Note
would the un and nato and such count as like an imperialist cartel? (i.e. steel syndicates and such) bc they are both imperialist their processes are very similar, just wanted to know if cartel would be a term that accurately describes them
as I understand it, the economic definition of a cartel is a group of a very few entities which cooperate secretly or openly in order to prevent competition. While institutions like the UN, NATO, or the Bretton Woods organizations (IMF and WB) are fundamentally imperialist, it's not true that they don't have competition, because, for example, Russia exists, which is an imperialist power opposed to US hegemony. Maybe cartel is a good way to describe it, if you don't consider no competition a restriction.
I think other words such as hegemony do a better job

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: Modi is discriminating between states!? He has frozen the GST funds of West Bengal!! For those unaware, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has claimed that GST funds worth over Rs 2,500 crores and social welfare funds grossing Rs 1.1 lakh crores were not being provided back to the state!! Is this true? Yes, but half of the whole truth. According to Central Govt. records, the WB govt. created over 2.5 million fake MGNREGS job cards to siphon taxpayers’ money worth hundreds of crores! Moreover, WB authorities refused to cooperate with the investigation teams!! Moreover, FM Nirmala Sitharaman recently clarified the freezing of GST funds. She said that states like Goa, Kerala, and West Bengal had not submitted their AG certificate, a document that accounts for GST collection and compliance, for over 4 years!! She also added that the GST Council was holding the funds, NOT the Central Government, and would release them when the AG was submitted! Is PM Modi’s government weaponizing tax funds? Or is it simply following the law?? Follow Jobaaj Stories Page on LinkedIn(the Media arm of Jobaaj Group) for more.

hey~ I was remembering what Yibo wore for wb night 2019 's red carpet and what a huge contrast it is to what he wore this year which made me think about how much more often he's been dressing in feminine clothes over the last year which in turn made me wonder if/how much of a choice he himself might have in his styles. Do you possibly know? Does he just get styled with whatever his stylists prepare for him or is it possible that he himself gets a say, too? ^-^
The following is my insight and perception as a professional stylist and is subjective to my position and role.
Not every stylist approaches deviating from an artist's public image and persona the same way, so there's always the possibility of me being off the mark or extremely on point with the way I see this.
I've always made it quite clear to my clients that if they ever feel like their current style is going stale or they wish to change it up, to let me know and never allow themselves to become complacent. (Complacency = social/public death in regards to style). Once it has been brought to attention we can then sound off whether it is best to spruce up their look while maintaining the original framework, or to overhaul the whole kit and break away from it entirely.
While I do hold the authority on what is and is not agreeable with a client's style trajectory and evolution, I do not often flex it unnecessarily. I'd rather remain open and hear any ideas they have since it is their image I'm creating. Similarly, I go in for this same treatment when I have an idea or want to make an adjustment to their style and try to gain their cooperation before implementing a change. It allows for a more sincere style to emerge when everyone is aware and on board, and also lends goodwill to our relationship. This proves especially true with clients that have an interest and actively engage with fashion. Staying up to date on trends and placing preference in certain brands can help them take hold of how they want to be seen, which actually makes my own job much easier. Accommodating the client is a key principle in the stylist playbook and can make or break the tone of your working together.
I think it also worth noting two truths of this line of work to give some context. The first is that genderless/fluid identity/androgyny is a rising star of fashion. The second is that despite the steady interest androgyny is building, a large percentage of the fashion world still views it very critically and not all too favorably. Fashion tends to be counterintuitive in this way quite often, unfortunately. This is a matter of the internal politics involved in the fashion and style industry, most of which center around the matter of andro fashion relieving style of it's conceptualized gender roles which threatens the marketability of fem/masc fashion. High fashion remains an exclusive luxury and privilege because it inflates capital consumerism. Fashion becoming inclusive and expansive would slash prices and marketing value within a large margin. (There's also some scrutiny of how beauty standards would fall apart since the industry adheres to slim, white, cis ideals more often than not).
Finally, with consideration of the climate of fashion's reluctance to fully engage with andro styles and the rapport between stylist and client, it would be a mistake to think Yibo didn't have a say in assimilating the so-called "yender" style he has been wearing frequently. He's knowledgeable of fashion and has stated in many interviews he prefers to utilize the core of fashion for what it is - expression and attitude.
I do recall that he said it was the suggestion of his stylist to start wearing womenswear designed jackets due to his bodily proportions, but there's no way of knowing with certainty that he's not included in the decision making process. From my perspective it would make more sense for him to be involved than be sidelined.

25 Best Sports TV Shows
https://www.denofgeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/TV-High-School-Travel-Guides.png?resize=400%2C400
Sports stories have traditionally belonged to the movies. Something about the rhythms of competition, in which an athlete or team trains, plays, and then either wins or loses, is a natural fit for the film world’s three act structure.
Television, with its multiple episodes and seasons, is often more discursive and therefore less viable for truly great sports stories. Thankfully, that all seems poised to change. While some sports TV shows have found success in the past, now the medium has really kicked things up a notch. Sports stories like Brockmire, Ted Lasso, Cobra Kai, and more are not only welcome on television, but an essential part of the cable and streaming landscape.

The Best Sports Documentaries To Stream
By Scott Fontana and 2 others
With that in mind, it’s high time we pay homage to TV’s great sports programs. What follows is a list of 25 of the best sports TV shows of all time, hand selected by Den of Geek (i.e. me: the arms-crossed weirdo in the picture at the bottom of this article).
It’s important to keep in mind that these are the best scripted sports TV shows. Television is, of course, no stranger to live sports and the various programs that surround them. Consider these unscripted American sports shows as honorable mentions: Hard Knocks, Last Chance U, Ken Burns’ Baseball, The Last Dance (and most other 30-for-30s), Cheer, Inside the NBA.
Enough of the undercard, now onto the main event.
25. Red Oaks
Amazon Prime’s Red Oaks examines the bougie tennis lifestyle of the 1980s. It all comes through the lens of David Myers (Craig Roberts), a college student looking to pick up some cash by taking a summer job at an upscale Jewish country club in New Jersey. Sports stories and coming-of-age stories fit particularly well because the end goal of each one is usually growth. It’s hard to say whether David grows during his time at Red Oaks, but he certainly changes over the series’ three seasons.
24. The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers
A TV show based on Disney sports movie behemoth franchise The Mighty Ducks was all but an inevitability, particularly when the major conglomerate secured its own streamer in Disney+. We’re all lucky then that The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers turned out to be quite good rather than completely perfunctory. The show is bold enough to recast its Ducks’ franchise as the villains and to rally around the radical idea that youth sports should be fun.
