Monographs 2023.

Opening just before World Day for Audiovisual Heritage, the Asian Film Archive will be presenting the second edition of Monographs, presented in the form of an exhibition and film programme. The interactive exhibition will feature the commssioned video essays that make use of often, archival footage, and the film screening programme will consist of films related to the written essays, including The Cloud Capped Star (1960, Ritwik Ghatak).

Monographs is a series of video and text essays on Asian cinema commissioned by the Asian Film Archive (AFA). Initially conceived during the outbreak of COVID-19 when physical screenings were disrupted, Monographs offers a critical platform for writers and thinkers to discourse upon the moving image beyond the walls of the cinema. The second edition of Monographs consists of 13 commissioned works—seven video essays and six written essays—produced in consultation with filmmaker/editor Daniel Hui and researcher/curator Matthew Barrington.

Responding to changing geological and socio-political landscapes, Monographs 2023: sinking, shifting, stirring interrogates how the environment, climate, and human and non-human relationships might be re-imagined. Evoking cycles of geological transformation, the anthology explores how cinematic representations of the environment move through cycles of dissolution, transformation and rebirth.

There is one landscape that has stayed with me over the years. The ruins of an abbey at dusk. This is not far from Canterbury Cathedral, which is crowded with tourists (Canterbury Cathedral can be seen in the distance on the left side of the photo). However, few tourists come this far, and there are only a man walking his dog. Oh, how nice to be able to visit a place like this every day, walking the dog!

The reason there are not many tourists is that there is not much to see but the ruins of an abbey on a vast expanse of lawn. The buildings are barely left except for their foundations, and the iconic red stone wall stands out. The best moment for me, however, comes when this red wall is illuminated by the setting sun, casting shadows on the lawn. I sit on the stone foundation where the rooms of the abbey would have been and wonder if the monks of that time also would have watched the sunset. And at this moment, there is the music I listen to in my earphones: My Secret Garden by Johnny Hates Jazz, the British band that had a hit with Shattered Dreams in the 1980s.

Casa Del Rosario [ Filipino Inspired Restaurant ] ♥ The Sims 4: Speed Build // CC

Welcome to Casa Del Rosario, an old Spanish Colonial home turned restaurant that serves authentic and homestyle Filipino dishes from all around the Philippines(Sulani). Whether you are craving something sweet or savoury, a meal cooked by Lolo (Grandpa) Romy at Casa Del Rosario never disappoints and will always put a smile on your face.

Note: The exterior of Casa Del Rosario was very much inspired by Spanish Colonial homes in the Philippines. Although recently renovated, Casa Del Rosario's original architectural character and features remain. The original wood, stone, and ornamentation throughout the building were maintained and acted as inspiration for the rest of the interior. Modern elements, along with furniture pieces made by locals, were introduced to the interior to blend in with the original structure and materiality of the building.

The world of Sulani was chosen as a representation of the Philippines as it shares similar island characteristics and landscape (Especially where I lived as a child). I was hoping to place this build in a heritage town similar to where I lived, but sadly, we do not have that kind of world in the Sims so while Sulani does not accurately depict the environment I had in mind for this build, it is the closest to the Philippines as it was going to get.

DISCLAIMER: As mentioned previously, the exterior of this build was INSPIRED by Filipino Spanish colonial architecture and is by no means accurate! (though I tried really hard to)

Lastly, one of the reasons why I decided to create this build and create this narrative was because I was re-watching @oshinsimss Growing together let's play and was inspired by how she showcases Filipino culture in her game! Her storytelling is what pushed me to create this build and it turned out to be one of my favourites.

It still astonishes me in this cancel culture how quick people are to denounce somebody for not disclosing their entire being in order to be “unproblematic” to play a role. I’m sure it happens to other actors but right now (due to something I saw in the tag) I’m thinking of the whole debate over Oscar Isaac “stealing Jewish roles” and it’s such a strange, narrow, bad faith conclusion. He’s played ... five Jewish characters that I can think of, and often served as a producer, and one of those roles has been explicitly about the Holocaust. Which to me, a person who’s also struggled with defining her faith because of being raised in the diaspora and dealing with the effects of imposed Christianity, says that maybe he’s working something out for himself.

