Transgender Day of Remembrance is an international day of solidarity for our community where we light candles and recite the names of everyone we know of whose lives were violently lost as a direct result of transphobia. It’s a day of grief, and a day when we honor the lives of all known and unknown victims. Every year, our nation fails to value and defend the lives of dozens of transgender people. There can be no death and injustice without pain and suffering among those grieving a beloved human being. We are our parents’ babies, and all violence is preventable. In the names of those who are no longer among us, and the many whose names went unreported, let’s love ourselves a little deeper, let’s cherish each other a little harder, and let’s work together to do whatever we can to make this world a safer place for all. 💕

It’s the Trans Day of Remembrance and I’m lying here in bed, thinking about all the incredible trans folks I have known who are gone now. Gone to violence. Gone to disease. Or gone just to hard lives. Of the four trans women in this photo, one was murdered, another had a sudden heart attack, and a third is in a care facility, in pretty bad shape. It is by not much more than very good luck that I remain. And so, I remember. It’s #TransDayofRemembrance, a day where we mourn and honor the people who have been murdered just for being trans. Today is also a day where we recognize that, despite threats of violence and discrimination, the trans community still continues to thrive. Trans individuals everywhere are living their fullest, authentically.
