The Outsider (2002)
"The fever has settled in his chest. Whoever it was said, "only the good die young" never lived in Montana. Laudanum. It will ease his passing. God knows, where he's going, there will be suffering enough."
Montana sheep farmer Rebecca Yoder (Naomi Watts) offers sanctuary to an on-the-lam outlaw, Johnny Gault (Tim Daly), who is suffering from a gunshot wound. Yoder is a recent widow, and her decision to help the outsider doesn't sit well with her Quaker community. As a romance brews between her and Gault, it puts in jeopardy her standing among her devout neighbors. But when an evil rancher makes a play for the community's land, Gault's sharpshooting skills might prove his worth after all.

A Ghost From the Past (Part Two)
Whumptober 2022: 9. Tossing and Turning Fandom: Top Gun, Top Gun: Maverick, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, f!reader Word Count: 1701 TW: Angst, Nightmares, Disappearance, Missing Person
Part One, Part Two
Tumblr media
No one ever discovered how you came back or why. The military buried the story, claiming that your death had been faked as part of a top-secret operation, and you were allowed to return to your normal life. And that meant your life with Rooster.
There were some small bumps in the road as the two of you got used to the situation. For Rooster, you had been dead for two years. He had mourned you, attended your funeral, and tried to learn to live without you. He had been fundamentally changed by the whole situation and it wasn’t easy to overcome those changes.
For you, you had skipped over the past two years and everything that occurred within them. So much had happened during that time, both on a personal and global scale, that you struggled to catch up. The biggest adjustment was accepting this new version of Rooster. To you, Rooster was still the playful, loving man who had asked you to marry him the morning of the incident. Now, sometimes you struggled to interact with this new, moodier, more jaded version of the man you loved.
But in the end, the two of you work it out. Rooster slowly let his guard down again, and you began to see more of the Rooster that you knew. And eventually, you became more familiar with the current timeline and no longer felt so out of place. Within a year, the two of you were married and started the life you had always dreamt about. Together.
However, there was still one issue that continued to plague the relationship. Rooster accepted you were his Echo the day you were shot down on the Uranium mission and he never doubted that again. You were here and he had you back, and however that happened, he wasn’t going to question it. But, because no one knew how you got here, no one had any idea what that might mean for your future.Rooster was terrified that one day you would disappear just as suddenly as you had appeared. And there was nothing he could do to stop it. And as much as he tried not to dwell on it, the thought was never far from his mind.
For the first year after the two of you reconciled and you moved back in with him, Rooster would spend half the night tossing and turning in bed, his breathing rapid, and a layer of sweat coating his body. Then he would jerk upright, suddenly wide awake and screaming for you. And every time, you would wrap him in your arms as you murmured words of reassurance that you were still here. He would cling to you tightly as you trailed kisses across his neck and bare chest until he finally drifted back to his restless sleep.
After a while, these episodes slowly began being less frequent. Instead of every night, they became a few times a week, and then, once or twice a month. Eventually, it got to the point where it seemed that the dreams had stopped for good. That is, until one night, just a few days before the two-year anniversary of your reappearance…..
Tumblr media
Rooster bolts upright as your name tears from his lips. It has been over six months since his last dream, and he has almost forgotten how intense and terrifying they are. He buries his head in his hands as he tries to erase the panic and terror he felt thinking you were gone but it does little to slow the rapid beating of his heart. He waits for the familiar comfort of your arms slipping around his waist…. but it does come.
Lifting his head, he glances over to your side of the bed only to find it empty. The blankets are tangled from his agitated thrashing about yet your side of the bed seems untouched. Glancing over, Rooster sees your phone sitting on its usual spot on the bedside table, untouched since you went to bed.
All day, you had been complaining about not feeling right. You were very light-headed and having trouble concentrating. He found you just staring off into space on more than one occasion. You had gone to bed early in the hopes that a good night’s sleep might help, but what if it was more than that?
“Echo?” he calls out hesitantly, but there is no response. “Echo!”
The bathroom door across from the bed is closed and Rooster quickly climbs out of bed, knocking gently on the door. “Sweetheart? Are you in there?” When he doesn’t hear an answer, he cracks open the door but the room is empty.
He hurries through the house in nothing but his boxer briefs, desperately calling for you or looking for any sign of where you had gone. But there is nothing out of place: your purse is still on the back of the chair where you left it when you came home, your shoes are still tossed haphazardly in front of the couch, your keys are still hanging on the hook by the door. Everything you would have taken with you if you had left is still here….. But you aren’t.
Rooster collapses to his knees in the middle of the living room, a howl wrenching from his chest. Bending over, he presses his forehead firmly against the hardwood floor as his body continues to be racked with sobs. All of his worst fears have been realized and he is living in his literal nightmare. He has lost you once again. And this time, he didn’t even get to say goodbye.