But instead there’s people creating whole youtube videos saying he’s got white-passing privilege, and is antisemitic for “taking roles from Jewish actors”, and Moon Knight should’ve gone to Oliver Jackson-Cohen (I’m not sure in what world Oscar Isaac is ... more white-passing than OJC but anyhow), etc etc. When recently Oscar Isaac himself addressed the whole gatekeeping thing:

Oscar, you mention identity. Sidney is Jewish as written and you were not raised Jewish. Does that make you feel any particular responsibility?

ISAAC: We could play that game: How Jewish are you? It is part of my family, part of my life.

Now I’m all about media representation for marginalized groups. But the fan demand that actors disclose their faith/sexuality/neurodivergence or be denounced seems so insidious. Not even really about the actors themselves (they’ll get over it, they get paid lol) but the message it sends to the rest of us who are questioning, or working through our shit, or in a process of defining ourselves.

Is it useful to question the Jewishness of somebody who’s of Latam heritage when there’s a known history of Latinx Jewry having to conceal who they are? Who does this serve? Is it only people who’ve figured out and choose to share how they identify who deserve recognition as being valid?

So, I have left the cultural heritage sector.

Last Monday, I started a new job that is unlike anything I have done before. I am not sure I enjoy it, but it is also providing some really solid financial stability. It's been a very emotional week. This isn't what I want to be doing, but at the same time its going to open lots of doors for me. I will actually be able to travel outside of North America for the first time in over a decade.

I am still hoping to return to the cultural heritage sector, but in the meantime having this stability is very important to me. Plus, I am still doing tours on the side so I can still scratch the historical itch. This channel also helps.

I am not going anywhere as far as this channel is concerned: the uploads will become less consistent as I am now working full-time. But I really enjoy making this type of content. I really enjoy being able to share the things that I research and to offer my commentary on the world of museums and cultural heritage. This channel has come to mean a lot to me if I am being honest. I really, really enjoy the small community that has grown here and I want to continue to create here, it just won't be at the same pace.

I have some really fun projects planned: I have a museum walk-through/commentary video planned to come out next. I am also (possibly) going to talk about the latest season of OFMD. I hope to take the channel overseas next year too: I am planning a trip to jolly old England and there are a number of places I would like to visit and share with you. Perhaps, if the planning goes well, I might even visit Kedleston Hall to check in on the interpretation surrounding a certain dress...

I have lots of plans, but in the meantime, please be patient with me.

Humans navigate the boundary between humanity and animality and where we draw the line of personhood. We allow some animals to cross the boundary and become persons, and some humans intentionally cross the boundary and become animals. When humans cross into animality, they may look at the boundary of personhood from a different side – the animals become persons, and humans unpersons. In ‘Grizzly Man’, Herzog (2005) presents the idea that Timothy Treadwell retreated into the animal kingdom to avoid his ‘human’ problems. Patricia Taxxon (2023) proposes using the identity of an animal to reclaim the dehumanisation of being marginalised.

Living with bears is made to parallel Timothy changing his name and lying about his heritage – a way to reinvent himself. He seemed to refer to himself as on the bears' side, wanting to “mutually mutate into a wild animal” (Herzog, 2005). There is also a continuous reflection on his lack of connection to ‘the human world’, particularly his struggles with women. One could argue that the reason he died is because he went back to the bears after being rejected by the human world (getting into an argument with an airline employee). But this wasn’t about the bears. In his retreat into working with bears to avoid his problems, he did it for his own gain and still maintained anthropocentric beliefs. Instead of seeing humanity as uniquely special, he saw himself as uniquely special, able to defend and help bears with a problem they barely needed help with (the documentary emphasises that poaching was not a big problem in that region) (Herzog, 2005). Sven Haakkanson argues Treadwell’s self-centred ‘help’ may have put the bears in more danger, as it familiarised the bears with humans (Herzog, 2005).

