LIVE: National Day of Mourning 2022
Plymouth, Mass., Nov. 24, 2022
Sponsored by United American Indians of New England (UAINE)
WHAT IS NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING? An annual tradition since 1970, Day of Mourning is a solemn, spiritual and highly political day. Many of us fast from sundown the day before through the afternoon of that day. We are mourning our ancestors and the genocide of our peoples and the theft of our lands. NDOM is a day when we mourn, but we also feel our strength in action. Over the years, participants in Day of Mourning have buried Plymouth Rock a number of times, boarded the Mayflower replica, and placed ku klux klan sheets on the statue of William Bradford, etc.

Today is a National Day of Mourning. Please make sure to center Indigenous voices first and foremost, today and always. Check out the shared link along with @mahtowin1 on both IG and Twitter as one resource for more info & ways to show support to our Indigenous family. My personal ruminations of today are below:
Please take this to heart; mourning is not at odds with celebration of life, of family, of gratitude. Grief and gratitude are not incompatible. Grief and gratitude are hand in hand in the practice of mourning, which is also a practice of healing. It is in times of mourning that we reflect most on our lives, our loved ones, and all that we might be grateful for. Conscious mourning is an invitation to honor those things. To celebrate.
So, if you must celebrate Thanksgiving today, please, take the time to educate yourselves and your families on what it is our Indigenous family is mourning. Take this time so that you may reflect collectively on the insurmountable losses and grief faced by the original Indigenous peoples of these lands. Loss of sacred lands, homes and havens, loss of human life, communities, cultures, languages. The grief soaked Trail of Tears. The grief of babies ripped from the loving arms of their families, to be stripped of their rights to heritage, to community. Name the genocide for what it is. Take time to sit with the violence of our shared colonial histories, here on these lands of the "United States of America" as well as abroad. Take the time to reflect on the ways this violent heritage persists even today.
May your time today with family (and food) be as a wake grounded in the collective mourning of Indigenous people. May you celebrate all you have to be grateful for anchored in that mourning. May you reflect on all the ways things could have—should have—been different and how we may challenge ourselves and our communities towards better. May you take the time to sit with the loved ones you still have the privilege of today, and reflect in earnest on the intergenerational traumas that not one of us can escape. Take the time to learn from our shared histories, from one another, take the time to heal, and to grow. Take the time to celebrate where each of us has come from, and where we might go. Take the time to reflect and foster accountability so that we might all leave this plane of existence better off than we have entered it. A feat that cannot be achieved without all of the above. Take the time to ground one another in humility and compassion, to do the work, and to share the burden in doing so. That is what family, what community, is for. To share the load of growth towards building better selves, towards building a better future for all.
My mother took us to PowWows and demonstrations of Indigenous practice, of creative joy. She got us books about Indigenous people and histories. For most of my childhood she collected Indigenous arts and jewelry. There were admittedly ways in which this erred into appropriation and exotification of Indigenous culture and people, I won't defend that, but she tried. She tried when there was little accessible public discourse to guide us in the paths of least harm. On that note, be sure that you are centering Indigenous voices today and always. Let those be the voices that guide you in truth and healing, and towards work centered in harm reduction.
My mother continues to try. It is for those types of efforts that I continue to try with my family, despite harms done which cannot be undone. It is for the witnessing of those efforts that I do not just give up on the world. We cannot undo all harms done, but we can try. We must try.

