Pt 2 - The Gifts of Moominvalley
So here’s the translated diary entries, event summaries, and some mini-translations for year 1 Summer in the Moomin DS game!

Oh, there’s some really cute content in this one.
What is this? About the game and these posts

The Winter Party (Summer Year 1)
Too-Ticky told us something wonderful today. While we’re all hibernating in winter, everyone awake has a “Christmas Party”. Snufkin and everyone else in Moominvalley came to our Christmas party today and had a great time.
Friends are the most precious thing, aren’t they?
Oh this event is so precious. It opens with Too-Ticky dropping by Moominhouse for a chat (weirdly, talking about how busy she is with work?). While there, Moomin immediately pesters her with questions about winter. She tells him all about Christmas parties, and the Moomins are immediately intrigued and naturally want to take part. Despite it being the height of summer, they decide to just go ahead and throw one now anyway. Mamma and Little My set to work making food and decorations, Pappa sets off to chop down a fir tree, and Moomin goes out to invite everyone in town.
Unfortunately, as soon as you go out you discover Snufkin is nowhere to be found. Since he normally just paces around the same four feet by the river, this is very unusual. After you invite everyone, if you talk to everyone again Moomin will ask if they’ve seen Snufkin around, having no luck.
Moomin returns to Moominhouse, a bit despondent. He helps Little My with making decorations, but is clearly out of it, complaining that Snufkin has left for winter early. Little My responds with:
“Is his tent still there?” “Yes.” “Then he’s clearly coming back, you idiot.”
After looking up stuff about Christmas in Pappa’s library in order to decide where to put the tree (because just...common sense isn’t enough, I guess), Snufkin finally comes back. Moomin immediately rushes out to see him. Since this little exchange is very cute, here’s a link to a video of it, and I’m going to do a direct translation below:
Moomin: Welcome back Snufkin! Snufkin: Ah, Moomin… Moomin: Where did you go? Snufkin: I just went a little past the Lonely Mountains. I thought I might come up with a new tune while I was there. Snufkin: Did you need anything from me? Moomin: Well, um, Snufkin. Today we’re having a Christmas party at my house. You’ll come, won’t you, Snufkin? Snufkin: Christmas…? Snufkin: Moomin, you know Christmas is a winter holiday, right? Moomin: Yeah. But since we’re all hibernating in winter, we’ve never had a Christmas party before. So, we decided to try it now. Snufkin: Ah, I get it now. I’d be happy to attend. Moomin: ❤️ [no, really. He gets a little heart over his head]
Moomin then rushes off to invite the Fillyjonk and her children, coming up with the excuse that it’s a welcoming party for them so she’ll let the children attend. The family translate the three together, putting Pappa’s model boat on it, and one of Mamma’s roses for the stars, and everyone turns up for the party. It is extremely cute!
Just before this event, you also unlock the hemulen’s encyclopedia! He wants you to collect flowers, obviously. But he also gives you a flowerpot to grow flowers in your room, as well as a watercan and some tulip seeds to start you off.
The Shipwreck (Summer Year 1)
Something amazing happened today! After that big storm, I found a wrecked boat washed up on the beach.
It was really broken, but Snufkin and Pappa worked together to fix it. Pappa loves adventures, so he seemed really happy. I’m looking forward to going on an adventure at sea too.
This event is also adorable. It starts off with Snufkin warning Moomin that there’s bound to be a storm coming. He runs off to shelter in Moominhouse as it hits. The next day, Pappa tells Moomin that after storms like this, interesting things wash up on the beach. Moomin runs off to investigate, and finds a wrecked ship. Excited, he runs back to ask Pappa to help him fix it, so they can use it. Snufkin tags along to help too. Moomin saws down some trees for lumber (yes Pappa gave that 8 year old a saw and no he did not go to supervise. It’s fine), Mamma makes a new sail, and the ship is ready to go.
Throughout, Moomin is trying to keep this a secret from Little My who is obviously very 👀 about it. I’m sure that wont’ come to anything though...
Exploring Ghost Island (Summer Year 1)
Today we set off over the sea for the first time today – my heart was racing the whole time! Pappa looked just like a sea captain, he seemed very reliable and impressive. I’ll be like Pappa too someday!
Come to think of it, on Ghost Island I found a big stone. It looked like it had something written on it...
So, next day you set off on the ship! And, obviously, Little My turns up at dawn to tag along, despite Moomin’s best efforts to keep this secret. RIP Moomin. You head out and find a small island, setting up camp for the night. The next morning, Pappa sends you out to explore the island. There isn’t that much on it - some fruit you can’t get on the mainland, as well as a fishing spot and some shells. You also stumble across what is quite clearly a gravestone, but the writing on it is degraded and Moomin can’t read it.
While exploring, you keep hearing random noises and seeing random movements. Little My is convinced there is another living thing on the island, and is trying to hunt it down. Snufkin is just staring at the sea and saying weird shit about how wonderful it would be to try and run with the waves (to which Moomin’s response is just like ‘Uh. Okay’).
After you return to Pappa, he says it’s about time to pack up and head back. You go and collect Little My (furiously resisting because she hasn’t tracked down whatever it is) and Snufkin. You all report on what you found, incluidng the strange noises and movements. Based on that, Pappa names the island ‘Ghost Island’. I assume you can come back and find more to this place, but I haven’t done that yet!
Onto Autumn Year 1