Suddenly, a pair of arms wrap around him as a voice coos, “Oh, Roo, I’m so, so, sorry. It’s okay. I’m here. I’m here.”
Rooster raises his head, eyes wide and frantic. But there you are, kneeling in front of him just as beautiful and real as always. Rooster grabs you and pulls you into a bone crushing embrace, afraid if he lets you go, you’ll disappear again. You return his hug with just as much ferocity, whispering over and over again, “I’m here, I’m here.”
Finally, once his heartbeat returns to a relatively normal rate, he pulls back so he can cup your face in his hands. “Where were you?”
“I’m so sorry, baby. You hadn’t had a nightmare in months and it didn’t even occur to me….” you lean into his hand. “I still wasn’t feeling good and I couldn’t sleep so I went and sat on the swing for a little bit to see if the fresh air would help. I must have dozed off because the next thing I knew, I was waking up to you screaming.”
Rooster finally notices the blanket laying in a heap on the floor by the backdoor where you must have dropped it when you came in. He had looked out the front door and in your car while he searched for you, but in his panic, it never occurred to him to check in the back. He feels so stupid for overreacting like that.
“I’m sorry. When I woke up and I couldn’t find you, I just thought….”
You nod. “I know. I would have thought that too. Especially right now so close to the anniversary.”
Lowering his head, Rooster asks, “Why do you put up with me? With this? For over a year, I woke you up every single night and you never once complained. Why?”
You hesitate for just a moment before whispering, “Because I’m scared it’ll happen too.”
Rooster’s head shoots up as he releases your face in surprise. “What? You never said anything.”
“I was trying to stay strong and I didn’t want you to know I thought me disappearing again was a possibility. I was secretly grateful for every night you woke us up, because it also reminded me that I was still here. But I’m fucking terrified that one day I might just open my eyes and I’ll be back where I came from, about to get into that plane.” Tears begin to well up in your eyes but you quickly wipe them away. “Yet, as much as the thought of losing this life we have built together breaks my heart, I know it would be even harder on you. You already had to lose me once, and it scares me to think of what will happen to you if you lose me again.
“So, you have to promise me you’ll be okay if that day ever does come, alright? Because the thought of anything happening to you – whether I’m here or not — it’s too much to even think about. Please…. I need to know that you’ll be okay.”
“Echo–” Rooster starts to look away, but you stop him.
“No, you look at me Bradley Bradshaw.” You only used his real name when you were deadly serious, so he raises his head to stare into your eyes. “Every single day we’ve gotten together since I appeared has been a gift that we were never supposed to have. And if I were to disappear tonight, that’s still two years of memories that shouldn’t exist. Two years of a miracle. So, please, I need you to promise me you won’t give up or let it destroy you. Just be happy for the extra time we had together. Can you do that for me?”
Rooster squeezes his eyes shut tightly but nods. Pulling him in closer, you begin kissing away the remaining tears that have trailed down his face. When you finish, you place a long, lingering kiss on his mouth. He can taste the salt from his tears on your lips and it makes him smile against your mouth. You always have a way of turning his sadness or pain into something wonderful.
Without breaking the kiss, Rooster scoops you into his arms and stands up. Carrying you to the bedroom, he knows you are right. He needs to stop fearing what might happen in the future and enjoy your time together now, how ever long that might be. And he plans on starting now by spending the rest of the night showing you how grateful he is for you. His miracle.

Whumptober day 9– tossing and turning
I’ve been looking for an excuse to write something sickfic-y, and I finally got my chance :3 bit shorter than they have been, but weekends you know.
Thanks @skyloftian-nutcase for the advice with Sky’s symptoms :]
Ao3 link
————————————————————
“Has he slept at all?”
As Twilight quietly walked up and asked the question, Warriors shook his head with a sigh.
“Only for very short intervals. He just can’t seem to settle, and whenever he does finally drift off he wakes up again,” the captain murmured, and Twilight swallowed as he looked down at Sky.
The skyloftian lay under a heap of blankets, sweat beading his brow. Dark almost bruise-like shadows hung under his eyes, and he was shivering despite the blankets. He kept shifting slightly and letting out quiet moans as well, even when Warriors brushed a cloth over his forehead and gently quieted him.
A scratch that Sky had thought wasn’t big enough to bother anyone about had gotten infected, which even he hadn’t realized until he’d suddenly collapsed in the middle of the path that morning. It was now the middle of the night, and his condition had only gotten worse.
Sky let out a louder moan, and Twilight kneeled next to him, taking the cloth out of Warriors’ grasp.
“I’ll sit with him for a while captain, go get some sleep,” he said, patting him on the shoulder.
