Turbo Kid review
This is a film I’ve been meaning to see since it came out but never got the chance. I finally saw it a few months ago and it was pretty good. The film is about this kid living in a post-apocalyptic society trying to survive and he encounters a robot who becomes his gf and they’re chased by an evil villain played by Michael Ironside. This film has tons of 80′s nostalgia. I didn’t find the 80′s nostalgia quite as charming since I feel nowadays we’ve hit peak 80′s nostalgia oversaturation. I probably would have enjoyed that aspect better if I saw it when it was released in 2014. It’s still fun and it’s very gory.
The use of gore is very comical and kind of reminds me of Robocop. While the use of practical blood is nice the VFX version of blood isn’t quite as good. In fact I could have sworn having seen that CGI blood in plenty of fan films over the years. In fact, a lot of the special effects seem fan film tier. I wouldn’t mind that but this got released at film festivals while fan films normally don’t. Maybe they use the same software or something but while noticeable it doesn’t ruin the film.
Everyone is riding bikes and it’s never explained. I liked that bit, it’s funny but also feels natural. In fact, when you think about it, it makes sense given every other type of vehicle is dead.
Two performances stood out in this. The robot girl and Michael Ironside. The robot girl is charming and quirky, but it never feels forced or obnoxious. There’s a genuine charm to her. Michael Ironside is surprisingly funny in this. Which is surprising since usually from what I’ve seen of him he always seems so serious in his acting roles.
In spite of it’s age and 80′s nostalgia its good for what it is and is genuinely fun. Even with the post-apocalyptic setting, 80′s nostalgia and synth music it does have heart which is nice to see.

Don't give up, Turbo Kid!
You'll be a Turbo Man some day. (Fanart for Turbo Kid, drawn from memory wihtout reference, so the outfit is a bit off, probably. Fanart counts for both the movie and the game i suppose. But especially the game. Which you should check out & play, if you're reading this. It's a fantastic Metroidvania, with a cool bike traversal gimmick. And Turbo Kid here is a cutie, i mean look at him. He's trying so hard to be the the hero we don't deserve. Cheer him on.)
