hey do you guys know about
the history of the bus?
they started as an "omnibus" a horse drawn two stop back and forth along a pre determined route! then they added more stops! they messed with the size of the omnibus and the number of horses until they hit the right size for the route!
Tumblr media
(blease note these are intra-city buses, stagecoaches would go outside the city to specific locations and they generally required a reserved seat)
they basically SLAPPED A ROOF AREA to get roof passengers! double deck omnibuses!
Tumblr media
then we get MOTOR OMNIBUSES! as the petrol engine is getting better! for context the first motor omnibus ran in 1899 - this is 13 years after the patent for the first petrol engine car (1886), 74 years after the first steam public railway in england (1825) and 36 years after the london underground was opened (1863). by 1911 there were no horse-drawn omnibuses owned by the london general omnibus company!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THEY WERE EVERYWHERE! (please look at the number of BUSES and INDIVIDUAL CARRIAGES [usually hired cabs] and PEDESTRIANS)
Tumblr media
a lot of places switched to electric trams in the 1910s, public transport became reliant on the comparatively more efficient light rail or tram systems. the trams gave way to electric buses in london in 1930! they were much less dangerous than trams as people did not have to walk right into traffic to get on em
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then as engines got more efficient trolleybuses were switched with petrol engine buses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then in the 1950s more people got cars and they began dominating the streets and creating.. traffic and. traffic laws. and stuff.
thanks for coming to my whistlestop bus lesson hope u have a brilliant day

I just found a section on my new job's scheduling app (who knew such a thing existed!) where I can set my preferred availability!? They didn't tell me about that! So I set it up so I'm unavailable/prefer not to work every other weekend. Along with the Tuesdays and Thursdays I cannot work. This way I can pick up a shift those weekends if I want to but I could avoid working every single weekend AND it leaves my WWII reenactment weekends available and I'd only need to put in time off requests for the fridays before. I HOPE THIS WORKS AND THAT I DID IT RIGHT AND IT WON'T UPSET MY NEW BOSSES! I'm still gonna work weekends just hopefully every other one and not every single one.

The Springfield pictures on my phone are coming in handy as I go through the Lincoln book.
Wax figures of Lincoln's Cabinet from the Lincoln Museum

Historic Springfield Capitol building
#history is awesome#presidential talk#part of the reason i'm pausing the podcast to dig further into lincoln#is because i intended to look deeper into lincoln after this trip and never did#it's fun going back through the pictures with more context#though it would have been even more fun to have that context when i was there#the main reason i included that banner picture is because i got a nice surprise#when i saw hannibal hamlin's name and realized 'oh now i know that guy!'#it's fun to learn about history of a place you've actually been to#nice to be able picture lincoln's house and the state legislature whenever they mention them#though it is a struggle to roll back my imagination and remember the city doesn't look like the one i saw#pretty sure there was no museum across the street from lincoln's house#lincoln didn't have car traffic outside his office#lincoln probably did not go to the krispy kreme#which makes me very sad because that was one of the most profound culinary experiences of my life#(new item for the time travel bucket list: take lincoln to the krispy kreme)#there are other cool and useful pictures i wanted to show but unfortunately i had to avoid the ones with people in them#there's a great shot of the front of lincoln's office but my sister is standing right in front of it#and most of the useful lincoln's house photos have other tourists there#suddenly i'm worried that i wasn't supposed to take pictures inside the lincoln museum#if any angry museum workers see this i'm sorry#i only had an hour which meant we were sprinting through that place and i needed to be able to look closer later

i love the midwest and its charm of having no notable landmarks for several million miles. so we just start engineering our own and advertise them on gigantic billboards on the interstate