Dar theid thu, lìonaidh ur eangan le feur.
Carson a bheil e uaine, cho ar leibh?  An robh e cho nuair a rugadh e?  Carson uaine?  Carson nach bheil dearg?  no liath?
Ach ‘s e dàth an ùire a tha ann an uine, na beo-rudan, na beatha.
‘S e. ‘s e.
Bhi sinn a’ maiseachadh ar tallachan leis, a’ dathachadh ar aodaich.  Ach sgiùreamaid e nan tigeadh e thar na clachan-càsaidh.  Dar blàthaidh e fon ar tonn* fuilichidh e a-mach.  Agus, dar lorg sinn gu bheil* ar amasan air ceann rathaidhean nas fhaide ri ar càsan... geàrraidh e sìos.  Curaidh às sinn dha, sgaoilidh a-mach tharis ‘is mùchaidh e le ar brùthan.*  Ach tillidh e.  Cha marbh e.  No cha fheith, cha dheàn foill - tarraingeadh tu às e le am buan, agus a-maireach, sin e, a’ liùsadh a-steach, aig na oirrean.
Nuar sinn a-mach a’ lorg dearg, tha uiane a’ thiginn.  ‘S e dàth drùise a tha ann an dearg, is ‘s e uaine a bhi a’ fàgail ‘na rotal -  ann an crìdhe, ann an broinn.  ‘S e uaine a tha ann air meath dèine, air bàs gail, air ar bàs*.
Dar theid thu lìonaidh ur eangan le feur.  Cùirnichidh coinneach ur càrn.  Nuair a’ ghrian ag eirigh* sgaoilidh uaine thar uile, le gach tuar ‘is snuadh.
Barraichidh an ùrrarachd do chlaidheamh; cuir do airgead, cuir do bhaideal, agus strìochdaidh uile* rudan a tha do ghaol air de.
Do thonn.
Do cnàmhan.
Do bhuadh.

Tha am film seo math fhèin agus tha mi air a’ coimhead an monolog sin uair is uair a bharrachd.  Nì mi dàn leis mu dheireadh thall, ach bha mi ag iarraidh e sa ghàidhlig air tùs.
Cuiribh mi ceart, (gu h-àraid air:
*blàthaidh e fur an tonn
*Dar ar lorgainn gu bheil...

The Birdcage's power dynamics are so funny to me. You've got the worst of the worst, hardened criminals led by the most ruthless and powerful of them all, imprisoned for the rest of their lives and with nothing to hold back. People kill, people die, every day is dangerous down there, and the cell block leaders are the ones who overcome this and rise to the top. And then all of them have to respect and play along with a genuinely insane faerie roleplayer who constantly spouts cryptic bullshit and has been there longer than anywhere else and whoops! You didn't speak like a member of Victorian nobility and say shit like "thine" and "perchance" while you talked with her, and you dared to insinuate faeries aren't real. Rookie mistake kiddo, your soul is forfeit. Glaistig Uaine is holding a gun to the heads of everyone in the birdcage and demanding they attend tea parties and go along with her roleplay and I think that's just wonderful. Queen shit.

