Wigglett!!
While it may look like a regional variant of Diglett, this Pokemon is actually a completely unrelated species, and is pure water-type. In fact, with the classification of "Garden eel pokemon" Wigglett is actually a type of fish.
Wigglett is an example of something that takes place in the real world known as Convergent evolution, a phenomena in which two or more completely unrelated species of animal evolved into very similar roles and body types, or independently evolved similar adaptations.
Think Sharks and Dolphins. Both predatory animals with very similar body plans designed to accomplish the same thing, but one is a fish and the other is a mammal, and the two are in no way directly related to one another.
Another good example of convergent evolution is the evolution of wings in multiple unrelated species. Bats, birds, and insects. They all have very different ideas of what a wing should be, but all of their wings function and accomplish the same goal: Flight
Some are now beginning to theorize that Wigglett isn't the first example of convergent evolution, pointing to the "Pikachu clones" as an example.
However, this is extremely incorrect. All of these Pokemon are rodents, making them directly related to one another. In fact, the Pokedex entry for Pachirisu in Pokemon legends: Arceus all but confirms this
"A species related to the Pikachu line. Though Pachirisu is a calm Pokémon, it still presents a danger should one touch its electrified tail or cheeks."
So no, the Pikachu clones are not an example of convergent evolution, but the opposite; Divergent evolution. Multiple species branching off from one species as they change over time to fill different roles in their environments, eventually becoming so different that they can be classified as different animals. think lions and tigers, or wolves and foxes.

Congruent Evolution is based off an actual thing in nature where two COMPLETELY unrelated species look remarkably similar.
That's why Wigglett isn't just "Paldean Diglett", it's based off an ENTIRELY different animal and just so happens to LOOK like Digglett.
I suppose so.
Though maybe they should've saved it as the next game's gimmick since they're gonna run out of those eventually and they've shoved like 3 gimmicks into SV?
