Where We Are – Halcyon, Flavors from the Earth
This week’s Wish Designs USA “Where We Are” is with thanks to Bobbi from North Carolina. While dining with family in Charlotte, Bobbi spotted our hickory branch chandeliers in Halcyon,
Flavors from the Earth.
Per Halcyon’s Facebook, they are a true dining experience. Located in the Mint Museum Uptown, Halcyon celebrates the bounty of artisanal farms, cheesemakers and wineries from their local community, and beyond.

Branchelier of the Day
The Briarwood hickory branch chandelier is a long standing classic design. It is distinguished by 14 candles staggered throughout the body of the fixture in a loose three tiered effect. The branching style is full and calls for hickory with a gnarly bend. The Briarwood has an overall robust appearance which gives it a commanding presence that is well suited to a great room or lobby setting.

Wish Designs USA, Tigerrags Division
Here at Wish Designs USA you know us for our lighting. There’s more to us that you might not be aware of. We have a great line of rugs and pillows, Tigerrags division, we have been making since the 70’s. They are similar to the old fashioned rag rugs of years past. But they are better now. In the very beginning we made our rugs from fabric; cotton, wools, men’s suiting material and even lace. They had a great visual appeal but were not durable as functional floor coverings.
As the line evolved we moved into leather. This was strong and durable. There is something just hot and sexy about a textured leather rug but no so much when they needed cleaned. Spot cleaning was an option to remove the occasional wine spill and a vacuum attachment or a good shake would free any dust and debris. They could be taken to a commercial cleaner but the weight of the rug itself was prohibitive, never mind the cost. Over time the leather would crush down and fatigue much like our shoes break in and our belts relax. While this wasn’t a deal breaker the appearance was less fresh over time.
Remember when I said they are better now. They are. They are made from ultra suede. This is a micro fiber that has been around for quite a while. I was first introduced to ultra suede in the early 80’s by my mother. She came across these fantastic women’s suits that were machine washable at home! They were all the rage! Trendy skirt and jacket combos that looked like the updated version of dad’s leisure suits of the 70’s. She had one in every color. Well at least 5. They held true to their easy care promise looking just as good after each wash. And how cool that clothes and sofas were made from the same stuff! Somewhere a bell went off. A suit was sacrificed and a product reborn.
This change of materials gave a new life to our pillows as well. They were softer now. They were something you wanted to lay your face on. They didn’t lint on your clothes. They were so easy care. Rugs moved full force from sitting and guest rooms to the entry, kitchen and bath! Can they go in the bathroom? Will water hurt them in the kitchen? NO! They are machine washable! Cold water, gentle cycle fluff dry. All done. Easy as that. Won’t shrink, stretch or fade. Magic material.
Then we got really clever. Our rugs had a limit we needed to overcome. The size of the washing machine. We had the best, easy to care for rug on the market but size mattered. There is only so large you can go when stuffing an area rug into the washing machine. We thought on it and came up with a way to allow our rugs to break down into washable sections. We developed a method of splitting the backing and attaching it together with Velcro. Because of the way we do it and the texture of our rugs you don’t see it or feel it when you walk on it. This is so cool. 12’ x 20’ rugs (or whatever size you need) can be cared for in your home! Our rugs are made with a mildew resistant backing which lets them move outdoors as well. Inside, outside, pond side, pool side is our motto.
We offer custom. Custom size, shape, color and design. Sure we do all the standard sizes, 2’ x 4’, 5’ x 7’, 8’ x 10’, but we go beyond that limit. The hallway needs a runner 2’8” x 17’? Done! The den has a funny angled wall and a standard square or rectangle won’t do the job? Parallelogram! Trapezoid even! You get the idea. Round, oval, or send us a template to make a free form shape that winds in and out of sectional furniture.
Your designer has hundreds of colors to choose from. There is not a limit to the amount of colors, 2 or 20, the more the better. Specifying the amount of each color changes the whole mood of your piece. How different would it be to have a rug that was 80% blue and 20% red as opposed to the opposite? I am a fan of the more shades the better. That way no color is ever wrong. Look at a Tigerrag like you would a painting or a silk arrangement. Monet used more than one shade of blue. Also, remember these rugs last! Choosing a variety of colors will give the piece movement down the road as your décor changes. There will always be a similar strain of color that you like in your home. With a variety of shades your rug will move with these changes.
Our designs go beyond mixing colors alone. We offer borders, zigzags, stripes. We can mimic corporate logos or art. All the while our Tigerrags remain easy care, machine washable, regardless of size!