23. One Tree Hill
At first glance, One Tree Hill doesn’t seem too different from the other teen shows of its era on The CW (though The CW was still “The WB” for One Tree Hill’s first two seasons). It’s about high schoolers in a small town, doing high school things. Where One Tree Hill excels (at least in its early, still high school seasons) is the introduction of basketball as a storytelling crutch. Half brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) have a turbulent enough relationship to begin with. What better way to contextualize that relationship than through the high stakes lens of high school basketball?
22. Lights Out
Not to be confused with the 2016 horror film of the same name, Lights Out is a boxing series from FX that ran for one excellent season in 2011. Holt McCallany (best known now as Agent Bill Tench on Mindhunter) stars as retired heavyweight champion Patrick “Lights” Leary. Despite displaying signs of neurological trauma from his career, Lights can’t help but want to return to the ring for one more shot of glory (and to pay off his family’s many debts). Lights Out is a sad, elegiac little story about how one man who sees a sport that broke his brain as the only realistic option for success.
21. Big Shot
Big Shot premiered shortly after its bigger-named Disney+ cousin The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. And while Game Changers made a slightly bigger splash, Big Shot might be the better sports show. The story follows Marvyn Korn (John Stamos), a tempermental basketball coach who ends up at an elite all-girls prep school to shepherd its basketball program. Big Shot runs through all the tried and true tropes and beats of sports stories and does so with aplomb. Consider it Hardball meets Hoosiers with plenty of Stamos charm.
20. Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper
Sports are somewhat incidental to Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper’s mission. Sure, lead character Mr. Cooper (Mark Curry) is a former Golden State Warriors basketball player turned PE teacher. But like its TGIF programming block peers, this show is a charming hangout comedy with few lasting conflicts to speak of. Still, you don’t spend that much time in a gym without some three-pointers and lay-ups.
19. Coach
Before Craig T. Nelson was Mr. Incredible (or made this truly amazing televised statement), he was best known for portraying the title role in ‘90s ABC sitcom Coach. In fact, many of our archetypical perceptions of what makes a football coach likely come from Nelson’s portrayal of Coach Hayden Fox (who first coached for a fictional NCAA football team and later an NFL one). This is a man whose skill at molding young athletes belies his lack of skill at…well, everything else. Ultimately, Coach is a worthwhile multiseason experience in which a grown man grows up.
18. Kingdom
Kingdom is probably the best sports TV show that you’ve never heard of. Don’t worry, it’s not your fault. That’s just the kind of thing that happens when a show is damned to languish on AT&T’s ludicrous “Audience Network”. Kingdom is set in an MMA gym and captures all the drama provided in the heightened world of mixed martial arts combat. The show is blessed with some great characters and an even better cast. Frank Grillo (Captain America’s most annoying foe, Brock Rumlow), Kiele Sanchez (Lost), Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights), Jonathan Tucker, (Justified)  and Nick Jonas (yes, that Nick Jonas) all make their mark on the series.
17. The White Shadow
Premiering in 1978, CBS’s The White Shadow was uncommonly progressive for its time. The series follows Ken Reeves (Ken Howard), a white NBA player who retires after a knee injury and elects to take up coaching at Carver High School in South Central Los Angeles. Coach Reeves’s team is made up primarily of Black and Hispanic players and the show deals with the social ills of life in the inner city. It’s also quite funny and charming and features a commitment to realistic basketball scenes.
16. The League
FX comedy The League works as a sports show (and as a TV show in general) because it has a deep understanding of sports from a fan’s perspective. Sure, fans watch collegiate and professional sports to marvel at the athleticism, training, and skill on display. But more importantly, they watch sports to have something to talk about with their friends. Though the participants in the titular fantasy football league at the center of The League grew up as friends, who’s to say they would have stayed friends so long without this league keeping them together? Ruxin (Nick Kroll) is an asshole. Andre (Paul Scheer) is annoying. And Taco (Jon Lajoie) is, well…Taco.
15. Rocket Power
If the ‘90s taught us anything it’s that extreme sports are sports too, man! Rocket Power is a lovely little slice of life Nick Toon that follows four kids in a fictional California surfing community. Otto Rocket, Reggie Rocket, Maurice “Twister” Rodriguez, and Sam “Squid” Dullard spend their days skateboarding, surfing, playing street hockey, and occasionally snowboarding. It’s a wonderful ode to childhood and all the athletic activities that make the day (and years) go by far too quickly.
14. Luck
If things shook out differently, perhaps Luck could have been considered one of the five or so best sports shows of all time. All of the pieces were in place. This 2012 HBO series had the right creative team (created and run by Deadwood’s David Milch and starring Dustin Hoffman with a pilot directed by Michael Mann) to go along with an intriguing premise (complicated characters’ lives intersecting at a horse track). But alas…the dead horses. Oh so many dead horses. Despite stringent safety measures put in place, Luck lost three hoof bois during filming of its first season and was canceled shortly thereafter. May they all rest in peace.
13. All American
High school is a turbulent time in all our lives. And when the high stakes world of competitive football is added in, things can only get more intense. The CW’s All American opts to take the world of high school football and opts to add in a welcome dose of sociopolitical commentary. This series is loosely based on the life of former New York Giants linebacker Spencer Paysinger and follows his character “Spencer James” as he is recruited from South L.A. to play for the affluent Beverly Hills High. The show wisely understands that sports (particularly when they involve Black teenagers) are a marvelous portal to explore American society.
12. Pitch
Cruelly cut short after just one season of 10 episodes, Pitch is the kind of sports show that will inspire sports stories for years to come. This baseball series for Fox comes from Dan Fogelman (This Is Us) and Rick Singer. It follows the saga of Ginny Baker (Kylie Bunbury), who becomes the first woman to play in Major League Baseball when she’s called up to pitch by the San Diego Padres. Pitch was blessed with an excellent cast including Bunbury and Mark-Paul Gosselaar as a veteran catcher nearing the end of his Hall of Fame career. More interestingly, it was blessed with an actual MLB licensing deal. There are no silly fictional teams in this show like the Tuscaloosa Barn-Burners or the Helena Hellcats. It’s all real MLB team names and logos, adding to the realism of a cool premise.
11. Ballers
Of course, Elizabeth Warren’s favorite show has to be on this list. Ballers has a bit of an unearned reputation for being cringe thanks to its ridiculous name and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s delightful cornball energy. In reality, this is an exceedingly watchable TV show and one that examines the corporate side of professional sports quite well. It’s also noticeable for being most viewers’ introduction to eventual Tenet star John David Washington.