Top Gun Day
Host a watch party, with costumes and topical games, or simply gather your friends to watch the 1986 Tom Cruse classic Top Gun and its sequels.
In 1986, smack dab in the middle of the bodacious decade of neon, headbangers and The Brat Pack, the movie Top Gun roared into theaters like an F-14 Tomcat. It got a missile lock on the box office and shot down just over $356 million, making it what would eventually be the 11th highest grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s career. The movie centers on Maverick, a hot shot pilot, who is sent to the US Navy Fighter Weapons school, and all of the drama, pride and testosterone that scenario entails.
History of Top Gun Day
The actual Navy Fighter Weapons School was formed in 1969, during the time of the Viet Nam War, by the Chief of Naval Operations Admiral, Thomas Hinman Moorer, at the recommendation of Captain Frank Ault. The realization came that the Navy’s fighter pilots needed more training.
During Operation Rolling Thunder, the United States lost nearly 1,000 aircraft over North Vietnamese skies. The USAF and Navy both sought the causes, but came to two different conclusions. The Air Force believed that the fault was mechanical: that MiG pilots caught American pilots in a rear blind spot. The Navy decided that the failure was in training. The Air Force responded by developing new technology, while the Navy started the Top Gun school, eventually paving the way for 110 minutes of heart pounding action, backed by a roaring theme song.
Top Gun Day Timeline
1969 Top Gun school admits its first class
The Navy Fighter Weapons School is opened for extra combat training at the height of the Viet Nam war.
1981 Tom Cruise debuts on the big screen
Playing a minor role in the film, Endless Love, Tom Cruise was beat out for the starring role (opposite Brooke Shields) by Martin Hewitt, an actor who would end up doing mostly random TV appearances afterward.
1986 Top Gun is released
Quickly earning a deep love from audiences, Top Gun becomes the highest grossing film of the year.
1987 US Navy uses the film for recruiting
In a “Join the Navy” commercial, songs from the movie are used along with shots that look like that came straight from Top Gun footage.
2022 Top Gun 2
After waiting more than 30 years, the world finally gets to see Tom Cruise in action again as “Maverick”.
How to Celebrate Top Gun Day
Top Gun Day celebrates the movie, but at its core is all about attitude. It teaches about the importance of teamwork…and shirtless volleyball. So how do you take the highway to the danger zone?
Get started with some of these ideas:
Reenact the best Top Gun Movie Scenes
A good way to begin might be by reliving the adventures of Goose, Maverick and the Iceman. Go to a karaoke bar and sing “She’s Lost that Loving Feeling” and “Take My Breath Away.” Why not try to play a little volleyball with a group? Shirtlessness is optional, of course. Download some Kenny Loggins and blast “Danger Zone” out of those car windows as loud as is possible.
But maybe karaoke isn’t the thing and the weather isn’t good enough for sports. It is still possible to find other ways to enjoy the day!
Host a Top Gun Day Party
Get friends and family together for a cool party in honor of Top Gun Day. Invite people to dress up like their favorite characters. Entertain by playing Top Gun trivia games before settling in to watch the movie.
During the movie, don’t forget to grab a pair of dark aviator glasses and an old leather jacket. For an added challenge, try to find a pair of overalls to convert into a flight suit! It might even be fun to make it into a double feature with some other jet-fighter movies of the era, like the lesser known Iron Eagle, which actually came out a few months before Top Gun.
Snacks served at the party could include a variety of airplane and naval themed treats, such as patriotic m&ms in red, white and blue, cookies in the shapes of stars, airplanes or clouds, and even aviator glasses. Decorations can, of course, feature anything red, white and blue, stars & stripes, naval, airplanes, American flags or even quotes from the Top Gun movie.
Listen to the Top Gun Soundtrack
Of course, the music played at the Top Gun Day party is key. After all, the movie won more awards for its soundtrack and score than in any other category! It’s packed with quintessential 80s classic songs, like these:
Playing with the Boys by Kenny Loggins. Featuring in Tom Cruise’s shirtless beach volleyball scene, this song plays when Maverick (wearing full-length jeans) and Goose beat their adversaries. Of course, then Maverick bails because he has a date with his love interest, Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis.
Take My Breath Away by Berlin. It must be good because this song plays in Top Gun no less than four times! Incidentally, the band named themselves Berlin in an attempt to make people think they were German, but they were really an American new wave band.
Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins. Appearing in the movie three times, this is the ultimate fighter jet song.
You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ by The Righteous Brothers. This one is a classic from 1964 that made a comeback more than 20 years later because of the Top Gun Movie. It plays in the movie when Maverick and the other naval officers lip sync it to Charlie in the bar while it plays on the jukebox.
Show Off with Top Gun Quotes
The Top Gun movie offers a ton of quotable lines that can be used to make an impression. For instance, you can ask your friends for permission to buzz the tower. If they say no, do it anyway. If they ask YOU to buzz the tower, be sure to say “Negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.” Just be prepared for them to buzz you anyway.
Or, even easier, simply tell everyone you see that you have the need, the need for speed. “You can be my wingman forever”, “Let’s turn and burn!” and “Remember boys, no points for second place” are also some other great lines from the film.
Learn Some Fun Facts About Top Gun
Even those who consider themselves to be pretty big fans of the movie might have something new to learn when it comes to Top Gun Day trivia! Here are some fun facts to impress friends and coworkers alike on the day:
Top Gun is set in San Diego, California and many of the sites for filming can still be visited, including Charlie’s little blue house and Kansas City Barbeque, which still features Goose’s piano.
Tom Cruise, at only 5’7”, wore lifts in his shoes to balance out the taller 5’10” Kelly McGillis as his love interest in the movie.
The movie didn’t originally have a love scene. That scene between Maverick and Charlie was added later, after test audiences said it needed one.
Bryan Adams was invited to sing on the Academy Award winning soundtrack, but he backed out because he thought the movie promoted war.
Play Top Gun Video Games
There are also two Top Gun video games currently available. The first is simply called Top Gun and was released for iOS devices by Freeverse Software. The second is called Top Gun: Hardlock. It comes from 505 Games, and is playable on PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
Talk to a Member of the Armed Forces
There are many ways one could enjoy and relieve the excitement of the movie, but perhaps one of the more meaningful things you could do is to find a member of the armed forces, particularly an aviator, and thank them for keeping the skies safe. Ultimately, without someone up there, we might not have the movie, or the day, down here.
However you choose to celebrate, be sure to raise a glass for Goose, Maverick, Iceman and the rest of Top Gun class of 1986. Let the world know that you haven’t lost that loving feeling, even after all this time.

