Just watched A Field in England and now I'm wondering-

What is this sub-genre- this horror but let's be literary and metaphorical about it, Magical Realism for menTM, exploration of masculinity, courage, fate, and tragedy, descent into madness, historical fever dreams? Because whatever it is, I dig it. And A Field in England would go on the list along with The Lighthouse, Ravenous, The Seventh Seal, Aguirre, Brotherhood of the Wolf and of course the OG- AMC's The Terror.

I am generally a fan of Ben Wheatley’s horror films, especially the mushroom-centric folk horror of A Field in England and In the Earth. Those films, with feature lots of strobes and psychedelic imagery, aren’t for everyone, but Chris Bissette (Loot the Room) is fan. How do I know? Because those films of the key inspirations for Feast (2021), a system agnostic adventure zine.

The set-up is simple (but not straight forward). The PCs (and a lot of other people) have been “called” to the hexes of the forest. In the center of the wood is a stone monolith. Under that is a system of cave. Beneath that, something sleeps and wishes to wake, but to do so requires a ritual and the titular, ambiguous feast. The entity dreams, and uses (or maybe IS) the mycorrhizal network of plants and mushrooms and fungus to interact with human agents, compelling them through visions to complete the ritual. Everyone in the forest wants to be the one to do it, even though the cost is unclear.

And that’s it. From there, the adventure pretty much writes itself. The PCs are competing with all the other questionably sane people in the forest to complete the ritual (and get free of the entity’s influence). Nasty random encounters, hostile fungus and earthy horrors await. And that’s not even mentioning the necromancer. A grand old time.

Title - Flux of Time

Painted 29th and 30th March 2024

Acrylic, chalk pen, perm marker, and pencil

I'm really pleased with this considering it was made in just a few hours

(all of these blocks are 3.9ix3.9inches (or 10x10cm) and I struggle when it's a lot of detail in such a small space but I still like the dimension that I've managed to get despite the lack of colour.

I'm going to do what I normally do and give it a black border and write "I am my own man" around the border in chalk pen instead of writing it on this because I hate my handwriting and don't want to ruin it!

Will post WIP next.

folk horror uses elements of folklore to invoke fear in its audience. typical elements include a rural setting and themes of isolation, religion, the power of nature, and the potential darkness of rural landscapes. although related to supernatural horror films, many derive their horror from the actions and beliefs of people rather than explicitly supernatural elements; the primary focus of the stories is often upon naïve outsiders coming up against these forces.