10. GLOW
Is professional wrestling a sport? Vince McMahon would argue that it’s “sports entertainment.” I would argue that that’s more than good enough to get the excellent GLOW on this list. GLOW tragically fell victim to Netflix’s whimsical cancellation procedures. Why the almighty algorithm decided a show needed to be canceled after it was already renewed is beyond me. But don’t let that sour three seasons of superb sportsy storytelling. GLOW follows the fictionalized rise of the very real “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling” and it centers it on the conflict between two former best friends, Ruther Wilder (Alison Brie) and Debbie Eagen (Betty Gilpin). GLOW differs a bit from the usual sports fare in that the “sport” at its center wasn’t necessarily plan A for the athletes. But the experience of watching the ladies train, grow, and succeed is pure and sublime sports story stuff.
9. Cobra Kai
Cobra Kai absolutely could have been phoned in. The streaming world runs on nostalgia and there’s nothing more sweetly nostalgic than The Karate Kid franchise. Instead, this Netflix series changes the original franchise’s perspective by focusing on the “villainous” Cobra Kai dojo and re-examines things from Johnny’s point of view. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka deserve credit for embodying realistically adult, yet flawed versions of their original characters. Equally deserving of credit though is a whole host of young actors bringing the martial arts to a whole new generation.
8. Blue Mountain State
A lot of the shows on this list are, let’s say, reverential to the sports, teams, and athletes they cover. Spike comedy Blue Mountain State is decidedly…not. This series, following the Mountain Goats football team for the fictional college Blue Mountain State, understands that not all depictions of athletes have to be saints. Sometimes college football player can just be the big dumb animals you want them to be. Through three seasons, this show developed a cult following that would follow it over for a lifetime of reruns on Netflix. Blue Mountain State is crass, dangerous, and entertaining, not entirely unlike football.
7. Sports Night
Speaking of being reverential to sports…like all Aaron Sorkin-created TV series, Sports Night can be a bit full of itself sometimes. That only works when the topic at hand, like the federal branch of the U.S. government, is consequential. Thankfully, sports can be pretty important sometimes too! This late ‘90s show follows the goings-on at a Sportscenter-esque news program hosted by Dan Rydell (Josh Charles) and Casey McCall (Peter Krause). It has all the witty dialogue you’d come to expect from a Sorkin venture. And if you can make your way through the inexplicable laugh track of the early episodes, you will find a mature, entertaining show that properly understands and contextualizes professional sports’ role in American society.
6. Survivor’s Remorse
Survivor’s Remorse came into the world with two strikes against it. One is a bizarrely overwrought name, and the other is that its home network, Starz, isn’t a given on many cable packages. Still, this LeBron James-produced comedy is shockingly one of the best sports TV shows ever (and perhaps still the best creative venture James has been involved in yet). This story follows NBA athlete Cam Calloway (Jessie T. Usher) as he tries to balance the business and basketball aspects of his life. At first the show focuses on Cam’s guilt for having got out of his impoverished neighborhood when so many couldn’t (hence, the show’s title), but ultimately it evolves into a family comedy drama featuring some truly remarkable characters and performances like Cam’s cousin and manager Reggie Vaughn (RonReaco Lee) and his baller half-sister “M-Chuck” (Erica Ash). Even Monica Rambeau herself, Teyonah Parris, is a part of the proceedings.
5. Playmakers
Sometimes I can’t even believe that Playmakers is real. Surely, this ESPN series about a fictional football team in a fictional league that is clearly the NFL was just a post-9/11 fever dream we all endured together. Alas, Playmakers was real and it was awesome. This series follows the players on the Cougars as they navigate a football landscape filled with ripped-from-the-headlines strife including Performance enhancing drugs, good old-fashioned drugs, domestic abuse, concussions, and more. The series even introduces the outing of a gay player more than a decade before Michael Sam and Carl Nassib revealed their sexual orientations. Naturally, Playmakers was canceled when the NFL intimated to its broadcast partner ESPN that it wasn’t too pleased with the content of its show. And enraging the National Football League alone is enough to make this an all-time classic.
4. Eastbound & Down
Eastbound & Down creator and star Danny McBride isn’t necessarily a huge fan of baseball. But he is, thankfully, a huge fan of weirdos and creeps. When McBride discovered just how bizarre and poorly behaved certain flamethrowing relief pitchers could be, Kenny Powers and the show around him was born. The baseball “action” in Eastbound isn’t much to write home about. The show isn’t too concerned with the results of any given baseball game and McBride always looks like he’s throwing a javelin and not a baseball. It’s still a phenomenal saga about athletes that dives into Paul Bunyan-esque tales of legendary misbehavior that fame encourages. It’s no coincidence that in the follow ups to Kenny Powers, McBride has delved into megalomaniacal vice principals and bejeweled, sweaty televangelists – all different aspects of the white American male id.
3. Ted Lasso
Of all the sports shows in the TV canon, none feels more like a traditional sports movie than Ted Lasso. This Apple TV+ series plucks an American football coach-fish and gently places him out of water in the English Premier League. The affable Lasso (Sudeikis) is charged with reversing the fortunes of EPL side AFC Richmond. Little does he know, however, that spiteful owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddington) is counting on him to fail, Major League style. Ted Lasso isn’t interested in reinventing the wheel. Instead it perfects it. This is a tale of relentless optimism and unconditional positive regard. Ted breaks the mold for what we expect from coaches, which is probably why so many actual coaches are fond of the show. Simply put: sports stories can’t be done much better than this one.
2. Brockmire
Sometimes commentators like to bemoan the modern state of baseball. What was once American’s pastime has now supposedly fallen behind things like football and videogames in the pop cultural pecking order. Then along comes something like Brockmire to teach us that baseball as a continuous, seemingly eternal American presence is just as vital as ever. In a career-defining role, Hank Azaria plays disgraced baseball broadcaster Jim Brockmire. Once at the top of his game, an on-air drunken meltdown loses him his job and his sanity. In season 1 of this superb IFC show, Brockmire returns to the booth, this time for an independent league team in Morristown, Pennsylvania. The four seasons that follow are one big love letter to not only baseball, but the messy human experience itself. It’s rare that you get something this funny and this affecting. The fact that it’s wrapped in a stylish diamond-shaped bow is just icing on the cake.
1. Friday Night Lights
Not only is Friday Night Lights the best sports TV show of all time, it’s hard to imagine it ever being supplanted from its throne. Simply put, Friday Night Lights is a sports television masterpiece. Each of Friday Night Lights’ five seasons (save for the writer’s strike-shortened second) fully capture the ecstasy and agony of high school football in a small Texas town where high school football is the only thing that matters. Friday Night Lights doesn’t shy away from the unsavory institution that is big time high school athletics.
