appreciated and respected it so much he didn’t want to give it a bad score.
He also played through Yakuza 7 and Dragon Quest 11. I had a good time with Yakuza 7. Dragon Quest 11 was fine as an entry into the traditional JRPG genre. But as the car rides continued, we continued to compare the games together, to talk about why we didn’t like DQ11′s third act and how it failed and the damage it did to the act two ending and stuff.
And then we take these thoughts to our friends. You guys have surely played this stuff we didn’t have the time, mind, energy, or money to play, right? Because they’re big gamer culture phenomena that we missed out on from being in Japan that you guys have taken part in. Right? Or at least you’re our friends and you’d wanna talk to us about this stuff even if you didn’t play the games.
Nope. Which means we only have each other to talk to. And that sucks. Because we have some pretty cool and interesting things to say.
I had an idea a long time ago, before my husband first went to Japan. We used to play Warframe and Dark Souls and such together. Because we were in two different states, we had to play online over some kind of VoIP. I had a pretty good connection/computer, so I thought maybe I should just stream our chats, our discussions of things such as his thoughts on Nier or our thoughts on the DQ11 story or the design of Legend of Legaia (which I kinda did) or any number of other thing that we started to talk about. Because we were talking about these things anyway and I got so tired of having no one to discuss them with.
But I guess that’s why we got married. We wanted these discussions and only found them with each other.
Anyway, the DQ11 Act 3, the like Special Edition S content that has a secret final boss with some tired Toriyama designs undoes all of the character progress from the original second act in favor of some kind of poorly constructed fix-it fic. Silent Protag has literally zero lines and its never made clear if he has his memories of what happened in the original timeline. Everyone gets their memories/powers without any of the incidents that caused them to earn those powers, such as Jade’s demon form or Rab’s spirit ball. Secret 8th party member whomst is my favorite has a bunch of character progression and shit and it’s all removed. It sucks. If the whole party was made to travel back, that would’ve been way better, so that the story of act two didn’t end up completely fucking retconned.