Warriors frowned. “Rancher he’s only gotten worse, and out of all of us I’m the most familiar with infection like this. You can’t expect me to just leave him.”
Twilight sighed and leveled the captain with a look. “You’re not leaving him. You’re getting some rest so you can actually function in order to better help him.”
“I’m functioning just fine,” Warriors defended, obviously pretending like the shadows under his eyes that rivaled Sky’s weren’t there.
“At the moment. Until you make a mistake because you’re so exhausted,” Twilight pointed out. “We can’t afford mistakes here captain. Sky can’t afford you to make mistakes.”
Warriors still looked reluctant, and Twilight decided to play dirty.
“I know you barely slept last night,” he mentioned, and Warriors’ ear twitched. “I... noticed you were up with Wolfie. It’s none of my business why, but Sky wouldn’t want you wearing yourself out like this when someone else could be watching him. Go sleep.”
Warriors let out an exhausted sigh, nodding as he relinquished his hold on the cloth and finally stood up.
“...fine. I’ll take a short nap. But wake me if there’s any change,” he said worriedly, and Twilight nodded as he pushed the captain in the direction of his bedroll. He stumbled tiredly away, and the rancher sighed.
Finally. He’d been trying to convince Warriors to sleep for the past three hours.
“I thought he’d never leave.”
Twilight made a stern expression as Wild appeared and sat down next to him, seemingly out of nowhere.
“You know, you should be sleeping too,” he chastised, and Wild swallowed.
“I can’t, I tried,” he said in a quiet voice, hunching over a bit. “Sky’s making too much noise.”
As if on cue, Sky whimpered, and the two heroes looked over at him worriedly.
His eyes were half-lidded, the normally bright blue of his irises sickly and clouded. Sweat continued to bead on his forehead, and his shoulder kept twitching where his injury was, small tremors running through his body.
Wild bit his lip, and ran a hand through Sky’s hair, the delirious hero leaning into the touch.
“Will he be okay?” Wild asked quietly, and Twilight sighed.
“We’re doing all we can for him champion. At this point it’s not really up to us,” he replied, watching as Sky continued to move restlessly. “We’ll just have to wait.”
Wild nodded, and they settled in to care for their brother.
The hours slowly ticked by, Sky’s condition not really seeming to change. Warriors had been giving him a potion every few hours, which they continued to do, but Sky just kept shifting and sweating, and letting out weak moans.
Nothing much happened until the very first hints of dawn shone in the sky.
“...wh...ere...” Sky whispered suddenly, brows pinched. Wild and Twilight immediately leaned forwards, and watched as his eyes flickered open a bit more, and darted between them. “De...Dem... n-not... fin-ished...”
Wild gave Twilight a nervous look, and the rancher gave him a helpless one back.
“I-I ha-ave... have to s-top, him, Zelda is... isn’t, she isn’t,” Sky breathed, and Twilight mopped his brow with the cloth.
“Sky, it’s okay,” Wild soothed, “your Zelda’s fine, she’s back in your time. It’s okay.”
“No,” Sky gasped, eyelids fluttering, “no it’s, it’s not— a-all my... t-the, the cu...curse...”
Sky sucked in a gasp, and raised a hand to claw at the bandages wrapping his shoulder. Wild gently pulled his hand off and held it in his own so he couldn’t try again.
“L-le...leggo,” Sky slurred, and Wild held his hand even tighter. “G-Ghi... let go, let... n-no.”
“Sky you can’t take the bandages off, you need them,” Twilight explained, but Sky didn’t stop struggling, his breathing starting to speed up.
“Let go,” he gasped, flinching away when Twilight grabbed his other hand, “no, d-don’t... don’t— Gh-Ghira—!”
Wild gave Twilight an alarmed look as Sky began to struggle more forcefully, and Twilight bit his lip, making a decision. He released Sky’s arm, motioning Wild back, and as the two of them let go, Sky went limp, breathing heavily.
“Sky?” Wild asked quietly, and the skyloftian whimpered again.
Twilight leaned back down and wiped the sweat pouring off Sky’s forehead again, the teenager twitching at the touch. Shivers began to wrack through him more forcefully, and Twilight gently ran a hand through his hair.
“Sky, please, try to sleep,” he begged, but the skyloftian only let out another moan.
“There must be something more we can do for him,” Wild growled quietly, reaching forward to nervously fiddle with one of the blanket’s corners. “He needs to sleep Twilight, he’s exhausted.”
“I know,” Twilight said in a tired voice. “Light spirits I know. I just don’t know what we can do.”
Wild looked down at Sky, and the blanket in his hand, then paused, looking over all the other blankets that had been piled up on him.
“...where’s his sailcloth?” he asked suddenly, and Twilight raised an eyebrow.
“It’s not there?”
“No, it’s not,” Wild said, checking again. “I thought it was just underneath all the other blankets, but it’s not here at all.”