The series opens with a life-changing injury before following it up with tales of corrupt boosters and garden variety West Texas racism. And yet, the show never looks down on its characters. If winning state is important to Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler), Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford), Tim Riggins (Taylor Kitsch), Smash Williams (Gaius Charles), and Vince Howard (Michael B. Jordan), then it’s important to us too. In fact, when Friday Night Lights is really rolling and the W.G. Snuffy Walden’s Explosions in the Sky-style soundtrack is swirling, you might not recall anything ever mattering to you as much as the Dillon Panthers or the East Dillon Lions winning a football game. Clear eyes, full hearts, absolutely cannot lose.

17 Questions
17 Get to know me questions. Answer 17 questions then tag 17 people you want to get to know better. Tagged by @f0xyboxes thank you!!
1.Nicknames: Never had one. I’ve been referred to as “Strafe” a couple of times on here and honestly that would be a WICKED nickname but I’m not going to ask anyone to call me that...
2.Zodiac: Pisces
3.Height: 5′6″(167.64cm)
4.Hogwarts House (you can change this one to something else if you don’t like HP, idk like D&D class or Divergent Faction or something): honestly don’t know. Way back when Pottermore first started I made an account and got Hufflepuff, then a few years later I forgot my login and made a new one and got Gryffindor, then when they changed it up I made a new one and got Slytherin....
5.Last Thing I Googled: Taco Bell Menu/Sunday hours for the one near me
6.Song Stuck In My Head: “Orange Crush” R.E.M
7.Number of Followers: 102 (!!!!)
8.Amount of Sleep: my sleep schedule is nonexistent. I guess on average though I get like 6 hours, then if I have the day off I’ll sleep for like 12 (not straight, I wake up every couple of hours or so)
9.Lucky Number: don’t have one
10.Dream Job: No job at all. “I don’t dream of labor” as they say.
11.Wearing: pajamas
12.Favorite Song: uh literally hundreds haha. I’ll go by my favorite songs of the past couple of weeks which have been “American Jesus” by Bad Religion, “True Faith” by New Order, and “the Passenger” by Iggy Pop.
13.Favorite Instrument: don’t play any but to listen to I guess guitar or banjo
14.Aesthetic: Virginia summer nights filled with fireflies, loud music and friends. Purple crocuses, dirty plates and cups stacked on dusty dressers, the smell of laundry detergent and faint scent of wheat beer, old band t-shirts from your teens, the slightly musty smell of an old car interior, the whir of a computer fan, the smell and sound of fizz from a just opened energy drink, split lips and the faint taste of blood, muffled sound of heavy metal through headphones, the rattle of pill bottles in the bottom of a purse, worn out combat boots and overlarge flannel shirts...
15.Favorite Author: JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin, Susan Cooper, Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, lots more.... Do poets count? I have more favorite poets than novel authors I think. I’m big into the Romantics (Wordsworth, Keats, Shelley, Whitman) and Modernists (WB Yeats, TS Eliot etc.). And Victorian era poets too (Matthew Arnold and Robert Browning...) (I really need to get back into reading though, I just keep reading the same books over and over.....)
16.Favorite Animal Noise: spring peeper frogs and toads singing, and cats purring.
17.Random: don’t hate me but I never could get into to Pokemon like, at all. I used to hate it because I got teased for not liking it, now it’s just like something that’s there that don’t mind if I can blacklist it/I’m not overexposed to it lol..... I’m tagging: @risenlucifer @madsismad @goodboiboomer-fc5 @fromathelastoveritaserum @edensfate @amistrio @indigorox @alwaysseedfamily @dep-yo-tee @unleashed111 @ja-crispea @jack-morrison @nightwingshero  @deputy-janai  @returnofthepd3  @farcry-5fan  @tomexraider’m particularly interested to see what people come up with for their aesthetics but no pressure at all!

1x01 Chapter One: The River's Edge
Welcome. I can’t believe we’re doing this. But I love Betty Cooper and I love sharing my (really very excellent, five star, people are saying) thoughts on Betty Cooper’s wardrobe, so really I am made for this task. (Also I’m unemployed.)
This will in no way hold a candle to Tom & Lorenzo’s most excellent, truly seminal Mad Style series, because I do not have the breadth nor the depth of their talent, nor Mad Men’s sophisticated and multifaceted storytelling capabilities—and neither does Riverdale.
(Where’s the fucking It’s Riverdale, Jughead gif when you want it?)
Tumblr media
Slap some Fresh Sugar Rosé on ur lips, tighten those ponytails, and let’s dive in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a p e a k CW character introduction. Wholesome all-American teen in her skivvies for no reason at all? Played for sex appeal? One hundo percent. They have a playbook and they stick to it.
This is a Natori Feathers bra and it’s a solid undergarment, almost universally flattering to all boob shapes & sizes, a real lift-and-separate situation. The first step to a successful outfit is a solid foundation; off to a good start, Elizabeth.
It is here we begin a recurring feature to this blog, what I shall call the I Own This count.
I Own This count: 3 (Yes, three of these, thank you)
Tumblr media
We don’t get a very good look at this outfit (no glimpse of the lower half at all), but it appears to be a semi-gauzy, lightweight, peachy? 🍑, sleeveless button-down. Uneventful, solid summer-wear, no commentary. Also: earrings that don’t really fit with Betty’s style guide going forward. But that’s what pilots are like: none of the sets match what they look like later and everyone’s still figuring shit out.
Tumblr media
Oh dis is cute. Look at those white kicks with the vulcanized rubber soles, the straight-leg denim with a hint of ankle. The print of the top (a bitty floral!) reminds me of a (slightly more skin-baring) top we’ll see in season 3 (should we ever get to that point idk guys I’m trying to find a job here.)
A l s o: Ms Reinhart’s hair looks quite shorter here than it does in the rest of the episode. I would not be surprised if this was a pick-up or reshoot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I sense a real theme of Betty wearing an outfit that she then covers with a cardigan. Put a pin in that thought.
Additionally, while we’ve all done it, a lightweight cardigan over a blouse doesn’t always work for keeping clean lines (peep the cap sleeves bunching up near the shoulder). Also also: it would seem she’s been dressed in a bra with an incorrect band size, or am I seeing things? Betty, where’d the Natori go?? Is it just a lavalier mic? So many questions.
Tumblr media
Our first glimpse of the River Vixens booty-shorts-and-baseball-tee practice uniform. Lipstick generously ‘donated’ by V (another titillating CW™ moment).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SCRUNCHIE. That’s the only thing I’d like to highlight here. Also I think we see this backpack again later in the season, which: nice, continuity, good for her. The CW™, as with the WB (rip) before it, is notorious for shows in which characters never wear a single item of clothing twice (the OG Charmed springs to mind), making one wonder about the depths of these fake peoples’ fake wallets. True commitment to realism. (Side note: bring back Veronica’s headbands, those are cute.)
Tumblr media
Look at these fucking perfect barrel curls, not a hair out of place. Very deliberate.
