Elaboration I think is the worst enemy of comics. I think simplicity is the direction. Unfortunately, years ago elaboration became the keyword instead of simplicity. I think Toth was righter than people like Neal Adams and [Todd] McFarlane. I think they put too much technique in their stuff, and the industry deserves simplicity and clean artwork. It reads better, and it’s more alive and spontaneous.
As you know, one of the things hurting the industry now is that there’s too much technique and too much attention to the color and reproduction, and not enough attention to the freedom of the storytelling and the artwork. I bemoan that fact. I think that’s one of the things that’s hurt comics. I know the fans love it. It’s like the tastes of fans, in movies and comics, have caused more mayhem in the production of movies and comics, because fans don’t have good taste. Although I shouldn’t say that. [Spurgeon laughs.] Actually, I don’t mind. Quote me, because I don’t need the fans to buy my artwork anymore anyway. [Laughter.] I bemoan the fact that taste has gone out the window. Young fans love that technique stuff. And to me, that’s the worst thing that has happened to comics.
That’ll get me lynched, huh?
-- John Romita, Sr., talking to Tom Spurgeon for the Comics Journal (X)

Thomas, along with Spawn Universe artists Javi Fernandez, Carlo Barberi, Von Randal, and more surprise guests, will do a Q&A after the presentation with the Spawn fans in attendance. It is sure to be one HELL of a time
Valerio Giangiordano, also attending NYCC, states "I just finished working on my first, great "Spawn Universe" project. All pages inked, all covers completed, all issues delivered. I can't show anything right now…" Looks like there will be lots of Spawn announcements at New York Comic-Con this year.

Todd McFarlane Productions Announces "The New U" Titles
Todd McFarlanes Spawn Universe is laying the foundation of a lineup of new comics called "The New U." This new era will follow the events of Spawn #350. The first three "The New U" comics are Sam & Twitch: Case Files, Rat City, and Monolith. "The New U" comics will span a variety of genres, including crime, horror, science-fiction, drama, and comedy.
Sam & Twitch: Case Files puts the detectives front and center in their own series. The comic hails from McFarlane and Jon Goff and artist Szymon Kudrański.
Sam & Twitch: Case Files #1 goes on sale on March 27, 2024.
Rat City, from Erica Schultz and Zé Carlos, follows Peter Cairn, ex-soldier, amputee, and Hellspawn in a post-war future. "But Peter isn't dead like Al. Peter got his Spawn powers from the nanites in his prosthetic legs—nanites that were affected when Al Simmons initiated his necroplasmic detonation in the present. Al had no clue that the effects would ripple across—not just space—and but time as well." (Image Comics)
Rat City #1 goes on sale on April 10, 2024.
Monolith, from Sean Lewis and Valerio Giangiordano, is a three part miniseries that explores the Hellspawn Monolith's origin and what his connection is with Omega Spawn.
Monolith #1 (of 3) goes on sale on May 15, 2024.