Worm Arc 16 second half thoughts (after Defiant interlude, 16.7 to end):
I'm very glad I split this arc where I did cause WHAT THE FUCK
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!
WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK WHAT THE FUCK
Tattletale . . . the entire time . . . in secret!
And Coil's whole crazy plan at the town hall debate!
And and and Rachel held Taylor's hand and it was gay BUT IT WAS SAD GAY!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the bug box (I'm sorry, "The Famine Engine") what the fuck
And Taylor was shot and almost lit on fire and she become a fucking terror demon scary bug monster and got away from all the people and set off some grenades and and
passes out
...
ALSO MY DAUGHTER KILLED COIL! SHOT HIM RIGHT IN THE HEAD!
Taylor sees her dad and argues with his friends a little and realizes that things aren't as clear as she thought they were maybe but whatever I just want to get to know Lacey better. For reasons.
I knew something would happen at the town hall. Once Dragon was taken care of I figured it would be Coil but I wasn't sure what he would do and I didn't expect this. I thought he would mostly be trying to take out Skitter or something.
Happy to see Uber and Leet again, even if they are working for the asshole. They are fun.
Getting more info on Leet's power and I'm even more fascinated then I was before. He couldn't make the teleporter work if it was putting the target into instant danger, like a bomb or a vat of acid. Wild. I wanna know more.
ALSO COIL LEGIT CONSIDERED DROPPING SKITTER INTO A VAT OF ACID!
He really did go full supervillain right at the end. Monologuing, using cheesy lines, stopping the execution of his enemies when one of them yells "Wait!" and letting them talk. Crazy elaborate plans. Good for him I guess.
The Wards new "teleport without swapping matter" tech is quite fancy and it can apparently do a heck of a lot of people at once! Which I could see becoming a big deal. I had initially assumed it was Kid Win who made it (since he did the same with is guns before) but with how stuff has bounced around I'm legit not sure.
OH AND I KNEW I LOVED CIRCUS FOR A REASON, WHAT A WONDERFUL LITTLE GENDERQUEER! THEY GET A PASS FOR STABBING SOME PEOPLE CAUSE THEY DESERVE TO GET TO STAB A FEW PEOPLE.
I had fully called Coil being Thomas Calvert by now, so that itself wasn't a surprise. But I hadn't expected Thomas to have gotten back to working with the PRT. Makes sense if he can make it work, that is a wonderful source of power.
Too bad Tattletale pulled the fucking rug out from under you Thomas!
Taylor leaving her dad at the hospital without stopping to see him is unfortunate I guess, but not really unexpected. I've kinda given up on their relationship getting repaired. Besides who needs Danny when shes got me!?
Oh and I guess Taylor can't really see now. Cool. I'm sure that will just get better right away with no issues! /s
I mean it isn't really a huge deal for her vs most people. But still.
OH AND SKITTER'S DEAL WITH COIL WHEN HE WAS GOING TO KILL THEM ALL INCLUDED "Ta
Oh and Skitter's deal with Coil to turn off the dead man's switch included "Take care of Bitch's dogs!" GAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
And "Tattletale gets to live!" like ya ok sure it was all so she could get Tattletale here and such I get that but whatever, it is also GAY! GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY!!!!!!!!!!
But for real Tats has been coming in with the fucking long con OH MY GOD. I legit didn't see it coming. Coil losing this arc? Sure, maybe not likely but possible. Coil dying? Again, was surprising but not shocking. But Tattletale having payed off have the mercs in a carefully planned coup in the works since Arc 3 at a minimum? Blindsided me. Just hit by a bus. HOLY SHIT!!!
Fake Skitter shot Bitch!!!! AHHHHH!!! But she was ok. And the speed of her accepting that real Skitter didn't do it and not staying mad at her!!!! GAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!
Seriously though Skitter breaking out of the house she was teleported into and getting past all those troops? God. Using the swarm speech for physiological warfare? Chef's kiss
I wonder how Cauldron is feeling with Coil dead? I don't know exactly what they needed him for but he sure ain't doing it now.
And Dinah at the end!! Just me sobbing.
I'm sure the whole thing with Noelle (or should I use my cape name for her when she's on a rampage - Traveler in a Vault, or TiaV) will just blow over and won't be a bigger deal than arc 8 in the end. Everything is fine.
Marquis interlude thoughts:
TINY PRISON! I love tiny prison.
Look I'm sorry I don't make the rules but Marquis and Lung are totally gay for each other. They are both terrible people. I don't ship them because I want to, I ship them because there is no other option. I do what I have to do.
Glaistig Uaine is my new favorite. She is terrifying and I love her. Forget Bonesaw's passangers or Coil's agents, they're called head fairies now.
I'm sure Amy and Glaistig Uaine working together in the future won't be bad at all.