My experience with Stockholm’s buses today has been HELL. All the services that ran through the harbour were late and over-crowded (on both directions).
Thankfully I left early, so despite that I had to wait for my bus for nearly an hour, I still made it to the harbour on time. If I had relied on the last few buses on the schedule, I absolutely would not have made it. I mean, the bus I first intended to go to was delayed for 20-30 minutes. It was at its capacity so I had to wait for another 20 minutes for the next bus. Miraculously, I fit in and even got a seat on that bus. But then that bus didn’t go to its destination, so I had to go on another bus, which thankfully was emptier and brought me to the harbour.
Yup. Next time I’ll take the underground.
Other than that, the day has been lovely. I got to visit the Vasa museum (and now I’m all hyped about all the other potential places I want to visit, like the viking museum and the Skansen open air museum, so my next few trips to Stockholm will probably focus on visiting these places), and I also had plenty of time to visit a supermarket and buy some Swedish goodies (or, mostly godis”, aka candy, lol). So I was mostly hanging around the Östermalm-Djurgården area. I did not go to the centre or the old town like I normally do.
Anyway, I have been sweating and walking a lot so I might even get hungry later wow.

in the time loop the only way out is to leave her there but you don't ever leave her there, never in the roughly one thousand years you have been in the same day. it is probably like "50 first dates" but you haven't stooped so low as to watch "50 first dates" yet. (but who is to say what another thousand years of the same media will bring to you, maybe you will develop a new taste).
you spent about 200 of these years sulking in a bathtub or on the couch or staring at the seaside. 300 of them have been spent slowly mapping the geographical distance you can actually get before the time loop restarts. you have a list of favorite places: one library in Western Massachusetts called "The Bookmill", which has weird hours and has never raised an eyebrow to you arriving out-of-breath and panting, asking to see a specific book on a specific shelf. There is one beach without a name in North Carolina; it is an accident of geography and ownership title disputes - and it is pristine, untouched, warm and cozy. you've taken her on a lot of picnics there. Acadia National Park. One specific birdhouse in the mountains.
you were stuck in the time loop with the money you entered it with: not enough to rent a private jet. you've robbed a bank a few times, you don't like the way it ends. maybe next century you'll get the hang of it. you don't like the look on her face when you say hang on i have to stop at the bank.
you just have to leave her, and you can go back to being a person again. you took 5 years just catching a flight and sitting in the Grand Canyon. if there's one thing you regret more than anything, it's that you hadn't gotten your passport renewed before this fucking time loop. maybe you should spend some time learning forgery - but also, like, you look like an english teacher. nobody is going to be cool about you asking to see their paper printing machines.
the world is very big. that is one of the things groundhog day gets wrong. there are no consequences, so you have literally all the time (or none of the time?) in the world. in groundhog day, he does a lot of very cool things, but in reality - your muscle memory never gets better. you can't necessarily learn how to play piano or sculpt ice, because your hands never remember the practice. but hey - maybe you'll try violin next. drums. synth.
you can open any door and walk into any conversation. money isn't really an object. you can try every meal off every menu, forever. take her on helicopter tours and into every museum and on every event that is happening right-now at-this-moment. parades and funerals and calligraphy classes.
but you are somewhat trapped by the limitations of your body. if you were reading a book, you still need to get up and go back to the library and find that book again when the day resets. (thank god for the internet). it still takes like 2 hours to board a plane, and then takeoff and landing and traffic. you've gotten off to run around on the freeway. one of the little thankful things: since your brain isn't actually developing (it's a muscle too), the days thankfully don't feel shorter to you. that would be agony.
all you have to do to leave the timeloop is let that man get away with it. that's all. in every version of yourself - forever - you have stopped him.
the problem is that this experience has convinced you of the existence of the human soul. after all, how else are you forming memories? your very cells reset. information has to be transferred somehow. and if timeloops are real, you can convince yourself other magic exists. so you have two choices here: this hell, or the next. there might be a millennia where you have been worn down to the point you can accept fate's decision. this is just not one of them. ironically - she is the one thing you have left.
and besides! if you can't always find something new in your partner, aren't you failing them? there is something new about her, every day with the same morning. every brutal day with the same orange sunset.
after all, you wanted to live with her in heaven, in eternity, and, well - isn't this second-best.