Tumblr media
A dress featured in a thousand fics, accessorized with a red pleatherish-looking clutch (every couple of years pink + red has a moment). Note the ~risque~ cutouts at the sides. How’d she sneak those past Alice??
Tumblr media
By wearing a cardigan over it, of course.
Tumblr media
These are defo Alice-approved heels, however.
Tumblr media
Later topped off with a baby blue bomber jacket or windbreaker (??) during that odd moment at god-knows-what-time-of-morning when everyone in the town, having stayed up all night without ever changing out of their party gowns, rolls up to Sweetwater to see Jason Blossom get fished out of the river. Small town entertainment, you take what you can get.
Summary: 6 outfits, 9 if you include variations in layering. Lots of pink (of course), cardigans, and ponytails. Sensible, Alice Cooper-approved shit, basically. Wardrobe team is still finding its footing with this character, but there are some themes here that we’ll see throughout season 1 and the rest of the show.
Is Betty a River Vixen??: yes
Best outfit: booty-shorts-and-baseball-tee, totally.

Have you ever read the Hunger Games series? Yep and watched all the movies. I was really into it at the time. When was the last time you ran into something? Hmm. I don’t recall. Do you enjoy dressing up? Nah. Do you live in the city or a rural area? I live in the city. Would you say you have a sense of style? My sense of style consists of mostly graphic tees and leggings, but also some Adidas clothes. And shoes.
What’s your biggest fear? This question comes up all the damn time. Have you ever been bitten by a wild animal? Nooo. Are you close to any of your cousins? Aww, I used to be close to a few of my cousins. Not anymore, though. :( That’s all my fault. I became really distant and withdrawn from friends and even family outside of my immediate family.  Have you ever been lost in the woods? No, thankfully. Where did you last travel? Disneyland back in February. Do you enjoy driving? I don’t drive.  What song did you last listen to? I mentioned this in a previous survey already, but I’ve had Savage by Megan the Stallion stuck in my head because of TikTok. If you have a job, how often do you work? I don’t have a job. What time do you normally go to sleep at night? For the past month I’ve been going to bed after 6AM. :X Do you watch a lot of movies? Hmm. Not a lot, no. I watch more TV shows. Do you like Tom Petty? ”Now I’m freeeeeee Free fallin’.” Would you rather have snow or rain? I love rainy days. It doesn’t snow here, but I wish it did. Do you own a lot of sweaters? I own a lot of sweatshirts. Have you ever tried rock-climbing? Well, no. For obvious reasons. Ever ridden in a police car? Nope. Favorite decade of music? That’s tough cause I like music that spans across decades, but I think the 90s and early 2000′s will hold a special spot. Have any of your best friends been your best friend longer than a year? My longest was my best friend of 15 years.  Ever witnessed a murder? Noooo.  Does your room have a ceiling fan? Yep. Have you ever tried blogging? Before Tumblr I had Xanga for a long time.  Favorite television channel? E!, MTV, The Hallmark Channel, TeenNick, TVLand, and the ID Channel. Have you ever lied under oath? I’ve never had to be under oath. What are your religious views? I’m a Christian. When did you last change your bed sheets? A week ago. Would you consider yourself a flirt? No. At what age do you plan to be married? I don’t plan on getting married. Do you eat a lot of junk food? Honestly, all I eat is sandwiches, ramen, eggs, and Wingstop. Sometimes pizza and pasta. When did you last go on vacation? I’ve answered this 3 times now tonight, but I went to Disneyland back in February. Are you resilient? I was when I was younger. Definitely not anymore. Have you ever failed a subject before? I failed one math course in community college and had to retake it again. I ended up doing a lot better the 2nd time. I honestly believe it’s because I had a better teacher. If so, what was the class? ^^^ Do you wear more bright or dull colors? Dull. Majority of my clothes are black. Do you know anyone who has attempted suicide? Yes. What’s your favorite quote? Blah. How many clocks are in your house? Like 20 including all the electronics.  Do you play any sports? Nope. What is your biggest life regret? I have a lot of those. Have you ever been injured in a car accident? No, thankfully. If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be? Well obviously right now I only want to be at home, but I look forward to the day I can go to the beach. Have you ever had highlights in your hair? Yeah, I had them for years. Favorite fast food restaurant? I’m not into fast food anymore like I used to be. I was a fast food junkie before. The only takeout I’m into is Wingstop. And pizza from a local place, but I haven’t had that in awhile. In what country were you born? US of A. Are your eyes more than one color? Nope, just brown. Have you ever caught something on fire? Something in the microwave once, something in the oven once, the tips of my hair.... What would you consider your biggest flaw? Oh boy where to start. What do you think your best quality is? I don’t know. Do you enjoy listening to others’ problems? I used to be the person people came to if they needed advice or just someone to talk to and I was good at it. I liked being there and helping any way I could. People told me they felt comfortable talking to me and I was easy to talk to. It could also be overwhelming and draining at times. Especially leading up to when I fell into a really low, dark place a few years ago. I couldn’t be that person anymore. I wasn’t in a good headspace. I pushed everyone away and became very distant and withdrawn. That was 4 years ago and I’m still out of that place. :/
Do you keep any plants in your house? Nope. What is your mother’s occupation? She’s a manager at Walgreens.  Do any of your friends like your musical style? My family and I share some musical interests. What are you most looking forward to? I wanna say this quarantine ending, but I know resuming life in the real world would also be making me anxious when the time comes. How to take over a project halfway
Tumblr media
PMP 2021 study guide-How to take over a project halfway
Abstract: The article draws on the project management experience of domestic and foreign companies, combined with my own experience as a project manager, and talks about my understanding and experience on how to successfully take over a midway project. Yinheedu.com
Keywords: project management; stakeholder; communication; risk; demand; change
With the globalization of the economy and the advent of the information technology era, the competitive environment faced by enterprises is no longer limited to a certain region or a certain country, but facing global competition. In order to become an evergreen tree in the economic wave, an enterprise must continue to innovate and change, and adjust its strategic direction, organizational structure, and personnel structure.
These changes often make employees feel the crisis of unemployment and the pressure of work. Once the company's strategic planning and internal management can't keep up with the changes in the external environment, employees feel that there is a lack of development opportunities in the company, and a large number of job-hopping personnel appear. The IT industry is an emerging industry where young people gather, and experience has become a scarce resource in this industry. For the same job hiring, people with work experience will definitely have a greater competitive advantage than those without work experience.
At the same time, the salary of project managers who grew up in a company did not increase much. In order to get a high salary, job-hopping became the first choice. The departure of project managers, in addition to serious brain drain, has a direct impact on the ongoing projects.
In the IT industry, most of the work is organized through projects. Although it is common to use projects for management in the IT industry, its performance in the field of project management is not so good. According to three-year statistics from the School of Business Administration of the Technical University of Munich, only about 50% of large-scale IT projects were completed as scheduled.