Since no one else has made a post about it yet, I want to explain how Normal I Am about the deeply weird sort-of-friendship between Riley, Amy, Ciara, and Jamie Rinke that shows up in Ward. Like, they complement each other’s characters so well it’s unreal. If they could have actually had time to develop their friendship, I would’ve read Ward more than once.
(Disclaimer: I haven’t read Ward in a while, so correct me if I misremember something)
All of them are people who deeply clung to their childhoods, or just weren’t able to grow up. In Riley’s and Ciara’s cases, they literally forced themselves to stay as children. To go a bit deeper, Riley was forced into her childlike persona by Jack, and retains that act for self preservation. While she makes major progress in Worm after Jack’s defeat, Ward shows her backsliding and falling into old behaviors and mannerisms. She never wanted to be Bonesaw, but that persona is so deeply ingrained in her that she has trouble moving on.
Ciara is a bit harder, since we know so little about her life before triggering. Her interlude tells us that her affection for Scion was a coping mechanism to deal with whatever was going on in her life at the time, and since her powers raise the dead, and since her interlude implies that she was “surviving by her own means,” I think that Ciara’s trigger event was something related to her parent(s) dying. Her obsession with Scion locked her into a childish mindset until he proved to not be the perfect parent she saw. Ciara needed to be a child to stave off her trauma.
Jaime Rinke, the great Nilbog, presents the same issue as Ciara. We know that he was an isolated person who, upon being fired from his job, triggered and soon after wiped out the population of Ellisburg to make way for his own goblin kingdom. In Worm, we see that his town and its inhabitants are decorated in a very juvenile way, with whimsical distorted trees and giant-donged monsters. Jaime himself acts petulant and self absorbed as Nilbog. In fact, he seems to have degraded further over the course of the years. Going from a genuinely formidable combatant to a lazy tyrant who can’t even be bothered to eat with his own body. He improves in Ward, getting more lucid with actual human interaction, but that escapist fantasy still lingers. Jaime regressed into a childish state to deal with his isolation.
Ah, Amy. She initially doesn’t seem to fit in with the others, but she’s just as immature as any of them. Her issue here is wanting to go back to the way things were with Victoria. She won’t accept that she’s done the things she has and that she’ll never have Victoria’s affection again. She ignores it, downplays it, makes excuses for herself. Even when Victoria herself outright states she hates Amy for what she did to her, Amy still holds onto hope that she can somehow find a way to convince Victoria to love her again. After all, you can’t go from being emotionally dependent on someone to over them in an instant, especially when you don’t really have any good replacements for that affection. Amy refuses to let go of her nostalgic fantasies and accept that she and Victoria aren’t the sisters they were in Brockton Bay.
In each other, they could see the things they need to see, that they can’t find anywhere else. Amy sees three people who embodied her worst fears about herself becoming better people and coming to terms with themselves. Jamie sees equals who can finally, actually disagree with him after years of ruling a world of doormats. Ciara sees fallible, human people who really care about her and like her as much as she likes them. And Riley finally has a family. Instead of just playing house like she did with the nine, she has people who she can relate to, even some people she hurt, who forgave her.

riley absolutely cackles after izuku tells her about monoma, because the fact his class has "a one-sided rivalry with a diet glastiq uaine!" is the most hilarious shit she's heard all month.
izuku finds this fact equal parts amusing and annoying, because it opens the door for so many comebacks he can't use. "bold words for a bargain-bin fairie queen" could be the sickest burn he's ever said but none of his classmates would understand why :(

Taylors whole naming situation only gets funnier the more of Worm you read. Like. She helps take down motherfucking LUNG on her first night out and the Undersiders & Armsmaster are like???? who the hell are u??? and she
she tells them her cape name is bug. Like fuck it I dunno just call me Bug Girl yeah it’s fine whatever
and she ends up with Skitter because it’s in the right sweet spot between scary and pathetic- and like? she makes it work??
people unironically fear a fifteen year old called Skitter. Skitter 1v1′s Leviathan. Skitter fights and contributes to the defeat of like half the slaughterhouse nine and almost every gang in the city. Skitter kills Alexandria.
Like. Skitter. as in scurries. like a rat or a cockroach. it’s hilarious.

We did not simply fade into the background as the Thanksgiving myth says. We have survived and flourished. We have persevered. The very fact that you are here is proof that we did not vanish. Our very presence frees this land from the lies of the history books and the mythmakers. We will remember and honor all of our ancestors in the struggle who went before us. We will speak truth to power as we have been doing since the first Day of Mourning in 1970.

One of my favorite moments during Arc 27 of Worm:
Tumblr media
Eidolon was the most powerful parahuman in the past, Glaistig Uaine is currently the most powerful, Taylor becomes the most powerful later on and they are all united against Scion. Except they are all also at their weakest.
Eidolon hasn't learned to recharge his power, Glaistig Uaine just lost multiple ghosts fighting Scion while still considering siding with him, and Taylor has what bugs are around the oil rig and also had to be turned into a giant bug after getting cut in half.
But here they are regardless of those weaknesses. While Scion could never really be stopped by an individual's strength, seeing the three of them still standing against him really made me hope that they could figure out a way to beat him.