Animality can be retreated to in more ways than just leaving to live in the wilderness. In her video ‘On the Ethics of Boinking Animal People’, Taxxon discusses her relationship to furry identity as an autistic person. She notes the dehumanisation of people who display autistic traits (particularly children) and how comparisons to animals have been used to dehumanise a multitude of marginalised groups – like the positioning of Jewish people as mice or rats in anti-Semetic propaganda to frame them as vermin (Taxxon, 2023). For her, furry identity (engaging with an anthropomorphised animal state and portraying animal traits) is a way of reclaiming this dehumanisation. To see non-human animals as people is to see humans dehumanised into being animalistic as people. As she says “I was treated like a failed human my entire life and […] my response was to become a dog”. But being a furry does not mean seeing yourself as the same as non-human animals in the way Treadwell tried to be (Taxxon, 2023 ; Herzog, 2005). There is an acknowledgement of the human body's limitations (Taxxon asks us to imagine the tail that is wagging) and there is no idea that being a furry makes someone uniquely capable of understanding or engaging with animals (Taxxon, 2023). Once again, it is a retreat into animalism that comes from a human perspective and responds to human problems.

Retreating into animalism is often done for human reasons, and I wonder if connection with animals is even possible through these means. Will we always be just humans in animal costumes?

Ciao lovelies! Today I have an opinion piece for you about societal expectations, breaking the norm, and having fun!

This post was inspired by many anonymous comments criticizing my hobbies. Their main argument is that I am too old to enjoy things like dolls and Monster High. So I’m here to explain my opinion on this matter! And, acknowledging that I am putting my opinion on the internet, I know that somehow, some anonymous person will find fault with it. So forewarning, I’m not answering any “trolling” comments, meaning if your only commentary is “lol ur lame for liking dolls” you’ll be respectfully ignored. Let’s get into it!

Part 1- Acknowledging Societal Influences

I’d like to begin by acknowledging the depth of influence that society has on the individual. To understand this, we must understand the different levels of society. Every country is a society, states inside that country are also societies within the main society, then counties and cities, etc, etc.. Where someone comes from will influence what societal norms they were affected by.

A common societal expectation in American society (and the one we’re focusing on in this piece) is the idea of what it means to be an adult, and that adults can’t enjoy “childish” things.

In the earlier days of American society, there were very rigid expectations and ideas on what it meant to be a bonafide adult. But around the 1960’s-1970’s, this rigid construct became a lot more flexible, and as time moved forward, different lifestyles became legitimized for the “American Adult.” Fun became not only allowed, but encouraged, and not just the boring kinds of fun either. The ideas for what was a legitimate recreational pursuit for the American Adult were wildly diverse and interesting.

But even though we have come so far in terms of these ideas, society has still maintained a talon grip on certain biases and ideals for “true adults.” The main ideal that is still foolishly upheld by society that I want to open dialogue about today is this old-world notion that things marketed towards children can’t be enjoyed by adults.

Part 2- On a Personal Level

To bring things back to the point of the piece, let’s make it personal. I enjoy many “childish” hobbies. I unironically like Monster High, the show, movies, and merchandise. The message behind it is really great; celebrating diversity and being yourself, and being proud of your heritage.

Something like Monster High, with such a good message and great lessons, shouldn’t be limited to children! I think some adults need these lessons too.

Part 3- A Return to Generalization

To continue, let’s return to a general sense. There are many “Children-oriented” things that can be enjoyed by adults. One of these is the hobby of collecting dolls!

Despite how common it is for adults to collect dolls, there is still a social stigma attached to it. Many different media portray adult doll collectors as creepy, mentally unstable, possibly violent or predatory people. Just look at Criminal Minds, where they had an episode where a woman accidentally kills other women trying to make herself new dolls. (Not that I’m saying I dislike Criminal Minds, but they do perpetuate some mental illness and societal stereotypes.)

