Tumblr is testing out a communities feature, but I still think they're missing out on not having much of a social networking system.
Like, adding friends, being recommended friends (based on common interests and whatnot), etc.

Skepticism about the new Tumblr "Communities" feature beta
I'm not sure if Tumblr "Communities" is a good idea, especially the whole "it has 1 admin" thing
So imagine for example;
Fandom Y has a lot of drama in it, and then, because one rando got in the beta for Communities, they will become an admin of the "Y Fandom Community", now they have a lot of power and responsibility as the sole admin, and you bet this is gonna cause more drama
Now imagine this for LGBT+ infighting and TERF's?
I think it's gonna turn chaotic real quick with admin abuse all over the place
Tumblr doesn't need to be Reddit, we have #tags for things like these
Let's see where it goes, maybe i'll be wrong, but i'm feeling skeptical about this, i think the Tumblr moderation team should have more oversight on Community groups (for better or for worse, someone needs to be held accountable when shit hits the fan)

Just checked my email, and it looks like I'm in the communities beta. I'll check on it tonight and see what's up with it. If it has me create a community, does anyone want me to make a Dragon Age one? I can't think what else to do that the majority of my mutuals might be into.
...ooh, I have a thought. Not going to say it until I'm in and playing around with things, but I'm hopeful it could be a thing

okay so this tumblr communities beta is essentially if someone took tumblr and made it discord. so a bunch of users can post to it, reactions, etc. it seems interesting and not actively making the site worse so I'm not mad about it.

Hi tumblr,
I don’t hate the idea of tumblr communities, even though it did make tumblr crash three times before starting, every time I opened tumblr the first day it was introduced. The problem is, after the tumblr live collecting data thing and then the ai scraping thing, I’m hesitant to try it until I hear from someone that it’s not a data grab.
Also tumblr has integrated really well with discord for communities so I’m not really sure why you are redoing what’s already been done elsewhere? Especially because it would be really cool if content was searchable—like it’s almost impossible to find back a post i remember reblogging yesterday—which is why my tag is “tryana find it back.”
And also you could work on more diversity in user base, like it would be cool if tumblr was friendly to trans women and people of colour as well as white afab people. Just saying.