Yinheedu.com
The loss of personnel, especially the impact of the project manager's midway departure on the project is obvious. In the workplace, we often encounter a project manager who resigns and leaves the project, and we need to take over, or we may move to another company and need to take over a midway project that is being carried out. So, with the project failure rate so high, what do we need to do to avoid failure?
The elements and steps to pay attention to when taking over the project
1. Get the support of senior leaders
For a project, whether it is a newly started project or a halfway project, the support of the leader is very important. The adjustments in project funding, project team members' needs, and plans all require the support of senior leaders. Their attitude may also influence the degree of participation of employees in their department. When the leader tells you that you need to take over the project, you may not know much about the project. At this time, you need strong support from the leader, such as getting support from the leader in project data transfer, plan adjustment, and personnel deployment.
2. teamwork, get the support of the project team
The project is a process of group collaboration, and the success of the project is inseparable from the joint efforts of the project team members. When a project is in operation, the project manager is suddenly changed, which is not a small shock for the project members, and it creates certain confusion for the future direction of the project.
In terms of project risks, project team members need to adapt to the behavior style of a new leader, and they also have doubts about the new project manager's cooperation and management capabilities. For the project manager, a process of familiarization with the project environment is needed, which undoubtedly increases the risk of the project.
PMP 2021 study guide-How to take over a project halfway
After taking over the project, an internal meeting of the project team should be held as soon as possible. The meeting should preferably be held with the participation of senior leaders. During the meeting, the announcement of changes in project manager personnel, the introduction between project team members, the current status of the project and the instructions and procedures for handover of project materials, etc., should all become the main points of the meeting.
In the meeting, it is necessary to actively affirm the contributions and efforts of the original project manager and project team members, inspire everyone to continue to provide strategies for the success of the project and make corresponding efforts.
3. Collect project information from various aspects
To take over a midway project, get as much information as possible. According to the stage of the project, the following materials are required but not limited to: project contract, demand specification, demand analysis specification, project plan (budget plan, communication plan), WBS, proposal, etc., question list, stakeholder communication record.

Even if you can't get all of it, the project contract, requirements, and plan must be obtained.
If the previous project manager has not left, try to communicate with him at this time and get as much information and information as possible from him. How much the former project manager helped you largely determines how fast you master the project.
You can make use of personal relationships, the help of leaders, and the company's system to complete the handover of the project. In the project that I took over a listed communications company, I patiently listened to the grievances and dissatisfaction of the original project manager, and moderately comforted and sympathized.
During the conversation, I collected a lot of project information and the crux of the problem. At the same time, he also talked about the deeds he encountered in project management. Because there were more common languages, the relationship between the two parties was quickly shortened. Of course, I did a good job of making friends, and even some information that I did not have helped me to ask that colleague, and took the initiative to leave a few more working days for the handover. So far, we still keep a certain amount of contact and often do project management, life and other aspects of communication.
After obtaining the information, the project team should verify the correctness of the information as soon as possible. At this time, you can consult the person who provided the information as soon as possible if there are any problems with the information. To write a list of documents obtained with the information, signed by both parties.
4. Obtain customer understanding and support
The change of project manager has the greatest impact on the customer. If the former project manager did not make obvious mistakes, the customer is generally unwilling to change the project manager, and many contracts have written: "The project manager cannot be changed unilaterally". If they have no choice but to change, it is very common for customers to resist the new project manager, or even be negative and angry.
Before visiting the customer, it is necessary to carefully analyze the impact of the customer's various stakeholders on the project and the customer's requirements for the project from the previous project manager, project management members and project data. Collect the existing problems of the project and negotiate the methods in advance, objectively analyze the deviations of the project in demand, schedule, quality, scope, etc., and anticipate the progress of the project. Make a project goal in advance, strive to achieve the effect when talking with the customer, and obtain factors that are beneficial to your side in the game.
PMP 2021 study guide-How to take over a project halfway
I took over a project halfway through. The progress of the project is seriously lagging behind, the morale of the members of the project team is low, the senior management is also pessimistic about the prospect of the project and the client is extremely dissatisfied with the quality and progress of the project. The project manager chose to resign under tremendous pressure. After communicating with the internal staff, I visited the client.
First of all, I expressed my deep apologies to the customer for the delay of the project schedule. Then, objectively analyzed the problems of unclear project requirements, spread of scope, and staff fatigue caused by excessively long construction period, and made a commitment to actively promote the project work in a serious and responsible manner, and request the customer to provide a unified interface.
To standardize demand, and hope that both parties will adjust their plans and carry out phased construction. During the conversation, the customer was also introduced to the difficulties of the project and asked the customer to understand the current situation. The client became very annoyed with the replacement of the project manager and complained about our company and the project team.
After listening to the objective and factual analysis, I also hope to promote the progress of the project with a positive attitude. The customer mentioned that some functional requirements need to be completed urgently. After understanding the urgent background of these requirements, I will conduct a preliminary analysis of these requirements from the customer's perspective, and promise to ensure their most urgent and basic needs.
PMP 2021 study guide-How to take over a project halfway
And requested two working days to analyze the workload, coordinate resources, and promised to reply to users within two working days. The client also mentioned that deleting individual requirements does not require production. In the second half of the conversation, I asked if these urgent requirements are made, can we do an acceptance first. Because the project progress is lagging behind and the cost is overrun, the entire project team and leaders are under great pressure. If there is no progress, it will be very difficult to apply for resources.
After patiently communicating, the customer hesitated for a long time and finally agreed. After the meeting, I immediately wrote the meeting minutes and asked the client to sign. After the customer signed the meeting minutes, I took the customer's commitment and conducted an internal mobilization meeting for the project team based on the current status of the project. The project team members saw the short-term goals and hopes, and while hesitating, they also said one after another: If the customer agrees
After acceptance, the leader can allocate resources to fulfill these requirements. After the meeting, immediately report to the senior leadership and support and support in accordance with the current project situation. As a result, with the support of the company's leaders and the customer, the project team members once again worked together and finally completed the customer's urgent needs. After half a month, the acceptance was successfully displayed and the payment was paid.
Concluding remarks
Taking over a project halfway, due to various problems, it is often on the verge of failure or has failed to some extent. So taking over a midway project requires greater challenges. Of course, although the project is difficult, it is also a challenge, and it is also an opportunity. Opportunities are always reserved for those who are prepared! It is a hero who always has to go through ups and downs, and see a rainbow after the storm. It is not terrible to take over a project on the way. Use the right method and a good attitude to welcome the project. After success, you will find special pride and your management level has made another leap.

