Varmint Hunting

I put in some time hunting whistlepigs the other day. They've been tearing up my yard, which isn't good when I'm trying to sell. Used a .22 pellet rifle and dropped 4 with a single shot each. I get one, they run, then 20-30 minutes later another would show up. I think the rest went into hiding back in the den. Haven't seen any for a couple of days, so hopefully they will now stay away, but I doubt it.

And yes, a pellet rifle because the ammo is cheaper and unlike some on here, I can't afford to constantly replace the real ammo. I thought about using one of my crossbows, but I haven't sighted them in this year yet. I should do that soon.

The whistlepigs have been coming over to my place because the old tow yard they live in, the owner of which never sold any of the cars he towed died last month, is finally getting cleaned up by his daughter so their den area is being disturbed. She sold the junkers to one of the scrap yards and they're being hauled away slowly.

One of my well fed little friends from this morning’s walk was this woodchuck—also called a groundhog or whistle pig, due to their distinctive whistle call. Not a friend to gardeners due to their persistence and hearty appetite, they are common in most areas of the Cape. I suspect this one is a mom, the same one I saw last year in this same spot with her kits. She may have young that are safely ensconced in her den, where they spend their first four or five weeks.
