Ki, 29, was the captain for South Korea when the team was led by Shin’s predecessor Uli Stielike, who was sacked June 2017. After Shin became the head coach, Kim Young-gwon of Guangzhou Evergrande briefly served as the South Korean captain, but Ki took over the role after he recovered from knee surgery.

At the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) E-1 Championship and pre-World Cup training camp in Turkey, where Europe-based players were not called up, Jang Hyun-soo of FC Tokyo wore the captain’s armband.

Ghana FA congratulates Frank Acheampong on appointment as captain of Tianjin Teda

  Ghana FA has congratulated Tianjin Teda winger Frank Acheampong following his appointment as the club's new captain. The former Anderlecht star becomes the first Ghanaian to captain a team in the Chinese top-flight division. Frank was awarded the captaincy as a result of his hard work, dedication, commitment, exceptional leadership skills and most importantly the quality he continues to demonstrate on the field. “I’m particularly honoured to be made captain of this great club, it has come at a very challenging time where the club is struggling very early in the season, and I hope that with a collective effort we can turn around our season," Acheampong said after being named the club's captain by coach Uli Stielike. Following the announcement, the Ghana FA has congratulated the pacey winger:"Ghana international @frakj18 has been named captain of @chineseleague side @tianjintedafc Congratulations to Frank on this historic feat!