Sky moaned, shifting restlessly, and Twilight wiped his forehead yet again. He looked thoughtfully down at Sky, and then over at Wild. Could his beloved sailcloth not being with him really be the reason Sky couldn’t just fall asleep?
Well even if it wasn’t, Twilight wasn’t about to deny him the comfort it would undoubtedly bring.
“Could you check his bag?” he asked, and Wild nodded, already having begun to rifle through the contents. He muttered absentmindedly to himself as he took out a few items and set them out of the way, and right as Twilight was about to feel bad about letting him dig through all of Sky’s things, the champion let out a triumphant sound.
He pulled Sky’s sailcloth up out of his pouch, and Twilight grabbed a corner of it, the two tucking it warmly around the knight.
“There you go Sky, try and rest, please,” Twilight said, and Sky breathed in a shuddering breath.
He was still shaking, but as his fingers skirted the embroidery on his sailcloth, his stuttering breaths and restless motions began to slow. His breathing started to deepen, and he suddenly relaxed, a small sigh escaping his lips.
Twilight leaned forward to check nothing was wrong, and gave a small relieved smile.
Sky was finally asleep.
“Finally,” Wild said in a relieved voice, and Twilight nodded as he fixed Sky’s blankets a bit further.
“Hang in there Sky, we’ll get through this yet,” Twilight said quietly, smoothing his hair from his forehead.
Sky slept on.

WT- Day.10
SOOO- this piece is acc from day 9 (yesterday) because I ended up running out of time and not being able to post it so now you get it hehehe.
-Tossing and Turning-
---
Medic gently brushed their hand over Sidekick's arm, "Hey, you still with me, bud?"
Sidekick blinked before their eyes met Medic's and they nodded with a small nod, "Y-yeah... Sorry..." They chuckled, causing their headache to grow worse, they hissed, wincing as they brought a hand to their head.
Medic studied them for a moment before standing up, "I'll get you some painkillers, can I trust you not to fall asleep while I'm gone?” Sidekick smiled before nodding, feeling how heavy their eyelids felt. Medic tapped the doorframe, smiling before leaving Sidekick alone. That's when Sidekick slowly took in their surroundings, they were lying on a soft bed, the duvet a soft texture. Their head lay on a soft pillow which they nuzzled into with a yawn, they felt exhausted.  Their eyes slowly slipped closed but with a jolt, they forced their eyes open, making sure they stuck to their word.
As Medic made their way down the hall, they heard another set of footsteps. They followed the sound, knowing full well what they would see. Villain paced around the parlour, clenching and unclenching their bloodied fist.
Medic cleared their throat at the doorway, causing Villain to turn around with a jump. Medic smiled aplogetically, looking Villain up and down, “Hey.” Villain looked down at the ground, “Hey…” There was an awkward pause before Villain decided to break it, “Is…Are-are they…”
“They’re okay. Bad concussion but thankfully their wounds aren't crucial.” Villain nodded, blinking hard as they clenched their jaw hard. It was rare for Villain to lose their temper like that. Medic had witnessed it an odd few times but not many. They knew their whole ‘big, bad, scary, Villain’ was a mask…but they did however notice that Villain seemed to be slightly softer with Sidekick.
“You got lucky, Villain, a few more blows and it wouldve been serious.” Medic watched as Villain’s knuckles went white from being clenches into such tight fists, they took that as their sign to stop talking.
“I was- I was just getting some painkillers.” Villain stood up, pouring themself a drink, simply nodding while they scooped three icecubes into their glass. Medic bit their tongue, lingering for a moment before turning away and rushing to the bathroom. They looked through the cabinets, finding the pills and choosing the right container and taking out a few pills, spilling them into their palms.
A few minutes later as Medic made their way down the hall, they heard whimpers and thrashing anlong with cries. Their eyebrows furrowed as their freehand reached to their backpocket and produced their knife. They counted down from three before bursting through the door.
No one.
Their eyes then slowly moved to Sidekick who was thrashing, tossing and turning on the bed, their legs tangling in the duvet as whimpers and cries escaped their lips. Medic’s eyes widened before they cursed under their breath. They rushed to place down the meds and the glass of water on the bedside locker before rushing over to Sidekick, gently shaking them on the shoulder, “Hey, Sidekick, I need you to wake up, come on buddy!”
After a few long moments, Sidekick woke up with a gasp, scrambling to sit up as they clutched Medic’s shirt tightly, sobbing out as they heaved gulps of air, clinging onto Medic’s shirt as tight as possible.
Medic gently hugged them, shushing them gently, “Hey, it's okay buddy, shhh, you're okay.” Their heart sank, full of guilt as all they could do was hold Sidekick tightly, wishing they could get them out of here.