In reality, adult doll collectors are usually quite normal. Some may collect dolls for photography purposes, some are parents who collect dolls with their children, some repaint the doll’s faces to create beautiful works of art, some may just enjoy dolls.

Similarly, video game use by adults used to be heavily stigmatized, adults who played video games were seen as nerds, shut-ins, or losers: Now, there are many jobs in the video game industry, and a legitimate possibility of success via playing video games on platforms like YouTube or Twitch.

Thinking of changing standards brings me to…

Part 4- Breaking The Norms

To think about breaking a societal norm/expectation scares most people, and for good reasons. Society is very protective of its norms, and has developed methods to protect them, much like a mama bear with her cubs.

But we shouldn’t fear backlash from expressing ourselves! Society is crafted, controlled, and run by those within the society, meaning that WE, you reading this, your friends, your family, me: We have the power to change society, and we should.

-So I was wondering what sort of artiste Zoro would be. I have already decided that Sanji would be Britney with traces of Beyoncé, Eren would be Christina. Ezreal would be like Justin Bieber. I decided to make Zoro like Usher with elements of Jay-Z. I initially envisioned him as just a rapper but after watching a YouTube video with Mackenyu singing and hitting dem falsettos, I thought that Zoro would be a sexy RnB singer

- Loads of songs about sex. Not shocking considering who his lover is though Sanji beats him in that department

- His parents are Japanese immigrants

- He was bullied as a kid thanks to his mixed heritage

- His father was married before and had three kids Kuina, Johnny and Yosaku. He is close to his half siblings

- He is the youngest in the Roronoa household which explains why he is so spoiled at times

- He hated his dad Arashi for being a toxic, abusive father

- He and his mum Tera had a rocky relationship due to his wild antics. Still she spoiled her son rotten. Also she was not that present in Zoro’s life which made him resent her for years

- Like Zoro got into trouble when he was younger because it was that difficult to tame him. He got up to all kinds of mischief and would openly flirt with boys but would sleep with none of them

- He met Griffith when he was 13 and lost his virginity to him. Their relationship was toxic and Griffith abused him to the point where Zoro snapped and they got into a violent fight at a club which got them both arrested. Zoro was a movie star by this point

- Arashi would re-enter his life a changed man by this point and his conversation with him changed Zoro and tamed him completely and also made him the cold hearted manipulative King that he currently is

- Zoro was in Gear V for a while before leaving to do his own thing

- Despite the ups and downs, his relationship with Sanji is considered a blessing for both of them

- He went solo the year after the Griffith incident and that was the best thing to happen to him

- He struggled with his sexuality and had an identity crisis til he met Sanji

- He had a mental breakdown after Griffith came back into his life to wreck havoc that Sanji stepped up and destroyed Griffith on his behalf

- His drinking habits are quite legendary

- He has a massive male fanbase for obvious reasons

- As he gets older and gets more muscular, fanboys drool over him

- Don’t be fooled by his cool looks, he can be quite a sexy tease and is as wild as Sanji when he is in a good mood

- He meditates a lot

- He and Sanji are both very competitive and often surprise each other with their various music projects

- When it comes to making love to Sanji, he no longer holds back. Yes he is that wild in bed. God forbid if he is drunk that day

- He rivals Sanji in the Best Ass in the world department. Yup he too got a famous butt that everyone loves

- He is a bit of a pervert especially around Sanji xD

- He eats a lot though Luffy is far worse

Jade enjoyed a respectable debut on "The Lighter" earlier this month, showcasing her SF House, Ashiana Asian Gems that was new to us. So we're bringing her over here for we know there's plenty of lovin' vs120s-1-style for Marlboro Girls. And Jade belongs to the club!

Jade's second post on our network comes just two weeks after her debut on our digital neighbor and member of our family, lostlighter23. In her follow-up, her pace at smoking her Marlboro is a bit quicker than in her introductory video. Her house, Ashiana Asian Gems, was new to us but is led by SF actress/model legend Ashiana who is one of the top SF stars of Asian Heritage in the history of the Greater SF World Community scene! Jade is cute and more than a little bit of a hungry smoker!
