My Top Albums/EPs of 2021

It’s that time of year: The sharing of my musical appetite.

Pull up a seat.

I have to look into my archive to see how long I’ve been doing these end-of-the-year music lists. Nonetheless, I look forward to doing it every year. Once December arrives, I start rubbing my hands together like Birdman. What do I have on my plate this year?

For starters, I listened to a ton of projects this year. More than ever. Some were good, but lacked either vocally, sonically, or lyrically. While others were just...return to sender. I need all three. Below are the albums/EPs I’ve enjoyed the most without the need to skip any track.

X: *rueful smirk* With the moms hovering this whole trip, I thought it best to avoid a full- scale intervention.

W: They’re just worried about you. *Xander shoots her an exaggerated side eye* Don’t give me that look. It’s clear to anyone who loves you that you’re having a… rough time.

X: *wary* Yeah, well… you can all relax. I’m fine.

W: *hesitant* It’s ok, you know? If you’re… not. *silence* Watcher knows, there were many a Winterfest when I wasn’t. Membership in this family has its perks; but the closeness can have its drawbacks.

X: *guiltily* I’m sorry… for my role in— *Walker waves dismissively* You were clearly a pro at hiding it.

W: *shrugs awkwardly*Have you spoken to her? Is she ok? *silence as Xander looks at her perplexed* Look, I know things have been strained between us… But I need you to know you can always talk to me.

X: You think this is about Yasmin? *Walker opens her mouth to speak, then shuts it; Xander shakes his head slowly, voice thick with emotion* No… We’re not in touch.

W: *tremulous breath* Xander—

X: It’s late. I’m sure your boyfriend’s missing you.

W: Xan…

X: Don’t. *tries to smile genuinely* You know me. I’ll… figure it out. I always do. * silence*

W: I’m sorry… I should have never—

X: Walker—

W: I wish I could do it all over again. I never should have kissed you. I never should have—

X: Waited so long.

W: *shakes head* I don’t think that—

X: *shrugging her off* It’s all moot at this point anyway. You’re happy… Aren’t you? *charged silence*

*affected cheerfulness* Consider it karma. *sad smile* for my stupidity, in not seeing what I had in front of me all that time.

W: You know I love you, right?

X: I know… *whispers* But we both know it doesn’t change anything… *Walker nods dejected, Xander sighs*

*hoarse with unshed emotion* It’s late. You should probably head up.

W: You should too.

X: I will in a bit. *deep breath* I just wanna be alone for a while.