Most people would be fine with Taylor coming out while attached to Toe if she was actually dating him, but she's not, she doesn't even like him as a friend and she has even been leaving Easter Eggs since Rep Era to let us know she thinks extremely lowly of him as a person for riding her coattails.
We'd also be less upset at the thought of Taylor coming out while attached to Toe if she didn't push such a misogynistic narrative for Toe, and yes, Taylor herself is deliberately feeding the misogynistic flames in her fandom on purpose with how she portrays Toe as a "relationship" in interviews and stunt articles.
If she comes out attached to him after all the bullshit misogyny she's shoved down everyone's throat over Toe, practically none of her damn fans are going to accept her coming out because they'll just Tweet about how they think Toe needs to *beat* her back into being a "good" woman; when a few of her fans thought Taylor made a domestic violence handsignal in an interview, a stupidly big amount of her fans said it's Toe's right to beat Taylor if he wants to and that if it turns out he has been beating her through their entire 'relationship', then he's done a 'good job' turning her into a 'real' woman with his fists
Yes Toe is fake, but she’s never going to tell the gp that. I was talking about her public coming out narrative, not the actual truth.
I’m going to be nitpicky for a moment. I think you mean sexism not misogyny. Misogyny means “dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women.” Sexism means “prejudice or discrimination based on sex or gender.” Sexism is mainly systemic. Misogyny is mainly hate speech and is a subsection of sexism.
We’ll have to agree to disagree about the sexism. There is nothing sexist or misogynistic about what Taylor has said about T*e. I remember the C*lvin days, she was far more gushy then. Swifties have been completely out of line for years, and her public narratives are for the gp not toxic swiffers.
For the record, I strongly disagree with the WB narrative and how it was executed. But even then, objectively, co-creating art with your partner isn’t sexist.
Also, the recent Vanity Fair article - he’s a brief mention in an article all about Taylor and her journey; and all she says is that she talked to him, her family, and friends about politics and he "supported" her decision to speak out. She’s given Todrick far more credit than T*e.
The Patriarchy is partially founded on damning vulnerability and our society’s toxic independence has serious consequences. Portraying T*e as a healthy and supportive relationship will never be sexist; and holding her responsible for the media and fans - even with her team planting articles - is to blame her for our corrupt society and it’s systems. She’s consistently told fans over the years to never believe anything the media and ‘sources’ say.
From the book “Not Under My Roof: Parents, Teens, and the Culture of Sex” by Amy Schalet:
The first section of this chapter examines cultural traditions that shaped the perception and experiences of the changes of the 1960s and '70s in the United States and the Netherlands. Out of the confluence of different cultural traditions, the social policies they influenced, and the different experiences of the upheavals of the unruly decades emerged what might be called an “adversarial” and an “interdependent” individualism. [cut]
A key difference between the two individualisms pertains to the relationship between the self and others. In their 1985 classic Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life, sociologist Robert Bellah and his colleagues assert that “individualism lies at the very core of American culture.”5 Such individualism celebrates the sacredness of individuals and their judgement, self-reliance, and self-expression. But inherent in American individualism is also a tension between autonomy and society.6 Indeed, write Bellah and colleagues, American individualism includes a fear that “society may overwhelm the individual and destroy any chance of autonomy unless he stands against it.”7 That fear is accompanied by the belief that, to attain full autonomy and to commit to others and contribute to society, “one must be able to stand alone, not needing others, not depending on their judgements, and not submitting to their wishes.”8 [cut]
On the one hand, the celebration of self-reliance – and the stigmatization of dependency – have inhibited the institutionalization of income replacement programs that have made day-to-day living since the 1960s more secure in Europe.11 On the other hand, the United States has long imposed harsh justice on those deprived of freedom.12 Lacking a notion of membership in a wider society apart from individual volition, Americans see no alternative to punishment when individual volition proves insufficient to regulate behavior. Following the 1960s, the tradition of harsh justice grew into what David Garland has called “a culture of control”: the divestment from public welfare accompanied by rapid growth in incarceration rates, especially since the start of the War on Drugs, which has imprisoned a large segment of population, often on minor charges.13 [cut]
Writing in 1987, North American anthropologist Peter Stephenson observes that “the concept of self with respect to others in the Netherlands is simultaneously intensely egalitarian and highly individualistic.” [cut] And yet, an equally pervasive cultural value is that of functioning and living in close interaction and cooperation with others, a potential contradiction that is resolved by a particular conception of the self as “a discrete individual who can nonetheless work well with others.”15 [cut]
Indeed rather than view equalization and individualism as a threat to the social fabric, prominent Dutch sociologists of the 1970s and 1980s argued that people were becoming more dependent upon one another, leading to the “emancipation” of previously subordinate groups – children, workers, women, and homosexuals.19 They saw a new mode of regulating social relations in private and public life – negotiations between more or less equal parties who exercise self-restraint and willingness to consider each other's needs.20 Theory reflected public policy. Following the expansion of the welfare state in the 1950s and '60s, Dutch society of the 1970s and '80s underwent one of the strongest equalizing trends in the industrial world.21 And the assumption that people would, under controlled circumstances, self-regulate their impulses was reflected in a lenient penal policy, including the tolerance of soft drug use, which was institutionalized in 1976.22 [cut]
Many scholars and lay individuals in the United States harbored misgivings about the changes wrought by shifts in sexual and authority relations in part because, ironically, the conception of the self, celebrated and feared in middle-class culture, does not provide tools to conceptualize and foster self-restraint and social bonds without institutions that can hold individuals in check: marriage, religion, and the justice system. In the Netherlands, by contrast, lay individuals, scholars, and policymakers embraced the gains of “modernization” because they could draw on cultural resources to reconcile growing self-determination with strengthening of social bonds: traditions of inter-reliance and cooperation between elites lent themselves as means for exerting “soft” control and maintaining stability at home and in the polity in a more democratic society.23
And What's Wrong With Being Independent? by Psychology Today
We have to remember how many people voted for Trump and that the music and film industries are NOT systemically progressive. I’m been closeted, sexually assaulted, and abused by people with socioeconomic power over me; and while as a sales person I’m on the other end of the ladder, I know how it feels to be a ‘product’ owned by a brand. Just this week a customer ripped me and my coworker apart because she was an idiot and almost ripped her coat on our display. She told us outright that if her coat had ripped she would have had us punished, and we couldn’t say a word against her because ‘the customer is always right’. Unfortunately, this kind of behavior is not a one off incident.
Even with Taylor’s hints, we’re only seeing 5% of the picture. She’s not perfect, but I wouldn’t still be a fan 14 years later if I didn’t believe in her character. And in general I have very strong feelings about blaming victims (or individual people) instead of the system. Hitler and Trump would never have gained power if there weren’t countless social systems and a massive audience supporting them.
Anyway. Just my two cents.

