im sat on the sofa feeling poorly and watching critical role and suddenly got an intense need to write a modern day willow au where they're just playing a dnd campaign.

because it's too perfect.

graydon is the one who wants to start it the most, he's always been in to dnd but has never really had any friends so has never actually been able to play. his character sheet has been ready to go since he was like 10 and he already knows all the spells he wants to use. a bard with a dark past who never rolls well in battle.

elora is happy to play and chooses something like a druid because she likes the idea of talking to and turning into animals. she doesn't quite understand just how powerful her character is until half way through the campaign where the dm does a big reveal about her past.

they play at scorpia's, she's got the big table and the space. so she makes appearances every so often when they're at a part of the adventure that sounds interesting to her.

boorman used to play when he was younger, and massively enjoys making the dms life difficult. very much in a "no kids this is how u play" way when really he keeps complicating everything and has almost got them killed a few times.

jade was on board as soon as she was told her character could use a sword, and she had to convince scorpia to host.

kit does not understand the rules. she never knows what she's rolling for or what stats to check and honestly thought the whole thing was a bit childish and silly at first, but jade wanted to play so she went along with it. but now? she always acts without thinking which causes a round of groans from the rest of the group but always makes it more interesting, and its kit who many hours later that night will still be thinking about what could have went differently.

airk lives in a different city most of the time, away for college or something, but joins in whenever he's in the area. sometimes he'll video call in from where he is too and his character does his own little side quests.

willow is the disgruntled uncle figure that they convinced to be their dm. as soon as they all learned he had done it before and knew how, they wouldn't stop annoying him and he figured that giving in and running a campaign would be the easiest road to take rather than trying to fight them on it. he enjoys it a lot more than he lets on.

as a group, the characters they made are so all over the place that it really shouldn't work, but somehow it does.

So I know the consensus is “Disney Bad” but like… I’m really enjoying Willow so far >_>

Both the MCs are gorgeous (and gay 😏), the rest of the cast is fairly likable, the plot is pretty decent (tho tbh the better episodes are when the plot isn’t all the relevant 😒), the fantasy aspects are done well. Idk it’s just real good 🤷‍♀️

I wanna dislike Kit, cuz she’s kind of a total brat, but idk I’m having the opposite reaction and sorta liking her lol Jade is great (and, again, fkn gorgeous). Elora is probly the only character I’d be completely content with the show even if she wasn’t there, but I don’t actively want her gone. I didn’t start off liking gray but he’s grown on me. The two old guys are both pretty fun. The brother sideplot (main plot? 🤔) I could do without but it’s where the whole story is so oh well.

Idk. Go watch it if you want some sapphic Lord of the Rings?

Am I reading too much into Kael's helmet being in the clouds on the Willow series poster by thinking someone might pull a Kylo and be his grandkid or at least imitate him?

Not reading too much into it, although as Marie-Claire and I discuss on our new What The Force show Following Willow (shameless plug!), I'm not expecting a Kylo situation, at least at first. There definitely seem to be acolytes of Bavmorda and/or Kael out there, presumably the ones who kidnap Prince Airk. There are several masked figures in the trailers, including at one point even Jade. Further, we know Bavmorda was not killed but banished to "the Netherworld," so she could feasibly return or lure a hero to her a la Palpatine. I think the question will be whether Kael specifically is an important figure, or whether it's just the specter of death that his mask represents.

Anyway I'm SUUUUPER-stoked for this show! Thanks for the ask!

I am so beyond excited for the Willow Disney+ series. I'll just expose myself and say it - I'm in it for the gays. BUT it genuinely looks so good and like such fun, and I did get around to watching the original Willow, which was honestly a blast!!!

Anyways, excited to see my girl Erin Kellyman slay.