Environmental Degradation as another Reason for Poverty: the Role of International Financial ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Sofia Manukyan
Although there are many reasons for poverty, one of the least discussed (at least in Armenia) is environmental degradation.
Studies show that especially energy and natural resource projects, including dam and hydropower plant construction, mining, etc. result in “new poverty”. This term is used specifically for describing the deterioration of locals’ socio-economic situation as a result of environmental degradation. Some of the factors leading to new poverty are evictions or creation of such conditions, which do not allow for living in a clean and healthy environment as a result of loss of land and water quality, loss of job, property, habitat, as well as identity loss related to that habitat, absence of socialization and risks of marginalization, suspension of education, risks of non-availability of healthcare or social services, as well as particular vulnerability to these risks of specific groups such as elderly, women or indigenous groups.
According to a study by the World Bank (WB), the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society in different countries form the majority of displaced people as a result of hydropower plant construction. For example, a study of over 100 development projects in India showed that nearly half of 1.6 million displaced persons were tribal populations. As a result, many indigenous persons who were already poor become even poorer as a result of forced evictions. This is the result of dependence of indigenous people on nature, for example, rivers, therefore, any project degrading the environment threatens their socio-economic situation.
And yet according to a joint study published in 2015 by International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and The Huffington Post around 3 million 350 thousand persons were forced from their homes and lands since they lived in the path of a World Bank project. This number could be much higher since according to the investigative journalists the bank not always counts the number of people negatively affected by its projects.
The study reveals that only in 2009-2013 World Bank invested some 50 billion USD in projects graded as high risk for their irreversible social or environmental impacts. The study also shows that specifically farmers, fishermen, forest inhabitants and indigenous communities have been hit hard by these projects. Even some current and past employees of the bank mention that the WB standards were often compromised due to pressures within the bank to approve big projects. They note that success of the bank is measured by the number of financed programs and therefore additional requirements that increase the costs of the project are usually ignored.
There are also studies showing the connection between environmental degradation and poverty in Armenia. One such study published in 2013 by the American University of Armenia shows that despite the economic growth, mining sector also contributes to inequality and poverty in Armenia. This study as well highlights that harms caused by the mines are often underestimated, while the mining operators do not take into account the negative consequences, which in its turn results in deterioration of the environment and local resources. The author also mentions cases when residents had to sell their properties to the mining companies for lower price, which according to him creates potential risks leading to poverty. This risk increases also as a result of absence of health insurance in mines as a result of which the miners and their families may face additional burdens of healthcare costs.
Another example is Mongolia, which despite having one of the fastest growing economies in the world thanks to its natural resources, has one third of its population living in poverty. In Olu Tolgoi project a number of international financial institutions and even diplomatic missions are involved. Olu Tolgoi is the biggest gold and copper mine in Mongolia. This project concerned not only the affected communities, but also the international civil society due to insufficient environmental impact assessment that lacked tailing management, mine closure and recultivation plans, as well as due to diversion of the Undai river which is the sole source of surface water in the area. Its diversion is estimated to impact the ecosystem, the locals and the herders.
Apart from World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC), European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and several major Anglo-Australian and Canadian corporations, the U.S. embassy in Mongolia as well as several other states such as UK and Canada were also involved in this project. According to leaked information the mining corporations approached the mentioned states suggesting to influence the Mongolian government in order the latter stayed out of the mining business while creating a transparent, predictable, best practice-based, rule of law approach to regulating and profiting from its resources.
Moreover, leaked correspondence from the U.S. embassy shows that the U.S. interests in this project were due to the project creating a big market for the U.S. equipment and other goods of about 200 million USD. As for Mongolia, the government had changed its laws on water, roads, windfall profits tax and corporate tax for this project, but it owned only 34 percent shares of this project. Having no sufficient money for covering its expenses in the project, the Mongolian government took a loan from one of the corporations operating the mine. As a result, some financial reports highlight that Mongolia will gain little income from this mining thus leaving no positive effect on economy or population of Mongolia.
This case clearly reminds the gold mining project planned in Amulsar, where international financial institutions, as well as diplomatic missions were involved, while Armenian government had amended laws favoring corporate interests.
Various reports and analysts view such cooperation between the states and the private sector as promoting and protecting corporate interests to the detriment of democracy. Moreover, international financial institutions often provide loans in exchange for institutional and policy reforms, which result in states cutting public wages, increasing value added taxes or introducing regressive tax systems, weakening labor rights protection mechanisms, cutting or privatizing social services, etc. Such policies not only lead to inequality, but they also threaten the sovereignty of the state by preventing states from independently forming their policies, as well as by preventing states from implementing their human rights obligations.
Such cooperation is also concerning since any non-substantiated loans continue increasing the state’s foreign debt, which subsequently decreases spending in the spheres of environmental protection, healthcare, etc. as in case of Armenia.
And yet, despite financial institutions keep claiming about their international high standards, their investments continue threatening the climate. For example, European Investment Bank (EIB) announced to play a leading role in European Green Deal, which foresees eliminating Europe’s effect on climate change by 2050. Despite this, even the bank’s president announced that bank’s methodologies measuring climate investments are sometimes misleading resulting in mainly box-ticking. Generally, this bank is accused of lack of transparency, failing to address applications of those affected by its projects, implementing projects through companies that avoid taxes or are registered in offshores, of having weak oversight of human rights protection, etc.
Sadly, Asian financial institutions also follow their western counterparts. In 2018 the People’s Convention on Infrastructure Financing took place in Mumbai. Civil society representatives from India participated in it, and a resolution was adopted mentioning that investment policies of Asian development banks are as undemocratic and deteriorating the environment and people’s socio-economic situation as in case of western financial institutions. They mention the investments of China led Asia Infrastructure and Investment Bank in India specifically in construction of towns and roads which resulted in displacement of locals and their impoverishment due to loss of their lands. The resolution also mentions that a scenario similar to other countries is observed in India when the state keeps claiming shortage of resources for public welfare – social, healthcare, educational sectors, and yet they spend public money on megaprojects of international financial institutions even when these projects are not economically or else justified.
The geography of investments of Asian financial institutions grows as well. A socially and environmentally controversial project is planned in neighboring Georgia – construction of hydropower plant on Nenskra river in Upper Svaneti. Apart from EIB and EBRD, Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Korea Development Bank are also involved in this controversial project. There is a significant opposition to this project for both the risks of negative impact on the environment, as well as for evicting the indigenous Svan communities from their lands and depriving them of their livelihoods.
More research on the link between environmental degradation and poverty, as well as on the role of international financial institutions in it, and of course policy recommendations to the state and the financial institutions can be found in a recently published study. It was implemented with the full support of Open Society Foundations – Armenia’s Policy Research Fellowship Program.
